Well, you've read the notes, the notes were feeling the Christmas spirit and it, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently feeling the Christmas spirit and it.
-
And the word of the day is: BEDIZEN!
-
I'm hoping whatever maintenence they've been doing will not happen this morning - that would be most unseemly.

Did you know that the total number of postings on this board (for all topics) is now over 250,000?

Ever since we've split up the number of topics into subgroups, it's been very confusing. I must have missed the post that alerted me to the upcoming landmark, but a landmark it is and we should all dance an Irish Jig or a Polish Polka in honor of it.

Only sixty posts or so until 22,000 postings.

Right now, on the Showtunes digitial music channel, Jeanne Lehman is singing "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes," from the "Jerome Kern Treasury" CD. Jeanne Lehman was a very close friend of my friend Nona, who died a couple of years ago. :(

WheW! Couldn't get on the board before work yesterday, so I find 18 pages - the rest of Friday and a HUGE Saturday!
Great work!
DR JMK has a new gig and the spaghetti sauce is cooking. It must be December the 24th (a SCROOGE reference.)
I am working today - we open two hours earlier than usual on Sunday - but when I return tonight I will be watching A CHRISTMAS CAROL, courtesy of DR ELMORE....a ballet that I am anticipating with much pleasure.

Good morning, all! I've just listened to the wonderful. "A Ceremony of Carols" and now The Western Wind is singing a collection of carols. I'm on my second cup of coffee and contemplating what to do with the day besides wrap gifts and drag out some holiday DVDs.
I have a bit of Toyland work to do here on organizng my libretto report, and I need to purchase more coffee. I also have to call my dad and check on him. I've begun reading Carl Hiaasen's new novel NATURE GIRL.
Yesterday, when the site was down, my unhappiness at the inability to connect with a bunch of wonderful friends from all over the globe showed me how important you all are to my daily existence. Oh, god, I sound needy! Since it's Christmas Eve, I will extend my wishes to each and every one of you for a safe, wonderful, and healthy holdiay season.

THE HORA OF MENSA - wasn't that a Woody allen story from years back?

Chanukkah ends and Christmas begins almost immediately after that - my kind of year

Good morning, fellow Dear Readers.
I propose that those of us who have them should post a photo of our Christmas Trees.
-
Christmas Eve morning greetings! Back to baking for me - today it's 2 pumpkin pies and a pecan for tomorrow's gathering in Cincinnati. This afternoon we're having a small celebration with my mom and my aunt here at our house. The menu: Honey Baked ham, cheesy potatoes, green beans, apple salad, ice cream & cookies.
While baking this morning, I'll listen to the live broadcast of the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols from King's College in Cambridge. It starts in about 20 minutes.
-
Good morning, dear virtual friends.
We are here on the Isle of Long preparing to celebrate Christmas. We took the train out yesterday (and waved to Vixmom and crew and William F. Orr and Joe as we passed through the Deer Park area). We finished some last minute errands, had a wonderful dinner of shrimp creole and now I'm about to remove a bloated, user-unfriendly program from the computer (Norton Anti-Virus) and replace it with a better, more user-friendly and, best of all, free program called Spyware Terminator.
I won't be on much until we get back to the city, either Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday morning, Mr. Morelli hasn't decided yet when we will leave. But I did want to say Happy, Merry and everything else to our group of virtual and real friends. I can taste BK's sauce even without being there.
Hugs and kisses to you all. We don't have a picture of the Long Island tree so I can't post it and our picture of the tree in NYC is, surprise, in NYC so if I remember I'll do it when we return.
TTFN (or Ta Ta For Now)

Happy Christmas Eve to all.
-
Happy Sunday, too!
-
It's another pretty day, but that should change this afternoon and evening as another storm front moves in with rain.
We expect showers overnight and tomorrow.
-
Good Morning dear Esteemed BK--
A very warm Christmas Eve wish to you, and all of the very best wishes and vibes are sent to each and every one of the wonderful Dear Readers and friends here at HHW.
Enjoy this day to the fullest, and everything in it. We don't know what lies around the corner, but we can take the time to enjoy the moment we are in and to treasure it.
Thank you Bruce, for creating this unique, crazy, and magical place where friends have been made and laughter and tears have been shared.

Today is "JOY" day at our house. At least for me.
Today is the day my mom fries me some chicken.
I love my mom's fried chicken.
My mom can FRY some chicken!
-
My mom, aunt and I spent several hours yesterday afternoon and evening playing Scrabble.
Normal Scrabble for a few games, and then Super Scrabble for a couple of games.
We all won a game of each version, so we're copasetic.
Are any of you copasetic?

We are going to my cousin Debra's house for Christmas Eve dinner.
We always go to Debra's.
Sometimes we have pork loin, sometimes we have barbecued chicken. We have had hamburgers. Two years ago, I made spaghetti sauce and took it to her house for our dinner.
This year we will eat steak.
Let them eat steak, I always say.
What do you always say?
-
I have no Christmas tree picture this year,......
........however...............
.... as this IS HHW..................
I thought I'd share this picture I call "dreidl Pup." It is just as cute as any tree!
-
Fortunately, when one goes to Debra's house, one need not get tarted up.
No need to bedizen oneself for the occasion. A pair of jeans, a flannel shirt and a baseball cap gets you immediate seating and a "Howdy-do"!
We are an eclectic group here in Johnston SC. Fine Victorian homes, exquisite antiques, and deer processing sheds all on the same street.
-
[size=6
][move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]"Howdy-do", we've reached page 2![/move][/size][/color]

I needs must go bedizen myself for church. I'm meeting my mom and aunt at the First Baptist Church of Johnston SC for a Christmas Eve "preachin'".
I can endure a "preachin'" -- and there's fried chicken afterwards. I can endure anything for my mom's fried chicken.
-
I'm glad to see that the seasonal lull that normally happens here hasn't happened.
This season, we are family.
-
And here's one for Marley...and here's to wassailing...and egg nog...and spaghetti at BK's house...and excited kids...and excited adults...and overexcited eccentric adults...and one and all.

Good morning!
Another gorgeous day, but rain is predicted for tomorrow (and colder temperatures, too). Still, I will enjoy the pretty day that we've been given today.
-
I echo DR Elmore's sentiments about the inability to log on yesterday and the resultant feelings of frustration and confusion.
One gets into a ritual of checking in at certain times each day and getting the latest "scoop" on what familiar denizens are doing each day. When that comfort level is denied, one experiences feelings of withdrawal, like a dear friend who has suddenly gone incommunicado for no good reason.
Just made me realize how much I've grown to care for so many folks here. Not a bad thing to have happen, particularly at this time of year.
-
Merry Christmas eve morning to all!
I've just finished watching "The Bells of St. Marys".
Sheena was barking at me and pulling my arm at about ten--the time we go to the dog park but it's ,raining on and off and I don' t think that Bear should go just now. I know she really wanted to go but I'll make it up to her.
I'm doing a first for our family with Christmas Eve dinner. I'm making a duck. I wanted to make a goose but when I saw how much theywere (the cheepest one was $25.00), I didn't want to take the chance that it might not be something Mom and I would like.
I've heard of roast duck with orange sause and it came with orange sause so I think that is how I shall make it.
I hope everyone is having a wonderful day!
-
I'm looking forward to some more CHristmas-themed movies today. I also got BEST FOOT FORWARD, PRESENTING LILY MARS, and the HARDY BOYS DVD set yesterday, and I'm thinking of watching one of those, too, probably the Hardy Boys.
-
Guess I'll head down now to read more in KATE and then begin preparing some lunch.
WBBL.

Pies are baking - now it's time to ice those cookies!

MattH, thanks so much about remembering "Life After Tomorrow". My client who is the big "Annie" fan will love it!
We're taking her to the new Cirque show as one of her Hannukah presents. She's never been to see them. I usually take my nieces and nephews and various sets of parents but somehow I'm looking forward to our date with our "Cirque Virgin" more than anything. The new show, "Corteo" is supposed to be their best in many years. (I wasn't bowled over by the last two...)

Der B...love the dog pix!
No trees here. 4 young cats and a flammable tree next to a gas spacce heater do not mix. Maybe next year, when we have a house with central heat, we'll start tree experimentation.

SAVE THE WORLD FROM FRANKENTREES!

BK, thanks for watching our film! I don't like video special effects as are overused today. If the material can't stand on its own, I don't want to work on it. It's even more important to be straightforward with historical material to keep it timeless, which also gives it a good shelf-life!
The film was a real communal effort, with material ranging from beautiful 35mm like Li Liu's interview about leading the students in singing the song on Tiannemen Square, which was given to us by Sting's wife, Trudy, to Yehoshua, who shot his own interview on a kibbutz in Israel on PAL VHS and sent his memories to us.
Many of the people in the film have passed on, which is always one of the sad parts about making historical documentaries; the people you grow to know and love who are soon gone. We've already lost 4 people in our Sacco and Vanzetti film.
DVD cover blurb: "filled with fascinating people saying interesting things"!

After I chop garlic, chop onions, and slice mushrooms I shall deal with the other ingredients and then put them all in a big pot, at which point I will turn on the fire on the stove and begin cooking the sauce slowly or, to put it another way, I will start slowly cooking the sauce.

With all that talk about John Barrowman yesterday and the photos posted reminded me of the photo that I cannot post of him on this site. (This is a family site in more ways than one) Let's just say it involves a hamburger, hamburger buns and something else special that one normally would not find on top of a hamburger. and if you did the restaurant would probably been shut down. Unless of course you washed it first.

The fried chicken was WON-der-ful.
We also had mashed taters, corn-and-tomato casseroile, field peas and rolls.

And a happy holiday to DR Cason and Everybody on this Wonderful Site!
I've finished listening to an excellent new recording of a replication of the original Dublin performance of the great and gay George Frideric Handel's MESSIAH. The recording is by a new group from Scotland, the Dunedin Consort. It's quite a wonderful, and non-tradiitonal, performance since there are so many MESSIAH variants one never hears because the standardized text omits them.
And now, errands.

DR MattH's comment about new DVDs reminded me that I hope to find waiting for me the new Disney "tins" and the "Best Foot Forward" and "Presenting Lily Mars," as well as the CDs I ordered of "Amahl and the Night Visitors."

And then there's the (tongue-in-cheek) Politically Correct Holiday Greeting:
Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit, our best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low-stress, non-addictive, gender-neutral celebration of the winter solstice holiday, practiced within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, or secular practices of your choice, with respect for the religious/secular persuasion and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all. We also wish you a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling and medically uncomplicated recognition of the generally accepted calendar year 2007, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make America great. Not to imply that America is necessarily greater than any other country nor the only America in the Western Hemisphere, and without regard to the race, creed, color, age, physical ability, religious faith or sexual preference of the wishes. By accepting these greetings you are accepting these terms. This greeting is subject to clarification or withdrawal. It is freely transferable with no alteration to the original greeting. It implies no promise by the wisher to actually implement any of the wishes for herself or himself or others, and is void where prohibited by law and is revocable at the sole discretion of the wisher. This wish is warranted to perform as expected within the usual application of good tidings for a period of one year or until the issuance of a subsequent holiday greeting, whichever comes first, and warranty is limited to replacement of this wish or issuance of a new wish at the sole discretion of the wisher.

DR Ron Pulliam, does your mom make good fried chicken?

I did have to go to the local market because I just felt I needed more butter. I probably had enough, but better safe than sorry - I also realized I only had one bottle of wine left, so I picked up two more for any drinkers.

Next came SCROOGE, the 1970 musical version. I loved it as I always do, but I wept more at the end of the film this year than I have in past viewings. I'm wondering if getting older myself doesn't have something to do with these sentimental old films affecting me so deeply nowadays.

I shall hopefully remember to take photographs of everything.

And one for Sauce.

After that I pulled MICKEY'S TWICE UPON A CHRISTMAS off the shelf. I've had it for years, but I've never watched it. The widescreen and DTS sound are superb. They've used computer animation as opposed to traditional drawing for the famous Disney characters. I could take that, but I don't care much for the new voices of Mickey, Minnie, or Daisy.
It's a multi-part story, and I only got through the first episode "Belles on Ice," where Minnie and Daisy compete to be the queen of skating. I'll finish it tonight.
-
I always confuse Hans Simmer with Jan Hammer.

Hi all!
I forgot about ecards. So thanks to the miracle of modern technology, I was able to send Christmas cards that were delivered on time! Hoo and Ray!
If you didn’t get one, it’s because I didn’t have an email address for you. Many apologies for that.
The duck looks like it's done. I'm not sure if I want to try it or not. I think I would rather have Bruce's sauce.

It's Christmas morning in the land of OZ. It will be our coldest Christmas day here since 1939. (No! I don't remember it - I was elsewhere). We have had blessed rain over night and today. Wonderful for our fire fighters who are still out there in the wilderness battling to save life and property.

In a very few minutes, I will be watching A CHRISTMAS CAROL, the Ballet! And yes DR derBRUCER....it may be choreography by Ballinchaines.
DR LAURA - I second your suggestion of TREE pics.....I don't have one myself, maybe that's why I like to see everyone else's.
The John Barrowman photo in question was verified on a couple of websites by those who would know.

Aww, too bad about the duck, Danise.
That's ok, DR Ginny. I didn't think I would like it but I just wanted to try something special for the night before Christmas. That's why I didn't plan on having it on the day of the Holiday.
Tomorrow will be the normal glazed ham, sweet potatos and salad. :D

I turned the heat off the sauce for now - it's doing beautifully, and now I let it just lay there like so much fish with a cover on the pot, then I turn on the heat again around four-thirty for its final ninety minutes.
Of course, I have no idea who's coming when or even how many - that part's always interesting.

I was thinking about the poor people who are stuck in Denver. You know that's where I changed planes to go to SLC to see Michael Ball a couple of years back.
I remember how excited I was because the pilot said there was snow! I couldn't wait to get to a window to see it but there was nothing. When I asked the lady at the ticket counter what happened she said I had missed it by about an hour.
I guess I should be glad that Michael Ball isn't having a concert in SLC now!
-
People I know will be here - The Pattis, Miss Deutsch and son, my friend Lee and her kids, Doug Haverty (at some point), former dear reader Maria and daughter, former dear reader Hisaka.
Probable attendees - Julie Stevens (director of Life After Tomorrow, which is on tonight and tomorrow on Showtime), agent Victoria Morris, local DVD store employee and actor/playright, Don Scribner.
Beyond that, who knows. Last year we had more people than ever - twenty-three, I think. I wouldn't like it if there were many more than that, but we shall see what we shall see.
-
I must have missed something, why "former dear readers" Maria and Hisaka?

Of course, I put out a Tennille CD on Bay Cities (and a good one it is), and I recorded many, many CDs at their studio Rumbo Recorders - it's not theirs anymore - have no idea who owns it or if it's even a studio anymore. I miss the lady who used to book there - Vicki Camblin.

Well, I tried to google J.B. and hamburger and came up with zilch that made sense........ so now i AM curious Michael! Any link??
-
Dear BK -- Have a terrific evening, and I will think lovingly of "Pasta in Studio City" ------ quite possibly even more exotic than "Chinese food in bed."
-
Well, the chestnuts are ready for tomorrow. Mom and I are going to watch, "A Christmas Story"--have a wonderful evening all!
-
I just watched the PBS broadcast of the Mormom Tabernacle Choir with Fredrica von Stade and Bryn Terfel, which I liked very much. The choral and orchestral arrangements, mostly by the Choir's MD were wonderful. as I watched, I opened all my Christmas cards, and tomorrow I'll open the three gifts I have sitting here.
Next up, a Russian DVD of NUTCRACKER, which looks rather terrifying in not a good way.

I think I lasted 20 minutes with the Bolshoi NUTCRACKER: it's sad watching young ladies play litle boys playing soldiers and the Nutcracker looks like a stuffed doll rather than a nucracker. The children in the Balanchine production for City Ballet are brilliant, and if the little boy who plays Fritz, the younger brother, is cute, funny and mean, he makes the first half of Act One a hoot. Balanchine (with Jerome Robbins' help) version created a masterpiece of wit, nostalgia, and beauty, not to mention inspiring the Christmas Nutcracker craze in every ballet company for the past 52 years. Onn the DVD the Bolshoi orchestra was wonderful, even with the luxury of two harps, but the staging and design were pathetic. The only other version I think is wonderful besides Balanchine's is Peter Wright's original production for the Royal Ballet in 1985, but his last production screwed it up.
Now, on to A CHRISTMAS CAROL ballet.
So, it's time to watch
-
Is the Balanchine on DVD?

DR ELMORE - the NBT A Christmas Carol was lovely.
My favorite dancer was Bob Cratchit - Scrooge was fine. Only thing I didn't like was Christmas Past's dance to "The Holly & the Ivy" - ugh.
And Scrooge's nephew certainly seemed to have a LOW center of gravity....didn't think he was ever going to get that caboose in the air..and he certainly didn't by much!

Costuming and makeup was some of the best I have seen for CAROL and for ballet.

DR TCB - I would have loved to have seen Lucci Ball do A CHRISTMAS CAROL.
-
Is the Balanchine on DVD?
It is, and it's not a bad presentation of the piece. The Waltz of the Flowers costumes with their shades of pink and rose are beautiful but Karinska's designs for everything are quite lovely, Robbins stages the battle between the toys and the mice, and it's a prelude to his PETER PAN work: a bit grotesque, abit frightening, and very funny.

I just watched it again to atone for the dismal Bolshoi NUTCRACKER. I cannot get the Bob Cratchit theme out of my head, and Davis uses it very nicely in different moments. The dancer playing Cratchit is married to the Ghost of Christmas Past. Didn't you like the scene between Young Scrooge and Belle (isn't that her name in the story)?
-
Jrand, condolences to you. How lucky you were to have her for twenty years.
The Lovely Wife, our Christmas visitor Mr. Drake, and I all just watched SCROOGE for the first time. I now know why we've been avoiding it all these years. This is Bricusse on his major downward slide...worse than the half-numbers in CHIPS (which somehow survives his deplorable song-writing and in which he manages at least a couple of decent tunes).
We have mostly a score of a half dozen numbers of about thirty seconds, full of cheesy, obvious rhymes of the me, the, be, see variety...none of which further elucidate either character or plot. To make matters worse, nobody can sing. Half the time you can only tell Albert Finney has started singing because the words suddenly (if badly) rhyme.
The songs basically slow down a story already moving at a sluggish pace thanks to the drudgery-like direction of Ronald Neame. To make matters even worse, Bricusse has written the script. Screenwriter's observation, Mr. Bricusse, your dubious dialogue does not improve on Mr. Dickens' own and it would've been wiser to have keep his and thrown out your "improvements". And what is that ridiculous "Hell" scene between Marley and Scrooge. Pee-hew!
And worst of all, Albert Finney, a usually terrific, actor, gives us a road-show third rate Scrooge with the stupidest damned voice I've ever heard. It's a community theatre "old man" performance. Scrooge looks like a stroke victim.
I need to watch Alistair Sim in the the 1951 Christmas Carol to get the rotten taste of this unemotional, uninvolving lump of Bricusse coal out of my mouth.
BK, may your Christmas Do do you proud, as always. Wish we could be there. I've got an odd-giftie all the way from London for you, but have yet to mail it out.
Merriest to all!

Yes that scene was lovely, and yes it's Belle - although the Fezziwig dance wasn't as lively as some of the other group stuff....I guess I have been spoiled by "December the 24th" in the SCROOGE movie which is as joyous as it should be.
Bob is married to the Holly & Ivy girl? Oh my....well...there you are.

Gee, I always liked "Scrooge." My older sister took me to see it when I was a kid.

Wow! I love SCROOGE...although I have some of your reservations as well...but considering the treatment the story has received in some circles, this version seems almost reverential.

I also love Scrooge and must say I think it is one of Bricusse's finer moments, compositionally (if not always lyrically) speaking. There are some positively Elgar-ian moments in that score (as there are, sporadically, in Chips) and I for one find it much more accomplished than Chips. Suzanne Neve may not be Julie Andrews, but she has a pleasant enough voice on "Happiness". The only cringe-worthy moment for me (and we tend to watch this every year) is Tiny Tim's song, which we have made into a family performance piece with all of us doing his hand motions simultaneously. :)
-
Oh....well...Tiny Tim....
-
Count me in as one who likes Scrooge!
-
I think one of my favorite New Yorker Cartoons had Scrooge dancing around with Tiny Tim on his shoulder, a big dinner spread on the table, and Bob Cratchit and his wife standing nearby.
She has her hands on her hips and says: "Well. I suppose we'll have to ask the old fool to stay for supper!"

I went to a party in Atlanta before going up to the mountains. I saw two friends who have been battling cancer. One has had what appears to be success with breat cancer treatments. The other was a stunning woman who could have passed for a super model, gorgeous tall blonde with a lovely British accent (she's from South Africa). She now weighs about 100 pounds and is extremely frail. It was shocking to see her like that. She was the head of a post house I used to do work at and was one of those people who seemed to have it all. It's really hard to believe.

well, I have to support DR CharlesPogue on SCROOGE; it's one of the films I found so repellent in the theatre that I never saw the end of it I think I beat a hasty retreat to Eighth Avenue sometime around the Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come! Give me Alistair Sim, George C Scott, Patrick Stewart, or Mr Magoo any time for acted CHRISTMAS CAROLS. I respect my friends' opinions on the Bricusse film but it ain't my cuppa.

Fortunately, TCM is now airing "Christmas in Connecticut" and it's the most "Christmasy" I've felt since arriving in these balmy, sultry parts 10 days ago.

I've been assured by several folks whose opinions I generally respect that "Scrooge" is the bees knees. I've not been able to watch it on TV airings...but I did buy it on DVD and am determined to sit through it...eventually...once I can work my way beyond the first 15 minutes of "The Passion."
-
Please, people watch the finely nuanced performance of Sim in the '51 Christmas Carol (sometimes re-dubbed Scrooge) and then watch Finney's he looks like he's doing a bad impression of a cross between that other Dickens character, Uriah Heep, and the Wicked Witch of the West. To okay jolly but lyrically mediocre numbers (I Like Life and Thank You Very Much) and a half-dozen half-completed songs that sound like that were dashed off the morning of shooting do not a musical make.
A good lyric should be inevitable but not predictable. We could recite most of Bricusse's rhymes before they were sung.
The only one to come close to Sim's definitive performance as Scrooge is George C. Scott in the TV version some years ago (and Mister Magoo, of course!)
-
DR JRand, my heart goes out to all who loved DK Kachina!
I'm sure she went out with love.
-
I stayed at the party too long, because there were so many people I wanted to talk to. So I was late getting to the mountains to see my Dad. Since I was only there for an hour and a half, I decided to go to church with him and his wife. He has never been a particularly religious guy, but he loves this church and its pastor.
I don't usually go to church, but I found this service very moving and everyone was thrilled to see my father there. It was quite an effort to get him there and people were touched that he'd made the effort to come there. Everyone in the church seemed to know him...it was a small church in the woods, packed to the gills. Everyone crowded around him and expressed their love for him. The pastor was extremely casual and made quite a few jokes. But his very brief sermon was about peace and extremely anti-war. This church does a lot of outreach for Habitat for Humanity, they send groups up to KY every year to help out coal miners' families, they do a tremendous amount for such a small church, and they didn't even take up a collection.
I don't go to church, as I said, but if they weren't so far away I would consider joining.
-
I adore SCROOGE, but I will agree with CP about the hell scene which was unneeded and brings the show to a screeching halt.
I saw it first at Radio City Music Hall and have loved it ever since. I think the score is a tonic (including "Happiness" which I think is one of the loveliest and most haunting ballads from an original musical ever), and Finney superb (so did the Hollywood Foreign Press who voted him Best Actor in a Musical in 1970).
-
Does anyone know for certain whether it's true that the song "People" (which of course ended up in FUNNY GIRL) was actually written by Jule Styne and Bob Merrill for MR. MAGOO'S CHRISTMAS CAROL?
-
I forgot Patrick Stewart. I have an excellent DVD of aone-man show he did of Christmas Carol. Is this the one to which you are referring , Elmore. Or is there another?
Ron, I'll be curious to get your opinion of Scrooge. Like Elmore, I had the urge to walk away but the three of us watching were having great fun riffing on it...and after even that paled, it was just sorta like watching a train wreck and you had to stay to the bitter end.
BK, we shall expect an abundance of photos of said Do!
-
When I played Bob Cratchit in a local production of SCROOGE, I had tears rolling down my cheeks every time my Tiny Tim sang in his sweet little voice "Beautiful Day."
-

Next I put in TALLADEGA NIGHTS. As someone who was brought up in the heart of NASCAR country, there was much for me to laugh at in this silly farce. Nope, not a great movie, but it's only trying for silly laughs, and it got them from me.
And there are some very able actors in the cast besides Will Ferrell: John C. Reilly, Jane Lynch, Gary Cole, Sasha Baron Cohan (who steals every scene he's in), Andy Richter, Michael Clarke Duncan.
-
Hmmm...from the imdb listing for MISTER MAGOO'S CHRISTMAS CAROL:
Trivia: The composers Bob Merrill and Jule Styne offered a song entitled "People" for the score but the animation had already been completed and it was too late to include it. Instead they added it to the score of a Broadway musical they were writing called "Funny Girl", where it became the first of many hits for the star, Barbra Streisand.
-
Next I watched a MEDIUM episode from the last disc in the set. This was the one with the blind girl sensing there was a stranger in the bedroom with her. I remember Allison's dreams totally confusing me the first time I saw this. Of course, on a revisit, things were much clearer.
-
Worst Christmas movie: "It Happened One Christmas"---a remake of "It's a Wonderful Life" with Marlo Thomas as a female George Bailey. Yuck!

MISTER MAGOO'S CHRISTMAS CAROL:
I would love to see that again. I used to enjoy watching it every Christmas!

Stewart did a TBS or TNT adaptation in 1999. It was being rebroadcast the other night and I got suckered right in. I think I like George C Scott's better, but this is good, with some really scary moments.

If only this were the beginning of a new page, one could say:

And one for Marlo
-
After that, I watched the show I recorded for DR Edi: LIFE AFTER TOMORROW, interviews with women who played either Annie, orphans, or both in the Broadway and national tours of ANNIE.
Fascinating stories they had to tell, and I did enjoy the show very much.

DR SingingNymph, the disturbing Santa is the first laugh I've had today after lots of weepiness. Thank you!

Watch out. You'll end up under the host.

Worst Christmas movie: "It Happened One Christmas"---a remake of "It's a Wonderful Life" with Marlo Thomas as a female George Bailey. Yuck!
When I worked for Drama Book Shop, Marlo Thomas' assistant was the biggest pain-in-the-ass with phone orders, demands, and returns because she was also an idiot. We hated both her and Marlo.
-
I ended the evening rewatching the "date" episode of BROTHERS & SISTERS since it featured the show's major gay character on the receiving end of two kisses, something still relatively rare in prime time television.
Looking forward to the show resuming, especially since Jason Lewis (from SEX & THE CITY) will be joining the cast for six or so episodes as another potential love interest for gay son Kevin.

Mmm. This eggnog is like drinking velvet.
I have a quart awating me in my refrigerator in Oakland (it had a long shelf life with expiration of Jan 07 2007).
That and a particularly fine-tasting dark rum will make my New Year VERY bright.

My friend Josh Grisetti's series THE KNIGHTS OF PROSPERITY begins in two weeks. Everybody watch it!
-
Tomorrow is THE day: my friend Jeff and I are seeing the first showing of DREAMGIRLS (at noon). Because I'll have a busy morning, I'm not sure I'll make it on-line, but I'll try. The afternoon may be more realistic, but how early I wake up and get moving will determine if I have time for the computer tomorrow morning.
-
Is anyone else rather goofily addicted to "Scrooged" as I am?
It, "Groundhog Day" and the "Ghostbusters" films are the only works Bill Murray has done which I can stand him in.

For dumb movies with dumb songs, has anything ever worsted "Snow White and the Three Stooges"?

Worsted?
Come on, Der Brucer...you've been challenged.

Does anyone here ever eat pickles when also eating spaghetti?
I learned the other night that my aunt and uncle like having pickles with their spaghetti.
We were going to have them over for a spaghetti lunch or supper, but I don't want to see any pickles on the table.

It's a local dairy egg nog, freshened with Brandy, Rum, and Bourbon and garnished with freshly ground nutmeg.
(I haven't any Meyers rum, so I used Captain Morgan Spiced)

I'm guessing BK's "pasghetti party" is in full swing.
Lots of cheer, lots of chat and lots of chewing.

Merry Christmas everyone. I am at my parents and there is just a dial-up connection. Nothing wrong with that, but I am used to high speed so this is driving me crazy. So, I'm not going to try to catch up with all the posts. I'll have to do that later.
Tonight was really fun. We went to some friends - our families have been spending Christmas Eve to gether for years. We gathered around the piano and sang Christmas Carols, had some great food and great conversation. It was a perfect Christmas Eve.
-
SEASON'S GREETINGS!
-
And you eat that with the spaghetti?
(yuck)
Yep and with Lasagna and any other tomato sauced pasta dish.
It's a hold over from my Naval Academy days when the chef always placed a stainless steel tub of PB on the table every evening (to aid those who cared not for the main course).
Same chef that got me used to having vanilla ice cream on my morning cereal.
And since I enjoy caviar, anchovies, raw oysters, scrapple, and grits (not together) - I get a lot of "yucks" :)

Oh....well...Tiny Tim....

What is wrong with liking several versions of CHRISTMAS CAROL? I enjoy Alistair Sim, Mr. Magoo, and I especially enjoy George C. Scott, although he is not one of my favorite actors. I also love Albert Finney in the role; but, in all fairness, I am better in the role. But then I got to sing all the songs that were added for Anthony Newley.

Neither will John Barrymore!! ??? ;)

JRand56, I am also sorry to hear about Kachina. When you said she went over to The Rainbow Bridge I thought that was just the name of another store and she was going to be their cat! :-\
-
Nothing wrong with liking different versions of Christmas Carol, provided their good versions.
-
For dumb movies with dumb songs, has anything ever worsted "Snow White and the Three Stooges"?
And see, I love that movie, wouldn't you know.
-
Been out of town and finally had a chance to log in on antoher person's computer...
I just wanted to wish everyone a Merry Christmas!!
-
My favorite is 1954s SHOWER OF STARS televersion titled A CHRISTMAS CAROL with Fredric March as Scrooge, Basil Rathbone as Marley's ghost and Sally Fraser as the Ghost of Christmas past.
Bonnie Franklin had a role as one of the Cratchit kids.
-
Have a great christmas.....
I hope bk's dinner party went well with mirth and laughter all about!
-
A Merry Christmas page 12 dance!
-
Bruce's Partay was lovely and yummy and nice, and I enjoyed it very much! The second party we went to was louder and filled with gay people who were also very happy, but the food was not as good ;)
Now I am off to my Grandmama in Northridge and then to San Diego to visit various relatives and stay in the will.
Happy Holidays to everyone!
-
DR Jrand, I am so sorry to hear about your kitty, Kachina! It is so hard to say goodbye to a loved pet.
I don't know what I would do if Bear hadn't made it though his surgery. Mom has decided we should change his name to "Patches". It looks so funny with his coat shaved in all the different places to have those "warts" cut off.
-
Happy Holidays to you all! Technically I am here in Arizona, so it is already Christmas...so Merry Christmas - FROM THE FUTURE!
I had a fun evening -- went to a dinner party with my parents at the house of some of their friends. The husband is a self-proclaimed existentialist, and his wife was cooking up French cuisine...so naturally, my parents and I went in all black, complete with berets and cigarettes (mine not lit, of course) - and the three of us each had a nametag denoting us as either "Albert" [Camus], "Jean-Paul" [Sartre], and "Simone" [de Bouvoir]. He went in speaking in purposefully bad French accents and prattling off as many basic existentialist ideas as we could remember from reading various Wikipedia articles for around 15 minutes this afternoon. Lots of fun. Most likely not as fun as Bruce's rockin' party, but fun nonetheless!
And with that, I am off. So, again, I say Merry Christmas to all - to all a good night!
-
Yes, I'm up very late. I woke up with a totally dry throat and just didn't feel like going back to bed.
-
My favorite version of the Christmas Carol was "An American Christmas Carol" with Henry Winkler. I was lucky enough to find it on DVD--which is good since you don't see it very often on TV anymore.
-
I'm still looking for the movie or tv show or whatever it was that had 3 guys from the nut house that thought they were the 3 Wise men. They escaped and went to the zoo to get the camels and everywhere they went, something really good happened.
I think the star they were following was one that was on the top of a building downtown and of course, there was someone who didn't like Christmas that changed their mind by the time the story was over.
I wish I could see that again. Like I said, I don't even know if it was a movie or a tv show. I only saw it that one time but I never forgot it.
-
Of course, you all should know about the story of the 4th Wiseman. He came bearing Fruit Cake and was never heard from again! ;D That same fruitcake has made the trip around the world many, many, many times sometimes used as doorstop.
-
Well, I guess I should head back into bed. But I'm really not tired. Maybe I'll just pull out a DVD and give it a view. Lord knows I have enough of them that I've never even opened.
I must also confess that I LOVE this new wireless keyboard. It's soooo much nicer to have the keyboard on my lap then trying to hunch over the one on the desk.
Have a GREAT evening all!
-
Hey BK, how was/is the party?
-
The Do is Done and it was an especially lovely Do. I must go write the notes now and tell you all about it. It was my intention to take many photographs and make many postings, but I never had the chance. However, others were taking photographs and I'm sure they'll forward them to me and I shall post them when they do.

Tonight at my parents' house, we ate and opened presents (the big gifts I got this year were a digital camera and some money!) and then watched "Holiday Inn." I had never seen it and I think my niece was totally bored...a guilty pleasure for me. She always feels that she gets to choose what we watch. Well, not tonight. ;) Anyway, a lovely time was had with the family, as always. :)
-
I'll look forward to seeing them!

What kind of digital camera did you get, DR George?
Money is always a nice gift. It always comes in just the right size, shape and color. :D

Shortly, I will put on A Broadway Christmas, my Christmas CD of choice for these little Christmas Eve soirees.
I wanted to bring this and "A Hollywood Christmas" to my parents' house (and to my sister's tomorrow), but they're in storage. I NEED TO EMPTY OUT MY STORAGE UNIT!!! I keep saying to myself (and posting here) that I need to, but I haven't, yet. ::)
;)

The gift draw at work was a bit of a dud because you had to buy a gift that was good for a man or a woman but you couldn't buy a gift card. They put numbers on all of the gifts then made you draw one.
I would much rather have adopted a family that needed some help and bought them some food and gifts for the kids.
As it was, I got a plate to hang on the wall. Hate to say it but it's going in the Goodwill bag I'm working on.
-

My parents bought me an Olympus FE-170 with 3x optical and 4x digital zoom, 6.0 megapixel CCD sensor (whatever that is), 2.5' color LCD AND they also got me a 1GB memory card! I can take 205 super high quality pictures or 610 or so high quality pictures or 5742 of what they call e-mail quality pictures (I'm thinking thumbnail type pictures).
-
For the gift that I bought, I got one of those tower things with hot coco on the top, a box of nuts, a box of cookies, etc. I thought that would work for a man or a woman and it was food so it would get eaten up, not collect dust some where.

Here's one...it's the very first picture I took with it (I've only taken seven so far), and it's my niece Hilary with my sister Diane right behind her:

And here's my parents' armoire with the TV closed up inside it next to their tree:

Wow! Very nice.
-
The only thing that I don't like about it (but it's a minor quibble) is that there is no viewfinder...no eye-hole! You can ONLY use the 2.5" LCD screen, which, of course, uses up more battery power. :P
-
Wow! Very nice.
Thanks. :)
-
Well, I think I shall head in and try to get some sleep. It's raining here (again) and the sound of it on the roof might just lull me to sleep.
Have a good evening, DR George!

Thanks, Danise! You too!! And an official Merry Christmas to you!!
