I am fairly certain that the first Paul Newman movie I saw was WHAT A WAY TO GO! I know that I saw it at the drive-in on its initial release, and I can remember Mum couning Ms. MacLaine's costume changes.  Recently I played the dvd for Mum and she laughed out loudly several times, having a ball watching it.

FAVES:
BUTCH CASSIDAY AND THE SUNDANCE KID

The first Newman film might have been The Silver Chalice. I believe it was from the ABC affiliate in Poland Springs Maine that when I was a kid had a 90 minute time slot friom 9-10:30 that had movies. It was also there I first saw A Star is Born with Garland and they started the movie with Esther and Norman going to her film premiere! (Now they may have shown the first part the day before but I didn't see that)

But the first film that I am pretty sure that I saw of Newman's was The Cincinatti Kid and that was TV.

First film I saw in the theaters was Buth Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, but I think I was more impress that  "Lurch" from the Adams Family was in it. (Hey I was a kid back then)

I did break down and buy the new version of SOUTH PACIFIC through DD's sale this week. Today, I want to watch the film with the commentaries on the various versions of the film. I suspect the actual soundtrack will be the same as on the previous disc, so I'm more interested in the picture quality and what Ted Chapin, Gerard Allesandrini, and Richard Barrios have to say about it.

Which team is "Blue"?

Did you like "Adventures of a Young Man" (Newman played the boxer....HE was the best thing in it, next to Franz Waxman's magnificent score).

Evidently I have never made an effort to see too many Paul Newman movies. I have seen HUD which I watched as a teenager, but only in order to see the seen that Yvette Vickers was in...and I have seen TOWERING INFERNO but frankly I had forgotten Newman was in it.

I think one thing that has kept me from seeing too many Paul Newman films is because it always seemed like then I would be seeing too many Joanne Woodward films.
Title: Re:YES
Post by: DERBRUCER on November 18, 2006, 10:23:46 AM
Because of Fletcher's deafness, I think it most important that he can sense a human touch when he comes out of his seizures. Fortunately, unlike some deaf dogs, he doesn't have an immediate "bite reflex" to being startled. I was stroking his belly when he was seizing the other night. Moments after he stopped seizing, and before he opened his eyes, his tail started wagging :D
He then opened his eyes and licked Woody's hand.

Moments like that make the other annoyances worthwhile.

Newman did not make that many films with Joanne as his co-star.  In one of the best, "From the Terrace", they had an adversarial relationship.

Newman in "Cat on a Hot Tin roof", "The Left-Handed Gun," "Exodus", "The Hustler", "Hud", "Cool Hand Luke", et al, defined masculinity in the movies in the late 1950s and all through the 1960s.  Joanne Woodward wasn't in a single one of them.

My favorite Newman film from that era is "The Young Philadelphians"!

I've been living in my new place for about a month now, but without a working garage door opener remote.  It came with one and I changed the battery, but it still didn't work (it's a Craftsman from Sears).  I didn't know if I would have to go to Sears or call a repairmanperson, so I tried looking on the Internet instead.  I searched the serial number and came up with instructions on how to reset the remote and it worked!  All I had to do was push one button on the opener unit (and the light blinked like it was supposed to), then I hit the button on the remote and that was it!  It's fixed and working!  Yea!  I can park my car in my garage.  Now I just have to get used to actually parking in the garage.  I'm not quite used to making the turn into it, yet.
Title: Re:YES
Post by: George on November 18, 2006, 10:52:34 AM
And since my automatic garage door opener worked, I decided to replace the deadbolt on the back garage door that faces my condo front door (I bought a whole bunch of new door knobs a couple of weeks ago).  The reason I wanted to change it is that there was only a dead bolt...no door knob at all AND no key!  I could only go through that door by going into the garage through the big door and then turning the bolt from inside to go out.  Well, I got the new locking door knob installed quite easily last night and when I tried the key...IT DIDN'T WORK!!  It fit in the key slot, but it's not the right key!  When I bought it, I noticed that it was stapled shut, so I guess that someone bought it and brought it back (there were no parts missing), but they brought it back with the wrong keys. :P I was planning on having two separate keys for my front door and the door into the garage (for security reasons...and I didn't want to have to pay to have it rekeyed), but now I'm going to have to.  I'll also have to make sure that the new door knob that I got for my front door has the correct key.  It doesn't look like it's been opened at all.  But I'll check.

In 1963 she was in A NEW KIND OF LOVE.  Maybe I should call that a guilty pleasure, not a great movie but I like it.

In 1958 they did THE LONG HOT SUMMER together.

She did take a long break from films to stay at home with the children.  Lucky for them but I missed her.

Good Morning All!

Paul Newman Favs
My most favorite film of Paul Newman's is THE VERDICT. A perfect movie with Paul at the top of his form. Two favorite scenes: When he goes to visit his comatose client in the hospital (no dialogue) andwhen he gives his summation in the courtroom (all dialogue). Absolutely superior acting. The kind that makes me sw-o-o-o-n!

Absence of Malice
Blaze
The Sting
Exodus
Paris Blues
The Hustler
Somebody Up There Likes Me

I believe I first saw him on television. The first movie was either THE HELEN MORGAN STORY or UNTIL THEY SAIL.

I spent the entire afternoon viewing time watching SOUTH PACIFIC and listening to the commentary. Ted Chapin didn't really have much to say but attempted to answer questions posed to him. SOmetimes he knew the answers but often he didn't.

The picture is simply stunning on the new DVD. Yes, I still despise the color filters, and now with the new enhanced transfers, they are deeper and more saturated than ever and thus more bothersome. Still, the scenes without them have simply stunning Technicolor photography. Awesome to watch. I may wait and watch the roadshow version at a later date. There's only so much SOUTH PACIFIC that I can take at one time.

DR MattH - I do  so adore how your mind works; I'm at this very moment taking a break from THE DA VINCI CODE (the transfer is top notch, btw) to feed & walk the dog and planned on SOUTH PACIFIC for later this evening!
A few nights ago, I watched and tremendously enjoyed REFLECTIONS IN A GOLDEN EYE.

DR TCB - someday (or night) you're going to have to show me all of your DREAMGIRLS moves . . .

How lovely that just about every MARY POPPINS review that I've seen and heard (even the ones that were decidedly mixed on down) had excellent things to say about Rebecca Luker's performance as Mrs. Banks.

Skip and Larry are seeing MARY POPPINS this very evening, to make up for the show we were all at where the set had broken down during Act II.

Actually RLP I have many times planned to watch THE YOUNG PHIL'S but always seemed to miss it when it was on...and it just seemed that whenever I came across Paul Newman on the television there was Joanne...not that that is a bad thing mind. I am just saying.

Actually, according to some of my interviewees, even when she and he were not in a movie together she was very often there on the set.

DerBrucer I have a question or perhaps you can give insight.....

It is something that has been pestering Matt Ashford fans for awhile. It has to do with a scene he filmed back in 1990 on a firetruck.

We are suspecting that the dog was either drugged, deaf or Extremely well trained.

It is a full grown dalmation and he standing on the back of the truck calm as a cucumber. As the truck takes off he is held by Jack as Jennifer is screaming at the top of her lungs and pounding on Jack. The dog just sits there unusually calm.

here are some screencaps... It isa VERY calm dog...

The dog might well be deaf (10-12% of them are born deaf).

The Story of the Fire Station Dalmatian  (http://www.chaplaincorps.org/index-1.html)
Quote
One of the most recognized symbols of the fire service is the Dalmatian dog. The origins of the breed are unknown. No one knows really how old the breed is. They were thought to have come from Dalmatia, but recent evidence shows them clearly painted in Egyptian tombs. It is known that the Dalmatian, because of its poor hunting abilities, was relegated to the stable area of fine manor homes. It was in these stables that the Dalmatian became acquainted with the horses. It is quite common to keep dogs and other small animals, such as goats, around stables to keep high-strung horses company to calm them.

Dalmatians were used by the fire service in the days of the horse drawn fire engines because they were not afraid of the horses and they would guard the fire wagons. Since in the early days of fire fighting all departments were volunteer, and insurance companies would pay only the department that was hooked up to a hydrant. This lead to competition and some sabotage between rival fire companies which led to the natural use of guard dogs to protect the equipment. The Dalmatian, with its superior agility and endurance could also run out in front of the horses and clear the streets for the approaching fire engine.

In this way, the fire engine did not have to slow down for traffic and make the horses tire early. When the horses were replaced by gasoline driven fire engines, many fire departments kept their Dalmatians. In many areas you can still see the Dalmatian standing proudly, on top of the fire engine as it races to another emergency.

Unfortunately, the Dalmatian Club of America (http://www.thedca.org/deaf1.html) has a very negative attitude toward deaf dogs:

Quote
With the rising popularity of the Dalmatian breed, there has been a rapid increase in the number of deaf Dalmatian pups showing up in homes, pet shops and Humane Societies across the country. THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS PROBLEM.

Deafness is NOT uncommon in Dalmatians. It has been estimated that from 10% to 12% of the breed is deaf

Responsible breeders NEVER knowingly sell, place or give away deaf pups to pet homes. Deaf pups should ALWAYS be humanely destroyed by a veterinarian.

The Dalmatian Club of America Board of Governors feels very strongly that deaf pups should NEVER be sold, placed or given away, and most certainly should not be bred from. Deaf Dalmatians are hard to raise, difficult to control ( they are often hit by cars when they "escape") and often become snappish or overly aggressive, especially when startled.

IF YOU ARE AFFILIATED WITH AN ANIMAL SHELTER, HUMANE SOCIETY OR DOG RESCUE SERVICE, PLEASE do not attempt to place the deaf Dalmatian puppies and adults that come in, and do not advertise for a "special home" for the"poor little deaf Dalmatian." The HUMANE approach is to put down the deaf Dals and concentrate on finding good homes for the healthy, hearing dogs.

These folks are so intent on keeping the breed pure that they actively boycott any Animal Rescue group that is willing to place a deaf dog in foster care.

Fletcher was pulled from an SPCA in NYC by our Delaware Dalmatian rescue where we found him.

(On those occasions when the tribe escapes, Bonnie usually stays with Fletcher; she'll come when called, and then run back and get Fletcher - we think she knows he's deaf.)

He is a very gregarious dog - loves strangers, particularly children and puppies. When we first got him, he was on a daily dose of barbituates to control the epilepsy. We decided to try him "off meds" and his seizure rate actually seemed to decrease. The other night was the first in a year.

I've been living in my new place for about a month now, but without a working garage door opener remote.  It came with one and I changed the battery, but it still didn't work (it's a Craftsman from Sears).

When we put up Katrina evacuees at our new house, I gave them the ancient Sears remote and explained that it was a very old opener and would probably be hard to replace, so the only thing I would ask of them is not to lose it. When they left town a few months later, they took it with them and swore they'd mailed it back but I never got it. Argh. The one thing I asked!

The night at the movies was a holiday treat. We all thought we going to see "Somebody Loves Me".

A similar error was made in  the nearby town of "Gosford where we travelled by Ferry to see "The Wizard Of OZ". It had finished screening the day before.  We saw "Marty.

You've got no argument from me...it's a fine song and she does it well.

Her overkill appearance at the Oscars a year or so back put me right off her...for a while.

But...the BIG number is "And I Am Telling You...", so the curiousity factor is huge.  I'm sure Beyonce will find her audience if the film is a big hit...just as Jennifer will....

Well, Tom, Ron P DOES have a fetching avatar.

Jennifer Holliday was terrific in a recurring role on "Ally McBeal".  The was a choir director who had been in a relationship with the pastor, got spurned in favor of a younger woman also in the choir.  Holliday would feature hymns that directed her anger at him or the other woman.  The pastor hired the lawyers to get her to cease and desist (as he didn't dare fire her lest he get sued for obvious reasons).

In one of the show's very best (among many great) episodes...during a funeral for a man whose last wish was to have it known that he despised people of diminutive stature, Holliday led the choir...with the congregation joining in jubilantly...in a rousing rendition of Randy Newman's "Short People.'

It was fabulous.

For some reason not given at IMDb, Ms. Holliday has not appeared on TV or in film since 2001.

I loved Ms. Holliday on "I Am Changing," though.

I just happen to prefer the title song to "And I Am telling You," I guess.

But on the plus side, Ron P,  someone was looking over my shoulder while I was on HHW earlier today and commented on how handsome your avatar is.

Ahhh, golden days....olden days....

For some reason I don't like Mr Newman's "Short People" song. (despite his comments that it is not really about people who are short in stature).

Mary Poppins? No, but thanks to DR Elmore we met Danny Burstein after seeing The Drowsy Chaperone and he joined us at Joe Allen.  He is married to Rebecca Luker.  So, I'm cheering for her.

I finished SOUTH PACIFIC to begin my evening. It continued to look every bit as spectacular as the first 2/3 of it I had watched. Mr. Chapin and Mr. Allesandrini hold the film in much higher esteem than I do.

Next I put in REFLECTIONS IN A GOLDEN EYE. I saw the movie for the first time at a revival theater in the late 1970s on a double bill with THE SERGEANT. The print they showed, of course, did not have the golden wash, so this version I saw on DVD tonight was the first time I've ever seen it that way. It does give an eerie, unsettling presence to what is a very strange tale indeed. The movie looked just wonderful in terms of sharpness, and the mono sound was full and rich. I got to within 20 minutes of the end when my friend called to come over to watch THE DIVINCI CODE.
Title: Re:YES
Post by: Matt H. on November 18, 2006, 09:01:35 PM
I thoroughly enjoyed THE DA VINCI CODE though my friend did not have the volume up quite loud enough for me. Of course, he had two young children asleep in another part of the house, and I understood the need to keep the volume moderate. Ian McKellan pretty much speaks sedately anyway in the film, so I brought it home with me to watch again at some point over the next week.

I hadn't read this book though I had read ANGELS & DEMONS. My friend had read it and said there was quite a bit missing.

DR td was correct. The transfer looks wonderful. Can't wait to see what it looks like on my equipment.

So tomorrow, I'll finish REFLECTIONS IN A GOLDEN EYE and get to Friday night's MONK. Then I'll have the rest of the day (until 9 p.m.) to go through some of the other DVDs that have come in the mail this week.

I'm back from MARY POPPINS, which I attended with the recent birthday boy Skip.  I had a great deal of fun, although I think the show's a mess with wonderful moments.  Too long, too many plots, and by the end, too many endings.  The cast is good, and I think Matthew Bourne's choreography the best thing about the show.  The new songs don't do much for me, but the cast is quite wonderful, especially Gavin Lee as Bert, who's an amazibng song and dance man.

Rebecca is beautiful as ever, sings divinely, and she has some wonderful moments, not to mention a figure that makes Edwardian and Victorian fashion poetry in motion.  I believe we saw the same Jane and Michael as before, and the girl playing Jane reminded me a lot of Hayley Mills in POLLYANNA.   Skip and I went backstage, where we met Danny Burstein and his two sons, two visiting friends from San Diego who knew Skip and DR FJL.  I also stopped by Gavin's dressing room to tell him how fantastic he was; I had met him in 1999 when he played the Prince in the BBC-Radio 3 broadcast of my Cole Porter show, JUBILEE.  Rebecca played the Princess in the original 1986 production of the show.  Small world.

Dear Friend BK, I got your message.  I suspect you want Gmajor over E instead of the Gminor over E in the printout I got.   I'll try that tomorrow.

And now, good night!

BK:

Have you ever consider writing an article for American Cinematography magazine and expressing your views what is wrong with color transfer of older films. Maybe people will see the error of their ways or maybe someone will hire you to do it correctly.

The dog might well be deaf (10-12% of them are born deaf).

The Story of the Fire Station Dalmatian  (http://www.chaplaincorps.org/index-1.html)
(http://static.flickr.com/58/165044502_a50213da6d.jpg?v=0)Unfortunately, the Dalmatian Club of America (http://www.thedca.org/deaf1.html) has a very negative attitude toward deaf dogs:These folks are so intent on keeping the breed pure that they actively boycott any Animal Rescue group that is willing to place a deaf dog in foster care.

The other night was the first in a year.

der Brucer

I do not like their way of thinking. People who think animals wiht problems should be destroyed often have the same attitude towards people. I had a cat that was once half-blind. Heck she got around quite well and was very affectionate.

With love and care most animals can be cared for.
