Well, you've read the notes, the notes were off and running, and now it is time for you to post until the off and running cows come home.

cDR Rodzinski---there were great interviews and segments that my friend and fellow editor Tom might have kept. He was compiling a lot of VMC stuff and said he would give me a copy. I had some bits from my demo reel that I gave him to put on this reel. If I ever am able to get a copy from him, I will make a dub for you. I'm sure it would bring back some memories.

I didn't know Glen. My time with the VMC did not end well. We had a group of investors who were leasing channel 69. They finally realized that it was like throwing money down a black hole and decided they wanted to buy the station. When the owner refused to sell, the VMC investors pulled out, and the VMC was technically finished, although it stayed on the air.

We all had to re-apply for our jobs with the owner, and we were all hired...at first. Then, people started getting fired. The new management was horrible. The  owner brought in a buddy of his---you may remember the ancient cowboy dude who had a very sleazy past---to be the new program director, while still keeping me on for continuity. He decided that the VJ's should select their own music. Well, the old music director had worked long and hard to get credibility and be reported in the tip sheets along with MTV and radio stations. We also had deals with all the labels that they would let us have certain music videos if we played others from their catalogue. I would work with the VJ's to make sure that music they liked would be represented, but there was a real science to programming that required a holistic approach, not just letting each VJ play whatever they wanted.

The cowboy dude, who apparently bathed in Stetson®, (whew!) brought in some young thing to be his "assistant". So you may have seen her on air, too. She would come and sit on his lap during breaks and the director said it was so dusgusting that he wanted to turn the monitors off! A special moment in the history of the station was when the bimbo's husband showed up and dumped all of her belongings in the parking lot, and placed their wedding photo in the VMC lobby. Sadly, I was gone before I got to witness that drama!

After a few weeks of letting the VJ's program their own shows, the cowboy dude  decided that they should pull their own copies of the videos instead of the assistants. B.J. Rucker, whom you may remember, was walking across the control room with a stack of 3/4" tapes in her arms and didn't see the hole in the floor where one of these geezers had pulled off a floor tile. She stepped in it, had a compound fracture of the leg, which essentially ended her modeling career, and was never compensated rightly for it. At this point I had had it with the VMC.

Glen was another buddy of the owner, or maybe the old cowboy dude, who was brought in as I was leaving. The cowboy dude, one morning, decided to call me before I left for work, and fired me over the phone. He didn't even know my name, and asked for the wrong person! I was in shock. I had never been fired before!

The VMC old guard were shocked, too. After all, I was one of the people who started the station and was the only original person left from when we went on the air. How could that be?

Well, I was depressed for months, but as it turned out, it was the best thing that ever happened to me, and I was just the first of a mass exodus from the VMC. I got back into editing, my first love, and never looked back. The VMC staggered to an end a few months later. Those of us who worked together in the original crew have remained very close---it's almost a feeling that we served in the trenches together. It was fun working with a video music pioneer like the VMC while it lasted---until the regime change, anyway.

We watched a movie last night. I had heard about how bad it was but I had never seen it. I think Ant had seen it many years ago. It was on Turner recently and Rose recorded it for us. The legendary stinker is called:

The Horn Blows at Midnight

Wow, what a dog! No wonder Jack Benny was embarrassed by it. And our lovely Alexis Smith. It had a roster of practically every character actor in Hollywood at the time but I don't think anything could have saved this turkey. As it was approaching the end I just wanted to push them all off the roof.

But the sad result was a traffic jam at the dance floor's center.

Tonight, on Heroes...

The entire campus gets in on the act when one of the football team's stars learns he has cancer and must undergo chemotherapy.  In support, and as a fundraiser, everyone gets their heads clipped.  Poor Claire, however, discovers that her ability to regenerate includes her hair, which grows back the moment it is cut!  Aaaaargh, the teenage trauma that comes with superpowers!

TOD:

I have learned about SO many films right here on HHW.

Hmmmm....if I were to choose ONE....well I can't....so I will choose two:

LES UN ET LES AUTRES - discussed one day in the notes by Mr BK...a stunning film with songs and music....

MY BROTHER NIKHIL - recommended and sent to me by DR MBARNUM.

Both of these films are outstanding in many ways and for different reasons, but mostly because they are about INTERESTING people.

Monday morning greetings!  Today is the last of my 5-in-a-row-off and it's a pretty special one - DH Richard's 60th birthday.  We had pecan waffles for breakfast and later today we'll go with our DS Rob to Montgomery Inn (http://www.montgomeryinn.com) for dinner.

Richard's birthday always represents for me the start of the holiday season - 2 weeks from today is my mother's birthday, 2 weeks from that is mine, and two weeks from that is Christmas.  That means that Christmas is 6 weeks from today, for anyone who's counting.  Scattered in there we also have Thanksgiving and several more family and friend birthdays.

I agree completely with bk about CARS' length and meant to mention that when I was commenting on it last night. The predictable storyline and the overlength were my two criticisms of the film. But most of it was very entertaining.

How ironic that we both watched the same film on the same day, and my friend Penny and her boy friend also watched it yesterday unknown by me until I read her e-mail this morning! Small world!

No movie discoveries come to my mind immediately, but I may think of some as the days goes along.

When I saw GOSFORD PARK, I was introduced to the songs of Ivor Novello, and I was absolutely charmed by them. Of course, it helped that they were being crooned by one of my current cinema favorites Jeremy Northam, but I still found them lovely and was very surprised I had gone my entire life without having heard them before that film.

I'm looking forward to watching last night's DEXTER after my lunch out with best friend John today. I also have COLD CASE and WITHOUT A TRACE to see.

I peeped over to CBS during commercials for DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES last night, and the local CBS affiliate was showing the programs in HD, a change from the past two weeks.

TOD:  Films that I came across late and even by accident that I'm convinced are great are the Day-Hudson films PILLOW TALK and LOVER COME BACK.   LOVER COME BACK in particular was a revelation, since I had expected a frothy little comedy and was impressed by its cleverness and the sharpness of its satire.

TOD as to music - I'd say my real appreciation for Stephen Schwartz's work came a little late.  I'd always enjoyed it, but his work somehow got lost respect-wise in the shadow of Sondheim in the 1970's, at least among my friends and schoolmates.

Hiya, gang.

Sheesh, whatta quarter I'm having. Papers, exams, projects, quizzes, and the marathon weekends for the masters degree... I have come to a conclusion... henceforth, I use ONE, count'em, ONE criterion for any pursuit: If I had a year to live, would I be doing THIS?

Anyhow, I'll be finishing up the quarter, then do finals. Then not register for Winter quarter at Cal State. I am reminded why I didn't do "college" forty years ago. Still, I am glad I at least checked it out. Don't wanna be sitting in my rocker at 93, wondering if I shoulda "gone for that degree..."

I do want to continue in the Spiritual Psych masters program, the marathon weekends and all - and I can do that for the whole 2 year program, for a certificate of completion instead of a Master's Degree. I would certainly be deeply immersed in this course of study, if I had a year to live.

Yesterday I took a break and took a walk. First time in weeks. A walk... It was glorious - happened quite by accident. I had destroyed a tire on my car, and had to find time yesterday morning to take it to Costco and buy 2 new tires... Okay, lady, it'll be about 3 and a half hours... YIKES!! But I have homework! Oh, well, I'll walk along the Venice canals and out on the pier, watch seagulls, BREATHE. Wonderful.

So that's the news - I have missed y'all...

The films of Toshiro Mifune are ones that I discovered way late. I have been a fan of all things Japan, but for some reason had never seen a Toshiro Mifune film before...well, after seeing him in the film SCANDAL I am now a huge fan of his! What an actor! What a man!

And Bollywood films I discovered late in life as well. India has been making films for nearly 100 years and it has only been in the last 3 years that I found out about them, thanks to BKs mentioning of the wonderful film GUMNAAM. well, one more down!  This score is a lot of fun, although God alone knows how BK will react to what I'm doing to his music.

I listen to his CD, mark up my score, decide what and where to go with it, think about the characters attitudes, and run.  The frustrating part of doing a show at a distance of 5000 miles is that you cannot stroll into rehearsal and watch or listen for inspiration or ideas.  some of my best ideas on the recordings with BK came from listening to him in rehearsal.

Oh, well . . .

I'm curious about something re: the shooting last week.  DR MattH speculated that what happened would really impact the show (nora's death). Yet last night they did not show lynnette being at all upset by things. She was worried about one son. But they did not show any guilt or remorse.  Plus little kayla was off at grandma's house.

So does this mean kayla will not be seen (we assumed she would move in with lynnette and family)? I'm almost wondering if the writers realized how much the viewers hated the whole nora storyline and are now going to pretend that it did not happen.

Does anyone else think the Cho brothers are too nice?  I almost think of the mom riding the bike had not told him to go ahead that the brother would have waited for her (and probably carried her rock up the hill).

I mean i don't like rob and kimberly but they actually handled the taxi situation the best (they kindly said they were in a race and were allowed to cut the line).

In contrast the moms were witches and just jumped the line while everyone yelled at them.

And the asian brothers annoyingly waited at the back.  That drove me crazy.

Well at least in the preview for next week it looks like the 6 pack (now 4 pack) will part ways.

My 2 favorite teams did lead the way for most of the show (beauty queens and male models).

But i do like the Chos. They can be good players and they are kind. But they need to be more competitive. This is a race for a million dollars for goodness sake.

And i still do not like the moms. It was sweet to see them watch videos of their kids. But they are constantly showing footage of them being witches.

Anyways, I think I basically missed most of VMC's run, for by the time I got to the ATL, it was just Janet Darr and The Butcher. Three afternoon video shows, and the rest was "regular" programming.

This is exceedingly scary......I ah ah agree with you DR Jennifer, well except for the male models, but they are starting to grow on me. I love the Chos, but they are too nice, they need to just play the game already

There was a power outage last night!  Here in Tumwater, the power went out sometime last night and didn't come on until about 10:00 a.m.!  I put all my jeans in the wash last evening and forgot about them until I was about to go to bed, but I thought, I'll just put them in the dryer in the morning because of the very loud and obnoxious buzzer.  Well, when I woke up, there was no power!  Fortunately, it came on just before I had to take a shower in the dark (whew), and I actually didn't get to work too late.  But I'm wearing my jean shorts and am a little cold. :(

And I have a cold.  DAMMIT!!  I felt it coming on last night, and I took some Dimetapp.  That's what ususally works best for me.  Hopefully, I started early enough and it won't get any (much?) worse. :-\

I do also like the Cho Brothers, and I do like that they are being nice and polite..which I think is important and part of good sportsmanship...but there are times when it is uneccessary...the moms aren't expecting them to wait for them each time...so they do not need to do that...I totally thought the moms were out of line crowding in front of the taxi queue...you don't do that sort of thing. If winning and money are so important to you that you give up being a nice human being and step on others, well then I just don't think it is worth it.

What I really appreciate about the Cho brothers is that even if they do not win, they will have enjoyed being in the race...and if you don't have fun...well...then...you just don't have any fun! LOL!

By the way, I thin Finland looks like a beautiful country!

spoiler guess

Since it was pretty proven last night that the man areested as the Ice Truck Killer was not guilty, I want to state for the record who *I* think the murderer is - the man fitting quadraplegics with their artificial limbs. I was suspicious of him last week, and after his few scenes this week, I'm convinced he's the killer.

I watched last night's COLD CASE next. The best episode of the season, a tear-jerker if ever there was one about the abduction and assumed murder of an eight year old white girl who was friends with a black girl. I guessed the "killer's" identity pretty easily, but I could NOT have predicted how the story was going to work out or how tremendously it moved me while watching it.

Ended the afternoon with Anthony LaPaglia's annual Emmy submission episode for WITHOUT  TRACE, this year abducted and tortured while trying to find a missing con man. Boy, the make-up, acting, and sound effects certainly made his torture seem VERY realistic. Very disturbing to watch but a good episode with several big surprises.

And I suppose that the fact that CARS  was the most publicized new DVD release of last week, had nothing to do with it?

Boy, the make-up, acting, and sound effects certainly made his torture seem VERY realistic. Very disturbing to watch but a good episode with several big surprises.

Yep, nothing beats an afternoon of realistic torture.

For me, however, the afternoon was lame/tame bycomparison.  Watched "Carousel" and its special features DVD including the complete commentary by Mr. Nick Redman and Ms. Shirley Jones.

I found the commentary fascinating.  Really enjoyed the discussion about Barbara Ruick.  Before marrying John Williams, Ruick was apparently married to actor Robert Horton (with whom she attended the premiere of the film in New York and both of whom were captured on the Fox Movietone News reel that is also on the DVD).

Shirley commented that she had worked with both Gene Lockhart and Ed Begley and always got them confused.  I have never worked with either, but I've never confused them at all. :)

Ms. Jones also had high praise for Jacques D'Amboise's dancing in the ballet and indicated she believed this was his first film.  Mr. Redman made no comment.  I thought for sure they'd both later slap themselves across the head when they recalled that Mr. D'Amboise was one of the Pontipee brothers in "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" before he made "Carousel."

Those few things aside, however, the commentary was fascinating and insightful and wonderfully interesting throughout the length of the film.  One cannot say that about most commentaries!!!

I have always loved this film.  And I love having it on DVD in this format.  The color, however, seemed a bit flat to me.  I don't think Fox lavished as much attention on it as it obviously did on the glorious "The King and I".

And DR MattH, you must watch with the commentary turned on as Nick and Shirley DO talk about the casting of Frank Sinatra and Shirley has some interesting things to say, including why she thinks he walked away.

A Witch Ball is not eaten, nor is it a body part.  No, indeed, a Witch Ball is a clear ball about the size of a Christmas ornament that has red threads wound inside of it.  It will capture negativity and dark spirits that try to come into your home.  They are fascinated by the colors in the glass and become trapped in the threads.

In the FWIW department:

Another film on my weekend's agenda was "The Fountainhead", the Warner Brothers epic with screenplay by Ayn Rand, herself, starring Gary Cooper and Patricia Neal.

What a movie!  This one transcends most over-the-top potboilers of its era.  In some circles, it's a near-classic.  What we have is the familiar story of Howard Roark, a man of principle who cannot get work as an architect because he will not conform to what has gone before...he will not allow his work to become a committee project.  Patricia Neal is Dominique Francon, a spoiled woman who is determined she will never love anyone because no one will ever be worthy of her love...something only a man of principle could aspire to..but since there are no such men, she is determined to be cold-hearted and removed.

And then she sees Roark in a granite quarry.  She storms and stews...she frantically paces in her bedroom...she seethes with unbridled angst and determination...and she smashes a beautiful marble hearth in order to get that man into her bedroom and make a connection with him.

He infuriates her.  He measures the hearth and orders the marble.  When the marble arrives, he sends a mason to install it.  She's furious.  She chases him down and whacks him across the face with a riding crop.

Oh...it's much too inflamed for me to go on.  It has one of the most glorious Max Steiner scores EVER...and it goes on and on and there is NEVER A DULL MOMENT.  Raymond Massey is very good as the editor of "The Banner"...the newspaper that tries to destroy everything that is good and noble, etc.,etc., etc.

I don't recall "The Fountainhead" (the novel) as being this brassy and trashy.

Thus, I can recommend it as a read and as a movie, both of which exist independent of the other...with the movie getting the "you'd never imagine this in a million years" award for its adaptation.

This is one hell of a movie that everyone ought to see!

I am printing it all out and making books to give each of my family members....jhvw, don't tell anyone.... anyway, I need a good title for the book.   My mother's name is Joan which is pronounced Jo Anne. Rodzinski the opening verse of "Hello Young Lovers" is something like:

   "When I think of Tom
I think of a night when the earth smelled of summer
And the sky was streaked with white
The soft mists of England came rolling down the hill
      I remember this
      And I always will"

Good evening to all you lovely and dashing and svelte hainsies and kimlets.  I'm just popping in to say...

It's been a  long day of errands and catch-up things, so I think I'll watch Studio 60, and then drift off.

But don't forget to submit it to a film festival in Oregon!!!

Any recommendations?

We submitted to a festival in Italy that seemed like a perfect fit: Festival dei Popoli in Florence, which focuses on social issue docs. And ours has an Italian theme. But we were turned down. Go figure! But we hope we'll have a theatrical screening in Oregon. As soon as we have an idea of where our distributor will be scheduling us, I'll post the info. I know we're the opening night film for the Human Rights Watch film festival in Boston on Jan. 17 at the Museum of Fine Art, and after the festival it will run for a week and then open in NY the following month. After that, we have no idea, but I hope it will play in Atlanta, too!

And I suppose that the fact that CARS  was the most publicized new DVD release of last week, had nothing to do with it?

Well, I can't answer about anyone else, but I had dozens of DVDs to pick from to watch yesterday, and I happened to choose the same one chosen by two other friends. To me, that was ironic. I have had it since Thursday, so it could have been watched at any time during those days. That was the point I was making.

Had lots of interesting video adventures tonight. I began with another CSI: NY epsode. One of the cases involved a rapist that one of the team was fired for trying to frame. They still didn't catch him in this episode.

Because I was so dissatisfied with the picture quality of MISSION IMPOSSIBLE III the other night, I put the DVD into a different player tonight and watched the first 35 minutes again. Either I'm getting used to its look, or it did look quite a bit better to me tonight. The player may have had something to do with it though I'd think a Sony and a Panasonic would show little difference if both were sending the data through the HDMI connection. At any rate, the picture was more pleasing to me the second time around. Since I only recorded 1 1/2 hours of shows tonight to watch tomorrow, I should be able to finish the movie again tomorrow in addition to tonight's shows I'll be watching.

I, too, enjoyed both "Desperate Housewives" and "Brothers and Sisters" last night.

SPOILER

"Desperate Housewives" seemed a transitional episode, of sorts.  It was interesting to see Dixie Carter introduced as Orson's mother...and one who may out-evil Orson...and to learn about the new neighbor's dirty secret.  Poor Lynette...she owes him her life, but....

I am looking forward to Mike getting his memory back...and I'm hoping when he does that Edie is totally embarrassed/humiliated/dealt with.

On "Brothers and Sisters", I couldn't help sticking my finger through what I thought was a gaping hole in the story line.  Justin being re-called to the Army should not have been a major deal with all that high drama, etc., etc.  The Army would not want him back if it knew he had a drug problem.  Plain and simple.  They don't tolerate drug/alcohol abuse.

I'm guessing that his drug use hasn't been a legal issue, and he didn't want it to become one.  But it surely would have been his out.  No need to overdose and induce a coma, for pity's sake.

THE CLASS gave Jesse Tyler Ferguson the spotlight, and he ran with it with a funny and charming performance, something pretty amazing since his storyline involves rather nasty adultery. You could hear the very audible gasp in the audience when all was revealed, and I'm sure they felt as uncomfortable about it as I have felt for several weeks with two adultery stories running simultaneously on this sitcom.

The Oprah birthday party story went nowhere, but it was nice to hear Sam Harris sing even if it was for just a few seconds.

Oh, I wanted to ask George, how is it you never viewed UHF channels back in the day? Were there no local channels above 15 in Washington? I mean where were the late night horror hosts and oddball religious shows? Although I know the west coast had cable TV long before a lot of places, so maybe it was never an issue for that reason.

I watched those two sitcoms while killing time before HEROES. THE CLASS, I find just terrible. Some really bad acting on there, and where is it all headed? HOW I MET at least has some likable actors, and that insane game that Doogie Hauser played in Atlantic City was inspired stuff.

Rodzinski, I don't know about Washington, where DR George lives, but in Oregon we did not have any UHF stations until the late 80s when Portland got channel 49 (Fox). However, cable was available at least as early as 1972 (that is when we got it) and our station availability went from 2 channels to, I think, 6 channels! I was in heaven!

Did someone ask for a parody of the Hello Young Lovers verse?  I call this one Hello Young Livers

When I think of Bob
I think about a day
When the room smelled of menthol
And the hair was streaked with gray
And the blue flag of Israel was hanging on the wall
I'll remember this and I'll have a ball

Well, it's late and I'm wound up from a night on the town.  What can i say?  :)

Feel better vibes for DR GEORGE.

Yes, George, do fight it off.

I, too, am in the throes of coming down with a cold.  Your last night is my today, I'm afraid.  I feel it coming on and there's not a thing I can do to stop it.  It's a freight train and I'm a confused hobo with his foot caught in the track.

Thanks JRand and Ron.  I took a nap after work and that really helped.  Rehearsal was stop and go, and we worked scenes as we needed them.  We didn't get to the end, but we got through all of my scenes.  I'm going to watch "Heroes" from earlier this evening, then go to bed.

And Vibes to you too, Ron!

Otherwise, good night, all!

When we moved to Washington when I was 10 (exactly 30 years ago, last month!), we got cable fairly soon after we got here, so we never needed it.  I don't remember anything about UHF before that.
