According to Playbill On-Line it was 50 years ago today that one of BKs favorite shows opened on Broadway:
1956 Dogpatch comes to life as Li'l Abner is staged at the St. James Theatre. Melvin Frank and Norman Panama adapted the Al Capp comic-strip, with songs by Johnny Mercer and Gene dePaul. The cast includes Tina Louise and Stubby Kaye dancing to Michael Kidd choreography.

Prince Humperdinck (the EROTICA NUT) was given to occasional bouts of ERUCTATION, which dismayed his friend Count Rugen. The poor, IRATE COUNT grew NEUROTIC AT the sight of the Prince decanting OUT CERTAIN brews, which he knew would lead to his sire's belching once again.

I do think that emmitt works really hard. His work ethic is one of my favorite things about him. It just seems to me that they were giving away 10s last night. I wonder if his moves were much simpler than mario's (they looked that way to me).

Question for DR FJL and his dear Skip... (this is actually a question the Vixter asked last night)
How did you go about getting permission to create a musical based on the the movie The Last Starfighter?
Did you have to show the powers that be your script and the songs?

I watched some of the Alice episode this morning. It's available on AOL at AOL TV. They have many Alice episodes to choose from but the Bruce episode is Sixty Minutes Man. Who would have thought that our Bruce Kimmel could do so well as a nebbishy, mild-mannered truck driver ;D

vixmom - I just happened to have written an email on the subject a while back, so here's the very brief rundown of getting the rights to Last Starfighter - i think there's more detail in the album liner notes:
I wrote a draft of the book of the first act of Last Starfighter to see if there was a musical there. We did not show the original screenwriter what I had done with the book for Starfighter at that point. The representatives of Jonathan Betuel, the screenwriter (who is based in L.A.), seemed to be willing to deal with us because they saw that Skip had already gotten great reviews in the L.A. Times and Variety for his score to Time and Again based on the San Diego production. Jonathan Betuel did ask to hear some of Skip's score to Time and Again before the discussions went any further regarding Starfighter. We had the feeling that no one else had ever asked about doing a musical of Last Starfighter, and that seemed intriguing to him. (We got a contact phone number through the Screenwriters Guild; they gave us the phone number of Jonathan Betuel's representatives, not a direct number. We didn't get a direct number for Jonathan Betuel until he was convinced we were legit and serious about the project.)
Every underlying rights situation is different, of course. We were fortunate that Jonathan Betuel had been able to keep the stage rights to his screenplay, so that we got to deal with the screenwriter directly rather than having to deal with a large studio for the rights.

I'm SO excited about the return of MEDIUM tonight. I welcome it back with open arms (and open eyes in HD, too!)
The new Taye Diggs drama DAY BREAK has not gotten generally good reviews, but I'll record it to see how the premise is going to work. From what I read, this is not a two hour pilot tonight but rather two one hour episodes placed back-to-back to introduce the series.

I have four hour long shows from last night to watch today, so I doubt I get any DVD watching in. If I do, it'll probably be more of those Warner Bros. cartoons that I started yesterday.
I'm on the very famous one with Bugs against the bull in the bullring.

Oh, I do have the special features on the JULIUS CAESAR DVD that I want to watch. One is a tribute to Brando and the other is the Robert Osborne introduction to the film that I skipped when I watched it last night.

The difference between Mario and Emmitt is rhythm. Mario has it. Emmitt not so much. Emmitt's size has a lot to do with that. I realize that, as an athlete, Emmitt has his own type of rhythm, but on the dance floor, he's a bit of an oddity.
Yes, Emmitt has worked hard and does a fine job.
But Mario has him beat by miles and miles for moves, rhythm and panache, IMO.
Just my 2 cents.

I didn't watch hours and hours of TV last night.
I did watch most of "Friday Night Lights."
What I did do was iron shirts. And trousers.

I think Emmitt has proven so popular to the masses because of how far he's had to come to pull within range of Mario's moves. I truly don't think anyone would think he's a better dancer, but as it was made clear from the beginning, Mario had some dance training before all of this started. Emmitt has had a lot of ground to make up, and I think that's what he's been rewarded for doing.
And it wouldn't surprise me to see him win. Folks love to see athletes excel in something other than athletics.

Maybe next go-around, Dancing With the Stars can entice O.J. Simpson to be one of the stars.
It might go a long way toward completing the whitewash over his guilt.

I see a lot of older Hollywood films are being released next week.
Fox is releasing the wonderful O. HENRY'S FULL HOUSE. Unfortunately, instead of giving it the bargain price of one of their Studio Classics or Noir lines, they're putting a premium price on it. As terrific as I think the film is, I won't pay $20 for one film with next to no extras on it. I'll keep the DVD-R I burned when the movie came on the Fox Film Channel.

Universal is putting together a set of classics: THE BLUE ANGEL, LOVE METONIGHT, PANDORA AND THE FLYING DUTCHMAN, THE GOOD FAIRY, but they're asking too much for it, too, especiall since several of these were released previously.
And then Warners is coming out with new sets featuring Laurel and Hardy, Abbott and Costello, and the Three Stooges collected from the few features those teams made for MGM/Warners. They're priced more attractively.

Tonight on tv we have the 2 hour season premiere of MEDIUM (on NBC). And at the same time is the 2 hour premiere of the new Taye Diggs show on ABC.
I actually won't be home at 9pm, so i'm planning to tape them both.

I personally think they have been too generous to emmitt. And i thought that they might have slightly favored mario (although the scores didn't show it). But i think it's because mario is basically dancing like a professional.
And re: them doing it so the judges vote isn't a factor. I personally think the judges vote SHOULD be a factor.
Anyhow even if the judges had given mario a perfect 90 and emmitt much lower, the judges scores still wouldn't count. They changed the voting this year. Last year if they had given mario higher (even by one point) he would have received a 1 for first place. But this year it's based on percentages. So all season the only votes that have counted are the public's votes.
I think that it should be 50-50. The public's vote should only count for 50%. I loved how they did the voting last year. This year it is quite unfair.

FJL has provided the box-office number, which is the easiest way to book them.
I have no idea what resids might be due from on Internet download, but having received a few residuals for the DVD release of episodic shows I've been in suffice it to say you could maybe buy a lunch at MacDonald's for them.

RE: dancing with the stars.
I think emmitt has done as much as he could do. He excelled to his capabilities. So basically he could not have done better.
I do think some people like the underdog. But i don't think that is why people are voting for emmitt. He is hugely popular. I mean he had millions and millions of fans before this show. ANd most people had never heard of mario. I think that is the difference, and that is the part i don't like.
I don't mind if people dislike mario. Or if they think that emmitt has worked hard. I just feel like emmitt's popularity is more to do with him being a sports legend.
Btw, is cheryl (emmitt's partner) starting to grate on anyone else's nerves at all? She is a very good coach. But she's acting like she thinks they deserve to win. For some reason with all reality shows i tend to favor the best vs the nicest.

There's a Todd Haynes intro on The Reckless Moment DVD and in it he reveals every single plot point, and they show clips to illustrate - the intro runs about twenty minutes. These stupid DVD companies need to call these things something else, like "an appreciation" or "so and so on whatever film" and then say clearly that there are spoilers within and it is recommended to watch the film first.

I am not sure. I think it may only include the phone voting. But i suspect that they are quite accurate. For instance if there was even a chance they were wrong they would say so in the percentage of error.

Morocco is a wonderful film and so are all the other von Sternberg/Dietrichs, especially Blonde Venus, my personal fave of their films.

I agree with you. Terry Jones introduces the Jacques Tati films on the Criterion DVDs, and if one had never seen them before, he gives away lots of jokes and sight gags. Unforgivable!
Robert Osborne's intros tend to be more background related types of things and almost never resorts to spoilers. But I haven't watched the JULIUS CAESAR one yet, so it might be a first for him!

No one watched the premiere of 3 LBS. last night? I didn't read any good reviews from national critics about the show, but our local TV critic (whose opinion was a day late coming since yesterday's paper wasn't delivered until today; see yesterday's posts for explanation) liked it.
I'll see it at some point today.

He is not unlike a silent movie actor and this lends itself beautifully to our production.
The characters and the visual landscape are also a gift for both myself and our designer Lez Brotherston. We have the creepy mansion, the graveyard, snow storms, the colourful suburbia of Hope Springs and of course Edward’s topiary and ice sculpture creations. The costumes too are incredible - from Edward’s ‘scissorhands’ to the sculpted bouffant hairdos of the female townsfolk. We’ll also be packing in a few surprises and I firmly believe that I have assembled some of the finest actor/dancers in the country to realise this unique piece.
Tim Burton, Danny Elfman and screenwriter Caroline Thompson have been fantastically generous in allowing us to take this highly personal creation and make it our own. It’s a creative partnership that promises to deliver a magical and unforgettable night out.”

It will be playing at The Academy of Music in Philadelphia. I tried to book tickets on-line and I kept getting seats in Row BBB or CCC - which did not show on the seating chart! (Logic would place them in front of AA - and that would be in the pit.)
I called the box-office, and sure enough they have added rows in the pit area! I don't mind being close, but for a spectacle like a Bourne ballet, I'd like a bit more visual perspective. It's only a six day run and the subscribers have all the best seats. I told the gal on the phone that I was open to any performance of the run - just two good seats if possible. She said would I go for a Matinee - sure! Well, she got me two seats in row EE (fifth row Orchestra) the second and third seat off the left aisle - not too shabby!

I think Emmit is more fun to watch. He entertains me. Mario is technically more precise and in that sense is a better dancer. But, if they were both headliners, I would pay to see Emmit because I know it would be fun and entertaining. I can't really say the same for Mario.
The judges said to Monique at one point that this isn't just a dance contest, it's about entertainment. On entertainment value, my 2 cents would go to Emmit.
But I do understand why others would prefer Mario

Lunch ran late (we also stopped by Costco), so I only got to a few things to view this afternoon.
I watched the documentary on the JULIUS CAESAR disc. A tiny bit about Shakespeare and more about Marlon Brando with copious clips from CAESAR, MUTINY/BOUNTY, and THE FORMULA. Because they were all in APOCALYPSE NOW together, Dennis Hopper and Larry Fishburne were there singing his praises along with Avildsen who directed THE FORMULA and some other talking heads. (Hopper was also in SAYONARA, but his only comment about that was that Brando hated Josh Logan and directed himself in the picture.)
Seemed to be a scrappy, hastily put together documentary.

The Robert Osborne introduction to the movie was very safe, more of an overview of who was in it, typical of his introductions to films on TCM. So, nothing spoiled for those who might not have seen the movie.

Next I watched last night's VERONICA MARS. Good little missing persons mystery to solve, but the real standout moments for me in the show were between Veronica and her dad. Enrico especially acted the heck out of the scene where it's obvious Veronica's is disappointed in him. You could literally see his heart breaking on camera, and it just broke my heart to see it.
And the end of the episode. Wow! However, I knew something was up when she left her drink cup unattended on the table. Not a smart thing for a woman to do at this college!

HOUSE had agripping episode, too, with John Laroquette giving an outstanding performance as a man coming out of a vegetative state with one day to stay lucid. Wonderful episode.
And David Morse's questioning of the staff is twisting the vise ever-tighter around House's "family." Devious but oh-so-mesmerizing.

He got up from the bar, jumped over the balcony and plummeted toward
the street below. When he passed the 10th floor, the wind seemed to whip
him around the building and back into the 10th floor window.
He took the elevator back up to the bar. He met the second man,
who was astonished.
"Oh, my God! I saw that with my own eyes! But that must've been a
one-time fluke. That was scientifically impossible!"
"No, I'll prove it again," said the first man as he jumped.
Again, just as his body hurtled toward the street, the wind appeared to
carry him around the building and into the window.
He took the elevator back to the bar!
Once upstairs, he successfully convinced his dubious fellow drinker
to try it. "Well, what the hell," the second guy said. "I've seen
that it works, so I'll try it!" He immediately jumped over the balcony
- and plunged downward rapidly passing the 11th, 10th, 9th, 8th floors...
Then his body hits the sidewalk... “Splat !!!!”
Back upstairs, the bartender who had been silent the whole time turned
to the first drinker, shook his head and said.....
"You know, Superman, you're a real ass when you're drunk."

I have no idea what resids might be due from on Internet download, but having received a few residuals for the DVD release of episodic shows I've been in suffice it to say you could maybe buy a lunch at MacDonald's for them.
Hi Esteemed BK -- I really had a chuckle reading this; year's ago I finally got my first book of original compositions published. I waited until the end of the year, and then got a royalty check. It was something like 11 or 12 dollars ! And you were literally correct ... I think Kerry and I had a hamburger each.

I have been sorting through CDs and DVDs like mad the past few weeks. I am in the process of managing my collection out of their jewelboxes and keepcases and into aluminum carrying cases (1000 discs per case).
Part of this process is eliminating titles I hate. Yes, it's the "floccinaucinihilipilification process' or (sorting based upon) 'the estimation of something as valueless' to me.
Dear BK: Here's a question for "Ask BK" day -- what DVD titles, if any, are in your "floccinaucinihilipilification" pile?

The year is 1957 and a fleet of flying saucers from Planet X have come to Earth. To tide me over until the January release of Doctor Who: The Complete Second Season, my loving yet cheap der Brucer has provided me with Doctor Who: The Complete Sixteenth Season. This was the year the Fourth Doctor met Romana, who accompanied him on his quest to locate the six segments of the Key to Time. Twenty-six episodes, six stories (including The Pirate Planet, written by Douglas Adams of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy fame). Enough to tide me over for a little while, at least! :D
(Why is der Brucer loving yet cheap? He was able to get the six-disc box set at half-price over at Amazon. All right, thrifty, not cheap.)

I think it's going to be around for a while, but it hasn't gotten worse...so far. I think I started on the Dimetapp early enough that the symptoms didn't get a chance to develop. Overall, I definitely feel "a little bit off" (a Maltby & Shire reference), but at least I'm not hacking up a lung. ::)

We had quite a day at preschool today. I had to miss playground time (my favorite part of the day) because I "got" to help a four-year-old with major Attention Defecit Hyperactivity Disorder do his art project. Oy vey.
And then for lunch we had English muffin pizzas (blech), orange slices, and canned peas mixed with cooked broccoli. We ate the oranges. When three-year-old Katie saw what was on her plate, she started to cry.

It is pouring down rain at the moment. We are under a tornado watch, and I can see why. It's really raining and very blustery out, too. Hopefully it won't last too long. The power has been flickering on and off a couple of times tonight.

I watched last night's 3 LBS. It was an OK show, but it seemed pretty generic to me. No one was really distinctive, and it doesn't look exciting enough to generate much buzz.
And looking at the ratings, it finished third in the time slot last night - 2 million viewers less than SMITH (the show it replaced) scored on its season premiere. Not a great sign.
Stanley Tucci did look absolutely magnificent when he stripped down to his boxer briefs in the scene in the locker room. The man is chiseled. Unluckily for me, there was a problem with the HD feed from CBS last night, and the local affiliate showed the program in standard definition.

The INHD channel has the rights to many 20th Century Fox films and shows them in HD. This morning, they showed STAR! and I recorded it. Yes, they're using the same print used for the DVD release with that brown wash on the image, but it did look quite stunning in HD. I only got through "N'Everything," so most of the really big numbers are still to come. Enjoyed seeing all that minute detail in the image.

BONES had a riveting and emotional story tonight as Temprance and Hodgins get buried alive in a car and must fight for their lives. A really tense episode that I thoroughly enjoyed. And since the perpitrator wasn't apprehended by the end of the hour, it probably means we haven't seen the last of him. I had my thoughts on who it might be, but I may have been way off base.

MEDIUM returned with a really puzzling and completely captivating case involving cartoons and an old love. I was loving every confusing minute of it and was happy that in typical MEDIUM fashion, all the weird dreams and visions tied together and made sense.
Made me realize how much I've been missing this show this season.
And Patricia Arquette's real-life husband, the magnificently handsome Thomas Jane, was the principal guest star on the show.

I did record DAY BREAK tonight, and best friend John called me after the show was over and said he liked it, so I'll see what I think about it tomorrow. Not planning any errands out tomorrow so I should have time to get to all these things I've recorded.

This was one of those "commercial" television evenings that had absolutely nothing that interested me. So I scanned through a DVD of "Carefree" to do some research for an upcoming interview. And then Kerry and I watched a compilation of just the "Opening credits and music" from a bunch of early Vitaphone/Warner Bros. movies. My friend, pianist Peter Mintun, put them all together on a DVD for us, and it was very enjoyable.
Then I ate a Milano cookie.
And that's the truth !

Back from our designer run-through, which went pretty well, which I think surprised the designers. Some energy and focus problems, but we have time to work all that stuff, and everyone is still getting used to playing our new space.
However, the evening had an emotional ending to it, which I've known was probably coming, but really didn't want it to. We've had to make the decision to replace one of our actresses - a VERY difficult decision as a) I adore her, and I've really enjoyed working with her and she's a terrific actress, and b) it's going to be very potentially enervating for the company, as they, too, all adore her. But it's become increasingly apparent that she was not going to be able to sing her role - she just can't hear the pitches consistently - one day she'll sort of get it, the next day she'll be completely off, and it just wasn't going to get better. Worse, we'd never know and she'd never know whether it was going to be okay. I talked to her about it a few days ago, and the real bottom line is, as difficult as this was for her, she did not want to get up in front of three hundred people and sing in the wrong key.
I'm off to eat now, and to ponder the replacement, which has to be swift.

I also really enjoyed (and missed) this show. And have they ever shown Devalos' wife before? I didn't even pick up that he was married. Not that that matters, but it's nice to see some personal stories every once in a while, except that I didn't care how Scanlon's personal issues were depicted.
