In OpinionJournal Political Diary, John Fund reports that the Atlas Shrugged movie is coming along: He titles the piece "Porn for College Republicans."
It was published almost 50 years ago, and has sold millions of copies. But only now is Ayn Rand's controversial individualist novel "Atlas Shrugged" about to become a movie starring Angelina Jolie.
Ed Hudgins, editor of the New Individualist, tells me that the screenplay adapting the 1,100-page epic novel is only a couple weeks away from completion. Production is set to begin next year with the release of the film in 2008.
Mr. Hudgins says fans of Atlas should be pleased that the adaptation is being authored by Randall Wallace, the scriptwriter for "Braveheart," Mel Gibson's epic tale of Scottish freedom fighters. "I was fascinated by Rand's book. It was original and provocative," Mr. Wallace told Daily Variety.
For her part, Ms. Jolie has told friends that she finds the character of Dagny Taggart the most powerful female role she can imagine playing. While Ms. Jolie adheres to conventional liberal politics, she is nonetheless a big fan of Rand's sweeping story-telling abilities.
Originally, the plan of producers Howard and Karen Baldwin was to follow the example of the makers of J.R.R. Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings," and adapt Rand's sprawling work into a three-part movie. But they were finally convinced that the story should be seen at one sitting, albeit at great length. I guess that means that the speech by anti-collectivist hero John Galt -- which runs to 72 pages in the novel -- will have to be trimmed just a bit.

I have a question for any and all...and a favor. The question is: does anyone have the 2-CD set, "Cabaret Noel: A Broadway Cares Christmas (http://broadwaycares.stores.yahoo.net/cdh004.html)" with Christmas and other holiday songs performed by a whole bunch of wonderful singers? If anyone does, here's my favor...could someone make an MP3 of the song, "Wishing You a Drag Queen Christmas," sung by B.D. Wong and e-mail it to me?
I have this CD but it's buried somewhere in my storage unit. I originally wanted to make copies of this song for the four other Drag Queen Indians in Cannibal: The Musical as a closing night gift. Very appropriate, don't you think? ;) But with everything that was going on over the last few weeks, I wasn't able to get to my storage unit to look for my CD and I wasn't able to make the CD for the guys before we closed the show. However, I'd still like to do it, so if anyone can e-mail me the song, I'd greatly appreciate it. If not, that's okay. I didn't tell anyone that I was going to do it, but hopefully, with help from my fellow HHWers, it can still happen. :D

Well I'm up in what seems to be the middle of the night, but is actually 5:30 am. It's over 32 so our freezing rain is just rain...alas, that means I'll be going to the office this morning. I'm awake very early, though, so I'm about to make pancakes and a big pot of coffee and do some things around the house.

Good morning, all! I had strange dreams about The Brain last night, and wen I awaoke at 6 am, I figured enough was enough. I have to be at the Post Office with the last of my packages early and then I have a trek to Toyland, so I'll be the proverbial early bird.
I called my dad to check on him last night, and he sounded happy and not at all distressed as he had yesterday morning. My biggest concern, beyond my anger at Macbeth's making him feel impotent and humiliated, was that it would effect his health.
Given all that's going on in my family and assuming that my dad's health will prevent his being around next Christmas, this will probably be the last year I give the Macbeths a gift. I've assembled a tasteful and thoughtful gift of several musical trade magazines that will arrive periodically over the year, but I wanted them to have something to open this week, so I put together a package of issues of all the subscriptions they will receive, and I'll mail it this morning.
Now, if I just knew for certain I have a job after Dec. 31 . . .

I think you will like The Devil Wears Prada or as it is called in Russia The Devil Wears Pravda. It is an amusing triffle and rises and falls on Meryl Streep being on screen.
The Lady in The Water is the film that M. Knight however you spell his last name that he finally crashed and burned. Each film after tThe Sixth Sense got worse and worse. I didn't have to see The Village because I knew what the "twist" without seeing the film. I think his ego finally did him. He burned his bridges with Disney after they cancelled the production (I believe they didn;t like the script) and he went elsewhere.
The film was the big bomb of the summer and there was even a book written about it. (Not sure if this was a commercial tie in) From what I understand it doesn;t paint him in a nice light or night.

AND NOW FOR SOME Mel Gibson news,
His film is on the way to be a flop. Even though it opened with 20 million at the box office in its second week it went from #1 to #6 earning just $8 million. I think after this weekend it will just be a blip. It willl not earn back its $40 million negative cost and whatever they did on advertising and promotion.
This shows I believe that people have turned away from Mel Gibson after he showed his true colors earlier this year. The people who have seen this movie because the were curious to see what Gibson had done and not because of the quality.
I think he will have trouble financing his next film unless he uses his own money to have it produced.

I have hard about it but I have not seen it yet. Matt Ashford just got done filming a movie with E.G. DAily, who was the voice of Baby Mumbles in Happy Feet. The movie Matt did with Daily is called "The Unlikely's".

I liked Devil Wears Prada... I also liked Prairie Home Companion. DBF Jon rented both movies over the weekend and we watched them. He has rather good tastes in movies .... most of the time.

Wednesday morning greetings! This is my last (shortened - I'm leaving at 4pm) workday until a week from today. I am so ready to be home Christmas-cocooning with my family. Not that it's restful - I have many packages to wrap and much baking & other cooking to do - but I'm looking forward to it.
Last night I got one of my Christmas wishes - an invitation to be somebody else's company for Christmas dinner. We're going to the home of DH Richard's younger brother in Cincinnati. His son is an Air Force search and rescue helicopter pilot and will be at his parents' for a week. He has had 2 tours overseas, one in Iraq and one in Afghanistan, and we will be very glad to see him.

Airing on the Fox Movie Channel at the moment: Otto Preminger's "The Fan"...an adaptation (by three writers, including Dorothy Parker) of "Lady Windemere's Fan."
I'd never heard of this film until this moning.

Terribly sorry you're so down on Shyamalan. You may be surprised to learn there are some of us who consider "Unbreakable" and "Signs" outright masterpieces.
What is unique about him, though, is that he takes creative gambles. He's quite extraordinary compared to the mediocrities running rife in Hollywood, mass marketing frippery and horrid remakes of better films.
I wish folks would think more kindly of his sort of risk-taking because his films are imminently watchable and interesting whether you figure out the twists in advance or not.

I'm looking at the pond behind my mom's house right now (it's rather close, so it's at least one-third of the view)...the surface is very rippled, and the ducks look as if they are enjoying themselves.

Unbreakable, yes. Signs wasn't as effective for me.
The "problem" has more to do with people's expectations of Shyamalan - after Sixth Sense audiences wanted him to have the "twist" at the end. Unbreakable didn't twist, not really, so the audiences started saying "Well, I saw that one coming." Instead of letting him be a storyteller, they demand that he tell a specific type of story, over and over.
My hunch is that, once he breaks free of this pigeonholing, Shyamalan will become a highly regarded filmmaker. If he can break free, that is.
Remember, it took Brian DePalma quite a while to break free from the expectations his audiences built up during his "Hitchcock" period.

I enjoyed THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA, but had I seen it in its theatrical run this summer before the premiere of UGLY BETTY on TV, I might have flipped more for PRADA.
BETTY has many parallels to PRADA, but it has the advantage of a continuing storyline and characters that can grow richer with each passing week.
I'll eventually see LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE when I comes on one of the pay cable channels.

Atlas Shrugged and Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
I've heard about Atlas Shrugged, at least I've heard the title, but I didn't know what the book is about until I checked over at Wikipedia. The geniuses of the world go on strike, and run off and disappear?
The moment I read that, it reminded me of Douglas Adams' more elegant solution to the same problem, found in both the novel The Restaurant at the End of the Universe and the television series The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. There, instead of the geniuses running away, they admitted that their society was made up of three components: first, the brains of the operations (themselves); second, the people who actually got the work done; and third, everyone else - the market researchers, hair stylists, public telephone sanitizers, that sort of stuff. And, since so much was being wasted on the third group, the third group was blasted off on a colonizing ship, convinced that they were to settle a new home planet in preparation for the other two groups that would follow in two other ships (they never did, of course, and never had intended to, but were instead wiped out by a plague that was caught from an unsanitized public telephone). The planet that the third group eventually colonized was, of course, Earth.
None of this is to be found in the film version of Hitchhiker's Guide, which was mainly notable for it's creation of a race of villainous aliens that all looked remarkably like Charles Laughton.

I think "Unbreakable" is a fascinating character study of a man who truly wonders why he isn't dead...and who realizes his family means more to him than he knew. It has layers upon layers.
"Signs" moves me in so many ways....I know folks think the premise of aliens "invading" is silly, but they're truly not the point of the film, IMO. I love the whole "signs" aspect...the things Gibson's wife told him before she passed...the wonderful kids and their personalities...the brother (one of Joaquin Phoenix's most endearing creations). The shot of the kids and Phoenix sittting on the sofa wearing aluminum foil hats is priceless.

Jane Krakowski's name caught my attention and I remember seeing her on television back in the 80s on the soap "Search for Tomorrow". Actually she had a few scenes, if I remember correctly with Matt ashford.

Have you watched the extra "Rules and Clues" contained on the Collector's Edition DVD? It will make you rewatch the entire film just to follow the craftsmanship.
I enjoyed "Signs", much more so than "The Village"; following along with Woody's comment on "expectations", I suspect that if "Signs" had been the first release of a new filmaker it would have been greeted with raves.

Because I needed something tactile and not too cerebral to do here at work today, I decided to get a head start on a book display for February. My theme is
"I (heart) Books"
so I did a title keyword search in our online catalog for heart*. That brought up a couple thousand titles that have heart, hearts, heartland, heartwarming, etc. in the title. After sorting it so that the most recent items appeared first, I went through about 500 entries and printed those that fit into my display. I have fiction, biographies, African-American, travel, career, holiday, and general nonfiction from all 10 Dewey classes except the 400s.
Now, I'm on the lookout for translucent, heart-shaped Post-It stickers. Any ideas? I figure the Valentine's Day stuff will probably begin appearing in the stores next Tuesday, so now I have a mission!

What are you favorite Spaghetti westerns and who are your favorite Spaghetti western performers.
I am partial to Richard Harrison's and Ken Clark's Italian cowboy romps and Gordon Mitchell always plays some fun bad guys in those films. I am curious to see some of Gordon Scott's in the near future.
GUNFIGHT AT RED SANDS is a favorite. I have not actually seen that many Spaghetti westerns, and I when I was a kid I detested them...they disturbed me...but I am now developing a taste for them (although the Clint Eastwood ones still don't appeal to me...yet).
I have a box set of 20 spaghetti westerns that I need to dig into one of these days.

I watched the game show IDENTITY again last night. Basically there are 12 people and 12 identities and the contestant has to guess which identity belongs to which person.
NBC is running every night this week. And it's hosted by Penn (of Penn & Teller).

You should really have a few unkind words with the people who did the original installation. I think it's disgusting that they let gas leak (endangering your life). But then when you asked if it was supposed to smell, they didn't even bother to check it out.
That's unacceptable and there must be someone you can contact about this.

BK question of the day.
What are you favorite Spaghetti westerns and who are your favorite Spaghetti western performers.
I am partial to Richard Harrison's and Ken Clark's Italian cowboy romps and Gordon Mitchell always plays some fun bad guys in those films. I am curious to see some of Gordon Scott's in the near future.
GUNFIGHT AT RED SANDS is a favorite. I have not actually seen that many Spaghetti westerns, and I when I was a kid I detested them...they disturbed me...but I am now developing a taste for them (although the Clint Eastwood ones still don't appeal to me...yet).
I have a box set of 20 spaghetti westerns that I need to dig into one of these days.
I'm fond of many spaghetti westerns and have written about them on this here site - I love the Dollars trilogy, especially For A Few Dollars More, I like the two Lee Van Cleef Sabata films, I like Ace High, I like Death Rides A Horse, I like Django, and many others.

I enjoyed three MEDIUM episodes this afternoon. The first was the famous 3-D episode. On the DVD,the show is presented in both 2-D and 3-D. 3-D glasses are provided in the package, but I still had the ones from the original program (and several other pairs from other TV 3-D presentations).
The 3-D worked very well on the DVD version. Enjoyed seeing it again.

Another involved the ghost haunting a couple in their home. The story was very sad, and I remember being shocked at the conclusion the first time I saw it.

The third episode of the afternoon involved Allison assuming the identity of a killer who carved designs into the faces and bodies of his victims. Another fabulous surprise ending.

I spent the remainder of the afternoon watching the Betty Grable film MOTHER WORE TIGHTS. It's always been my favorite Grable movie, and I burned a DVD of it from the Fox Movie Channel. No word from Fox that they have any plans to release it in the future, so I'm glad I have this.

I told him he might need to turn the unit on first.
I don't know, but maybe this is the first gas heater this company has ever installed...in their 30 years in business as a heater installation company.
Anyway, I won't have any heat tonight, but they promise me it will be fixed tomorrow.

Continuing my downloading of vintage Christmas LPs I just downloaded two Ray Charles Singers albums....and this one pictured is now among my favorite Christmas albums of all time....it is beautiful and so reminds me of my childhood! There rendition of Snowfall is (not to sound corny) mesmerizing!!!

Depends on his contract. If it's not a star, I'd assume the actor would be paid only for days worked, but I've been out of that loop for a while, so don't know if SAG rules have changed.

I've had a semi-lazy day.
I've been home alone most of the day. My mom returned at about 4 p.m. I was napping.
She's now gone to church until about 8 p.m.
I went out and bought gas for her van.
I washed two loads of clothes.
I put away a dishwasher full of clean dishes.
TV viewing has been pretty much of a wash. TCM and FMC have been dreadfully dull ALL DAY LONG. TCM, especially, with some really dreary movies from the 1930s.

I watched the game show IDENTITY again last night. Basically there are 12 people and 12 identities and the contestant has to guess which identity belongs to which person.
NBC is running every night this week. And it's hosted by Penn (of Penn & Teller).

I am very tired. Work has been totally crazy (busy-wise). The bad weather didn't hit today it just rained all day. Now we're expecting it tonight, so of course I have a hearing at 8:00 AM. It looks like I'll have to work all day Saturday, but I'm not heading to my folks until Sunday and I think I'd rather have the work done before I take the time off than to leave it hanging so I think about it all week.

Evening folks! You will be happy to know that once again, the healing vibes of HHW worked it's magic and my Bear came though the surgery with flying colors! Thank you all!!!! :-* :-*
He was groggy when I picked him up last night but you could tell that he was thrilled to be home.
While he was under, he had some other problems looked and an repaired--the warts were removed and they gave his eye a look but it was ok. All in all the bill came to over a thousand but worth every penny.
I was told how good a dog he is when I picked him up. The one guy couldn't get over how gentle he is. He said Bear didn't them one bit of trouble and didn't bark at all.
Mom was beside herself when I brought him home. She was so happy she cried.
Sheena was also glad to see him and tried to lick him all over.
Everything seems to be back to normal but I will keep a special eye on them when they are eating.
He is at my feet as I type this. Sheena is on the couch. Life is good. :) :D :)

I've been laying in bed trying to get to sleep, but I just realized I have way more to do at work than I have time to do it in and my head is spinning with things that need to be done. I haven't had this happen in a long time and while a part of me is irritated as hell about it, it's kind of nice to be really busy again.

I've just awakened from a two hour nap. I felt myself sliding into sleep and just closed down all the theater equipment rather than waste the lap in the TV and electricity for the other components.

I did manage to watch a film tonight. DODGEBALL, the unrated edition. Honestly, I didn't see anything in it that wasn't in the first released version of the film.

I did watch two MEDIUM episodes on disc 4 in the set.
The first was a return visit from that Victorian era "butcher doctor" who this time used Ariel to distract Allison from his true plan. Tense, upsetting episode.

The other dealt with a vision Allison had of a teenaged boy wiping out his entire school in an assault. She awoke to find that the child, actually age 7, was missing.
A very sad but ultimately fulfilling drama.

I also am enjoying my slow but steady trek through the book KATE. Though the author said the biography wasn't going to be a chronological history of the lady, it has pretty much been that way after the preface and opening chapter.
I've now gotten to the section on her infamous Broadway return in THE LAKE.

Oddly listening to a story on NIghtline about Los Angeles' obsession with a White Christmas and some places actually putting snow on display. Ironically, it will be our first christmas here in a number of years that we have had not snow.

The Adventure of the Chocolate Bar, the Underpants, and the Paper Plate
Preschool started off normal. Wednesday is chapel day, so instead of having circle time this morning, we went and heard about Baby Jesus, the shepherds, and the angels. Then we took some toys from the toy drive across the street to the food bank/ clothing bank/ whatever else bank run by the church the school is at. We sang one of our Christmas songs to the workers there and they gave the kids chocolate bars. Then we snaked back across the street to school, put the candy in the kids' cubbies, and washed up for snack.
After snack, my class (the three-year-olds) has playground time. The teacher takes her break for the first fifteen minutes, so that's when I am In Charge. *Cue ominous music* I was pushing the girls on the swings in turns and the boys were playing this game they invented called Bucket Chase. It involves running around with buckets and is very noisy. Every once in a while, I would do a quick head count to make sure everyone was present, accounted for, and relatively uninjured. Three girls and five boys. One of the boys, Cameron-- the "ganch" from Halloween ("ganch" being Cameronian for "skunk")-- came over and asked me (in fluent Cameronian) to push him on the swings. I told him I would push him after Ashton, whose turn came after Toni's. So he waited while I pushed Toni and then Ashton. Then Toni wanted me to take her across the monkey bars. That only takes a few seconds, so I told Cameron I would push him after that. After I got Toni across, I did another head count. Toni was by the monkey bars, the other two girls and Cameron were on the swings, and Brandon, Brody, and Stephen were playing Bucket Chase. That's seven kids. I was missing one.
I asked the kids if they knew where Owen was and they said no. So I told Cameron I had to find Owen and would push him later. Usually when you can't find a kid it's because he or she is behind the playhouse, even though they know they're not allowed back there. So I looked behind the playhouse. Owen wasn't back there. He also wasn't inside the playhouse or in the tunnels or in the fort under the slide where the boys like to hang out. I looked in the bathroom, and he was in one of the stalls, even though he knows he's supposed to ask first. Owen is developmentally delayed and he has trouble with some things, so I asked him if he was okay, and he said he was, so I went out to go push Cameron on the swings. But before I could do that, I had to help Brandon and Stephen untangle the wagon from a tricycle for their post-Bucket Chase lap around the bike path. Then the girls wanted hula hoops (or "hoopah hoops") from the shed where we stash the toys. After we got all that straightened out, I went back to the bathroom to check on Owen.
Here this turns into a potty story, so if you plan on consuming chocolate or lemonade in the near future, you might want to stop reading.
Anyway, I got into the bathroom, and there was Owen, standing out in the middle of the bathroom, with his shoes, pants, and underpants on the floor in front of him instead of on him where they belong. Luckily, his shirt reached down to his thighs, otherwise I would have to gouge out my eyes and run off the nearest cliff. I asked him what had happened and he told me he had wet his pants. He does this every once in a while, so he knows the routine. Take off your shoes, pants, and underpants and Cassandra (I'm not sure why they call me that) will get you a clean set of clothes.
So I told Cameron I would push him in just a little while, and went and got Owen's spare clothes. I'm not supposed to spend much time in the bathroom when I'm the only one on playground duty because I need to watch the other seven kids. So I gave Owen his clean pants and underpants and a plastic bag to put the dirties in and went back out to the playground. I was on my way to the swings where Cameron was still waiting patiently, but first I had to have a little talk with Stephen about why he needs to stay sitting on his tuchas (the new word I taught them-- they're very fond of it) while he's riding in the wagon. Then I went to go check on Owen again. He was standing in the middle of the bathroom, still bottomless, with his underpants on his head, and eating the chocolate bar he'd gotten earlier that morning. Only I didn't realize it was chocolate because that was supposed to stay in his cubby and I thought I was looking at something really disgusting. Then I saw the empty candy wrapper, and I have to say I was relieved.
I took the underpants off his head, made him put down the chocolate, and forced him into his underpants and pants. Oy. Luckily, he kept his shirt down. Then we washed our hands and went back to the playground. Cameron was still sitting there, waiting patiently. I pushed him on the swings an extra-long time.
After we got back into the classroom, we colored some pictures, and then it was time for lunch. Lunch today was bologna sammintses, which many of you know by the name "sandwiches." As usual, Kayla only ate the outside of her sammints and pointed to the cheese and bologna on her plate and said what she says every day at lunch: "I don't like this, Cassandra." Somehow, that always leads to the kids calling me Chicken-Head. I told them to settle down and eat their lunches. Along with their sammintses, they had carrot and celery sticks, cucumber, pear slices, and tomato soup. They ate the sammintses pretty well, except Kayla but that's normal for her. And they ate the pears and some of the soup. They even choked down some of the carrot sticks because I call them bunny rabbits when they do and they like that. But they wouldn't eat their celery. I really want them to eat their vegetables and I have found a way to make sure they do.
It all started this one time Kayla, queen of the picky eaters, wouldn't eat any of her lunch. I told her to eat her celery and she said, "YOU eat YOUR celery!" I said, "I did," and I showed her my empty plate. She said, "Eat your plate!" I said, "What?" She said, "Eat your plate, Cassandra!" I said I would eat a bite of my paper plate if she ate all her celery. I didn't think she would actually eat her celery, you see, because we'd been arguing back and forth about that celery for half an hour. She had that stick of celery scarfed down in seconds. Paper plate is a lot like tofu. It's chewy and it doesn't really taste like anything, but it goes down easily. She had the time of her life watching me eat that thing. Well worth the celery she had to gag down.
"Eat your plate, Cassandra!" has become Kayla's other catchphrase, in addition to "I don't like this, Cassandra." So today, when I told them to stop calling me Chicken-Head and eat their lunches, Kayla said (all together, now), "Eat your plate, Cassandra!" I said I would eat a bite of my plate if each kid ate at least one stick of celery. You wouldn't believe how they gobbled those things down. Then they all gathered around me and watched me eat my papery dessert.
So that was my day. Don't tell me I'm not dedicated.

And I'm worried about what will happen when we serve celery on the styrofoam plates we use with heavy or wet food. I had a foster kitten who used to eat styrofoam, so I know it can be done. But I don't think I'm ready for that kind of commitment.

Back from another recording session for The Brain - this time we went over about an hour - another overage that doesn't exactly thrill me as the studio and Vinnie don't come cheap. The ensemble vocals took longer than I'd hoped, mostly because the kids haven't sung in a studio before and there were a lot of pitch problems that we had to take care of. We got behind, and then there was pressure to get Kevin and Alet out of there. I'll tell more in the notes.
