Least favorite theatre candy: Baked Beans. In fact, I never ate one. We used to throw them at the screen when we were kids because thiey made a loud sound, which we enjoyed.
We also used to like to smuggle lightening bugs into the theatre and release them during the movie.
We obviously had no reverence for the moviegoing experience when we were very young.

DR MattH, I gave the "Life After Tomorrow" DVD to my Closer producer friend. This was the last day we'll do Closer work because she's moving on to another series and was kind of sad about it. The thought of watching that when she got home cheered her up immensely. Thanks again for sending it!

I bought the new Meat Loaf album. He has 2 songs from "Dance of the Vampires" on it. One was "Angels Arise" but it had different words and a different title--I think it was "Cry, Baby, Cry".

Good morning, all! I have an early trip to Toyland this morning. We're are nearly finished with Volume One of the full score. I spent a great deal of the day yesterday rewriting my notes on the new edition and I still have yet to write detailed blurbs on the two different Finales to Acts One and Two for the original production and the stock-amateur package. I've so far, on every attempt, painted myself into a corner, knowing what I want to say but clearly not saying it!
I'm having the same problem with the LADY IN THE DARK book that I had with HOW SONDHEIM GOT HIS SOUND: musicologists with no practical theatre background trying to convey theatrical history and production information about the people surrounding the main person they're interested in, namely Kurt Weill and Stephen Sondheim. I'm enjoying the book, but I keep thinking about missing links.

Jose, regarding the "new members" they aren't really members. They are auto registered by "pings" when BK posts new notes. A "ping" notifies the world that a new post is up at a blog and some servers will send out responses which result in the not really "new members". That may not all be technically correct but that's the essence of why we have a large membership including many members of a seeming sexual nature.

And I have to thank you, DR Edi, for even letting me know about this documentary's existence. I knew nothing about it before you asked if someone could record it for you, and I must say it's given me enormous pleasure every time I've watched it.
I can't imagine that anyone who even liked the stage musical ANNIE wouldn't want to see this. It's a really interesting look at life for a child inside a huge hit musical.

My local CBS affiliate is preempting CSI: NY tonight to show an ACC basketball game. Oh, they're going to show CSI: NY at 3 a.m., but they NEVER record the high definition feed despite numerous requests that they do so. They say CBS won't let them record the HD version if they're going to show it on a delay.
I also suggested that they show the ACC basketball on their analog channel and CSI: NY on their HD/digital channel. That suggestion was met with stony silence.

I have four hours of TV programs from last night to catch up with today. Of course, BONES has two reruns tonight which I probably won't watch (they're on the DVD set I already have).
There is a new KNIGHTS OF PROSPERITY and a new MEDIUM tonight. Everything else I watch tonight will be previously recorded material on the DVR or DVDs.
BTW, the President is speaking tonight, so that's going to throw start times off for some shows.

When I arrived at work, we were working on a most glorious sunrise.
The sky was clear overhead, but there were clouds around the sun and the effect was magic with golds and pinks shimmering on the horizon.
I turned my head for a moment or two...and when I looked again, a dense fog had rolled in. It's still out there, too. So thick you can barely see anything.

Well, if we kidnapped an "in the process" young man on his eighteenth birthday and treated him to a different environment for three years, then returned him home, he most likely would have matured (in some fashion or other).
The best intentioned parent living in an economically deprived neighborhood has a very rough time helping his son "grow up" as we would like. Placing the youngster in an environment where he is regularly subjected to positive adult male role models is likely to help.
I think most 18 year-olds can benefit from a change in environment - they have to get away from the family cave to complete the maturation process.
I agree that the Army is taking too much credit for a natural growth process.
Even if the Military had no effect on a young man, his Dad would view him in a different (generally more positive) light when he returned.

It's snowing in Washington! I don't know how far away from the Tumwater/Olympia area the snow is falling, but it's coming down now. I hope I can find my big winter coat! :o I can only find my light glorified windbreaker. ::) I'm pretty sure that it's somewhere in my extra bedroom and not in storage. That wouldn't be good.

If I’m going to analyze this, it’s possible the son did learn it from the father, just didn’t “get it” or wasn’t willing until he had been away from home. Or, as it appears, he didn’t learn it from his father in the first place.
I think you feel about this commercial the way I feel about the ending of The Titanic. No matter what anyone says, or will say to me, I am adamant it was absolutely ridiculous & senseless to toss that necklace into the ocean. :D

It's geared toward young men who don't feel their fathers/families give them enough respect, IMO.
Of course, what they've done to earn respect is another question.
And another question is how much does a young man or woman have to do to get a response from the folks?
I see the whole thing as a blatant scam to make parents think their children will be immeasurably changed and for young people to think the service is a magic bullet toward adulthood.
But I'd think most parents...especially fathers...would be insulted to think their legal-aged sons had to join the Army to learn how to do something as basic as proffering a firm handshake and looking someone in the eye.
I had that lesson at age 12.

That particular episode was interesting (I did three in all) - I got a call from Cindy at about one in the afternoon. She and Penny were apoplectic because the producers had basically hired an extra to play the organist in the roller skating ring. And he couldn't do anything funny and they had nothing to play off of and the scene was dying over and over. She asked if I'd come down and just "do" it. I was down there a half-hour later, we ran the scene, and we filmed it twice shortly thereafter, with me just doing whatever came to me. After the show, they did inserts of me doing lines, and that was that. My then manager was very upset that after I'd done them the favor they were sticking my name on a card with two other actors, and in third position - so, as a nice gesture, they gave me the guest-starring role in the next episode - the one where I played the director of army hygeine films.

I presume you mean the kids show - it's a live theater interactive rock-and-roll show for kids (four to ten is the target age) - the hope for it, obviously, is to click and ultimately become a TV show, like The Doodlebops or The Whiggles.

When I was a kid I always loved playing cowboy - I never once played war or soldier. So, no, I was never attracted to military service. And I'm saving my tales about the draft for either a short story or a novel.

I think I had quite a low number when they did that. But, it was abolished before anything happened with the numbers. It wouldn't have mattered anyway - I'd already made certain I would never be drafted. And therein lies the tale.

Those who've read the Kritzer books know all about my favorite movie theater candies. Sno-Caps for sure. If I had no money, those suckers - what was the name of them? It's on the tip of my tongue and won't come to me. I loved frozen U-No bars, and occasionally would do Bon-Bon's, though they were messy. In my day, they didn't sell licorice or anything like that. I didn't do Ju-Ju Bees or the other popular gummy (Juicy something - why can't I remember anything this morning) because they stuck in my teeth and that skeeved me. I tended not to go for candy bars because they didn't last as long as things like Sno-Caps.

My gosh it is cold here today. We have been having such warm weather (a few days ago it was 10C, 50F). But today i just saw it was -19C with windchill. I think that is around -10F or some other ridiculous temp.

I liked Helen's songs and the guy...was it Craig? I really liked their duets, the other songs were okay.
I keep thinking what would have happened if EMI Capital had gotten Helen's recording of IT'S MY PARTY out before Mercury hit with Lesley Gore's version? From what I've read, it was ready, they just didn't push it and so Helen NEVER made it in the US....what was it, one song at number 100 for one week. And who knows how many POP stories there are like that out there?

Well, if we kidnapped an "in the process" young man on his eighteenth birthday and treated him to a different environment for three years, then returned him home, he most likely would have matured (in some fashion or other).
The best intentioned parent living in an economically deprived neighborhood has a very rough time helping his son "grow up" as we would like. Placing the youngster in an environment where he is regularly subjected to positive adult male role models is likely to help.
I think most 18 year-olds can benefit from a change in environment - they have to get away from the family cave to complete the maturation process.
I agree that the Army is taking too much credit for a natural growth process.
Even if the Military had no effect on a young man, his Dad would view him in a different (generally more positive) light when he returned.

Had a fine afternoon with some entertaining shows and one film.
I began with last night's BOSTON LEGAL. Parts of it were very funny (Staner, being his usual goofy character), but james Spader's closing argument was so stirring, so moving that it brought me to tears. The show can be grandly effective when it has something important to say.

From there, I watched last night's LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT. A disturbing hour of husband and wife separation/divorce squabbles, I never knew who was lying. As it turned out, everyone was including their child.
What would these shows be if people only told the truth?

I ended my afternoon viewing with another True Life Adventure, this time from Volume 3: THE AFRICAN LION.
Like THE VANISHING PRAIRIE in Volume 2, Disney had cleaned this movie up tremendously sharpening focus, making color richer and fuller, and thus making it thoroughly enjoyable to watch. The image is so sharp you can see the numerous flies on the bodies of the animals in repose. Amazing stuff and solidly entertaining.

Now, I'll have last night's VERONICA MARS rerun to watch again and I have the True-Life short subject BEAR COUNTRY cued up in the DVD player.
I also got some Blu-ray discs in the mail this afternoon, but I don't know if they'd be time to watch one all the way through tonight.

One of my cousins and his wife went to Rome last year. Saw everything BUT la fontana Trevi.
They didn't have a map...and had too little time to pursue it.
I told him he should have called me from his cell phone and I would have directed him properly. He could have walked there in five minutes from the Pantheon.

As fun as it would seem to release them at the movies, I wouldn't do that because they would just kill the poor little things. I was upset the other day because I couldn't catch the lady bug that was in the room at my doctors office with me. I told the nurse about it and she said she would get a broom (!) and "get it" after I left. I'm sure I know what she did and it wasn't a release back to the wild.

The "bloodless coup" that I referred to the other day happened and jobs that I had booked have been yanked over to a different post house. So the place you sent them will hold on to them for me and I'll pick them up Friday night. The new place is closed on the weekends, and I will be there again on Monday, but Tuesday I leave for NY and drive to Boston (S&V is the opening night film at Boston's Human Rights Watch film festival) so I won't be back until the weekend and back at work on the 22nd. Sorry the window of opportunity is shut for a few days but I should have plenty of time at night when I get back.

I have a recommendation if anyone is looking for a cheap place to stay in Rome. A lovely terrace apartment that a former film editor rents out to friends. We stayed there when we were shooting S&V.

Did you see it last week, DR JRand? I can't make up my mind about it. It certainly hasn't been compelling in the way that THE SHIELD and RESCUE ME were almost immediately, but at the same time, since I LOVE show biz so much, the show does draw me into the stories.

If I’m going to analyze this, it’s possible the son did learn it from the father, just didn’t “get it” or wasn’t willing until he had been away from home. Or, as it appears, he didn’t learn it from his father in the first place.
I think you feel about this commercial the way I feel about the ending of The Titanic. No matter what anyone says, or will say to me, I am adamant it was absolutely ridiculous & senseless to toss that necklace into the ocean. :D

Hearing all those old ABBA songs isn't the real joy of "Mamma Mia." It's seeing how someone has knitted them together into a fairly clever story.
Realizing their kitsch factor, writer Catherine Johnson has given stuff like "Take a Chance on Me" and "Does Your Mother Know" new life. Her one-liners are pretty cool, too, making this one jukebox musical you wouldn't mind seeing twice.
Set on a Greek island, the show (which opened Tuesday at the Orpheum Theatre and runs through Sunday) poses a big wedding eve question: Who's your daddy?
Unsure who her biological father is, Sophie Sheridan (Carrie Manolakos) sends letters to three suspects, inviting them to the ceremony. Since they all figured prominently in her mother's diary, she's sure she's going to discover the truth. Mom (Laurie Wells), though, wants no part of the scheme and does her best to keep the father figures from walking her daughter down the aisle.
Meanwhile, two of mom's friends (Lisa Mandel and Laura Ware) show up for the event, helping her remember those days that preceded Sophie's birth. The walk down memory lane calls for Spandex, platform shoes and a whole lot of fun.
The three women, in fact, steal every scene they're in. Ware, in particular, knows how to turn a good bit into a great one. When she sets her sights on Bill Austin (Milo Shandel), the Australian "suspect," "Mamma Mia" finds its soul sister and many, many laughs. Ware and Shandel share "Take a Chance on Me" and deserve every laugh they get.
Mandel doesn't coast, either. A serial bride, she knows men -- but she's surprised someone younger (Enrico Rodriguez, a great dancer) has taken a shine to her. They share a similarly cute moment, giving "Mamma Mia" one of those surprises that doesn't come from a confetti cannon.
Director Phyllida Lloyd works overtime with many scenes, helping the songs along with some very smart business. She has a rousing second act opener. Freaked about what she has done, Sophie has a nightmare in which friends and family are dressed in swimwear and she's "Under Attack." In a million years the song wouldn't work in a more conventional show. Here, thanks to Manolakos and those great dancers, it's right at home.
Best of all, the folks behind "Mamma Mia" don't expect anyone to take it seriously. When Wells has a few of those moments, the songs are truncated, giving the audience just enough of a grounding to work. When she's handed "I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do," she provides the perfect button to an imperfect suit.
The three men -- Shandel, Ian Simpson and Sean Allan Krill -- couldn't be more different. Each shared a key moment with Sophie's mom. Each has a viable claim to her heart. But who's the one? Because the three actors are so evenly matched, their hands aren't tipped. And when you discover the truth, you'll understand why it's the best answer of all.
Like a wedding dance that features all the right songs, "Mamma Mia" leaves you with a nice glow. It's not a taxing show, just a great night out.
But don't head for the doors once you see the actors bow.
There's still plenty of show left (and those much-promised Spandex jumpsuits and platform boots) after the I Do's have been said. The post-show concert, in fact, is like a wedding reception. It's sweeter than a big ol' piece of cake and more lively than a dollar dance with the bride.
"Mamma Mia" continues through Sunday. Shows are at 7:30 p.m. today through Friday; 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 2 and 7 p.m. Sunday.

Well, I really wasn't in the mood for ice cream earlier, but I happened to walk by the new pinkberry (http://www.pinkberry.com) location. I had read about it a couple of weeks ago - basically, the frozen yogurt "to the stars". -And, yes, it started in LA (IIRC). So, since I walked by it, and I happened to be in need of some nourishment...
It's an interesting set up. Just two flavors: Plain and Green Tea. And it's truly frozen yogurt, yogurt that is frozen. So, it has a bit of a tang - I just tried the Plain. You can order a Small, Medium or Large. I just got a small today. The catch is that you top it with various toppings: Wet (blueberries, raspberries, mango, kiwi, etc.), and/or Dry (chocolate chips, carob chips, Cap'n Crunch, Fruity Pebbles, etc.). And you are charged for each topping - My small with two toppings came to $5.26. Not exactly a true cheap eat. But since it only has 20 calories per ounce...
In any case, I enjoyed it, but it's not a place/product I would go out of my way to get to if I had a craving. And when I was there, the place was practically empty. Apparently, in WeHo and elsewhere, it's become known as "crackberry" since it's been so addictive. Lines out the door, lots of parking tickets issued, etc. This is the first NYC location to open. It's on 32nd St. in the heart of Korea-town. Interesting location. There are other locations planned in Chelsea, Upper East Side, etc. It will be interesting to see how and if the chain takes hold here. -And maybe the warmer temps will help too.

I, too, am underwhelmed. However, I have to say that I'm "intrigued" by Brian Dennehy as Alfred Doolittle. But I'm very happy with Marni Nixon playing Mrs. Higgins. I wonder if they're going to go with someone established or someone "stunt-y" for Freddy.

THAT DARN CAT!!! Boo did some weird running leap, landed on the cords going to my desktop and I can no longer get on the internet from that computer. I was, and am, extremely irritated, but the fact I can get on here means the connection is getting as far as the wireless router which also goes into the desktop. So, I'll have to try to fix it tomorrow. I do have to admit the leap was pretty funny, it's like she wasn't sure whether she wanted to land on the file cabinet (too low) or the desk (too far to the right).

Sounds like something just got loosened during the leap. The easy fix should just be to disconnect everything for a few minutes, unplug the modem, then reconnect and power back up. Otherwise...

Well, thanks to George and Jane talking about it, Tacoma is now having a mini-blizzard of snow. It arrived just before the deep freeze that is due to settle-in late this evening and last through the weekend.

I disconnected, unplugged and did all that before. So I opened up the computer checked that all connections were tight. Closed it up...no dice...so I uninstalled all my network and ethernet cards restarted the computer and when they reinstalled it worked fine. I'm baffled why that worked, but it did

What a semi-disappointing night of TV. Ended up watching three reruns where I expected there to be only two.
I began, however, with the Blu-ray version of FLIGHTPLAN. I saw the movie on Starz! the first time (not in HD; our cable service doesn't offer Starz-HD), so seeing it so clear and sharp was a new experience. I did like the set-up but felt the film fell apart more and more as it progressed. Just too many coincidences to keep me from rolling my eyes a bit. I'll give it to Jodie Foster, though. She obviously believed very deeply in the film because she acts it as though it's a masterpiece of construction. I believed her even when the rest of the film was sort of disintegrating before my eyes.

I knew BONES was going to be a rerun, but it was from this season so I did watch it. As it turned out, it picked up with a serial killer character from the first season (whose episode I just rewatched a week or so ago), so I enjoyed the episode more this second time around since I remembered the character so clearly.

Next I put on VERONICA MARS, the rerun with Patty Hurst as a primary guest star. As the campus rapist story was coming to its conclusion, I thought I had it figured out by the time of this episode. Watching it again, I can see why I went in the wrong direction.

I was all primed for MEDIUM, and wouldn't you know it? NBC changed its plans at the last minute and substituted a rerun from last season instead of tonight's scheduled new episode.
And I had just watched this episode from the MEDIUM DVD set last week (the one where she dreams about the male child she lost early in her marriage), so I turned it off.

I went back to the FLIGHTPLAN Blu-ray disc and watched the special features on the disc, two featurettes about the construction of the model plane and also the interior design for the jet.
One of the things that selected Blu-ray discs have is something called "Movie Showcase" which isolates three reference quality video/audio moments from the film to short cut for friends if you want to show off the system but don't want to run the entire film.
There is also a five minute show piece called "Jet Stream" which is a high definition flight over banks of clouds to watch the sun set. In high def, it's pretty spectacular.

Oh, I went to get some coffee this morning and someone was at the counter ahead of me so I was looking around and saw a bowl of chocolates shaped like the world.
I looked up and noticed it was someone who is a friend, who I've been a little interested in, so I turned around, offered him one and said "Don't ever say I didn't give you the world"
I started to say I was joking but he said "You can't offer the world if you don't plan to deliver" So I put the world on my tab and we had coffee before work. It was a fun way to start the day

I ended the evening watching an episode from Lisa Kudrow's one season HBO comedy THE COMEBACK. How I miss this show! And I have meant to buy the DVD set during one of the various Deep Discount sales. I must remember the next time they have one.

I am full...I went to my mom's today and she served up a nice pot roast for dinner. Then we watched the Audie Murphy / Susan Cabot western DUEL AT SILVER CREEK.
None of the characters had names...just Brown Eyes or Lightning or The Silver Kid or Johnny Sombrero...it got a bit silly after awhile.

In any case... I'm a bit sore too after my run yesterday. I can definitely feel the lactic acid build up in my quads. -Which is why I wanted to get out for a bit earlier today, just to walk/work it out. I'm hoping to get a run in tomorrow, but the scheduling could be tricky. We'll see.
*However, I did pick up a new pair of earphones. And after Google-ing for a while, I found the proper way that they're meant to "twist to fit". Very cool.

I got home from the screening just in time to say goodnight. All those pictures of Turkey makes me regret even more that I didn't go to the film festival a few months back when they screened S&V. Glad it's safer for tourists now!

The screening of the human trafficking film was great---totally packed house, hundreds of people. It was very well-received and there was a town hall meeting afterwards with some experts speaking on the subject. That will be edited and shown after the film airs on PBS. It will also air on the Hallmark Channel.
If anyone is interested in the topic, you can check your local listings at their website: www.livesforsale.com It is running on @ 60% of the PBS stations so far. I cut the promo on the website, and if you look at the photo gallery, there's my DH in Mexico.
