Title: THE BROKEN RECORD
Post by: bk on January 29, 2007, 12:18:23 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're just breaking some records now - they started with a Mrs. Miller album, and now they're destroying an Xaviar Cugat LP.

hmmm...fish

I don't really like fish....

I guess the best fish I have ever had was a straight out of the lake rainbow trout cooked over a camp fire. Whether it was the fact that I caught the fish or that it was the only food available, or it was just fresh, it was the most delicious thing.

Today at Dinner my grandpa was telling us about some of the things he has thrown away in his life that he regrets. For example a hand painted invitation to David Lynch's birthday party(painted by David Lynch) while shooting Dune....

One of the most spectacular fish dishes ever is the cracked crab in garlic sauce at Crustacaen.  You sit there and you cannot stop picking at it, lapping up the sauce with every bite.  Amazing.

My Aunt Lillie made the best filet of sole ever - fried, fabulous tasting and it was always served with her incredible home-made from scratch macaroni and cheese - the best mac and cheese I've ever tasted.  She once told me how to make it and it worked and was swell - I don't think I have that recipe though - perhaps I'll try and get it - she's in her late 90s now, but still sharp as a tack.

Good morning, all!  Yesterday was indeed a long day in Toyland but we finished the opening number of Act One which is quite long but contains some wonderful orchestral sounds.

Today, I have a visit to Times Square Studio to hear a bit of sound mixing.  I have some work on my Toyland report for Act Two, and I just began to print out a copy of the new libretto.

TOD:
Last night I had shrimp with garlic sauce at my fave Chinese place
I also like grilled salmon and tuna
Lobster, crab, scallops are all mighty fine
No calamari, octopoi, eel, please; I've always found calamari has the texture of eating one of those rubber fingers for sorting papers that office supply places used to sell.  And may still.

Good morning early denizens.

We didn't have fish on Saturday (our big dinner on Long Island for our lovely British friends). We had glazed ham, new potatoes in butter with parsley, mixed vegetables and biscuits. We also had a great chutney which our friend brought from Marks & Spencers. For dessert we had two different cakes (both coated in chocolate frosting), espresso and assorted liqueurs and cordials. We laughed and laughed and had a such a good time that our friends didn't leave until 10:43 which meant they got back to Penn Station at midnight. Ah, well. It was worth it.

I love shrimp, lobster, King crab (soft shell crab and regular crab is too much work) and most of all, salmon.

I actually had a simply delish salmon steak, grilled smokey on the bar-b-q, Saturday night.  Yum!

I like trout and tuna, too, but I'm a rather wasteful eater because I overcautiously pick around the bones.

But I guess my favorite is shellfish--crabs, lobster and shrimp.  A patter of crabs and a bucket of steamed mussels and garlic--Double Yum!

Monday morning greetings!  It's ver-r-r-r-ry cold here in SW Ohio today.  It's also the first Monday I've been in this building since Dec. 4 - days off, holidays, and a workday in Cleveland on Dec. 18.

TOD - salmon, grilled or baked; most whitefish; shrimp, cold or hot; Alaskan King Crab legs, steamed with melted butter; fried clams, especially the ones I had on the pier in Avon-by-the-Sea, NJ; lobster rolls on the coast of Maine; tuna in my Tuna Glop or in salads.

More GREASE from last night.

Oh and DR MattH, re: ashley and matt. I agree with you completely that they are really green and were the most nervous.  I also agree that neither of them could perform on broadway. However i totally disagree about the presence. To me ashley has huge star quality and presence (almost more than anyone else on the stage).  I just love her and wish that there was some way she could be trained vocally to play sandy.

I really suspect she won't go, even though she was the weakest. I have a feeling she is popular (although since she was so weak she obviously could still go).

Last night I watched a Rad Fulton double feature sent to me by DR MBARNUM.  And I am now a firm Fulton fan.

He was 4th billed in No, My Darling Daughter starring Mr John Mills, daughter Julie (as...well his darling daughter) and Mr Michael Craig.  Of course this was an English Rank film....so DD ended up with Mr Craig and NOT Mr Fulton, but there you are.

THEN a movie called Joy Ride that had this priceless cast list:

Ann Doran
Rad Fulton
Regis Toomey

Also featured were Robert Colbert and Jim Bridges.  AND a spiffy 1958 Thunderbird that eventually...after a LONG time....was taken on a Joy Ride!

When I was growing up my dad and his friends would go fishing in Canada.  They would bring home tons of walleyes and we would have them dipped in batter and fried over an open fire in the back yard (I think they were trying to recreate their Canadian experience)

My dad was bigtime into ocean fishing.  He belonged to a fishing club that ran out of his favorite neighborhood tavern--Zibby's Anglers (Zibby's being the name of the bar.)

His typical catch was flounder, which was one of our dinnertime staples.  At least once a week, flounder--floured and fried.  I kind of grew tired of it and no longer eat as much flounder.  But once in a while I do get a hankering for it.

Flounder is also one of the catches that oceanologists say have been so over-fished that they are likely to disappear in the next twenty-five years.  So eat your fill now.

DR Jennifer, we'll just have to agree to disagree about Ashley A. I found her hopeless in every regard. As I said last night, none of the Sandys blew me out of the water. The ones with the right look weren't strong singers, and the better singers didn't seem to have a strong stage presence.

I think finding a Danny is going to be an easier job.

I'm not much of a fish eater either, but I'll admit I'm not a gourmet. If I have to eat fish, I'd just as soon have the beer battered fried fish at Captain D's as any fried fish out there.

Last night, I put the movie ALEXANDER back in the DVD player. I didn't have an upconverting DVD player when I first got this movie, and I wanted to see what it looked like scaled up to near HD quality. What a magnificent transfer! Yes, the film has problems (though I still find it entertaining, and the view of the society with men loving men and women is quite bold and more than likely cost the film some money; Oliver Stone certainly believes it did.)

I have some Blu-ray discs coming in the mail this week, but until they arrive I'll continue to enjoy revisiting this film.

Hmmmm, fish is a hard one cause I love it unless it takes, well, fishy.  I'm not trying to be coy.  The right fish and the right chef, it's heavenly -- but otherwise yuck -- so I really debate whether to order it or not each time.

I like shell fish best -- popcorn shrimp, crab salad or crab cakes -- and of course, lobster with lots of butter.  The butter is the key, so I guess it's not so much the lobster but that butter!   Instead of killing that poor little critter, I really should just order the little vat of butter and I'd be just as happy...

Speaking of fish in shells, I'll be pulling back into mine and resorting back to my reclusive behavior here at HHW. We're heading out to LA to see the dress rehearsal of the SD 1-Acts at LACC -- Cason's directorial debut.  We can't make the SD 1-Act Festival this weekend since I have my orientation for my Master program I'm starting -- but we so wanted to see his play, that the dress is the compromise.  So do your vibe thing for Case and all the student directors, casts and crews

So troops, I won't be available to post like the dickens (ah, another one of those sayings that make you think what does "like the dickens"  mean .. or is it Dickens as in people who did something in a craze?...) on my travels.  So make like the Dickens family and post to beat the band (and what does that mean?).

I watched most of Grease last night but missed the first 4 performers. I tuned in to see Matt and then Ashley singing and thought they were atrocious. I was so relieved when the other singers started and thought the difference was vast.  I thought Juliana picked a terrible song as did a few others. If you have to sing in a broadway/theater style, it would make since to pick a song that sounds right sung that way.  Not something rockish that would sound better in another voice. But that's just my opinion.

I saw Dreamgirls for the third time this weekend. Unfortunately the sound in the theater was screwy.  We complained to the manager afterward who apologized and gave us free passes. He said that they had experienced problems earlier in the day and the person who fixes it was out getting parts. Now if you knew you were having sound problems why wouldn't you move the show- or switch it with another movie, I don't know, maybe one that wasn't a musical, where the sound wouldn't have been such a glaring issue?

I think bringing Matt and Ashley back was a HUGE mistake.

When they announced the final 12 and said that Danny and Sandy were in that group, THATTA shoulda been THATTA.

So WHAT if those two were so terribly disappointed to have been cut.  Broadway crushes dreams by the tons.

NOW they (one or the other, probably Matt) will be PROPPED UP by all the "chickie-pops" and "crush-boys" who think he seems like the yummiest thing ever to stand on two legs and will be their fantasy man for as long as they can prop him up.

I thought he and Ashley were terrible, compared to the rest of the group.

The show -- for all it wasn't -- totally earned my disrespect for this terrible move.

As a child growing up with a restaurant owner as a father, I fell in love with lobster, with lots of butter for dipping.  I haven't had it in years, but I've been thinking about it recently.

Growing up, I was a fan of shrimp (fried at first, and then shrimp cocktail later) and red snapper.  We always had catfish or crappie at home as my father loved to fish.  So did my mom, actually.  (Still does).  But the best fish always seemed to be had at the restaurants at "the beach".  We spent a week at Daytona Beach, FL, every year, and I loved my red snapper.

Years later, after not having eaten fish at all, I fell in love with calamari in Italy.  Still love it today, althought it's rare to find a restaurant that serves a tender, rather than chew, calamari.

I've come to love fish over the past few years....salmon, in all its forms, sole, tilapia, swordfish, catfish (especially blackened), trout...it's ALL GOOD!

Well...ya know.  WE (this here forum) MIGHT be able to make that happen.

As a group effort, that is.  We each would have to vote for Matt and Ashley each week a minimum of 200 times.  That might be quite sufficient to keep them in the running until the finals.

Unfortunately, though, NBC doesn't allow text votes.  So...I'm thnking there's probably a charge per vote.  Not much chance of this show falling into the same nasty trap that "American Idol" is subject to.

Warning about new knives:

They tend to be very, very sharp so be careful.  When we got our set of Cutco knives we all had a few serious cuts.

Now they aren’t as sharp, in fact I just sharpened a few of our knives.  Keith did something  to my Wustof paring knife & it was all jagged.  At least I have the knife.  Yesterday he helped me search the trash for it after I insisted it was the only place it could be.  I’ve learned the hard way if knives or silver are missing, check the trash quickly.

When Peter and I were up in Boston last week we had some down time between the NPR interview and the screening, so he took me up to a famous old place that serves fried clams (with or without "bellies") and we also had a big lobster with lots of butter. It had been years since I'd had one but it was deelish. They asked if I wanted to choose mine from the tank but I've never been able to do that, or to cook live ones myself. I just don't want to know my lobster!

Best fish I ever tasted:  blue dolphin.  Wonderful fish.

When I was XO on the Rockville (an oceanographic research ship) we spent a lot of time "lying to" in the Tongue of the Ocean near Andrus Island in the Bahamas. I used to pull cheap meat (liver) from the general mess to use for bait and we would launch the motor whale boat and go fishing for Dolphin (not Flipper, folks - dolphin is a game fish like mahi-mahi). When the fish are fresh-caught they have iridescent skin that rapidly fades after they are landed. A load of fish would be brought back to the stern, hoisted to the fantail (where the ship's cook filleted them on the spot ), got fresh bait, and set out back to sea.

Dinner that night was to die for!

- I know it's gross, but there are times during the Jewish holidays, when I was quite fond of Aunt Lillie's herring in sour cream.

What's not to like! I always keep a large jar in the refrigerator (I also like the ones in plain vinegar sauce - a great side for Ham & Cheese or Liverwurst sandwiches).

I forgot shellfish earlier, did I not?  I've never had oysters on the half shell, but I would like to try one.

I do love me some friend or steamed clamsd and oysters, and the steamed mussels at Elaine's and other places I've been were quite faboo!

A horror film about seafood? The Cabinet of Dr Calamari!

Methinks you've had too many fried or steamed clams. Moderation in everything  ;D

I forgot to mention that I ran into my neighbor today and she was telling me about dressing the meanest bitch on Broadway last week.  The lady's been notorious for years but since she didn't get rave reviews and no one's waiting at the stage door, she's getting ballistic.  We then exchanged horror stories we've heard about working on a show with Lauren Bacall, and I think the current lady is modeling herself after her.

I am sure that slugging her in THE SOPRANOS was payback.

If anyone is in the mood, I could use some help. I'm on the LGBTQ committee for our residential division and one of my tasks is to help put together a list of movies for our film night. The audience will be LGBTQ teens- middle school and high school aged.  Right now we're just brainstorming titles and most of what I've come up with so far are R rated- which is okay but I'd like a little variety.  Here is what I've come up with so far:

Set it Off
Boys Don't Cry
In & Out
The Birdcage
But I'm a Cheerleader
Camp
Longtime Companion
The Brandon Teena Story
Object of My Affection
Edge of Seventeen
Ma Vie En Rose
Get Real
Different for Girls
Beautiful Thing
The Incredibly True Story of Two Girls in Love

If anyone has other films they've enjoyed and I've left off, please let me know. Thanks!

Some of my fav teen flicks -- but may be too dated and may not be what you're looking for:

Sixteen Candles
The Breakfast Club
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Back to the Future and sequels
Edward Scissorhands

Others that teens might enjoy:  Indiana Jones series, Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles, and Monty Pythons Holy Grail (most silly)
Good messages:  To Kill A Mockingbird and Chariots of Fire

I think it would be awfully funny if this production of Grease got stuck with those two.

If you look deep, deep within the rules of the show, you'll see a clause which gives the producers discretionary power to make all final decisions for the good of the show. (IDOL has a similar clause.)

There is NO way David Ian would have those two people for his Danny and Sandy.

The part i don't get about bringing back matt and ashley is that their singing is so weak.  That's the part that surprises me most. If they were stronger vocally then i think i could understand bringing back 2 people who the fans like (they couldn't know who the fans would like).

I wonder if they think that the reason these two are weaker singers is merely because they do not have the experience.

I believe they "think" they're weaker singers because the "proof is in the puddin'"!  To wit, they ARE weak singers.  Compared to the rest of the auditioners, they're strictly amateurs.  Neither sang a song that showcased any vocal strengths they may have.  If either had a powerhouse voice, "much" could be forgiven.  But last night's vocals were dismal, compared to the rest of the men and women there.

For Danny, I'm pulling for Austin.  For Sandy, I'm undecided.

I'm thinking someone behind the scenes believed that Matt and Ashley might improve sufficiently during competition and with an opportunity to work with vocal coaches on a daily basis.

Only time will tell....if it hasn't run out already, that is (we'll know when the voting results are announced).

For those who watch THE KNIGHTS OF PROSPERITY, ABC has moved it back a half hour to the 8:30 p.m. timeslot to get it out of the way of AMERICAN IDOL. Since IDOL began, the KNIGHTS have taken a nose dive in the ratings, so ABC is at least trying to salvage the show, and I'm glad. It's a funny, endearing show that deserves a chance to catch on.

Very nice decor from last night DR George! I especially liked the clock.

Thank you!  I actually picked it out myself with no input from my sister or my mom. ;) My real estate agent gave me a $25 gift card as a thank you for being her very first (solo) client.  I used it to help pay for the clock.  Out of all the clocks I looked at over a period of a couple of weeks, this is the one I liked the most, but it was also the most expensive. ::)

TPunk - Do you know the film FRIENDS AND FAMILY?  It's a little different from the films on your list.  It's about two gay men who are a couple and also gangsters for the mob, but it's got very affirmative message about gay relationships and acceptance by others.  (One of my best friends wrote the screenplay, and Skip wrote a song that's in the movie.)

I watched this last year and it's quite delightful!

Good Evening!

Greetings from Richmond!

It took me a little longer to get my stuff together this morning, but I was on the road down to Richmond a little before Noon.  And since there was absolutely no traffic I made it down to my first stop, Steve's sister's consignment store, in a little over two hours.  Not bad at all, and I wasn't even speeding.  I dropped off the three bins of plush animals and other knick-knacks, then proceeded to head back into Richmond proper.  Well, I started to head back into Richmond...

Well... Long story, short... I got pulled over for having an expired State Inspection sticker on my car.  Between working in DC and having the car with me in NYC, I just haven't had the time to get the car inspected.  So... And, yes, I will admit that I was thinking I would not have to deal with the inspection before I give the car to the charity service, but... Ah, well...

The weird thing is that the cop wrote me the ticket/summons, then let me go on my merry way.  I can either pay the fine - I'll have to call the court to find out what it is - or show up in court with the inspection paperwork. I believe I'll be paying the fine.  The court date is not until the middle of March, so...  And I'm guessing that if I get pulled over again, I can just show the ticket to them.  ???

Any advice, DR Cillaliz?  ;)

And that was that.

And once I was on my merrry way, I headed over to my storage unit to check things out.  Yes, there's a lot of stuff there, but I think I'll be able to get everything there and at my parents' house in the truck tomorrow - I'm just not sure it will all fit in my room.  We shall see.

Then I made a stop at the store to pick up some dinner... Then I dropped off a spare CD tower at a friend's place... Then made my way back here to Steve's place.  And now I'm reading and posting.  With CBS on in the background.

As for fish...

I like it all.  However, I simply do not have the patience - or the "skill" - to eat crab out of the shell.  It just seems like so much work for so little food. *I'm also not too keen what cracking and twisting and breaking apart crab shells does to my fingers.

My favorite fish-fish are Salmon (the wild Alaskan and Copper River varieties preferred), Grouper and Halibut.

Favorite shell-fish: Oysters (raw and fried), clams (fried, strips), scallops.

And I like sushi too.

And that was that.

See how much the fine is vs. getting it inspected. In some states it's more expensive to pay the fine than to just go do it. Showing the ticket may work for a couple days, but it won't work for long, they'll say that you had time to fix it and give you another. Well, depending on how sweet your smile is that day. Technically every time you drive and don't have the right sticker could be considered to be a new offense.

Totally get the disclaimer.  The tricky part about all of this - and I mentioned this to the cop - is that I won't be driving the car for the next two weeks since I'll be heading up to NYC tomorrow (in a moving truck).  And I was planning on dropping the car off to the charity service once I headed back down to tie up any loose ends.  So, for now, I'm just going to deal with it once I get back down here.

Lucky? No.  It's just that I won't be driving the car for the next two weeks - it's going to be parked here in Richmond.  So... I'm going to call my mechanic in the morning, and see if I can go ahead and set up an appointment for when I get back.  Now, if the car happens to get towed while it's parked down here, well... -But I don't think they can do that since an expired inspection sticker is a "moving violation".

As for "Grease..." - again...

-Like DR MattH and others, I just don't see "it" in Ashley A.  What I do see is desperation.  Major desperation.  I see it all the time, unfortunately.  These actors and actresses get stuck in a mode where they just so want to get a job, that they start confusing their "want" with practice and preparation.  And they hope beyond hope that the people behind the table will see how much they want the job, that they will give them the job.  Alas, even though there is the occasional fluke, just telling and showing the "judges" how much you want to work for them is not what is going to get you the job.  You gotta show up!

Sadly, with David Ian - and/or the producers of the show - showing up on her doorstep and asking her to come back on the show, they just got her hopes up again, and they validated her "want".  And there's just no way that she will ever be Sandy once the show goes into rehearsals.

*Although, now we know why they spent so much time with Matt and Ashley during the taped shows.

**And, again, I'm glad the other "losers" were spared the spotlight and air time.

As for Lobster Rolls - Love 'em.  However, the one at Joe Allen is a bit of a disappointment.  The lobster salad is pretty good, but they serve it on Wonder Bread.  Well, it tasted like Wonder Bread to me when I had it last time. :-\

However, Legal Seafood has a wonderful Lobster Roll.

However...  I just wish they weren't so expensive.

However... I do love me a good Clam Roll too, and those are always quite the culinary bargain.

TOD:
when I worked in San Diego there was an excellent little restaurant next to my office called Catch of the Day. What great food they had! Not only great fish, but great soups and salads as well. I know I stayed at that job far longer just because of that restaurant.

MUSIC GUY mentioned a Scoma's in SF. Didn't know about that one. Scoma's in Palm Springs used to be a favorite of mine. Lovely sole.

I do love salmon and sea bass. I eat a lot of fish and chips, especially now that there's a Dublin-style chipper nearby. I'm quite the regular there. (Being right across the street from my favorite video store doesn't hurt.)

Just stopped in to say good night. I'm hoping that there won't be road blizzards tomorrow. If the wind is bad tomorrow the blowing snow will be bad and I won't be able to see. So....I'm hoping that won't be the case.

Right now it's 3 degrees with a windchill of-18. No wonder the heat doesn't seem to keep the house toasty warm.   I'm off to get under the covers...burrr...

I am not motivated to watch another motion picture at this time.  So, instead I am sitting here like so much fish.

Don't feel bad - my grandlads have consistently beaten me at any game that requires memory - 20 turns into a game and those kids can name damn near every face-down card on the table!

I've Gotta Crow - first time with Alet in the studio and a home run-and-a-half for her.  I remember making her do the crowing several times until I found the most joyous.  And I remember telling her to "catch the breeze" or whatever the lyric is - I wanted to hear that in her voice and boy did she deliver.

I have a bit of a haddock.  I think I'll take some aspirin so it doesn't get worse.
