Title: CLEWLESS

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were anything but clewless, and now it is time for you to post until the clewless cows come home - they're currently trying to get out of the maelstrom and the vortex, not necessarily in that order.

This was posted on a website HERE (http://www.nerve.com/screeningroom/tv/avenueq/).  The lyrics for the entire scene was posted, but I'm only quoting the first part because that's all I need for the Topic of the Day. ;)

*Scene 5 – Kate's Apartment

Kate Monster: (out, to the audience) Finally! I get to teach a whole lesson all by myself! And I'm gonna teach something relevant, something modern – the Internet! (sings) THE INTERNET IS REALLY, REALLY GREAT.

Trekkie Monster: (appearing briefly) FOR PORN!

Kate Monster: I GOT A FAST CONNECTION SO I DON'T HAVE TO WAIT.

Trekkie Monster: (appearing again) FOR PORN!

Kate Monster: THERE'S ALWAYS SOME NEW SITE.

Trekkie Monster: FOR PORN!

Kate Monster: I BROWSE ALL DAY AND NIGHT

Trekkie Monster: FOR PORN!

Kate Monster: IT'S LIKE I'M SURFING AT THE SPEED OF LIGHT.

Trekkie Monster: FOR PORN!

Kate Monster: Trekkie!....

And then it goes on from there. ;D

Good morning, all!  My, it's been such an interesting 24 hours and not much of what I had planned it to be.  I got to Toyland to learn the project was to be terminated on Dec 31.  Then, last night, around 6:30 pm EST, I had a long conversation with the head of the institute funding the project and I think the project will continue through publication of several scores.  This led to my spending several hours processing all this information and communicating with various people on the project.  I finally dragged myself into bed, sorted 10 days' worth of mail and passed out.

Today, I shall attend a memorial service for the late great actor Barnard Hughes, of the films MIDNIGHT COWBOY, DA, and THE LOST BOYS, the tv series BLOSSOM, and many other things.  I met Barney when I tried to convince him to play the Toymaker for the Houston Grand Opera in 1991.  I had known his wife Helen since she appeared in THE FIFTH OF JULY, and they were both wonderful people.  After his heart surgery, I'd occasionally see Barney on his daily walk up and down Broadway - I'm at 82nd and he and Helen were at 95th, I believe.  The last time I saw him was backstage at WAITING IN THE WINGS, in which he and Helen both appeared.  I was very fond of him and I miss him a lot.

I look forward to seeing Helen, with whom I last spoke a little over a year ago.  I hope she is well.  She and Barney did a wonderful HOMICIDE episode together and I have to buy the season in which they appeared.

TOD:  I hate the fact that my imbecilities and pronouncements are committed forever to the aether. Sometimes one should mince words.  But I forget.

I am in no way related to Woody Allen.

I don't even look like Woody Allen.  I'm taller, and have better looking hair, and a moustache and beard.  Woody Allen doesn't have a moustache or a beard, and would look silly with either.

The only thing that Woody Allen has that I don't have is Soon-Yi, and I've got him trumped there because I've got der Brucer!  Who also has a beard and moustache, which would look incredably silly on her!

So there!

TOD - The Internet has made significant impact on my professional life.  Sometimes I wonder how we librarians did reference work without it, but I also lament the fact that it has raised the layperson's expectations unrealistically.  We have seen a decline in what we call the "ready reference" type of question as more and more people are Googling and getting what may or may not be a credible answer.  We get many calls at the library that start out, "I've been on the Internet for hours trying to find out [this or that].  Can you help me?"  We often find the answer in about 10 seconds in, of all things, a book.  Sometimes it's actually faster to use an almanac or encyclopedia.

For myself, I love the connectedness of boards like this, email, blogs, etc.  And, especially at this time of year, I do love online shopping.  That's probably a natural evolution from my love of catalog shopping.  Not that I don't like being in stores and malls, but when I have specific things to purchase I like ordering and having them delivered.  I prefer my in-person shopping to be more leisurely and serendipitous.

TOD:
I would hate to be without the Internet, but I do feel that technology is at least partly responsible for the degradation in human relations. I think people get used to talking to the computer and forget how to relate in a kind and responsible manner when they do talk to humans. There's far less thoughtfulness and concern expressed, whether it's a sincere "How are you?" or just taking a moment to say hello and chat a bit. Friends who live in the South tell me that people there still take time to chat and be friendly, but said friends are also retired and live among less-stressed neighbors. I'd be interested in other what other H/Ks have to say about this. I suspect it is partly regional.

Good morning!

Another day full of cool air and moderate December temperatures. Beautiful. I was out Christmas shopping this morning, and I had to take my heavy jacket off when I got out of the car at my first store. It was barely 10 a.m. and already too warm for a heavy jacket.

I have a HUGE pet peeve that's irritating me right now...why do doctors think it's ok to double and triple book and leave people waiting for over an hour before seeing them???  It's just so rude. I can't stand when that happens. What made it worse is Paul, who isn't working, thought it would be fun to go to the doctor at the same time I went. I've had an appointment for a couple weeks, at least.   Yesterday he talks them into booking him at the same time and they took him before me. So I had to wait even longer than I would have if he hadn't called in.  I wasn't pleased... On the bright side, I left with a prescription for muscle relaxants.

End of rant

Hmm, the internet....

The internet does have its good and bad points and they balance precariously on a sword. Words can have many construed meanings and what one types in jest can be looked at as viciously by another.

HOwever, it is a good research and communication tool. Especially for those who are HOH, instant messaging and text messaging is a wonderful way to communicate with one another.  Ironically, IMing has some roots in the tty and tdd that were developed for the deaf. Many abbreviations and shorthand lingos come from the deaf and their use of the tty.

I have found it useful for sharing my hobbies and 'cough' appreciations of various writers and actors....

Since I do genealogy research, it has proven to be a wonderful reference tool. One does have to take into consideration that the internet have its seedy side and somethings need to be taken with a grain of salt and often double checked with other resources.

OLD CHRISTINE had an off-night as the "Meanie Moms" turned into the "Cheaty Moms," at least one of them did by lying about an accident she caused and getting friends to lie for her (to stay in her good graces) all at Christine's expense. I didn't find any of this at all funny, and it made up a majority of the half hour. The one amusing thing was Christine renting an overlarge SUV and her family and friends luxuriating in its expansiveness.

CSI: MIAMI continued the terrorist scenario it started two weeks ago with one of the prime suspects in an attempted bombing finding herself hunted by her own band. So Hortaio and his squad, who have been gathering evidence to convict her, now find themselves having to attempt to find and protect her. OK hour with some unpleasantness for Ryan when he once again opted for the glamor of publicity rather than the hard and fast rules of the lab. Not the first time this has happened, and I suspect it won't be the last.

DEXTER moved in very predictable ways toward its season finale next week as what we expected to happen did in fact happen, a loved one being abducted by the Ice Truck Killer. Enjoyed the show despite some predictable moments. I did like very much the prison sequence which came near the end of the episode.

THE CLASS had a so-so episode though it spent too much time with the characters I don't much care for (football player, his wife, and the guy who's loved her his whole life). Jesse Tyler Ferguson's routine on a stripper pole was fairly entertaining, and the new nieghbor who made a living with her "fruitography" was funny, too. Not much else was, however.

Ended the afternoon with last Thursday's 30 ROCK. Sounds like a broken record but for me Tracy Morgan continues to bore, Alec Baldwin continues to steal the show, and the show needs to give us more with the supporting characters. Once THE OFFICE did this, it became a MUCH better show (also giving the leads a break from having the carry the burden of the show in every single episode). 30 ROC would greatly benefit from expanding their roles and giving them some real personalities.

Wow!  good quotes.  I hope this bodes well for The Brain!

I'm back from a charming and moving memorial service for Barnard Hughes.  I didn't see Helen, and the Walter Kerr Theatre was packed with friends and fans.  Wonderful people spoke:
Lauren Bacall
Remak Ramsey, who read comments from people who could not be there like Harold Prince and Mike Nichols
Sam Waterston, who played opposite Barney at the Public Theatre in MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING - I'm so glad it's on DVD! - and HAMLET
Elizabeth Wilson, who did a couple of plays and a tv sereis with Barney
Brian Dennehy, who told how Barney secretly fed him when he was a struggling actor
Joe Dowling, former director of the Abbey Theatre in Dublin, who directed Barney in TRANSLATIONS in New York and in YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU at the Abbey
Lynne Meadow of Manhattan Theatre Club
Christine Ebersole sang "You'll Never Know" and James Naughton sang "Danny Boy"

The afternoon was wonderful.  After Doug, Baney and Helen's son, spoke, there was a wonderful series of projects of photos, production shots, and posters from Barney's life.  He was truly a lovely man.

Back from

1) the post office, where I mailed 2 boxes (one to San Diego and one to New Jersey on behalf of the friend who's wintering in San Diego;
2) the Buick/Pontiac/GMC dealer, where my car was checked up this morning;
3) the garden center, where I bought 4 pixie poinsettias - 2 for each of my baskets that resemble sleighs
4)  the mall, where I got a new battery for my watch, some Christmas cards to send, some stocking stuffers, and the beginnings of a present for our niece; and
5) the grocery, where I bought the fixings for burgers for dinner.

All in the rain.

DR GINNY,
I appreciated your words about people spending many hours doing Google searches, then calling you. I tend to keep lots of notes on things--some are hard-copy, some are online. People often say, "Just do a Google search." Well, I do hundreds of them. Sometimes I find what I want, sometimes I don't. A good reference book/file, etc can be a real time-saver.

Vibes to Cilaliz, hope your feeling better.

Comfort vibes to DR Elmore on the loss of your friend.  I'm also glad things worked out for Toyland.  I think you have been working on it since I met you.

Jane, I'm glad the tests came back good.  Good health vibes, just the same.

As for internet, if it wasn't for it, I never would have met this lovely group of people and that makes it worth is to me.  Of course, I also like to shop and can spend hours on Ebay and looking at things.

If I have a question about a health problem I look on WebMD and I love reading the different pet sites about dogs.

Pastor of 2,100-member church resigns, admits relations with men

Barnes admits his actions to congregation with video

BY THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
December 11, 2006

ENGLEWOOD — The founding pastor of the 2,100-member Grace Chapel has resigned after he said he had sexual relations with other men.

Paul Barnes, who led the church for 28 years, told his congregation Sunday in a videotaped message that church leaders allowed The Denver Post to view.

He and his wife have two adult daughters.

“While we cannot condone what he has done, we continue to support and love Paul,” associate pastor Dave Palmer said in a written statement.

Palmer told The Denver Post that the church got an anonymous call last week from a person who overheard a conversation in which someone mentioned “blowing the whistle” on evangelical preachers engaged in homosexuality, including Barnes.

Palmer told the newspaper he met with Barnes, who confessed. A board of elders held an emergency meeting Thursday and accepted Barnes’ resignation.

“I have struggled with homosexuality since I was a 5-year-old boy,” Barnes, 54, said in the videotaped message. “... I can’t tell you the number of nights I have cried myself to sleep, begging God to take this away.”

The good news is that we have discovered the cause: (see next post).

A devil food is turning our kids into homosexuals

There's a slow poison out there that's severely damaging our children and threatening to tear apart our culture. The ironic part is, it's a "health food," one of our most popular.

Now, I'm a health-food guy, a fanatic who seldom allows anything into his kitchen unless it's organic. I state my bias here just so you'll know I'm not anti-health food.

The dangerous food I'm speaking of is soy. Soybean products are feminizing, and they're all over the place. You can hardly escape them anymore.

Soy is feminizing, and commonly leads to a decrease in the size of the penis, sexual confusion and homosexuality.

I sort of admire the producers of High Fidelity for at least being honest and not wanting to lose yet more dough for their investors - a lot more than can be said for other idiot producers who, despite their shows being critical and financial losers, keep them open because their egos preclude them from wanting to admit to a fast flop.  Mr. Merrick had fast flops - didn't phase him - it was on to the next.

I began my evening with an episode of BONES from the third DVD in the first season set. I remembered parts of the show as it unfolded (though not specifics about why the murder was committed). Took place in Santa Fe as Angela and a male friend spent a three week vacation. He and his Indian guide went missing, and she feared the worst. An average episode in the series, but one with a good bit of heart and tenderness between Angela and Temperence.

Watched Wedding Wars last night, Matt. Kinda of clever I thought, in that it used a humorous approach on the surface but was quite strong in its politics.

I agree with you. It had a stance and stuck to it, but served it with a sweet coating.

HBO has one of those First Look thirty minute puff pieces on DREAMGIRLS on tonight, and I got the DVR to record it. I'll watch it tomorrow.

I also have one of the True Life Adventure DVD sets to watch tomorrow and probably THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA. Looking forward to all of those programs.

After Saturday nights show several of the HHW DRs and a couple of the play's cast members went to Genghis Cohen's (where Tracy Lords was spotted eating a couple of tables away from us).

Here we find the wonderful DearReaderLaura and MusicGuy.

Laura is a complete joy! I love her (and I wish I could have gone to the beach with you Laura! That would have been a lot of fun)! And for a church going lady she sure did laugh hard at the dirty parts in the play  :-X

MusicGuy (Lyn) is one of the nicest people I have ever met. The next day he took me on a nice motor tour of his old stomping grounds in Hollywood where I saw some very cool houses and the stories behind them, and he treat me to a delicious breakfast at Cafe 101 for my birthday!

I can't believe this is the only photo I got of these two crazy kids (Anna I am sorry about this one!).

Former DR Maria and current DR Michael Shayne share a moment together (unfortunatley Maria looks all contorted because I took the photo a bit before she was ready!)

Michael Shayne was only in town a very short time so we didn't get to see much of him, but he is a great guy nevertheless...DR Maria, of collasping racks fame, is a sweetheart who I am glad I finally got to meet!

The hole in the wall in the corner is where the leaky pipe was and it was repaired through that wall.  I still need to get that fixed. ::)

can the piano be restored orfixed from the wetness? Did the neighbor claim any responsibility?

The owner of the unit next door (he rents it out) doesn't want to pay for my damages.  I'm going to call him again and hopefully he'll change his mind.  I have pictures!  Lots of pictures.  I do NOT think that I should have to pay for this at all.  As for the piano, it's real old and hasn't been tuned since before we moved to Washington State (from Colorado) 30 years ago!  So, I'm not even going to do anything about that.  I don't think it'd be worth it.

I had to pay to have the hole cut into the wall and the owner of next door said that he'd pay for that...big deal! :P He needs to own up for the whole thing...the hole, the carpet and the wall.

ICAM, he should own up to it for it is his negligence that caused problems in your flat.

Inside Du-Pars: DR Singingnymph and DR MusicGuy watch as BK enjoys his meal

Singingnymph drove all the way down from Fresno that very morning and joined us for breakfast, then saw the matinee. A very nice gal and it was great to meet her even though for just a short time.

One of the stars of BRAIN FROM PLANET X, Kevin Spirtas along with a man whose name completely escapes me at the moment.

Diana Darrin is now a big fan of Kevin's and she is going to be getting his CD very soon. She loved his singing voice!

On to other adventures...my lunch date with Rock Stevens, star of HERCULES AND THE TYRANTS OF BABLYON and MUSCLE BEACH PARTY! We at in Studio City at a place called CAMILLE'S. The food was, in the words of Bruce Kimmel, yummalicious!

Rock was heading to the gym afterwards.

Camille's is one block from the home environment - you just walk over the footbridge and voila.
