IDOL/San Antonio auditions:

Same old, same old.

But I was shocked that a really wonderful singer early in the show (came dressed well, had a really nice demeanor) with a better and more distinctive voice than Katherine McPhee, and she BARELY made it to the next round. None of them were overly complimentary, and her voice was pure and true! Later singers they praised to the skies, and I found them barely tolerable.

I wonder if you were taking about a girl who actually looks a lot like Katharine McPhee. She had long dark hair and a black pantsuit, with no back.

My two favorites i think were bailey brown (sp?). She was the 16 yr old from the small town who loved the fashion magazines. Simon said she could easily be turned into a popstar.

I was not expecting her voice to sound like it did.

I just really liked her personality and think the public would like her.

The other one i liked was the girl they saw for a second time. I can't remember her name. She's the one who made the faces.

I didn't love her. But something about her spirit and everything combined just seemed so lovely.

Wednesday morning greetings!  My library is on a 2-hour delay due to the weather, which means that I'm going through the motions to get ready to leave about 10am.  However, hope springs eternal that they will decide to close.  Since the county where we live (not the county where I work) is still on a Level 2 snow emergency, I'm not really supposed to be on the roads anyway.

Many thanks to DRs Jeanne, Elmore and Jose for the moisturizer/Magic Flute recommendations last night.  Since there is a Trader Joe's just a few blocks away from my office, I'm going to go buy some of their stuff at lunch.  Right now I'm using Neutrogena's Norwegian Formula hand cream and while I like the smoothing results it still feels thick and greasy.

I've searched Amazon and eBay for the Haitink MAGIC FLUTE, but it looks out of print and expensive, so for now I'm going with the Klemperer.  It also has Lucia Popp in the cast, this time as the Queen of the Night.  I might also pick up the Bergman film--I've never seen the whole thing.  I'm hoping that the Met will release a DVD of the recent Julie Taymor family production.

And the word of the day is: AVOIRDUPOIS!
Casey would waltz
With a strawberry blonde,
And he was glad that they had chosen as their dance
A dance where they kept their feet on the ground
And he was not required to lift her high in the air
(As he would have had to with some of the dances of the swing era)
Due to the strawberry blonde's advanced AVOIRDUPOIS.

I awoke today to find two remarkable things.

First, all five dogs were on my bed, without fussing, all waiting for me to wake up and get them breakfast.  I sometimes get four dogs waiting for me on my bed, but five is a remarkable occurance.  (And why, oh why, had they left poor der Brucer to freeze all alone, I ask!)

Second, when I looked out my window, I saw a great amount of white on the ground and on the trees.  Yes, it has taken us a week into February this year, but we finally have snow here in Rehoboth Beach, DE.  By which I mean, we have snow clearly an inch or two thick, and not the simple dustings we had earlier.

We also have sunshine right now, which seems all the brighter reflecting off of the snow.

I love this place!

That's exactly whom I was talking about. She was my favorite singer of the night with pitch truer and sound purer than any of the others they put through that we heard. She was sophisticated, a rare commodity on this program.

I had thought I wouldn't watch the clip show tonight, but I guess I will record it since they promise to show us some of the other good singers we haven't seen yet. If I record it, I can skip through not only the commercials but all the rotten performers they love to dwell on and be done with the show in 15 minutes.

I agree with both DRs Jennifer and Matt about the singers in last night's "Idol" auditions.

It was quite a pleasant surprise to have several GOOD auditions aired when we've been handed all the rubbish over the past two weeks.

That said, I cannot imagine what "worse" they could possibly show us tonight.  And I suspect it's mostly "rehash".

DRDan(theMan). my only caveats with the Klemperer, which is  very musical, gloriously sung, and with an all-star cast in the smaller roles:
  1.  No dialogue, and I believe a bit of dialogue between the numbers helps convey the sense more that Mozart wrote what was essentially a musical comedy.
  2.  By today's standards, with vocal appogiaturas especially, it is very conservative and late 19th-Century on its approach to 18th-Century vocalizing.

I'd go with the Christie recording myself, but I must say that the DVD I submitted is quite lovely and magical.

Good morning, all!  I had a very restless night, got up at 6:30AM and cancelled all my appointments today and went back to bed until 10:30. I couldn't log in earlier and now here I am!  I will stay in and finish my IRS tallying.

I received last night the new cast recording of Weill & Brecht's HAPPY END from San Francisco's ACT.  I love Michael Feingold's English text and the cast is quite wonderful.  What a great score.  Now we need a complete unexpurgated Blitzstein THREEPENNY OPERA to compliment it.

DR MattH, much as I love Patti Lupone, she's not my ideal Merman singer, so I prefer the old 1960s revival with Eileen Rodgers and Hal Linden.  I'd like the EMI 1934 reconstruction more if it were better conducted and cast, and I worked on the recording!

DRDan(theMan), my favorite Dickens adaptation is probably the David Lean GREAT EXPECTATIONS.  I love the old MGM DAVID COPPERFIELD with WC Fields, but the rapport between Daniel Radcliffe and Maggie Smith in the BBC version give it a preference for me.

Woody - There are clear connections between PEANUTS and FOLLIES.  The song about Lucy and Jessie has parallels to Lucy in PEANUTS, and of course Charlie Brown's sister is named Sally, and she was frequently standing at the door (though not moving to the bed).  So that explains your dream.

And the TV version of David Copperfield was not great looking but it had an excellent cast, including Ron Moody playing to type---this time as Uriah Heep.
This one had my favorite Micawber: Ralph Richardson. And Olivier as Creakle!

Just had to write a long and strong e-mail.  On Monday, I'd called the Colony Theatre to see about booking our CD release party for The Brain there, just in case LACC wasn't going to work out.  We did the release party for Simply Sondheim there, and it was very reasonable - $25 per hour for use of the lobby area.  The whole deal with setup and breakdown was $150.  I spoke to the same gal I've always spoken to and was greeted with enough attitude to choke several cats - she snapped that she'd undercharged us and that there were lots more people than she thought there'd be.  Then she fumfered about the date and said she'd get back to me, which, of course, she hasn't.

So, I had to illuminate in a strong way how I didn't appreciate her tone, and, more importantly, how wrong she was.  The Colony Theatre has a rate sheet and she charged me the going rate for events in the lobby.  At no time was a limit on people discussed, and she actually never even asked, which she should have.  But, I told her from the first that we'd probably invite about 150 people, which we did.  However, only half that number actually showed up, so I'm not sure why she feels there were more than expected when, in fact, there were less - and much less.  She, of course, should know that with a certainty since we catered for 150 people and there was a ton of leftover food, which we graciously gave to her and her staff gratis.

I also brought her the kids show, which provided a nice healthy chunk of revenue.  I told her I thought her attitude was not professional and that I didn't appreciate being spoken to like I was a troublesome child.  I told her I expected to hear from her via telephone in a timely fashion, and I reiterated what the date was and what my needs were.  I also told her that if the rates had changed all she needed to do was tell me, or, if she's making the rates up as she goes along, she can tell me that, as well.  What she can't do is throw attitude in my direction.

If I haven't heard from her by end of day, she'll get one more e-mail, and that e-mail will state that I'll be talking to the owner of the theatre (who I know) and apprising her of the attitude of the person who is representing her theater.

Good Afternoon!

Well, I, too, tried to log on this morning, but the site was unaccessible - or would that have been "inaccessible".  In any case, I was not able to log on.  So, instead, I headed down to Chelsea to get my hair cut, then got some lunch (rotisserie chicken with arroz con habichuelas (rice and beans) - with plenty left over for dinner), started some laundry, etc., etc...

But it did appear the site was down for a while this morning.

And the plan for the afternoon is to take care of one or two more small loads of laundry, then pack for my trip to Memphis tomorrow.  Hopefully, none of that will take too long, and I'll be able to relax tonight in front of the TV with my roomies while we watch "Lost".

I'm glad BK is having a productive writing day.

I phoned someone in California over a taxing tax issue and actually got right through to a nice person, knowledgeable about her job, who is actually trying to help. What a pleasure to talk to a Real Person! I've been having an email dialogue with someone from another financial institution, whose replies did not answer my questions. I had the feeling she doesn't know her job well. I have now received three emails from her, each giving a different dollar amount, and am now told by the nice Julie, that none of the three were correct. At least getting through to Julie was progress. I do wish more people knew their jobs, though I admit it's largely a management issue, since they often hire inexperienced people and don't want to pay much.

As for Anything Goes...

I'm also a fan of the LuPone/McGillin Lincoln Center recording.  However, the 60's revival recording with Hal Linden gets a listen from time to time.

Oh, forgive me for not remembering which DR asked about this the other day...  The original version of Anything Goes is still available for licensing/production, as is the Lincoln Center revival.  However, the rights for the original production cost next to nothing - and after working on a production of the original version, I can see why.  ;)

The first fan letter I can remember was from Nancy Lee, when I was doing Jimmy Shine at LACC in 1970.  I do still have the letter (which came with a drawing) and we became friends and she ended up doing the logos for several of my shows, as well as the main title art for Nudie Musical.  After that, I got several fan letters from my appearance on The Merv Griffin Show in the early 70s and then tons of them from the Dinah and her New Best Friends show.

I can't really remember the first time I was recognized in public, but I know it was after the first couple of Partridge Family episodes aired.  I have always enjoyed people coming up to me.

For those who recall the Sunday meeting I attended, it was with the young woman who won the talent contest that I judged at Sterling's night club.  Part of her winning that contest was performing an act at the club.  So, she met with many recommended directors (including two of my fellow judges and myself).  She just called and told me she would like me to be the one to direct her show, and I've said yes.  It will be happening in early April.  Not much dough involved but I like her and her energy.

I started my afternoon with last night's VERONICA MARS. Good small mystery for Veronica to solve (I certainly was surprised when the guilty party was revealed) and some inching ahead on the Dean O'Dell murder case, too.

Is the dean's wife going to be making a play for Keith? She seemed overly interested in having his stick around last night.

And poor Veronica having to suffer the thoughts of Madison and her involvement with Logan. I was glad Veronica took the high road at the end of the hour.

BOSTON LEGAL had a couple of interesting cases (one concerning those religious-based "gay cure" centers) and some funny moments. Oh, lord, here we go with the Denise-is-pregnant storyline as Brad will fight for his rights as a father. All the more reason I hate to see characters who work together get involved romantically. WASHINGTON —
Hackers briefly overwhelmed at least two of the 13 computers that help manage global computer traffic Tuesday in one of the most significant attacks against the Internet since 2002.

Experts said the unusually powerful attacks, which were also noticed on three more of the 13 "root servers," lasted as long as 12 hours but passed largely unnoticed by most computer users, a testament to the resiliency of the Internet.

"There was what appears to be some form of attack during the night hours here in California and into the morning," said John Crain, chief technical officer for the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. He said the attack was continuing and so was the hunt for its origin.

Controversy Sprouts Over Prince's Super Bowl Halftime Show (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,250581,00.html)
Quote
Wednesday, February 07, 2007
 NEW YORK  —

In the sensitive post-wardrobe malfunction world, some are questioning whether a guitar was just a guitar during Prince's Super Bowl halftime show.

Prince's acclaimed performance included a guitar solo during the "Purple Rain" segment of his medley in which his shadow was projected onto a large, flowing beige sheet. As the 48-year-old rock star let rip, the silhouette cast by his figure and his guitar (shaped like the singer's symbol) had phallic connotations for some.

A number of bloggers have decried "Malfunction!" — including Sam Anderson at New York magazine's Daily Intelligencer. Daily News television critic David Bianculli called it "a rude-looking shadow show" that "looked embarrassingly rude, crude and unfortunately placed."

Anyone live near Kansas City where a Chemical Plant Exploded (http://www.comcast.net/news/national/index.jsp?cat=DOMESTIC&fn=/2007/02/07/581163.html)??  The caption on the pop-up picture says:

A huge billowing cloud of smoke shrouds the downtown skyline of Kansas City, Mo.,Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2007, as a fire burns at a chemical plant in an industrial area of the city. The explosions and fire at the Chem Central plant in the area known as the East Bottoms, just northeast of downtown, billowed smoke that could be seen for miles. (AP Photo/Cliff Schiappa)

That is wonderful! Perhaps you have discovered a new star!

DR MissKaren, I'm okay.  I'm feeling a mite puny today and it could be stress or I could be finally coming down with something.

The bill would levy a $100 fine against those who use iPods, cell phones and BlackBerrys while in a crosswalk in all of New York's major cities. WNBC reported that the ban would only be in effect in Buffalo and New York City.

Jose, in the NYC area Channel 55 on Time Warner cable runs Oprah at 7pm so if you miss the 4pm ABC/Channel 7 viewing and don't want to stay up (or TIVO/tape/DVR it) to after Jimmy Kimmel and you get Channel 55 you can watch it a little bit earlier.

...And I have to say that Todd Oldham is not an ideal host.  He sounds like he's trying to hide some other vocal affectation.  Consequently, he's sounding like a male version of Janice Dickinson.  Only with a higher voice.

While I was tallying tax receipts, I was listening to the end of last season's PROJECT RUNWAY.  That evil bitch Laura still makes my blood boil.

I'm now off to see I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change.  I have to set my VCR to tape Oprah before I go, but that'll be quick.  Until much later!

The nemonic I always taught my students about "
stationery" was that you use that word to write a letter, and letter has two "e'"s in it, so you use the "e" form of stationery to do that.

I couldn't resist it, so when I settled in for viewing, I had to put in THE HEIRESS. The new DVD has only an introduction by Robert Osborne and a trailer, but it's the film that counts, and overall it looks fine. Yep, I noticed some occasional specks and dirt, and a scratch that lasts 15-20 seconds along the right side of the frame about midway through the film. Overall, though, the movie is sharp and the mono sound is solid.

I just really love this movie, and I love it more every time I watch it.

BONES had an entertaining hour tonight and a little different since Temperence was paired with a different FBI agent this time out since Booth had to endure therapy. (His therapist was played by the always wonderful Stephen Fry.)

And it looks as if Temperence will now have a romantic interest for awhile since he and she won't be partners. So his character can be recurring and not necessarily on every week.

I watched a bit of the LOST SURVIVOR GUIDE at 9, but when I saw it was going to be highlights of what I already knew about, I put on last night's SVU episode. An offbeat episode for SVU, too, since it didn't actually involve a sex crimes case (though it appeared that way at the beginning). James Naughton was a principal guest star but more fun was seeing huge former professional wrestler Bill Goldberg toss Christopher Meloni around like he was a 98 pound weakling.

LOST - more action, more drama, more surprises, more gorgeous high definition photography. So glad it's back.

I enjoyed Juliet's backstory very much. Nice to see Robin Weigert, Nestor Carbonell (such magnetic eyes), and Zeljko Ivanek in guest star roles.

I've worked a bit on my Angela Stevens interview...I must get caught up on transcribing these many, many interviews I did this last year!!!!!

But now I feel like crashing in front of the TV and watching another Perry Mason season 1 episode. I love this show!

Of course just about everytime I watch Perry Mason I see someone in the cast who I have interviewed and whose tape I need to transcribe.  ::)

BK, have you checked out the list of celebs for the upcoming Ray Courts Hollywood show??? Quite a nice line-up with several people I would LOVE to meet!

If only I could afford to come down to LA again!

Maybe I will this summer for the June (or is it July) show....since I don't think I can afford to fly to the show (Monster Bash) in Pittsburgh that I would love to go to this summer.

However, the rights for the original production cost next to nothing - and after working on a production of the original version, I can see why.  ;)

I just placed an order to BN for the cd...
