Well, you've read the notes, the notes were prescient, oh, yes, they were prescient, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're being prescient right now.

I haven't searched the LA theatres but I will check out the ones in the Kritzer books.

I got a phone call from my friend in LA who just received her xmas package which included a certain "Dirty Book". I'm looking forward to her comments on "Your Worst Nightmare"!

The Harry Palmer films you speak of all came out reasonably priced in region one, then went out of print, which is why they're pricey on amazon.  They can be had cheaper on eBay.  However, I really recommend a multi-region player - a really great one can be had for around $150 or so, and there's so much that's not available here.  The Palmer films are all available in region 2 very reasonably along with a zillion other great titles from great filmmakers.

If you want to peruse some excellent players, pay a visit to www.hkflix.com.  That's where I got my two players.

Yesterday after work, I decided to go to the mall, just to look around and waste time.  I didn't stay too long, but I went to Sun Coast and they were having a sale on TV seasons...buy one, get one free. :) The only thing that they had that I might've been interested in was season 5 of "24" for $45 but they didn't have season 4 (I have seasons 1-3), so I didn't get it. :-\

After that, I went to Target (I received a $25 gift card from a friend of my parents for Christmas) to look at VCRs...yes, VCRs.  I'd like to replace one of mine and since I already have three DVD players, I don't need any more, or even a VCR/DVD combo.  Anyway, they only had one model that was just a VCR but it's the same brand as the one that I have hooked up to the VCR that I want to replace, so I can't use two of the same brand together (same remote control frequency), so I'll look somewhere else later.  So, I'm looking at the DVDs and wondering how much their seasons of "24" cost.  They have a display with the first four seasons and they're $24.99 each!  I look around the corner and there's the fifth season and that's also $24.99!  Score!!  Full price is $69.98 for season four and $59.98 for season five, but with my $25 gift card, I get both seasons for only $29.18!!  Double Score!!

From what I've experienced, most computers can play different region DVDs, but they'll actually switch the code setting only a certain number of times so that you might end up permanantly locking it into region 2...not a good thing if you don't have many region 2 DVDs.

Good morning, all!  I'm all caught up on last night's and this morning's posts.  I have very little to do today beyond working on my Toyland reports.  I should go to the NYPL, but I think I'll hold off until Tuesday and play in the neighborhood.

DR Cillaliz, the only good BABES IN TOYLAND recording is this group of excerpts recorded around 1945; God knows when the recording I worked on will be released.

Dear Friend BK, did you get my cryptic email about the Dallas Lyric Stage?

TOD:
I mentioned a few theatre performances the other day, but I would add the following to the list of Luker, Martin, Felciano, and Jones:
Tracey Gilbert (the soul of THE TRAGIC & HORRIBLE LIFE OF THE SINGING NUN)
Laura Daniel (who was both moving and outrageous as the Singing Nun)
Beth Fowler (NIGHT OF THE HUNTER)

I have haircut scheduled this morning, after which DH Richard and I will take my computer to the Apple Store to have its memory increased.  Assuming all goes well, I should be back online sometime this evening.

Since I couldn't get on-line earlier, I started watching the Oscar-winning CRASH again (off Showtime-HD). The film has effective moments, that's for sure. But so much of it is pretentious, and some of the dialog that Paul Haggis puts in the mouths of the characters sounds like a screenwriter pontificating and nothing like actual speaking. Always takes me right out of the movie and makes it seem so artificial.

I suspect this afternoon I'll get back to CSI and maybe watch something like SILENT MOVIE or possibly HARPER, both of which were Christmas presents.

Tonight, I'm watching another Blu-ray film: ENEMY OF THE STATE. I watched it off a friend's DVD several years ago and really liked it, but I've forgotten much about it, and that old DVD wasn't even anamorphic as I recall, so this Blu-ray release should be eye-opening.

Favourite female stage performance of the year would be Emma Fielding in Tom Stoppard's ROCK 'N' ROLL.

Favourite male stage performances of the year are:

Frank Langella in FROST/NIXON
Rhys Ifans in Patrick Marber's DON JUAN IN SOHO (a modernizaton of Moliere's Don Juan in Hell)
William Gaunt in Frank McGuinness' GATES OF GOLD
and...

Me in Steve Martin's adaptation of Carl Sternheim's THE UNDERPANTS...only because it marked my return to the stage after 25 years...a year-end review said: "Charles Edward Pogue, whose resume is so long you could place ads in it, was a pleasure to watch -- a true master of his art."

Good morning dear Esteemed, rested, and buffed-out BK --

I was interested in your comments on Howard Hanson, and also a few other composers yesterday. Yes, I'm familiar with a number of the Hanson pieces, and I think that his big soaring melody from the slow movement of the "Romantic Symphony" is one of the most touching things I've ever heard.  I even play a little shortened transcription of it on organ.

I wonder sometimes how many people that listen to some of the really rich big orchestral film scores of the wonderful guys like Goldsmith, John Williams, Ernest Gold, Waxman, Korngold, etc., realize how much influence and derivation comes from composers like Hanson, Benjamin Britten, Elgar, Coates, etc.

If you aren't familiar with Britten's "Sea Symphony" (I don't remember the #) try it sometime.  It is wonderful.

In any case...

Topic of the Day:

Basically the whole cast of The History Boy.  To think that that troupe of actors had been doing the play for almost three years straight, and had managed to keep the material and the performances so fresh and revealing!  I think it was my favorite night in the theatre this past year.  Period.

Christine Ebersole - Grey Gardens
Tyler Hanes - A Chorus Line  My tongue is sort of planted firmly in cheek with this listing.  ;)  But still... <drool>  *Alas, I'd have to rank almost the rest of the current revival among my disappointing theatrical experiences this past year.  Well, disappointing is not exactly the right word - it just seemed that too many things just came "this close" to being what it should be, should have been.  It never quite hit the mark.  But I'll be seeing it again in a few weeks, so... I'll have an update.

BK said in the notes:  "So, just before Brain rehearsals began, I was whisked off to New York, New York for a week of rehearsals and performances for The Last Starfighter. I really had a wonderful time – FJL and Skip couldn’t have treated me better, and I liked the director and my fellow cast members. It was fascinating to appear in a musical again – the last one I’d done was in 1982!"

Bk, one never would have known it had been that long.  We really appreciated your doing the NYMF readings, and loved your performance!  Thanks for helping to make that one of the highlights of Skip and my 2006.

Bravo, Pogue!

I don't know that I've seen many stage performances of worth this year.  Hmmm, let's see - I saw Curtains - that had okay performances but not great.  I saw Light In The Piazza, that had okay performances but not great.  I saw Sister Act, that had... well, never mind.  I saw A Chorus Line, that had... well, never mind.  I probably saw a few other things but I can't remember what they are.  So, I'll say Matt Ashford in Deceit.  And I'll say Alet Taylor, Lauren Rubin, Merrill Grant, Cason Murphy and Benjamin Clark from The Brain From Planet X.

A funny (funny-peculiar, not funny-haha) moment last night:  we were a group of three - Skip, me and our agent - at Milla's delicious show.  A newish  acquaintance came up to us on line; he was there alone and asked if he could join us at our table.  We said sure, kept the checks separate but had a lovely time.

After the show, the three of us who had come there together got up to leave, and the person who had joined us said something about feeling like we were deserting him.  I found that odd, he had just joined our party once we were there, had come alone.  I wasn't sure what consideration we were supposed to give him, and I said VERY good-naturedly that we had to get back to walk the dogs, and reminded him that he had come without us to begin with.  It's not like we had plans together.

The fellow seemed to see my point quickly, but was i being inconsiderate?  Once he had joined our table on the spur of the moment, should we have considered what he wanted to do in deciding when it was time to leave?

Where's Emily Post when you need her?

I did get an email from the gentleman today.  He was clearly ultimately not offended, and told us what a good time he had having joined us.  but I'm wondering how to dela with this if it ever comes up in the future, since this person was a well-connected gentleman and I was relieved not to have offended him.

So, I put in another CSI episode, and it ended up being a two parter that had to do with a violent shoot-out in the streets of LV and the aftermath of the chaos.

Riveting two parter as evidence was combed through, analyzed, and results found that led to additional searches and discoveries. And the final results were quite surprising and ultimately devastating.

I then put in KISS ME KATE, the 1953 movie version and enjoyed watching the first part of it. The DD 5.1 sound is really lush for this movie. I forget this , and every time I put it in, I'm blown away during the title sequence as that full MGM Orchestra plays that medley of hits from the show.

In honor of SPRING AWAKENING's success, there is apparently a new put-down going around town, to wit:

"Honey, YOU are the bitch of living."

("The Bitch of Living" is the name of one of the more exciting songs in SPRING AWAKENING.)

Spring Awakening's "success" at this point is strictly critical.  It is not doing well at the box-office - not considering the reviews.  I think January will be a very tough month for it and other shows.  When they have to send teens all over the Internet to tell all the people who don't like the show how crazy they are and when they have to trumpet that SA made the cover of some teen magazine, well, I think they are flailing.

Title: Re:THE DAY BEFORE THE FINAL DAY OF 2006
Post by: FJL on December 30, 2006, 02:20:58 PM
You're right, of course, Bruce.  The success is with the critics, financial success for Spring Awakening is hardly assured.  If the subject matter and frankly depressing nature of (the mostly marvelous) Spring Awakening weren't adversely affecting word of mouth, reviews of that ilk would have led to immediate sell-outs, even in the week before Christmas.

DR FJL  Emily from Canada used to post.

My thoughts. The words of departure would be the key.  An indication that you have enjoyed the company of the person, a "loose" invitation to meet again at some stage, and an apology (though only necessary for politeness) that you must "desert" your friend as you have other matters to attend.

Even perhaps a "Next time" perhaps we can go for coffee elsewhere etc. may be appropriate.

Throw away the guilt! Of course Mother Helen would have dealt with the situation in a superior fashion.

The pizza does smell good, I'll say that.  Unlike most frozen pizzas, this one actually smells like a pizza.  I did what was suggested - took it out of the freezer, took the pizza out of the pan it comes in, wiped the moisture from the pan, put a little oil in the pan and then put the frozen pizza back in the pan.  Then that went in the refrigerator to sit for three hours.  Then it went in the oven.  It should be ready in about thirty-something minutes.

I'm busy translating and adapting TARTUFFE for our spring production.  I will play Orgon.  I never done anything like this before and I'm having a great time.  So far, I'm happy with the work and think it's going to be pretty funny. Knock wood.

Good back vibes to DR Jane. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Welcome to Miss Karen.

I also watched CRASH last night. I had never seen it.  It was interesting. I did enjoy it (although it's not my typical kind of movie).  But it was interesting to see how everything tied together. And how various people could be good and evil at various times.

I also have the Reese Witherspoon movie JUST LIKE TO HEAVEN to watch. And SUPERMAN RETURNS. And THE LAKE HOUSE (or whaterver the sandra bullock movie is called).

Oh and yesterday i also watched PRIME (with uma and meryl streep).

Do you want a recommendation of something light and funny or something a little more serious? Musical or drama?  Have you seen the Grey Gardens film?  If you are at all familiar with it you'd probably enjoy the musical. Christine Ebersole was great. http://www.greygardensthemusical.com/

Drowsy Chaperone http://www.drowsychaperone.com/ was delightful.

If you're a David Hyde Pierce fan, he's wonderful in Curtains http://www.curtainsthemusical.com/, he has the lead and I think it's a perfect role for him.

Haven't seen too much on the drama side.  Our NYC friends may have other suggestions

Welcome to brand-spanking-new DR Miss Karen.

I had a teacher in grammar school we had to call Miss Karen, evidently because she believed our little eight year old tongues couldn't wrap themselves around Miss Klabernowski (or whatever it was.)
Don't you loath attempting to pronounce those long names starting with "K".

for the DR. Who fans...

I just finished watching the first two eppies of the new Doctor Who series season 1. For some odd reason Rose reminds me of Romana II.  Is it me or just my imagination?
Well, they both have long blonde hair...

Romana II never had Rose's edge, and was quite well educated.  On the other hand, Rose is very much the Doctor's equal, not someone inferior who he has tagging along, which is exactly like Romana II.  And neither one of them was/is a screamer.

Busy day at work today, what with so many shoppers getting ready for their New Year's Eve partaying.  It will be the same tomorrow.

Monday, on the other hand, should be dead, particularly after all the bowl games.

And then, on Tuesday, der Grampa and I will be taking the grandlads to the bookstore to shop shop shop!  I've already got a trio of books that I want for myself.  And then we'll be taking them to a very nice steakhouse where we'll try to teach them proper manners for dining out, the way Magic Mommy hasn't bothered to teach them.

I had a 10th grade biology teacher named Mrs. Kunz (pronounced like Koontz, re: Dean Koontz).

She had an ugly streak, however.  If she felt a student was unprepared she would go out of her way to humiliate him or her.

You can imagine how they pronounced her name after that.

He took me to Santa Lucia, a Greek restaurant, in FArgo. Excellent food! I had Chicken Souvlaki with asparagus ina  tomato sauce, lemon potatoes and a rice pilaf. Most excellent! He even treated me to a glass of chardonnay. The meal was topped of with a lovely tiramisu and Greek Coffee... A most excellent birthday treat!

I am watching PEYTON PLACE.

I have seen this movie once before, many years ago, and didn't care for it as much as the sequel RETURN TO PEYTON PLACE, because I liked the cast in the second film much better. But this time around I am really enjoying PEYTON PLACE and it's cast (one of which I have interviewed)...although that Lee Phillips sounds a lot like Mickey Mouse sometimes.

Watched some interesting things on TV tonight.

I began with the Blu-ray disc of ENEMY OF THE STATE. It's a conspiracy chase movie a la THREE DAYS OF THE CONDOR, and though there are lapses in plotting and some inconsistent characterizations, I just took the ride and enjoyed it.

The Blu-ray transfer is very good, but not quite the reference quality of THE SEARCHERS or FANTASTIC 4.

Next, I put in SILENT MOVIE. I hadn't seen it in many years. Brooks has some funny gags in the movie, but what he was painfully unable to do was build a gag, and then milk it for all its worth. He had these great set-ups, and he'd get one joke out of them. Chaplin or Keaton would have taken the same set-up and found fifteen minutes' worth of hilarious stuff instead of fifteen seconds' worth.

It was nice to see Burt Reynolds and James Caan in their stunning primes, and Anne Bancroft's sequence was funnier than all of the other guest stars' scenes put together.

I will probably stay at Peter's---and our opening is March 23rd at the Quad Cinema:

http://www.quadcinema.com/static/quadcinema/coming.php

but I will be coming up for a day or two around our Boston opening on Jan 17th.

Here's a show you couldn't PAY me to see:
http://www.stereogum.com/archives/003805.html

I think it's already closed...

If you were looking for a show in January, Curtains won't be it. It starts previews Feb 27 and tickets aren't on sale yet.  (Jan 7 for AMEX  and sometime after that for the rest of the world)

After that, I put on a CSI episode which I had only the vaguest memories of having seen. This one involved two cases - one, a separated couple fighting over ownership of their dog and the other a man who literally ate himself to death.

Good show.

It looked from their website that it doesn't open until Feb. Did you get to see a preview? Maybe I'll try to get tickets for when we come back in March...

I saw it a couple times in L.A. last summer for it's pre-Broadway run

I had about 25 minutes left, so I flipped over to HBO which was reshowing ELIZABETH I, and I watched almost a half hour of it.

I haven't bought the DVD of it yet, but I keep meaning to as it's a wonderful four hour production. For a long while, I had it on the DVR, but I needed the space at one point and deleted it thinking I'd buy the DVDs later. I still haven't gotten around to doing that.

I just might be here tomorrow night.  The party I was planning on attending is a bit of a trek of travel and it's supposed to rain cats and dogs all tomorrow night long.  I think I rather stay dry and cozy at home and watch Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home New Year.

Several of us here are BIG fans of UGLY BETTY. I think it's the year's best new comedy.

I really like this show!  I think it's well written, well acted and has lots of heart.

I might be here tomorrow night too...

We do close tomorrow night, and there will be a party.  And it's also New Year's Eve, and there will be a party for that too.  In fact, it will be the same party.  And since I've never really been one for Closing Night Parties, nor New Year's Eve Parties...  I'm thinking I might just hang out for a bit after breaking down my equipment in the pit, make sure I say a proper, in-person goodbye to the cast and crew...  Then head back here to watch the festivities on TV... and be a part of the HHW festivities too.  We'll see how things go.  -And since the show will end a little after 10:00, I could still make the rounds for a good 45 minutes before heading back here...  Decisions, decisions...

In the How Much Do We Love The Internet Department:

As some of you know, way back in 1969 I lived for one year in New York, Brooklyn to be exact.  It's why I set Writer's Block in that year, and a lot of the detail in that book is from personal rememberances of that time.  I went to be an actor, but only ended up doing one show - in summer stock at Lake Swananoa in New Jersey.  I did Stop The World, I Want To Get Off there.

So, tonight I get an e-mail from someone asking if I was the same BK that had done Stop The World in the late 60s in New Jersey.  I immediately wrote back and said indeed I was.  The gal wrote back and told me that her brother played Littlechap, Jr. in the show, and she, as a twelve year old, did his makeup.  How insane is THAT?  I love stuff like this, I really, really do.  She's already written back and we're having a nice e-mail volley.  She's an artist now, and married to a composer.  And THAT'S what I love about the Internet.  I've asked her if they have a program from the show, because I certainly don't, and it would be great to have it.

Snizzle is a local term for freezing drizzle mixed with snow, rain and ice....

Some call it sleet but it is coming down to soft and there for it could not be called sleet.
