Well, you've read the notes, the notes were full speed ahead, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're just sitting there like so much fish since they have no clew what full speed ahead means.

My Chic Chick card of the night had to do with when to break off a friendship/ job/ habit.

When something is detracting from your life more than it's adding too it- it is time to call it quits.

So True!!!!!! This was a lesson I have had to learn recently, as i have always had a problem with letting go or admiting a thing wasn't good for me anymore. Especially with video games.

As for the Topic of the Day...

In college: Calculus - I had tested it into the class, so... However, after two attempts, I finally switched back to Algebra to fulfill my math requirement.

Out of college: Programming an E-mu 5000 Ultra Sampler.  It was a pretty powerful piece of computer-music equipment.  Powerful and complicated.

In college: Logic, and second species counterpoint. (Never did do well at logic...)

Out of college: Linear editing was something I never mastered. I went straight from film to AVID with a short and very miserable period of non-linear.

The D-Vision editing system: This was an early, cheap non-linear system. Showtime bought a bunch of them for a series I worked on. They were horrible! They hired someone to teach me the system but it was futile. I had already been working on the AVID system, which is very intuitive and I could not make any sense out of how this system worked. They had budgeted a 4 week edit. I told them that if they rented an AVID for me, I could do it in two. I ended up doing it in 10 days. They wanted me to stay in LA and continue on with the series but at that point I was ready to just get home. (My car had been broken into and a lot of my stuff was stolen, including my camera and plane ticket...it was not a fun trip.)

And where is the D-Vision NOW??? AVID (and Final Cut) OWN the market!

Good morning, all!  I have a 9 AM meeting in Toyland, and after that the NYPL.  Beyond that, God alone knows.  I do know that before the day is over I have to schedule a complete physical exam with my doctor and update the prescription I tried to fill yesterday.

TOD:  lines.  when I was acting, I did two Ionesco one-acts, MAID TO MARRY and THE BALD SOPRANO.  Every line was a non-sequitur, especially the first one and the second had that whole crazy Bobby Watson exchange.  I thought I would never memorize the damned things and remember the cues as well.  I'm much better with a piece of music.

TOD:  Perplexing thing?  I'd have to see either tying my shoelaces or telling time.  The concepts of either one were hard to grasp no matter how people tried to explain it.  And then one day, Voila!!!  It all made sense.

For DR TPUNK - I will second DR MATTH's suggestion of BIG EDEN and add a German film called THE TRIO with Gotz George....

Father, daughter, and his lover are a trio of pickpockets.  When the lover is injured a NEW person comes into the mix.  And of course both of the pickpockets fall in love with him.

Re: last night's HEROES.

SPOILERS.

Am I the only one who thinks they give way too much away in the previews? I didn't find anything particularly surprising. They showed claire calling her mother repeatedly on the promos and the previews.  The one thing that i did find totally surprising was near the end when i thought peter had flown out the window.

I am so glad that claire found a way to reunite with zach. I don't know why but there scenes are my favorite. So now claire is now one of my top heroes to watch.  I also absolutely love hiro. He is so sweet. The only thing is that i wish he would start talking english more (as i have to lean towards the tv to read the subtitles).

I don't hate niki as much as usual. The stuff with the shrink is the most interesting thing i've seen from her.  And of course micah's revelation was promoted heavily (didn't they even show him saying his final line??)

Matt is getting very boring to me. Although his last line was cute. The sylar thing was predictable (to me). And i could swear the hiro revelation was also spoiled somehow (don't remember how but was not surprised at all).

One thing that i actually did find quite interesting was when father bennett saw the windchimes. Does he now know about claire and the haitian?

TOD:

In high school, I had a hell of a time with math--algebra, geometry, calc--I could not grasp the concepts and my grades showed for it.  During my initial tenure in college, I avoided my math requirements all together.  But then I learned computer programming and something clicked and I suddenly became a math genius.  When I went back to finish college, I took my math classes and aced them without a sweat.

One thing that I've never have been able to completely comprehend is chess.  I know some of the basic rules but I've never understood such simple moves such as castling or rooking or what a French Defense or King's Gambit is.  I even tried a few PC games to learn but they advanced too quickly for me to follow.  It is something that I someday hope to thouroughly learn.

Yeah, I hate how much they give away in previews, too.  We knew that Skyler was going to speak to HRG, that Micha was going to reveal his secret to his dad, and that Clair was going to contact her mother.  And the identity of the "Big Boss" that Hiro and Andro were being brought to had been revealed weeks ago in the various entertainment news columns.  The only real surprises were Matt's wife's pregnancy and Clair's mother's cigarette-lighting trick.

So who do you think is Clair's real father?  I'm thinking that it's either Niki's father (it did look like a large man in the previews) or that it's actually HRG, since he does seem to really and truly care for Clair.

TOD:  The most limiting thing I could never get the knack of is driving, or more specifically parking.

DR FJL,  I could not parallel park to save my life until I was in my mid 30's.  It became extremely necessary to learn once I started living in the city.

Yes, the basics of chess have always eluded me. I tried to play a few times as a youngster but it never made any sense to me so I let it go. I still don't know how to play and have no desire to learn.
Title: Re:DAMN THE TORPEDOES, FULL SPEED AHEAD
Post by: Ben on January 30, 2007, 06:33:58 AM
I drive decently but my parallel parking skills are not strong. Since I drive about once a year and avoid PPing when I do it's not much of a problem anymore.
Title: Re:DAMN THE TORPEDOES, FULL SPEED AHEAD
Post by: FJL on January 30, 2007, 06:53:10 AM
When I took my driving test so many years ago, IIRC, i did fine in terms of those points they deduct during the driving part, but went way over my limit of points in the parking portion of the test.  But i never felt fully comfortable behind the wheel, so i just didn't bother.  No regrets for now, it's just a fact of my life, but there are some (so far, minor) inconveniences, like when we were out at the Seattle-area festival last summer and needed the help of others (for example, the wonderful PennyO) to get around to social functions and such.
Title: Re:DAMN THE TORPEDOES, FULL SPEED AHEAD

Actually, that was great to "need" PennyO to drive us in Seattle, because it gave us more time with her, which was just lovely.

I have been driving since I was 17.  I have only had to parallel park twice in my life!

I hate left turns at busy stoplights (when there are no Left Turn lanes or signals).  People who don't use turn signals.  People who are turning onto a street and will not wait for you to pass, even though there is NO ONE behind you - and then they turn left after one block.

People who drive and talk on the telephone.  People who are out of their lanes making it difficult for you to turn onto a street.

Maybe I should just stop driving, too. :)

My biggest gripe about driving these days is not always being able to see beyond the vehicle that's just ahead of you because it's a humongo SUV.  With more and more of these gas gugglers on the road, it's more and more of an issue when one still drives a sedan.  The stupid thing is that this is one of the reasons I'm thinking of making the switch over to one.

As for math problems, I would have been a member of that group had my mother not been an algebra teacher.

I had a HORRIBLE Algebra I teacher, and I came home every day and my mother retaught me the day's lesson. Had I not gotten that firm foundation from her, the rest of high school and college math classes would have been a nightmare. However, due to her and her alone, I never had a problem making A's in all my advanced classes. In fact, I took trig in eleventh grade, and I remember one night, my mom came into the dinign room and looked over my shoulder while I was doing my trig homework. She said that the stuff I was doing was what she did her junior year in college. That made me feel like a million bucks.

Yes, I agree that NBC promos give too much away in advertising the upcoming episodes. I don't look at previews if I can help it, but it's hard to advoid the promos that NBC airs endlessly during commercial breaks for all of their upcoming shows.

Unfortunately for me, my local CW affiliate is preempting VERONICA MARS for an ACC basketball game. They are showing VERONICA at 11:35, but it won't be in high definition. Drat!

When I was in college I had the worst time with statistics. We had three textbooks and they seemed to me to be contradictory. I struggled and struggled and finally thought I'd reconciled it, only to learn that one of the textbooks was INCORRECT!!  How do teachers/schools get away with this? Surely they could have let us know. Anyway, I never could get straightened out after that. Once I learn something wrong it's difficult to unlearn.

End of rant.

I agree about the SUVs and the danger they pose on the highway but also in parking lots. I'm ALWAYS fearful when I have to park next to one that when I leave and am trying to back out, my little car will be obscured by the big SUV and I won't be able to see what's coming until it's too late and thus someone will run into me.

I understand that for families, they're great. My friend John has one, and when his entire family and I go out to dinner together, they're very convenient to pile everyone into. But otherwise, I do find them a problem otherwise.

I have tried Japanese, German, Spanish, and Hindi....it is fun to learn (or try to learn), but not easy...and it always irritates me when people insist that immigrants learn English, as if it is something they should learn overnight and feel comfortable speaking right away.

Did I miss it, or did no one already point out that AVID spelled backwards is DIVA?

Maybe that's why I feel such a kinship with it!

Actually, my DH will probably soon own his own DIVA. The letters stand for words like Digital, Audio, Interface, stuff like that.

He's going to work on a great documentary this summer, by one of my favorite doc makers. (He made "Standing in the Shoadows of Motwn.) They shot some of it last year and it looks like the director will be able to secure the funding and have a very nice shoot!

Should schools, instead, create immigrant-language classes for all the other students to take so they can communicate with the immigrant children?

Should all businesses be required to hire immigrant-language-speaking clerks?

I believe in giving folks breaks...and helping them to learn...and bending over backwards to ensure they have a full grasp on what is going on around them.

But...I draw the line at mandating that their language and their culture supersede our own.  If you want to live in America, learn to BE an American.

If I were to move to Greece or Italy or wherever, believe me I would attempt to "BE" Greek or Italian.

Oh God, I'm almost embarrased to say. I only did one episode and although the people were nice, we didn't know what we were getting into when the director and I signed on. She and I have had a long working relationship so we were able to laugh about it, but it was a pretty awful show that was supposed to be a women's answer to RED SHOE DIARIES.  It was called WOMEN, STORIES OF PASSION. When we went to their studio, we stopped in Mary Woronov's editing room and there was some sexually graphic stuff on screen. My director grabbed my hand and dragged me into the hall and screamed "We're making PORN! ARGHHH!"

I don't think it would qualify---it was less exciting than soft-core porn so I usually refer to it as "flaccid core". Every few month I would get a phone call from friends who saw my name in the opening credits. Of course, then, they "had" to watch it!

DR RLP, my point  was that many people that I know simply feel the immigrants should know English...now...immediately. They don't understand that it doesn't happen overnight (since, of course they have never tried to learn another language or have forgotten what it was like to learn) and that just because they hear someone speaking in their native tongue doesn't mean that that person is not learning English or desiring to learn.

I was just saying that learning a new language is not easy. I know a little bit of Japanese and German, but I wouldn't feel comfortable speaking it in public, and I know that many people who move here, or are here only temporarily, may know some English but feel shy about using it.

I think you read a great deal more into my post then was there.

And as far as learning to BE an American.....which is and has always been an everchanging mixture of cultures....that is a whole other topic.

You mentioned "Experiment In Terror" yesterday.   It happened to come on the TV (one of the TCM or AMC stations) yesterday or the day before while I was doing some work in my kitchen........I actually had to turn it off right after the opening and the garage door closes.  It is still just way too scary -- which obviously means that it is terribly well written, filmed, and acted!

TOD - Driving a standard transmission.  When I was ready to learn to drive, between my junior and senior years in college (yes, I was a late-bloomer), my father had a 1967 (can you say "vintage"?) Ford Mustang, with a stick shift.  He told me if I could learn to drive it, I could have it.  I never did get the hang of it and, to expedite getting my license, took the path of lesser resistance and learned on my mother's Pontiac, which was an automatic.

Oh, and singing, but I'll let DR Elmore tell you that story :P

Ummm.....sorry.  I allowed your post to set me off, but it wasn't about what you said...it was about things I've let simmer re: what's happening California.  immigrants want their kids in school, they want socialized medicine and welfare...but they don't necessarily want citizenship.  They work without social security cards and lord knows what taxes, if any, they actually pay (I'm sure it's taken out, but not sure it's actually reported to government).  There are plenty of businessmen here who want their immigrants to remain non-citizens....they work more cheaply, and there isn't any legal way to report what they pay them.

I didn't take your post to mean what I was talking about.  I thoroughly understand your compassion.

And as for the TOD:

yes, math puzzled me (and didn't interest me)......chess was hard but I learned it a little, unlike mah-jong which I couldn't even start to grasp.....My first full version of "Finale" software which had an instruction manual that looked like a phone book!.....

But all of that paled and was nothing, compared to having to learn about life, and which things are my business and which aren't, and which things I can meddle in and which things I can't.

The Universe should give us a better "manual and directions" book when we are born!

I believe that during my entire two and a half year tenure at Totally Hidden Video that all the editing was done non-linear.  In the early days, that meant that when one had to do a re-cut (and there were many) you went down a generation each new cut and there was new time code in addition to the old time code - the editors would have to do list management and it was so cumbersome and awful.  Sometimes there were so many cuts that the time code windows all but obscured the bit.

They have Hybrid SUV’s now.  The SUV’s are also more comfortable & quieter than they used to be.  Having one is a necessity for us & they are always Keith’s car.  I only drive it when I have no other choice.  Other people love them, Keith is indifferent.  They are nice for traveling, I can view the scenery so much better. :)

In the "totally not the same thing" department:

My boss has the same problem with documents she creates in MS Word.  Her "tracking" functions are always active and she cannot see the new-growth forest for all the trees that have been hewn down.

She always e-mails her documents to me to "fix"...and once I get them, I have to select the documents, turn off the tracking features and then turn of "Markup", which is a secondary tracking function.

Once I can see what's left of the document, I can make some sense of it and send it back to her.

She is always amazed that I can make all the extraneous bits & pieces go away.

I don't plan on letting her learn how I do that, either.

As to SUVs, I loathe and abhor them.  Yes, I understand why families like them, but roads were not designed for them, they take up too much room in just about every parking space in parking lots (also not designed for them) and what's more the majority of their owners (not YOU, Jane) are spoiled, selfish people who think being in such a thing gives them the right to own the road and drive however they please.  I also find that the majority of cell phone abusers are in SUVs.  They block traffic, they take up too much room on residential streets (you literally cannot fit when one of them is driving one way and you're driving the other - someone has to pull WAYYYY over).   Otherwise, I suppose they're fine.

I had to learn a tap number as Albert in "Bye, Bye Birdie" -- the "Put on a Happy Face" number at a train station.

The choreographer was the person I danced with onstage (cannot for the life of me remember what she was "supposed" to be ... the lady didn't want to be whatever the script called for, so she changed her role to a cigarette girl carrying a tray of cigarettes like they used to do in nightclubs in the 1950s.  What a cigarette girl was doing at a train station in a podunk town, though, nobody could tell you).  I could do the moves, but she didn't allow me to wear taps. Something about my not having time to learn to tap AND do the moves, too.  So she wore the taps and I foot-synched.

I write in Word, but I'm not sure what you're talking about, Ron.  I just have a blank page.  I know there are things you can turn on to have marks all over the page (like paragraph markers, etc.) but I don't even know how to turn those on. The only thing Word does automatically is put lines under words or grammar or sentence structure that goes against whatever program it has to detect such things.

If you have a document you wish to edit, but you wish to track what it is you've edited (i.e. see what you've changed), you can go to TOOLS/OPTIONS/TRACK CHANGES and set your document up to have edited portions marked with lines through the deleted matter, or with new material in blue or red or green (depends on the version of MS Word you have).

Also, in Word, there is a VIEW/MARKUP function (I believe I have Word 97)  That function blows me away as it doesn't so much mark what you've changed as simply adds new words you type.  It often looks like extra words have been typed...yet when you try to delete them, they won't go away.

I don't use either function, but I often find myself disengaging them on documents where they have been used.

Mister Cory is a terrific film that I think you will enjoy, MR BK.

One of those U-I CinemaScope Tony Curtis/Blake Edwards flicks.

A Mancini score and some good supporting performances, especially Martha Hyer (with her gorilla-like arms), Charles Bickford, Kathryn Grant, and William Reynolds (among others).

Hyer was never more beautifully costume, coiffed, and photographed.  I would guess she is breath-taking on the BIG screen...and Curtis is no slouch himself as the busboy turned gambler.  All of the white dinner jackets fit like gloves.

Greg would rather drive a smaller car but he has to fit so much sound gear and a cart in, so he has an Isuzu Trooper, his second. It's 13 years old so he hopes it will hang in there until the hybrids have been out for a few years and he can get a used Highlander hybrid.

My car is the most fuel efficient non-hybrid car---the Toyota Corolla, my third one. We still have my 17 year old Corolla, which runs like a dream, with over 215K on the original clutch. It's our backup car, and always so reliable!

Speaking of---I went to the car tag office and registered my cars in Fulton County. I have been a resident of Cobb Co. for 37 years, so I really felt like I cut the apron strings and made a big step towards moving out of (racist, homophobic) Cobb!

Oh, and singing, but I'll let DR Elmore tell you that story :P
:'(
Ah yes, singing is the  biggest thing that I cannot do that annoys the heck out of me. I just can't get my voice to sound the way it should! A travesty because I would be so cute in musicals, but I am forever to be walk on actor #4.

Luckily so many of my favorite musicals have non-singing or chorus (lip syncing) parts! ;D

Thought I would like OPERATION PETTICOAT best....but that was NOT the case.

DR ADRIANNA PATTI lost her "life" yesterday.

DR Adrianna Patti, the secret to winning the Game of Life is to always get Revenge as often as you can.  And when you do, use the "10 spaces back" option--that always upsets little kids more than simply taking $10,000 away (I find that most kids under eight have little concept of $10,000--it means nothing to them.)  Send that kid back 10 space a couple of times and you'll cripple his confidence for the rest of the game.  You will zoom your way to Millionaire Acres in victory!

When playing the Game of Life, you have to be ruthless!

I've done a lot of financial analysis and am fine with that now. Like so many things, it's a sort of mindset and once you get accustomed to it you're fine. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to UNlearn, then RElearn before the course ended.

We've had some excitement here in the library today and, for once, it didn't involve bodily fluids or calling 911.  No, the PBS series History Detectives had a crew here filming a segment.  It'll air sometime in the summer and has something to do with a film projector that was used in the briefings for JFK on the Cuban Missile Crisis.  And they were filming over in the area where I just put up the I [heart] BOOKS display, so maybe it'll be on TV!

IMHO the whole immigrant debate reeks of so much xenophobia....and of course it is a debate that has been going on for ....well, forever, I guess...only the names have been changed.

I imagine there were more then just a few native American's who thought the pilgrims should have dropped English and adjusted their European ways to better fit in with the new (old) world.

elmore - I don't put up the amazon listing until a week before its release - they get too confused otherwise - same with CD Baby and iTunes.

As to myspace - I'm not sure I want to put up the tracks yet unless Cason (who maintains that page) can figure out how to not put up full versions - I don't really want people to be able to download full versions of any of the songs for free.  I'll ask him if he can do partial and then fade, like on the Kritzerland site.

Just heard from the guy who's mastering The Creature soundtrack.  I'd sent him what I hoped was a reel-to-reel of the songs, so he'd have the best quality for those (the ones I'd sent him were sub-par compared to the score tracks).  He just called to let me know that the long-lost alternate Creature vocal (more of a character voice) is on the tape, so we'll include that with the CD.  Even better, there are instrumental-only versions of the three songs, so we're going to include those as Karoke sing-a-long tracks.

Monet posts reminded me to mention a couple of my favourite  art books.  My Scanner is no longer connected to the computer.  Maybe one of the DRs can finda suitable link to the following books by Brenda Northeast.
For The Love of Vincent
For The Love Of August

Charming books.  I think published in Australia about 1997.

I watched two movies this afternoon.

I began with Paul Newman in THE LEFT HANDED GUN. I know the film wasn't well received, buit oh, boy, does it have its wonderful moments. I can imagine Newman becoming a major heartthrob after this film. He's not all that attractive playing a pug in SOMEBODY UP THERE LIKES ME (great performance, but his manner and look isn't as  a glamor boy as it shouldn't have been), but in this, he's a walking, talking wet dream, a very charismatic performance.

What an erratic transfer! My heart was wounded as the film first started and there were all these water marks and a blurred picture. As the film continued, many scenes were sharp and clear and spot free, but then we'd get a long shot that looked like a second or third generation dub and then we'd be back to sharp again. There were some pretty noticeable black scratches later in the film, too. This was the best print Warners could find?

I also watched the featurette on costume designer Ray Aghayan and enjoyed hearing his comments on the clothes for the movie. Explained a little about the wardrobe and its oddity in her career.

There's another featurette on the making of the film itself which I saved for when I go back down later today. There's also a running commentary which I will listen to parts of.

Amazing that they went to all this trouble for a film that has never been highly regarded. Good for Fox!

As many will recall, when I visited New York for the first time in 2006, my favorite thing was to be able to hear so many different languages spoken on the street everywhere I went! It just made me happy! I am sure people must have wondered who was this grinning yahoo walking up Wall St!  ;D

You can get that in London and Rome and Lisbon and Madrid and Munich and Berlin and Athens and Istanbul, etc.

Lots of tourists and lots of immigrants, too.  And tons of cultural diversity.

The xenophobia kicks in when elements of longstanding local culture get PC'd out the window because other ethnicities don't participate in observing them.  As fewer and fewer people adhere to older traditions, newer traditions, some based on immigrant traditions, take hold.

Yes, the ghosts of Native Americans are probably smiling as this culture continues to blend and merge and the traditions of the conquering "white man" begin to disappear as the melting pot begins to consume all that was in favor of new cultural phenomena.

We are in a cosmic production of "Fiddler on the Roof", and "Traditions" continues to be performed with great sorrow...and perhaps, a little hope.

those values aren't their values, or their religion tells them to be offended and not to bear it.

Which is exactly the reason why things got to the point of needing or having things being P.C in our county....which really is only simple politeness.

But I will agree that P.C. does at times go to extremes and to a point of silliness and hypocrisy.

I have buddies who are all for political correctness as it pertains to gays and lesbians, but they get there knickers in a twist when it comes to other ethnicities, religions, or beliefs that aren't theirs.

If people would follow the golden rule then P.C. would not have ever been needed. Unfortunately, itis needed to an extent and has made life all the better for many of us. Not in the "lets ban Charlie Chan movies"  or "we must remove all smoking from vintage cartoons" way, but in the "Yes, let him or her swear on the Koran if that is what they believe in" way, or the "Perhaps we can have a holiday party (rather then only a Christmas party) so that we can celebrate all the holidays that occur at this same time and not make is seem as if Christmas were the only holy holiday at that time of year.

I am not for any of those who practice P.C. by limiting free speech (such as the Charlie Chan ban which was most ridiculous), but I am also not in favor of those who promote free speech that purposely hurts others.

Of course your mileage may vary and it is only my opinion.

That's pretty cool!

We are working on restoring a theatre on our town Square. This talk of political correctness brought to mind a question we have been debating.

The theatre has a "colored" entrance that led to the balcony. (Stairs too narrow to roll down...) Some would like to keep that as part of the historical context of the theatre, others would rather whitewash the past and pretend it never happened. I would be interested in what some of our DR's think.

Hi DR Edi....   Some years back, I played down at the Rylander Theatre in (I think) Americus, GA.   It has had a nice restoration, and has an organ re-installed back into it.  It too has the not-too-uncommon feature of a "coloreds only" outside entrance and box office, which led up to an upper balcony.  It is all still intact, and that way it is history that can be learned from.........and hopefully not repeated!!

Things like that should be left intact.  It's a part of the history of the building, the town and the country at that time.  Revisionist history is rarely a good thing.

If the plan is to restore, then I would suggest keeping it and perhaps a plaque or such explaining to the new generation what it was all about. It would be quite an interesting history lesson for some, I imagine.

Der Brucer and I had some fun today, once he decided it was time to get the chores done.

We were going to get haircuts, but that's going to have to wait, as our barbershop is closed on both Monday and Tuesday.  Monday, we had expected, but not Tuesday as well.

Then there was the matter of the car's registration.  This involved driving over to Georgetown to the Department of Transportation, discovering that der B had somehow lost a piece of paper that he needed, driving back home, still unable to find the paper, calling the Dept. and finding out that he didn't need the paper he thought he had to have, driving back to Georgetown, and getting the registration renewed.

Final two chores were back here in Rehoboth Beach.  First, I needed new shoes (the ones I've been wearing to work had literally worn holes in the soles), and then some groceries for tonight's dinner.  While at the store, Stacy, one of the floor managers, came over and asked if I'd gotten her phone message, asking me to come in earlier tomorrow.  Well, no, I hadn't been near the phone, and sure I'll come in earlier.

And that has been my day.

The shoes look good, by the way.

In the small town where I visit each Christmas, there was a theater once.  It was open when I lived there in the early 50s, and remained open through the 1960s.

I remember there being separate entrances...and the candy/popcorn concession had two sides, both glassed, with counters.  You passed the concession on the way into the theater through each entrance.

I remember asking why I couldn't sit up there in the balcony.  It sure seemed like there'd be a better view of the screen from there.

MBrnum-I too enjoy the ethnic & race diversity of the larger cities & have greatly missed it in some of the towns we have lived in.  It must be exposure since most immigrants to those towns learned to speak English & worked hard to balance their two cultures.

On the other hand I have met too many people who don’t make an effort to learn our language & then have actually criticized me for not speaking theirs.  One reason why so many Californians have little patience for the situation there.

It was SOOOO beautiful on the drive home tonight.  It's a 2 hour drive and I left driving west and south right at sunset.  So to the west the sky was a lovely pink with jet trails....to the east was a nearly full moon a dark sky and stars. It was totally cool and made it a really relaxing drive

No. I went up for business so I didn't take one.  I don't think I could have captured it. You'd have to see the entire sky (which is huge there because the land is very flat)

As someone who LOVES historical buildings--most old buildings, in fact--I would want the "colored" sign kept. Not only is it original, but it's a poignant reminder of a part of American history that we should not forget.

DR Edi - about the "Colored Entrance" is it a sign or painted on the wall?  I am totally into history too and think it would be interesting to leave it, but if it's a sign it could be removed and perhaps put in a display case with other items from the old days to allow people to see the historical perspective.

Or, you could leave it where it is and put up some sort of plaque or description next to it, explaining the historical significance for those too young to remember

I like driving. And i am quite good at parallel parking. But i had to do something today that i cannot remember the last time i had to do. I had to parallel park on the left side of a one way street (with parking on both the left and right side of the road).

As i was doing it i realized that i always parallel park on the right side of the road. And it was actually sort of tricky to do it on the left side. Plus there was not too much room to squeez into the spot. But i did it (2 tries).

I still remember the parking test on my driving test. It almost made me fail. Because on the first try i hit the curb. And we were not allowed to hit the curb. But i asked if could try again and got it on the 2nd shot. And he passed me.

Thanks for all the feedback about the entrance. I think they shouldn't whitewash our history, so to speak, but give it some context. I will do some research and see if there is a tasteful way to handle it. The "colored only" sign has been gone for a long time, but the entrance remains.

Hi DR Edi....   Some years back, I played down at the Rylander Theatre in (I think) Americus, GA.   It has had a nice restoration, and has an organ re-installed back into it.

We have been very fortunate to have a 1927 15-rank Robert Morgan Theatre Pipe Organ donated to the Strand by the Atlanta Chapter of the American Theatre Organ Society. I don't know if there was ever an organ installed in this theatre (it was built in 1935) but we're certainly lucky to get this one.

The Rylander is one of the theatres that is always mentioned as a success story. We plan to make a field trip down there to check it out. If we do get our theatre going maybe we can bring you in as a guest performer!

That would be lovely---I'd love to see it. It is in my nature to do a doc on this, but I also have mixed feeling about it, since the owner, who will still own the theatre and will not give up his demolition permit, is the city councilman we brought up on ethics charges last year.

Included were an action star outed, a basketball player who had his knees broken, a sitcom star diving into heroin addiction, and the magazine publisher made to give up his source by two threatening hoods who offered to chop off, fry up, and feed him his private parts.

Also in attendance, Ellen Greene, Adryan Russ, my booklet designer, Doug Haverty, Emmy-winning director Paris Barclay, and many others.

I love Ellen Greene!  I have her solo CD (http://www.amazon.com/His-Eyes-Ellen-Greene/dp/B000E4S9ZA/sr=1-7/qid=1170228163/ref=sr_1_7/102-7422810-3076119?ie=UTF8&s=music) (no longer available) and it's quite good...except that, from what I remember, all of the songs (as good as they are) are pretty darned depressing.  There wasn't a happy song on the whole CD.

I have become so used to staying up late and sleeping in. Soon I have to adjust back to school time. Bed at 10 (well, 11) and school at a lovely *(a cpapitolized 8?) in the morning, meaning up at 6:30. nooooooooooooooo

I didn't see the first couple of episodes of "Dirt" so there's some previous information that I don't have about the stories, but there's enough to keep me interested in watching it a few more times, at least.
