I have no idea what the first professional production of a play that I saw was (hey, I made a palindrome!..."saw was" ;)).  Anyway, the first national touring show that I ever saw was Pirates of Penzance, based on the Linda Ronstadt/Rex Smith Broadway production.  I can still remember that Peter Noone of Herman's Hermits was Frederick and Jim (then only known as John's younger brother) Belushi was the Pirate King.

After the load-in last night, I drove another cast member home and one of his housemates is our costumer.  I got to try on the top part of my "Indian" costume and it's going to be fabulous!  That's all I'm sayin'! ;)

I do need to get new shoes, though.  I had some that I thought would work, but they don't quite fit. :P I hope I can find something appropriate and soon enough.

I know the first musical I saw was a touring production of Fiddler on the Roof with Paul Lipson as Tevye. (Sounds crazy, no?) Lipson started out as Avram in the original cast moved up to Lazar Wolfe and eventualtly played Tevye on Broadway. With all the touring and Browadway performances I believe he played Tevye for the most performances.

Play maybe a little harder but I think it was also a touring production of a children's play called Beware The Quickly Who which I saw in 1967 during the Canada's centennial celebration. I also think it was written for part of that celebration

I see a Republican congressman is going to introduce a bill to start up the draft again. Another congressman (Republican) who won't be re-elected in 2 years,

Also Henry Kissinger says that a military victory in Iraq is not possible. Interesting. Very Interesting. We will see what the outcome will be in 2 years.

Good morning, all!  At 7:10 AM or so, I was thrown out because of TOO MANY CONNECTIONS! puh-leeze!

Yes, DR MichaelS, I will be in LA.

And now I have to run; many errands this morning, and then back to "The Brain!"

TOD:  Camelot, National company, with Kathryn Grayson (oy!), Arthur Treacher and Louis Hayward.  I have no memory of who played Lancelot (Robert Gentry, maybe?).  It was quite wonderful, a stunning production, but even at the age of 17 or so, I knew it was a too-long, sexless musical.

My next was the National company of THE SOUND OF MUSIC with Barbara Meister, which was a total delight.

Nope, you've got it wrong.  The congressman is Rep. Charles Rangel, from New York. (http://articles.news.aol.com/news/_a/congressman-rangel-will-seek-to/20061119133009990016?ncid=NWS00010000000001)  He's a Democrat, representing the 15th district, which covers a fair stretch of upper Manhattan, plus a bit of the Bronx.  He's currently serving his eighteenth term in office, which suggests he doesn't believe in term limits.

TOD -

My Fair Lady.

Starring Edward Mulhare and Jane Powell!

Not a bad combination, that!!!

What was strange was that it was done in the round, in a large theater in the western San Fernando Valley that had been constructed for the production of musicals.  It failed as a theater, and was converted into a church.  I've no idea whether it still stands.

Minimal settings, of course.  One very good use of the stage was during the Ascot Gavotte - the chorus stood perfectly still, as the turntable stage rotated in one direction... and projections of the horses ran around the back of the theater in the opposite direction!

Hey, for a kid, that was fairly exciting.

Oh, last night's chili turned out very well!  Not too spicy for der Brucer, and chunky enough for my tastes.

Not what I'd suggest pouring on top of a hot dog, of course, that requires a different kind of chili.

And we've got leftovers!!!

Maybe I'll serve it on top of our Thanksgiving turkey, in place of gravy!!!

(Maybe not.   ::))

And last night I watched the first part of The Stones of Blood, the third story in the Key to Time arc of Doctor Who.  I told der B what I was going to be watching, and he joked "What's that, a horror movie starring Mick Jagger?"
"No, it's Keith Richard, I think," I replied.

Horseracing.

Speaking of Doctor Who, the Ninth Doctor, Christopher Eccleston, is reportedly joining the cast of Heroes, possibly as Siler (although the producers aren't saying what role will be his, as yet).

Somewhere out there, Siler knew the cheerleader existed.  The thought of her excited him, consumed him.  He knew that he must have her, a need that came from deep within, a mission in life.  He even convinced himself that, if he had her, all would be well with this little blue ball in space that he lived upon.

Hmmmmm.....I saw WILDCAT on Broadway when I was nine - so I guess that was my first professional production....saw several touring companies, but I can't remember the order I saw them in....hmmmm

I have seen VERY few professional plays....except when I am in NYC (on that rare occasion) - plays just don't tour like they used to.

I do remember a very nice FIDDLER in 1968.

First musical i saw was HELLO DOLLY starring at the time Ethel Merman.  For some reason, i have an indelible memory of what she looked like doing the line "Bridge that gap fellas, find me an empty lap, fellas."  Almost did it as if whispering, cocking her body as if telling the waiters a secret. but that stage whisper rang out clarion-like to the rear mezz where we sat.  Can't explain it well, but it was a lovely intro to the excitement of the stage.

First play was interestingly enough FOUR ON A GARDEN, starring Carol Channing and Sid Caesar.  My father managed to get ninth row orchestra seats for this, and Art Carney and Sheila MacRae were in the audience, and were SO gracious about giving autographs.  The show was a series of playlets, and only one of them was really good IIRC, but it was loads of fun being there.

For my 9th birthday in 1951 my parents took me to see the road company of SOUTH PACIFIC at the Shubert Theatre in Chicago.  We had great seats (5th or 6th row center orchestra) and I was quite impressed by the scenery.  I loved the show and it was my first experience hearing the word "bastard" - a word I was told not to repeat when I used it the next day.

TOD:

First musical: Touring company of "Hair", which came to Atlanta quite a while after its Broadway run. I loved the music from it when I was in HS so I begged my parents to take me.

I listened to the album recently and decided that the songs weren't really that great; a lot of them amounted to lists:
Hashish: a list of drugs
Sodomy: a list of...well, you know...
Colored Spade: a list of perjorative, racist terms for AA's
I'm Black: A list of "colors" of the people in the cast
Ain't Got No: A list of things they ain't got
Initials: A list of acronyms strung together in a loose-fitting sentence
I Got Life: A list of things that they *have* got
Hair: a list of ways to wear your hair

The list goes on...

I will say that I do enjoy the movie...

First play: Aristophanes' "The Birds", done by a local theatre company. LOVED IT!!

I'm happy that my two favorite teams finished first and second (although in the reverse order).

I get why some people here were sad at the outcome. But come on, the Chos were starting to drive me crazy.  They made mistake after mistake last night. I really liked them. But by the end i was not too sad to see them go.  It's a race for a million dollars. And they were not playing competitively. Or smartly.

They knew rob and kimberly had hired a taxi from the airport. Yet they tried to go out on their own without knowing where they were going.  And they kept waiting and waiting for the Bama Mamas.

The Bama Mamas also drove me crazy.  Driving off like that without telling the brothers was heartless (after all the Chos did for them). They should have told them they were leaving. And why use the Chos for the entire episode first?

I will be content if Rob/kimberly, james/tyler, and dustin/kandace are the F3. I don't really like the first team that much. But they played a great race and last night were good. And J/T and D/K were great last night. I especially loved how the Beauty Queens were trying to lose the models. Most people try to latch onto others.  I am really excited that we could have our first all female team to win.

My choices are: Beauty Queens, Models, Yellers, Mamas.

First professional play I ever saw...and maybe the first, period... was, I believe, a children's theatre production of BEAUTY & THE BEAST at the Emory Theatre in Cincinnati as a school outing when I was in the fourth grade.  It was very memorable and haunting...and owed more than a little to Jean Cocteau's film.

I was privileged to have a childless aunt and uncle who took my brother and me as their own and who took us to NYC once or twice a year for much of my growing up years. We almost always did musicals, however, as my uncle had a hard time following the plots of plays in the theater. He probably couldn't follow musicals well either, but at least there was singing and dancing as compensations.

Anyway, my first professional production was MY FAIR LADY at the Mark Hellinger Theater. Julie Andrews and Rex Harrison had left after two years and were either playing it in London or in rehearsals there, and I saw their immediate replacements: Sally Ann Howes and Edward Mulhare. I was very young (7) but I remember Doolittle's two numbers absolutely stopping the show cold and the audience standing and cheering them.

(This must have been 1969/1970)   We had front row mezzanine seats and I loved it!!!

I took several other trips with the library ladies after that... I remember going to the Shakespeare Festival in Stratford Ct... I believe we saw a Midsummers' Night  Dream and The Tempest there (2 different trips)

And away I go to work!

(PS to TMC - George Ball and Amanda McBroom are on the BK produced OCR CD of Heartbeats.  Great voice, his, I think.)

I saw Mr Ball in JACQUES BREL IS ALIVE AND WELL . . . twice, if not more, but I believe he was in a 1970 poduction at the Playhouse in the Park in Cincinnati and in the1972(?) production I saw in Philadelphia with Elly Stone.

Wow, I would imagine among ALL of us here at HHW - we have seen EVERY show that played on the Great White Way & on tour.

DR GINNY - I have (had?) a program from that Tucker-Weldon tour, and as DR MBARNUM said, I was also MOST fascinated that Ms Weldon had tackled giant ants in THEM!  She was a pretty nifty singer and looker, too, if I remember correctly, and their dancing was good, too.

Joan's on a couple of operettas, THE GREAT WALTZ from Los Angeles (DRG) and KEAN (SNY or DRG).  She had a glorious soprano voice.

Yep, I'm back from errands, and I'm procrastinating before I had back to The Brain!

As S. Woody has pointed out, it's a Democratic congressman -- Rep. Charles Rangel of New York.

I wouldn't worry about it.  The Democrats are more interested in bringing the troops home than they are in sending in replacements -- which, in truth, is the main reason a draft should be considered.

Not having a draft to replenish/refresh/make fair the troop rotations in Iraq is a major contribution to the dissatisfaction with this so=called "war" and the way the administration has handled it.

Re: last night's "Brothers and Sisters"

SPOILER

I, too, love this show.  I am totally involved in the characters and their relationships which totally ring true, are engaging and interesting and presents a family unit I've always longed for but will never have.

However...despite the show's timely handling of the problem of discharged soldiers being recalled and sent back...there are a couple of things that are so offputting to me that I can't just say nothing.

First, anyone who wants to write any fiction involving military ANYTHING needs to know what they're talking about.

That said (second), in the flashback at the dinner table, Justin announced that he had bought his ticket to Fort Bragg and would be leaving in two weeks.  Well and good the reporting date....BUT...no way did he BUY a ticket.  Recruits don't buy tickets to boot camp.  They report to the Armed Forces Entrance Examination Station where they took their physicals and they are then transported at military cost by military transportation.  Los Angeles has such a station...so Justin would NOT HAVE EVER bought a ticket to report anywhere just after enlisting.  (This might work, however, had it been what he was planning to do after being recalled.  He won't need retraining like a raw recruit, so they might just have him report directly to an Army post in which case he'd buy his ticket and get reimbursed after arrival).

Third...Justin is an addict.  Drug addict.  He has just been admitted to a hospital from a drug overdose.  That hospital is obliged to report this to some authority...possibly the police.  Before Justin is readmitted to the military, a background check must be done to insure he has not had any run-ins with the law or had any red flags raised by his behavior such as drug ODs documented in hospital records.

The Army WILL NOT WANT a drug abuser.  EVEN IF he rehabilitated, the Army WILL NOT TAKE him.  They don't do that any more.  They tolerate substance abuse at ZERO LEVEL.  Get caught and you're gone.  No treatment for purpose of retention.  PERIOD.

That said (fourth), this dramatic invention's lack of veracity has me truly steamed at the writers'  inability to present a realistic situation.

My Question from yesterday for Edisaurus:

Will your Sacco & Vanzetti film cover any new ground as relates to the actual guilt or innocence of the gents?

The little web-searching I've done suggests that Sacco was probably guilty, and Vanzetti probably innocent - and the evidence trail so muddled and compromised that no definitive conclusions are possible.

High School Gives 'Urinetown' the Big Flush (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,230614,00.html)
Quote
Sunday , November 19, 2006

Urinetown? No way. Urine Stevens Point.

"Urinetown" a comedy about a town plagued by such a serious drought that residents must pay to use public restrooms, was a surprise hit on the Great White Way. But while it suited Broadway to a pee, it just won't play in Peoria. Or the Wisconsin town of Stevens Point.

That was the ruling of the school administrators who brought the curtain down on a production of the show by students at Stevens Point Area High School, the Associated Press reports.

The show's bathroom humor and adult themes figured in the decision to cancel it, according to Principal Mike Devine.

"This is a K-12 public education system," said School Superintendent Bette Lang, contending the show's satirical and ironic humor was not appropriate for younger audiences.
...

But somehow their previous productions of the satanic musical Damn Yankees and the spousal abuse themed "Carousel" got the OK.

Nice change of pace for the show.

DR Ron,

It was mentioned on BROTHERS & SISTERS last night that the Army wanted Justin back and would handle his rehabilitation itself. That was their way of circumventing your criticisms. If I understand you correctly, the writers are totally off base about that, that this would never happen.

Is the policy you have stated for all the U.S. military or is it possible, especially in this age of a lack of the draft, that the Army especially might be a bit more lenient about it needing every body they can get their hands on?

I'm not challenging your knowledge; after all, you were in the service; I wasn't. I'm just wondering if perhaps things have changed a bit since Iraq.

It is certainly possible that in some cases, the Army would seek to rehabilitate rather than simply cast off.  I can also imagine that in the volunteer era, some cases might be referred to rehab rather than discharge.  However:

Army Policy:
In accordance with Army Regulation 600-85, Army Substance Abuse Program, drug abuse will not be tolerated and there are serious consequences for such misbehavior.

All soldiers, to include Army National Guard (ARNG) and U.S. Army Reserve (USAR) soldiers ordered to Active Duty (AD), under Title 10, U.S. Code, who are identified as drug abusers, without exception, will-

-- Be referred to the ASAP counseling center for screening.
-- Be considered for disciplinary action under the UCMJ, as appropriate.
-- Be processed for administrative separation in accordance with AR 600-8-24 (for officers and warrant officers) and AR 635-200 (for enlisted personnel).

Discharge for misconduct under Army Regulation 600-8-24 or Army Regulation 635-200, as appropriate, will be initiated and processed to the separation authority for all soldiers involved in illegal trafficking, distribution, possession, use, or sale of illegal drugs. Soldiers will also be considered for disciplinary action under the UCMJ, consistent with Chapter 6, AR 600-85 and Rule for Courts Martial 306, MCM.

All ARNG and USAR soldiers ordered to AD will be tested for illegal drug abuse at their reception station.

The ingestion of hemp seed oil or products made with hemp seed oil is prohibited.

One would like to think that a kinder, gentler U.S. Army might recognize its contribution to someone's drug addiction, but the Army has truly never accepted that notion as having merit.

There is also  this recent policy clarification  (http://usmilitary.about.com/od/theorderlyroom/l/bldrugtests2.htm) that seeks to ensure all branches of service are on the same page about drug abuse, especially "since Iraq."

Re: the assertion that Justin's problem would be rehabilitated by the Army once he was reinstated, given the evidence above, I find it unlikely the Army would spend money and time to rehabilitate Justin's "civilian addiction problem" with no clear hope of returning him to a war zone.  This is not Justin's first bout with demon drugs...something that has been unclear up till now on the show re: when did this first start and was he separated from the military at the time.

The show will be what it will be.

We are definately in Thansgiving Week at work.  Lots of shoppers, all of them in a hurry, some of them not very polite about it.  I had Laurie at the register behind me, Brenda at the register in front of me, and we survived by giving each other moral support... whenever we had a chance to breathe, at least.

And it's only going to get busier and busier as the week progresses.

Will your Sacco & Vanzetti film cover any new ground as relates to the actual guilt or innocence of the gents?

There is new information, as presented by David Kaiser, (author of Postmortem: new evidence in the case of Sacco and Vanzetti") but the central thesis of the film is whether they received a fair trial, which, clearly, they did not. It also illustrates the parallels that exist today regarding human rights and immigrants. And finally, it is a portrait of the two gents as seen by those who knew them and through their poignant letters from prison.

No good!  Weasels have and serve a purpose in the grand scheme of things.

Let's see....how about "He's one sick Osama" or "He's one sick Hitler" or "He's one sick Mussolini"?

Those don't work, either.  They were all leaders who ordered the deaths of others on a mass scale.  Compared to them, Simpson is trivial.

Besides, we're talking about a single sick weasel, not weasels in general.  Someone a sane weasel would avoid at all costs.

"Rabid weasel" won't fit, in this case, because that's more in the character of Fred Phelps and his family.

TOD:

Musical:  As I've said before, my first was "Milk & Honey" starring Molly Picon, at the Philharmonic Auditorium on Pershing Square in downtown Los Angeles.

Play:  I think "Fortune and Men's Eyes" starring Sal Mineo (who also produced) and a very young Don Johnson (personally selected by Mr. Mineo).  It was at one of those very small theatres in Hollywood.

In London, a new production of "The Sound of Music" has opened.  Its star is the winner of a BBC TV reality contest called   How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria  (http://www.theatre.com/story/id/3004752) which ran for 8 weeks as contestants vying for the lead role in the West End revival went head to head singing songs from the show.

Nope, you've got it wrong.  The congressman is Rep. Charles Rangel, from New York. His view is rather interesting.  He's saying that he believes one of the reasons the war has gone on so long is because a majority of the troops are ethnic minorities and/or of a low socio-economic status.  He thinks that once the lives of upper-class white folks are impacted to a larger degree than they are now, there will be huge pressure to bring the war to an end.

Shucks we can fix that - we'll just establish a "maximum" quota for minority servicemen - we can soon have "white's only need apply" signs in the Recruiting Offices. And while we're at it, let's make sure that the ROTC programs do not have a racial imbalance - we'll bump those deserving minorities right out and make more room for the suburban white boys.

I do like the show a lot more now than i did at first. I could not really get into the first two episodes.  I don't like it as much as UGLY BETTY or HEROES.

As for the whole Justin thing, what they wrote bugged me on many levels.  Taking someone with a drug addiction is bad enough. But he clearly suffered a lot of problems after returning last time. I don't like the idea of people being forced to go to war. But would they really send a drug addict who was a mess after his last stint?

Nobody else mentioned this, but did anyone else find the land/newfound money solution way too easy.  It seems too soon to have solved that matter.  And why let them off the hook so easily?

T.O.D.

As I have mentioned here before, the first professional musical I ever saw was ONCE UPON A MATTRESS with Imogene Coca, King Donovan, and Edward Everett Horton as The King.  Surprisingly enough, I saw it right here in Tacoma in about 1961.

The first professional play I ever saw was probably THE CRUCIBLE performed by the Seattle Rep, followed a few years later by BLITHE SPIRIT with Margaret Hamilton as Madame Arcati.

First New York musical and play:  The all-black cast of HELLO DOLLY, starring Pearl Bailey;  and the original off-Broadway production of BOYS IN THE BAND.  Hmmm, they both sound like musicals.

Antisocial personality disorder is psychiatric speak for sociopath.  Basically a person operating without a conscience.  It's a mental health diagnosis, but the person in question has the ability to discern right from wrong. They just don't care.  Usually charismatic, charming, manipulative.

THE CLASS had angst galore, and I'd just rather laugh rather than be put through these traumatic marriages and sour, suspicious relationships.

Once again, for me, the show was saved by the gay characters' storyline. A week or two ago, TV GUIDE critic Matt ROush mentioned that he thought a little of them went a long way, but for me, they could be the entire show, and I'd find it fun. It's the other stories that either don't interest me or make me squirm in my seat.

STUDIO 60 - well, the dialog is just a pleasure to listen to. It really pings among the characters and is a delight to the ear. But the show still just doesn't land with any great dramatic oomph for me.

But Sorkin is trying to shake things up as witnessed by tonight's events.Interesting to see if they bring in different regulars or just up the guest star quotient.

And I'm curious where NBC is going to move this at midseason, too. No way they'll leave it here squandering its big HEROES lead-in rating.
