I like the film "Seconds". I remember watching it with my father one night probably 20 years ago when he was still living at home, and even though it was extremely late, we had to stay up to see how it ended. Good, and disturbing!

BK, why do you consider this film a "guilty pleasure"?

The fish and chips were a so-so thing last night.  The chips were sorta OK, the fish itself fine... but the rice flour batter was just plain odd.  Der Brucer picked the fish out of the crust, leaving a plate filled with odd crispy but unsatisfying bits that he didn't even feed to the dogs.

 :P

Tonight, Beouf Bourgonion, or however it's spelled.

Title: Re:FISH NOTES
Post by: S. Woody White on January 21, 2007, 07:15:02 AM
Der Brucer and I both used to smoke.

I quit first.  I ended up gaining fifty pounds during the year after I quit.  Not that this was a bad thing - I only weighed 145 pounds at the time, stretched on a six-foot-two frame - not pretty.

Der Brucer landed in the hospital with pneumonia not too long after that, and decided not to smoke when he got out.

I don't mind being around people who smoke, but I don't like them smoking if I'm eating - it's one flavor component I can do without.

Interesting discussion of feuds on CBS Sunday Morning mentioned that Bette Davis and Joan Crawford weren't acting as if they hated each other in BABY JANE, they really hated each other.  Did they grow to hate each other during the filming of BABY JANE, and why?  Or did they hate each other even before, in which case why did they do the movie?
Title: Re:FISH NOTES

I do not smoke. I have never smoked. I do not generally hang around with people who smoke. I do not like to be around smoke.

But I understand that some people do smoke and that those who do choose to do so have a physical need to do so. I think places should be available for those who smoke to do so.

But I am glad they cannot in airports, hospitals, and in some places, restaurants.

One commentator on feuds on the CBS Sunday Morning show said that one approach to putting feuds behind you can be if there's a practical reason to mend fences, in which case (if I understood correctly), if you can find that raeson to mend fences, you just don't acknowledge the past at all, just look to the future.  Interesting concept, I thought, one that never would have occurred to me frankly.

Fish notes?  Hmmmm, seems to me the topic of the day should be about fish, not pecan waffles and ducks. Since our Global Moderator (that sounds so powerful and omnipotent) didn't throw them out there, here goes -- and I, the lowly junior member, decree there are no limits on or to your answers:

1. What's your favorite fish to eat (and yes, you chefs can include how you like it prepared, and yes that includes shell fish if you like)?
2.  What's your favorite fish as a pet?
3.  What's your favorite fish in a lake, river or ocean?
4.  What's your favorite fish story (and that includes the one that got away)?
5.  What's your favorite movie about a fish?
6.  What's your favorite book about a fish?
7.  What's your favorite movie about a fish?
8.  What's your favorite song about a fish?

There, may we have tons and tons of lovely postings for fish notes -- and be at page 7 in the blink of an eye...

Bette never liked Joan, but it was more a professional dislike: she didn't consider her much of an actress and found her publicity-seeking ways (adopting children for the headlines, taking moral stands on issues where she was a prime participant) repellant. She also found her a phony, sweetly charming on the surface and a viper behind your back.

Bette was all for Joan in BABY JANE. She knew they were cast well (she was preturbed knowing that director Robert Aldrich had had an affair with Joan years before BABY JANE was made and was afraid he'd favor Joan over Bette in his shotmaking) and knew the combination of their names had a chance to put them back on the Hollywood map.

But it turned into all out war after Bette got an Oscar nomination for JANE but Joan didn't. Joan get the OKs from all the actresses who couldn't attend the Oscar ceremony to accept the Oscar in their behalf, and as it turned out, Anne Bancroft won but was in NYC doing MOTHER COURAGE when she won, so Joan got the moment in the Oscar spotlight rather than Bette.

Pecan waffles were delicious!  DH Richard is now outside, cautiously shoveling our driveway.

RE smoking:  Both of my parents smoked (my mother quit 35 years ago) and I'm convinced it contributed significantly to my father's mid-60's death of heart disease.  Also, to the fact that my sister and I have vulnerable respiratory systems - we don't just get colds, we get bronchitis and sometimes even pneumonia.

I have never smoked.  When doing a lot of theatre years ago I was always afraid I'd get a part that called for it and would have to have someone teach me.  Fortunately, Lucy and The Mute were not smokers  ;)

Wow, thanks for that juicy Bette-Joan info, MattH.

There's SO much more. There's a great book available called BETTE AND JOAN: THE DIVINE FEUD by Shaun Considine that takes the resentments all the way back to Bette arriving in Hollywood after Joan was already a big star. Among other things I remembered:

MILDRED PIERCE, which Joan won her only Oscar for, was offered to Bette first, and she turned it down in order to make THE CORN IS GREEN (which she didn't even garner an Oscar nomination for).

The poisonous atmosphere on the set of HUSH HUSH SWEET CHARLOTTE is gleefully recounted with Bette doing her utmost to get Joan to quit the movie. By this time, she couldn't stand her and didn't even try to mask her loathing. Also, if Joan had lasted, she was going to get top billing in SWEET CHARLOTTE rather than Bette (part of the orgiinal deal, and Bette would rather have died than ceded top billing to Joan.)

The Bears, Matt. Where I grew up, everyone was Bears fans, most still are, including most of my family. But I was always loyal to my state, so when a team moved to Indiana, I switched over. Bears-Colts would be unbelievable. But the New Orleans Saints are a great story, so that would be cool too.

As long as the Colts make it, my sanity will be preserved.

Don't know if it's true, but this was kind of funny and was in the trivia for HUSH HUSH on imdb...

Joan Crawford took sick and was hospitalized as filming began (see above) so scenes were shot around her, but when it became evident that she would have to be replaced, her role was offered to Katharine Hepburn and Vivien Leigh. Hepburn didn't return the studio's call, while Leigh declined, saying, "No, thank you. I can just about stand looking at Joan Crawford's face at six o'clock in the morning, but not Bette Davis."

Do you smoke?

Never!

Have you quit?

Didn't have to, but if I had smoked, I would never have found the will power. I feel bad for people with a nicotine addiction who have trouble kicking their habit.

What do you think of smoking being banned?

I am very allergic to smoke, it makes me sneeze and my head clog up and I have trouble breathing, even when I'm near people with smoke-saturated clothing, so I benefit from a smoking ban. The Wetlands Bar in NY used to have a smoking bar downstairs---that seemed like a pretty good solution. Outdoor cafes here allow smoking, but somehow I always am downwind and trying to have breakfast with cigarette smoke blowing in my face. Not very appetizing. But worse yet is when there's a huge group of people huddled around a door smoking and you have to walk through it an then you smell like smoke for hours. Hack, hack!

I don't blame smokers for our bad air quality---it's years of bad policy by our government regarding factories and the auto industry and our desire to drive our big, polluting cars. The smoke in the face is just what drives me over the edge of my tolerance level, which has already been compromised by the other factors. I appreciate smokers that take other people's breathing issues into consideration. I know there must be smokers on the list and I hope I haven't offended anyone!

1. What's your favorite fish to eat (and yes, you chefs can include how you like it prepared, and yes that includes shell fish if you like)?

Lobster. Just had one near Boston...it had been years. Yumm!
2.  What's your favorite fish as a pet?

The goldfish with the gigantic head in the pond at work. He's obviously the smartest one there. He likes to nibble on my fingers.

3.  What's your favorite fish in a lake, river or ocean?

Dolphins...I love to watch them in the morning leaping in the sun.

4.  What's your favorite fish story (and that includes the one that got away)?

My brother and I used to fish on the coast of the Cheapeake Bay/Susquehanna River. No story, just good times, although the water was too brackish for us to eat the fish so we would throw them back.

I like the film "Seconds". I remember watching it with my father one night probably 20 years ago when he was still living at home, and even though it was extremely late, we had to stay up to see how it ended. Good, and disturbing!

BK, why do you consider this film a "guilty pleasure"?

Because for years it was considered a terrible film by just about everyone.  I saw it at a sneak preview and they actually boo'd when Rock Hudson's name came on and by the end of the film there were only a handful of us left.  I loved it, but, I was pretty much alone in that assessment - critics panned it and it was a huge flop.  I suppose I can take it out of the guilty pleasure hole, because in the intervening years people have come to see its greatness, in the same way they've "discovered" Marnie and The Swimmer, two other films I considered guilty pleasures.

Second hand smoke hurts my lungs and makes me sick so I’m very much in favor of smoking bans in buildings & just outside the entrance.  I hate having to walk past a crowd of smokers to get inside a building.

I briefly smoked when I was 12, thanks to the wonderful influence of my sister.  Fortunately, very quickly, I realized an addiction to something you have to hide isn’t a good thing.  I also thought the other kids looked stupid smoking, so I quit.

Sounds like MR BK's show went well....screaming kids and CD sales!  Who could ask for anything more?  Get that show to another theatre, folks!  Will said photographer's pictures be on the WWW anywhere?  Was the CD sung by the kids in the show?

The CD is sung by the writers of the songs (and is played by their band).  When we're a little further along, the vocals will be removed and our cast will begin doing it - but for this first go-round, they lip-synch.  I'm sure they'll put photos on their website - www.thepartyanimalslive.com

And the injured actor did great - you'd never know he'd had the mishap, and the only thing he didn't do was his back flip.

I smoked for many years beginning at age 18, but quite about 10 years ago. I have fallen of the wagon a few times in the last 6 years but have no desire to smoke any longer.

Being around smoke never used to bother me but as my allergies seem to get worse as I get older I am finding smoke to be more irritating to my sinuses and it seems to make my skin break out.

The only time I have ever had a cigarette in my mouth was when I did Forget-Me-Not Lane at the Mark Taper Forum - no "herbal" stage cigarettes in those days, so for three months I pretended to smoke.  The good part was that I was playing a fifteen year old, so I didn't inhale, which was funny and worked for the character.

Good morning dear Esteemed, non-smoking and guapo BK -- you Party Animal!

Glad everything went well yesterday, aside from sound.  Don't you find it maddening that something that really should be non-complicated (like just some sound volume reinforcement)  can turn into such a tsimis??  And why so many sound engineers are so incompetent??

Anyway, it sure sounds like a unique type of show and format.  It would have been fun to see...........break a leg today (but not on the trampoline!).

Do we get to see any pictures of the cast kids??

Never smoked, but grew up in a house where both my folks smoked. I can be around smokers, but I don't enjoy it. The ban was one of the greatest things to happen since I've been in NY. Used to be if you went to any bar for even a minute you would come out reeking of cigs.

Glad to hear S&V went well!  Now, don't rest on your Laurels (and Hardys), don't you have some video to edit?

I got the tapes last Friday but post houses were closed Monday for MLK and then I left Tuesday AM for NY/Boston and got back at midnight on Friday night!

BUT---I am starting to load it Tuesday night after my session. (Tomorrow night we're hosting a forum about preserving the Strand, the art deco theatre I mentioned a few weeks ago.) It will take about 8 hours to load and I have sessions every day this week so I will do the loading at night. Since it's on BETA and mini DV I had to find another post house instead of the place where I planned on editing (which does not have a mini-DV deck.) And because the time code on mini DV is often iffy if not non-existant, I need to be able to load at full resolution because I may not be able to upres the DV if the time code isn't reliable, so finding a place with that much drive space who would let me work for free required a few calls!

I'm looking forward to seeing the show, and will give you a call after I have the material loaded and know what questions to ask. If I'm lucky, the 3 BETA cameras' tapes will have matching time code, and will have the board feed!

I went to see the play COMEDIANS off-Broadway a while back and there was so much smoking onstage that, even though I was in the seventh row, I reeked of smoke by the time the play was over.  Skip asked me if I'd been around smokers, and it said clearly in the program that there was a lot of smoking in the play so I could prove where I was  :) :) but they never said anything about it when I bought my ticket, that i would be taking so much of the "smoke" smell home with me in my clothing.

I think it would work better if we were working in a proscenium theater, but this show is being done on a thrust stage, and the stage is very close to every seat in the theater.  I think it will make a great many audience members uncomfortable, not knowing if they can move around or talk, or go out and get coffee.

Each actor is going to have a set time to use the water closet, which will be the only escape to backstage.

Yesterday, I was going to go to work but I didn't, but I got some TV watching done (and several things got erased from the DVR), and then I went to work concessions for Ladysmith Back Mambazo.  They were very good...a little repitious and sedate for me, but good and the audience loved them.  I left early though because my friend Margo called and asked if I wanted to see "Dreamgirls" again at 10:30.  I said, okay!  So, even though we just saw it last week, we saw it again.  It was still good.  I enjoyed it as much the second time around.

Anyway, we got out at about 12:45am, and decided that we were hungry so we went to Shari's.  Shari's was having a special on hazelnut items (waffles and other things), but I had my usual, their country skillet (country fried steak, grilled onions, green and red peppers, country gravy...all very good) and a diet Pepsi.  Then I came home at about 2:00am and went to sleep.  That was my day, yesterday.

1. What's your favorite fish to eat (and yes, you chefs can include how you like it prepared, and yes that includes shell fish if you like)?
     I have never eaten fish.
Although I do like goldfishy crackers. I had some on Friday. Miss Kayla traded me some for some potato chips.

2.  What's your favorite fish as a pet?
The Ladies. They live in a tank on the shelf in the living room. Their names are Lady and Lady.

3.  What's your favorite fish in a lake, river or ocean?
The coelacanth. I would say sea cucumber, but that's not a fish.

4.  What's your favorite fish story (and that includes the one that got away)?

5.  What's your favorite movie about a fish?
I don't recall ever seeing a movie about a fish. Unless you count The Little Mermaid, but she's not really a fish because fish don't have mammary glands and please don't get me started on that.

6.  What's your favorite book about a fish?
The Two Thousand-Pound Goldfish by Betsy Byars.

8.  What's your favorite song about a fish?
I Love Fish, as sung by Guy Haines.

Next, I watched PETE'S DRAGON. This has been sitting unwatched on my shelf for at least five years. I had only seen the film once back in 1977 when it was released, so it was almost like seeing it for the first time in some respects.

I thought then and I think now that the film is at least 30 minutes too long. You have this wonderful cast of character actors, but most of them aren't given anything very interesting to do. I do like some of the songs ("Brazzle Dazzle Day" is my favorite, and the number itself is by far the most inventively staged in the movie).

As for the transfer, the live action stuff looks as good as other Disney films like OLD YELLER and original THE PARENT TRAP when they were ported over to DVD. Rich Technicolor, and the transfer is anamorphic. They've repurposed the sound to make it Dolby Digital 5.1, but it's mostly just spread across the front channels with little surround activity. But the animated dragon Elliott is VERY disappointing on the DVD. While the live action stuff is rich and solid, the animated parts are grainy and look faded in spots, and since Disney was a leader in mixing live action with animation, this is a huge disappointment.

My Brother and the Big Can

Yesterday, my brother --  let's call him Bloogie, because that's what I call him -- and I went on a wacky adventure that is a long story in itself that has absolutely nothing to do with fish or big cans, although it does involve burned pizza, a rather nasty conversation about a camping trip, and an under-construction pita restaurant.

When we got back to the home environment, our neighbor -- let's call him Marco, because, frankly, I don't know his name -- was standing outside his house. Marco runs a restaurant supply business out of his house, so it's not unusual to see him schlepping a commercial refrigerator or the like up or down his driveway. This time, he had one of those coolers you see at convenience marts with sodas in them. This thing was about three feet tall and looked like a Red Bull can. We got out of Bloogie's truck and Marco called out, "Hi! How's it going?"

Bloogie called back for everybody on our street to hear, "Great! I love your big can!" And I laughed and laughed.

About ten minutes later, after we'd gone inside and I was busy drinking a Cherry Coke and Bloogie was doing something on his computer, he suddenly stopped what he was doing and looked up. He asked, "Wait, did I tell a guy I liked his big can?!?"

I said, "No. You told a guy you LOOOOOVED his big can!" And I laughed and laughed some more.

And then this morning at church, before Bloogie got there, I put a note in the sound booth where Bloogie runs the sound for the church service. The note said: "I love your BIG CAN." I forgot to take into consideration the fact that Bloogie is not the only person who sits back there.

This other fellow -- let's call him Pooger -- sits in the sound booth as well although I don't think he actually does anything back there. As soon as Pooger got there, Bloogie handed him the note and said it was from me. Pooger avoided me after that.

DR Cillaliz, what date did you pick to see CURTAINS?

March 1, Thursday Wanna go?  Rupert has hinted he'd like it if I saw it more than once while I'm there, so if there is another time you'd like to see it that weekend, I can always go again. I don't have tickets to anything else yet.

I loved the Brother and the Big Can Story.

DR Sandra used some of my answers about fish.

1. What's your favorite fish to eat?
Salmon

2.  What's your favorite fish as a pet?
The Ladies, who live in our living room.

3.  What's your favorite fish in a lake, river or ocean?  Bonytail chub and razorback sucker, just because I like saying it.

4.  What's your favorite fish story (and that includes the one that got away)?
Ginny's story about the fake fish and her grandma upset at how to tell her the fish were dead.

5.  What's your favorite movie about a fish?
I have no favorite fish movie

6.  What's your favorite book about a fish?
Jonah

7.  What's your favorite movie about a fish?
None

8.  What's your favorite song about a fish?
"I Love Fish" by Guy Haines. Second favorite is "Fish, Fish, I love fish, every shape and size...." from Vacation Bible School many many years ago.

Bonus Question I added: Which fish do you NOT like?
Crayfish, because they are not native to Arizona, and therefore are a threat to the bonytail chub and razorback sucker (see question 3).

Oh, I remember my favorite fish story. One of the four-year-old classes at the preschool has a pet fish named Pegasus. They feed him fish food out of a bottle with a picture of an orange fish on the label. Pegasus himself is sort of white with a blue spot, but the four-year-olds think that if they keep feeding him this food, he will turn orange like the fish in the picture. So every week or so, they gather around the tank and try to see if he's started turning orange yet. I thought about buying an orange fish over Christmas break and pulling the old switch-aroo, but I didn't because I wouldn't know what to do with Pegasus afterwards. Plus I wouldn't be able to get the orange fish to school because the only animals allowed on buses are the seeing-eye variety, and I think I would have a hard time convincing the bus driver that I had a seeing-eye fish.

Well so much for the new snowblower.  I awoke to a new 6 1/2 inches of new snow.  I leisurely had breakfast and went out to clen the driveway. I got out the "new" snowblower and nothing. It wouldn't start, wouldn't even try to turn over. I asked my neighbor what he thought. He tried and said he thought it just wasn't going to work. So I said "Let's try the old one" He helped me figure out how to mix the gas with a can of oil I found in the garage and after a little sweet talking to the old machine. It started up and we were off. We both got a big kick out of that.

Since I haven't even had the new one for 10 days, I took it back. The guy at the store tried to start it and said "It's not getting any compression, it's not doing anything " Hello, that's why I brought it back. Anyway, I was pleased, they gave me a full refund, no restocking fee (as the receipt says they can). I was most pleased and have decided that I'm keeping the old one.

It will do for now.  I always go to the same shop and there is only one person I don't particularly like. I didn't see her in there until after I asked to see if I could get in today.  It's ok. In Ashland they make announcement before a play if there will be herbal cigarettes (they never use real ones).  I'm not sure if you are warned before purchasing the tickets.  So far I haven't had a problem with the herbal cigarettes.

Can you smoke those instead?

The auditions went well today - again.  Not a bad turnout either.  And we had truly killer auditionee today.  She did so well, they were tempted to make her an offer then and there.  But since they have one more set of auditions coming up...  Also, it's technically not legal to make an offer on the spot at Equity auditions, so...  Calls to the agent have to be made first.  We shall see...

In any case, I had a good time.  Since it was for Jerry Springer - The Opera people were asked to bring in operatic repertoire, or at least sing a standard in an legit/operatic manner.  Some of the music that was put in front of me challenged me a few times - there's just no such thing as a "simple" piano reduction to a Britten aria/opera.  However, it was nice playing - and hearing - some rep I hadn't played nor heard in a while.  And there were some truly wonderful singers, including a coloratura soprano and a true spinto.

Dr JRand - As for the funniest song that was brought in... Hmm...  I'm not sure it was the funniest, but there was a woman I recognized from the first set of auditions I ever played in NYC about 10 years ago.  And I remembered her audition too.  And when she walked in, I wondered if she would do the same audition, and, lo and behold, she did.  It's very hard to describe accurately, but here's an attempt:  She sings "And this is my beloved" from Kismet.  She sings the first phrase.  Then she sings the next phrase but in a different manner.  Then the next phrase... and the next... Each time making an adjustment with each phrase.  It's quite the showcase.  -And the high notes are still there too!

Which raises a few questions for all the Dear Readers -

Do you smoke?

Have you quit?

What do you think of smoking being banned?

I smoke one cigarette a year.  If that.  It's just something I do, and I usually do it to "shock" someone (who knows I don't smoke).  -And I don't inhale.

I appreciate the smoking ban, however, I wish the law about not smoking within a certain amount of feet of a building's doorway would be enforced.  Some of the office buildings here in NYC actually have markers and signs telling people not to smoke "here".  But there's always people smoking "here".

In Virginia, smoking is still allowed inside more buildings , and, frankly, with the strength of the tobacco lobby, I seriously doubt it will ever get banned in VA.  -Although, some localities have their own bans in certain public spaces.  However, I appreciate the trend that some restauranteurs are starting to ban cigar and cigarette smoking in their dining rooms.  A side of smoke is never a good thing.  And I'm totally baffled by people I see with a forkful of food in one hand, and a cigarette in the other.  YUCK!

Hiya kidz. My sister gets back tonight from the impromptu cruise - I went to Costco to load up the house with groceries. Did 8 miles yesterday, and a quick 4 today. I just may be able to break 7 hours for the LA Marathon on March 4. Or not...

I must say I enjoyed BK's production of The Party Animals the other day. What a good cast - even the kid with the stitches in his leg - such a pro. The others are all marvelous dancers, high-energy performers. It is a cute show - and I think it could work really well in a full season, as the "youth offering" - like at Performance Riverside, that produces 5 mainstage shows a year, and brings in 2 or 3 kidstage things.

Bruce - send your DVD and promo stuff to them for 07-08. They have Charlotte's Web in May this year - yeah, on Cinco de Mayo, of course, instead of something Mexican... who is doing the thinking over there??? My guess: nobody.

Anyhow, though it started late for terrible reasons, I was able to stay and see it. Such a happy show!

We went through a lot of bait.

DR FRANCOIS - thanks the other week for the YOUR HOST WALT DISNEY info, I did get the DVD and enjoyed it very much.  The final song for "Rainbow Road to Oz" was very cute and I liked it a lot!

And it looks like the twelve will have to contend with others coming in.  This show's an embarassment to auditions.  I did love it when Ms Marshall supported someone, the Brit had a negative comment about the person, and Ms Marshall swiveled around like a well-oiled gate to his point of view.  I can't believe after her ONCE UPON A MATTRESS broadcast she comes out in public.  But I shouldn't be rude.

Who'd ever have thought that CHIP AND DALE (1947) would be a more obscure Disney short than DER FEUHRER'S FACE (1943)? Or that THE TRIAL OF DONALD DUCK (1948) would be harder to see than EDUCATION FOR DEATH (1943)? That's the way it stands now if Disney Home Video has their way.

Word is circulating around the Internet that Disney has put a halt to the series of Walt Disney Treasures, the annual set of archival dvds, packaged in a tin container, hosted and produced by Leonard Maltin. The series was close to releasing every short the company ever produced, but has now stopped short of completing the collection of its most important short subject star, Donald Duck. Wartime cartoons, silent rarities, lost Disneyland footage, the complete run of Silly Symphonies—all this and more have been part of the Walt Disney Treasures during the past six years (click here for a complete list).

For more information on the situation, or if you want to support the effort to keep these DVDs alive, I refer you to this thread on HomeTheaterForum.com.

...And I just have to wonder what kind of deal NBC and David Ian made with Actor's Equity in regards to having AEA members being featured on this program.  And now that they've chosen the final 12... And what happens if the winner is not already a member of Equity?  I'm sure they'll be required to join the union, but will they cover the fees and dues?  Or will NBC and David Ian foot the bill?

And what about the actors and actresses who have made it to the final 12 who are already members of Equity?  ...I have to say, knowing just how much work, practice, blood and sweat goes into getting an Equity card nowadays, it sort of feels "wrong" that they would put themselves through this process.  -And if a non-Equity member happens to win the contest, it would just diminish all the hard work the others have done.

DR MBarnum - If the pictures are already on the hard-drive, the easy way to do it is to simply drag and drop the files.  Find the directory where the pictures are stored.  Highlight the ones you want to backup, and drag them to the "blank disc" directory.  -Of course, be sure to insert a blank disc into the CD-ROM drive first.  And if they're all in one directory, just drag the directory to the CD "drive".

-And some photo programs have a "burn to disc" option too.

Re: GREASE ACADEMY.

spoilers.

I wonder what the twist will be. I don't really think it would be fair for them to include new people to the final 12. They specifically told the group that one of them would be the new sandy and danny.  If they hadn't made the rules clear then i would not have cared.

As for who they chose, it seemed quite clear that they did not want to take a chance on anyone who might not be able to do it. I really liked that girl ashley (who the co-writer loved).  She had such a star quality to her. But i doubt she could do 8 shows a week and it was clear they were not going to take a chance on her.

SAme with that guy (he was the final one they cut). So obvious they were going to take max over him (since he is one of the most talented).

As for who the chose, I really like juliana. And unlike previous weeks she was really featured a lot. I also like the ballerina (ashley).  And i like laura. I don't recall seeing her before the group number at the end.

As for the guys i like chad. And i do like max. There were a few others they chose who i did not like at all.

And as for the panel (marilu henner, marissa jaret winokur...) what exactly did they do?  They never showed them giving any type of input.

Also does anyone know how voting occurs? Is it online to? I'm curious if it will be US only (like IDOL) or if it will be for everyone (like DANCING WITH THE STARS).

I do not smoke.  I have never smoked, other than probably two cigarettes and three or four cigars in my life.  Every couple years I do find that I can enjoy a good cigar, most often tied to some cause for celebration, such as the evening of my college graduation.  I grew up with a cigarette-smoking father (thankfully quit about two years ago... too bad the emphyzema has grabbed some hold anyway), and rather detest the smell that never goes away.

As for the banning of smoking, however...  I didn't mind too much when restaurants went totally non-smoking in Washington state some years ago, but the bars did so last January after a ballot initiative which I voted against.  Sure, I personally much prefer going into bars that are smoke-free, but would much prefer the decision to be so be made by the owner of the establishment rather than the state.

DR Jennifer -

POSSIBLE SPOILERS

-The panel of celebrity judges were not judges, they were just audience members.  They showed their judgment by their reaction and applause while watching the performers.

-As for the "ringers" being brought in... Well... BK mentioned that "possibility" last week...  So...

-And I've discussed this with a couple of people here in NYC...  Who's to say the winner will actually play all 8 shows each week?  They've only been saying the winner will star in a Broadway show.  It doesn't say for how long, how many performances, or even if there's a guarantee that their contracts will be renewed after their initial stint is up.  I seriously doubt that if it turns out "America" made a mistake, that David Ian would keep a less-than-stellar person in the role(s).  There's always an "out" - on both sides.  -And if recall correctly, when Andrew Lloyd Webber started his "How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?" program, the original prize was to be the alternate/matinee Maria.  -Yes, still a starring role on the West End, just not for every performance.

-And it was "How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?" that was the direct "cause" of "Grease: You're The One That I Want", so... Yet something else we can blame on Andrew Llow Webber.  ;)

*And I don't think I've heard the current London revival of The Sound of Music mentioned at all on "Grease...".   -And David Ian is one of the producers of the that revival.

The editing is driving me mad too!  Especially during the songs.  Some very strange cuttings, and they even had some synching issues - "Oh, that's why they went to a long shot."

At least the producers only chose to feature/humiliate a couple of the losers.

Here, here!  Something happened here in our little town.  I don't like to smell like smoke -- or breathe second-hand smoke -- but even more I wouldn't like the government making that decision for me if I owned a bar, so I voted against the initiative here.  I tried smoking in college (to be cool and to be rebellious/shocking -- I went to a Southern Baptist university, so no dancing, drinking or smoking on campus).  But I never developed the taste for it, so after making "my statement," didn't continue.  I don't have an addictive personality...well, I take that back, I'm addicted to sugar......

Next I put in the first MISSION IMPOSSIBLE on Blu-ray. I only had limited time to watch, so I only got about 20 minutes in, but the Blu-ray transfer is quite nice. No, not as breathtaking in its three dimensionality as MISSION IMPOSSIBLE III, but it's certainly a step up in visual quality from the SD-DVD.

I enjoyed the GREASE Academy round of the competition, but once again, I was frustrated by not being able to hear everyone sing for an extended period. Hard for us in the audience to be able to judge fairly when you hear only a line or two of a song.

Same with the dance. I would LOVE to have seen the entire routine rather than trying to piece it together from the snippets we were shown throughout the hour.

They kept commenting on the quality of Max's voice, that he was the best singer. Too bad we never got to really hear it thoroughly. I am glad we'll finally have that chance next week.

DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES interested me only with Gabby's storyline tonight. The Bree/Orson/Alma business is just drudgery to me, and Tom and Lynette's business decision seemed a no-brainer after seeing Lynette at the street fair. The Susan-Ian story seems played out already. We know now she really loves Mike and always will. So, we have to see her twisting in the wind for weeks trying to make it work with Ian and not disappoint him the way his wife did.

Argh!

The reason the decision should not be left in the establishments' hands is it can be successfully argued that the smoke exposure makes these places unsafe for employees.

And there is a counter argument that so long as the employees are alerted to the situation before hiring, no employer jeopardy should attach.
