Well, you've read the notes, the notes have made you want to eat a Malomar, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently eating Malomars by the mooful.
-
And the word of the day is: CELERITY!
-
I really enjoy a fresh salad, but sometimes the celerity gets stuck in my teeth.
-
It's not even 11:30 p.m. And no one has posted since BK put up the new day?
-
I'm the only person in this fershluganah jernt right now.
Go figger!

"Ice Wars" was pretty much a bust for me, too, DR MattH, although I watched quite a bit of it.
Alexei Yagudin was fantastic in both skates.
Oksana Baiul was ridiculous beyond belief in both her skates, but at least didn't fall in the first one. She looks horrible. She looks to be over 40 and I don't believe she's had her 30th birthday yet.
-
I'm pretty much ready for bed, although have this forum to myself puts me in mind to just post and post and post and post and post and post.
-
I'm looking forward to a decent night's sleep.
There are so many things I want to do this weekend, and I know I can get some of it done if I'm well-rested and out of bed early enough tomorrow (later this morning, that is).

California professionals dine out of Dumpsters (http://www.sunherald.com/mld/sunherald/news/nation/16126463.htm)
PALO ALTO, Calif. - Cynthia Powell and Stephen Vajda are unabashed Dumpster divers who get much of their weekly food from garbage cans.
The two educated Berkeley, Calif., professionals - who are not hungry or otherwise in need - say they are motivated by a growing conservation movement with a mantra that wasting resources, especially food, is shameful.
Powell and Vajda estimate they can save up to $100 a week by dining on day-old bread, vegetables and sometimes chocolate from commercial garbage cans.
The two estimated they know at least a half dozen like-minded people in Berkeley who regularly dine out - way out.
"I'm not hungry," said Powell. "I do it because it's good food, it's free and it's conservation."
Powell said she's been getting in Berkeley Dumpsters at grocery stores and bakeries ever since she moved to town about four years ago. She draws the line at eating meat or dairy products.
...
Now you know why some stores/restaurants douse their garbage with bleach!

Wonderful news about the early arrival of Alice and Emily!!
Congrats to DR RLP on his Gold win....and to MBARNUM on his choice of opening night companions! I hope the waiter where you dine realizes he is serving NOT only a puppet person but also the Queen of Outer Space!

Work today....more work.....retail....
Hmmmm TOD:
Ethel Merman - I really think she is funny in KID MILLIONS and THERE'S NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUSINESS....but I have to choose CALL ME MADAM. She is right on the money there - of course she played the role for a LONG time on the stage, so she had it down pat...but she is just very funny and very knowing about the whole....uh....affair. And she and Donald O'Conner are always fun to watch.
Julie Andrews....THE SOUND OF MUSIC, no close second for me.
Judy Holliday....the first movie I ever saw her in, on TV late one Saturday night....BELLS ARE RINGING.

DR GINNY - I wore my Mamma Mia-DR JOSE ribbon yesterday as well! We were twins!

DRELMORE - I hope you realize that Ms Lucille Ball's FIRST home in Hollywood was at 1344 N Ogden Drive....

Is there NOTHING the Republicans CAN'T do? ;D
'Taint just one party doing it, sad to say. The Dems have been just as bad when it comes to our labeling laws. And I don't see this new Congress reversing the trend.
-
Time for me to get to work, as well.
I'll get a day off next Saturday.
-
Good morning!
What a gorgeous, crystal-clear morning, but we have returned to late autumn. It was in the 30s last night, and the high today is only to be in the low 50s. (It got to 76 here yesterday and all last week.)
I must say, I'm glad to see fall temperatures return. My body does not do well with the up and down temps we've been having. I almost always get sick, and with an audition coming up a week from Sunday, I need to stay healthy.
-
I wish I could have seen Julie in CAMELOT on the stage. Alas, she was gone by the time we could get tickets (but what a ravishing show it was for a pre-teenager). I did see her in the stage version of VICTOR/VICTORIA, but she couldn't match her artistry in the film, and it was a bit of an anticlimax for me.
My favorite film performance is THE SOUND OF MUSIC but I still stubbornly stick to STAR! as I film I return to to see Julie at her most versatile.
-
I never saw Judy Holliday on the stage, so I have no stories to tell there.
My favorite performance of hers is in THE SOLID GOLD CADILLAC, but my favorite film is THE MARRYING KIND. That is one of the most underrated movies ever made.
-
I never saw Ethel Merman on stage either. Since I had seen the Pearl Bailey/DOLLY, I didn't return to see Ethel in it. Never saw her in GYPSY either. I had hopes I'd see her in the ANNIE GET YOUR GUN revival at the New York State Theatre, but we went to something else on that NYC trip (I want to say it was SWEET CHARITY, but I may be mixing my years up).
On film, I prefer Merman in THERE'S NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUSINESS to CALL ME MADAM. I don't think I've ever seen her 1930s ANYTHING GOES, and I'd like to.
And she's certainly funny in MAD WORLD.
-
And the woman behind them? Is she "clean-up"?
Ew, I remember what used to happen when my sister's hampster would poop in it's ball. Not pretty.
-
I saw something interesting reading the Collector's Choice music catalog this morning.
It was about a new release of the original cast recording of DREAMGIRLS. According to the listing, there are three new songs added to the new reissue release that have never been released on LP or CD before.
Does anyone know if the entire score to DREAMGIRLS was recorded originally and just not released at the time of the original LP, or did they do a FOLLIES and not record everything at that recording session?

Whew, I had to "Clear the history" on the computer I used!

Saturday morning greetings to all. I am up and ready to face the day. All that remains is the decision about whether to go up to a craft fair in Riverdale before heading downtown to dance class or if I should do things around the house instead...
-
Last night I saw an amazing performance by the Alvin Ailey dancers. You can see every muscle at work from the second row. Amazing how they can be working that hard but still look so light and beautiful.
-
Yesterday, I listed SUPERMAN RETURNS and BONES in my Media Checklist anticipating that they'd be delivered on Friday (since I got the shipping notice on Monday morning). They didn't come (which is one reason I spent much of yesterday with the roadshow version of SOUTH PACIFIC).
If they come today, I'll begin watching them. If not, I'll probably take THE GREAT ESCAPE off the shelf and watch it. When the new special edition was released several years ago, I bought it and gave my old non-anamorphic DVD to a friend. But I've never watched this new edition, and today might be a good day to do that.

I'm back from the craft fair and it was a big disappointment. Not a lot there, and what was there was mostly jewelry, either hand crafted or manufactured. I was hoping for more arts and craft type items, ornaments, etc. Oh well, I'm glad I went. Now I don't have to wonder about it anymore and the bus ride to and fro was rather pleasant.

DR CILLALIZ,
Regarding your unpleasant restaurant experiece, I quite sympathize. I used to travel a lot on business, sometimes alone, sometimes not, and SEVERAL times was in restaurants where they wouldn't even seat me. They DID seat a couple behind me in line, but refused to give a table to one person. I went to another restaurant, where waiter after waiter walked by, completely ignoring me, even though the restaurant was virtually empty. Since both of these experiences were in the same hotel, I took it up with one of the hotel managers before checking out. I don't get mad often, but I was livid. I asked if it was hotel policy to discriminate against women travelling alone. (The hotel was hosting the conference I was attending.) He was quite taken aback and I don't think he was aware that this goes on. To his credit, he did try to correct some of the other problems I pointed out.
When I've related these incidents to friends they often don't believe me and think I got it wrong, but I know it DOES happen. It's one of those things that you probably wouldn't believe if you didn't witness it yourself.
I'm sorry it happened to you. Perhaps one of us can think up a clever and funny way to deal with it next time.

Thanks Jeanne. I travel a lot, and have dined out solo for years. I've had problems, but honestly not that often. This was the most blatant I've seen in awhile. I've complained in the past, but now I find it better to just calmly explain why I'm leaving and go. Even if someone is directed to wait on my table it would no longer be a good experience for me.

I ended up at an impromptu party at Paul's house last night. It was fun. I was a little crazier than I've been in a while, but after a long week I think it was just what the doctor ordered.

I had some lengthy telephone conversations this afternoon, so I was only able to fit in two CSI: MIAMI episodes. In the first, a man arrested for killing his wife is found not guilty, but the CSI team doesn't take that lying down since it's clear that he practiced on another woman before he actually did the deed, so they go after evidence for the first (practice) murder. Some neat twists to the usual story, and Brad Rowe, who played the suspected killer, is always nice to look at.
-
The other episode had to do with a rather clever robbery scheme at a women's spa. Again, some neat twists to the usual story which made it an enjoyable episode.

Hello one and all and also all and one.
I thank you all for the new job vibes. I am very happy there so far and I am absolutely loving the 10 -20 minute commute as opposed to the 1 - 2 hour one I had for the past 14 years!
-
The Vixter's ELA teacher (no more English class now it's English Language Arts) assigned a powerpoint project to the students (remember when we wrote book reports about the books we had read instead of preparing computer slide slow presentations?)
Which meant that she had control of the computer all week hence my E & T status.
I will not be posting from work until I am well and truly trained in the computer systems and quite sure that my productivity is comparable with my wages.
-
Good news Debby.
-
Many thanks to the kind Tomovoz for the suprise in my mail box today.

About the job not the posting!
-
We are all very excited here as the Vixter has been selected as Lucia for this years Santa Lucia pageant at our church.
Our particular congreagation was started 50+ years ago by a group of Norwegian and Swedish Lutherans, and our Pastor for more than 30 of those years was of Swedish descent
I do not know if this festival is celebrated in any other Lutheran churches but we always celebrate it the 2nd Sunday of Advent.

A brief hello before I return to the evil paper...

I turn it in on Monday... Man am I going to celebrate!!!!!

and return the 25 odd books and various publications I needed for this paper...
I am doing a historical perspective of deaf / hearing impaired and hearing students in a college setting in the latter part of the 20th century. It is also examining the cultural differences and how it affected acceptance and perceptions. I have learned alot!

Just finished interviewing the lovely Ms. Lisa Montell, star of WORLD WITHOUT END, SHE GODS OF SHARK REEF, and TOMAHAWK TRAIL...she is Polish born but spent most of her career playing hispanic and native American roles with a few French roles thrown in for good measure.
She is a wonderful lady and I had a blast talking to her. I am currently reading a book she wrote on the Baha'i faith and we had a nice long talk about it. I have learned a lot about this religion since she and I have been in communication over the last several months...it is a fascinating religion and one that I knew next to nothing about prior to my locating Ms. Montell.
-
While doing the telephone interview the postman brought me several packages including my DeepDiscountDVD order and a lovely package of Richard Diamond episodes from JRand56 which I will very much be enjoying this weekend!!
-
"She Gods of Shark Reef" - a story crying out to be musicalised.
Thanks for sharing your enjoyment Michael. (and Yes I mean that).
-
I must now go grocery shopping because my cupboards are bare! And upon my return I will finish watching last nights Bollywood movie...GUNGA JUMNA (1961) which is fast becoming one of my favorites!
JRand56, I think you would very much like this one...great story, lively dances, and it is in color!

Broken Leg Vibes to George !
Thanks!! Actually, last night was opening night and we had a sold out performance! They actually had to add several chairs and turn away about 40 people...including some who had actually paid! It turns out that someone sold tickets at the door and didn't keep track of how many, so they sold about 15 more than they ended up having room for! :o NOT GOOD! One of the people turned away (if I remember correctly) was a reviewer! Most people were kind enough to get tickets for another night.
-
I see DR George - did you break a fishnet-clad leg last night?
Fortunately, not literally. ;) Last night (opening) went quite well! We had a full audience and my parents were there! The pacing was good (except for a couple of fight scenes, but I'm not in them). In my first Indian scene, however, someone jumped a line and I wasn't able to get my last line in, so I only had nine lines last night instead of ten. Other than that, the energy was up and the performance was a success. Hopefully, tonight will be just as good. I don't know how many tickets have been sold (I know it's not sold out at all), but we should have a good show tonight. :D
-
Congratulations, DR George, on your opening night!
-
Thanks for the report George.
-
Thanks Ginny and Tomovoz. :)
-
And now...
-
Thanks to Elmore, JRand, Jeanne, Jennifer, Ron and anyone else I might have missed for the good condo/water damage wishes. Short recap (I have to leave real soon): My condo flooded and the water was coming from the wall. I called a plumber who opened the wall and found that my pipes DID NOT burst!! The neighbor's did! HOWEVER, the owner of that unit DID NOT file a claim with his insurance company (actually, he did but he told them to have it "destroyed") because he doesn't feel responsible or liable. :P He's going to pay for the repairs to his unit on his own, which means I'm screwed. The bastard. I think that if I want to pursue it, I would have to prove negligence on his part.
Yesterday, Ron wrote:
Pardon if this is a painful question, but don't you have insurance?
Ron, have you ever heard of a "round tuit?" Well, sadly, I hadn’t gotten one yet. :( My bad...real bad. :'(
-
Now I have to leave to go to the theater. I'll be back later.

I've sometimes written total oddities to see if anyone will comment! LOL

:-*
-
SOMETIMES???!!! :o ;D
(That's why I commented on the Vicki Lawrence info yesterday! I know you better!)
The trouble with having to play "catch-up" is that you need to comment on posts as you read them, always risking being scooped/bitten in the ass by someone else's post a little later on.
Still...it must tickle TommyovOz that more than one person jumped on his little morsel!
-
It's such a BIG night in certain areas, I feel quite isolated in the boring old Bay area!
Maybe I ought to do a little night shopping.
-
One of my friends here did not manage to get a "round tuit" earlier this year. His apartment was flooded from the apartment above. Most of his possessions were destroyed. (He was not at home when the flooding happened). The "round tuit" may not have stopped the water damage but it would have made the recovery process less painful.
-
I watched the Richard Donner cut of "Superman II" this afternoon.
It was imminently watchable but, truthfully, it's not any kind of revelation or lost masterpiece.
How could it be? When Donner was directing "Superman: The Movie", he shot footage for both movies. At a certain point, however, he had to abandon shooting scenes for the second movie and concentrate on getting the first one ready for release.
He had quite a bit shot from which this film was pieced together, and it's fascinating to watch from the perspective of passed time, the film that ultimately was released, and the differences that exist between visions.
I do not know what squabbles went on between Donner and the Salkinds, but the fact is that Donner never really got to shoot "final" scenes of much of what he intended, so what they've pieced into this film is composited scenes and what's being called "screen test" scenes (although not "screen test" in the way most of us think of that term....one key scene is with Reeve and Kidder...and you just know their participation wasn't in question). You just know, as this movie plays, that Donner would have shot more scenes and had scenes written to cover transtions.
It is a different movie. It's interesting. It's worth viewing. Don't approach it as though it was being presented as the better movie, because there is no way that could be possible unless Donner had shot and finished the sequel and then had it rejected. He did not.
Richard Lester shot quite a bit of what was in "Superman II" (and Donner has some stuff in there, too). It's not as smoothly edited as one might wish because transition shots don't exist that would abet "smoothness" from one scene to another, but what IS in this film is choice and worth the time of everyone who is interested in what Donner's vision was and how it might have looked.
-

My, what a lovely day it's been! The band rehearsal was a lot of fun and I like the players quite a bit. Our BK was in fine fettle all day, and I enjoyed meeting the cast, especially Kevin Spirtas, whom I met earlier in the year, and Alet, whom I hadn't seen since we recorded "Sondheim At The Movies." My new best friend, Merrill, is delightful, and I think this week will be productive and fuin for one and all.
DR JRand56, I don't know the address of Lucy's house; was it on North Ogden Drive?
DR Francois, I love Gavin Creel! I thought he was one of the few good things in THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE, and after working on the recording of "Fine & Dandy" with him, I think his voice is one of the most beautiful instruments in the theatre. I've been recommending him to people who produce pops orchestra Broadway nights, and I wish him a huge success in London.

So many posts from today to catch up on!

Back from tech, which went very fast and very well, save for two disgusting operator errors that caused said operator to lost twenty-five light cues TWICE. He finally realized he hadn't put the board in auto save mode and he hadn't been saving. Not so good. But, we got the cast out at six, we don't have to work tomorrow, and he's staying tonight and rewriting all the cues that got lost. It wasn't perfect, of course, but I gave him my notes about what I needed fixed and now he'll just add and subtract from what we have. I'm hoping for a fairly smooth run-through Monday night - fingers crossed.
More about everything later, including the fun of hearing elmore's charts for the first time.

I watched the last CSI: MIAMI episode on disc 4 in the set. It involved the shooting of two brothers in an abandoned hotel in Miami. The story actually involved money laundering and a modern-day Bonnie and Clyde who were disgusting and ridiculous. Parts of the episode were fine, but all the parts with the couple were absurd making for one of the weaker episodes of the fourth season.
-
Next, I did put the special edition remaster of THE GREAT ESCAPE in and watched the entire film (almost three hours). Much of it looks quite wonderful with good color and sharp as can be. SOme shots, though, look faded, overly processed, or soft. Very jarring when those intrude in what looks like a pristine transfer for about 75% of the running time. Sound has been remastered, too, into a Dolby 5.1 track. OK, nothing extraordinary, but then, I suspect the film played its run with a mono soundtrack.
-
Since Julie Andrews was one of our topics of the day, I put in THE SOUND OF MUSIC and watched about an hour of selected scenes. Of course, it's easy to get pulled into the film and want to just let it run. I'm at the festival scene now, and tomorrow, I'll probably just watch the rest of it.
I didn't remember how thundering the bass was during the wedding sequence. That organ's bass pedals had my windows rattling.
-
Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite film and stage performances by Julie Andrews, Judy Holliday, and Ethel Merman?
Julie:
That's Life and Duet For One. The latter she is amazing in and she should have been nominated that year instead of Jane Fonda for The Morning After. I have only seen Julie in Putting it Together and Victor/Victoia. As musch as I was disappinted with V/V I ould have to say it was my favorite of the two. She did not have a lot to do in PIT
Judy: I have been partial to It Could Happen to You. Never saw Judy on stage.
Ethel is a little more problamatic. I don't think she was a great film performer. I have only seen her in There 's No Business Like Show Busines. It's a Mad (4) World, The Art of Love and Airplane. None of them was a favorite of mine. Never saw her on stage.
I know she did a TV version of Annie Get Your Gun. I hope it will once again see the light of day.

TOD from yesterday.
The Ultimate Superman Collection. I have seen
Superman II The Donner Cut, watch various documentaries and the 30 minutes or so of the cut material from Superman 4. They were laughable bad and I cannot understand why anyone would have wanted them restored for this collection.
-
I'm watching the Eukanba National Championship Dog Show. Why I love dog shows I'll never know, but I really do. The cats have left the room. They are not amused.
-
But working hard the last few days and have had no free time. Glad for the weekend.

Pet Your Cat, Get Schizophrenia? (http://newsmax.com/archives/articles/2006/12/1/115734.shtml?s=he)
Friday, Dec. 1, 2006
The next time you pet a cat, you could be taking the first step toward developing schizophrenia.
So says Dr. E. Fuller Torrey, M.D., associate director for laboratory research at the Stanley Medical Research Institute in Maryland.
It's long been suspected that schizophrenia could be caused by an infectious agent that affects the brain's neurotransmitters.
The jury is still out on that in the medical community. But the infectious agent currently thought to be the most likely culprit in leading to schizophrenia is Toxoplasma gondii, a protozoan parasite.
"Its definitive host is the cat, which is unaffected by the parasite," Dr. Torrey, co-author of the book "Beasts of the Earth: Animals, Humans, and Disease," writes in Forbes magazine.
Humans can become infected by the parasite by inhaling the cysts from cat feces in a litter box. It can also be contracted from contaminated water or undercooked meat from a pig, lamb or other animal that has been infected.

George, I am surprised you could get a mortgage without having homeowners insurance. I thought mortgage companies required it.
The way that it was explained to me was that "homeowner's insurance" that's required for home purchases is mainly to cover the entire building from damage...water, fire, whatever...because the bank owns the building unit it's paid off and since it's a condo and I don't own the entire building, just the inside walls and my belongings, that specific kind of insurance isn't needed. The Home Owner's Association dues have the coverage if anything happens to the whole (or outside of the) building. What I need is renter's insurance that also covers internal damage and repair.

This has actually been in the back of my mind. My sister's boyfriend had the presence of mind to take pictures, but I wouldn't know how to tell if they're good enough to show if there was shoddy workmanship to begin with.

I am glad I have renters insurance. You need it now adays. Many of the landlords run slum apartments and you really have to be on your toes in Fargo when one is renting. Some property management operations are really bad news.

In my job, I use a couple of important website databases that have specified that their programs are NOT yet compatible with IE7! Our whole library system can't switch over (which they eventually plan to do) until those few sites have been made compatible.

If the water soaking your carpet came from the neighbor's pipe he is liable, whatever the cause of the leak (if he want's to place he blame on some pluber or other, that's his problem).
Note - I'm no lawyer, but I suspect I'm right on this one.
