Well, you've read the notes, the notes were shaken, not stirred, and now it is time for you to post until the shaken cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: VESTIBULE!
-
And now - Dino at the piano.
-
I did finish connecting the dots and got to the end of chapter one. I think it's smoother and better (the material from the old version), but I'll see how I feel when I look at it tomorrow. But, I think I've now used just about the only part from the old material that's usable - maybe one other little thing - again, just the idea, not the actual writing. But then, after that, it's all new. I think it's working better, but I'll get the first thirty pages done and then show it to Margaret to see what she thinks.
-
My lids are heavy.
-
Here's a question for you: Eyebrows - why?
-
Now, now, I'm not doing a whole page of ME again.
-
Welcome, four GUESTS. We're talkin' about dance crazes.
-
Dance craze?? THE HUSTLE!
;)
-
I was never a fan of the Macarena (I always thought that it was kinda stupid) but that was just me. ::) If anyone here likes it, well, that's okay too!
And just a few years ago, wasn't there some new dance craze called the Ketchup...or something like that?
-
Never heard of a dance called the Ketchup. I, of course, did the Hokey Pokey, and I certainly did the Twist and the Swim.
-
I tried to breakdance once, but I almost broke.
-
Who knew that the Twist would still be around?
-
The Twist? Who knew that I'D still be around?
-
Well, I think I shall toddle off to the bedroom environment so I can get my beauty sleep.
-
But, before I go...
-
Pick a little talk a little pick a little talk a little cheep cheep cheep talk a lot pick a little more...
-
Today, I'm going to have lunch with a friend, Josh, who played one of the other "Indians" from Cannibal: The Musical. He wants to direct "Juno and the Paycock" and he's asked me to play the role of Joxer (the second male lead, I guess). I said yes. It was written and set in Dublin, Ireland in the 1920s. I don't know if he wants to use accents or not, but I think I've listened to enough musicals with Irish accents that I could probably fake one. ;)
-
Good night, ladies.
Good night, ladies.
Good night, ladies,
We're going to leave you now!
-
Good night, Mrs. Calabash...wherever you are.
;D
-
Well, I guess I'll be toddling off to my bedroom. Good night, BK.
-
Not that "wacky" but the following:
The Cha Cha Cha
The Twist
The Hokey Pokey
The Bossa Nova
The Tamouré
The Limbo Rock
The Bus Stop.
The Hitch Hiker

Neat stamps Laura! They are a lovely gift!
-
I have been fighting a sinus infection the last couple of days.
I am on intersession hours which requrie me to be at work at 730 am but I will soon go back to night hours starting next week. HOORAY!
-
Good morning DRs Edisauras and JRand.
-
Good morning, DR TOMovOZ....I am enjoying January and the lovely photo on the Aussie calendar you sent me!
-
I didn't win the Powerball, DR RLP. Did you?
-
The Twist - which I thought was great, until I heard Arlene Francis and Bennett Cerf talk about trying it at the Peppermint Lounge one night on What's My Line.... All I could think of was why would those OLD people want to do the Twist?
-
Classic Images.....MBARNUM.....Van Williams. Must read his TALL STORY story....that Josh Logan always had one scene in his movies like that!
So sorry to hear about Cal's wife, DR MBARNUM....
-
And how! Page Two - the Hustle!
(http://www.lovemusiclovedance.com/hustle.gif) ;D

Anyone remember the Batussi? It was popular for a week or so.
Here is how to do it.
First take your index finger and middle finger and make a peace sign. Then turn your hands with the fingers still in place so the front of your hand is facing your face.
Now draw the positioned fingers on the right hand across your eyes, with the eyes inbetween the positioned fingers. This should be done with the left hand and at the same time as the right hand is doing it
Now shake your ass a bit. Seriously. Do some weird things with your arms while you are shaking your ass. Only shake your ass for 5 seconds or the effect will be lost.
Rub your hands downwards across your body till you reach mid hips.
Then grab both sided of your cape and twirl around for 5 seconds.
-
Good morning to DRs Michael Shayne and Elmore.
-
DR MS - only Adam West could do the Battusi to good effect.
-
Food morning, all! And a special one to our DRs Tomovoz and JRand56. DR Tomovoz, did you see my inquiry about Anthony Warlow's DIE FLEDERMAUS (it always reminds me of a Snoopy "dark & stormy night routine")?
I have a friend in hospital. If he is released, I may need to take him home. Otherwise, it's Toyland and p'raps the NYPL today.
TOD: Did anyone actually dance the (forbidden) Lambada outside of terrible films ? I always preferred the film and Broadway dances: jig hop, continental, tapioca, varsity drag, beguine, etc.
-
Have a good day, DR ELMORE. Vibes for your friend.
Off to work.
-
No DR Elmore. I've not seen Mr Warlow in "Batboy"
-
No DR Elmore. I've not seen Mr Warlow in "Batboy"
I wonder if he dances the batusi?
-
Good morning, Larry.
Will you reach post #7000 today?
-
Thursday morning greetings! Another work day, which will include training on some new AV equipment in the auditorium where I do most of my presentations.
-
I was a mean Twister when I was twelve. Wond several contests. Alas, the Twist peaked and so did I. I was never much of a dancer after that.
-
Re: last night's episode of MEDIUM.
Another really good show.
I must say though when i read the description it sounded a lot like the other dream episode (that one featured alison and her middle daughter both having dreams (bridget) and this one was with alison and ariel (older daughter).
I do like when they include the kids because i find it very interesting. Although it also makes me wonder how much this really affects them.
Anyhow last night's show was a good one, especially because it was not obvious to me what direction the show was heading in.
Although I did think that they didn't have enough scenes with her boss. He sort of came out of nowhere since he is usually in a lot more scenes.
-
Good morning!
Bright and not especially cold today. We're supposed to have rain tonight, but right now, things look and feel great outside!
-
I was just read the Screen Actors Guild nominees for films and TV, and I was surprised and delighted to read that Julie Andrews has been given their Lifetime Achievement Award.
Terrific and much deserved!
-
Rain.
Cold.
Gray.
-
Whatever this storm system is, it includes "pressure" that affects my sinuses.
I've a mild sinus headache although I'm breathing freely.
-
In the SAG awards. DREAMGIRLS, LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE, and BABEL each scored three nominations apiece, the highest numbers for any movies this year.
-
DR JRand: I've no idea what the results of my "lottery" tix are. Will check during the work day.
Despite my ruminative enthusiasm of yesterday, I have LOW expectaitons.
-
In addition to the other dances named, I remember learning the Pony which I often combined with the Swim in the years after the Twist. All of those dances bring back memories.
Yes, I remember the Hustle, too, something like ten years later.
-
I don't know how much viewing I'll get done this afternoon. After lunch, I must make my way to Target to pick up some items, and who knows how long that will take?
-
Anyone up for The Chicken Dance?
-
I was in france when the Lambada (The Forbidden Dance) was at its peak. Every wedding, every party, this song was played relentlessly. And it's not even a good song! And how can the dance be forbidden if everyone and his dog was dancing to it?
-
In the mid 70's I remember going to a concert by the Average White Band. I was one of the few white folks there. I remember looking over the balcony at this huge crowd of folks on the floor, wearing straw hats and doing this dance en masse that I learned later was some form of The Hustle. It was the first time I'd ever seen it and I was amazed that everyone seemed to know this dance. I started to think that it just wasn't part of my genetic makeup.
I was working as a music and drama specialist at inner city parks that summer, so I asked the kids about it. (The girls there loved to do my hair, which was waist-length.) After braiding my hair into cornrows, they taught me The Hustle. When I came home, my Dad (alarmed by my new hair-do...which was a hair-don't to him) asked me what I'd been up to. I told him I had learned The Hustle that day.
In his mind, he heard that I had "learned how to hustle" and decided I should quit my job because of all these "bad influences"! (He didn't know about the dance craze...)
-
I think I'll head down now to clean the bedroom areas before cleaning myself up for lunch out and errands later.
WBBL.
-
elmore, the tapioca? I remember the carioca. Anyone remember Miss Dee Dee Sharp and The Pony, Little Eva and the Locomotion? How come no one does the Black Bottom or the Turkey Trot anymore?
-
The TWIST is my favorite dance to watch...and to do...although it hurts after awhile.
-
Dee Dee Sharp's THE PONY is one of my favorite songs, but I don't know if I have ever seen anyone do the dance.
-
Edisaurus, your story made me laugh. A lot of the kids here are into "Chicken Noodle Soup." I think it's a song with a dance associated with it but I'm not sure. What I am sure of is that it involves a lot of hip movement. More than I ever saw at my middle school dances.
-
I enjoyed last night's episode of Medium. Good story, good mother daughter drama.
Does anyone know when The Closer is coming back on? They had a 2 hour special episode and then nada.
-
What?
Nobody remembers the "Hucklebuck"?
-
Unique to South Carolina...coastal SC, that is...was "The Shag."
They made a movie about it, by the way.
-
Geez, is it ever an ugly morning here in Oakland CA.
-
It's just me and TPunk on this here forum right now.
-
It's just me and FJL on this here forum right now.
-
It's just me, FJL and Ginny on this here forum right now.
-
And I have nothing to add about the TOD.
How about everybody do the Post?
-
Speaking of dances....
The first time I saw anyone doing the "Macarena" was when I saw Al Gore doing it on TV.
It was very strange, to say the least.
-
Wiggle your fingers, bend down 'til you crouch
Then you just linger until you say ouch
Get up and shout "Hey Guy Haines is the most"
You're doin' the HHW Post!
-
Actually, Wasn't Dee Dee's pony song actually called Ride. "I'm going to get on my pony and ride, ride, ride." I know I have an old 45 of it somewhere around here. I think the Chubbster (as in Mr. Checker) actually introduced the Pony as he did so many other dance crazes in the wake of The Twist, including the aforementioned Hucklebuck...and the Limbo and the Popeye...
Ron, I have heard of the Shag and seen the movie. My brother lives in S.C. (Marion) and I think his whole family took Shag lessons.
-
I'm up, I'm up.
The Tapioca was in the movie Thoroughly Modern Millie - I think it was created for the film.
-
I've done the Tapioca with lots of whipped cream.
-
Chubs was also responsible for the Hitchiker too, I believe. Who was the Watusi...? Why does the Orlons stick in my mind. "Wah-wah-wah-oo-watusi"...
-
I forgot how "Awards" season it is - I'm quite bored by all these Awards giveaways. The actors, the producers, the directors, the writers, the Globes, the Oscars, the People's Choice (do they do those anymore?), and every website known to man now has an "Awards". Perhaps we should start our own Awards right here - the Hainsies/Kimlet Awards.
-
I'm quite groggy this morning, but I'll get over it, joggy, and then packy.
-
Packy up orders, that is.
-
Watusi is what you get - isn't that a Tina Turner song?
-
How many of you have done any of these dances this morning?
-
More Chubby Checker dance crazes: The Hully Gully, The Jerk, The Fly...
Anyone remember how to do "The Freddie"?
And what about "The Stroll"?
The Bristol Stomp?
-
It was the Orlons who did Wah-Watusi. They also did back-up on Dee Dee Sharp's "Mash Potato time"...The Mash Potato being another dance craze. My we were dancing fools back then, weren't we?
Twist Trivia: I own two Joey Dee and the Starlighters albums...of Peppermint Twist fame. I think one is called Live at the Peppermint Lounge and the other is the soundtrack to Hey, Let's Twist featuring the band.
-
The Chub-meister also had a variation on the Twist with a record called, I think, Slow Twisting.
Even Sam Cooke got into the act with Twisting the Night Away, as did Gary "U.S" Bonds with Dear Lady Twist...I think that was his.
Anyone ever Bossa Nova with Eydie Gorme?
-
I do the "Freddie" every day. The middle-aged Jew version, of course, is done with a little less flexibility and more kvetching.
-
I have been fighting a sinus infection the last couple of days.
~~~Sinus Vibes for DakotaCelt!!~~~
-
At my brother's bar mitzvah, my mom sometimes reminds me, I thought they were making fun of my name when they started to do "the Freddie." At seven years old, I didn't know from dance crazes.
-
A visit to the Chub-inator's website uncovers another dance sensation (well, maybe not exactly a sensation) that I vaguely remember...The Mess Around. I couldn't begin to tell you how it was done.
-
With my little aches and pains, I tend to do the Bristol Myers these days more than the Bristol Stomp.
-
I have a friend in hospital. If he is released, I may need to take him home.
~~~Vibes to Elmore's Friend!!~~~
-
I do love doing the Lambeth Walk, though.
-
Slightly off-topic:
How many here remember the "classic" London Fog jacket in Navy?
This was very popular in the 1960s. You'd go into a men's clothing store and find a rack full of the same jacket in various sizes.
I'd dearly love to find one now....but just TRY and find any specific link to a supplier of London Fog ANYthing.
I dare ya!
Now...when I said this was slightly off-topic, I meant that many of the dances being mentioned here were often danced by London Fog-wearing dudes and dudettes.
-
Good Morning! Good Afternoon! (for the East Coast Hainsies and Kimlets, at least)
I'm up, I'm up... Not sure I'm up enough to start dancing yet, however...
-
Boy, am I having fun googling old rockers. Who'd have known that Dee Dee Sharp apparently had an "answer" song to Gene McDaniels' A Hundred Pounds of Clay" entitled "Two Hundred Pounds of Clay". I think one of Mr. Kimmel's divas should record it on the next Guy Haines album, with Guy singing A Hundred Pounds of Clay and the dive responding with Two Hundred Pounds of Clay.
-
DR Ron Pulliam - As for where I'm sleeping... I'm sleeping in my bedroom... On a surprisingly comfortable Aero-Bed. -My roommate has one for guests, and since we don't have any guests right now... It's a full size "mattress", and it's one of those "double-decker" ones, so I'm not sleeping on the floor.
-
Ron, I believe I had a grey London Fog jacket that my mother had given me a while back, but I think I pitched it when I moved because it no longer fit. Guess I should've kept it. I didn't know London Fog had become iconic.
-
I do love doing the Lambeth Walk, though.
I can just visualize it!
-

It may be that I'm simply romanticizing it a bit.
But I'd LOVE to find another.
-

That's good to know, even if you HAVE swept up all the dust bunnies.
-
Ron, London Fog is still out there. I googled "London Fog Clothing" and it brought up some places where it can be had. London Fog is apparently the brand of Londontown Corp.
-
Ron P - How did you find that picture of me as Lucy in CHARLIE BROWN? I thought I'd had all those destroyed.
-
The Lambeth Walk (http://www.vauxhallandkennington.org.uk/images/anytime2.mid) midi-style.
-

Oh, yes. Lots of listings. But nothing "classic" in style in the offing.
I'm afraid the jacket I want has gone the way of the VW bug.

What I wonder about the kids' abilities on the show is if they're following what the real Alison Dubois' kids can do or is that part total fiction.
-
DR Ron Pulliam (again) - As for your garage encounter yesterday... Good for you! I mean, if the lady had indeed been hit by someone who lived in your complex, and she knew that the car was in the garage - which would most probably mean that the owner was home - then why didn't she just pick up the phone and call someone - the owner, the insurance company, etc. And is she had to sneak in to the garage in the first place... Sounds like something was up.
While walking around here in NYC, I've seen some signs posted on building lobby doors, something to the effect of:
"Dear Tenants: Please realize that is not rude for you NOT to let someone else into the building. If they live here, they should have their key/security card with them, and they should use it. And if they do not have their key/security card, then they can pick up the phone and call the landlord."
-
Ron P - How did you find that picture of me as Lucy in CHARLIE BROWN? I thought I'd had all those destroyed.
That's a rather famous photo by photographer Bill Brandt.
-
A visit to the Chub-inator's website uncovers another dance sensation (well, maybe not exactly a sensation) that I vaguely remember...The Mess Around. I couldn't begin to tell you how it was done.
Just make sure you don't get caught. ;)
-
DR Ron Pulliam (and again) - As for London Fog... What size do you wear? And exactly which coat do you want? The waist-length one? or the "rain coat"/duster type? My father tends to buy a couple of those each year since they're always on sale at the PX. My brothers and I used to get at least one of them each year for Christmas. I know they've updated their styles over the years, but some of the classics are still out there. Oh! And I've seen them at Sym's too. -Where an educated consumer is our best customer. ;)
-
DR DakotaCelt - Hope your sinus infection goes away soon. ~~~FEEL BETTER VIBES~~~
-
My training on the new AV equipment has been cancelled for today, due to "technical difficulties." Let's hope they get is all resolved before 1:30pm, Tuesday, January 16, 2007, which is the next time I'm scheduled to present in that room.
-
I do love doing the Lambeth Walk, though.
The one time I went to London, we actually walked along South Lambeth! We never were able to find the actual Lambeth Street...or lane...or boulevard...or whatever it is. ;)
-
Off to work (note to self...shower first)!
-
The one time I went to London, we actually walked along South Lambeth! We never were able to find the actual Lambeth Street...or lane...or boulevard...or whatever it is. ;)
Here's a bit of Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lambeth_Walk) trivia about this topic!
-
As for the Topic of the Day...
When I was nine or ten years old, I remember being thrilled that I had saved up enough money to buy "Let's Disco". It was an LP and Book combo. And, yes, it was put out by K-Tel! The book had pics/demos of the various dances, and one of the LPs (I think there it was a double set), had some instruction. I remember being able to do the first one in the book which was the "Bus Stop", I believe. However, the more "advanced" ones... I just couldn't figured out how you got from one picture to the next. ;) -However, that was also when I learned what the term "ball change" meant.
*Oh! And the song that was used during the instruction part of the recording was "Do You Wanna Get Funky With Me". Of course, being the precocious pre-teen that I could be at times, I always did an aural double take... "Funky" ? ... There were times when I thought they were singing something else... "Funky"?!?!
-
When I was in high school, we learned all the "new" dances in gym class. I remember doing the Hustle and the Bump, don't remember many others. It was in the prime of disco days.
I still say if everyone danced like we did then we'd all be skinny
-
Or have lots of broken hips
-
Topic of the Day continued...
The one summer I played on the Annabel Lee in Richmond - lunch and dinner cruises up and down the James River, I learned all about "The Shag". We always had requests for "Shag" music. Thankfully, most of the stuff on our set list could be modified via a tempo change into a Shag song. But, Boy! did we get some Shag Enthusiasts from time to time!
And then there was that one Wedding Reception Cruise where we played "The Electric Slide" for almost 40 minutes!...
-
Or have lots of broken hips
Or both.
-
Any Army private (female), who was a classmate of mine in the Defense Information School Journalism course in Indianapolis back in 1972, and I created a dance we called "the Dawg."
It was a basic hustle dance, but there was a move that caused more than a few stares, glares, etc. It was the raising of one leg as if at a fire hydrant.
-
DR TPunk, re: the CLOSER, I think DR MattH said that it would not begin again until the summer.
It's interesting but this season did not start here until september. But we got the 2 hour finale as our season finale in december.
Now i just have to wait for them to finally show this season of nip/tuck. So frustrating. But last time i checked their site it said they would definitely show it.
-
Well... Time for me to do something today, so...
Laters...
-
How about two hundred pounds of Cassius Clay?
-
What a morning! I haven't stopped - three huge boxes to package up, several little ones, had to reorder the Skinner/Ripley CD (and hope I don't sell out before they're repressed - seven days turnaround), and am having major payroll service problems. I agreed to help out our pal Rupert Holmes, who had to record some demos for his new show Dorian. He's not a signator to AFTRA and I am, so I said I'd use Kritzerland and we'd go through the payroll service for him. So, we sent the paperwork to the company that did the Skinner/Ripley payroll and they can't do it - it's a one-woman operation and her husband is sick and she doesn't have the time. Unbelievable. So, I'm running around trying to find another payroll service - the big ones want Kritzerland to have liability insurance which, of course, we don't, and I'm not going to get any in the near future, since WE'RE a one-man operation. Man. Next time, no favors.
-
Another picture, this time it's me working on the gift bags. We received cases and cases and cases of deodorant from Colgate Palmolive. It came in boxes which contained smaller display boxes (almost like a Russian doll) and each of those boxes had to be opened and the deodorant removed so we could place a single "Speed Stick" into each gift bag. This is me doing said unboxing. There is MUCH more deodorant than appears in the picture.
-
If any New Yorkers have the name of a small payroll service in NY, pass it along asap.
-
In the event any of you missed "America's Got Talent," and hadn't heard that it was won by 11-year-old Bianca Ryan, and haven't heard what she sang in her first TV appearance on the show, this treat's for you:
Bianca Ryan (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozDh4NQveJs)
-
And from the same show, the same singer, here is the song she sang in the finale (the won that sealed the deal for her) (there's a hometown feature at the start):
Bianca Ryan (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VI-7K4H13IA&mode=related&search=)
Seems like "DreamGirls" was good for her!
-
DR SagePowder: Welcome. You're very nearly timely so soon after the holidays when "Sage" was certainly a dominant herb in traditional cooking.
-
Payroll service emergency taken care of - found a company out here who can do it - and their fee is MUCH less than these idiots in NY.
-
I shall now go ship packages.
-
I forgot how "Awards" season it is - I'm quite bored by all these Awards giveaways. The actors, the producers, the directors, the writers, the Globes, the Oscars, the People's Choice (do they do those anymore?), and every website known to man now has an "Awards". YES!!!
-
We enjoy watching the old folks dance at the Gold Coast lounge in the afternoons. It is very sweet.
-
According to my Futurama calendar, today is Tom Thumb's birthday! If he were still alive, he'd be 169 years old! :o
;D
-
The Closer should return in June...I'll ask the promo producer when I work with her on Monday. We're working on more Closer stuff but it hasn't been announced who will be on which series next season.
Meanwhile there is a bloodless coup going on where I work. I'm glad I am Switzerland---a.k.a. a free agent!
-
Another picture, this time it's me working on the gift bags.
Was it taken on Boxing Day, or rather, "Unboxing Day?"
(Sorry I didn't get a contribution in before the end of the year, but maybe it will give them a little jump on next year's bags!)
-
I am home. I stopped by St Vincent's to visit my friend, and I told him if he needed an escort - should the hospital release him - to call and I would go back to the Village and get him safely home. I believe he'll be in at least another day since they're waiting for test results.
I got an email from DR Miss Karen, who seems to be having computer problems.
I doubt I'll make it to 7,000 posts today. Maybe tomorrow.
-

Thank goodness for movies!

Back from lunch at the museum.
Today is Meat Loaf Thursday.
Haven't had their meat loaf in a month of Thursdays, it seems like.
So....it was pretty good. Has been better. I'm full, though, and satisfied.
-
Here is today's lesson: I had to ship 100 After the Ball CDs to the Irish Rep. I was about to go to the UPS Store to do so, because a package of that size at the USPS has to go priority and it's way too expensive. I had to ship Emily Skinner 150 CDs and that cost a little over $100 at UPS, via ground - priority would have been only slightly more but didn't include insurance. So, that's how I shipped them and I split the shipping cost with her. The only other USPS alternative is media mail which isn't an alternative, at least not for me.
Today, on a whim, I went to Fed Ex and asked them how much it would cost to ship this heavy box of 100 CDs via Fed Ex Ground. The cost? WITH insurance, $23. I've said it before, but UPS has turned into the biggest joke in the world and why ANYONE would ever ship via them is now a complete mystery to me. I've shipped several big packages via them and that waste of money is now making me very angry. So, from now on it's Fed Ex Ground for any big packages, unless I can fit the stuff into the flat rate priority boxes.
A big fat raspberry to UPS and my fervant wish that they dry up and blow away.

There's also an answer to "Tower Of Strength"by Miss Gloria Lynn who was better known for wishing us love.
-
In one hour I shall stop by rehearsal for a few minutes, then be on my way to Vinnie's.
-
Tomovoz, how is the fire situation? Is it under control now?
-
Someone may have mentioned this but "The Freddie" was created for Freddie Garrity of "Freddie & the Dreamers". Chubby Checker covered the song.
-
Thanks for asking Dear Reader Laura. It's another total fire ban day today. The pre Christmas fires are still going and there were two new ones yesterday. More rain is expected soon - problem is that it is usually with thunder storms and lightning strikes are the main cause of the fires. Three people have been arrested for deliberately lighting fires in that period over Christmas and adding to the conflagration.

BK - I find FedEx Ground horribly unreliable; you really get what you pay for with them. Something can show as "out for delivery" and not be delivered for days (very unlike the regular FedEx.) This is a big problem if it's something the person needs to be at home to receive.

Tomovoz, What was Gloria Lynne's answer to Tower of Strength. Knew the Freddie was for Freddie and The Dreamers, didn't know Chubbo covered it.

I enjoyed last night's episode of Medium. Good story, good mother daughter drama.
Does anyone know when The Closer is coming back on? They had a 2 hour special episode and then nada.
June, I believe. The show is actually a summer series, I believe.

I have a navy London Fog jacket! I had a beige/cream one, too, but I outgrew it. The navy one still fits me very well.

FJL, it's going to the Irish Rep, so I think it will be fine. In fact, I know I've shipped some art via Fed Ex Ground and it always got where it was going safe and sound. Fed Ex, unlike UPS, doesn't toss their packages onto the ground and kick them and play volleyball with them - Vinnie, when he was very young, worked for UPS and he has told me the most horrifying stories.
-
Shortly I shall be on my way to stop in at rehearsal, and then to Vinnie's, and then I've got some major Creature Wasn't Nice booklet notes to write. There aren't enough hours. And tomorrow morning, I have to go to storage and get some Creature materials, which I was supposed to do ages ago. It's maddening, and I now only have tomorrow morning to do this stuff, because I have to be at rehearsal at noon, and Vinnie's after that.
-
Now i just have to wait for them to finally show this season of nip/tuck. So frustrating. But last time i checked their site it said they would definitely show it.
I have to say that nip/tuck had an off season. It began so well with some really riveting episodes, but by the end, it seemed to be floundering around looking for plots and got more and more outrageous (not that it hasn't been outrageous before). I didn't really end up enjoying the last half of the season though I faithfully watched it.
-
Tomovoz, What was Gloria Lynne's answer to Tower of Strength. Knew the Freddie was for Freddie and The Dreamers, didn't know Chubbo covered it.
You Don't Have To Be A Tower Of Strength. (Everest recordings)

Had a nice lunch and got to catch up on my friend John's news and his trip to Miami for the Orange Bowl. He and his wife also toured the Everglades in one of those ski-boats you see on CSI: MIAMI. I've never done that and sounds like it would be so much fun.

One of the things I wanted to pick up at Target this afternoon was PRIDE AND PREJUDICE which they had on sale this week for $10. I couldn't even find a used copy for that price, so I got it.
-
English singer Craig Douglas's version of "100 Lbs of Clay" is worth tracking down too. He had to re-record it with different lyrics to get airplay by the BBC.
-
Page Six Wendy and Mrs. Darling Dance!!!
-
When I got back in, I finished THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH which I still had about 25 minutes of to watch.
-
JRand is familiar with Mr Douglas as he was in "It's Trad Dad" with Helen Shapiro.
-
But I couldn't wait to finish it and then put in PRIDE AND PREJUDICE and revel in it all over again. I didn't quite get to the end, but will complete it when I go back down before prime time TV tonight.
-
ABC is being very cagey tonight. We have a new episode of UGLY BETTY but two GREY'S ANATOMY reruns.
The 8 p.m. CSI episode is a repeat but the 9 p.m. episode is a new one.
All of NBC's line-up tonight are new episodes.
-
Dorsey Burnette's "The Feminine Touch" was an answer to "100 Lbs Of Clay"

Thanks for asking Dear Reader Laura. It's another total fire ban day today. The pre Christmas fires are still going and there were two new ones yesterday. More rain is expected soon - problem is that it is usually with thunder storms and lightning strikes are the main cause of the fires. Three people have been arrested for deliberately lighting fires in that period over Christmas and adding to the conflagration.
It is like that in Arizona in June and July, until the monsoon begins and raises the humidity level. Often we just get dry storms -- thunder and lightening -- which sets off new fires.
-
I love monsoons in June
How about you?
I love those Looney Tunes
How about you?

As a fan of "Lost", I am looking forward to its return. I hate to say it, but CBS has lost a viewer of "Jericho." The hiatus pretty much left me not missing it at all, so I'm not gonna bother when it returns.
-
I forgot all about Jericho. I guess I gave up on it even before the hiatus.
-
I don't think taking these serialized shows off instead of having reruns is a great idea. Out of sight - out of mind, I think.
-
Off to read some more KATE before return to Jane Austen-land.
In KATE, I'm up to the publication of Garson Kanin's TRACY & HEPBURN.

So what's this bill the administration's pushing as an excuse to open my mail?
-
I think it is the Bill for the abolishment of cheap porn.
They keep trying to push people into expensive alternatives for everything these days.
-
And the word of the day is: VESTIBULE!
Casey would waltz
With a strawberry blonde
To the muzak playing in their psychiatrist's VESTIBULE.
Fortunately, the doc's receptionist was used to these kinds of things.

Anyone ever Bossa Nova with Eydie Gorme?
No, but I always dreamed of doing the hustle with Steve Lawrence.

No, but I always dreamed of doing the hustle with Steve Lawrence.
Well, he's 72 now. He might accept an offer.

A vestibule is one of those things that looks so swank when you see it in a magazine or on some floor plans, especially of older homes.
In the South, especially, the gracious old homes had vestibules.
Unfortunately, the charm rather goes out of it for me when I hear some curator or other pronouncing it "vest-ee-byool".
-
Well, he's 72 now. He might accept an offer.

According to my Futurama calendar, today is Tom Thumb's birthday! If he were still alive, he'd be 169 years old! :o
;D
169? If he were alive today, he'd be dead.
-
A good news day. My DVD/CD burner dirve has a two year warranty! My point of sale just rang me to let me know. There is still customer service out there. I'd assumed I had maybe three months! I've had the computer since August 2005 and it has worked hard!
-
And our statue would be called The Benjamin.
I think the name should be derived from "Hainsies/Kimlets"....like the "HaKis"
-
169? If he were alive today, he'd be dead.
Well...if he was "alive" today, at age 169, he'd probably "wish" he was dead.

If Donald Trump and Rosie O'Donnell were romantically linked, would their names be combined?
If so, would they be called the "Doosies"?
-
Vestibule...
I can hear that word being used in a lyric. Something like
"I've seen the best of Yul
In the vestibule."
-
If Ben's and Anthony's (or Ant's) names were combined, would they be "Bent"?
-

How about "Dump"?
-
IF Der Brucer's name was combined with S. Woody's, would they be "Broody"?
-
How about "Dump"?
It's always first names being combined with couples.
Although, along the lines of "J-Lo" for Jennifer Lopez, the Donald could certainly be called "the Dump."
-
And if good friends like Mike Barnum and Larry Moore combined their names, they would be "Milar".

Robert Osbourne is going on about how 42nd STREET was the first movie that used the Broadway-star-can't-go-on-so-unknown-understudy-takes-her-place-and-becomes-a-sensation cliche, but how many other movies ever really used this plot line?
-
IF Der Brucer's name was combined with S. Woody's, would they be "Broody"?
Please! We'd be Wouser.
-
It's been tried. A cousin tried to call us Benthony. It didn't take.
Not "Anthonam"?
-
I am patiently waiting for der Brucer to return home. He had to travel to the Eastern Shore, to make sure the elder grandlad got home. (For some reason, the bus that usually gets him there won't be running on any Thursday this month.) He told me he'd be home by "about eight," so I figure I've got another hour for him to get here (Magic Mommy no doubt had to argue with him about anything and everything, and that always takes longer than he expects).

I've been thinking about this 42ND STREET understudy-star plot and the Bradford Ropes novel on which it was based. It may be the first example of the chorusgirl-goes-on-becomes-a-star cliche. I cannot think of anything earlier in European and American storyline. The classic European backstage novel is NANA, based on Offenbach star and star courtesan Hortense Schneider and her stage rival Leah Silly. I also don't recall seeing listings for any standbys or understudies in any fin du siecle theatre program. In 42ND STREET is Peggy actually her understudy or a chorus girl he pushes into going onstage?
Mary Orr's story "The Wisdom of Eve" is from the mid-1940s and based on a true incident from the life of actress Elisabeth Bergner. I remember reading once Miss Orr's account of the Bergner incident, but I've forgotten it.
Boy, this is one more post that went to pieces as I slouch toward 7000.
-
How many of you have done any of these dances this morning?
I have done the twist, hustle, macarena, some moonwalking., two-stepping, dirty dancing, tush push and other linedancing.
What is the bristol stomp?
-
Great news, Dan the Man!
-
While no one may have actually pilfered the plot of 42nd Street, there are plenty of variations on the theme of "we-need-a-last minute-replacement-for-the-show." SUMMER STOCK comes instantly to mind...I'm sure with a little thought I could come up with a few more.
-
I would like to learn how to do the swing! It looks fun.
-
I do know how to waltz and polka.
-
You'd have to be pretty old to remember how to do the Stomp. The Bristol Stomp was a song by one of this Philly groups, The Dovells. I think it was some sort of dance craze that started in Bristol, PA. I couldn't tell you how it was down. The Dovells had a follow-up called, I believe, Bristol Twisting Annie, which I guess tried to capitalize on two dances at once.
-
Jane Austen-
I have gotten into her books lately. I had read Pride and Prejudice years ago and recently re-read it and I am now reading Emma.

Ben, lovely photo of you and dear companion, Anthony.
-
Ahhh. thanks for the information CP...
-
Yep, there are a lot of variations of the understudy plot out there. And the funny thing is that DR Elmore is right--Peggy Sawyer wasn't even Dorothy Brock's actual understudy. She's just a chorine who's at the right place at the right time. Julian Marsh didn't know her from Adam.
Here's another question: why did Ginger Rogers abruptly change the lyric to "tummy" from "belly" (which would have followed the rhyme scheme) in "Shuffle Off To Buffalo"?

Interesting footnote about the Dovells. They recorded an American version of a song by an English group. But their record company dragged their feet and before it could be released, the English version came out. A little ditty called She Loves You by a group called the Beatles.
...and thus goes the course of history, my children. Now what would have happened to the Beatles, if the Dovells' version of She Loves You had been released over here first? Would the mop-tops have become as popular as they did? Who can say?

Good Evening!
Whew! Walking around the streets of New York City is always fun, always adventure, but I tend to forget how tiring it can be at times. It feels so good to be sitting down right now. :)
*However, it was great walking around midtown and "discovering" that most of the store Christmas decorations were still up. Some beautiful windows and lights to look at.
-
As for the "understudy turned star" scenario...
"Christine Daee can sing it..."
*And in a lower key. ;)
-
DR George that is an interesting question re: MEDIUM and how they portray the kids. I am now also curious if the real alison dubois has kids and what their abilities might be. I think my dad has her book so i may take a look at it.
-
Peggy Sawyer was indeed in the chorus and not an understudy....but she had five whole hours to learn the lines, songs, and dances.
-
DR CP - many of said songs/dances and Mr Checker himself were all featured in last week's DON'T KNOCK THE TWIST.
And yes - thanks for mentioning Craig again, DR TOMovOZ....he was very good in IT'S TRAD, DAD....with - who else - Jew for Jesus, Ms Helen Shapiro.

Uh-oh, the juvenile has lumbago. Dick Powell is going to have to go on in his place...even though he wrote ALL the music and lyrics....and has a mysterious past.

Thanks, DR GEORGE.
I love auditions like that....wish all of mine were!

Merlin is very handsome. We had a couple of foster kittens that looked like him.

Wow DR DtM - BELL BOOK and CANDLE had my all time FAVORITE movie Christmas Tree!!!
One of mine, too. It was always shown on The Early Show on Christmas Eve.
I missed it this year.

Oy - I've been off in another window doing more work on my dreaded volunteer project. Would much rather have been here with all you lovely people talkin' about understudies. Does it count when I was promoted from the part of Miss Fern to Monica Breedlove in my high school production of The Bad Seed? The originally-cast Monica decided she'd rather be Barbra Streisand.
-
Whew! I guess I need to ease myself back into my New York City Walking Regime... I really am "taah-red" right now. However, since I'm planning on heading out to IKEA in the morning, that may be a good thing. -Get to bed earlier, wake up earlier, etc. Guess I should actually make up the list of the shelving parts I need to buy.
-
Monica Breedlove is a terrific role. You can get laughs and tears. And you get a lot of time to just hang out in the dressing room making fun of whoever is playing the mother.
-
I have to go upstairs and reinstall Microsoft Office on my desktop.
-
DR edisaurus - The way it looks right now, I'll be in Atlanta from March 7-11. I'll be busy(!) Thursday-Saturday (8th-10th), and departing the morning of the 11th. I'm trying to see if the office will let me come in on the 6th so that I can a totally free day to explore and visit. -It's all about the convention hotel arrangements, accommodations. I might be available for dinner during my 'busy days', but I won't know my exact schedule for those days until that week. But, hopefully, we'll be able to connect when I'm down there. *And I'm sure I'll see you here in NYC when you come up for S&V too.
-
OH! And after getting the confirmation today... I'll be in Memphis from February 8-13. Anyone up for Gus' Fried Chicken? Dinstuhl's Chocolate Covered Grapes? Corky's BBQ? Rendezvous Ribs? ;)
-
What version of Pride and PRejudice did you get Matt?
The Keira Knightley one from last year.
-
Enjoyed so much sitting and laughing and crying through the deliriously happy ending of P & P. SENSE AND SENSIBILITY also has that euphoric ending that just makes the day brighter. How I love these stories!
-
UGLY BETTY had a fine episode, and I liked that it went back four months so that Betty was still Daniel's assistant. I don't know how I'm going to like her not having daily contact with him. Yes, she's just a floor away, but the vibe won't be the same. At least her home situation doesn't appear to be changing any time soon.
-
Really enjoyed CSI tonight for the first time in a long time. With William Petersen's hiatus from the show, his character was kind of making the rounds taking care of his staff in the most personable manner he's shown in six years on the show. I really enjoyed that.
The case that Nick and Catherine worked was also involving, and since they're my favorite characters on the show, it made it a memorable show for me.
Of course, I HATE the Grissom/Sara relationship, so their moment together was not a favorite, but her frown seemed to suggest there may be trouble in paradise. I hope so.
-
Since I don't watch any of the 10 p.m. shows, I went back and watched MY NAME IS EARL, a hilarious episode where the regulars found themselves as the stars of an episode of COPS from 2003. One ridiculous thing after another, and I laughed through most of the show.
-
THE OFFICE was also hilarious with Michael returning from Jamaica with something he managed to keep secret for about ten seconds. Afterwards, the usual mayhem.
And Pam's breakdown was heartrending giving the show another dimension other than just being funny.
-
Tomorrow, I'll have SCRUBS and 30 ROCK from tonight to watch. I also plucked TEXAS RANGERS (it was a Christmas gift from a year or two ago) off the to-watch shelf to look at tomorrow.
-
Back from rehearsal (brief stop-by), mixing (long and arduous for the first three songs, much easier after that), and dinner. I'm zonked, but must finish the Creature liner notes right now.
-
Heading downstairs to bed now.
Good night!
-
Well... I actually think I shall be heading to bed at a semi-normal bedtime tonight... So...
Goodnight.

Wow...strange, wild, and radial dances are at the top of my list of things to do for fun!
Polka, Waltz, Highland Fling, Bulgarian , West African, Jalisco, Hungarian, and line/box dances (modern and 19th century)
Mainly I love polka! I was part of a traditional dance troupe, and my partner David and I were dubbed the Polka King and Queen because we had so much fun and were quite good at it.
-
I'm so tiiiiired and it's only the 4th of January. I've finished the first pass at the liner notes - six pages - I'm sure we'll cut them down. I also have to title all the music tracks, which I'll try to do tonight and tomorrow morning.
-
Just posting some finally developed pictures from Bruce's Christmas Bash!
-
I also have to burn a CD with the three Creature songs - I'll have to do that in the morning or maybe later tonight.
-
Me digging into the spagetti...
-
JRand---Merlin looks elegant and wise. And very happy to be in Myrna's arms! Thanks for posting the pics!
-
Lovely Xmas spaghetti pictures, too, Adriana!
-
I'm watching Footlight Parade. Man, they had great costume designers back then, and gorgeous cinematography!
-
DR Jose, we can totally play things by ear. Since I freelance, my schedule is never predictable. If you like BBQ, I have a few favorite places in town you might like.
And then there's that bar that is a favorite of my little French boy on the night they do showtune karaoke. On second thought, that might be a form of torture to you!
-
And if our schedules don't coincide, *we* know whose fault it will be!

...and thus goes the course of history, my children. Now what would have happened to the Beatles, if the Dovells' version of She Loves You had been released over here first? Would the mop-tops have become as popular as they did? Who can say?
Well Del Shanon made hardly a ripple with "From Me To You.

DR Jose: A fellow editor friend was telling me today about a BBQ place in Memphis that he drove to from Atlanta to get some over for the holidays. I'll find out which one he went to. He brought back about 5 pounds of pulled pork and sauce and his mom put the pan in the oven. They forgot about it and it dried up, but it was such good BBQ his family ate it anyway! (Good thing he brought back the sauce!)
