Title: AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE
Post by: bk on November 12, 2006, 12:19:16 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you are, therefore, in the know, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently doing as little as possible, like Jake Gittes in Chinatown

Good morning, all!  I've been up since 6 AM; my colleague on BABES IN TOYLAND is finally back to New York, and we have about two weeks of work before The Brain consumes my life completely.  I think today we wil lay out the plan of attack for the next two weeks, examine what questions he has from the work he was doing in London while he MD'd THE LAST FIVE YEARS, and tackle - hopefully - the big Act One finale question.  I believe during the next two weeks he's only free in the evenings, which is good:  I can work all day here on The Brain, and then go down to 14th Street in the late afternoon.

After I return from the office, I have quite a bit of Brain surgery today.  My goal is to finish up the title song, its reprises, and "the Plan" and its reprise.

I also missed goddaughter Charlotte's performance in GODSPELL this weekend. I regret to say.  I'm sure she was quite wonderful, and I've sent her lots of flowers begging forgiveness.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Bal-Can-Can is an interesting film.  It's the story of Trendafil, a pacifist from Macedonia, and his father's blood brother's son Santino, from Rome, who swore on his father's deathbed to take care of Trendafil should he call for help.  Call for help Trendafil does, because the carpet into which the body of of his late granny-in-law was rolled (don't ask) has been stolen, and he must get it back.

Hilarity ensues.

The film (and second-generation blood brothers) pursues the carpet across the Balkans, with every conflict in that region exposed and ridiculed.  Some of what happens is downright surreal, all of it at least bizarre, and the ending is somehow heroic and satisfying.

Der Brucer did not care for the subtitles for Bal-Can-Can.  The optical printing was highly substandard, making them hard to read.  But this is one film that needs subtitles, and cannot be simply dubbed, since the dialogue is in Macedonian, Italian, Albanian, Bulgarian, and Servo-Croation.  That there are so many languages being spoken is part of the point of the film.

Maybe what we all need is good subtitles.

The Master, a film from Poland (in Polish and Russian) wasn't all that good, really.  Sure, a lot of the cinematography was wonderful, but the story was an impotent muddle.  The characters were almost sort of interesting, but gloomy, and everyone smoked and drank too much.

Here's a link to a comic (http://www.comics.com/comics/littledee/index.html) that says it better than I can.

Today, we're trying to get tix for Dreamship Surprise, a German send-up on every Sci-Fi smasho from Star Trek to Star Wars... wait, that only takes us from "Star T" to "Star W".  So, "Star U" and  "Star V" will be included, but forget about "Star X," which would follow W.

Oh, well, it's bound to be funny in spite of it's limitations.

We need to be in the tix line early, because these shows sell out fast.

I also need to get off work on time today, because I'm scheduled to get off at 5, and the film starts at 5:20.

And none of the festival screenings have trailers shown, so there's no buffer as to start time.

We'll be catching up later.

I've recovered from my weepiness of last night. I cry a lot in movies but that's the first book that's made me cry in a long time!  (I love movies that make me cry, usually...)

JRand56, I tuned in to Mad TV since you had mentioned in, and got some good laughs out of it! Thanks! Who know that Seth McFarlane was such a cutie? I'd never seen The Family Guy before but TBS just acquired it so I started cutting topicals for it last week, creating the template which they will then farm out to some company out of house. I have to say that I think ours are funnier than the ones that aired last night!

I wish the festivals did show trailers, but then they wouldn't be able to schedule as many films as they do. I guess they figure people will come because of the write-up in the program. I've been fooled many a time by a glowing description.

I just added some more credits to our Sacco and Vanzetti listing at imdb and noticed that now we have enough votes for it to have a rating. (You need 5.) Two old geezers (45+) gave it the lowest rating they could. I wonder if they have even seen the film?

Glad you liked MADTv, DR EDISAURUS.  I think the cast is very talented, and they do some very funny stuff.  They certainly hit the mark more often than some other shows.

I was a bit surprised to see a young and good looking Seth McFarlane myself - who knew?

I will watch for the FG spots - since now I know someone who worked on them!

Kachina's plight sounds similar to my 20 year old cat, Art. He had been taking thyroid meds (Tapezole) for several years. He got so good at taking it that I could pratically throw it acoss the room and he'd get it. He had also been having sub cu fluids for several years. He went deaf, and certain sounds would trigger these seizures where he would spin around in circles, then flop on his side and have spasms---sometimes loosing bladder control---and then finally come out of it, very groggy for a few hours. The sounds that caused it were sharp sounds...a spoon on a glass, water hitting the pavement, a can being opened. His last couple of years we found ourselves operating very quietly around the house. After he was gone, it was hard to get used to doing things at a normal level again.

Please let us know Kachina's prognosis, DR JRand. All my kitties have their paws crossed for her and send her healthy vibes.

These would only be the ones that run on TBS, and I only did the first few, to establish a style and look for them. I wish I could do them all---it's a funny show. And Seth McFarlane has one of the most beautiful speaking voices ever. He does the voices of Stewie, Peter and Brian Griffin. Pretty amazing voice talent!

Have you ever written a long post and submitted it, only to be told that you must be logged in and lost it in the ether? I guess my time expired while I was writing it. Drat!

Anyway---one of the guys at work gave me a CD of music from a Brazilian guitarist named Seu Jorge...it was mainly David Bowie cover tunes that were recorded for "The Life Aquatic". (Maybe JMK would like to learn "Sapce Oddity" in Portugese?) Jorge appears in the film, too.

There is a scene in the film where Bill Murray and Cate Blanchett go up in a hot air balloon above the ship. While they are having a conversation, the background music shifts to Joan Baez's Sacco and Vanzetti song, "Here's To You (Nicola and Bart"). It was totally random and I wondered how that song was chosen. I guess that's the case with some of Wes Anderson's films---("Royal Tennebaums", etc.) they are full of "random" stuff and the humor seems to be derived from just how very random it is. I can see some aesthetic references to the wildlife films of Jean Painlevé, which I love, but I couldn't really get into the film and felt the need to multi-task.

So, I'm wondering----am I just a 45+ geezer and are these films really funny? I'd be willing to give it a second chance if there was something I was missing. (I did like "Rushmore" very much.)

Good morning DRs, and DR Edi --

We must tip-toe around the Living Room, as the Grande Mensch is probably still in the arms of Morpheus and dreaming about tap dancing and book signing.......and Leslie Parrish.

and DR Edi -- I know what you mean about parts of BK's book.  WHen I finished "Adventures With My Father" I was really sad and teary.  Even though it is fiction, there is a lot of reality (I think) that is based on close life parallels to someone we know.  And I don't like to read stories where someone I know and am fond of, dies and is gone by the end of the story.  I'll be interested to see what you think of it when you finish the book.

I am making a very late start on the internet this morning. I had a horrible night of sleep. Let me just say it's HELL getting old when little aches and pains makes themselves known while one is asleep but not likely to remain so. Then, they ease, and one settles back down until he's awakened again. This happened three times during the night, and I awoke feeling pretty much zombie-like.

As I've been DVDing a lot over the last few days, I must clear the DVR of last week's shows before another round of show recordings begins tonight. So, SUPERNATURAL, LAW & ORDER, and VANISHED become the priority this afternoon.

If I watch a DVD this afternoon, it will likely be CARS. I did not see this film in the theater, but I bought it "blind" when the DVD was released. Ordinarily, I don't like to buy things without seeing them ahead of time, but Pixar has never let me down yet, so I took a chance.

DR EDISAURSUS - I liked RUSHMORE too....love the soundtrack CD...but I didn't like LIFE AQUATIC...not sure it's an age thing.  Maybe if you haven't seen a lot of films and/or movies, you would think some of the new stuff is great....without realizing how much of it really derives from older (and better) films and movies.

I'm up, I'm up.

edisaurus, I don't find much that purports to be comedy funny these days.  I don't think it's an age think, I think it's a "funny" thing - people are somehow happy if they laugh twice in a movie, and/or they have senses of humor that are very easy to please.  Not so in days of old, when you really did have to get a laugh every few minutes in order to have a hit comedy.

...we did pick out an assortment of holiday crafts to make.

Don't get me started on "holiday crafts". My daughter has decided that simply putting out milk and cookies for Santa is too commonplace. She has decided that the kids should put out "Magical Reindeer Food (MRF)"! She has decided to expand this "tradition" to include many family relatives and potential cub scouts, etc. The only trick is this: since the "MRF" is scattered on the lawn, it must be biodegradable (and edible for birds, etc.)! And she wants little glassine pouches she can fill with the food and staple to a card to give to the other kids. (Dummy me would stick with sandwich bags!) I did find a bunch of stuff - sparkling sugar crystals, sprinkles shaped like pine tress, red and green confetti (edible), rolled oats, green and red Tic-Tacs, etc. I even found some bags (Picture me in Michael's, holding up a bag of confetti stapled to a cardboard label, explaining that I don't want "this", I want to buy empty bags , like this - well, it worked!)  I told DD that I had procured a bunch of ingredients for her MRF. she was a bit taken aback - "I didn't want you to buy anything, just to shop and tell me about stuff so I could decide what I wanted. (She would mull over the data and decide three weeks later two days before Christmas that she needed the stuff yesterday.) I informed her that whatever she didn't want, I could return. She doesn't get the fact that it is easier to buy as I shop, and return the unwanted items then it is to shop, take, notes, then return to the stores (and find they're sold out) later.

I also scored, to my mind another shopping coup. Steve's Super G was selling all their remaining Halloween costumes at 95% off! I got Vampire suits (scarlet shirt with high color and long sleeves, mask, and full length black cape) for $5.00 Got a Ninja suit with tunic, belt and sword for $3.75. I even found a vampire suit that has a small hand operated pump you can squeeze and make false blood flow over the face mask! Heck, the Grandlads can have fun with this even if it isn't Oct.

The BLAME GAME:

There is a scene in The Mentor when a young couple is having a spat; the lass spits out "I may be the younger one in this relationship, but you're the child". The guy reacts with a sarcastic "Bravo" accompanied by a few hand-claps. The problem is the camera is close up on her for her lines, and we hear the first hand clap right before she finishes and we cut to him .

Blame the editor?

And I guess blame the director for letting my mind "free" to notice such triviality!

I am now curious about the arrangements (business, not artistic) for this Film Festival. They have Government, Foundation and Business sponsorships. They are charging $8.50 a ticket, even for the afternoon showings. They had sold out 27 showings as of last night. Two of the shows we saw were not sold out, but only had a handful of seats left. If every visitor only bought one ticket, they would have a week-end gate of well over $250,000!

I know the Festival does a lot of good work in the community - but just wonder how much of the loot finds its way back to the film creators? The Festival organization itself seems to be going great guns - they have full time year-round paid staff and are in the process of starting a building fund to erect a permanent facility to house their offices and film collections.

I must also comment that the entire Festival was one of the best organized events I have attended in many a moon (due in no small part to the host of volunteers at work.) They had taken over most of the 16 stage theatre complex and there was ample free parking.

It takes all kinds. I guess. The following bit was posted by an ex-Reagan Republican, now Kerry/Dean Democrat:

Quote
What's going on in Iraq right now is sectarian violence between rival Moslem sects.  The more of each other they kill without our help the better.  It has always been that way with the Moslem hordes -- population thinning eventually quiets them down and they go back to lying, cheating, and stealing in their traditional bronze age ways.

I sure hope this isn't the new face of Liberalism!

Years and years ago I read a book on editing and one writer said that it was not unusual to make an editing cut in the middle of a motion or sound so as to make the edit less jarring visually.

  Basil Poledouris (http://www.presstelegram.com/news/ci_4644408)

Quote
LOS ANGELES — Basil Poledouris, who composed the Emmy-winning score for the 1989 television miniseries "Lonesome Dove" and the opening fanfare for the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta, has died. He was 61.

Poledouris died of cancer on Wednesday at his Los Angeles home, according to Hanna Pantle, a spokeswoman for the performing rights organization BMI.

In the 1980s and 1990s, his rousing orchestral scores added heft to a raft of thrillers, including "Starship Troopers" and "The Hunt for Red October" as well as romantic features such as "Les Miserables" and "The Blue Lagoon."

In all, he composed for more than 80 movies and TV shows.

"He was one of the truly great movie composers. His music had tremendous emotion, a certain kind of nobility," director John Milius told the Los Angeles Times.

Milius hired his surfing buddy and University of Southern California classmate to score several movies, including "Conan the Barbarian" and "Red Dawn."

Last summer, Poledouris directed a concert version of the 1982 "Conan" score at a film music conference in Ubeda, Spain. He considered the experience a career highlight, said Doreen Ringer Ross, a BMI vice president who worked with him more than 20 years.

Born in Kansas City, Mo., Poledouris grew up in Garden Grove. He took film scoring classes at USC from famed film composer Miklos Rozsa. He scored more than 100 educational films before breaking into features.

Yes he is.   ;D

I saw this movie on a double bill with Judge Roy Bean one Saturday evening at the CenterBrook drivein in 1970.  I went back every night for the next six (until they changed the bill) to see it....usually taking a different person with me.  Although my brother Dane saw it a couple of times (it was summer time, no school).

I had a full afternoon of video and TV watching.

I began with CSI: NY, the last episode on the disc in the player. This one featured two murders: a woman in a building's water tower and the other a man hanging in a playground with a swing chain.

I only vaguely remembered having seen the episode before (obviously only once) and had no memory of the identity of either of the killers. Excellent mystery.

I must also comment that the entire Festival was one of the best organized events I have attended in many a moon (due in no small part to the host of volunteers at work.) They had taken over most of the 16 stage theatre complex and there was ample free parking.

der Brucer

Time to nit-pick.  The festival had sold out fifty-seven of their screenings, not twenty-seven.

Good showing, I say.

Dreamship Surprise: Period 1 (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0349047/) proved to be a total hoot.  Apparently, it springs from a German sketch comedy show, and follows another film the group made which was basically a western along the lines of Blazing Saddles.

Imagine a send-up of Star Trek, with Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, and Scotty (and a few others) crossed with a send-up of Star Wars, basically with the Princess, Han Solo, and Darth Vader (plus the Emperor hanging around in the background).

Now imagine all this with Kirk, Spock, and Scotty as the most fabulously nelly twits possible.

That's just for a start.

Somehow, the film also rocketed into a jousting sequence set in the middle ages, and a bit more Western stuff, all before reaching their goal of stopping something terrible happening at Roswell, three hundred years in their past.

The special effects were for the most part good, the performances delish, and there were a couple of puns that actually translated correctly!

Der Brucer and I loved it.

But he still loathes subtitles.   :-\

You could blame the editor. I would have tried to find another take with a clean version of the last word and substituted it, if the inflection matched. The sound editor could have done this, too. And the sound recordist should have noticed the overlap and gotten a clean version if one didn't exist. (Greg certainly would have done that!) So, lots of people to blame, including the director, who apparently wasn't as observant as Der B!

I know the Festival does a lot of good work in the community - but just wonder how much of the loot finds its way back to the film creators?

I  can answer that: ZERO!

I've had numerous films in hundreds of festivals, and have never seen one dime in return. But there is always the possibility of securing a distribution or television deal, so you go for the exposure. And the fun! This is part of the payoff, since we never make much money with docs. Going to a festival (a deductable expense) is how we take vacations. We haven't had a vacation this year, but next month we'll be going to the Santa Fe Film Festival. (I have two fiims there.)

One thing the Atlanta festival does is solicit all these entries (and they have hundreds of responses---sometimes over a thousand) and the entrants pay the fee---usually $35-$50 a pop. Then the festival curator goes to festivals and cherry-picks films and invites them to the festival. These people don't pay an entry fee. So it's knocking the other people out of the running who paid the fee in good faith to enter.

That said, when I showed our film at the Rome festival, I got to know the Santa Fe curator and we were invited there without having to pay a fee. I guess that's karma for getting turned down by the Atlanta festival!

Yes, right next to US 85 on an access road. That was the Ch. 69 I went to. All the interviews with rock people they/you did would be great stuff for youtube, if anyone kept any footage. Just because it is rare and, what else could one do with it? Did you know the guy, Glen, I think his name was, who hosted a show called The Jazz Beat?

Tomovoz, my query for you today is about a song called "Tom Tom Turnaround" by New World. Just reading the Chapman-Chinn entry in my Faber 20th Century Popular Music guide, and it says that song was their first hit. And the band was from your neck o' the woods.

Oh, and my question is just, do you recall the song?

Yep.  Australian trio who made the bigtime inthe Uk on "Opportunity Knocks".  The programme and their "wins" were the subject of some scandal re votes rigging etc!
They also had hits with "Try To Remember" and "Sister Jane".  Bigger in the UK than here.

"Try to Remember" was a hit for them here. (Jan 69)
In England there frist hit was a cover of "Rose Garden"

This is absolutely one of my all-time favorites, and the film that made me want to become an editor. (altough I didn't know it at the time...)

Bud Cort was in "The Life Aquatic" BTW. Even he couldn't keep my interest up!

And the name of the film would be????

I did indeed watch CARS this evening. Delightful Pixar animated feature. No, the story is pretty predictable (and having just seen OVER THE HEDGE yesterday, they share the same theme).

So, it didn't scale the heights of FINDING NEMO or THE INCREDIBLES, but their CGI animation continues to be head and shoulders above everyone else's. The race scenes are simply jaw-dropping, and some of the landscapes and other set pieces are peerless. And there's a sweet, tuneful Randy Newman song called "Our Town" that I enjoyed very much. Should be a cinch for an Oscar nomination if it's a new tune.

Put in the Cukor/Garland A STAR IS BORN to watch a half hour or so of it. I wonder if a new transfer would help the film. It looks good enough, but compared to some other Cinemascope movies of the period (THERE'S NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUSINESS and SEVEN BRIDES come immediately to mind), this doesn't look as good on DVD as they do. Of course, it's much longer, so I suspect more compression was used to squeeze the film onto one side.

Michael S - Which performance(s)  of BRAIN FROM PLANET X will you be at on Dec. 9?  Matinee, evening or both?

MBarnum - Will you be at either of the Sat. Dec. 9 perfs, or only the opening night on Dec 8 (aka BK's birthday, IIRC)?

DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES ramped up the melodrama tonight as we found out interesting things about Orson's mother (the wonderful Dixie Carter) and Lynette found out something that seems hideously disturbing about the new neighbor.

And any time Richard Burgi returns to the show, even for one too brief scene, it's a cause of celebration for me.

Once again, BROTHERS & SISTERS was my favorite show of the evening.

Grand family drama with some flashbacks to 9/11 that had me teary-eyed. Kevin and Scotty's break-up also had me teary, and Sally Field, Patricia Wettig, and Calista Flockhart had masterful confession scenes that had my full attention.

I will have tissues handy from now on when watching this show.

I'm watching Thursday's "Ugly Betty" and it just happenes that it'll be done when "Desperate Housewifes" starts.  The scenes with Betty and her boyfriend at the restaurant (totaly fish out of water situation) are very funny!  ;D

Wasn't quite the "free" day I'd been wanting, but almost so.  Had to spend a bit of time dealing with a major screw up on the postcards and posters for The Brain - an actresses name is not correct - the gentleman who mocked it up misread an e-mail and mistakenly hyphenated her last name with her character's name.  She's very upset, so I've promised we'll fix it, even if I have to pay.  I've written an e-mail about it and left a phone message, but haven't had either returned.  I don't blame her for being upset - I sure would be, and if it were anyone else I'm sure they would be, too.  It wasn't purposeful, of course, and she totally knows that, but she's doing the show for free, putting in a lot of time and energy, and all she gets out of it is being seen and having her name wrong is, well, just wrong.  We'll fix it one way or another, and soon.

What a long day...I decided to finish the project I started about 2 years ago, that is making a cookbook from my mother's recipe cards. Well, right now it's 300 + recipes and about 150 pages.  I'm only making 12 copies, but it's a lot of work. Much more than I thought it would be

Yes, it was in Fairmont, MN the Saturday before previews.  From what I've heard I'm not surprised it got good reviews. I think my parents got a CD for me. I'll find out when I get there for Thanksgiving

DR SWW thanks for the DREAMSHIP precis.....I was hoping you guys would get to see it.

Subtitles and all.

I would complain a lot less if the subtitles were clearly presented ("clear" as in easy to read against the background). Actually listening to the dialog in German was part of the fun of the film - no one does a better job of putting down the Germans than the Germans :) The actors spoke German almost as well as Caesar (Sid, not Salad).

The postcard/poster situation brings back memories of when Georga Osborne (who plays both Elaine and the Manzar in Last Starfighter) was for a brief while incorrectly listed as Georgia Manzar.

I have...for the most part.  But saying the lines to myself, alone in a controlled environment is very different than trying to remember them during a rehearsal with all the blocking and interacting with other actors and EVERYONE LOOKING AT ME!

And on that note (A-flat), I'm doing the Wussburger.  I'm not feeling too well and I don't want to catch anything.  There are less than three weeks before Cannibal:  The Musical (where I play three small, but pivotal roles ;)) opens, and now is NOT the time for me to be getting sick!

At least, if I do get sick and have to take time off from work, I can use my almost six-month worth of accrued sick leave versus my less than two weeks of vacation. :D

Good night!
