Yesterday, I worked concessions for a string quartet that performed here in Olympia and that all went quite well. They had about 500 people come to the show. After that, I went to the party at the house of the director to Cannibal: The Musical, that I'm in. It was a lot of people talking, a lot of people drinking and quite a few (but not as many) outside smoking. I had several conversations with people and a sparkling time was had by all. I got there at about 10:00 and left at about 11:00, but the party was in full swing, so it wasn't about to end soon. I don't think that it's going to go on all night long (a Lionel Ritchie reference ;)) because the cannibals and trappers have a photo shoot up on Mt. Rainier and they're meeting at 9:00 a.m., to carpool. It's a long drive from Olympia to Mt. Rainier, especially if you've been drinking the night before, but I'm sure they'll all be fine.

Today, and probably Sunday as well, I have to go back to the house I moved out of (and rented from my sister) and continue to help my sister fix it up to sell. She mentioned something about me changing all of the door knobs, which is something that I need to do in my new place, too. I bought a locking doorknob and a deadbolt for my front door and a locking doorknob for the back of my garage, but I want to take them back to The Home Depot, where I got them. I forgot (at the time that I bought them) that I had a couple of 10%-off coupons and I want to use them! And since I also need to get more door knobs (for the inside doors) anyway, I can get those with the 10%-off coupon, too. :D

It had more songs but not all the songs on the soundtrack, but I like the songs on the cast album like Who Are You Now, The Music That Makes Me Dance, Cornet Man (Especially the trumpet solo), and the songs for Fanny's mother Find Yourself a Man and Who Taught Her Everything She Knows?

Bought a LOT of Beatles albums....but the group whose albums I loved was Eric Burden and the Animals.... MGM albums with great covers and great songs.

Good morning, all! I slept late and loved every minute of it. I need to hit the NYPL Theatre Collection today, but I fear it may be closed for Veteran's Day. I'll take the bus ride down, check out the situation and either go the the library or come home.

I can't linger long here this morning. I've got to climb up on the roof and clean off the leaves that are gathering in flat places. I basically have to do this twice a year, or I get leaks on my back porch.
But it's a beautiful day to work outside, so I don't mind too much.

I probably won't get to the Brando MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY for awhile, but I'm disappointed to read it isn't razor-sharp. I'm sure it will look better than the laserdisc (the picture quality varied in it a great deal, too), but I was hoping for something really special with it.

I have been horribly E&T for several days, but I am just about finished up with a big work project that I had. So now, I get to be kind of back to "normal" ........for me anyway.
After being E&T for several days, I felt like I should atone in hebrew, to be really effective. Unfortunately, when I try to do that, it sounds like I'm saying "Barack Obama" instead of anything that might be real.
Oh well, those are the problems of only being jewish-in-spirit !

Orig. cast -- I think Milk & Honey (if there was one). I just know that I got to go up to L.A. to the old Temple Baptist Church (also called Philharmonic Hall) and see Molly Picon in the tour company of M.& H.
45 -- I wasn't a big 45 fan......I was usually listening to the music tracks from old RKO and Warner musicals on TV.
I hate to admit this, but at my grandmother's house, our record selection was mainly 78s, and it was still an acoustic Victor phonograph to listen to.

I'm up, I'm up, after a decent night's sleep. I probably would have slept later, but the phone rang and I was greeted with the lovely voice of Miss Emily Skinner, and we discussed the cover of the CD for awhile. The gals had something very specific they wanted, and while it's definitely different I'm going with it, partly because I like them, and partly because of the fact that stores are not really an issue and people won't be thumbing through CDs, but just purchasing it at various online places.

I can't recall my first soundtrack ever bought. It might have been Captain From Castile...or merely some Elvis Presley movie. Or it might have been "Hey, Let's Twist!" featuring Joey Dee and the Starliters. I believe that was the title of the movie.

Hey, der B and I are just now taking a break from the Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival. This is the first chance I've had to post!
So far, we've seen a film called Mentor, (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0462421/) starring Rutger Hauer, who isn't getting any prettier. IMDB calls it "Thought provoking." The thought der B and I shared on leaving the theater was that it wasn't very good.
Basically, his thought was that if a film is going to be a character study, it helps if the characters are interesting in some way.

This evening, der B and I will be seeing a film from Macedonia, titled Bal-Can-Can (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0369258/), which is billed as a comedy, and a film from Poland, titled The Master (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0369258/), which is not (but some of the people in the ticket line saw an earlier showing and said the cinematography was fantastic).
Der Brucer is actually going to watch films with English subtitles! Will wonders never cease!

Went shopping and found a little Russian market that I didn't previously know existed. Bought some type of cake.
Then went went to Best Buy and bought a DVD set of 20 1930s/40s exploitation films with titles like SHE SHOULD'A SAID NO, TERROR OF TINY TOWN, SLAVES IN BONDAGE, ESCORT GIRL, and THE MARIJUANA MENACE. I am sure that each of these films will be highly educational. And the set of 20 movies only cost $6.00!
Then stopped at an estate sale where I purchased a vintage 1950s suit and tie that I may wear to the opening night of THE BRAIN FROM PLANET X...in keeping with the vintage theme (if I can find a hat to go with it).
And also found an old Photoplay magazine with some nifty shots of Allison Hayes in it.

Well, I just finished baking oatmeal raisin cookies while listening to GREY GARDENS ocr. I have now prepared a cornish game hen by putting apples and onions in the cavity instead of stuffing and basted it with the butter I briefly cooked the apples and onions in, then popped it in the oven. I have some sweet potatoes, so I think I'll bake one. Not sure what else...maybe corn...after all Jerry likes my corn
The cats took turns sitting on the island watching me while I cooked. Sometimes I think they believe I have to be supervised by a feline and they work in shifts, lol.

Got my "roof cleaning" done with little or no trouble. Glad to have that finished for the fall and winter months.

It's a beautiful sunny day here....very cold, but the sun is beautiful. We lucked out here. We got snow, but only a dusting and it's already melted. Not far north of here they got about 7 inches of the white stuff. I love snow, but still have things to do, so I'm not quite ready for it yet. I'm hoping tomorrow is warmer than predicted so I can do some caulking.

Would you believe that I have this London cast album on CD and have never listened to it. I keep meaning to, but it slips my mind and I end up pulling something else off the shelf.
I really will try to pull it down this week for a quick listen. I do love the score so much.

I watched OVER THE HEDGE as I prepared and ate lunch. Very enjoyable, quite hilarious in some spots, and the voice cast was superb.

I watched several of the special features on the OVER THE HEDGE disc, too including the cast talking about their roles (and getting to see them recording variations of their lines for the director so he could pick the performance he liked best. Very interesting.
There was a "Making of" documentary that I also watched parts of.

When I was waiting for a phone call, I put in the first episode in the season 4 boxed set of CSI: MIAMI. I only got about twenty minutes into the show before my phone call came through, but it was very colorful, almost as colorful as seeing the show in HD.

Do I remember Channel 69? Oh boy, it helped make my first year in Atlanta more bearable. We moved there in 1985. I would get home from school every day and watch the shows on there. You must know the great Janet Darr, and The Butcher! This was the last truly local broadcast TV there was, of the old school variety. I wrote to Janet Darr once and she read my letter on the TV.
And I remember the day the music died, and Channel 69 dumped the music videos altogether. And the poor Butcher, who had been a heavy metal show host, was stuck showing kiddie cartoons as "Captain Butcher."
I credit two things in Atlanta with giving me such eclectic musical tastes, and one was Channel 69. The other was WREK Radio, the freeform station from Georgia Tech.

Seriously, I would love to hear Bruce read a couple of the stories out loud and in person. The only problem is that a couple of them would be either too powerful or too emotional to listen to.

Janet still lives here in Atlanta. I know so many guys who had mad crushes on Janet! There was a get-together of some of the old VMC folks a few years back but I was out of town. I did hear that Janet is a mom and has aged well. The Butcher started a few weeks after I left. Our boss was Mike Greene, who became head of NARAS for many years until he left after allegations of sexual harassment.
It was fun working in live TV. Our technical director is still one of my close friends, and he was always ready to experiment---dragging the cameras outside the studio on days it snowed, or there was an eclipse, or reacting to things going on in Atlanta that day. I met tons of rock stars, including some of my heroes, like Alan Price. Loudon Wainwright and John Cougar (pre-Mellencamp) were very down to earth and thought nothing of riding around in my crappy little VW bug.
Nicest: Huey Lewis, Robert Fripp, Adam Ant, Cheap Trick, Chris De Burgh, Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden)
Bitchiest: Rick James, Roseanne Cash (but Rodney Crowell was a dream)

First rock: well, not really rock, but I bought the first 3 Brasil '66 albums on my 11th birthday with all the money I got. I also got the 45 of Hey Jude/Revolution sometime in there, which probably counts more as rock. :)
First soundtrack: I think the first one I bought myself was probably West Side Story, but it might have been Sweet Charity.
First cast album: I really can't recall. Maybe My Fair Lady.
The Tigard Pops had their Carole King concert today. We had a large, appreciative audience. Now I am off to play bossa nova with a quartet I've recently joined. We have a regular gig at a really nice wine bar/restaurant. I am not a wine devotee but the owner gave me a free glass of Pinot the last time we were there that was to die for, so I think I will repeat that tonight. :)

I still can't think of the first albums I bought other than the Jackson 5. I had tons of albums and starting buying them when I was in 5th grade. I had a tendency to play them over and over and over....so my brother and sister started buying me what they wanted to hear for Christmas and birthdays...pretty ingenious actually

Sherlock is improving, with constant training. He does know what leave and drop mean, words I never expected to use in reference to myself. It works though & that is all I care about. I, of course, keep shoving a toy into his mouth to replace my body parts. I suppose I should feel honored he prefers me to his toys.

Edisaurus, you have brought back such memories of my early Atlanta days. When we moved there, we didn't even have cable, so channel 69 was something cool to tune to on the UHF dial. It was the first TV station I ever went to in person (went there to pick up an LP I won in some call-in contest—by a band called Arms Akimbo).
But it was also a time when there was really a burgeoning Atlanta music scene, even independent of the "other" scene in Athens. DB Records out of Atlanta had a lot of cool area bands, all this made Atlanta more palatable for me after my family moved from Chicagoland.

MBarnum, I really wanted that STAR WARS album, but I don't think I really knew what a soundtrack album actually was. I remember being kind of disappointed that it was just music and not scenes from the movie or sounds of spaceships and whatnot. The Creature Cantina theme offered some cheer.

"Boogie Oogie Oogie" is actually a satirical treatise on conformity. Sure, you may think you're too goo-oo-ood to boogie, but the fact is that everybody here tonight MUST boogie, and if you think you're an exception to the rule, you've got another think comin'. I'm paraphrasing, but it's got an important message.

How I got from "Le Freak" to "Boogie Oogie Oogie" is a mystery, even to me.

Today Cinemax ran all 6 Star Wars movies, beginning with Episodes 4, 5, and 6, and then showing Episodes 1, 2, and 3. I didn't watch them but I passed them as I was surfing during the day.

DR Laura.......how can you be over in L.A., and not pop in to the book signing in Glendale this evening?? There might even be House Of Pies or something afterwards.
Well, DR MusicGuy, I wanted to go -- but they flew me over this morning and flew me home this afternoon. I didn't get out of the meeting until the booksigning was probably about over.
But at least the wireless internet kept me amused during the boring parts!
And a marathon board meeting tomorrow. And no wireless internet at this one!

I hear it working as I type. I did walk each cat over and show them the new set-up and they each explored it a bit. When Walty used it, I pet him afterwards. And for good measure I put the vacuum where the boxes used to be. They hate the vacuum, so I thought this would help them forget the old set-up.

Today, Kachina, the 20 year old cat at the World of Wisdom was in a very strange mood.
She is taking medication for her thyroid, and didn't eat much food, she was very needy all day...so I held her a lot. Four times she dropped onto her side and started swatting the air and hissing. Once she started it when she was in my arms.
I called my sister and I think she is taking Kachina to the pet emergency. I hope she is allright.
It seemed almost to be a type of seizure.

Today "Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me" was on when Paul and I were going to Barnes and Noble. They went to a break with the song Ma Na Ma Nop and we both immediately started singing along and dancing in the car. It was pretty funny

I did yard work until the cold, windy rainstorm started, then came home and took a hot shower and finished "Benjamin Kritzer". Now I'm all weepy and can't stop crying! I was enjoying it so much but the ending just hit me in the gut, especailly because I moved so much as a child and the whole sense of loss came flooding back. I will return when I'm more composed...

We had this absolutely beautiful day today, couldn't have been clearer or more gorgeous. At some point this evening, I looked out the window, and I realized it's been raining for hours. Here it is close to 11:30, and it's still raining.

I had a mostly Rodgers and Hammerstein evening for myself tonight.
I began with the new DVD issue of CAROUSEL. Looked just wonderful. And due to the anamorphic encoding on this transfer, all the aliasing that happened on the old disc in the checkered pants and striped shirts was nowhere to be seen. It's a sharp, clean transfer. I didn't think the color was vibrant. It's saturated and rich, but it seems pretty flat in this DVD. But not having watched the old disc is awhile, maybe the color didn't sparkle in that either.

I watched the "Making of Carousel" on the second disc. It gave the background on how R&H came to write the stage version, and what changes they made from LILIOM (with clips from the movie that's also on the disc).
Sad to say, not one word in this documentary about the making of the film version of CAROUSEL. All that interesting stuff about the casting of Frank Sinatra and his walking off the picture after doing costume and makeup tests and prerecording the score was nowhere on this disc. In order to get the background on the making of the film, one will have to watch the documentary THE SOUND OF MOVIES narrated by Shirley Jones. That was disappointing.

After putting away CAROUSEL, I pulled the Julie Andrews version of CINDERELLA off the shelf. I hadn't watched it in some time, and I enjoyed it all over again. Even in the cramped spaces of that theater turned into a TV studio, the show just glows.
I probably saw this (like most of the rest of the US) when it first aired, but I have no memory of it. The Lesley Ann Warren version is the one I grew up watching and loving, and I do find it just the slightest bit more romantic. Julie, of course, does sing circles around Lesley. How ironic they both worked together on VICTOR/VICTORIA so many years later.

I watched the excellent "Making of" documentary on the CINDERELLA disc. How I wish they could have located a color film version of the broadcast. How short-sighted they were back then.

I ended my evening finishing the CSI: MIAMI episode I had begun this afternoon. It was a good introduction to the continuing threat of the Malle Noche gang that was present all season

So, tomorrow, I'll catch up on the three TV shows on the DVR that I didn't get to today at all: SUPERNATURAL, VANISHED, and LAW & ORDER.

Back from signing, which was so much fun - about twelve people in attendance, and the reading went very well, books were sold and cake was eaten. Rehearsal was fun - today I just got to watch while the kids learned their tap choreography, which is very cute. I must now eat.

Today was a day of purchasing, removing, moving and installing door knobs. I went to The Home Depot and bought a bunch of door knobs for my new place (it'll be a while before I can install them), and then I went to my sister's house and removed all the brass door knobs from that house and installed them in the house that she's selling (they're only three years old and still quite nice). Then I had to install all new door knobs (actually, these were more decorative door handles) in the house she lives in and is not selling.
I spent way too much time on my knees! ;)

Now I'm at home and need to watch the last two episodes of "Ugly Betty" and "Grey's Anatomy." I don't think that I'll be able to watch all four episodes tonight...as much as I'd like to. I also have several things on the DVR that I need to watch and then delete, but since my sister requires my assistance tomorrow (and it's not optional ::)), I'll be busy then, too.

Edisaurus, you have brought back such memories of my early Atlanta days. When we moved there, we didn't even have cable, so channel 69 was something cool to tune to on the UHF dial. It was the first TV station I ever went to in person (went there to pick up an LP I won in some call-in contest—by a band called Arms Akimbo).
I don't think that I've ever watched any UHF channels...just 2-13 and then we got VCRs where you could get the higher channels, but they weren't UHF.
