Well, you've read the notes, you read them and didn't procrastinate, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they've been procrastinating for the last five years - sort of the Jason Robert Brown of cows.

Actually, this is an example of a fine feat of prestidigitation - everyone around these here parts has disappeared.

Well, perhaps I'll perform another feat of prestidigitation and make myself go from the laptop to my bed. Say abra-cadabra!

Hmmm - didn't quite work yet.
Welcome five GUESTS! Why don't one of you say abra-cadabra and appear and make a fershluganah post?
-
Well, let's see if we can perform the amazing laptop to bed trick and make it work: ABRA-CADABRA!

My favorite magician is Ben Mack. He is also a champion poker player and a fire-eater. In fact, he wrote the book on fire-eating! Fire Eating: A Manual of Instruction.
When we put a contract on our house, there were already 2 contracts ahead of us with different contingencies. There were also quite a few others in line after us. (The house had been on the market for 1 day!)
I really bonded with Ben. We had the same political leanings and he also was a huge Bill Hicks fan. He does a fundraiser every year for the Bill Hicks foundation--I think it raises money for endangered species---called a "rant-off" where people can get up and rant about whatever and other people pay to watch and to rant!). I had some very rare Bill Hicks stuff that he was able to donate to the archives/Bill's family. (BK might enjoy the rant-off!)
It took us over a week before we could figure out if we could swing it financially. These other potential buyers were pestering the realtor to show it to them, but Ben said he didn't want to show it to anyone else while we were still deciding!
We finally put a contract on it and left to take my mom and friends on a 2 week tour of Ireland. While we were gone, several other people tried to talk Ben into weaseling out of his contract with us...that they would pay him a considerable amount more. He didn't even consider their offers. He is a real mensch and my favorite magician.
During the closing, we had down time while the realtor (who turned out to be a local actor I knew from projects I worked on) was on the phone or tending to his baby daughter, so Ben entertained us with some pretty amazing card tricks. And as he is such an expert poker player (wrote a book about that, too!) we did wonder if he used any of his techinques on us when we negotiated the price.
An actor real estate agent seeling a house for a magician...I'm glad they were honest!

I have always been fascinated by Harry Houdini---I've read several books about him and seen a few good and not-so-good movies. I would have loved to have seen his act in person.

Funnily, Ben's Fire Eating book survived our fire. It is charred, but I keep it around and tell people that I mis-read one of the instructions.

The documentary LIVES FOR SALE (http://www.livesforsale.com/press.html)seems to be conflating voluntary, howbeit illegal, immigration of labor with the forced enslavement of humans sold for profit.
A fundamental distinction needs to be made based on whether or not the person, once here, is free to return.
The vast majority of the voluntrary illegal immigrants enter accross our southern border, the vast majority of slaves enter through our ports or, in the case of domestic help, arrive, legally, by air.

Back in the Seventies, I went to see Hallelujah Hollywood (or whatever it was called) at the original MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Part of that show was this fantastic pair of magicians named Siegfried and Roy. They weren't headliners yet, but their act was the most incredible magic act I had ever seen.
I also enjoy David Copperfield, but I haven't seen him perform in a number of years.

I have been awake for two hours now, and the only vehicles I have seen going by outside my apartment are buses. There hasn't been a single car, yet.

Interesting! I just went to S & R's offical web site, and I could not find any reference in their biography to them ever having appeared at the MGM Grand when they came to Vegas. However, I know I am correct, because I remember the big moment of their act, at the time, was making the MGM lion (that had opened the show with a big roar) disappear.

Today should be interesting - we're holding a job fair, to fill in some of the non-cashier positions that have opened up.

DRs Jose and DearReaderLaura, thanks for filling in for me last night on keeping DR MBarnum in check. That posting was begging for critical commentary.
I finished the LADY IN THE DARK book; I enjoyed it very much, and I recommend it to all of you DRs.
TOD: I never saw Doug Henning in THE MAGIC SHOW; I saw the national tour with Joseph Abbaldo in the role, and the magic was truly amazing. Mr Abbaldo, who sadly died too young, was the casting director for the Houston Grand Opera production of BABES IN TOYLAND.
-
While I enjoy magicians okay; I wouldn't call myself a devotee, because I always know...it's, well, it's a trick...even if I don't know how it works. And I do know how a few of them work...Back in the seventies for a short while, I worked for an entertainment complex in Dallas and one of my jobs was giving some young magicians some stage presence, panache, and a little patter. So I was behind the scenes and got to see how the tricks were done. I've also once spent a lovely night at The Magic Castle in Hollywood and that was quite fun. I almost considered taking a membership as a place to entertain guests and take friends to dinner; but realized I really wouldn't use it that much.
The magicians I admire the most are those who do close-up magic, where you're right on top of them and they have to be really facile to fool you.

Wonderful. And JOY! They've used John Stossel as an example of someone who, it turns out, has NO EDUCATED OPINION, but as a JOURNALIST, points out that some scientists scoff at apocalyptic (NOT global warming, necessarily) predictions.

A two sides requirement is certainly justifiable....but to argue this, they pit Al Gore's, supported by science/scientists/climatologists...against John Stossel's?
If John Stossel is their ace in the hole, there's more to worry about there than a balanced view of something that is definitely happening whether conservatives want to admit it or not.
I think they made themselves laughably ludicrous by citing John Stossel.
That's sort of like using Michael Medved as a barometer for what constitutes great filmmaking.

That is disappointing that MEDIUM was a repeat. I didn't get a chance to watch it last night. So reading about it here is the first i've heard that it is a repeat.
I only got home at 9pm and it was already over (it airs here at 8pm also). So i was wondering if we got the new show. But alas NBC must have planned this because we got a repeat too! :(

The Witch’s House looks familiar now.
One year while walking around Westwood I met a man who lived in a charming fairytale sort of house. I was delighted to be invited in and given a tour of the house. He was very nice, wish I could remember his name. I think he wrote scripts for TV shows, whatever it was, I remember I was familiar with some of his work.
This was during the time when I was in LA coping with my father’s last weeks in the hospital & my, very difficult, sister. My walks were my salvation & meeting this gentleman truly brightened my day.

I would hate to think what kind of film you would use to balance AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH. And, since the School Board members have never seen Mr. Gore's film, how can they decide what film would balance it?

To be fair, I've heard some very strange things being said about Arnold as governor of California lately. Possibly a special Fox news report -- "Why Global Warming Won't get Gore on the 2008 Ticket" -- by Bill O'Reilly?
Or some Pat Robertson analysis of the world situation that discredits global warming and instead attributes it to the wrath of God?

One of my favorite storybook houses is in LA, on Larchmont. I usually stay in this neighborhood whenever I work in LA because I like walking around the neighborhood---the houses and gardens are so beautiful! This house is just south of Larchmont Village. It has a little wishing well in the front and a sign that say: "I'm Wishing", with a picture of Snow White. I asked Van Dyke Parks about it, since he lives in the neighborhood, and he said that the house had belonged to Adriana Caselotti, the original voice of Disney's Snow White. She has since passed on, but here's a picture of the house, which I now refer to as The White House, (not to be confused with the "other" White House, where Dopey lives...)

elmore - your CD is on its way to you via USPS overnight shipping. It will be there in the morning, sometime before noon, I think that's the guarantee. I'll see if there's someplace to tick that you don't have to sign for it, that they can just leave it, but it will be there so look for it.

Sorry I had to pull these pix from such a moribund site. It is interesting, though.

Well, here's Snow White herself:
She was 18 in 1937 when she got the part and was paid $970 for her work.

Edisauris I have never stayed in that part of town, oddly I have rarely been there. It is very pretty. Do you stay in a hotel or someone's home?

I used to stay in an apartment above the hardware store in Larchmont Village, also at the director's house on Windsor. But usually I stay at a cheap hotel I love: The Wilshire Dunes.
http://travel.yahoo.com/p-hotel-397163-dunes_wilshire_hotel-i
It's one of those '50's motels, small with no amenities except a lovely little pool in a courtyard. It's cheap and shoddy and I feel right at home. It's usually about $75-85 a night and the people who work there are very nice. I usually take a red-eye flight and get there early in the AM. They always try to get a room ready as soon as they can so I can collapse. The fancier hotels are not always so accomodating!

Spoo!
Not necessarily...there IS the mariachi grandfather.
-
"Mike and the Mariachi Grandfather" -- that's the title of my next dime novel.
-
I think he olied them.
Perhaps that was Oil of Olie?
-
We have lots of stores in Atlanta where one can find shiny shorts.
What fabric is that? Satin?
-
I am definitely looking forward to some "NEW" programming on TV tonight. Love "Ugly Betty", love "Grey's Anatomy", love "Smallville" and like "Supernatural."
-
That's my story, and I'm stickin' to it.
-
Back in the Seventies, I went to see Hallelujah Hollywood (or whatever it was called) at the original MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Part of that show was this fantastic pair of magicians named Siegfried and Roy. They weren't headliners yet, but their act was the most incredible magic act I had ever seen.
My parents saw them in Vegas as headliners about a year before "the accident" and they were absolutely thrilled by their show. They loved it!
-
Perhaps that was Oil of Olie?
I wonder what the job title would be for the guy (or gal) who oiled his shorts?
-
Tonight, CBS is in reruns, but ABC's complete slate (including UGLY BETTY and GREY'S ANATOMY), NBC's complete slate (including its comedy line-up and ER), and CW's slate (SMALLVILLE, SUPERNATURAL) are new episodes. So, there will be plenty to see and even more to record!
I only watch the ABC slate, but I'll have to record them tonight. I'm working concessions for the Seattle Symphony (http://www.washingtoncenter.org/season/season_detail.asp?event_id=708) at the Washington Center for the Performing Arts. I bet that there'll be a LOT of wine drinkers there, tonight! ::)

Man! With all the Brandenburg pieces, they'll be tipping plenty of wine.
When the Vivaldi kicks in, I imagine there'll be a snoozer or two.

Perhaps that was Oil of Olie?
For a lot of bodybuilders, Oil of O-lay-me.

DR MBarnum, is there a title you'd like?
-
Edisauris-Thanks. Next time I'm in that part of the city I will pay more attention to the area.
We tend to stay in different areas, mostly staying on the West side of town where our family is located. Recently we have been staying in Santa Monica and enjoying walks along the beach in the mornings. Now we need to find a hotel in the area that permits big dogs. We do have friends who have offered for us to stay with him, they just live a good distance from West L.A. and a nice morning walk to get Keith his Pete’s coffee.

Back from shipping and errands - cold and gray out, so no jog today.

Back from a meeting among 3 feuding executives, a consultant, and myself ::)

Good Afternoon!
To quote Henry Higgins... "Damn! Damn! Damn! Damn!"
When I logged off earlier, I was all set to finally make the trek out to IKEA. So, I took a look at the paper where I had worked out the shelf layout earlier, double-checking what I already had and what I would need to buy... Then... -I wonder if I have any more shelves in storage? Hmm... So... I started to do a mental inventory of how I used to have the shelves set up... And, alas, after a bit of pencil and paper and mental figuring/anguish, I realized that I have to have some more shelving units in my storage space. At least I hope I'm remembering correctly. So...
The plan for now - which I also realized is the plan I should have gone with all along - is to clean up and organize what I already have up here. First. -I was originally thinking that I would like to get all the shelving set up here first before moving everything up so that everything would already have a place to be put. That's still a viable alternative, but all that is causing me to do is to stall any work I need to get done up here. So... I'm heading down to DC this weekend to go through a bunch of boxes. Lots of it will be trashed, a good chunk of it will go to a consignment shop, and I'll go ahead and take some stuff back with me. And since I plan on going by my storage unit, I can pick up the rest of the shelves I have in there. Well, there better be some shelves in there! ;) -And that should prepare me properly for the big, rent-the-truck move the following week.

I want to hear about some tricks, baby.

I used to love magic as a youngster (see Kritzerland for those stories). I think it's in Kritzerland.
-
I have shaved and will shower and then be on my way to rehearsal - a full five hours today.
-
I sent Tony Walton a copy of How To Write A Dirty Book and Other Stories - he sent me a thank you note and said that while the cover was lovely, the book itself was a different book. I tell ya. That's only happened once before but it's really annoying.
-
bk - I meant to ask this yesterday...
Is the "Kids show" you're working on related to the "Kidz Bop" concerts"?
-
I don't know from Kidz Bop, but I'm sure there are a few of these things out there, trying to be like the whiggles and the doodlebops - the sad part is this guy has had this idea for years but never could figure out how to take it to the next step - which is why he was finally put in touch with me. Our show is called The Party Animals Live.
-
In any case...
Since I haven't had any lunch yet, I'm gonna head out for a bit to get a bite to eat. And to clear my head. And then once I get back... Let the games begin!
-

Hmm... Well, just going by what you been "revealing" on the site, I'd look into Kidz Bop - and maybe even the "Little Mozart" program here in NYC.
*Kidz Bop is a basically a cover-band disguised as a concert/School-of-Rock event. Now, if what you're working on is using original tunes...
-
OK. I'm stalling again. And my stomach is growling...

I wonder what the job title would be for the guy (or gal) who oiled his shorts?
I don't know. But I used to work with a gal whose job, when she lived in California back many, many years ago, was to shave the guys before the bodybuilding shows.

Greg has worked on several puppet shows for PBS. (Puppeteers seem to generally have a pretty dark sense of humor!) We have become a "tight-knit" group of friends over the years. The prop person, who maintains the puppets and keeps them looking good, is known as the "puppet fluffer". LOL!

I wish someone would light the obnoxious actress in those HIP ads who yells

Got back from lunch, and it felt like the temperature had dropped 10 degrees. Probably hadn't and I was standing in the shade, but it was COLD today.
-
It's still very brisk outside in glorious sunlight.
Tonight...colder still. Have already brought some plants in from the balcony.
-
I keep forgetting, in talking to other people, that we have a three-day weekend. I keep trying to make plans/appointments for Monday.
-
For those in states where it is NOT observed, Monday is Martin Luther King Jrs. birthday....a federal holiday.
-
I got several telephone calls this afternoon, one of which lasted almost thirty minutes, so I didn't have a chance to get through even a single movie.
The movie was THE LAST SAMURAI. I never saw this in the theater, and I didn't watch it on HBO when it aired, so the Blu-ray disc was my first experience with it.
I think it's too long (though I understand the reasoning behind the length), but it's thoroughly engrossing. I really liked Ed Zwick's GLORY (even with Matthew Broderick the weakest of the actors), and this has the same kind of stateliness in tone. Cruise stays in character and has been very strong. Ken Watanabe earned his Oscar nomination for this, a very intense, commanding performance.
As for the Blu-ray transfer, well, it's another slam drunk for Warners (THE SEARCHERS was also from them.) That three dimensional look that the best HD transfers has is here in spades, and it's just so easy for the image to mesmerize you with its color, sharpness, and detail. Rock solid.
-
For those in states where it is NOT observed, Monday is Martin Luther King Jrs. birthday....a federal holiday.
Yes, I knew that, but of course it means another mail interruption and more magazines that get "lost" in the deluge.

DerBrucer-thanks for the fun photos.
Jeanne-I don’t remember that house in Culver City. I checked with Keith & he doesn’t either. Now I’m very curious, sure would have like to see it.
JANE, I was wondering if you'd remember it. I don't think it's the Witch's House that Ron was referring to, although the architecture is similar, but I could be wrong. I do know that the house I'm thinking of was still there in 1994, because I made a point of looking for it. Between Washington and Venice Blvd, between Overland and Robertson. the street runs north and south and the house is on the west side. Now it's bugging me! I can see it in my mind's eye, but don't recall the name of the street.
-
It all sounds wonderful, DR MattH. If you were reporting on some film I wanted to watch, I might actually be jealous.
-
So tonight, I want to finish SAMURAI and hopefully see if CSI: NY recorded (and if so, watch it) before UGLY BETTY comes on.
Should be easy enough to do. I cleaned the bedroom areas this morning since I got up much earlier than usual.
-
Our show is called The Party Animals Live.
I think I used to date them!

Well, I think you've already seen the next Blu-ray in the queue: SUPERMAN II: THE RICHARD DONNER CUT. But, I'll keep trying!

I just read in VARIETY that Meryl Streep has signed to play the lead in the film version of MAMMA MIA which is now in the planning stages.

I don't know. But I used to work with a gal whose job, when she lived in California back many, many years ago, was to shave the guys before the bodybuilding shows.

EDISAURUS,
Did you ever meet Marcia Berman or Mallory Pearce, old puppeteer friends of mine from LA long ago? Lovely people.
-
DR Ginny - Thanks for posting the link for the TLA symposium.
You're welcome, DR Jose. I'm actually thinking about treating myself to a long weekend in NYC and attending the symposium.

And one for Marcia

Off to read more in the Cukor biography and then back to Mr. Cruise in Japan.

Almost time for me to go home.
Bye for now.

EDISAURUS,
Did you ever meet Marcia Berman or Mallory Pearce, old puppeteer friends of mine from LA long ago? Lovely people.
No...I only know the Atlanta puppeteers. We try to get together once a month for "Puppet Beer Night" at a local bar.
They probably know your friends...some of them have worked on Sesame Street movies, etc.
-
Jeanne, I did not know you were a puppeteer at one time....I am intrigued.

Back from a very good rehearsal, and dealing with other hassles I don't really need to deal with - that's what occasionally comes from trying to do someone a favor.
-
Jose, all the music in our show is original.

I'm quite hungry but am saving myself for dinner. And I hope dinner appreciates what I'm doing.

I think I'll relax and maybe start watching Superman, The Movie, this time with its original theatrical sound mix.

But first, let me make thirty more posts.

It wasn't a HUGE turnout by any measure, sadly. Angelides was a crappy candidate for any party.
55.9% does not reflect the apathy most Californians had toward the election.

I'm working on a dreadful sitcom that is shot here in Atlanta called "Tyler Perry's House of Pain". Technically it's OK but the writing and some of the acting is pretty lame. I think they should rename it "House of Lame".
-
One of the main characters is a crack addict, though, so that's pretty interesting.
-
Hi all. Had a nice trip to prison today.
Where else in the world but HHW can one read a statement like this??

Miss Rush is here.

I'll have to finish the thirty posts later.

Yay---that's the end of the last episode. Now I can go find DH and head to dinner.

Hello, fellow Dear Readers. I spent the entire day -- dawn to dusk -- birdwatching with a friend. We logged 59 species. Sixty, if you count the chicken on the farm.

I'm off to the symphony! Until later!

Good Evening!
-Just taking a break from my "project"... So far, two recycling bags filled with old junk mail, receipts (shredded), catalogs, magazines, and small boxes. Whew! Now I just need to figure out at what stage I want/need to finish tonight. It has been a bit overwhelming, but at least I'm getting it done. Finally!

What sort of steak shall I have? And what about the fixins?

Perhaps a baked potato with scads of butter.

Perhaps a nice Caesar Salad to start.

Perhaps some nice vegetables instead of a heavy baked potato?

You think I'm kidding about thirty posts?

I will reach 23,000 postings before this evening is through.

Well, I guess I shall now be on my way. When I return I will be stuffed with foodstuffs.

DRLaura-WOW! One doesn’t see a chicken every day.

No...I only know the Atlanta puppeteers. We try to get together once a month for "Puppet Beer Night" at a local bar.
Somehow, the idea of a Puppet Beer Night strikes me as quite funny.
-
Jeanne, I did not know you were a puppeteer at one time....I am intrigued.
Except for a very brief stint in college I was not actually a puppeteer. I enjoyed the brief stint immensely--the making of the puppets and then of course the performance. I met Marcia and Mallory later. We were all part of a food co-op, where I met the most interesting people. Mallory made animal puppets, which were very life-like. Marcia did some puppet shows and also wrote children's songs. My landlord at the time, Mel Helstein, taught puppetry at UCLA. And that is the end of my puppet connection!
-
My friend took me to Ruth's Chris Steakhouse a couple of weeks ago. I had salmon.
Was it any good?

The salmon was very good. I was studying for my cholesterol test at the time.

Ah...the cholesterol test.
Yes.

It's almost time for "Ugly Betty" to start.
My baked tater is about done...and my steak is primed and ready to be grilled.

I began my evening of viewing finishing THE LAST SAMURAI. It didn't end as I expected, and I ended up liking it very much. Like all movies that feature battles (even masterful movies like THE RETURN OF THE KING and not so masterful as STAR WARS III), I feel directors just have them run too long, at least for my comfort (I'm sure those who enjoy such things would prefer even longer contests). The battles throughout the film are extended to the breaking point (how many arrows do I need to see piercing throats?). The climactic battle sequence is about five chapters long on the disc.
Still, I never stopped admiring the HD quality video, and the DD+ audio (Blu-ray doesn't call it Dolby Digital Plus, but that's what it is) was extremely immersive.
-
Next, I watched the Disney two reeler BEAR COUNTRY, another wonderful True-Life Adventure. Love all of these classics (this won the 1952 documentary Oscar for two reel films). Again, Disney did major clean-up on this. I didn't notice a single scratch or speckle though the photography was occasionally softer than in some other features. With a film more than 50 years old shot in 16 mm, I guess they did all they could with sharpening it up.
-
I still had about 50 minutes before the start of UGLY BETTY so I began HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER'S STONE. Always forget how much information this first film gives us that seems much clearer once one has seen additional films in the series (and read the books). The transfer of the first film is a mixture of good and bad imagery. Much of it looks almost HD in sharpness and color richness. Other shots are grainy and seem desaturated for no good reason.
-
UGLY BETTY - a wonderful and surprising episode in the continuing drama. I was so sorry for some of the things that happened.
(spoiler)
Will there be a job for Betty back at MODE? No time for this issue to be addressed this week.
-
GREY'S ANATOMY had the first of a two parter with various turning points in the lives of the show's major characters. Edge of your seat fascinating for me.
-
I finished the evening watching tonight's SUPERNATURAL an hour after it was originally shown on the network. Exciting show, and the show is going in a sort of different direction this season. It certainly holds my attention, but I hadn't started to tire of the "monster of the week" scenario yet. Maybe they'll go back to that next season.
-
BTW, I had feared that the DVR would record CSI: NY after it had started and thus not allow me to see the whole show. As it turned out, the timing was wrong, and the show started before the DVR began recording. Thus, I deleted it without watching.

Good Evening!
Well... Progress has been made. I shredded close to two full drawer-fuls of various papers. And since I figured there was no time like the present - and since my roommate, Jim, had come home just at the right time, I went ahead and moved the desk - the big, heavy(!) desk - out of my room and out onto the sidewalk. It's one of those old-fashioned, sturdy, government office deals. Just a little too big for what I need, and since I need the floor space for more shelving - and a smaller desk... -And that then enabled me to place a bunch of my boxes in the nook where the desk once way. *Now I'm just waiting to hear people outside trying to move it. It really is quite heavy. We ended up "tumbling" it out of my room. -Thankfully, it just fit through the doorway. Whew! -And, thankfully, again, I have an "outside" door in/on/off my bedroom. *Originally, I was thinking I'd take it through the hallway, but it was not going to fit between the staircase and the radiator.
In any case... Done!
:)

I will wax on about the steak in the notes - it was superb! It's great eating at one of the most expensive restaurants in LA with someone who works there. Our total bill came to $120 - after her discount the total bill came to $29. That's what I'M talkin' about!
-
I'm not going to be able to watch a full DVD tonight - so I'm just wandering around.
-
Miss Rush was very organized and did a very good job, thus far.
-
Perhaps I'll go watch a bit of the first of three Dr. Mabuse movies (on one DVD) from the 60s - they're awful transfers - full-frame, only English dub available, but I still find the films amusing, and they're all directed by the guy who did most of the German Edgar Wallace movies. Were this DVD as good as those, it would be sweet.

Six more postings.

Our side dishes were dinner salads (with spectacularly good thousand island dressing), asparagus with hollandaise, and great onion rings. I didn't have any potatoes. But, I did have dessert. Thankfully, I'm not overly full.
