Finished the PC game NIBIRU and after the finale task the game came to an anticlimax halt. It just ended and was a major disappointment. The story was a good idea and could make an interesting movie but that ending! Also the dialogue is a little bit inane. It might be that it was original written in Czech as the creators and most of the technician seem to come from there. A main part of the story takes place in Prague so it was nice to see some of the sights again. But that English translation was awful and the "hero" was  an a-hole to other people and had such an attitude.!

Good morning, all!  I have tons of piddly errands today, a few Brain adjustments I received from the musical director yesterday, some Toyland work since I have to make a living, and the scoring continues.

I have already forgotten the TOD so I'll sign off.

I believe I'm going over to my friend Jeff's house later today to tweak the new TV we installed two weeks ago. Also, he has another component he wants to hook up to it. His parents are coming into town for Thanksgiving, and he wants the TV to be all that it can be.

As for TV tonight, while I really enjoy DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, the show I'm really eager to see tonight is BROTHERS & SISTERS. This show, along with UGLY BETTY and HEROES, certainly ranks as one of my three favorites of the new season, and I'm not sure that BROTHERS & SISTERS isn't my favorite of the three.

Last night, when der B picked me up from work, all I wanted to do was crawl into bed.  Unfortunately, since my bed is not on the floor, I had to climb into it.

The culprit was a customer from a couple of days ago who sneezed on me.  I don't think she did it on purpose, she was quite surprised by the sneeze herself, but yesterday towards the end of my shift I felt myself slogging terribly.

Der B had planned on us attending a local theater production of an original musical based on Sherlock Holmes (not the puppy), but I had to cancel on those plans.

Fortunately, I'm feeling much better this morning.  This is, after all, Thanksgiving Week, which is to the grocery stores of America what Valentines Day is to the florists.  I'm just feeling nasally, and the aches are fading away.

Toodles.

I see that THE TEN COMMANDMENTS - The Musical is coming out on DVD next week.

Didn't some DRs here see this show when it played in LA? Seems like the overall opinion was that it was a mess and close to a disaster. But, I really can't remember now if that was the critical concensus or not?

Can someone refresh my memory?

And it costs $17 at Amazon. That's not a terrific lot of money to purchase something blind that pertains to musical theater, but would it be a waste of money?

Hi, gang.

Up early for a long day of end-o'-quarter papers, exams, projects, reading. Oy, the reading! I had said i wanted to sit on my butt and read... oh, okay. I have about 350 pages today, another 200 tomorrow morning before I leave for school... research for a LARGE paper that needs many-count'em-many references, properly annotated... not enough to do the paper... gotta get them ref's in...

But! the weather is so lovely here in LA!! and I'm sitting in a lovely loft at the Marina (could be anywhere, though - I never leave to see the neighborhood...), with some lovely Roderigo playing. Next, Boccherini. I LOVE the smell of Baroque in the morning!

Gotta get outa here by mid-December... I'll start packing up after finals/after Brain. I'm looking to rent something, a guest house or something. Or, go back to my sister Rikki's place. need to chill...

Chill out in this great weather! Soon, very soon...

Favorite movie one-liners:  Much of the script of LOVER COME BACK

Doris Day:  Look at this packaging.  It's terrible.  The agency that gets this account is the one that shows the client the most attractive can.

I finished REFLECTIONS IN A GOLDEN EYE. It's such an odd movie, and yet one I think is kind of hypnotic in a lot of ways. And the yellow cast to everything makes it more hypnotic and unusual.

Elizabeth seems to be using the same Southern accent she used in CAT and GIANT, but Brando's is a more slurry and nasal Southern than he had used in previous films. Julie Harris didn't get enough credit for her work in the movie.

I spent the rest of the afternoon with MURDER SHE WROTE, Season 4. I watched all of the episodes on the first disc and the first two on the second disc. My favorite was the last one I watched - another episode where Lansbury plays her English music hall cousin Emma McGill. Rather than having Jessica in England and the two sharing screen time, this time Emma was alone in her murder mystery, and it was quite entertaining. Angela also reprised "How'd You Like to Spoon With Me" that she first sang in TILL THE CLOUDS ROLL BY.

Raccoons Invade Los Angeles Neighborhood (http://articles.news.aol.com/news/_a/raccoons-invade-los-angeles/20061119090309990001)
Quote
By NOAKI SCHWARTZ, AP

LOS ANGELES (Nov. 17) -- One balmy summer night, Larna Hartnack awoke to the cries of her dog Charlie and, to her horror, found the Dalmatian in a battle for her life — pinned by a gang of raccoons that tore into her flesh and nearly gnawed off her tail.

Charlie survived. But recurring raccoon attacks on dogs and other creatures have unnerved people along the Venice Canals, a funky, well-to-do beach neighborhood packed with ardent dog lovers, many of whom are now afraid to walk their pets at night or leave them alone in the back yard.

Communities around the country are plagued by destructive or aggressive raccoons, and many of them routinely trap, remove and even kill the animals. But this being California, the city's animal-control agency is instead urging people to try to get along with the raccoons — a notion that strikes some as political correctness gone wild.

"What we're trying to inculcate in the L.A. community is a reverence for life. If we have more reverence for life, it translates into all our programs — for women and infants, the elderly and everybody in our community," said Ed Boks, the head of Los Angeles Animal Services.

"Oh my God. I don't think I've ever been more insulted as a woman to be compared to a voiceless raccoon," said Hartnack, owner of Charlie the Dalmatian. She said the agency "seems more concerned with making a political statement than protecting people."

"Once you've been attacked by these animals and have them hanging out on your deck, your respect for their lives is lower than your respect for your animal's life and your own security," she said.

Dogs have not been the only victims of the raccoons. They have chomped on ducks, a parrot and the legs of a turtle that they dug out of hibernation. Nadine Parkos, former president of the Venice Canals homeowners association, said the koi fish in her pond were massacred.

Some residents tried to trap the raccoons but instead snared two cats and an opossum.

As for Charlie the Dalmatian, fur has grown over her scars, but she still whimpers and cowers when she sees raccoons approaching the family deck.

Hartnack and her husband have bought a BB gun and got the dog a stuffed raccoon.

"She loves attacking it," Hartnack said.

'Fraid if it were me I'd replace the BB gun with a 22.

Back from work.

The bad news is that, since it is Thanksgiving week, we are going to be working hard the entire time.  Lots of carts filled to overflowing, lots of cutomers wanting to get out of the store in the shortest amount of time, lots of tempers matching said amount of time.  The trick is to remain calm and nice to everyone.   :-\

The good news was that Edgar was bagging for me for part of the day.  Edgar is a young fellow who speaks very little English.  He hails from Texas.  What is great is how willing he is to give his all to whatever job he is presented.  Sweep/mop floors?  Sure!  Wrangle shopping carts?  No problem.  Bag groceries?  He's efficient, fast, great with the customers.  He was a joy to work with.  Too bad the rest of our baggers don't have his work ethic.

I would say, get it out of the freezer tonight and let it start thawing.  But by no means let it get any warmer than just thawed.  One thing you might consider is brining - the salt water is great for keeping the nasty bacteria away.  Not to mention, it helps flavor the meat.

The great news, that I'll be working on Turkey Day until it is way too late to get to Magic Mommy's place for dinner, means that der B and I will be dining together instead.  Just the two of us.

My solution is that we'll have a turkey breast to roast.  Yep, just the breast, no need for a whole bird for a twosome.  Besides, we've found that the breast does nicely to feed us through two extra meals.

Exactly what I'll be working up as our sides, that's still open for debate.

No, of course no tomatoes!

That would be heresy.

My way of thinking, chile should reflect the ingredients that were at hand for the cooks on the cattle trails.

I'm pushing it with fresh chilis - they more likely had dried, which they then toasted and ground down (or maybe not).

And "competition" chile never has beans in it.  Although I have to wonder why not, since beans were a staple on the trail.  That's why I'm including beans this time around.

Step one: sear the cubed beef in a quantity of bacon fat.  I happen to like the way the bacon fat flavors the dish, and since I'm not including any pork this time, the fat will compensate.  Searing the cubed beef also improves the flavor, by caramelizing the meat.

I do this over fairly high heat, in batches.  The seared beef is then set to rest on the side, not in the pan.

Meat all seared, I've now turned the heat to low, and added to the pan a yellow onion, roughly chopped, three pasilla chilis, roughly chopped, and three jalapenos, more finely chopped.  I covered the pan, and went to wash my hands.

THIS IS AN IMPORTANT STEP!  Have you ever chopped up a fresh chili and accidentally rubbed your eyes, or your nose, or any other sensative part of your body?  DOING THIS CAN CAUSE INSTANT AGONY!!!  Trust me, I did it once.  The stuff in the chilis that causes the heat can really hurt you.

Actually, on a day like today, we need soomeone like François to save our bacon (or tomato).  However, since François has removed his name as a member, I assume he will not be back.

It didn't take long for the veg to soften, so I tossed the beef back into the pan, and gave it all a quick stir.  Then I started adding the spices.  Two tablespoons of chili powder.  A tablespoon of oregano.  A teaspoon of ground cumin, the same of red pepper flakes, a large pinch of salt (I can correct that later, if I want to).

And a teaspoon of cocoa powder.  I find it gives the chile an interesting back-note, and cocoa is a traditional ingredient in Mexican moles.

I've also added beef broth, about 32 oz.  Normally, I'd use beer as part of the liquids in the dish, but we don't have any in the house at the moment, other than four bottles of "Midas Touch" from Dogfish Head, which has very mead-like overtones and wouldn't work at all in beer.  I'm saving the Midas Touch to accompany our Thanksgiving turkey.

I'm just going to let that simmer on low for a while.

There was a good thing that happened at work today.  Larry, one of our floor managers, was finally back on the job.

Larry, who is just a couple of days older than I, was out for the last couple of monts taking care of his David, who had some serious heart trouble.  Making things worse was David's family, some of whom don't "approve" of Larry.  The whole business has been a terrible drain on him, getting David back to health and basically running the homestead.  Good thing our company has been supportive during this entire experience.

Well, today was his first day back on the job.  I didn't get too many of the details, but Larry was a little afraid he wouldn't be able to make it through the day - the only physical ailment of his own is gout, which flared up while David was hospitalized, and makes it difficult for Larry to stand.  But he made it through his shift without any real complications.

It's good to have him back.

Oh!  I'm sorry, Ginny, I forgot to finish the story of my move.  I will be moving about 50 feet from my present location.  I will be moving into Apartment #19 in my building (to get away from those noisy kids next door).

Seriously, the move does away with the one flight of stairs I have had for the past five years, but still gives me a second floor balcony from the front of the building.  The manager is completely re-doing the apartment to my specifications.  New paint job in my choice of colors, new carpeting, and wood floors in the kitchen and bathroom (instead of that nasty carpet that I have had to live with in those two rooms).  Best of all, the floor plan is identical to my current apartment, so It is like not moving at all.

Hi Crew!

I'm angry. Why? Well there is a commercial for jewels or gold or something that features a clip from IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE. Now, people made a big deal years ago, that the movie was shown too much on TV and the govt. declared it a classic, and it was protected and NBC was allowed the exclusive broadcast rights, etc. And now it's okay to have this classic movie shilling for some jewelry concern? This is a travesty, a crock, and a shame.

A bit of an oops.

I left the heat a little too high, and most of the beef broth steamed away.

It's great tasting condensed beef broth, but not enough to give the dish the liquid it needs for it's final form.

So I added a couple of cans of chicken broth.

Why chicken broth?  Because I was out of beef broth, of course.

I could have added water, but I wanted the brothy flavor.

And I made sure the heat is turned down as low as possible.

(paraphrasing here, but one of my faves in Lover Cpme Back)

Rock (impersonating the shy doctor):  As my late father used to say, knock and I'll take you in.

Doris:  Doctor Tyler, I'm knocking.

Rock:  Miss Templeton,  I'm taking you in.

There...   ;D ;D

Me too...but Paul Lynde save FLOWERS....

I think Doris and Rock were always looking for properties....there was a clever PILLOW TALK sequel that they were interested in, but eventually Rock and Doris both went into television....and the DARLINGS and VIRGINIA WOOLFS of the later sixties made them seem like antiques.  8)

Yup now is just floating down the river with the other logs to be made into a dinette set and bunk beds.  ;D

But I have always thought casting Gig Young with Rock and Doris (as he was with Doris and Cary) - would have made it a REAL triangle.  I never much liked Tony Randall...   :P

I dug up the song for the Vip commercial in the musical version we had proposed.  Hmm..maybe there's a reason we didn't get the rights.  :)  :)  :)

As long as I've got my Vip
As long as I've got my vip at my side
I'm never a bridesmaid, always a bride
As long as I've got my vip

When you don't have a date
Then you should gravitate
Towards a product with zip
So full of gloom you wait
But hopes accumulate
When you try your luck with Vip

So why don't you take my tip
If life is a humdrum dreary old trip
Here's something to give your worries the slip
You're just gonna flip
For Vip

Weird story I just saw online about Michael "Kramer" Richards blowing up at the audience at the Laugh Factory, spewing racist epithets, etc. An upset audience member told the story to the news, and comedian Paul Rodriguez, who was on the same bill confirmed it took place. We'll see if this goes Mel Gibson level news or not.

One thing I did this weekend is something I have not done in many years. I bought a MAD Magazine. It had a funny Alfred E. Neuman as Suri Cruise cover that I thought TPunk would appreciate. Well, I didn't much care for DOWN WITH LOVE. I admired what they were trying to do, but I just didn't think either star actor had "it" for that kind of film. After seeing it, it gave me much more respect for Doris (whom I've always loved anyway) and particularly Rock Hudson.

And let me say that I do like Renee Zellweger very much in other roles. So, I was rooting for the film. It just didn't do it for me. Glad others liked it.

I watched a bunch more MURDER SHE WROTE episodes tonight from the boxed set. My favorite centered around Loretta's Beauty Parlor and involved the murder of one of the regular customers. Among the guest stars were Ruth Roman, Julie Adams, Dody Goodman, and two of Angela's pals from her MGM days: Kathryn Grayson and Gloria DeHaven.

I finally caught up with the MONK episode from last Friday. Some sour and sweet dealings with the father who abandoned his family (played by Dan Hedaya). The murder mystery was one of the more feeble ones. First off we were shown the murder in the opening scene, so like Columbo, the point of the show was to see how THEY figured it out. I guessed how that would happen within the first ten minutes.

So, the mystery part was disappointing, but I did like the father-son dynamic. I found that inevitably very heartwarming.

Brian Kerwin was the other main guest star. Between DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, GREY'S ANATOMY, and MONK, he's been busy the last year. (He's guest starred on some shows I don't watch but have been told about by others, too.)

"REGRETS ONLY" LAUGH LINE SPOILER

The proverbial everybody in town has been quoting one of the great lines from the Paul Rudnick play REGRETS ONLY, and since Brantley included the line in his NY Times review anyway, here's the line which has the whole town busting a gut, spoken by Christine Baranski about to embark on a swanky night on the town:

Early today, I went to my sister's house (that I just moved out of) and put up new smoke alarms, and we all did some of the last things that we need to do.  She has a refrigerator in the garage and as we started to move it to a different place, we saw a big, giant spider behind it!  It was huge...more than an inch long and a pretty substantial body!  It was alive and moved quickly.  Larry, my sister's boyfriend caught it in an empty plastic peanut jar and let it go outside (across the street ;)).

The problem with the rehearsals for the next two weeks (with Thanksgiving off) is that where we're rehearsing and will perform (a local community college), they charge for parking!  We're going to meet at a parking lot about a mile away and carpool, so that the people in each car can share the cost of parking.  So starting tomorrow, we'll be rehearsing on the set!

It's only $12.09 at DeepDiscountDVD.com (http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com/dvd.cfm?itemID=PLT048369)!  I'm going to get it...for $12.09, no tax (I have to pay tax for anything at Amazon.com), and no shipping, why the heck not? ;)

Horseracing.  I think "Brothers and Sisters" has good actors (I've watched three or four episodes), but I'm not interested in these people, at all.  I just don't care about finding out anything else about their problems or their stories. :-\

I checked DD DVD George.  With the 20% off you only get 8 commandments.  I think you miss out on coveting the neighbour's ass and honoring the president. I may have that wrong.
