Topic of the Day...Favorite Cy Coleman songs:

Baby Dream Your Dream
Big Spender
Come Follow the Band
Hey, Look Me Over
Hey There, Good Times
If My Friends Could See Me Now
I've Got Your Number
Lovers on Christmas Eve
Marry Me Now/I Got You
Never Met a Man I Didn't Like (the long version)
Nobody Does It Like Me
The Oldest Profession
The Other Side of the Tracks
Our Favorite Son
Real Live Girl
The Rhythm of Life
Thank God I'm Old
There's Gotta Be Something Better Than This
Welcome to Holiday Inn

Everything from On the Twentieth Century
Everything from City of Angels

Those are just selections from the musicals that he's written.  Other than "The Best Is Yet To Come" and "Witchcraft," I don't know many of his non-theatrical songs.  And I don't want to search right now for them, either.  According to the songwritershalloffame.org songlist for him, there are 430 entries!  But then they also have "BARNUM SELECTIONS" as one entry, so there could be more than 430 actual songs.

Afraid of waking the entire family with your nocturnal trips to the toilet? Two new features of the Alauno can help. Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) placed strategically at the foot of the toilet and inside the bowl make this unit easy to find in the dark. And the flush is a mere 55 decibels, which is equivalent to the white noise in a library.

I fell asleep before the ruckus was over last night, but DH arrived home safe and sound. There were 2 cars zooming around the neighborhood---one was a pickup truck---both had no lights on. I may ask our Zone officer what was up at our next MStar meeting (the neighborhood partnership with the police.)

I have some more Blu-ray discs shipped from Amazon on Thursday, but I don't have any hopes of their arriving today, and since we have another postal holiday on Monday and Tuesday will be a catch-up day, I'm guessing I won't get them until next Wednesday.

I have one Blu-ray left - SLEEPY HOLLOW - so I'll probably put it on hold for a day or two. I haven't seen this film since it came out at the movies and I saw it with my friend Rodney who was going back a second time to see it. I did like it though it actually had little to do with Irving's masterful short story.

Good morning, all!  DR Edi, your song choices are not Cy Coleman songs, much as I love the singing of Mr Guy Haines.  They're Adler-Ross numbers, and I am certain you know many Coleman songs; he was a lovely gentleman.

I'm simply qvelling over the CD for "The Brain" which will be certain to drive the neighbors mad for the next couple of weeks.  This recording is going to be such fun to listen to.  I want the finished product!

When can we order?

TOD:
   Whole Scores:
WILDCAT: especially "Tall Hope" and "Hey Look Me Over"
BARNUM:  The original production, Glenn Close and Jim Dale were amazing: "The Colors Of My Life" and "Out There"
I LOVE MY WIFE: All of it, especially "Someone wonderful I Missed" and "Hey There Good Times"
   "A Real Live Girl"
   "You're Nothing Without Me"

I forgot SWEET CHARITY!  Duh!

DR MattH, I loved SLEEPY HOLLOW!  My initial reaction was, Lord, that's gonna stink - I'm having a hard time forgiving Tim Burton for the dreadful Mars invasion - and I fell in love with the film.  He's the only film director of the current market who might stand a chance with SWEENEY TODD, I believe.  I think he'd do a beautiful remake of BRIGADOON as well.

Who's playing Judge Turpitude?  Anyone know?

Well...  I guess I needed the sleep.  -I just got up about and 30 minutes ago.  -Well, I knew I needed the sleep, so... So much for an early start down to DC.  -And, of course, now I'm thinking to myself, "Do I really need to head down today? Especially if I'm heading back Monday night?"  Hmm... And since I don't like driving in the rain...  In any case...

DR Elmore, I'm sure I've read who's been cast as Judge Turpin, but it's just not coming into my brain as I type.

Your enthusiasm for SLEEPY HOLLOW now increases my desire to see it. I remember it only as being visually stunning with less gore than I was expecting. I may put it on tonight after I finish FIREWALL (or if FIREWALL is so horrible that I abandon it mid-film which could very well happen given its lousy reviews.) I do want to see it in a pitch black room which requires that it be night at my house.

As for Cy Coleman songs...

Favorite Cy Coleman score: On the Twentieth Century

Cy Coleman score that I actually had to practice ;) : City of Angels - And this was/is mainly due to how the piano/conductor score is laid out.  It's truly a P/C as opposed to a P/V (piano/vocal).  Lots of orchestra cues to decipher - and basically ignore.  And it's just so darn jazzy - but in a good way.  ;)

Favorite "little known" Cy Coleman song: "You There In The Back Row" - Thank you, bk and Liz Callaway, for introducing me to that song.  -And, alas, I think it's out of print again.

Cy Coleman song that gets butchered the most at the auditions I've played: "You Can Always Count On Me"

Cy Coleman song that most auditionees can never properly give me their tempo of: "There's Gotta Be Something Better Than This"  - Gotta love that hemiola!

Cy Coleman song that makes your heart melt when sung by an eight-year old boy: "Look Around"  -I used to play for a musical theatre class geared towards elementary school-aged children.. Awwww.

Cy Coleman song that I have fun playing: "You're Nothing Without Me".

First Cy Coleman song I remember playing at an audition: "Colors Of My Life"

Cy Coleman song that I look forward to playing at an audition: "Never"  -Who knew that 6/4 time could groove so much?  -Alas, if the actress doesn't get it, nor nail it.. :-\

Cy Coleman score that I should probably get to know better: The Will Rogers Follies

Cy Coleman score that I would like to hear in concert, uncut and unaltered: I Love My Wife  -Just because... I've always been curious as to how this show would play today.

And, finally - for now - the Cy Coleman song that usually gets butchered at auditions, but that usually ends up providing me with a big grin across my face when it does: "Hey, Big Spender"  ;D - Schaudenfreude, baby!  "Thank You!"

For some reason, I always get Damn Yankees and Sweet Charity confused. We had both of these albums when I was a little kid, and I remember being surprised that my parents had an album with the word "Damn" in the name when that word was not to be spoken in our house. And Gwen Verdon, on the cover of Sweet Charity seemed quite "lurid" to little me!

This morning I was playing for the first time with my brand spankin'-new Palm TX handheld device thingy.  It has built-in wi-fi, and I was able to log in and read this morning's notes and posts while seated at a near-by coffee cafe.  That was great fun except I could not post.  I'll have to figure that one out.

Later today, I will be heading up to my sister's house in Doylestown, PA--home of the James Michner Museum and the Cold-Eaze factory.  It will be another post-Christmas family gathering with turkey and some leftover gift exchanges.  And then there's the Eagles/Saints game tonight.

My dinner last night was AWESOME.

The rack of lamb was superb.  The soup that preceded it was magnificent.

The two glasses of wine were perfection.

The creme brulee and coffee were heaven.

It should surprise no one that all I could do the rest of the evening was to sit in my rocker like so many bags of potatoes and stare at the TV until such time as I felt it apropriate to go to bed.

I am sitting in a meeting. People are talking a lot. I am sitting across the room from a large picture window overlooking a beautiful valley. There are birds flying in and out of the trees. There is snow on the mountain.

That is all.

I sense a haiku in the making.

Procrastinate
Make this your motto day and night
Procrastinate
And you will never see the light
The apple on the top of the tree is always too high to achieve
Just take no example from Eve:
Procrastinate

With apologies to Mr Cole Porter

And no apologies to me?  ;)

Well... After some e-mails, it looks like I'll going to Jason Graae's new show, "Graae's Anatomy" at Birdland on Monday night... And then the tour of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf at the Kennedy Center on Thursday night...  So...  Present plan of action: Stay here this weekend.  Go down to DC next Wednesday night... Come back up with the truck the following Tuesday.

Well, I've played "The Brain" CD about 5 times now today, and so far there have been no major rumblings from the neighbors.  It really captures the show, and the cast sounds wonderful.  I'd never guess that Egbert was recorded later because of his laryngitis. and the band sounds fantastic!

DR MBarnum, you will love it!

...And I've been reading the reports about the ice storm in the mid-West...  VIBES!~~~~~VIBES!~~~~~VIBES!

DR Cillaliz - Have you been affected?  How's John doing down in Joplin?
I haven't gotten too much in the way of snow, just a tiny bit over night...I did try to get the snow blower to work this morning because we are expecting to get 4-8 inches of snow tomorrow or monday. No dice. I decided it was a very cheap model (relative to other snowblowers) and it's 5 years old, so I went and bought the newer version of the same machine.

I will donate the old one to any group that wants it. Then all they need is a handy man who can fix it and they have a snowblower.

From what I understand Joplin is getting the ice and is expected to get it for 3 days.  Jon took a duffle bag with clothes etc to the station when he went to work last night. No word on whether he made it home or spent the night there.

I haven't talked to him for awhile, but I heard he's enrolled in college again in Joplin.  He's doing well, from what I hear. Think I'll email him.

I loved the years when DS Rob was growing up and I was a free-lancer.  Mostly, I taught at colleges, but from time to time would get a short-term library assignment or a consulting job.  Of course, I couldn't have supported myself that way, but I sure did like the freedom and flexibility.

Thank Ginny.  I think I'm pretty lucky that I'm  in a positon to plan this financially and make sure I'm ok for awhile.  I know the work is out there and I know I can handle being solo. I've done it before. I have learned so much from this job and have gotten established in a new community.  But I've also stayed twice as long as my predecessor - who previously had the record for staying the longest.

I'm also planning to get the new things I need for the house. (like the snowblower) now while I can afford them. Hopefully they won't need to be replaced very soon.

I learned valuable things from my Ma:

  1. Psychological pain is soooo much more fun than physical pain!

  2.  It's as easy to fall in love with a rich man as a poor one (why didn't she follow her advice?)

  3.  Kids in comas cause no problems

  4.  You'll always look good in something expensive

  5.  Never take candy from strangers; get real estate

I did use some credit I had and got a region 2 DVD of the entire run of Honey West - I confess I've never seen an episode but I love Anne Francis and it really looks like it might be fun.  It only lasted one season - thirty episodes.  These days what comprises a season?  Twelve?

Depends on where the show is appearing. When HONEY WEST aired, there were three networks only and a original show/rerun schedule was pretty much in place for all shows.

Now with networks, cable channels, paycable, etc. every series has a different definition of a season.

For a network show in a normal season run (like HONEY WEST would be today), it's 22-24 episodes.

I also had time to finish LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME that I began last night. Doris' "Shakin' the Blues Away" is one of her greatest ever performances, but I honestly think the simple piano-vocal of "I'll Never Stop Loving You" is my favorite moment in the movie.

I also put in the 1954 A STAR IS BORN (since I've been listening to the soundtrack for the last several days) and watched the entire "Born in a Trunk" sequence and "Lose That Long Face" before the dressing room breakdown scene. The color is spectacular on "Born in a Trunk" and "Lose That Long Face" is just so infectious.

Quote
Official Attacks Top Law Firms Over Detainees By NEIL A. LEWIS

WASHINGTON, Jan. 12 — The senior Pentagon official in charge of military detainees suspected of terrorism said in an interview this week that he was dismayed that lawyers at many of the nation’s top firms were representing prisoners at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, and that the firms’ corporate clients should consider ending their business ties.

The comments by Charles D. Stimson, the deputy assistant secretary of defense for detainee affairs, produced an instant torrent of anger from lawyers, legal ethics specialists and bar association officials, who said Friday that his comments were repellent and displayed an ignorance of the duties of lawyers to represent people in legal trouble.

“This is prejudicial to the administration of justice,” said Stephen Gillers, a law professor at New York University and an authority on legal ethics. “It’s possible that lawyers willing to undertake what has been long viewed as an admirable chore will decline to do so for fear of antagonizing important clients.

“We have a senior government official suggesting that representing these people somehow compromises American interests, and he even names the firms, giving a target to corporate America.”

Mr. Stimson made his remarks in an interview on Thursday with Federal News Radio, a local Washington-based station that is aimed at an audience of government employees.

The same point appeared Friday on the editorial page of The Wall Street Journal, where Robert L. Pollock, a member of the newspaper’s editorial board, cited the list of law firms and quoted an unnamed “senior U.S. official” as saying, “Corporate C.E.O.’s seeing this should ask firms to choose between lucrative retainers and representing terrorists.”

Been mildly obsessed with the two youtube.com clips showing Yvonne de Carlo singing "I'm Still Here," one on the David Frost Show and one at the Hollywood Bowl.  Neither is 100% perfect, with her going up on the lyric on the Frost Show at one point and repeating a section but still very exciting, and the Hollywood Bowl clip being interrupted for a quick second or two where I guess someone momentarily changed the channel while recording, maybe.   (You can find it on youtube.com by searching for yvonne de carlo, of course.)

I know it's been said a lot over the past couple of days, but it's somehow amazing that in the early 1970's, a person of 49 would be moved to proclaim "I'm Still Here."  With everything bad about changes in society, isn't that something to marvel at, how far we've come in that regard?

Or maybe I'm just high on cough medicine.  :)

Next came that Harrison Ford thriller FIREWALL. I guess tired is the best word I could use to describe it. Once again, I thought the set-up was pretty well planned, but these films often seem to have great ideas without an adequate resolution. Ford walks through a lot of the film almost like he's in a daze, and when things get intense later in the film, I thought he might have a heart attack from the exertion since he'd been so lethargic through the earlier parts of the picture.

But the film had a great cast, many of them like Alan Arkin and Robert Patrick utterly wasted. Robert Forster has a couple of scenes, but he, too, has little to do. Paul Bettany is the principal bad guy, and Virginia Masden tries to make something out of her role as Ford's wife, but it's very poorly written. Mary Lynn Rajskub from '24' actually ends up having an important part in the film and was my favorite character.

With a different male star and a good rewrite to make the ending more interesting, this could have been an intelligent thriller.

When it was over, I put in Mae West's SHE DONE HIM WRONG. I noticed it was on TCM the other night, but I already had a copy, so I made myself a note to watch it again. Really amazes me that Universal hasn't released the few West pictures it still hasn't released just to have her major 30s films in release. That last set must really have sold badly.

Are they friend or are they foe
That's the answer we don't know

I can and will do it singlehandedly.

Is that a half of your two-hand piece?

(With your other hand stuck in a box of Godiva's)

Is Christmas Truce on DVD?

If Tom means the one shown on the History Channel (http://store.aetv.com/html/product/index.jhtml?id=70867) - YES

Quote
Narrated by Ioan Gruffudd (A&E's Horatio Hornblower) THE CHRISTMAS TRUCE tells the story of the spontaneous suspension of hostilities along the Western Front, when once and future enemies traded pieces of uniforms, shared Christmas rations, buried their dead together, and played games. Eyewitness accounts, the recorded recollections of those who were there, newspaper stories and military records help document this extraordinary occurrence, an event that in many ways symbolized the final flickerings of the world that ended as the Twentieth Century took hold.

Like most of A&E stuff, it's the devil's own to track down - IMDB doesn't list the stuff, nor does Amazon!!
