I'm sorry your camera doesn't have a viewfinder, DR George.  You will find it hard to take photos in direct sunlight.  You just can't see what is on the screen--at least I can't on mine.  I use the viewfinder all the time at the dog park.

I think I can hang around for ten more posts.

Something else you might want to look into is getting one of those high speed cards.  I didn't think it made a difference but it does if you want to catch some action shots.

I don't understand why they even have a lower pixel setting.  Seems a waste to me.  If your going to take a photo, don't you want to take the best one you can?

How are you going to know when you are going to take that one special picture and you'll want to blow it up or crop it or do something that you can't do with a lower setting?

Yea...my sister's camera has the option and I always used the view finder to save battery power.  Oh well...it was a gift, and otherwise, a mighty fine gift it was!

I know.  But I suppose that there are some people in the world who might want the option of not having to manually resize pictures.  Who knows, maybe I'll find a specific use for it...or not. ::)

It also has a macrozoom, so that it can zoom as close as 4 inches away.  That's pretty cool. :)

It's the first that I've owned, but not the first that I've used.  I've borrowed my sister's camera and her boyfriend's camera, so I have some experience with them.

How are you going to know when you are going to take that one special picture and you'll want to blow it up or crop it or do something that you can't do with a lower setting?

The rationale for the lower pixel setting is to conserve memory space. If your going on an outing where you might want to take 50 or so shots before you get home to download, the smaller pixel size is an advantage. (The large pixel sizes are only of value if you intend to do an 8x10 quality blow-up - in today's world, most photos are sent via Internet and are displayed on monitors where the smaller file sizes are almost mandatory (and you suffer no loss of quality at the monitor level for the lower pixel settings).

God bless us everyone indeed!

Good morning, all, and Merry Christmas!  I have to wake up, wrap several gifts and head off to a do at the home of Mr Ron Raines and his family.  I have several tasteful gifts for my beloved goddaughter, and the Christmas brunch will be a delightful social occasion.

After that, I shall return and watch more holiday DVDs.  I want to look up Pee-Wee Herman's Christmas special; it's here somewhere.

TOD:  I haven't opened my packages yet, but I did get checks from my Dad and brother Randy, photos from our DR MBarnum of The Brain events, a lovely gifts from our DRs TCB, Tomovoz, and Jason; and I have packages from my friend Loyce, Rodgers & Hammerstein (I'm pretty sure it's the WHITE CHRISTMAS CD) and our DR Jose.

I have a package waiting for me at the Post Office, which might be from the Macbeths, but I'm expecting nothing from them this year and possibly never again.  I suspect it's from our DR Nurse Jane.

We did a gift trade at my Dad's for the adults. (There are still 6 kids I have to shop for and it's a madhouse---they rip them open and little pieces immediately disappear and fights ensue because one kid, no matter what he gets, wants what his cousin got, even if it's the same hting but a different color!)

The gift exchange was one of those where you open something and you can either keep it or trade for a previously opened gift. I brought something I would like, which was a DVD and various exotically colored popcorn kernels from India, hoping I would get a high number and trade back for it.

I ended up with a set of tacky coasters with little sayings based on virtues...faith, charity, etc. Oooooops! I somehow mistakenly left them at my Dad's!

I mentioned some of the DVDs I got at the CHristmas party the other day, so I won't repeat those. I have also gotten gift cards for Borders, Amazon, and Best Buy. I have a few gifts here I haven't unwrapped yet and am waiting to unwrap later today.

And I have a present exchange dinner party on Wednesday night where other loot will be gathered, but I have no idea what the gifts will be. I know at least four DVDs since these guys asked for DVD lists, but what they'll select to give me, I have no clue.

Thanks to DR MBARNUM, I have also seen that television version of A CHRISTMAS CAROL and enjoyed it very much.

For me the joy (in addition to the choreography) of Scrooge is seeing Old Scrooge and then seeing a young and EXTREMELY handsome Albert Finney as Young Scrooge.  There was certainly more a sense of a lost life for me in that comparison than in others when Old Scrooge was made to look younger OR another performer played Young Scrooge.

Good morning to all!  Merry Christmas!

We are also having a bad storm as I type this.  The Weather Bug is blinking and chirping.  I see we are under a tornado watch.

I have my chestnuts in the oven and I'm hoping that the power won't go out before they are done.  If I wink out it might be a bolt from the blue!

Well, my cold is back in full force.  I kinda guessed it last night when I woke and couldn't swallow.  It's full blown this morning.  I'm coughing like before, my nose and head feel stuffed.  Ugh.  The good news is that I already had a doctor appointment set for this Friday so if I can just hold out until then I should be ok.

I feel so sorry for all of the kids that got bikes and skate boards and baby buggies and such.  It's pouring down rain.  There's no way they could go out and try them.

Yes, James "The Godfather of Soul" Brown died early this morning at an Atlanta hospital.

Don't know the particulars.  He lived in Augusta GA, which is only a 30-minute drive from here.

Every year, at the Imperial Theater in Augusta, there was a James Brown Toy Giveaway for the underprivileged.

I saw him on TV just a few days ago at the opening of the theater for this year's giveaway.  He looked a bit drawn and sounded tired, but he was in happy spirits.

I've crossed paths with Mr. Brown several times over the years in airports.  I was once seated across the aisle from William "Refrigerator" Perry on a flight to Atlanta from Columbia.  Perry was a star football player at Clemson University and a member of the great Chicago Bears football team of the 1980s that won the Super Bowl with Perry as a star defensive lineman.  Perry lives in Aiken and currently works as a brick mason, IIUC (that's internet lingo for "if I understand correctly").

Many years ago when I was home for Christmas, the tragic news of the death of Butterfly McQueen marred the Christmas festivities in Augusta.  She died at her home in a fire.

WOD:  I loved Inga SWENISON in BENISON.

TOD:  Well, they were technically Chanukah presents, but I have stacks of DVDs lying around here.  Oy.  I've been watching An Angel at My Table, which, despite its title, is not a very festive film.  :)  Very similar story to Frances.  Hopefully not as fictionalized (or, maybe considering what happened to poor Janet Frame, I should hope it was fictionalized).  Don't ask me why, but I've also been watching the boxed set of MGM horror films, which have really superb commentaries (for a change).

Merry Christmas to one and all!!

Tonight is the Christmas gathering at my aunt's house of her other son who wasn't able to come last weekend or last night.

He will be here with his wife, his twin daughters, one son who joined the Coast Guard this past year, and one son who has a domestic partner and baby.

Debra and her family will be there along with me and my mom.

My aunt's house is small...and bedlam will ensue.

We won't be eating in any sort of formal manner...just grabbing, chowing down and fending for ourselves.

I am always most grateful my mom lives "across the street".  It's nice to just leave when one's last nerve has been trod upon.

TOD:
A friend who lives in Canada has the advantage of receiving both a nearby US PBS station, as well as TV Ontario (TVO), Canada's PBS-like station. TVO has wonderful programming, including a Yorkshire Television series called Heartbeat, which is extremely popular in both the UK and Canada. Said friend of mine is totally addicted to Heartbeat. Knowing how difficult I am to shop for, she now wisely tapes Heartbeat for me and sends me the fall season for Christmas each year, then the others throughout the year. Heartbeat is light drama, takes place in Yorkshire in the 1960's, with of course 1960's costumes, vehicles, and music. It's great fun and I always look forward to it.

I'm quite certain that all the youngsters will LOVE Dreamgirls - LOVE it.  I'm quite certain that all the musical theater fans who already LOVE it before they even see it just because it's a MUSICAL on FILM, will LOVE it.  I suspect a few others will LOVE it.  And I supect that most people will feel it's okay, fine, not great, or they will be indifferent.  In trying to have it all ways, to please especially the people that are not interested in book numbers on film (preposterous), the filmmakers have created pablum and not art.  You can't try to please everyone - people will sit still for things that work, it's that simple.  People sat still for West Side Story and The Sound Of Music and many other films that have book numbers.  But today's filmmakers and studios?  They won't take the chance - they assume people won't, and shoot everything as if it were a performance number, even though it's clearly not.  That way, as Bill Condon says, they "ease" the audience in.  You can't "ease" and audience to do anything.  Do it or don't do it.  Be true to what you're doing or you will fail.  Try to please everyone, every demographic, every audience member, and you come out with nothing.

The studio is working so hard to shove this thing down people's throats - I would say, in fact, they're being as shameless as Miramax was with Chicago - for those who don't remember, Chicago was the film that made the Academy change their rules about promotion and what studios could send to their members.

I'm back from my matinee of DREAMGIRLS (actually was home by 2:30). The theater was packed, and the audience was VERY enthusiastic. Yes, Jennifer Hudson stopped the show (if you can call it that with a movie) twice, and "Steppin' into the Bad Side" and "Dreamgirls" also brought down the house. I will be very, very surprised if this movie doesn't hit big. Unlike most of us here, many people don't know this sensational music and will be discovering it for the first time with this film (just like CHICAGO).

I found it a marvelous piece of entertainment, and I found myself thrilled by it on several occasions. I also had a tremendous lump in my throat when it was over, relieved that one of my favorite musicals had been brought to the screen with so much of it intact.

Yes, there are definitely changes to the story, but in the main, I can't complain. I even liked all three of the new songs, especially the one Jennifer Hudson did in the first half of the picture. (Naturally, that's not the one that got the Golden Globe nomination; Beyonce's "Believe" did.)

I found the casting mostly spot-on, but I have to agree that Jamie Foxx just didn't bring enough grit and grouch to his part. His performance is almost nonchalant, and with everyone else throwing themselves into their roles with such vigor, he looked out of his league.

Great to see Loretta Devine and Ken Page in nice little parts (Loretta gets to sing, and her voice is still wonderful). The wig on John Lithgow brought jeers from the audience, the one truly negative reaction from the audience during the movie. Enjoyed seeing John Krasinski (Jim from THE OFFICE) in a tiny bit, and I didn't even recognize Hinton Battle in the movie. When I saw his credit on the screen at the end, I gasped!

See DREAMGIRLS!

Things managed to work themselves out to everyone's relief but poor defense attorney Watt who always comes out on the losing end of these things. We've been watching the History Channel all afternoon.  All UFO shows -- Brasil, Mexico, Texas, etc.

Nothing ever changes...lots of theories, lots of assertions, lots of debunking, ZERO evidence and no conclusions.

Merry Christmas, everybody!

I am also trying to figure out how to work the iPod my aunt sent me. My mom is mad because said aunt didn't stick to the ten-dollar limit they agreed on. I, however, am not complaining.

Did she at least keep your mom's gift under $10?  Or do they not exchange gifts?

FYI, I'm flying back to Oakland on Wednesday morning.  I'll be arriving in San Francisco a little after noon, PST.

It's been quite a visit.  It seems to have gone by in a hurry, but thinking back on all the events and things we've experienced, it has been fully enjoyed.

By me, at least!

What would Camus do?

Would too many prunes make Camus doodoo?

Was Camus a practitioner of voodoo?

Do people not familiar with his work ask "Camus who?"

If you named your pet cow after him, would Camus moo?

Is an existential error a Camus boo-boo?

Is an existential Hawaiian dress a Camus muu-muu?

Is an existential BK just Camus too-too?

She obviously takes great joy in her gift buying.

I always hated being restricted by limits when I participated in such things.

Of course, if names were being drawn and I wasn't fond of the person whose name I drew, I took great pains to meet the limit AND find something he or she would like (just to spite myself).

Darling daughter and hubby and friend Skye have come and gone.  We had a marvelously marvelous visit with much laughter, they ate some spaghetti and the remainder of the tuna past salad, and cousin Dee Dee and dog Casey stopped by to say hello.  I've got about an hour before I toddle off to Cissy Wechter's Christmas bash - I'm going to do everything in my power to not overeat, having already had a bite of tuna pasta salad and a smidgeon of spaghetti - probably not more than three ounces of pasta total.

I've had a bowl of chili and a bowl of chicken-and-dumplings.  I've had a slice of chocolate pie and a slice of chocolate cake.  I've had two cups of coffee.

So... As I was saying...

I was back in the apartment on lunch break washing some dishes.  While washing a coffee mug, the handle broke off, and somehow ended up cutting my left thumb.  I thought I had it wrapped up - literally - well enough to continue with my day, but once I got to rehearsal and checked with my stage manager, she immediately called the Company Manager, and the Company Manager drove me to the Emergency Room.  Thankfully, the Washington Redskins vs. Dallas Cowboys game was on that afternoon, so the ER was actually "slow" and empty.  After a short wait, I was sent "behind the curtain", and after getting four stitches, I was sent back home.  -With my thumb wrapped up in a couple of layers of gauze.  (On the way out of the ER, I joked with the nurse that they wouild probably get slammed now that the football game was over... alas, the nurse "sadly" agreed with me.)  The gauze dressing came off two days later, and the stitches were taken out ten days later.  -And, right now, I have just a trace of a scar.  *And I even played a tech rehearsal with only one thumb functioning!  :)

Lesson learned: Washing dishes is bad.

:P

So...

As for presents...  Since I have three nieces and a nephew, they're the ones who really raked in the Christmas loot this year - as always.  However...  My brother, Don, gave me a digital camera.  Another digital camera to replace the one he gave me last year... the one I lost on the cruise a couple of weeks ago.  And it turns out to be a very nice digital camera.  My brother, Mike and his wife, gave me a Gap gift card, and my parents gave me a check. :)  I also got a great series of gifts from my Secret Santa at the theatre which culminated in a final gift of a chocolate fondue set with a bar of Marie-Belle Dark Chocolate - my fave!

However, I have to say my favorite gift this Christmas - this whole year - has been my niece, Emily.  She just turned six months old, and she truly is precious - and she still smiles at me, and laughs with me.  It's been wonderful being able to spend time with her while I've been working back down in DC.

In other news...

All I will say is that the past couple of weeks, months have been "interesting".  Not necessarily "bad", just truly "interesting".  My work got "interesting".  Thankfully, the haze is starting to clear up, and I'm starting to enjoy my work again.  -Even if I do find myself rolling my eyes still every now and then.  But I'm among some wonderful people, and, now I'm seeing that I was always among them.  It's just amazing how one - like myself - can concentrate on the "interesting" stuff in their lives, and not see all the good, all the joy that's been there all along.  As the song goes in She Loves Me, it's all about "Perspective".

...Just in time for Christmas too!  And that has also been a wonderful Christmas present this year too.

Heck!  I played my whole tech week for She Loves Me with the stitches in my thumb!  If anything, it made me clean up my technique a bit.

I hope you enjoy the "read" and the "listen" - those improvisations are truly amazing!  And as for the card... <blush>

*And, Thank You, to you too for your gift.  I just love the classics.  :P

...And I actually ended up heading down to Richmond this morning to spend Christmas with Steve and his family.  So, I'm pretty stuffed right now with country ham biscuits, corn on the cob, green beans (cooked with ham), sausage balls, smoked turkey, deviled eggs, potato salad, sweet potato casserole, chocolate fudge (with and without nuts), pecan pie, pumpkin pie, pumpkin roll, sweet tea (and unsweetened tea, if so desired), etc...  It's always Good Eatin' at the Austins!

My family actually did our Christmas "thing" Saturday night - between shows for me - since my brothers - at least the married (and possibly soon-to-be-married ones) - were heading to visit their in-laws (and possibly soon-to-be-in-laws) on Christmas Eve.  And that was also quite a meal too: beer can chicken, short ribs with sauerkraut, Cuban-style pork roast, Virginia ham (my father's first "attempt" at a Virginia/country ham - "You didn't soak it?!?!?!"), mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, rice, birthday cake (my niece, Alexandra, was born on Christmas Eve), etc...

Now I'm just trying to decided if I really want to make a stop at IKEA and Potomac Mills (BIG outlet mall) when I head back up to DC tomorrow morning... Hmm...  Decisions, decisions...

We met some other families and took all our kids together to see A Night at the Museum.  Surprisingly, we were about the only people with kids there.  A nice premise, lots of heart, thankfully very little "character arc," and some funny bits by Dick Van Dyke and Mickey Rooney.  Robin Williams only does his manic shtick once and the rest of the film plays it surprisingly reserved.

I'm off to my LAST Christmas gig for 2006!!  Hoo-ray.  Then I actually have a few days off--my first in months.

Tomorrow we meet Sherlock.

After dinner, we got to talking about, of all things, HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL. Even though it's more than a year old now, I've never seen it. Heard about it, of course, and the concert tour of it played here this week, but I never had seen it, so, out comes the DVD, and I finally got to see HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL.

Not a bad little show, and I would have killed for something like this to have been out when I was taking singing and dancing lessons amid jeers and taunts from my schoolmates.

I had about 40 minutes before coming upstairs once I got home, so I watched some of the special features on the MEDIUM disc. One was an overview of the entire season done after the season wrapped. Very nice inside information about the making of some of those episodes.

Another featurette dealt specifically with the making of the 3-D episode which I found very interesting.

And, of course, I watched the gag/blooper reel. Lots of fun seeing different sides of the actors than we noramlly see in the episodes.

Probably so, but at least there would have been something to point to and say that here was someone who was an athlete AND a singer/dancer. (And, of course, the entire basketball team showed its dance moves a couple of times during the film.)

I must not want to finish Pandora's Box very much - I am procrastinating, which, I suppose, is better than anticrastinating.

I'm making the yuletide gay right now.  The yuletide has been straight for far too long, if you ask me.

I just read aloud Cason's last post, and DR Sandra is laughing hysterically.

I do what I can.

Our mantra for last night was: "Why try to be something, when you can just be..."

We're flying single o
Maybe there's two o's, but I don't know
But we've got a hit song that wasn't sung by Scrooge Magoo
But now it's sung by a non-needy Jew

Fanny
Fanny just needs Fanny
She's the most selfish person in the world
Sufficient
She's so self-sufficient
But since we need a big hit song
Who cares if it's all wrong

For Fanny
Fanny just needs Fanny
She's the happiest person in the world
With one person
One very special person
She'll sit right there on the shelf
Truly content with herself

Where am I going with this?  :)

Gosh, it's late.  And the only other "leave" song I could find is "Leave it to Levy" and I'm not sure that's in keeping iwth the theme.

I had a lovely Christmas dinner of Cherry Coke and floop. Once again, I was the only one eating said floop and drinking said Cherry Coke. The rest of my family really missed out.

Tonight, I went to my sister's house and my parents were there.  We ate and played cards (Phase 10...what else?) and listened to Christmas music.  I came home and watched an episode of "Doctor Who," an episode of "Las Vegas" and I'm now on my third episode of "Medium."  Finally, I'm able to watch some of those episodes that I've had on the DVR!!  I decided to delete without watching all four episodes (each) of "The Class" and "Old Christine."  I have enjoyed watching them (especially "Christine") but trying to catch up with them just all of a sudden didn't interest me.  What does that mean?? ::)

Anyway, I'll watch them as they come on, but if I get that backed up again, I won't. ;)
