Title: RECORDING THE BRAIN
Post by: bk on December 18, 2006, 01:05:23 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were brief and to the point, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're recording some Christmas moosic.

Well...today's two-show day went quite well!  We took pictures in between the shows and pizzas were brought in for everyone!!  The audience for the 2:00 matinee was a little sedate, but appreciative at the bows.  The evening audience was a little more vocal.  My sister, her boyfriend and my niece were all able to come to the 8:00 show.  Her power came on at 3:00 pm Sunday.

There was one major flub during the 8:00 show!  Dennis, the guy playing Mr. Mills the lawyer, didn't enter at the last big scene where we have the one really big song!  He has a couple of lines and then he starts singing "Hang the bastard, hang him high..." and then the song goes on from there...but he never showed up!  There was about a ten second moment of everyone knowing that Dennis wasn't there and what can we do??  I think that one of the guys playing the trappers said something to me and I just started singing his opening lines and we went on from there.  Before that, I was despirately trying to think of his spoken lines, but I had no clew!  I didn't normally start singing until the whole chorus comes in on the song, four lines in, so I never paid attention to what he was actually saying.  Anyway, the song got started and then Dennis just saunters in, like he doesn't have a care in the world.  Evidently, he was chatting with Kim, who plays Liane the horse, and didn't realize what was going on. ::) I'm sure that the audience noticed something, but I don't think that it ruined the show for anyone at all. :)

I haven't cleaned anything out yet.  Actually, some things look salvageable, so on Tuesday (I have to usher tonight), I'll take a look at things and see what might still be edible. :) There should be something.  I did have a lot of pre-packaged, fully cooked items, so I'll check it out.  My mom was a nurse, so she can tell me if anything's really bad and should not be consumed, at all.

Good morning, al!  I have a trek to the Lower East Side this morning to purchase some giftwrap supplies, after which I shall wrap my family's gifts, work on my libretto report, and hopefully visit - and perhaps see DREAMGIRLS - with our E&T DR Jose, a day crammed with incident.

Beyond that, I shall spend the day wailing and raging that I am not at the recording sessions for The Brain.

DR Tomovoz, I love the Windy City London cast recording, too!

TOD - where to start?

I like a LOT of the music on the Valley of the Dolls soundtrack - although none of it (save Tony Scotti's track) is sung by the people in the movie.  Even Dionne's title track is re-done by Dory Previn.  But I like the score and the scoring.

An obscure Elmer Bernstein LP - the soundtrack to a movie titled Where's Jack? with a title tune by Bernstein and Don Black sung by Mary Hopkin.  And True Grit, another Bernstein score that just soars!

That will get me started.

Good Morning, All!  Happy Birthday to PennyO.  Many Happy Birthdyas over the last few weeks, I hope.

Three cast albums that I have loved for some time are:

TENDERLOIN
HIGH SPIRITS
GOLDILOCKS

All wonderful and yet not great hits nor greatly revived.  This surprises me most I think with HIGH SPIRITS which has a good back and a nice score.  On e of the songs is dated, but the rest hold up well.

I enjoyed the finale of "Survivor: Cook Islands."

SPOILER!

I have been rooting for Yul since the first week, and there was a period when I thought Ozzie ought to be targeted for a very special "the tribe has spoken" moment.

BUT...in the past few weeks, I gained a great respect for Ozzie and he became my favorite player.

I'm jiggy with the outcome of the show, however.  Yul rules!

While i did like yul in the past. I much prefer ozzy. I was screaming when he won that final IM (so hard). But very disappointed that he lost. I was also extremely disappointed that they allowed yul to use his idol right into the finals. That should not be allowed.

Also extremely disappointed with CBS that they did not reveal the final results of who voted for who. To me that is one of the most important things.

MattH -- you are having an Arizona Christmas!

Indeed we are! We did have three or four December days where the highs were in the 40s, but last night our low was in the 50s!

The Farmer's Almanac had said that this would be an abnormally cold winter in NC in December (but more moderate for January and February). So far, it's been a little off the mark.

I still have episodes of both MEDIUM and POLICE SQUAD to watch from their DVD boxed sets.

But I have some errands to run this afternoon after lunch, so I may not get to much viewing until tonight. Luckily, everything I'm interested in is in reruns (though I may watch the BONES rerun tonight since it's one of my favorite shows).

HAPPY BIRTHDAY (AND SAFE TRAVELS) TO PENNYO!

AND HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO DAN THE MAN.
We need Ellen W. (was that her name?) on RATM, stat.  :)

I guess my free-for-all Ask BK question of yesterday has been ignored.  Sigh.  They don't call me Mr. Cellophane for nothing.  ;)

I have a lot of floperoos that I love.  One new one I just got that I'm enjoying immensely is Now is the Time for All Good Men.  Some really lovely stuff in that one--and, JR, yet another show based in Indiana (like Seventeen, which I mentioned eons ago).  But keeping with my Ask BK question of anon, I absolutely love Schmidt & Jones' Celebration.  I actually built a whole cabaret around tunes from that a few years ago.

Re:  the missing Mt. Hood climbers.  OK, this is no doubt going to raise some hackles, but I have relatively little sympathy for these people.  First of all, there were extremely well-publicized winter storm warnings in effect, given to all climbers when they apply for their permit.  Second and most importantly, these "experienced pro's" were too macho to spring the extra $5 (FIVE DOLLARS!!!!) to carry along a locater transponder device which would have pinpointed their location immediately.

Call me the Grinch, but I similarly had little sympathy for the ill-fated Kim family, who with two small children in the car decided to get off I-5 and take a logging road (LOGGING ROAD) with clearly marked signs saying it was IMPASSIBLE in the winter and then, even worse, got off that onto a spur road (oy!), and then got stuck for 9 days.

Use your G-d given brains, people!!!

JMK - I wrote a rather lengthy post about Mr. Schmidt and 110 - I can't imagine it completely disappeared into the ether, but stranger things have happened.

I said that I think that 110 is one of my favorite scores of all time, and that certainly for Love, Don't Pass Me By (or whatever the title is) Mr. Schmidt told me he was absolutely going for the Rodgers sound.  I prefer the score to many R&H scores.

Cilla - I also really enjoy the score to TUSCALOOSA'S CALLING ME... - I even find myself humming "Everything You Hate is Right Here" when I have those NYC type experiences that can be frustrating :) , and "New York from the Air" is one of those songs I just start thinking about every now and then.  I think it was an off-Broadway success in its time, even with reports of a planned move to Broadway which never materialized, but somehow never got a major revival.

I saw that show and loved every minute of it.  It has two of the most beautiful New York songs ever written.

The album only about a half hour long!  Do you happen to remember how long the show itself was?  Were there (m)any more songs or was the rest of it made up of skits?

Guilty pleasure soundtracks:

Years and years ago when I was in high school Mr. Albert Glasser, who did the music for many low budget films of the 50s, sent me the entire music to ATTACK OF THE PUPPET PEOPLE, which I cherish. It has all the music and all the songs and even the errors, all from his original tapes.

Also, I am crazy about the soundtrack from the recent Bollywood film LAKEER. The movie was so-so but the songs are fantastic and I never tire of listening to them (or watching the picturizations of them from the movie).

My memory is that it was a two-act revue with maybe a running time of two hours, but it was 30 years ago!   There were several sketches, one about a taxi driver.  I liked the cast, which I recall substituted Chip Zien for one of the guys on the recording, and I remember that Jimmy Hammerstein directed it.  There were projections of New York, and that's all I remember.

When the Barbican played host to the heroes of Brazil’s Tropicalia movement, the demure singer Gal Costa helped revive memories of Rio’s swinging Sixties. Proving that she is not content to live in the past, she came up with Hoje (Trama), her most assured album in a long time. Writing contributions from the underrated Lokua Kanza gave the bossa-influenced material even greater depth than usual.

When I checked the calendar today it stated it is is monday... Yep, from my series of unfortunate catastrophes it would support that assessment...

1. I have been up since midnight... THat is what I get for falling asleep watching "IN America".

2. I did finish a christmas present and that would not be considered the catastrophe...

3. I had to work at 730 am... (My normal schedule is 330pm to midnight)

4. About 6 am I heard a crack and ignored it. I went back a few minutes later to get an envelope to make a package and when I pulled the envolope from the top slot of this storage unit, I heard another loud crack.... THe loud crack caused the entire unit to come crashing down and now my computer room is an unholy mess!!! IT looks like Hurricane Dakota has struck!!

5. WORK: Since they were short staffed I have been in every branch library covering for at least an hour... I am not at the architecture branch library and I really wonder why they are even open for there is NO ONE here!! I have information I can waitress but no one to waitress it to!  I have already been to the Chemistry and Health Sciences library and I even did hte outside book drops!!

6. I am bored out of my gourd and I did not even bring any paper to do any writing with....

7.  It is a nice day out and the sun is shining!!

8. Does not want to look at another string of lights or strands of beads for a year!!

9. I wish this puter had speakers so I could listen to something... The silence is driving me batty!

10. I am done with my christmas shopping!

Jobim himself called Gal's voice "the most perfect instrument" he'd ever heard.  She's unusual for a Brasilian vocalist in that she has less of that sotto voce quality that the better known ones like Astrud, Wanda and Gracinha have.  I personally love her and recommend anything by her!

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:

Cruel Executions! (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,236802,00.html)
Quote
Federal Judge Rules California Executions Unconstitutional
Friday , December 15, 2006

SAN FRANCISCO — A federal judge who imposed a moratorium on executions in California ruled Friday that the state's method of lethal injection is unconstitutional because it violates the ban on cruel and unusual punishment.

California's "implementation of lethal injection is broken, but it can be fixed," U.S. District Judge Jeremy Fogel said.
Fogel said the case raised the question of whether a three-drug cocktail administered by the San Quentin State Prison is so painful that it "offends" the Eighth Amendment ban on cruel and unusual punishment.

Fogel's decision came on the same day that Florida Gov. Jeb Bush suspended all executions in that state after a botched execution this week.

Lethal injection is the preferred execution method in 37 states. Last month, a federal judge declared unconstitutional Missouri's injection method, which is similar to California's.

Now, if what we want is quick and painless, get out your knitting needles:

However, considering the large number of folks who seem to be able to do themselves in, seemingly painlessly, with the non-judicious use of alcohol and pills combined, why can't we manage the same for death row?

If the function of the execution is to send a message to others as a deterrent, then it should be public and ghastly. (Giving pain to the condemned's family is an unfortunate part of the deal).

If the function is to ensure that the condemned never gets another chance to take a life, then pills and booze at bedtime should do the trick.

To permit unprofessional needle-jabbing in almost private conditions meets no social purpose.

For that matter, neither hanging or firing squad have been placed off-limits.

der Brucer.

For the record:

A. I believe society has a right to impose capital punishement.

B. As a practical matter, I believe capital punishment should be banned in all but a very few cases -  where a criminal already incarcerated for a capital crime, commits murder.

By simply taking the death penalty off of the table, we could save vast sums of public funds (some of which might then be expended to provide for better trials in the first place). The system seems able to keep miscreants under lock and key for life - let's stick with it.

Quote
Walt Disney: man or mouse?
Those who pigeonhole him as everyman or kitschmeister are missing the big picture.

By Neal Gabler
Neal Gabler is the author, most recently, of "Walt Disney: The Triumph of the American Imagination."
December 17, 2006

FRIDAY MARKED THE 40th anniversary of Walt Disney's death from lung cancer, a long time by most measures and an eternity for figures in the popular culture, who usually evaporate quickly from our memories.

To a surprising degree, however, he has managed to survive in the national consciousness, and not just as a corporate logo but as a kind of cultural barometer. Ask just about anyone how he or she feels about Disney and you are likely to get either a beaming, misty-eyed tribute from those who recall him fondly and enjoy his animations and theme parks, or a scowling, brow-furrowed denunciation from those who see him as the great Satan of modern mass culture.

Disney doesn't leave much room for anything in the middle. Even now he essentially cleaves the culture between the hoi polloi and elites, between those who willingly surrender to his wiles and those who seem hellbent on resisting them.

As University of Texas professor Douglas Brode has pointed out in his recent book, "From Walt to Woodstock," Disney's values, especially as evinced in his films, are much more complex and even contradictory than either his fans or his enemies admit. His values are not traditional conservative American. On the contrary, Disney's films challenged authority, disdained the acquisition of money, abhorred hypocrisy (including religious hypocrisy), promoted tolerance and community and celebrated rebelliousness. (Just see how Davy Crockett challenges Andrew Jackson in the 1950s TV programs, or how Pollyanna scolds her own minister for his intolerance.)

In his own life, Disney denounced what he called "billboard patriotism," and he looked askance at organized religion — all of which means that both sides got him wrong.

This should have been perfectly evident to anyone who wanted to see it, but most people seem to have preferred refracting Disney through their own prism. And, to be frank, Disney invited this by purveying the now-familiar image of an everyman and even indulging in some anti-intellectualism himself by insisting that he made corny films because people liked corn.

Yet it is in Disney's odd combination of libertarianism and liberalism, optimism and cynicism, nostalgia and futurism, faith and doubt that one may find not only the real man but the real America he represented.

After 40 years, Walt Disney is not either/or — the best or the worst. He is both the best and the worst — not the polarizing center of cultural warfare but a portent of the truce between high and low

A lengthy read, worth the effort.

What happens to a children’s public television show after it has been attacked by the secretary of education, pilloried by conservatives, then abandoned by its underwriters? In the case of “Postcards From Buster,” it manages to return, belatedly but unbowed, for a second season.

“We were proud of ‘Postcards From Buster,’ and we are proud of ‘Postcards From Buster,’ ” said Brigid Sullivan, vice president for children’s programming at WGBH, the Boston PBS station that produces the show. “It’s a children’s show dealing with diversity by showing real kids in real-life situations. That’s not being done by anyone else.”

In “Postcards From Buster” documentary footage of children from different cultures is combined with animation of Buster and his friends. This season includes only 10 episodes, which began in November and will run through February, a far cry from the 40 produced for the show’s first season.

I thought that in the case of the Kim family the sign and markings had been vandalized allowing them access to a normally closed area.

The big event of my day....my mom, my aunt and I went to the First Baptist Church for lunch.  As I recall, I was told there was a man who goes around preparing lunch and doing a little program.

Well....we ate ham, green beans, corn, mashed potatoes, bread and banana pudding.  Took roughly 50 minutes to serve, eat and enjoy.

The "little program", however, was two more hours (!!!) consisting of a lengthy musical tape recording, a saxophone, various/sundry odd props, the man (a preacher!) and his 5-year-old son (you've NEVER seen a 5-year-old THAT well-behaved).

I've surmised the man is a frustrated entertainer ... wants to be a singer and wants to be a preacher man.  Has a tenor of modest range and quality....nice high register, though.

He's a good cook.

I still listen to the album now and then (thus the response to TOD) . I wish it was on CD. I hum New York From The Air every time I fly into or out of New York.  I love all of it.

I saw that show and loved every minute of it.  It has two of the most beautiful New York songs ever written.

New York From the Air is  a beautiful song, but Tuscaloosa's Calling Me But I'm Not Going is really much more of a love song to New York.  I think it's my favorite from the show.

And a musical about politics, I don't have the album in front of me, but its songs included:

and

Evening all.  I just had to stop in and say, "Happy Birthday!" to not one but two (count'em TWO) very dear readers, PennyO and Dan-The-Man!!!  Hurrah!

I'm sorry that it's so late in the day but I had to drive into work today and I had something very unexpected happen when I got home from work.

I was late because I had to make an hour of time up from this morning.

The dogs were starving so I got the first dish down for Sheena.  I went back to get the next dish for Bear and in that time they had a fight.  The next thing I knew, poor Bear had a rip in his ear.  I called the vet right away and even though they were about to close, they told me to bring him in right away.

He has to have surgery on his ear.  I'm scared to death because of his age and size.  I've been warned he might not make it.

I'm going to be on pins and needles until I hear something tomorrow.

Please send some HHW vibes for my Old man.  I don't know what I'll do if he doesn't make it.

I don't blame Sheena.  Accidents happen and I don't think she meant to hurt Bear.

I watched the rest of the episodes on the POLICE SQUAD DVD. They're all hilarious. The producers were smart enough to have some running jokes going from show to show and to embellish them when they started to wear out their welcomes.

DVD affords us the opportunity to notice little details: writing on posters that's ridiculous and the face of a clock in the police station with the numbers in the wrong places.

I'm not sure the episodes are in the order they were shot or shown on ABC. One running gag at the end of each show summarizes the crooks that they've sent to "Statesville Prison," and in the third episode on the disc, the list includes the names of all the crooks in the remaining three episodes plus the first three on the disc.

At any rate, if you're a fan of AIRPLANE! and want to see that comedy motif applied to Quinn Martin style police procedurals (without the occasional dead spots that are in the three NAKED GUN movies), POLICE SQUAD is for you.

DR Danise---

This may sound lame, but when I had pet troubles and couldn't sleep, I visited a chat room at  Petloss.com
http://www.petloss.com/newchat.htm
The people there are very compassionate. The new people there have recently lost pets or have ill or injured pets. The people with a "wolf" suffix to their names (I am "Artywolf") are veterans of the site who are there to offer support, advice and words of comfort. They were a big help to me when I my ancient kitty was ailing and it was late but I wanted to talk to someone. Just thought I'd share that with you...didn't mean to put it on the board but your inbox was full and I'm about to get on my way home from work.

I looked at all the special features on the POLICE SQUAD disc as well. There's a gag reel that's typical of the kind of verbal flubs that are so common on shows where everyone must talk and talk and talk (often gibberish but keeping a straight face).

The interview with Leslie Nielsen was OK, but his memory for details was spotty. Of course, it HAS been over 20 years ago that he did these six episodes.

I listened to one commentary (of the pilot), but it wasn't very enlightening and stopped about about 10 minutes. Mainly they sat around laughing at their creation without providing much background. Only an occasional bit of info would come out but would get generally lost in the guffaws of the surrounding members of the team.

I did watch the BONES rerun tonight, a repeat of the season opener where the new boss of the Jerrsonian was introduced. The case involving a suspected murder of a senator was adequate but no more. The interplay between the characters was much more important in this episode than the mystery this week.

And the CSI: MIAMI rerun was probably this season's best show thus far involving the murder of a cop who was undercover in a biker gang. My favorite character on the show, Calleigh, was the focus of this episode, and I always enjoy the episodes where she's in the spotlight.

Particularly the part when they are strategizing around the conference table and the new boss says "And when my people testify..." and all most all of the team chimes in "But not Zach"!

Of course, in last week's episode, it was explained why Zach wasn't used in court, and the aftermath of that realization once he had earned his doctorate. Nice little reminder tonight that his appearance to the outside world was recognized as a detriment by the team.

Joe Barbera, half of Yogi Bear creator team, dies at 95  (http://presstelegram.com/ci_4862307)

Quote
LOS ANGELES - Joe Barbera, half of the Hanna-Barbera animation team that produced such beloved cartoon characters as Tom and Jerry, Yogi Bear and the Flintstones, died Monday, a Warner Bros. spokesman said. He was 95.

Barbera died of natural causes at his home with his wife Sheila at his side, Warner Bros. spokesman Gary Miereanu said.

With his longtime partner, Bill Hanna, Barbera first found success creating the highly successful Tom and Jerry cartoons. The antics of the battling cat and mouse went on to win seven Academy Awards, more than any other series with the same characters.

Tomovoz and Elmore, I actually SAW the original WINDY CITY show in London back in '82.  I was not overwhelmed.  Hence I did not buy the album and remember little about the show, except that Dennis Waterman of MINDER and Anton Rodgers were in it.  I still have the program somewhere.

Happy B'day Penny-O.  I'm like several cuts from CAN HIEROYMOUS MERKIN FORGET MERCY HUMPPE AND FIND TRUE HAPPINESS.  And I, of course, love the O'Toole CHIPS in spite of its score...with the exception of LONDON IS LOVE & WALK THROUGH THE WORLD WITH ME.

Back from a very long day - we really wrapped the session in a very timely way at five, but we had major synth problems (our regular player wasn't available for the session, so a new guy, very nice, did it, but wasn't as familiar with the music as he should have been, and he wasn't able to make all the fast patching switches - which meant we had to stay five extra hours and overdub eighty percent of what he'd recorded).  We went wildly overbudget and that is very, very bad.  But, we got it done, and I think it's going to mix very well - much of elmore's wonderful orchestrations were sort of buried in the theater mix, so I heard things that I've never heard.  Alet, Merrill, Kevin, and Lauren all did excellent work today.
