Title: TENDER LOVING CARE
Post by: bk on November 27, 2006, 12:18:17 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were written with tender loving care (TLC, in Internet lingo) and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're singing And I Am Telling You I Am Not Going right now.

Most watched DVD - "The Milagro Beanfield War"

Most interesting "extras" - The Sherman Brothers etc for Mary Poppins.

Commentary: I never found one interesting.

I liked the cut scenes from "Gosford Park". I understood the reasons for the cuts but found the scenes added to the plot and character development.

Most Watched DVD....princess bride and peter pan (can you tell I love fantasy)

my favorite commentary would have to be The Mummy. I also loved Finding Neverland's commentary track. The original Willy Wonka has a fun commentary with all the original wonka children reunited, very interesting.

Ill be sure to send all my love and care these next weeks Bruce (along with doing my job perfectly)!

Good morning, all!  I have about 10 hours with The Brain today before I head downtown for more Toyland edits.  On my way to 14th Street I shall stop at Fed Ex and send the synth parts, along with the final two Piano/Conductor numbers and a complete P/C score, to the MD of The Brain.

This will be basic existence for the next three days, then I shall clean the apartment, do the laundry, pack,  and get ot of Dodge for the wilds of Los Angeles.  During those 10 days, I will be without a computer, so I will rely on my Dear Friend BK for any various and sundry updates I may need to know.

TOD:  I can't say that I watch a great number of DVDs over and over, but the last DVD discussion I enjoyed and laughed out loud over was the commentary by the director and star of Kevin Spirtas' cabaret show.

I am working on a script for a February Fundraiser that will please many committees.  I feel like Howard Roark.

So nice to hear MR BK's thoughts on DREAMGIRLS.  Glad to hear the positive and sad to hear what they have done with "performance" and "book" numbers.....always a PROBLEM with me as well....

Most Watched:
Sordid Lives and Casablanca. Can't tell you why about Sordid Lives but it is an enjoyable comedy.

Favorite Extras.
All Six parts of The Lord of the Ring Trilogy. Definitly not a puff piece.

Commentary
Not something I listen to all the time but.....

Best Overall Informative Commentary:
The four different audio tracks for f The Lord of the Ring Trilogy. (I have not listen to any of them completly)

The Most Fun:
First Nudie Musical & Sordid Lives

I am sure they might be others but this is what comes to mind right away.

And the word of the day is: MYRMIDON!
MYRMIDON sounds like that over-the-counter medication taken by women during "that certain time of the month."  Bill Cosby, early in his career, recorded a very funny routine about his taking MYRMIDON.

I am not just saying this because of the site I am posting on - I would say this on any site.  The DVD I've watched more than any other is THE FIRST NUDIE MUSICAL.  I am constantly introducing the film to people who haven't seen it.

How can you do DREAMGIRLS without the moving light towers?  You need them to take your mind of the screaching vocals - especially "And I Am Telling You I Am Not Screaming".

I've got an interesting week. I hope the weather is decent on Wednesday and Thursday - it'll be cold, that's ok, just no precip, please. I have to go to Des Moines to a seminar. While I'm there I'm going to take my nephew, Adam, and his wife who just announced she is pregnant, to dinner.   It's a 3 1/2 hour drive, so I'm really hoping the weather cooperates.

Good morning, all! Cillaz, you're feeling better than I am after the hard labor. you must ben younger than I am! LOL!

TOD: I haven't listened to very many commentaries, and haven't gotten to do TFNM yet...I'm waiting to watch it with my DH. But one that comes to mind that I enjoyed was Anthony Mighella's track on "Truly, Madly, Deeply", a film I truly love. Listening to him talk about his struggles making the film due to working with such a low budget was something I could really identify with and it's interesting to see how far he has come, budget-wise. This is a great sleeper movie!

DR Edi -
I didn't do much hard labor yesterday, so that's probably why I feel better today.

I would say Truly Madly Deeply is probably one of the films I have watched the most - both on VHS and later on DVD.  I also adore that film.  The other is Field of Dreams.  I don't know quite what it is about it, but I absolutely love that movie.

Edisaurus - I hope you don't think this means I'm stalking you, but I had  a dream last night where I had to check on some theater tickets that were supposed to be exchanged, and the name of the establishment whose door I kept encountering while trying to find an open entrance was EDAURUS.  Not quite Edisaurus, but it made me think of your screen name.

One of the best commentary tracks that I've enjoyed is on the OCDVD of Sunday in the Park with George.  Most of the insights are from Sondheim and Lapine, with Patinkin coaxing them to divulge.  Peters, sadly, doesn't contribute much.

I don't regret the loss of recitative at all. I just don't think it works in films. Among the many problems with PHANTOM OF THE OPERA on film, I found that the most glaring. The thing I loved about the movie of RENT was that they ditched most of it, and it played so much better for me than the stage version.

I had no idea Jennifer Hudson could act, but the singing is a no brainer for those of us who were horrified when she exited in the #6 slot the year she participated in IDOL. Most had expected there would be a three diva showdown in the finals, and that never happened.

Besides the BK-produced work, on which the commentaries are always excellent, I'd say my favorite commentary track from an entertainment perspective was on the movie THE OPPOSITE OF SEX.  Also, the deleted scenes on that one were very valuable educationally.

I think THE WIZARD OF OZ is the DVD I've most watched (though I've had two versions of it on DVD).

There aren't any DVD commentaries I've listened to repeatedly, but the WIZARD OF OZ commentary by John Fricke on THE ULTIMATE OZ laserdisc is by far the best commentary I've ever listened to, and I have listened to it at least a half dozen times, possibly more. His revised version on the newest OZ DVD, amended by contributions of other participants, is not a patch on what he did for the special laserdisc.

Cheating a bit on the TOD, my most watched this past weekend was Flower Drum Song, which brings me to my TOD:  2 FDS questions that I'm sure someone here can answer.

1.  Was Pat Suzuki ever considered for the film version?  If so, why wasn't she cast?  If not, why not?

2.  Why did France Nuyen leave the film of Suzi Wong?  BK's close personal friend Nick Redman dances around it in the commentary but never states the reason.

DR Cillaliz, can i assume the team you no longer like is the Beauty Queens?

I was happy that this was a non-elim (sort of expecting it). But i was disappointed with all of the mistakes that dustin and kandace made.  But i was glad they didn't get eliminated. They have proven themselves throughout the other episodes.

The team i don't get is the Mamas. I really dislike them more and more each show. They are mean.  I know the blondes are super competitive.  But the Mamas are hypocrites.  The blondes had two choices. Either yield the moms or yield nobody.  But being the competitors that they are the blondes tried to give themselves an advantage. I don't fault them for that.  But for the moms to say that they were mean about it or that karma should get them, i just don't get that. The moms had said they were planning to yield the blondes!

It was a bit unfair that the unfit Mamas arrived at the yield first, yet ended up getting yielded. But they are really out of shape. And i fear this will hurt them.  IT hurt them a lot in last night's show (they would have finished first overall).

The funniest line of the night to me was one of the moms commenting on rob and his car problems, "if your car is always breaking down, then maybe it's not the car but you". :)

I am growing to not dislike rob/kimberly as much as i did. They are pretty strong competitors.  And i do like the models. They are strong (and i appreciated them stopping to chat with rob/kimberly when their car broke down).

I will say i was impressed that the Mamas got the map, and that they got to some tasks first. I didn't think they would.  But i still can't get over their negative energy.  It is really starting to bug me.

Can't wait for next week. I"m hoping the moms go next.

TOD - The movie I've probably watched over and over again more than any other is The Big Chill.  It was one of the first ones I bought on videotape and now I own the 15th anniversary collector's edition DVD.  Love the University of Michigan references, the soundtrack, and the retrospective documentary.

Other DVD's on which I enjoy the special features are the Lord of the Rings trilogy (more than the movies themselves there) and  Frida (especially the "Real Locations of Frida's Life & Art" and the Julie Taymor pieces.  I agree with DR Elmore that the commentary on Kevin's DVD is a lot of fun.  Another director's commentary I liked a lot was on The Harvey Girls.

DR JMK - my first guess on one of your DRUM questions is that France Nuyen is an actress and someone else is NOT.

As to the first question....I don't know.  BUT I have read before that Pat Suzuki was unprepared for the pressures of Broadway and had a difficult time dealing with the being "Linda Low" - and walked away from the business for awhile.  I loved seeing her on the DVD....but there was not ENOUGH of her!

Most-watched DVD....hmmmmmmmmmmmmm....the jury's gonna have to deliberate.

However, most-watched "scenes" on a DVD would go hands down to "This Heat of Mine" and "Limehouse Blues" from "Ziegfeld Follies."

I'm up, I'm up.  The men in trees are back and being very loud.  I woke up at three-thirty, really nauseous and very concerned I had some kind of food poisoning.  I took two Tums and went back to bed and thankfully fell asleep before the nausea could overtake me.  I feel better now.  It rained during the night and it looks like it may do so at any minute, so I may go try to jog right now, although maybe I shouldn't in case my stomach isn't quite perfect yet.

I've met Pat Suzuki and she's a lovely, funny lady.  I'm not sure I would call her beautiful on a wide screen.

Hmmm....most watched DVD...the only one that I can think of that I have watched more then once is my ATTACK OF THE PUPPET PEOPLE dvd. I have some DVDs that I would like to watch again...but with the huge amount of unwatched DVDs that I have...well, I suppose I had best watch some of those first.

As for extras one of the funniest, I must say, is on the FIRST NUDIE MUSICAL...the commentary for the interviews is hilarious. I have not yet watched/listened to the commentary for the movie.

The DVD for GODZILLA VS THE THING has a wonderful commentary that was quite informative, and it had a nifty extra documentary on "monster suit" acting.

The extra on GOLDILOCKS AND THE 3 BARES was quite good also.

It snowed here in Washington!  I just got a call from my supervisor saying that our building is open today, but he's not coming in to work.  He lives in Montesano, which is about 45 miles away and there are places where the roads are pretty bad.  I now live less than a mile away from work, and will have absolutely no trouble getting there. :)

And thus begins a cycle in which George will always be expected to be at the office when everyone else cannot get there!

I guess it wasn't one of my favorite episodes.  I like gabby helping those girls. But not too interested in her going after one of the fathers.

I really dislike susan's new guy. Never liked him. But his ultimatum made me like him even less.

Glad edie dumped mike (really did not like them together).

Bree (marcia cross) is starting to show.  I guess we'll be getting lots of head and arm shots (vs full body).

My favorite scene of the night was probably susan snooping. Funny.

I'm okay with bree taking orson back (sort of like them together even though he's nuts). Liked his secret. Liked his mom's secret (well you just knew someone was gonna be in that car).

I thought the stuff with lynnette was a bit much. I mean what were those picketers hoping to accomplish? Just getting new neighbor out of their area doesn't really fix the problem.

I thought it was sort of much that his sister died just from the picketing.  And i thought that new neighbor's admission was a bit over the top (would a criminal really admist such things).

I'm wondering if this storyline will be dropped just like it seems the nora stuff and kayla living with them stuff has disappeared.

Marketing idea:

repackage this

Do TV commercials with actor pointing at head, pulling trigger while shouting "LICE BEGONE"

Were the beauty queens getting too confident?

Are the Bamas dour demeanors getting to anyone else?

Did the Bamas go too overboard on their hypocritical tirade after being yielded?

Does rob have the worst car luck ever?

Were the blondes mean to have yielded the lyns?

Is kimberly gonna lose it next week?

Have the moms improved enough to make them deserving of a F3?

Why didn't rob/kim or tyler/james yield the blondes?  The game is for $1million dollars (wouldn't you have yielded someone???).

And finally who is gonna be F3. And who is gonna win?  And who is everyone rooting for?

I am still rooting for the blondes, followed by the models.  But somehow i think the models will win (especially if it comes to a footrace to the finish).

Does anyone here really like the lyns/moms?

At least no one steals it, as they do mine. We like to capture paper thieves on our hidden camera. When we used to get both the Atlanta and Marietta papers, we have a shot of a thief who picked up the MDJ paper, walked halfway down the block, threw the paper in the yard and then took the other. So not only did he steal my paper but littered my yard with discarded papers and plastic bags.

I thought it could be a good ad for the Atlanta paper.

TAR comments from last night's show.

That's my question, DR JENNIFER....WHY didn't Rob/Kim or Tyler/James yield the blondes?  Their inaction set up the Bama Mamas to get the yield.

I would have liked to see who the blondes would have yielded if they had the choice of everyone. Would they yield the best (models) or the worst (moms)?

I am not sure why rob/kim or tyler/james did not use the yield. They implied they wanted to see the blondes go down.

My best guess would be that either a)they did not want to seem like the bad guys, so they preferred to let the blondes do the dirty work, or b) they wanted to continue using the blondes to help them.

Actually some teams just don't believe in it (the yield).  They want to be completely fair and let everyone have a chance. but heck for a million dollars i think they should have used it.

Quote

I was pretty sure that last night was going to be a non-elim. There are 2 show left. Probably an elimination next week and then the finale.

It's funny you say you dislike the beauty queens. They are my favorites. They are so competitve. Yet they always prefer to work on their own. ANd they normally do so well.  I love their enthusiasm and how they are not mean about things.  When they yielded the moms they didn't do it to hurt them, but because they want to win.

I think a lot of people are like you. Well maybe not for the moms. I don't think too many like them. But many people like the kindest.

TAR SPOILERS***************************************

LOL - that's more like it. It's much more fun to disagree with you.....nothing personal - really, but if we all agree...how boring  ;D  I think the blondes are totally negative now and I really don't like them.  I like the Bama girls more each week. I don't see them as having negative energy and they are still here.  That takes some good playing just to stay in to the final 4.

I am also getting to like Kimberly and Rob more, but they don't yell like they used to. Nobody in the game likes the blondes anymore, so if they need help, I have a feeling it isn't going to happen. I wanted the blondes to win until last night, now I'm not sure.

Question for Edisaurus:

Did you have any hand in the increasingly annoying "Brenda peek-a-boos" that clutter my TNT screen. (Not near as bad as the TBS promos for My Boys which are a reason NOT to tune in.)

On a kinder note: the season promos that combined The Closer, Law and Order, Without a Trace and Saved were great. And I particularly liked the trailer for the next Closer - no plot giveaways and neat visuals on why we watch the show - the characters! (I like the shots of Brenda eating the donut and running into Fritz's arms as bookends)

An a thumbs up to whomever is responsible for the Trailer for the new Librarian sequel.

I am cheering for anyone but the blondes.  I really have a new respect for the bama moms and would actually love to see them win. I don't think they have shown enough footage of them doing things like buying the map and studying it in the past. They are much smarter than they are given credit for.  Last night one of the addicts even said that the Bama moms always get places so quickly...

Early on, like the first episode or the first non-elimination episode, they announced that there were 2 non-elimination episodes, Kentucky got both of them, so they had to have added one.   Makes me wonder....

I started with an episode of the ALI G SHOW recorded from HBO last week.

After the tremendous success of BORAT at the movies, HBO has started showing ALI G again (there are only about 12 episodes over the two seasons).

They're funny, but the formula is too repetitive for me show after show especially as all three of Cohen's personas (Ali G, Borat, and Bruno) suffer from the same kind of idiocy, so dressing up in different outfits and affecting a different accent doesn't change the comedy motif.

As I said, it's funny, but two or three episodes of the series is enough for me.

Then, I watched last night's DEXTER, a tense episode where Dexter discovers his real-life father. And as the episode wore on and we found out that all was not what it seemed concerning his death, the show got even edgier. We're building to the climax of the series, and now that we know most everything about identities, the tension is unbelievably high.

TAR spoilers (although it would appear that we have all seen last nights episodes! LOL!)

I am kind of rooting for the Bama's. They have been playing quite well, particularly withough the rest of the 6 pack. The one gal has a very negative attitude and is not particularly nice, but her co-hort seems nice enough and has even told her off a couple of times.

The models would be my second choice.

The beauty Queens and the arguing couple are tied for last place, in my book.

My Yahoo home page turns up the news item that Pam Anderson is divorcing Kid Rock.

Why.....would.....they.....think....I.....--....or anyone with a brain...---...care?

And all this hullabaloo about Michael Richards' racist blowup at a comedy club.

Michael Richards was not a blip on anyone's radar BEFORE he played Kramer on "Seinfeld."

And he hasn't been more than a blip on anyone's radar SINCE he played Kramer on "Seinfeld."

WHY DOES ANYONE CARE ABOUT MICHAEL RICHARDS?

Much less that he had a bad night and had a meltdown?

>Did you have any hand in the increasingly annoying "Brenda peek-a-boos" that clutter my TNT screen.

No...that's a whole diffferent department. They don't bother me as much as the ones for "Monk", and it's pretty funny that she's muching a donut as she ducks under the crime scene tape.

>(Not near as bad as the TBS promos for My Boys which are a reason NOT to tune in.)

Oh, are they bad? They were testing so poorly that they gave them to all of us to work on and had about 25-30 different spots. It's a hard show to sell, which is too bad, because I think it's pretty good. (They didn't go with the spot I cut... and I haven't seen the others.

You wouldn't believe the amount of negative comments on our first batch of Closer promos last year. They were run into the ground and people swore they would never watch the show. I only had the pilot to work from and her character was very annoying. As the show progressed, they toned down cetain aspects and were able to develop the supporting characters. Hopefully My Boys will have similar success down the road.

>And I particularly liked the trailer for the next Closer - no plot giveaways and neat visuals on why we watch the show - the characters! (I like the shots of Brenda eating the donut and running into Fritz's arms as bookends)

Thanks! The new shows are very interesting and quite a departure from the previous episodes. I try not to give anything away, and sometimes deliberately mislead just for fun. I should find out today how our numbers were for the season 1 marathon.

>An a thumbs up to whomever is responsible for the Trailer for the new Librarian sequel.

It's Deja Thoris Vu all over again!

Starbucks sued over hot chocolate incident (http://www.slashfood.com/2006/11/19/starbucks-sued-over-hot-chocolate-incident)
Quote
An Indianapolis couple, Michael and Alexis Brennan, is suing Starbucks, claiming that they served their daughter a cup of hot chocolate, which subsequently spilled and left her with serious burns. The daughter, whose age was not given, but was young enough to fit in a car seat, was said to have been riding strapped into that car seat in the back of the car when she spilled the drink. The mother stopped the car and got out to discover that the "skin on [her] leg was falling off of her."

A high percentage of parents test the temperature of their kids' drinks by taking a sip themselves, but Ms. Brennan only subjected the drink to a visual inspection before handing it to her daughter. A small child holding a drink of any kind in the backseat of a moving car, especially if he or she is small enough to have to be confined to a car seat, sounds like a recipe for disaster, regardless of whether the drink is hot or not. The parents are, of course, seeking (unspecified) damages.

Actually, in this case, it seems the villain is a fascist in charge:

Quote
The subdivision's rules say no signs, billboards or advertising are permitted without the consent of the architectural control committee.

Kearns ordered the committee to require Jensen to remove the wreath, but members refused after concluding that it was merely a seasonal symbol that didn't say anything.

Kearns fired all five committee members.

A. The Closer pop-ins can be cute; however...timing is everything. In the marathon episode where Just Plain Brenda has Just Plain Bill face down on her stoop and is closing in for a dramatic face-to-face - up jumps the pop-up and turns the scene into a cartoon!

B. My objections to the TBS spots was not content, but the execution. I am referring to the graphic flyins that covered nearly 25% of the screen (bottom left) during a Closer episode.

I do find them intrusive usually but have learned to live with them. They're not going away.

BTW, that is my all-time absolute favorite episode of THE CLOSER from either season (thus far). Not only do I LOVE her interaction with Jason O'Mara (Bill), but her support of Lt. Flynn in a moment when she could have had him crucified and gloated to his face is my favorite segment in the show.

STUDIO 60 had an entertaining hour tonight, too, as the plot jumped back and forth in time covering a week where many in the cast were coming down with flu, a new writing staff tried to get one sketch written that was worthy of putting on the air. and HArriet tried learning to tell a joke. And just so that it's preserved for posterity...at least until the photos are purged.  Here's the evidence (I saved it sideways so that we don't go into Cinerama):

ONE!! (This is my Post # 9999!!)

Clay Aiken, Lance Bass, Neil Patrick Harris, T.R. Knight...me. ;)
And I've really only heard of the last! (Me being you).

I doubt the other names are known internationally whereas yours is DR George!

Back from a long day and shall now endeavor to write the notes quickly.

I need people to tell me if they've made their own reservations for The Brain.  There is much confusion because the box office lady up and left to deal with an emergency, and when I saw the list of reservations today it certainly did not include MusicGuy and Kerry, Laura, MBarnum or anyone else except Michael Shayne.  So, let me know if you made reservations because I'll have to have them tracked down or we'll have to redo them.

"How I Met Your Mother" was pretty funny tonight!  I loved Wayne Brady as Barney's brother and did everyone recognize Megan Mullally as their mother? ;D
