So last night I received a present from my mother that I picked out, one of which I can already tell is going to change my life. It is called “Le Chic Chick Knows…”, and consists of three decks of flashcard type index’s that inform an un-chic chick like me how to be Intelligent, Elegant, and Strong. One Hundred and fifty cards later I shall have evolved into more intelligent, more elegant, and stronger version of myself.

Tonight’s Tip: (I will translate it from Chic terms to ordinary English) If you admire a particular brand name, artist, or founder of any sort, take the time to research who they are. This way you are not caught at a party knowing Jane Fonda’s name but not one whit about her.

In following tonight’s tip I looked up who the creator of my favorite song ever was. "Baby, It's Cold Outside" is a pop standard with words and music by Frank Loesser. The female voice in the song is called "The Mouse" and the male "The Wolf." In 1948--after years of informally performing the song at various parties--Loesser sold its rights to MGM, which inserted the song into its 1949 motion picture, Neptune's Daughter. The film featured two performances of the song: one by Ricardo Montalbán and Esther Williams and the other by Red Skelton and Betty Garrett. These performances earned Loesser an Academy Award for Best Original Song.
My! The things I never even knew I did not know!~

I, of course, recorded Baby, It's Cold Outside in a very unique version - with Charles Nelson Reilly as The Mouse, and Karen Morrow as The Wolf - most amusing - it's on A Hollywood Christmas.

Yesterday, I finally got the hole in my wall fixed (the hole that had to be cut in my wall so that the neighbor's pipe could be fixed after it burst because of freezing weather at the end of November)!  The owner of the condo next to mine (whose pipe burst) is a contractor and he fixed the wall...and quite well, too.  Now all that needs to happen is the painting.  My sister picked out the color of the paint and has some left over.

I'm not just sitting here like a dead herring in the moonlight.  Okay, I am just sitting here, but not like a dead herring.  I'm also watching a recording of Friday's episode of "The David Letterman Show" with guest Kristin Chenoweth.  She didn't sing.

Good morning, all!  I was hoping I'd wake this morning to snow, but 'snow such luck.  for all of us wishing a snowfall, here's a Nutcracker Waltz of the Snowflakes.  I couldn't find a photo of Balanchine's beautiful staging for NYC Ballet.

So, today I see my barber, and  then I shall visit Ben and Anthony to celebrate laast month's holidays.  After that, I have my first of several 3-hour sessions to record the new "virtual" orchestrations of ANNIE GET YOUR GUN.  I shall return later in the afternoon, and perhaps accomplish a bit of work on Toyland.

Good morning. I didn't have to get up early today, but the cats thought I should. As I lay in bed before sunrise I heard snowblowers so I decided to jump out of bed and go clear the driveway with my new toy snowblower.

I thought it was cold out there, but I'm glad I didn't look until I got done and was back in the house. It was actually -2 with a windchill of -25!

Re: "Baby, It's Cold Outside" - This may have been brought up before, but did anyone catch the new documentary about about Frank Loesser that was recently broadcast on PBS?  I thought it was very well done.  There was a segment about "Baby, It's Cold Outside".  It was sort of sad finding out how the song had gone from a very personal "party trick" of sorts, to a song that Frank Loesser grew un-fond of.

As for the Topic of the Day...

-I'm not fully awake yet, but here's my list as is it stands at this time and time and this point of consciousness.  ;)

"Cinema Paradiso" - The three-hour director's cut.  -Although, the shorter theatrical release ain't bad either.  But since I'm on a desert island, I might as well have a long(er) movie to occupy my time.

"Longtime Companion"

"The Color Purple"

"Singin' In The Rain"

"Like Water For Chocolate"

From what I recall, he initially fought using the song in a movie.  He had written it for him and his (first) wife to perform.  It was a basically a gift to her in a sense.  It was not a song he had intended to make money from.  Apparently, they and the song had become so popular, that there were times when they were invited to parties with the hope that "Baby" would get performed at one point in the evening.  Loesser began to tire of it.  And then as his first marriage came to an end...

I'm very tempted to head to Splash to see if they'll be showing the SNL clip in addition to the Dreamgirls Tony Awards clip tonight.  -"And I Am Telling You" usually signals the end of Musical Mondays... And then they use the dance mix video of "I Just Wanna F***ing Dance" from Jerry Springer - The Opera to transition back to the dance floor.  ;)

Re: last night's GREASE

*
*

They didn't show that much of Juliana.  But from what they did show you could tell that the judges liked her a lot.  She is one of the 50 finalists (25 women) who went through to Grease academy.  And i would expect her to be one of the 12 finalists who go on to the public voting.

They only showed her singing one line (from "hopelessly devoted to you" i think). The british judge said she had star quality.  Then during the dancing she was the one wearing the tightfit white outfit. And they made some really good comments about her.  Then at the end after the HAIRSPRAY guy Austin Miller got through they showed that juliana got through.

I really think that people who have been in broadway tours like austin and juliana will have a huge advantage. Because obviously they are good singers and dancers and actors. I expect many of the amateurs will struggle especially in the acting department. So i would be surprised (shocked) if austin didn't make it.

As for last night's show i really liked that blonde ashley (i think she was the one who they gave 3 chances to). And i was completely fed up with the girlfriend who dumped her boyfriend after she did not get through. He was not very good (and got though). She was a bit better.

I really liked what they did show of juliana. And i think the really good stuff should start next week (when they show the 50 best go through boot camp). That is always my favorite part of american idol (watching the 100+ best audition).

I think it's fairly obvious that Juliana will be in the show IF there's a show, and same with the guy from Hairspray.  The fact that anyone is watching this crap is the most amazing thing of all - but it's why these things stay on the air.  On other boards there's post after post how this particular show is the nadir of television - but they watch and they watch.

So... My question about "Grease: You're the One That I Want"...

So... Since it does look they will have some "pros" in the Final 12 - or whatever the final number ends up being - what happens if someone happens to get an offer for another show during the winnowing down process?  I mean, some of the people I saw last night, are definitely "working actors".  Will the producers of the TV show allow them to leave?  -Sort of like when an actor/actress is "allowed" to leave a production if a "better" contract is offered (at least in AEA terms).  Or do the contestants sign away their life for the period of the live TV rounds?  And just how do those people make any sort of money during the time period?

Well... Depending who makes the Finals, I may be able to get those questions answered personally.  ;)

Boston is going to be COLD the day of our screening. High of 20, low of 16. I hope it doesn't keep people from venturing out for opening night!

It might be cold if there is a breeze off the bay. Actually that is not too cold here but then again we have a dry cold so that might make a difference.

My Closer producer had a friend who was a singer/dancer in the Broadway production of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. She was told she couldn't audition for the Grease thing because she had too much professional experience.

So how can Juliana make it? It doesn't seem fair--I thought the idea was to discover new talent! (Maybe I should just watch the show...)

I'm wondering if the "catch" was "no previous Broadway credit(s)".  -Which would explain how some of the "working actors" were able to get through the auditions.

They had regular Equity auditions - someone has already said that Marshall has several pros coming in towards the end.  It's all completely bogus and furthermore filled with outright lies (the couple who broke up - scripted reality TV - there's a concept).  Touting Jim Jacobs as a Broadway veteran (one B'way show does not a veteran make - and they also act as if he had something to do with the film - he and his partner were not allowed on the set, that's how much he had to do with it - and, of course, the two hit songs from the film are by John Farrar), touting Miss Marshall as a Tony Award-winning director (she has never won a directing award, Tony or otherwise), touting David Ian as a B'way veteran (sorry, he produced Saturday Night Fever in London - and even if he'd produced it on B'way, producing THAT show only makes you an idiot, not a veteran).

Re: GREASE YOU'RE THE ONE THAT I WANT.

I thought that any professional was allowed to audition. But perhaps it is only people who have not been on broadway. That was not made clear (although they did address the issue of allowing people in with experience). I believe kathleen marshall said something about how this was not just a competition for amateurs.

As for how many contestants are left, last night they chose the 50 that would go to grease academy.  The finals will be when there are only 12 left (6 men and 6 women). That is supposedly when america can start voting.

So next sunday we will see the 50 chosen for grease academy. And we will watch them go through training. I don't think that they said how many would get cut next week. But i am assuming that we will know the 12 finalists by the end of next week's show (i think they said something last night about america voting in 2 weeks).

The little town south of us has absolutely no power at all, like 20,000 homes. I slid into work WAY early just to get warm again. My bedroom was 43 degrees this morning :) We have power, internet, and heat here, but our news program is down, so we're composing our newscasts in microsoft word....makes for a very tedious day. People are watching the GREASE show for the same reason they watch talent shows and talent competitions on the other networks: America is a country of competition. Sports wouldn't be as big as they are if we didn't LOVE a contest to crown a winner, and the same can be said of everything from Miss America to the Oscars. Competition is ingrained in us from the cradle.

One good thing--at least Jake Gyllenhaal has somewhat lessened the stigma of spontaneously breaking out into a rendition of "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going".

Unfortunately, he probably increased the stigma that all gay men are drag queens.

I, however, saved the GREASE show to watch tonight before prime time TV begins for me.

I did watch the dramatic shows I recorded from last night.

However, I began with the hilarious EXTRAS, Ricky Gervais' very funny and droll British series currently beginning its second series of shows on HBO. Orlando Bloom was a hoot last night bragging about his looks. Hysterical from beginning to end.

WITHOUT A TRACE had a lesser episode about the disappearance of a champion eater right after he'd earned $5,000 for winning a chili contest. The guilty party was pretty obvious once we got each suspect's backstory. Often, WITHOUT A TRACE is one of the most difficult of the procedurals to guess the identity of the guilty party, but not this week.

touting Miss Marshall as a Tony Award-winning director (she has never won a directing award, Tony or otherwise..

Well she IS a director - her last two Broadway outings had her Tony nominated as a Director; she is a two-time Tony winner, albeit for choreography. Therefore, to refer to her as a "Tony Award winning director" is technically correct (perhaps a tad disingenous).

One Murphy leaves, and another Murphy joins the fray.  Glad to see my reclusive mother has returned in fine form.

I very much like "DR Elmo" as a new nickname for you, Lar, but I'm afraid if I start using that, some of my old nicknames might start leaking out (courtesy of my mom...).

Don't ever worry about that, Mr. Poopy Pants.

Unfortunately, he probably increased the stigma that all gay men are drag queens.

I can't remember who it was, but I recall a gay radio host often saying that all gay men should dress in drag at least one night a year.  I never agreed with him--I just feel that dressing up as woman is way too much work.  I can barely keep up appearances as is.

Yes, Russian dressing is high in fat and carbs but it's very good.  It's the Mayo factor.

I could be worse - Ranch has 25% more calories than Russian!

I believe that both Austin and Juliana were signed to their respective tours as understudys.  Neither had previously appeared on a Broadway stage.  Maybe that it the difference.

Kind of an exciting day at work..since there's not much to do graphically and we're short-handed they sent me on a shoot. A church steeple decided it didn't want to sit on top fo the church anymore. I hadn't shot a story in years, it was fun. There were 7 people in the office of the church, the heard cracking for a couple of hours, then bolted when they heard the crash. Nobody was hurt luckily. It was really weird to see though.

Hello, all!  I have had a splendidly splendid day so far.  My barber did an amazing job, given what he had to work with, and I spent two loverly hours chez DR Ben and Baxter the Clown.  It was a festive holiday visit, and their glorious tree should be the envy of all.  Many reputations were made, several destroyed, and the gossip flew.

So, then to West 27th Street to deal with ANNIE GET YOUR GUN; it's hard to explain this "virtual orchestra" but it's a program to be used in performance to augment a live ensemble.  This was the first time I've ever heard the orchestration, which I did in 1999-2000, for the stock package.  So far, it sounds soooo much better than I feared.  I was so afraid I'd be humiliated in front of a group of gentlemen I just met.  Of course, we're only halfway through "Doing what Comes Natcherly," but I'm smiling today!

DR TCB, I just learned one of our DR Cason's nicknames from his lovely mother, but I've vowed never to reveal it.  However, upon receipt of a substantial check, I could email it to you.

TOD: I was so busy posting Nutcracker snow photos, I forgot the topic, so:
   TOM JONES
   THE FIRST NUDIE MUSICAL
   LA KERMESSE HEROIQUE
   DOUBLE INDEMNITY
   THE MUSIC MAN
And it will change tomorrow, or perhaps later with my moodswings.  Meds!  I need meds!

I must keep offending Dan the Man -- he disappears each time I post him a question.  I hope I didn't offend him by saying he looks like Charlie Brown -- but if the shoe fits... and I bet if we took a HHW poll, the majority would agree with me....Okay, I've done my part to help Mr. BK get those sponsors (i.e. money), so now it's up to the rest of you while I go check out the GGs ! Cheerio!

Darn, I have to wait until Keith is off the other computer.

Miss Karen, Sherlock is our 5½ month old Bernese Mountain Dog.

We have a bell (looks like a cow bell) tied to a ribbon near the door to the dog run.  Two days ago we began teaching Sherlock to ring it when he needs to go potty.  I’m not sure he has the potty connection yet but he has figured out if he rings it he gets a treat.  He also likes to go out and sit on the deck so either way he is rewarded.  Today he began ringing the bell when we weren’t around.  I get so excited every time I hear the bell & run to see him.

I'll take that as a compliment as long as you mean my postings and not the way I look...I get a kick out of all of you, too, especially how so many of the HHWayers like to talk about food (but they learned from the master, Mr. BK himself) -- I mean, an afternoon of postings about Russian dressing?  What a hoot!

It's all natural.  Everything about me is natural.

I am not watching the Golden Globes, but I will be curious to hear who wins.

Instead I popped in another Bollywood movie. KATHPUTLI (1971) starring Jeetendra, Mumtaz, Helen, Agha, Bhagwan, Milaka, and Master Chikoo.

I don't think it won any Golden Globe awards, but perhaps a special mention for " film with the most actors with only one name."

My guess is air temp since our air temp will be -16. The wind chill would make it feel colder than that. But at some point it really doesn't feel any colder.

We must remember not to go to the dog park on holidays.  The last time we met a total “bleep, bleep” was on New Years Day.  This time we met up with a friend of Sherlock’s from puppy class.  A big solid pit bull mix decides to hump Sherlock, after we chased him off Sherlock’s friend, while growling at him.  I began calling for the owner, who was sitting a good distance away from his dog, to get his dog.  He yells at me “what do you expect when you take a dog in heat to the dog park”.  With little control I “explained” Sherlock is a puppy and your dog is being aggressive.  The jerk said his dog was just playing at which point Keith had more to say to him.  Of course the man continued to let his dog “just play” in the same manner with lots of dogs.  Folks were constantly calling their dogs away from the “playful” dog.

Well... ;)

So...

Today's "walk" turned into a Comfort Food Bonanza.  I ended up meeting up with former DR Jason at Union Square, and we walked over to 2nd Ave., then turned onto 12th St...  First stop:

S'MAC (http://smacnyc.com/home.html)
More properly known as Sarita's Macaroni & Cheese

We composed our own "sampler", ordering three "Nosh" sizes of:

All-American - "Just the way you remember it as a kid! Nostalgia at its finest - a tasty blend of American & Cheddar cheeses."

Cheeseburger - "For the Hearty Meat Eater! Ground Beef done to perfection with onions, garlic and a hint of ketchup and mustard. Don't forget the best part - a combination of American and Cheddar cheeses."

Cajun - "If you are looking for some kick, here it is. Cheddar & Pepper Jack cheeses, andouille sausage, green pepper, onions, celery, garlic and, of course, some genuine Cajun seasoning."

Each dish was served in it's own small cast iron pan, and we ordered them all with the "bread crumb" option.  The verdict: YUM!!!

And then after a walk around the neighborhood for a bit...

It was time for dessert, so we stopped into:

Chocolate By The Bald Man - Max Brenner (http://www.maxbrenner.com/)

Where we indulged in:

Melting Marshmallow Hot Chocolate - Whipped hot chocolate with melting marshmallows.  A choice of dark, milk of white. -Jason chose "milk".
Mexican Spicy Hot Chocolate - With red chili, nutmeg, cinnamon and pepper. -My selection.

And then for our entree:
Sharing (tasting for two) - Which was composed of  samples of the following:

-Chocolate Fondue - Choice of milk, dark or white; we chose milk.  -Served with bananas, strawberries, and marshmallows. -And it even came with a small Sterno flame to toast the marshmallows.

-Chocolate ice cream - Choice of milk, dark, white or vanilla; we chose dark.  -Topped off with a "shell" of dark chocolate.

-Crunchy Chocolate Cream Snack - This what was listed in the menu, but it was switched out with a chocolate petit-four of sorts - a slice of a layered fudge - dark chocolate, and peanut-toffee.

-Popping Candies Chocolate Lick - A shot glass filled with Popping candies (Pop Rocks), warm chocolate truffle cream and white chocolate chunks.  Melted chocolate and pop-rocks... Who knew?!?!

-Warm Banana Split Waffle - A warm Belgian waffle, toffee bananas, chocolate sauce (served on the side in a small beaker) - to be supplemented by the chocolate ice cream.  -And a dish of whipped cream on the side.

Needless to say, there was a lot of chocolate on the table.  A LOT!.  However, I have to give MB credit for not making the "meal" a total sugar-fest.  The Belgian waffle was just lightly sweet, the whipped cream was unsweetened, and the strawberries and bananas were fresh and provided a "healthy" tinge to the affair.  We finished everything. Almost.

*And since the tables there are too small(!), our waiter "staged" our meal, starting us off with the chocolate fondue, and then bringing everything else to the table.  So it was like we were having a full chocolate meal: our cocktails were the hot chocolate, the fondue was our appetizer, and the main course and dessert was everything else.

Was it the best chocolate I've ever had?  No.  But it was really good chocolate.  And the gimmicky presenation (Hug Mugs, Chocolate Warmers) worked for me.  Our service was OK.  They just need more waitstaff - the place was packed.  *And their waitstaff are all stick-thin - "See, this young man/woman works here, and s/he must eat chocolate, and s/he is thin."  ;)  And due to their computer system going down, it took a while to get the check settled.  But, all in all, a nice "chocolate experience".  It's not something that I could do on a regular basis - just too much indulgence (even for me), but I'll probably be taking out-of-town guests there from time to time.

I haven't read any of the posts yet to see what's being said about the Golden Globes. But i'm guessing we are not doing spoilers. So i'll just comment on fashion (while they are rambling on now).

There are a lot of stars in the audience who i would like to see (their dresses).  I did not see the red carpet. But i would like to see J Lo, reese, kate winslet, jennifer garner, and a bunch of others.

One dress so far that i really did like was presenter Jessica Biel.

And then Jason headed up to the Golden - He just got promoted last week: he's now the merchandising manager for Avenue Q.  -And this just after he had been promoted to merchandise manager for Evil Dead: The Musical!  -The week before!

...And I ended up walking all the way up to Columbus Circle... I had to do something after all that mac'n'cheese and chocolate. ;D

Hmm... Have you resigned from Local 802?

It's over.

It was OK.  I've never really been one for awards shows - well, except the Tonys - but I thought it was a good ceremony, if not necessarily exciting.

However, and I'm sure other "critics" will make mention of this, it was interesting how the technical and directorial winners were cut off during their acceptance speeches, while the actors and actresses were allowed to babble on.

I've had too many distractions tonight to actually sit down and watch the awards.  Not that I'm all that wild about the Golden Globes anyway.  For the past ten years or so they've been billed as Hollywood's party night, where anything could happen but they haven't relly lived up to that rep for quite a few years.

They let the producer of the Best Drama babble on because the show had already gone past 11 p.m., so there was no need to worry at that point about ending at 11.

I really can't say I was disappointed with any of the winners. Many were the favorites, and in the TV categories, there are just SO many quality shows out there vying for these prizes that it's a shame every deserving person can't win something.

From my count, the top winner won 3 awards, and it happened to be a musical. Nice, eh?

I gather that Dreamgirls won a whopping three awards - this is nothing to shout about - it's not like NINE awards or FIVE awards - it's probably the lowest sweep in the history of the Globes.  I am the ANTI-cheerleader.
I've no problems with the Dreamgirls acting awards - but any other award!!

As with DR td, and no doubt a few other Hainsies, I collect Oscar nominated songs. The "soundtrack release of "Happy Feet" will create problems.  One Cd is of the score  and there is another of the songs - but they are not as they were sung in the film (Yet is the official soundtrack!).

Double Indemnity is a must!
Monty Python's Holy Grail
Somewhere in Time
Breakfast at Tiffany's
American Graffiti

Some others I would include:

Charade
Grease (okay, I know but I think I do need a cheesy one. I love the music but i cringe sometimes when a musical is made into a movie)
Lady and the Tramp
Circle of Friends
Chicago

Early in my Internet days, when I had Web TV (those who've read Your Worst Nightmare in my book of short stories know from whence I speak), I went into various singles rooms (I can't remember what the chat room service was called - maybe IRC or something) - in one, I was invited into a private room with a girl and another guy - the room was called the Hot Tub room.  I wrote about this adventure early on in The Real A One From Column A days.  Perhaps Michael Shayne can find it and post it - it's pretty funny.
