Title: IT'S THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were especially cheery, and now it is time for you to post until the cheery cows come home.  To it, I say.

Nosegay....that's a wonderful word. I haven't thought of that in many a year.

George, I'm glad they figured out the problem, but sorry you're liable.

If the water is coming from outback, wouldn't it be TomovOz's fault?

There's probably a joke to be made around BenGay and nosegay, but I'm too tired to figure out what it might be...

If only the "outback" had water to spare. Maybe that's the reason we havea serious drought - Washington has taken our supply.

My niece works in the field of "HIV research" (Social research into HIV +ve Pregnant Women).

Her second child was born this morning. Somehow it seems the perfect day. A good news day when there are so many memories of loved ones lost.

Thanks for the reminder. I still have a red ribbon from last year, given to me by David Hyde Pierce post-"Spamalot". I've lost several friends and family members. I hope this will be the year they find a cure, and also a cure for SMA.

But I won't call you an "Uncle Tom"! (Does that translate in Australia?)

Congratulations to your niece!

Well, I decided to take today off from work, even though I took yesterday off, too.  I really don't think that I'll be able to work effectively with all that's happened...AND have a good performance tonight.  So, I think I'll be able to clean up some more water throughout the day at a relaxed pace without worring about what the heck's going on (and hopefully the pipe that burst will be found and fixed, too)!  But now that solutions have been presented for the condo problems, right now I really feel that it would be a good thing for me to not to have to worry about being at work.
Title: Re:IT'S THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR
Post by: George on December 01, 2006, 12:57:31 AM
And now, I'm going to log into my work e-mail and send the appropriate messages saying that I'm not coming into work again, and then I'm going to sleep, which I desperately need.  I'm sure I'll be woken up by the wet carpet fixers calling to make an appointment, but then I can go to my sister's to take a shower...which I also deperately need.

So, good night, Edisaurus (and any and all guests).

Good morning, all!  I'm hardly awake, but I'm rarin' to get on that plane and meet The Brain!  I think there should be no flight complications this morning, so all I ask is a safe flight and all the vibes you can continue to send!

DR George, I am so sorry about the plumbing problem.  I hope this will be swiftly resolved and your schedule can get back to some semblance of normalcy.

DR edi, everything in this world is Jose's fault!

Well, in an hour I hop into the car and head to JFK.  This is my first Jet Blue flight, but our DRs MBarnum and PennyO have relied upon it for trips.  I think I will sleep on the plane, and, when I get to my host's home, finish up the loose ends I have to do for Saturday's band rehearsal.  I'll next contact you all from LA.

Cheers, dear friends!

So many POSTS yesterday....learning about everyone's ALW feelings, television, Anne Heche, DR TPUNK's allergies, and DR GEORGE's water problem.

What will today be like, I wonder?

Break a leg tonight, DR GEORGE?  Is tonight opening night?

DR MBARNUM, I thought Diana and Laurie were joining you for THE BRAIN!!

I got the German westerns.  They are very enjoyable!  APACHES - except for the music score - was very good.  I think my favorite is THE GREAT SNAKE, but they are all fun!

It was rainy this morning when I got up, but WARM! It is 70 outside right now, and when I read about those poor folks suffering under the snow, ice, and cold, I find it amazing it is so balmy here. We've been breaking records almost every day with this weather.

I cannot believe it is December! How fast this year has passed, and I haven't done a single show, so that can't account for the quick passage of time. Seems like yesterday I was doing my taxes on the computer for the first time, and that was back in March! Seems like a couple of weekends ago.

DR TOMOVOZ,
I rented HUSTLE from Netflix just recently and LOVED it. Very smart, I thought, very fun. I love a good con. Great writing, fine acting. I'm now watching MI-5, the previous series from the same production company. Not usually my sort of thing, but it's also quite impressive. You might want to give it a try, too.

What are your other favorites? (I know you like Poliakoff.)

A headless skeleton lies in a Roman limestone tomb discovered below the grounds of St. Martin-in-the-Fields church in London.

Quote
LONDON (Dec. 1) - Archaeologists discovered a rare Roman limestone sarcophagus containing a headless skeleton at the site of a historic London church, authorities said Friday.
The find dates to about 410 A.D. and lay 10 feet below the grounds of the St. Martin-in-the-Fields church near central London's busy Trafalgar Square, outside the boundaries researchers had established for London's Roman city walls.
'''
The sarcophagus was made from a single piece of limestone from Oxfordshire or Northamptonshire, about 60 miles northwest of London, researchers said. The skeleton, headless and missing fingers, is a 5-foot-6-inch male who died in his 40s. Researchers speculated that Victorian workmen building a sewer stumbled upon the sarcophagus and took the head.

Somebody check Pogue's baggage!

Hello all.  It's a beautiful day today, but I fear I am catching a cold.  Yesterday about halfway through the seminar a man sat next to me who was coughing, hacking and blowing his nose the whole time.  So, I'm beginning to feel the effects. BK - I was about to respond to that fellow on that other board's West Coast board, but thought better of it.  New World Stages is a theater that has had a large number of relatively low-budget musicals, and for some reason (despite the fact that it's had some solidly-attended-or-gone-on-to-have-a-real-life shows like Altar Boyz, Musical of Musicals, Drumstruck, and now Evil Dead) has an unfair reputation for being a revolving door.  But in reality, their hit-to-non-hit ratio is actually as good or better than off-Bway in general.

Or maybe that guy was just observing that your show is in the Evil Dead genre.  I know that when Starfighter was first announced, we were lumped in people's minds with Evil Dead as well.  Given what's happened with Evil Dead, that might not be a bad thing overall.

I spent a large portion of the afternoon reliving my childhood watching SUPERMAN episodes. Among my favorites were "The Last Knight" about a secret society who celebrate knighthood, "The Magic Secret" about a criminal scientist who has figured out a way to draw kryptonite from the air, and "The Mysterious Cube" featuring a cube made of a substance even Superman can't break through or see through.

Unfortunately, it also included one of the all-time worst episodes - "The Atomic Captive" which features probably the worst performances in the history of the show. None of the guest cast can really act at all, and their inability to deliver even simple lines is PAINFUL.

Next, I watched another CSI: MIAMI episode from the fourth season. This one dealt with a woman found dead at the scene of a traffic accident only to be found to have been killed in the car after the accident. Three suspects don't make for much mystery as the guilty party is pretty obvious.

However, the on-going "mole in the lab" scenario which ran the gamut of the season is also present, and the clues are so obvious in retrospect. At the time, I still had no idea who the mole was.

I ended the afternoon watching the roadshow version of SOUTH PACIFIC with Richard Barrios' commentary turned on. So far, he hasn't offered much information that wasn't already common knowledge, but thirty minutes in, he's only now beginning to comment on Josh Logan's leaden direction.

DR TOMOVOZ,
I rented HUSTLE from Netflix just recently and LOVED it.

Love MI-5  (Spooks in the UK and here) and have seen all the series I think. (they are making another)  wonderfully written and such tension.

The only TV we are watching is the UK "Teachers" - which has really fallen apart for it's 4th series. (2004)
.
Partner Colin and I loved "Six Feet Under" and "Carnivale".

They're nice folks and full of the holiday spirit.

My boss asked if maybe I wasn't feeling just a bit competitive (i.e. didn't I want to start putting stuff out), I shared with her my philosophy on such things:

My purpose here on earth is to abate tackiness, not abet it.

You can trust me.

PHOENIX AIRPORT TO TEST NEW FULL-BODY X-RAY SCREENING SYSTEM (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,233604,00.html)
Quote
PHOENIX  — Sky Harbor International Airport here will test a new federal screening system that takes X-rays of passenger's bodies to detect concealed explosives and other weapons.

Some say the high-resolution images — which clearly depict the outline of the passenger's body, plus anything attached to it, such as jewelry — are too invasive.

But the TSA said the X-rays will be set up so that the image can be viewed only by a security officer in a remote location. Other passengers, and even the agent at the checkpoint, will not have access to the picture.

In addition, the system will be configured so that the X-ray will be deleted as soon as the individual steps away from the machine. It will not be stored or available for printing or transmitting, agency spokesman Nico Melendez said.

Of course there is no possibility that the X-Rays themselves might pose a danger; shucks, I remember when every shoe store had a Fluoroscope, and for Christmas I got a nice new glow-in-the-dark wristwatch (nice Radium dial!). I liked to wear the radium watch while I was rubbing mercury onto my pennies to turn them into dimes!

The thought the Big G might misuse a photo image is beyond the pale!

After you, Comrade.

Minuit chrétien

1847

Minuit !

I am safely ensconced at North Ogden Drive in West Hollywood.  I've just learned that there will be no bass player for tomorrow's rehearsal which is most unseemly in my book, but I didn't hire the players.  So, a lot of stuff that should be heard and judged will not be and I can do nothing more about it than express my disapproval.  How can you tell what the problems are when 20% of your band is missing?  The least the player could have done was send a sub.

All right; I've vented.  Now I have work to finish.

I've been having similar experiences here. I'm trying to cut a short film for TNT---something that should take 4 or 5 days but is being crammed into 2. Fed-Ex was supposed to deliver the film yesterday at 8:30AM. It didn't get here until the afternoon, then had to be transferred to tape and synched up with the sound. So I didn't even begin loading it until 10PM. But that was only half the battle.

They also shot black and white film, which was also supposed to arrive at 8:30AM. It got here this afternoon (they wouldn't let us go and pick it up from anywhere!) so I spent the day trying to edit with only half the shots I needed. So I am missing a preservation party that we paid $100 to go to and will also have to work tomorrow instead of being docents on the Xmas tour of homes. Damn you, Fed-Ex!

Back to work...

Sigh.

Hopefully, I can sleep it off.

Now you see, Tom, what happens when your pc crashes.

It's the answer to the age-old question:  "If a PC crashes 'Down Under', does everyone stop posting?"

And the answer is "No," of course.

I'm beginning to like this mid-forties peri-menopausal angst.  Tonight I went to Outback for a steak.  I was seated before 4 yes I said FOUR tables around me. There is no way they were in another section unless my little table was a section of one.  Anyway, 3 different waiters came out, waited on the guy who got there before me, then the four tables that were seated after me and even though each one of the waiters looked at me sitting there, obviously not being waited on, not one of them even said "I'll be with you in a moment" nothing. Just waited on the other tables, turned around and went to the kitchen or wherever they go.  It irritated me so much that I left. On my way out I told the hostess why I was leaving. She just gave me a surprised look and didn't say anything.  I will not be going back to Outback...ever.

To calm my angst, I decided on a little retail therapy. So I  went to Scheels and bought some really nice Columbia boots for the winter,  went to Petco (yes we're stocked up now) and stopped by the grocery where I got a wonderful t-bone steak that I came home and cooked to perfection and ate  with a wonderful baked potato and a big glass of milk.

I am now much happier and very glad I walked out of the restaurant.

Cillaliz was seated early and got no waiter.

The table in front of her got a waiter.

The table behind her got a waiter.

The table to the right of her got a waiter.

The table to the left of her got a waiter.

Cillaliz's waiter did not show up.

Cillaliz did not get a waiter or a steak or a baked potato.

Cillaliz did not even get an apology.

WHERE IS THE JUSTICE?

I guess waiters do work for the tip in that dreadful place; they go for the number of guests!

You did the right thing; leave!

That's what I force myself to do when i'm not happy with a service: I don't make a fuss. I just let them know I'm not happy and leave!
I even did that after buying shoes: I cancelled the sale! I wasn't happy with them in the first place and the attitude of the clerk, and... it works!

Shall I talk about an item I received today after winning it in an eBay auction?

Most of you have probably never heard of Ernest Gold, but he was a fantastic composer and wrote some wonderful film scores, the best-known of which is "Exodus."  He won the 1960 Academy Award for that score.

One of my favorite Gold scores is "Ship of Fools" which features a love them I consider one of the finest ever written (this music accompanied scenes between Oskar Werner and Simone Signoret).

What I won was a rectangle of paper the size of a large index card.  It is inscribed to a guy; underneath it's signed:

Sincerely,

Ernest Gold

And then Gold drew a stave and penned the first five bars of the Theme from "Exodus."

It was barely bid on, and I got it at a ridiculously low price.  I placed a maximum bid of $120 (worried I'd probably lose it) and got it for $18 and change including shipping/handling.

I'm thrilled to have this.

Sounds like a miscommunication gaffe on the part of said hostess, who should have informed whoever was supposed to serve you that you were a table of one.  It sounds as if they presumed that you were waiting for someone, and weren't going to approach your table until the other party arrived.

I spent a good portion of the night listening to Richard Barrios' commentary for the roadshow of SOUTH PACIFIC. Now, the poor guy does have three hours to fill, but his comments are so full of repetition that it really constitutes about an hour of material repeated and elaborated on a bit over and over: about Mitzi Gaynor, about the color filters, about Josh Logan's movie directorial career. All suitable topics for discussion certainly, but the same opinions recited endlessly. He's done some really fine commentaries, but I think this one is too rambling. Perhaps a partner could have helped bring up other topics or engaged in some differences of opinion.

I still have about 20 minutes of film to go!

The INHD1 Channel had another of those Winter Olympic documentaries today - the 1960 Squaw Valley games, so I recorded it and fast forwarded through to see Carol Heiss and Hayes Jenkins win their golds. Jenkins did some very impressive triple jumps. Heiss did mostly singles in her routine. Of course, the film didn't show the entire routines, just possibly a minute of footage from each one.

Back from a long day.  Went in early to look at and build light cues, but no one was ready and nothing began to get written until after seven this evening.  I was warned about this long ago and we gave the designer an entire extra week to have everything together, but that simply didn't happen.  He'd written about fifty cues when I left at eight-thirty, and our stage manager was staying and working with him.  I made it pretty clear that I wasn't going to be happy having him write cues as we were doing tech.  So, I have no way of knowing how tomorrow is going to go.  I shall now write Ye Olde Notes and get them posted early so I can go to bed early and try to get a decent night's sleep.
