Title: BK - SMOKE DETECTOR
Post by: bk on November 29, 2006, 01:18:59 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had both smoke and a detector, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they've been smoking and they've now been detected by our very own BK - Smoke Detector, which will be a Fox TV series next season.

Because he believed that dancing in three-quarter time
Was SALUBRIOUS and would lead to a long and prosperous life.

I thoroughly dislike the smoke detector in our house.  It is far too sensitive.  It will go off if I'm boiling water!  Bleh.

I went to Tower yesterday. The going out of business sale has been on for quite a while but it's the first time I was able to get there. Well, it's pretty slim pickins'. I did manage to get a copy of Manhattan Transfer Live, the first live album, recorded at the Hammersmith in London in 1978. I had it on cassette and transferred it to CD but since it was on sale for $9 I went for it. I also got a copy of the DRG release of An Evening with Frank Loesser on sale for $6. After that there was nothing in the entire store that interested me. The Show Tunes were pretty much gone. There were some soundtracks but real bottom of the barrel choices and vocals were practically non-existent. Oh, well. I got two CDs. Can't ask for much more.

Morning all. Trying to decide if I'm going to call my boss and tell him I'm not driving today but will wait until 5:00AM and see what the weather is like then.   We may have snow, which is no big deal, but closer to Des  Moines they are talking freezing rain and sleet.   I just don't want to drive in that.  I've pretty much made up my mind. I haven't even packed anything.....better go to work and make the phone call.

Morning Ginny!

Well, I have heaved a sigh of relief.  I called my boss in Des Moines and he said it's fine if I wait until tomorrow.  It makes for a very long day tomorrow - driving to Des Moines and back and sitting through the seminar, but I have had the feeling for 2 days that I shouldn't go today and I just can't ignore that.   I kind of feel like I dodged a bullet.

ASK BK:

If you ever read MAD magzine what was your favorite piece that they wrote?

I think I mention MAD in the first Kritzer book, but yes, I was a huge MAD fan and was buying it when it was comic-book-sized.  Of those issues (the first twenty-three), I liked Superduperman and the Howdy Doozit parodies best.  When it went to magazine size, my favorite was the West Side Story parody, East Side Story, which was brilliant.  For a time, I had a complete run of the first 150 issues, beautifully bound, but there one of the things I had to get rid of during the bad time a few years ago.  I now have fifteen of the first twenty-three thanks to Grant Geissman.  Mr. Geissman is a huge MAD fan-atic and has a major collection of their original art, plus he's written several books on the subject.

Dear esteemed smoke detector BK -

Do you have any plans for post-Brain?  Or can you even imagine ahead that far?

I'll have a couple of weeks off after The Brain, then I go into rehearsal for the kids show, as well as begin to put together the one-person shows for Joan Ryan and Alet Taylor.  So, plenty o' stuff.  As well as begin a new book and finish the little play I'm working on.

My question for ASK BK day...

What part in THE BRAIN FROM PLANET X would you like to play?

The most fun part for a man in The Brain is the alien - but I wouldn't be as good as the fellow who's doing it.  If I wasn't claustrophobic, it would be grand fun to play the title character.

My guess is also that you got "behind" where the battery is, BK.  I've never known a smoke detector that you need to unscrew.  What you unscrewed was the whole sensor which is screwed onto the plate that attaches to the ceiling.  You should have just popped off the cover and there your battery will be.  That said, I know our smoke detectors take some major "elbow grease" to pop off the covers--sometimes you have to squeeze them like those child-proof aspirin bottle lids.
Title: Re:BK - SMOKE DETECTOR
Post by: bk on November 29, 2006, 07:36:02 AM
You won't believe it.  At six-thirty this morning I was awakened by that incessant sporadic beeping again.  After what I did to what I thought was the hallway smoke detector I didn't think I'd ever hear beeping again.  But maybe whatever I dismantled and put back together in the hallway wasn't a smoke detector because I couldn't find a battery anyway.  This time I isolated the beeping to the smoke detector in the bedroom - that one wasn't too difficult in terms of locating the battery.  Unfortunately, I didn't have a fershluganah nine volt battery in the house, so off I went to the twenty-four hour market.  I put that in (it's weird how it fits in there - you just sort of lay it in and close the slot and somehow it's connected, so the beeping has stopped.  Now, just what did I take apart in the hallway that had no battery?
Title: Re:BK - SMOKE DETECTOR
Post by: bk on November 29, 2006, 07:37:02 AM
And why did the beeping stop last night, stay stopped all night, and then resume at six-thirty in the morning?

In any case, I have now had two nights in a row of four hours of sleep and I look like crap and I am not happy.  I shall try to go back to bed shortly.
Title: Re:BK - SMOKE DETECTOR
Post by: JMK on November 29, 2006, 07:41:44 AM
Smoke detector batteries are notorious for beeping for a while, then somehow miraculously "recharging," then starting the fershluggunah beeping again.  It happens here all the time.

Maybe what you dismantled last night is the secret surveillance unit the owners of the home had installed.  Did you know that your every move was being broadcast to a worldwide audience in the tens of millions?  Well, at least it was--until last night.   ;D

Good morning!

It's overcast, but the sun is trying mightily to break through the clouds, and at the moment, it's succeeding.

It is VERY warm here. Another day in the 70s. My heat (which I have set at 60 during the night) didn't come on this morning, and I was too warm in the bed. Very atypical for November!

We watched another of these pretty lamentable WB tv movies based on Christie books last night--this one a Helen Hayes Miss Marple.  Hayes catches the essence of the character, but her accent, such as it is, is pretty spotty, and some of the supporting performances were just LOL bad.  Plus the "Moishe the explainer" section in this one explained virtually nothing--it was like they had forgotten to film it and did it quickly in one very fast take (it lasted about 90 seconds).  Virtually none of the red herrings were explained.  Oh, well, I got the boxed set free, so I guess I shouldn't complain.

I agree completely with you, bk, about "East Side Story," forever my favorite MAD parody of all-time. After I misplaced my copy of the magazine that contained it, I bought every one of those MAD paperback compilations until I got it again.

I also thought the parody of HUSH HUSH SWEET CHARLOTTE (entitled "Hack Hack Sweet Has Been") was brilliant.

When the smoke detector goes off, sometimes from ordinary cooking, Toby's ears seem to hurt from the noise until it stops.  (They say dogs' hearing is much keener than ours.)  If it went off while we were gone for a few hours and not here to stop the noise, I wonder what it would do to poor Toby.  We don't think it's happened yet, though.

Was it A CARIBBEAN MYSTERY or MURDER WITH MIRRORS? I agree with you. They are not a patch on the BBC versions with Joan Hickson (her CARIBBEAN MYSTERY is my second favorite of all the Hickson/Marples). Still, I find them oddly entertaining. I was quick to buy that boxed set of CHristie mysteries despite their (mostly) second rate casts, absurdly updated storylines, and mundane direction.

[sigh] I have five and a half hours of shows from last night to watch today. The finale to the first of three mini-mystery arcs on VERONICA MARS has gotten rave reviews from critics I've read, so I'll start with that.

Of course, by skipping commercials, it won't that me that long to watch all of these programs.

A couple of weeks ago I was cooking and the kitchen got smokey. DS's cat, Sassy, was very upset and meowed and meowed and paced around. She found DS and insisted he follow her. She led him outside where he was safe. She didn't care one whit about the rest of us.

I saw that yesterday at Playbill, and I thought how desperate the producers of the show are to resort to such obvious miscasting just to get a name actor in the part. I suspect it won't help its sliding box-office and the show will be gone soon after he takes over.

It's currently F 41!!!  High may reach F 55.

Truly C-O-L-D....for Oakland.

I didn't do much of anything last night (either).  I was so contented sitting by my fire that working up any enthusiasm to watch a DVD was out of the question.

As it happens, I did watch "Friday Night Lights"...and despite the fact that I find Kyle Chandler a very interesting actor (and he has the Texas patois down cold), and despite the fact that the show captures with gritty realism the all-football mentality that besieges the majority of small town residents, I truly don't give a rat's patootie.

Nothing happened in the show at all.  Some character development...some emotional outbursts...some stereotyping of a black player with a drug problem (that's my opinion, the stereotyping bit)...all of it just FILLER to get us to next week's "game" show, I suppose.

YAWN.

My cousin said that she fixed her DH a bowl of popcorn and a coke and he was settled in his recliner watching TV when she went to bed. Hmmm, wonder if this (http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20061129/hl_nm/life_work_sick_dc) could be part of the problem here at work...

One thing that always occurs to me when I read such stories is that since it IS a heavy shopping season, store employees come into contact with many more people and are far busier than normal.   This means the employees are more likely to be more tired/run down during this season than any other.

Add to that the fact that it is now "flu season" and the likelihood of employees becoming sick more frequently is exponentially greater during this shopping season.

Every time I read a story about this it always casts suspicion upon employees....never the more obvious/more likely reason for higher sick day occurrences.

On the other hand, I sympathize with the employers and other employees left "holding the bag" when someone calls in sick.

Yes, it's hard enough doing your job during this season without having to do someone else's, too.  That often leads to resentment toward the absent employee.

And, yes, I agree that there are instances of goldbricking (i.e., calling in sick when you aren't sick at all).

But still...

Don't get me started on THIS subject, DRRLP.  One of the things that annoyed me most was the extra work I as a SINGLE person ended up with when there was "something at school" or there was a "daycare" emergency or one of the kids was sick....  My guess is that was so about 50% of the time.  :P

I had it on cassette and transferred it to CD but since it was on sale for $9 I went for it....

Ben, let me know what you think of the sound quality.  I got that CD also and it seems to have some audio problems that I don't think could be on the original recording.  Something must have happened when they made the CD.  An Internet buddy of mine sent me a copy of the Japanese-only CD release (from several years ago) and it sounds so much better than this US release.

....But maybe whatever I dismantled and put back together in the hallway wasn't a smoke detector because I couldn't find a battery anyway....

....Now, just what did I take apart in the hallway that had no battery?

That kind of sounds like what my sister had in her house (that she just sold).  We couldn't figure out what it was, so she just disconnected it, took it down, put a cover over it and called it good.  We bought some battery-powered smoke detectors from Costco and put them up in the three bedrooms and another in the hall/living room area, but we never could figure out what that other thing was. :-\

I could curry some yams, or fix some hot spiced yams.

I could bake some yams and do 'em up like a dessert.

I could fry some yams and eat 'em with mayonnaise (they don't taste as good with French onion dip).

Hmmm, wonder if this (http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20061129/hl_nm/life_work_sick_dc) could be part of the problem here at work...

Since I'm self-employed, i don't have any paid sick days, so I usually end up getting sick over the holidays when my body says: "OK...NOW can I get sick?" Plus I'm usually run down trying to get ready for the holidays and then hugging and kissing a lot of people at parties and family gatherings so I'm an easy target.

Something I swear by that keeps me healthy is not a drug, but a compound made from mushrooms called "Immunity".

http://snipurl.com/immunity

It has helped both of us so much that we signed up as dealers so we could buy it wholesale for ourselves and family members. Now we get sick maybe once a year but recover in a day or two. I recommend it for anyone who has school-age children or any job where they come into contact with a lot of people. The only drawback is that it has no hallucenogenic properties...

DR RLP - My parents and sister lived in the Bay Area before they moved to Portland, OR, where I was born.  The whole time I was growing up I heard stories about places my mother loved in San Francisco.  Gump's was one of them, City of Paris another, and Podesta Baldocchi.  When I finally had my first trip to SF, at age 24, I took a day and visited all the places I'd heard Mother talk about.

On the other side of the "sick leave" discussion, we have an incentive program here that rewards employees periodically for not using any sick hours.  I think it encourages people to come to work and spread germs when they should be at home.

What I have started to resent is that people with kids call in to stay home with a sick kid, leave early to go to this or that, to take their kids here and there.  It really gets old when you're trying to get some work done.  In fact it may necessitate a mental health day or a mental health afternoon from time to time

Yes, the guidance from my employer is that despite the fact that we earn 13 sick days per year, we are NOT expected to take them.

The party line is that if you feel sick upon waking up, get up anyway, get dressed and come on in.  You'll feel better than you thought once you get to work.

Everyone else pays the price when someone does this...viruses run through our agency lickety-split, all because someone didn't want to risk being criticized for taking a sick day.  The result is that many more sick days are lost because of all the contaminated employees staying home.

Now you're ranting my rant.  Yes, "parents" can absent themselves at the drop of a hat.  Kid sick at school?  Bye-bye.

Kid sick at home?  Not coming in.  And the County even has a special code for the parent to use when accounting for the missed day.  The parent gets paid but doesn't lose any personal leave or sick leave.  It's a special cache of leave for "parents."

I don't begrudge parents this perk.  I begrudge the employer for not offering something in kind to non-parents.

But then, as a single man, I've been railing at "the system" for decades.  My primary beef when I was on active duty in the Navy, and assigned stateside or in Europe, my allowance for quarters (a special allowance for renting/maintaining a residence) was half that of a married man/woman.  Yet...the married military person gets credit only for one dependent...whether he has just a wife or a wife and 20 kids, his allowance is the same -- TWICE mine, even though he and his wife can live in a one-bedroom as easily as I can.

In fact, single-bedroom units in many cities during the 80s and 90s were only available in more modern complexes...and were, ultimately, more expensive to rent than a 2- or 3-bedroom house.

And don't get me started on being taken advantage of BECAUSE I was single.  WHO do you think worked EVERY Christmas eve and Christmas day, virtually alone for 10 hours?  Yep, me and one or two other single souls.  After all, what could we possibly have to do on Christmas which is, AFTER ALL, for the KIDS? (I had invitations to homes for dinner and supper...for Christmas Eve sleepovers....to spend time with families that made me a part of their lives...to enjoy watching their kids get up and open presents).  No...as long as there were single sailors around, all the married folks NEVER had to work a single holiday!

AND when someone's kid had a birthday or a graduation or a sporting event or a performance/recital...who got the privilege of covering/working extra hours for them?  The SINGLE sailor, that's who.  Well, they could ask Bill or Tom to do it, but their wives and kids are waiting for them at home to eat dinner.

Oh, well....

I looked out the bedroom window, and this is what I saw:

Actually, he was sitting on the ground atop a grey bundle which turned out to be one of my squirrels!

The red-tailed hawk just sat there for about fifteen minutes; I tried to sneak outside and get a picture, but the Mail Man's truck scared him away. The Mail Man said he saw the hawk with prey in hand claws winging it back into the marsh.

I wish they'd do this Circle of Life bit somewhere else!

Yes, it was the same in teaching, too. Single teachers were always expected to chaparone dances and school trips at night since we didn't have families of our own to go home to. FOr the first few years of teaching, I let them take advantage of me over and above the call of duty, but after about five years, when I had a home and a partner, I made sure it was understood that I was NOT available for any after school activities that other folks didn't have to attend.

"No" has become one of my favorite words over the past year.

People still "take advantage" of me in ways that don't necessarily bother/trouble me, but in ways that occasionally irritate me.

They just assume that, because I love to cook, I will prepare a food for some function or other...sufficient to feed 20 people or 40 people.

Usually, I don't mind at all.  But when they'd rather hand it over to me EVERY TIME rather than solicit other "volunteers", I find that "No, thanks, I'm doing something else that day!" works very well.

I started this afternoon with VERONICA MARS. My local CW affiliate for some reason did not pick up the high def version of the show, so I had to settle for the standard version they showed and had to manipulate the aspect ratio of my set so the picture wouldn't be distorted. Weird.

Anyway, the solution of the rapist mystery was quite good and had me completely fooled. I had gone in another direction entirely (the professor's assistant was my guess). And the new murder mystery set up last night was also a great way to begin the next mystery arc on the show. The victim was REALLY a surprise! I thouoght for sure it would be either the dean's wife or the professor.

I used to "decorate" our common areas in our division for the holidays.

It was always something tasteful...a touch here, a dab there.  Color, some sparkle, and every year it was different.

Last year, a newer co-worker, who had really loved what I'd done the year before, decided she wanted to do the decorating.

Fine by me.

Trouble is, when she brought everything in, she expected me to drop everything and assist her in her grand scheme.

I asked her if she remembered how much help I requested the year before.  She admitted she didn't recall me asking for help.

And that's when I told her I didn't expect to "help" her.  If she has a vision, she can put it out there.  I used to come in over a weekend to decorate.  She wanted to do it during the work day (we can finish in an hour if you help).

No.

I don't mind someone else doing it.  When I was doing the decorating, it was because nothing was being done by anyone else.  If someone else wants to do it, though, I want them to do it.

I watched 3 LBS. next. Two stories took up the hour - a woman with a brain aneurysm which could only be operated on with her body cooled and heart stopped for thirty minutes (GREY'S ANATOMY had a similar story last season dealing with the bar owner) and a man with face blindness.

The stories featured OK drama but nothing which makes this show unique or cutting edge, nothing to make it a must-see. I think this may be my last viewing of 3 LBS.

nip/tuck had an off night, too, I thought, with poor Sean drinking to get through the holidays and Christian reunited with a black child (Wilbur from a previous season before I started watching) he thought was his. I did love seeing Charles Haid as the homeless guy (he's been behind the cameras directing in recent years a lot more than he's been acting).

I just saw NBC's midseason slate necessitated by the end of Sunday night football and shifts by other networks upcoming.

THE APPRENTICE will be the Sunday 9 p.m. show on NBC followed by CROSSING JORDAN in its familiar timeslot at 10.

STUDIO 60 is going to remain on Mondays at 10, at least for now.

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS moves out of the Tuesday at 8 suicide slot opposite AMERICAN IDOL and will be on Wednesday nights at 8.

NBC is putting DATELINE on Tuesday at 8 p.m.

NBC has two hour long midseason replacement shows - THE BLACK DONNALEYS and RAINES, but they have not yet been placed on the schedule.

Okay i loved the finale of this arc. Totally satisfying.  I won't say that i was surprised at who the rapist turned out to be.  But i loved how it all turned out.

My favorite parts were 1. parker coming to the rescue. 2. ra guy giving veronica that tea (totally caught me off guard even though we had been explicitly told that he had the keys to all the rooms.  3. the murder (i was expecting the professor). 4. but my most favorite bit was logan smashing the police car and where he ended up afterwards. Totally awesome ending.

Btw, we had so many real clues throughout the previous episodes.  But how cool that veronica helped free the guy who would later attack her.

And how interesting that the not so interesting prison experiment (from the second show) played such an important part in the finale. We know moe was in the experiment last year. But was mercer in it with logan/wallace this year?

I hope the show is back next week. Not sure when the next arc starts.

Ron---good for you on learning to say "no". Greg and I have run ourselves ragged over the last 5 years or so in community activism, volunteering and serving on boards. I have realized that the people who do the most work in this regard (in our town anyway) don't have kids. Raising kids is so much harder that maybe we volunteer out of guilt that we aren't raising kids!

All of the councilpeople we've helped, all of the city activites---planting trees, being docents, monitoring streams, organizing neighborhoods to deal with their own issues, was of no help to us when we faced our own problems. No one helped us fight for our historic district, which is being destroyed by developers.

We have also helped out so many people on their films for free.

So for the first time, the past year, we have learned to say "no" because we realized that if we didn't, we would never move to the new house.

Saying "no" has been a very liberating experience for us.

We still volunteer for a few groups, including SMA and our new neighborhood group, but generally, until we move, our mantra will be:

JUST SAY NO!

Well, I'm trying out the site.   As you all know I'm out here from New York for the Brain and thoroughly enjoying.  I'm learning all about Bruce, and I'm on my second of the Kritzer books and am laughing my way through his childhood.  I love reading about the blow by blow of his daily life on this site.
He's giving me the restaurant tour of the city which I'm loving.  Of course we're touring the restaurants that are open after 10pm  since that is when rehearsal finishes.  All of them have been great.  Musso and Franks, Astro Burger,  Genghis Cohen, Prizzie's, Birds,  Kendalls.   I'm having a wonderful time and the show should be great.  I'd love to meet you in person after the show and hope you're coming.  I love reading all the postings!

...I have never seen a pomengranate in the flesh!
...
We had five (count 'em) pommegranate bushes in our back yard, when I was growing up in Burbank, CA.  Every year, those prolific bushes would give us hundreds of fruits.  And every year, I was the one who got to juice them all.  This involved cutting them open, getting all the seeds out, and running the seeds through a food mill.  Messy work, and whatever I was wearing that day was ruined, but I enjoyed it (and my sisterthebitch refused to help).  After, Mom would strain the juice through a few layers of cheesecloth to filter out all the impurities, and then she'd make pommegranate jelly!  Absolutely delicious, marvelous ruby stuff.

That's what childhood memories are made of.

VERONICA MARS.

I hope the show is back next week. Not sure when the next arc starts.

I think I read somewhere that the next new show isn't until early January, but I could be wrong about that.

I did truly love the episode and this entire first arc.

And good news! Ratings were up, too! It was VERONICA's highest ever rating last night. The CW has to be happy with this pairing of VERONICA and GILMORE GIRLS. Both face very heavy competition and are doing much better than shows with much less competition on other nights.

A flip-side to the filling-in-for-absent-workers problem:

For me, filling is is a good thing.  Since I'm a part-time worker, every time I'm asked to fill in it means that I get more hours on the job, which in turn means more on my weekly paycheck.

I started out this week with just eightteen hours scheduled.

Sunday, Kimmy really wanted to have off, so I got her shift, adding five hours.

Another two hours were added on Tuesday, due to another co-worker calling out.

Today, I was asked if I could come in for an eight-hour shift on Friday.  I said sure!

So, I'm up to thirty-three hours for the week.  And, since union rules say that I only have to have one day off per week, I could still be called in on either Thursday or Saturday for up to seven hours before I get pushed into overtime.  Sure, overtime means more pay, but we try to avoid it because it makes the regional bean-counters nervous.

Oh, one more thing about the pommegranate bushes - they have really sharp stickers!  Every year, they had to be pruned back, a job that required wearing gloves (and that is not a Gypsy Rose Lee reference).  Then all those branches had to be bundled and tied, and the night before the trash truck came they had to be hauled out to the parkway...

Those jobs were not fun.

Good news - our USPS fellow delivered, direct to our door and into der Brucer's hands, Doctor Who - The Beginning!  Three discs, containing the first three serials (An Unearthly Child, The Daleks, and The Edge of Destruction) plus a thirty-minute condensed version of the fourth story, Marco Polo.

(Marco Polo is one of the "lost" stories, due to someone at the Beeb deciding to clean out a lot of the stuff that was in storage.  Some of the lost material has been found again, on occasion as far away as Singapore, but some of the stories now exist only in script form.)

We're still waiting for a delivery from DDDVD.  Maybe tomorrow....

UPS Guy stopped by...left me a lovely Ultimate Collector's Edition of "Superman"...plus one of my two remaining DDDVD orders....the Bogie & Bacall set...and the Paul Newman box.  Funny thing....the B&B set is four DVDS in regular keepcases.  The Newman box is seven DVDs in slimline cases.  The Newman box is only as wide as three of the four B&B DVDs.

So...in essence...10 slimline DVDs will fit in the same space as four regular keepcase DVDs.

I am fully planning on taking a "mental health" sick day sometime between now and Christmas.  The holiday season is also rough in my line of work. It's only 3 days after TG weekend and I'm already burnt out!  But I think a lot of folks at my office indulge in an occasional mental health day and I know that my kids will get a better therapist in me as a result.  Or at least that's my rationalization.  ;D

At the first firm I worked for out of law school in the mid-1980's, the Human Resources people spoke openly about people needing and taking mental health days from time to time.  It wasn't being encouraged but it was basically represented that they knew the need for them was there, the firm knows you're going to take them and be considerate to your co-workers about when you take them.
