At my age I am lucky if I can remember last Christmas. I have only had two Christmas days away from Oz and family and they were both special. A Christmas spent in Christchurch New Zealand with Colin and a Christmas with two friends in London. One of those friends is now in a nursing home and has been sufferering from Dementia for 5 years. She is only 65. Bitter sweet memories of our time together in London. I now even more appreciate all those Christmas days with my mother who indeed was the glue that held so much together in the lives of her family and friends.

Once again Happy Birthday to those who celebrate today. (I am in the "Window" where indeed we are sharing the same day for a few hours)

Happy Birthday to DR WILLIAM F ORR and DR CRAIG!!!  ;D

Nice chat last night.....

A Christmas Memory - one of my favorite stories by Mr Truman Capote!

I shall have to think if I have a favorite personal memory to share.  Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm..............

It is raining here right now - hopefully it will rain all day and will not turn into sleet or ice.  Yes....yes....there is a meeting tonight with a few members of the Board of my theatre group to try to "work out the problems" because they don't want me to leave.

That makes me feel very good - but I am not sure the problems can be worked out.  As Joan Crawford said:  "Time will tell."

Bonjour, tristesse!  :'(

Favorite Christmas memories? Remembering New York during the holiday season. Not picture-perfect Rockefeller Center, but Automat coffee; slushy escalators as you exit the 59th Street station; the blast of steam from the chestnut cart outside the Museum of Modern Art; and the sound of the orchestra warming up as the Promises, Promises overture is about to begin.

This may not be my favorite Christmas memory, but it is a fun story anyway.

I lived in the Los Angeles area for a few years in the early 80s (I wish I knew BK then).  One Christmas I was at a party with a few friends.  Three of them and I left at the same time after having a few drinks too many.  About a block away from the party we saw a house that was decorated more gaudily than any of us had ever seen.  Because we had those drinks we were feeling no pain and decide to ring the doorbell and tell the people (with a straight face) who lived there how beautiful their house was.  The door was answered by two middle-aged gay men who were so pleased that they insisted on showing us around the inside too.  If the outside was gaudy, the inside was even more so.  Even the bathrooms were fully decorated.  The last room they took us to was the kitchen where a woman who appeared to be in her 60s was sitting at the table.  Over Christmas cookies we were introduced to Yvonne Wood, the woman who designed most of Carmen Miranda's costumes for her films.

During the eight years my first lover and I were together, we both volunteered at MAP, the Metrolina AIDS Project. I was one of the hotline phone volunteers while my lover was a buddy for PWAs. We would each help out the other during busy times, he working the phones on nights when I was held late at school and me helping with Ed, a wonderful man in his last year or so of life.

Ed was a Vietnam veteran, and when we read in THE ADVOCATE that the AIDS quilt was going to be displayed fully for the last time (due to its enormous size) in Washington, DC, that spring, we knew what our Christmas gift to Ed would be. We booked round trip tickets for the three of us to go up to Washington for the day to see the quilt and for him to visit the Vietnam Memorial which he had never seen either (had never been to Washington at all). So, we got to open one of our gifts months later when we saw the smile on Ed's face and the tears in his eyes (and ours) as he saw as many marvels of Washington as we could squeeze into that day. I know it's a Christmas I'll never forget, even if we did celebrate it in the spring.

Speaking of Truman Capote's A CHRISTMAS MEMORY, that TV-movie adaptation with Geraldine Page is just wonderful. If you haven't seen it, try to find a copy or some channel that's showing it. We read this story in my ninth grade classes, and they always enjoyed seeing the TV adaptation after we had read and discussed the story.

Greetings all -- Rip Van Winkle has finally returned!  :)

I've been sick, sick, sick (count them, three sicks).  Oy, the congestion, fever and now the lingering cough.
Thank Goodness I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Happy Birthday wishes all around.  Gee, I can't believe it will be Christmas in a few days.  My favorite memory was many, many years ago -- Santa surprised me with a bicycle.  During the early morning hours, I went to check the Tree and not a present in sight.  :'(  So, I went back to sleepyland.  And Voila -- several hours later, Santa came down the chimney and brought a red bike! Yeah!  ;D

Wishing everyone a Happy Holiday!

I liked A CHRISTMAS MEMORY, but I think I identified so much with the story - it was strange to hear Capote tell it in his unique voice.  My imagination had already decided what the characters and locations looked like...but the final image still is haunting....  But the writing...the writing...is even more so....two kites dancing in the sky like two hearts searching for each other.....

I reminds me too of that story in Ray Bradbury's Dandelion Wine about the Grandmother who always went up on the roof in the spring to work on the shingles.   :'(

Good morning!

Well, it's the afternoon now...at least here in Fairfax, VA...  And it's a beautiful afternoon too!  The temp is in the low 60s!  Unfortunately, it looks like we may be having a rainy Christmas Eve, ah, well... It's all good.

Favorite Christmas memory.... hmm...  Nothing in particular...  However,  I still am amazed at how my parents managed to hide gifts from us when we were younger.  I mean, in a house with four young boys, there's bound to be some "reconnaissance" missions going on during the holiday season.  They would also manage to put stuff into our stockings - we would go to midnight mass - nothing in our stockings when we left, but when we got back... wow!

And there was the one Christmas when I was working in Ft. Myers, FL, and my ex, Steve, came down for the holidays.  The theatre was able to arrange a nice room for us at one of the small resorts on Sanibel Island.  We ended up being only one of four or five people staying there at that time.  The place even had it's own private beach.  It was very nice.  *And I'll be having Christmas Eve lunch with Steve tomorrow.  :)

Oh... and I guess I still get a little "nostalgic" when I go to church with my family at Christmas - which usually turns out to be one of the few times I go to church at all throughout the year.  The music.  The smell of incense.  The altar decorations.  Something very familiar and comforting about it all.  And the music portion of the service is always very well done - and moving.  -Although, I still find it a little weird having Midnight Mass at 10:00pm now.  -It was moved earlier for safety reasons (so that people - mainly the elderly - did not have to drive at 1:30am) - but it does get out very close to midnight, so...

OK - That's my morning ramble...  I need to wrap presents!

Growing up we spent every Christmas day with our Grandparents. As kids, me and my sister hated going over there because it took us away from all of our new toys.  Now that I'm an adult, and they are both long gone, I actual miss spending Christmas day there. Its amazing how perception changes as you age.

DR Jose mentioned "bagging gifts" which is what I usually do. OMG, it is so much easier than wrapping! I have never wrapped as many gifts (as I have this year).  Crazy. I not only wrapped my own, but also my sisters, my moms and my aunts (I think I will be the only one getting bagged gifts this year :)

Since I celebrate Channukah (even though my uncle and sister's husband celebrate Christmas, so we sort of do too), I have already gotten some of my gifts.

It's interesting celebrating both holidays, because we do my aunt's tree every year. And I made this tiny little $1 store tree pretty with ornaments (so I have it in the living room). It is so cute, I had to keep it.

I actually know all my gifts (i think).  Since I picked them all myself!

I am the easiest person to shop for, since I always jot down things i need or want.

Btw, my wicked cd finally shipped today, yeah! So assuming there is mail here tomorrow, I will have it then. Double yeah.

Well, I hopped in on a good day because I can wish everyone needed a HAPPY BIRTHDAY. HB to Mr. BK's older brother, the ACTUAL CRAIG and the ACTUAL WILLIAM F. ORR.

One of our favorites memories will have to wait until next year. It will be our Christmas in London. It's 5 minutes to 7 at night here in London (around 5 to 2 in the U.S. Eastern time) and we will be going out for dinner w/friends in about a half hour. We took part in a small party at our flat with the other residents and the staff of the apartment complex after we returned from Westminster Abby and Buckingham Palace. We are going to try and see the matinee performance of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang tomorrow and then a quiet Christmas day awaits us.

Again, happy day to those celebrants and I'll drop in again when I get the chance.

Next time you hear from me, I'll be supping on fried chicken! YAY!

Regarding the joint credit of Edith Head and Yvonne Wood, it's possible that Head had a clause in her contract that said she would get billing for every Paramount film no matter who did the actual work.  This was quite common during the time when the studios ruled Hollywood.

Happy birthday, Craig, WFO, and Bruce's bro!!! Eat, drink, and be merry!

Good vibes to DR Jennifer...I know what you mean, so here are some happy vibes! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Ugh, must go call the "boss," who doesn't pay me yet, so technically, he can't boss me around, right? I will *not* go into work today. No. I refuse to do so. My throat is bothering me. I am probably one of the biggest hypochondriacs, and everytime my throat hurts and my speaking voice is even the least bit
hoarse, I think, "AAH vocal nodes!" I freak out about it. So yeah. I'm pretty sure this is something cold-related...make it stop! :(

Happy birthdays to the Actualized Essences of WFO, Craig, and BOB (Brother of Bruce).

I passed my written CA Drivers' Test yesterday! Three cheers for Panni/Anna. Several people in front of me in line did NOT pass, no sir. And I thought I might not either - because very little of what I had actually read in my study booklet was on the test . And I was only allowed 3 mistakes before the ignominy of utter failure. How the hell do I know what the blood alcohol level is before you're considered blotto in CA? (Yes, I would've known had I read the whole booklet - but it was SO boring). I got perfect marks on all the practice tests, so I thought I knew it all - fool that I am. Anyway, through some lucky guesses and some lucky logic - I got only one wrong. I made the mistake of telling them what I actually do instead of what I SHOULD do when making a right turn. I personally get into any available lane. Of course, one should get into the lane nearest the curb. Shouldn't they have given me the point for being so honest? Anyway, that was my sole error on the exam. I now have CA plates and will soon receive in the mail my CA Drivers License. There was even an earthquake to mark the occasion.

How is Roller, DR Jay?

To clarify the Right Turn - I, of course, meant that I get into any available lane AFTER making the turn. (But shouldn't. Wrong, wrong, wrong!)

I was kind of wondering about that Panni! LOL! I was picturing you wiping out 2 lanes of traffic trying to make that right turn onto Ventura Blvd.!

Congratulations on passing your test, DR Panni/Anna!

Roller is doing better.  The vet is still not sure what's wrong.  Could be a heart problem, or perhaps pneumonia.  He's still at the vet for IV fluids, meds and observation.  I took him for a little walk this morning and he's still not himself.

Amazing..I went from Wenatchee WA, where the high temp was somewhere in the mid 30's, to Honolulu, where I heard someone say (with a straight face) that it had "cooled down tonight to about 72"  Bring on the tank tops!
Happy birthday to all those who happen to be celebrating birthdays!!!

I'm ba-ack... from the Post Office, that is... And what a wonderful trip it was!

Again, there was really no line to speak of, and all the extra helpers were in the line area helping people fill out the right forms, answer questions, directing them to the correct counter, etc.  Of course, this time, however, there were only about three "windows" open - which eventually became two while I was there - but the line still moved, and no one really seemed harried or annoyed.

After my five or so minute wait in line, I walked up to the window and placed my parcel and forms on the counter.  "Oh, Australia...," the man behind the counter said.  It turns out that he has a step mother and two step-siblings (one brother, one sister), who moved to Australia a few years ago (with his father), and he has not kept in touch with them as well as he should.  So, he proceeded to thank me for being his first customer for the day (they were in the middle of shift changes), and for reminding him that he should at least call them this Christmas and wish them well.  He told me his tale as he went about checking my forms, printing off my postage and accepting my payment - no real hold up in the line.  And as he wished me, "Merry Christmas," he extended his hand for a hand shake.  I wished him a Merry Christmas, too, as I shook his hand.  I walked out of the Post Office smiling.  :D

*And, yes, DR Tomovoz, you should have a small parcel from me by the New Year, if not shortly afterwards.

-And it still puzzles me with the way the USPS handles overseas mail.  By sending it "Economy", the average post time (air mail) is listed as 4-7 days.  However, if I had sent it "Priority", it would have taken 10-12 days - and cost more than twice as much!?!?!  Now, if I had wanted to send it Parcel Post, it would have taken anywhere from 4-6 WEEKS - and would have cost THREE times as much as "Economy" air mail - well, I guess you would pay more for a longer voyage.  I guess for larger, heavier packages it might make a difference, but when the send options came up on the screen, it took a moment or two to decipher.

I am staying with my best friend from college, Tiana, who was born here.  This summer she slept on my floor for a month whilst trying to find an apartment.  This is her way of making it up to me :)
I don't think we'll be island hopping much.  There is plenty to do around here as it is.  It's nice to be here with a local instead of in a hotel.  I feel less like a tourist.

Hey DR Panni congrats on passing your driving test. I remember passing the written part quite easily. Although it is scary when you are only allowed a few mistakes.

The part that freaked me out was the actual driving test. That is where so many people seem to fail. I wanted to pass on my first try. But I was told many people failed.

And I almost did. The instructor was not happy with me. I had failed my parallel parking on the first try (but insisted on trying again, and luckily was perfect my second try). But I had also rushed into the right lane very late to make a right turn (nobody would let me in).

He was not happy with me and said he should have failed me. But instead he passed me. Yeah.

DR Diane, ha! My guess for the box is one month!

Tomorrow night is Christmas eve at my aunt's.  I bought a whole bunch of stuff for my dog cousin. The dollar store here has a whole section for pets. I got a doggie stocking where you put the pet's picture. A doggie santa outfit, dog stuffed animals and more. And each item was only a dollar!

It’s very had to believe that we stand on the eve of Christmas Eve.  Somehow it doesn’t feel much like Christmas this year.

Best wishes and vibes to you, Dan.  I understand what your going though.  This is the first Christmas without a family member for me as well and without going into it, I’m having a hard time with it.  I know it sounds bad but knowing there are others does help–please understand it’s not that I wish that on anyone.

Well, what is everyone having good for Christmas dinner?  Thanks to a friend, I won’t have to cook this year!  Yay!  I was given a very nice gift certificate to the Honey Baked Ham Company!  It’s way to much ham for just Mom and I so I guess I will be taking ham sandwiches to work for the next couple of months to say the least.  I also got a nice green bean Casserole, some sweet potatoes to bake and finely a great cheesecake!  Yum!  I’m looking forward to it.

I'm hoping to get off from work early tomorrow.  My boss is nice enough to offer to bring me home if we do so I won't have to wait for the bus.  Of all the things I have to be grateful this year, a GREAT boss is one the top five.

Congrats to Panni who passed the  driving test!

May that never happen to you!  My best advise is what I tell people--"If you don't like the way I drive--STAY OFF THE SIDEWALK!"

A memorable Christmas story.

About ten years ago, Gord and I visited his folks in St. Pete's, Florida. It was a dreary and chilly Christmas day, and we decided to take a walk while G's parents waited by the phone. The downtown streets were deserted, and in our jackets we headed to the ritzy Vinoy Hotel, bought and divided a NY Times, and strolled through the empty grounds. I was absorbed in the entertainment section, quite a few paces behind Gord, when I sank - literally. I had stepped over the edge of the pool and gone right down into the deep end of the water. Soaked NY Times in hand, I popped to the surface, emerged drenched but intact, and caught up to Gord who hadn't a clue about what had just taken place. A dripping me and a numb Gord retraced our steps, past the pool and gardens, through the hotel lobby, and out the front doors, where we caught a cab.

This is actually a favorite Christmas story because when I told it back home it elicited much mirth, but never from Gord. He appeared sombre over my close call in the deep end of the Vinoy pool on Christmas day.

You have no idea how I hate to have to ask this question here,  but......here goes;

I have used a few of the devices on the "post" page, such as the "glow" and moving "marquee" features.  I do it by highlighting a word or section, and then clicking on the icon for glow or marquee.

But when I highlight a section and then click on the "font size" icon, nothing happens.  I don't see anywhere to specify a larger font size, and when I preview it it just has extra command words right along with my original text.

In other words,  I can't successfully seem to make anything bigger.  Even though, god knows, I get enough spam email offering to make everything bigger!

Help?? ???   ???   :o

So you are the one forwarding that spam MusicGuy! I still need proof that it works before I invest anthing. I have just started getting some unsolicited garbage which states that I signed up for such with my email address. I actually get very little spam.
I don't even try for "smiley faces" in posts. I have enough trouble proofreading without trying anything remotely complicated.

MusicGuy, I just change the number next to the size, and all seems to work. . .

Good story Dan. My wandered from there to a scene in "Gods and Monsters". It is a Christmas and one should have a few Christmas or other delights running though their mind.

I wish I had a memorable Christmas, but since I am Christmasly challenge I do not have one to offer. But I have seen more Christmas themed movies, andChristmas TV Specials and know more Christmas Carols/Songs than I have Chanukah related. One day I hope I will be able to relate.

Hey there are a couple of ways to increase font size. One is using the "WYSIWYG" button.

And the other is what the other DRs said, they simply change the number on the font size (by simply changing the 2 to a larger number where it says <size=2>.

Back from seeing THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING, and it is quite beautifully made, emotionally very moving if you got at all involved with the previous two chapters (I cried on three separate occasions during the film), and deserving of all the praise and business it's received thus far.

If I had a slight criticism, it was a lulling first hour where I found myself having to jolt myself awake two or three times. Things heat up immensely after that, but I did find the first 45 minutes a trifle slow.

Glad to be here reading all these lovely posts.

I had planned to go see COLD MOUNTAIN on Saturday, but I have a party that night (early New Year's/birthday party combination that a friend is throwing for himself), so it may be Sunday or Monday before I can make it to the theater to see it.

There were probably a half dozen previews before LOTR: TROTK, and honestly there was not a SINGLE film that I had the least interest in seeing. Some were advertising films coming this summer and others were for this spring, but NONE of them held any interest for me.

It had to happen.  One of our Christmas Tree ornaments has broken.

 :'(

It's my own danged fault.  I turned the wrong way, into the tree instead of away, and down the glass ball fell.  Of course, it was an ornament from the Grand Canyon.

 :'( :'(

The good news is that it wasn't one of the Grand Canyon bells, which I much prefer.  And at least it was my doing, and not the dogs, which could have incurred much wrath.

But still...

I just realized that I hadn't responded to the Topic of the Day, yet :o :  My favorite Christmas memories of Christmases past.  Both weren't actually ON Christmas days, but in December.

In 1995, I went with a local theater group on my first, and so far only, trip to New York.  We were there from December 26th through January 1st.  It was fabulous!  :D  I saw Victor/Victoria with Julie Andrews; Sunset Boulevard with Betty Buckley; Swinging On a Star:  The Johnny Burke Musical; and Robeson, a one-man (well, one actor and one piano player) show with Avery Brooks telling and singing the life story of Paul Robeson.

Several of us also got to be at a taping of "Regis and Kathy Lee" (my forehead was on national television!).  Kathy Lee was on vacation but Joy Philbin was Regis' co-host.  And I spent over $500 on records and CDs...including the LONDON cast recordings of 1776 and Children of Eden which I had never heard of (I should've gone to Footlight first...didn't know about it until too late.

The other memorable trip during December was two years ago.  My sister, my niece and I went to London (also first and so far only time).  We saw Starlight Express; the first two acts of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (had to leave early) with Frances O'Connor, Brendan Fraser (yum) and Ned Beatty; and Kiss Me, Kate with the WSMA Brent Barrett (yum and double yum!) and Marin Mazie!

I didn't spend as much money in London as I did in New York, but I got the Japanese cast recordings to Disney's Beauty and the Beast and ALW's The Phantom of the Opera as well as the London cast recording of Sherlock Holmes and the original (I don't know where) cast recording of A Saint She Ain't as well as several others.  Great recordings, all!

I took a lot of pictures in both New York and London.  Two of my favorites in New York were of Julie Andrews coming out the stage door of V/V with a baseball cap that had the logo of the recently (in 1995) not-transferred-to-Broadway production of Company and a picture of Betty Buckley after SB with all of the kids from the theater group around her.

In London, I was able to get pictures and autographs of Marin Mazzie, Nancy Anderson, Michael Berresse and Nicolas Colicos (he's real attractive up close)!  The only sad part was that the WSMA Brent Barrett didn't come out the stage door (if out of the theater at all) before I had to leave.  :'(

Those were my two most memorable Christmases.

Hey, y'all! Howdy from Kentucky! I got home just fine and I have supped on homemade chicken with noodles, snickerdoodle cookies and Krispy Kreme donuts. YUM.

This Christmas may prove to be one of the more memorable as my brother--oh, boy my brother--has the flu. We're still unsure as to whether he will be joining us at my grandparents' house on Thursday...if he's still sick, my dad will stay here with him and mom and I will go to Lexington for the day to see the g-rents. :-\

Good evening!

Greetings from Richmond.  The drive back was OK.  It rained the whole time, and there was a lot more traffic than I'm normally used to at that time of day - I guess all the holiday travellers.  There were also a LOT of trucks, semi's and 16-wheelers.  However, the rain did get pretty heavy a few times, and I noticed small "convoys" parked on the side of the highway every now and then.  In any case, I made it home safe and sound, and I'm actually kind of tired, and will most likely be turning in sooner rather than later.

Tonight's show was fun.  There was definitely an air of "we're about to get two days off" in the air.  The show wasn't rushed, but everyone just seemed to be in very good spirits, and the pacing did seem a little quicker tonight.  -Of course, it could have just been the Holiday Spirit.

-And the young man who got stiffed by his Secret Santa yesterday made out pretty well tonight - chocolates, ornaments, temporary tattoos, stuffed animals, etc.   :D

During the post-show curtain speech for the fundraising drive, they introduced one of the administrators from Food & Friends, as well as one of the original "founders" of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.  -And I'm pretty sure we broke the $20,000 level with tonight's collection.  Thank you, Arena Stage audiences!

As for how I'm going to spend my Christmas Eve Day, it looks like I'll be helping Steve, my ex, do his Christmas shopping.  ALL of his Christmas shopping.  He's been so swamped at work, as well as with his work for two of the local choral groups, that he hasn't had any time to get out there and shop.  So... Tomorrow should be interesting... and it will be nice spending some time with him too.  However, he does know that he's mainly doing the "gift card" thing, so that should make things a bit easier.

Of course, we'll see what time I end up waking up...
