When I logged on to post the new notes, there were four people on this board just sitting there like so much fish - with not one post since 10:57.  Skammen.

We are having a Christmas function here on Sunday! (Truly). We've had it for about 15 years with a group of friends - gifts and all! We started doing it when we were all working people and had too many work and family commitments in December.
The Elmore Christmas Cd will be played!

Topic of the Day:

In my CD player at work:  I don't remember...I have a whole bunch of CDs there.

In my DVD player:  nothing at the moment, but there's a big pile of DVDs that I have gotten over the last couple of weeks.  But "Torchwood" will probably be first.

On my DVR:  several shows from this past week...but I did manage to watch "Ugly Betty."  I love this show. :D

Yesterday evening, I went to the auditions for "Juno and the Paycock" and there were only four other people, including the woman who Josh (the director) has already decided that he wants to cast as the lead (she was at the first audition).  She's good!  He had originally asked me to play Joxer (it's a smaller role and since I haven't been in a non-musical for years, I prefered it that way ::)). but Josh doesn't really have anyone who can play Captain Boyle, Juno's husband, so he asked if I would play the role.  I reluctantly said yes.  Pray for Rosemary's baby!  I hope I can memorize it all...the biggest couple of roles I've ever had were Sancho Panza and Charlie Brown and it's been a long time since I've been in a show at all...AND they had music to take up a lot of time.

All right, I'm going to sleep now.

Cherry Coke!

Floop!

UNDERPANTS!

With an emphasis on the latter!
Title: Re:A LITANY OF THINGS
Post by: George on January 05, 2007, 01:56:29 AM
Anyway, there was a high school kid who obviously has had some high school theatrical training/experience, but he has...let me put this delicately...a vocal affectation that belies the virility and manliness of the characters for which he was auditioning. ::) And I don't think that he could fake an accent to save his life...affectation or not.

But the only real problem is that now that I'm playing the Captain, Josh (the director) needs someone to play Joxer and this kid is really the only person that there is (who has auditioned).  According to the script, Joxer can be younger than the Captain, but it says that he looks older.  It's one thing if the entire cast is younger, like for a school production, but for any kind of a community production, I don't think he'll be very effective playing older.  But, we'll see.  It'll be an experience for all of us, that's for sure. :)

And the word of the day is: RICTUS!
Casey would waltz
With a strawberry blonde
Nonstop, to her way of thinking,
His mouth forming a cruel RICTUS of a smile
Every time she accidentally took a misstep,
Which only made her more self-concious and error prone
As the hours of dancing wore on.

TOD:

CDs - nothing, really.  Well, OK, I stayed up late last night, unable to fall asleep, and listened to some of the OCR of Sweet Charity.  Not a good idea, really - The Rythm of Life and Big Spender are not the best of lullabyes.

DVDs - I've started watching Inferno, a Doctor Who story starring Jon Pertwee.  It's a long one, seven episodes, so this should take me a few nights.  (I like to watch them one episode at a time, rather than back to back, the way the kids hiding behind the sofa would have when they were first broadcast.)

BOOK - Michel Richard's Happy in the Kitchen - an honest ta gawd cookbook!  Richard is the chef/owner of Citronelle in DC, and before that ran Citrus in LA.  He's a former pastry chef who somehow became a savory chef, not an easy trasition to make.  Anyway, he's got some interesting ideas, and uses his tools in innovative ways - I wouldn't have thought of using a microplane grater to mince garlic, which really is a timesaver.  And the photos are cool.  And the book is heavy.  No, really, it weighs in at four pounds nine ounces.

A wonderful thing happened at work yesterday.

Reber came back.

Reber is a wonderful fellow, in charge of the non-grocery part of the grocery store, who was suddenly taken from us and sent to the hospital because of a growth on his colon.  He's had two surgeries, and we've all been quite worried about him.

Yesterday, he and his lovely wife came to the store for a visit.  He was pale, and didn't have his usual energy, but his impish sense of humor is intact.  He rode about the store on one of our electric carts, waving and chatting with everyone, customers and employees alike.  And instead of keeping his feet flat on the cart's floor, he propped them up on the motor housing, so that his knees were about level with his ears - quite the gangly sight, as he's nearly as tall as I am!

There's no telling when he'll be back to work - recovery will take some time.  I did get to tell his lovely wife how glad I was to see him, and how much I miss his being around.

At least, when the customers ask about how he's doing, I'll have something concrete to tell them.

Good morning, Elmore!

Well, I wasn't charged for taking the stitches out and Bear was such a good boy about the whole thing.  I was charged for a shot he was given for the lick wound he has that I can't seem to get healed.  He has to go back for 2 more shots in the next month.

Now I have to go back and catch up on posts for the past two days.

Good morning, all!  And a special good morning to DR Danise, whose photo with shorter hair the HHW world is awaiting!

Lordy, my life is rather flat at the moment: Toyland, NYPL, and occasional trek to St Vincent's hospital and perhaps this afternoon a round of laundry.  I also have to put my uncataloged 2006 IRS receipts into their proper envelopes so I'm ready for my accountant in February (it was the UGLY BETTY receipts problem that prompted this guilt).

I just got this new book on HAIR, which I've been perusing.  It's not the scandal-filled tome and dishy ride that Lori Davis' LETTING DOWN MY HAIR was, and this is much more of a hippie love-fest from 60 year-old hippies who did the show 4o years ago.

TOD:
CD:  Guy Haines, HAVE A HEART (Kern), BABES IN TOYLAND, Charlotte Rae's SONGS I TAUGHT MY MOTHER
DVD:  Kevin Spirtas in STRIKING RESEMBLANCE, WHO AM I THIS TIME?

As for the Topic of the Day...  Friday Media Check

CD Player - The only CD I listened to this week was the Almost-All-of-the-Original/Studio Cast of Rags.  I had been meaning to listen to this again ever since I attended a benefit concert performance of this a couple of weeks ago.  Yes, the show has always been a mess, and will most likely remain so.  Alas, the concert only ended up highlighting (lowlighting - ?) the "messy" parts of the show.  And the presentation of the concert was a bit "messy" itself.  But, hey!  It was a benefit!  :-\

DVD Player - Lots(!) of stuff on deck.  (As usual).

Ben - Seems like the "good" seats were sold out (orchestra and grand tier and mid-mezzanine) for the first five originally scheduled performances, but that if you're looking for the lower-priced seats (rear mezz or gallery), they still have some even for those perfs.   But they've added an additional perf on Feb 2/12 at 7 pm, for which they say they're only selling to AmEx Gold Card holders right now, and at this point, that perf seems to have tix at all levels.

I'm hoping several NYCers get to go to FOLLIES and tell us all about it. I did see the disappointing Roundabout revival a few years ago, but since I saw the original, just about anything would be disappointing in comparison to that.

I pulled out the laserdisc to APRIL IN PARIS because of reading about the upcoming (in April) Doris Day DVD boxed set. I like all of the films they're going to put in there except LUCKY ME (it's not awful, just mediocre compared to the others). I would rather APRIL IN PARIS or TEA FOR TWO had been substituted, so I'm watching APRIL IN PARIS at some point today.

Loved reading the dance song trivia yesterday. I am a fan of both the Dovells and the Orlons.

More Dovells trivia I didn't see mentioned: lead Dovell Len Barry went on to have one great hit of his own: "One, Two Three."

The Dovells' story will be immortalized in the new Broadway production: PHILLY BOYS.

I always thought The Dovells were British as well, until I saw them in the movie DON'T KNOCK THE TWIST. They perform THE  BRISTOL STOMP, but I couldn't tell if what they were doing on stage was the dance or not...and the audience was all seated, so...

I did enjoy them in that film and I have one of their CDs someplace.

Gold Diggers of 1933. Great stuff last night. Warren William rules. But Guy Kibbee is hilarious. I was also enjoying Footlight Parade before I conked out. Also with Kibbee, but here Hugh Herbert is the laugh riot. That guy's every facial expression cracks me up.

So...what are we gonna do about it?

Well, I'll start by putting away all the Christmas decorations.  And, following the lead of DR Cillaliz, I've been working on preliminary preparations for a conference/vacation trip for DH Richard and myself: Washington, DC, June 23-July 1, for the American Library Association Annual Conference.

Here at work, the Grantseeking Basics workshop that I present every month needs revamping (new PowerPoint, new handouts).  And 2 college instructors called yesterday to set up times for me to guest-lecture their students.  In the last 10 minutes, 2 of my nonprofit clients have stopped by to chat and next week the professional organizations start up their regular schedules again.

And, in my dreaded volunteer project, which is actually planning a state-wide conference, only 4 of the 36 total hours are still out of focus.  I may have a telephonic conversation this evening that'll help with that.

I have to read over my Creature notes - I'm walking a fine line in them, because I want them to be positive - most know I was not thrilled with some of the score, and I'm not going to lie about that, but I also don't want it to be negative about the composer - so, I'm being careful about how I'm writing it.

Then I must type up the cue titles.  I've already done a CDR of the songs.  Interestingly, the final cue of the film was not used the way it was recorded - I ended up using the first half of it and editing it onto an earlier cue that matched what the action was better.

I also remembered quite a bit about the casting of the film, which I've never written about and which, I think, will be interesting to people.

At the end, when Betty was explaining her deal with Mark -- the one in which she gave him her Gucci bag (which he did not know was a knock-off) in exchange for a knockoff bag from down the street -- what was the "rest" of the deal?  It happened so fast, I didn't hear what else she asked of him.

She asked for a big favor at some point in the future.  Good episode although at first I was confused because it seemed like a repeat.

MBarnum's post above about his favorite title reminded me, indirectly, of the worst thing I ever heard someone say in a group of people.

I'm not sure I should actually post it, but perhaps it will spur a reminiscence or two of the worst thing you ever heard anyone say in a public place (or in private, for that matter).

WARNING:  Apply a Raunch Factor of 5 to the following, 5 being the highest factor number.

I taught military journalism at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana, from 1979-1984.

All the military services had their Public Affairs personnel trained at the Defense Information School (now located in Maryland) -- or, DINFOS, as it is known.

Each of my classes was made up of Army, Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps students, most of whom were ages 18-22.

I recall during one class period, circa 1980, I was explaining to my class (I had an average of 18-20 students at a time) that each branch of service had its own unique ways of doing things.   The class I taught was to prepare them to work on a base newspaper.

We talked about various base papers that were well-known and representative of diverse local military and civilian audiences.

One student said he hoped he'd be assigned to some base or other, so asked him why.  He gave an answer.  Another student did the same.  And another and another, etc.

Finally, one of my Navy women (who was 19, funny and a bit of a plain jane) said she wanted to be assigned to the paper in Rota, Spain.  When I asked why she said, "They have a Marine Barracks there.  I want to find a Marine and spend my tour sitting on his face."

I had to give the class a break after the laughter died down.

Still....it was a pretty awful thing to say in a group of people, even if she was being honest.

You could always get a job as a cat groomer, or cat sitter.

Some folks here in the Bay Area make a fine living being cat sitters....folks hire them to come to their homes while they are away...and to clean the litter daily, feed the cat(s) twice a day...and to sit and play with the cat(s) for a half-hour or so.

Kennels can be as expensive as $60-$80 a day, depending on what needs your animal has.  A cat sitter can probably get a following charging $25 per animal...which might include administering medications or shots for cats with special needs/diabetes.  You might even have to administer saline under the skin.

BUT you can charge extra for that skill.

Sausage Man

"George Johnson of Richmond, Calif., who died recently at 112, not only defied the actuarial tables but did so on a diet of mostly sausages and waffles.  Despite his high-calorie, fat-laden food choices, Johnson's autopy revealed that the World War I veteran had the organs of someone in his 50s or 60s."

Isn't this what we were talking about here at HHW last night?  And DR George was out there becoming a star!

Congratulations and memorizing vibes!

Ginny asked:

So, DR Ben, how's your first week back to work?  I just initiated our library's purchase of a new set of Grant Guides (we hadn't updated since 2001).

How interesting, Ginny. You may see the books before I do. Usually they are on my desk when I return. This year they were published on time but due to some fulfillment issues which were not fully explained to me, I don't have my copy of 12. The books have been completely redesigned. The information is still the same but the layout and covers are all new. Even though it had a complete redesign they couldn't find a way to put my name on the book. I don't ask for much but that would be nice. Oh, well. At least I still get to take the month of December off.

In answer to your question, my first week back has been pleasant and without problems. A couple of people have decided to leave (one a relative newby and another a long-time employee) but neither departure will have an effect on my work. I have eased back into the process, cleaning up the little bit of work that was left on my desk in my absence and finishing two grant files for the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation. Next week we get paid and I get my bonus check (excuse me, I misspeak, my Incentive Compensation Award). I will not be eligible for a bonus in 2007 because for the past three years I have received an "Incentive Compensation Award" (AKA bonus) For Exceptional Overall Performance During the Year and the powers that be have decided that if you receive a bonus three years in a row you must be taken out of the bonus pool for one year. Talk about incentive!

Anyway, things are good here at the FC overall and I have little to complain about, so I won't.

This is the longest post I have had in many months, I think.

I think I've mentioned this before but in the early to mid-80s I was friendly with Kathy Kibbee, Guy's grandaughter. She went to school with a dear friend of mine and they re-connected around 1984 and kept in touch. She married a man from England and moved across the pond. She visited over here and when we were traveling in 1988 we spent a couple of days with her and her husband and children. It was a wonderful time. I should try to find one of the pictures and post it.

Well, my order for the stamps has officially been rejected.  Their reasons were because the image could be of a famous person (it's not) and possible copyright infringement. ::)

That's a great idea George! Maybe we should make them for S&V or The Internationale. Glad your library bought 4 copies, and that it's getting requested!

In the event that anyone has a desire to download some vintage Bollywood soundtrack LPs (and really now, who doesn't have that desire?) here is a nifty link. The guy has a box of 150 LPs he is putting up as downloadable MP3s...a different one every day.

Wow!  "Heroes" are coming out of the woodwork in NYC.

First, there was the man who threw himself on top of a man who had fallen onto the subway tracks.

And now two men have caught a child (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070105/ap_on_re_us/heroic_catch) who fell out of a 4th floor window.

IT's good to know people are there to help.

I'm hoping several NYCers get to go to FOLLIES and tell us all about it. I did see the disappointing Roundabout revival a few years ago, but since I saw the original, just about anything would be disappointing in comparison to that.

Please get ready to load us up with information and opinions.

I love the fact that Chubby Checker's career arc reached the point where he did a dance song based on the leaping dance done by the guy from Freddie and the Dreamers. AND that the song actually made the American Top 40!

And speaking of Mr. Checker (Chubs to his friends), next weekend he will be headlining at the Emerald Queen Casino here in Tacoma.

Rodzinski, did you see that there are several Wheeler and Woolsey films scheduled on TCM this month?

I don't guess one of them is RIO RITA (1930), is it? I am really desperate to see this early musical. I don't know why I have DIXIANA on DVD and have never even seen the first version of RIO RITA even on TV. I know it will look and sound primitive, but after reading about it in several books and hearing Bebe Daniels sing "You're Always in My Arms," I'd really love to see the whole thing.

I agree completely. In fact, I was desvastated that Alexis Smith (who was certainly flashy) won the Tony over Dorothy who absolutely broke my heart with her performance. And as much as I admire and think the world of Barbara Cook, she didn't come close to Dorothy's "Losing My Mind." And the less said of Judith Ivey, the better.

I watched a couple of CSI episodes to begin my afternoon. I started with a fantasy dream vacation for a guy from LA that turned fatal for him through an innocent misunderstanding. The other episode, called "Rashomama" had four different viewpoints of a murder at a wedding. Veronica Cartwright played the victim, the mother of the groom. The case was complicated by Nick's truck, which contained all the gathered evidence, being stolen while they had breakfast at a diner. Thus, they had to build their case from the few remaining clues not compromised by the theft.

Offbeat episode and a good one.

I ended the afternoon with TEXAS RANGERS. A friend gave me this movie for Christmas several years ago saying that he knew I'd enjoy it. I rather doubted it and put off watching it until today. Surprise! It was entertaining. I thought it was going to be MTV Goes West, but it was actually a pretty good history of the reformation of the Texas Rangers ten years after the end of the Civil War. Good actors in the cast: James Van Der Beek, Dylan McDermott, Robert Patrick, Tom Skerritt, Alfred Molina. Ashton Kutcher was his usual ridiculous self (almost ruined the movie for me). Singer Randy Travis gave a very good performance in this; he should be doing more films.

Well directed, a pleasing script with some reasonable surprises, and a nice transfer (if a tad dark) with excellent Dolby Digital sound. Best of all, it ran about 100 minutes, perfect for this kind of story.

The thing about Barbara Cook's interpretation of "In Buddy's Eyes" is that she's singing the song as it's written and Sondheim himself has said that the song is about Sally trying to stick it to Ben...the subtext is that she's trying to make Ben jealous of what he could have had.  Barbara just sings the song as a lovely love song about her husband, which is (from what I've read) totally wrong for that moment in the show.

It was on The Ed Sullivan Show when it was released.  What is so strange about that?  Well it wasn't a clip from the movie...the cast acted out one of the scenes on the show.  It was long and drawn and out and VERY unfunny....and everyone seemed very desperate.  I don't remember any other movie that did the same thing...although I could be wrong.

George, congratulations on being cast as Captain Boyle.  I don't envy you the role.  Boyle is an incredibly tough role for an actor, and the whole show is such a downer for the audience.

:o NOW you tell me!

Der Brucer is snacking while watching television.  He popped some brie in the nuker, for a quick warm-up, put slices of the brie on crackers, and now is topping the brie with spoonfulls of Robert Rothschild's Hot Pepper Raspberry Preserves (http://www.peppers.com/viewimage.cfm?id=4320&type=1).  It's tasty, but not that spicy, not really.  That's his opinion of the stuff (and I concur).

But somehow he wasn't that eager to try putting a little bit of Professor Phardtpounder's Colon Cleaner Hot Sauce (http://www.peppers.com/viewimage.cfm?id=2235&type=1).  Shame, I find it a tasty blend of Scotch Bonnet peppers and mustard, mostly the former.

Ah, well.

Jack MacGowran, who played Joxer in JUNO, was the stepfather of my first New York apartment mate.  If you have Dawn Upshaw's "I Wish It So" you already have a copy of the greatest song in the score.

Good Evening!

"Dreamgirls" actually stood up well to a second viewing.  And the theatre was practically empty.  In fact, when we took our seats, we were the first two people in there.  A couple of rows in front of and behind us did fill up, but I'd have to say the Ziegfeld was maybe only about 10-15% full.  A small, but appreciative audience.

I still got chills in some places, and Jennifer Hudson's performances elicited applause and a few cheers from those in attendance.  It's a very good movie, not a great one.  And I don't mind some of the plot tinkering they did from the original stage version.  *Although, I do miss Deena's portion of "When I First Saw You."  However, I have to say Jamie Foxx's performance underwhelmed me even more this time round.  He just seemed to have that "smell the fart" look on his face throughout.  I'm surprised he hasn't changed his name to "Jamie "Oscar Winner" Foxx".  ;)

In any case... It was good to see the movie again.

And, afterwards, we stopped into the lobby of Le Parker Meridien for burgers and fries at "The Burger Joint".  Very good burgers, and such a neat, funky place.  There is literally one area of the hotel lobby that was turned into a burger joint.  And the sign for the place is not that visible from the lobby proper, so it's kind of hidden.  -Which is a good thing, since the place can get quite crowded - it sits 40-45 max.  But, again, it's a great place for a cooked-and-dressed-to-order burger.  Good shakes too!  :)

Well, I'll start by putting away all the Christmas decorations.  And, following the lead of DR Cillaliz, I've been working on preliminary preparations for a conference/vacation trip for DH Richard and myself: Washington, DC, June 23-July 1, for the American Library Association Annual Conference.

I find that this time of year, if I have something to look forward to - like my trip to New York - my spirits are a lot higher.  I  often decide on certain plans, change my mind, change it back etc....I know I've really made up my mind when I buy a ticket.  It's very frustrating to people who don't know I do that....

Anyway, I have my plane tickets, my hotel reservations and a ticket to CURTAINS the first night I'm there.  I'm actually considering not getting other tickets until I get there.  There just isn't anything I'm dying to see.  Although, I got an email for a discount on Spring Awakening through mid or late March....so it's tempting...

I finished up disc 5 of CSI tonight (which contains the rest of the Season 6 episodes; disc 6 is all special features). The last two episodes dealt with the shooting of Lt. Jim Brass, the case that ended in his shooting, and his subsequent struggle to live.

The last episode, of course, contained the controversial (and for me much despised) scene with Gil and Sara revealing their on-going affair.
