Well, you've read the notes, the notes hopefully agreed with you, and now it is time for you to post until the disagreeable cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: VIVIFY!
-
Will we never get to page two?
-
Welcome three GUESTS. Who are you people?
-
Boys, you are just sitting there like a dead herring in the moonlight.
-
For anyone who didn't see the post - we have been purged and photos should be able to be uploaded once again.
-
I was trying to burn a CD of songs by The Manhattan Transfer and the burner froze! I stopped the burning of the CD but now the CD (that I will have to throw away) is stuck in my burner. :o I might have to restart my computer to get it out. :P
-
Well, my computer restarted, but I didn't do it! It just restarted on its own. How rude!
-
And now it's burning correctly. All is well. :)
-
Wow good TOD
I am sure there are songs from the 40's I like but don't realize that they are songs from the 40's. A little research is needed.
-
On the lighter side I see the Dixie Chicks sweep the Grammys.
They can't afford Janitors?
-
Here Goes:
When You Wish Upon A Star
Baby Mine
Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B
Chattanooga Choo Choo
The Last Time I Saw Paris (One of my top favorites)
White Christmas

They're Either Too Young or Too Old
You'll Never Know

BK:
Did you submit any of your recordings for this year's Grammy Awards?

RE: last night's GREASE YOU'RE THE ONE THAT I WANT.
I just want to say that I am really annoyed with the show for changing the voting.
It was not mentioned 2 weeks ago that there would be a sing-off between the bottom 2 Sandys and the bottom 2 Dannys.
I can just imagine that there are many people who think they made this up just because they were not happy with the audience votes.
I do think that having the audience pick the bottom 4 is a safer way to do things. And if they had wanted to do it this way (and indicated so BEFORE THE VOTING BEGAN) then i would say fine.
But to tell America that they are choosing the danny and sandy. and then have the judges vote out who they want is DISGUSTING.
Obviously Ashley A and Matt were the worst. But america voted out jason and ally. ANd that is who should have gone. IT is completely unfair and ridiculous for them to do anything else.
I mean obviously they were going to get rid of those 2. I didn't even need to see the sing-off (and i'm sure they had already made up their minds).
Thumbs down to whoever is in charge of this show.
-
Oh and re: the performances.
Laura just blew me away. I loved loved her. Last night my favorite Danny was Max.
My least favorites were jason (followed by kevin) and for the girls probably ally.
I think kate has a nice voice. But i find that her and juliana have a similar problem. They sound good. But i don't feel any real emotion from them. It feels like rehearsed emotion.

Thoughts, Prayers and Vibes to dear Larry and father and most of the family (Not the Macbeths)
-
Forgot the Grammys were on last night. I wouldn't even have watched them, but was Stephen Sondheim on the aired portion of the show? Was there a tribute of some kind?
-
DR FJL says that GREASER Austin has a dark side that would suit parts in gay musicals such as KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN and Mr William Finn's trilogy.
May I suggest that Austin play Fanny Brice in a revival of FUNNY GIRL? Or they could call it FANNY GIRL!
-
DR RLP's post made me go to the internet to look something up. He is indeed correct to call ALW - Lord Lloyd Weber.
BUT when one is merely a "Sir" - the title is used with the first name. Mr McCartney is Sir Paul, and for a time ALW was Sir Andrew.
-
Unless Wikipedia is wrong, which DR JMK will tell you it is, with regularity.
-
A journey of a thousand miles begins by putting the key in the ignition.
Confuscious - 2007 ;D
-
Awaiting the travel news from DR MBARNUM'S friends. And his reaction to JUKE BOX RHYTHM - about a princess in disguise, and the production of a Juke Box Broadway Musical.
-
So many choices for the TOD and DR MS has certainly made a worthy list.
I will second some and add some to his list.
Accentuate the Positive - Ella Mae Morse
String of Pearls & Moonlight Serenade & In the Mood - Glenn Miller
Sentimental Journey - Miss Doris Day
I Wish I Didn't Love You So - Betty Hutton
Baby It's Cold Outside - by several people
White & Have Yourself a Merry Little [Christmas]
Anything sung by Judy Garland....although my favorite song of hers would come in the next decade.
-
TOD:
I love the music of the 40's, but at the mo' all I can really think of is "Tangerine" and I'm not even sure if that was written in the 40's or 30's.
-
TOD: (okay, I thought of some...)
Tuxedo Junction -- Glenn Miller
Paper Doll -- THe Mills Brothers
I'll Get By -- Harry James
Rum And Coca Cola -- The Andrews Sisters (anything by the A Sisters, for that matter)
Stone Cold Dead In The Market -- Ella Fitzgerald

Vivify hold the faucet with these pliers and you hit it with the hammer, we'll have this shower fixed in no time!

Hello, DR Elmore. How are you doing?
-
Good morning, all! I had written a long post but lost it. My sister-in-law's computer's been recalcitrant this morning.
My dad looks awful: one eye permanently closed, the other half open and watering, gaunt, very dry and cracked skin. He fortunately still has his mental faculties and knows I am here and who we are. He still knows where personal effects are, as well.
-
DR Dan(theMan), I am okay, thanks for asking. I've sat with him and held his hand, he's aware that I'm here and he heard me tell him how much I loved him, for which he reciprocated by squuezing my hand.
My sister-in-law Jo Ann has become very close to him, taking him to and from appointments and errands, and she's a pillar of strength during all this. Randy is keeping the number of visitors down, some of whom my dad has asked not to see in his condition, and Randy refuses to let the house become a sideshow.
The weekend hospice caregiver came yesterday, stayed about an hour, and left a brochure on dying, which I read this morning. I believe his death will be relatively soon. My brother Tom came by last night and stayed about an hour, but I think he's a bit rattled over the whole procedure. I'm giving myself up to it entirely, going with the flow, trying to help as much as I can, and trying not to let Lady Macbeth's conscious attempts to turn trivia into major catastrophes. She's already stirred up one this morning.
-
Monday morning greetings! We have great weather uncertainty here in SW Ohio, with predictions varying wildly from 6-10" of snow to accumulating ice with the potential for power outages. I hope they're wrong on all accounts.
-
{{{{{{DR Elmore}}}}}}
-
My dad is starting to show an awareness of what Jo Ann believes he said were angels. Maddie, the beautiful German shepherd, sleeps on the bed beside his hospice bed and occasionally moves into his bed to lick him or nuzzle him. The other shepherd Max comes and goes.
The predicted storm has sent Jo to market, and I need to go to the post office this morning. I don't plan on doing much else besides the work I've brought with me. I will call friends in the area, including DR Ginny, but until this is over, I plan to stay close to my dad.
TOD: What a great period of song writing! I don't have the presence of mind to focus on it at the moment.
-
DR Elmore, my prayers are with you and your family. I pray that you dad's passing come quickly and painlessly. (((Elmore)))
-
Hugs and vibes and prayers for you and your dad, Larry.
-
Good morning!
We have another of those "white sky" mornings. It's not especially cold, but the total cloud cover makes it seem rather oppressive.
-
There are hundreds of songs of the 40s which I love and could write about, but the first one that came to my mind when I read that was
"Chattanooga Choo Choo" by Glenn Miller and his orchestra along with the Dorothy Dandridge version. I have that entire long version on a Glenn Miller CD, and when I come to it, I almost always put it on repeat and just play that track over and over. I LOVE that song and that elaborate rendition.
-
I'll have last night's CROSSING JORDAN along with HBO's ROME and EXTRAS to enjoy today. Don't know if I'll get to take Charlie Chan to the Olympics or not today.
-
Tonight, of course, as we're in the midst of sweeps, we've got new episodes of the CBS comedies, the NBC dramas (including HEROES) and two hours of '24.'
-
DR George, I got my shipping notice this morning from Amazon saying that A SHOCK TO THE SYSTEM had shipped this morning. Thus, I hope to have it on WEdnesday (if luck is with me) or by Friday otherwise. Very excited to get it.
-
COntinued thoughts and prayers and hugs to you DR Larry.
-
DR ELMORE,
I am so glad that you are able to post on HHW during this trying time. I know you have many friends here at HHW who care about you and who are thinking of you and welcome the updates. I have no doubt that this site gives you strength as well.
I think that you have done the most important thing: you sat down with your dad, held his hand, and told him you love him. Having been through my own father's death, I think that is the bottom line. Not everyone has the opportunity--or takes the opportunity--to do that.
My very best wishes for the coming days and weeks. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
-
Dear Lar,
I can only say what others have said. Love and good wishes to you in this difficult time. My father had similar experiences with seeing "angels" or "the light" during his last days. I, too, believe my father hung on until I returned to Minnesota from New York. I arrived on Monday and he left on Wednesday but on Monday he knew I had arrived. It was then alright for him to leave.
I hope, as DR Laura says, that your dad's passing comes quickly and painlessly.
-
Continued vibes and love to Larry, as always
-
TOD:
I'm sure I have many favorites from the '40's, but don't have a good feel for which songs were from that era.
Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B
Chattanooga Choo Choo
That Old Black Magic
Accentuate the Positive
Baby, It's Cold Outside
My Foolish Heart
Bye Bye Blackbird (1940's?)
The Birth of the Blues
Don't Get Around Much Anymore
Satin Doll
Sunny Side of the Street
Mack the Knife
My Funny Valentine (one of my all-time favorites)
Blue Moon
The Lady is a Tramp
Begin the Beguine
A Lot of Livin' To Do
Much of the Big Band music
My guess is that many of the song that Sammy Davis Jr and Frank Sinatra were singing in the '50's and '60's were actually from the '40's.
Corrections welcome!
-
The other day I mentioned the BBC production of TIPPING THE VELVET. I keep thinking about it and appreciating it even more. It's clearly not a one-timer for me. This story has depth and staying power, and it's the sort of production that catches my attention and admiration, even on the first viewing. It's one of those shows you don't hear much about, but deserves recognition. I recommend it.
-
DR SANDRA,
I was just listening to Sammy Davis Jr sing CANDYMAN, and right there in the lyrics were the words "You can even eat the dishes"! Of course I thought of you. DR FJL may have recalled these lyrics, but I'd forgotten them.
Just thought you should know. :)
-
The sun has broken through, and we now have some blue sky. I think we're in for a very pretty day!
-
As usual for Monday, I'm having lunch with best friend John, so I need to head down now and get cleaned up. He also implored me to watch EXTRAS before lunch so we could talk about it, so, hello, I must be going (a Groucho reference).
WBBL.

Also for DR SANDRA:
I, too, like saddle shoes. Several years ago I bought a pair of tan suede saddle shoes at Nordstrom. The salesman, a man I've purchased shoes from many times and know to be one of those very upbeat, could-sell-sand-in-a-desert sorts, referred to them as "homely." Homely! They are most comfortable and I like them very much.
You and I can be frumps together. :)
(I know you could never be a frump.)

Here at work, I have a lunchtime program planned for Wednesday. I've begun to receive emails and phone calls asking if we're still going to have it, what with the weather forecast. We've yet to see a drop of any kind of precipitation and the predictions are still very iffy, so how can I make a call 48 hours in advance? What I can do is be sure to have contact info for the speaker and the people who've bothered to register in advance with me when I leave work tonight.
-
JRand - Re your comments on Austin Miller :) :) :)
Of course, there are no stakes in speculating, but I do think this guy has it in him to be a real stage star if he's lucky in the roles he does. I don't think he's the greatest Danny Zuko, but he's got somthing special.
Maybe Albert in Bye Bye Birdie. (?)
-
Hehehe DRJEANNE.
-
Adding my thoughts and prayers to those already mentioned for DR ELMORE and his family.
-
CILLALIZ,
when I read your posts about your upcoming switch to a solo practice I can hear your excitement and maybe a little bit of anxiety. It's very exciting. (I'd certainly have some anxiety.) In fact, it is QUITE WONDERFUL. I love to see people have the courage to make significant changes in mid-career/mid-life. You are so positive about it; I have no doubt it will all just fall together.

One of my favorite episodes of The Lucy Show!

I enjoyed it very much! Jack Jones is quite the singer and I was very surprised to see Columbia actually use a different plot line for one of their musicals! LOL!
And I had forgotten how beautiful Jo Morrow was!
-
DR Jennifer: I respect your feelings about how the producers handled last night's elmination.
That said, however, I must reiterate my pleasure that they recognize the American public's total lack of (1) taste in music and (2) the ludicrousness of a handful of people voting hundreds of times for one person because (1) they like the way she looks in a sweater or (2) she is a fantasy date for their fervid imaginations; or, (3) they like the tightness of the guy's jeans, or (4) because he's the dreamboat fantasy man in many fervid girlish minds regardless of his inability to sing a song without hitting bad notes.
"American Idol" has had many controversial, for me, "winners" based on an assortment of gushing fangirl/fanboy votes....and these people generally don't sustain the winners beyond the last show.
I think the key thing to remember is that it doesn't matter what they "say" on the show about us looking at the next Danny and Sandy -- and then bringing back two more people -- or saying that "we" will decide the winners. The fact is, they do reserve the right to make key decisions when they are certain the public is wrong. Last night, they truly made the right decisions as both those singers were the weakest links.

Yes, I know what you mean about the advance stuff. I have cancelled plans a couple times to go to meetings in Des Moines based on predictions. I've been right most of the time. The times I was wrong, I didn't admit it ;)

Thanks Jeanne and thanks to all who have sent me best wishes. I am very excited and very positive about it. I totally believe this will work. I've been having occasional bouts of anxiety about when I need to do what, and whether my plans about finances are realistic, but I keep pushing ahead. I had been obsessing about the computer for days and days, so last night I just dove in and ordered one. Now that will be off my mind and I can relax about it.
Sometimes I think OMG this is happeneing so fast and other times I think "How can it only be mid-February? I want to do this now!" The idea that no one here at the office has a clue is also really strange to me. I'm the one who probably shares more than I should and not telling them something this big is really out of my character. It seems to be working to my advantage, so that's a good thing, but it's strange.

I had an email a week or two ago saying there is a "brown bag" with attorneys and the judges. Then in the body of the email it said..."Please RSVP so we know how many lunches to order" My understanding is that a "brown bag" means you bring your own lunch... I don't mind them buying, but am I wrong about that?

Damn! I just hit the wrong key (I'm a lousy typist) and lost a long post. It was, of course, very important!
-
I love many songs that I'm sure are from the 40s. My problem is I don't remember what song comes from what decade...well I don't confuse the 40s with the 90s, but you know what I mean. So it's hard for me to answer the TOD without doing research

My Wednesday event is a brownbag and people are expected to bring their own lunches. However, we do ask for RSVPs because we provide beverages and dessert and the guest speaker provides handouts and, in this case, trinkets from his company to, in his words, "buy the love."

It sounds to me as though they are ordering lunches for you that will come in a brown bag -- a sandwich, chips, apple. That kind of thing.

Something that the clutter pros may not tell you:
Every time I do a Massive Cull I throw out something which I later regret. I've learned to accept this. I've also learned to put things that I REALLY DON'T WANT TO LOSE in a special place. Tax douments, for instance. In fact, I like to get all my tax stuff together and in the hands of my accountant BEFORE I clean out my office. (sigh.) In fact, sometimes I'll put things in my safe deposit box just to make sure that they don't get tossed along with all the rest. (Of course, sometimes I forget that that's where they are...) DR RonP, re: GREASE YOU'RE THE ONE THAT I WANT.
I think that it would have been fair for the audience to vote for the bottom 2 and then have the judges choose who goes, BUT ONLY IF THEY HAD MADE THIS CLEAR BEFORE THE VOTING BEGAN.
Other shows like SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE do this and it actually works.
My problem is not that they chose to go this route. IT's that they advertised it as the public voting and then only mentioned this sing off thing AFTER they did not like who America voted out.
I have no idea if they planned the sing-off all along. Perhaps they did (although it seems fishy). But they should have made it clear. You don't announce the voting system after the voting has occured.
And re: AMERICAN IDOL. I like that they stand by whoever america chooses. So what if the audience on GREASE got it wrong. They would have voted those two out next week. But why even bring them back when they were the weakest? Of course the judges would vote them out. They have the least training and would need a lot of work.
It just makes me mad that the judges brought back people. America voted to keep them, and then the judges decided to get rid of them. To me the judges should have done what the public wanted. Now next week everyone will know that the bottom 2 are both not safe. So it will at least be fair. But to me this week was a sham. It really bothers me that they only announced the rules after the voting was done. Not fair at all!
Btw, i wonder if there is anyway to find out who is getting the most votes. I may check into that.

In fact, sometimes I'll put things in my safe deposit box just to make sure that they don't get tossed along with all the rest. (Of course, sometimes I forget that that's where they are...) It's very easy to throw something out by mistake.
Thanks for the info! I'll definitely make sure that I don't through away all my important papers.

DR George, I got my shipping notice this morning from Amazon saying that A SHOCK TO THE SYSTEM had shipped this morning. Thus, I hope to have it on WEdnesday (if luck is with me) or by Friday otherwise. Very excited to get it.
Cool! I wanted to compare prices between Amazon.com and Deepdiscount.com (no longer deepdiscountDVD.com or deepdiscountCD.com, they've been combined). BUT, on my home computer for this entire weekend, I couldn't get to Amazon.com! All I got was the "This page cannot be displayed" message! At work and my sister's computer, it was fine, but my home computer wouldn't allow it! I just tried and it's finally working. Anyway, Amazon.com is about $2.62 cheaper (but I have to pay tax and buy something else to get the free shipping), but, it's still less than Deepdiscount.com. It has NOW been purchased. :)

I've never purchased a CD from DeepDiscount but I've generally found that their DVD prices were lower than Amazon--sometimes much lower. But I mostly buy from Amazon because I have the deal where all two-day shipping is free. DeepDiscount is also free, but always longer than two days.

It doesn't matter to me how long it takes for me to get something, as long as I get it...so I'll almost always go for the cheaper price. Of the DVDs that I've purchased, there have been a few (very few) cases where Amazon has lower prices.
As for what used to be DeepDiscountCD.com, about half of the orders that I've placed with them were cancelled without any notification to me! I would place an order and everything would be fine, but then they would never take my money. I'd go and check on the order status and it would say "Complete"...I'd go into the specific order and everything would show $0. And that would be it. Nothing else. :P So, I rarely ever ordered from DeepDiscountCD.com, but the DVD side was great. Hopefully, now that they've combined and have a lot of other items (posters, storage, etc.) the DVDs will still be fine and the CDs will be better. :-\

That said - David Ian is still fortunate in that he seems to have more than a few contstants who could do the job.

It's not the Booze Talking: Urinals in New Mexico Deliver Message
Monday , February 12, 2007
New Mexico is taking its fight against drunken driving to men's restrooms around the state.
The state has ordered 500 talking urinal cakes that will deliver a recorded anti-DWI message to bar and restaurant patrons who make one last pit stop before getting behind the wheel.
"Hey there, big guy. Having a few drinks?" a female voice says a few seconds after an approaching male sets off a motion sensor in the device. "It's time to call a cab or ask a sober friend for a ride home."
Imagine the "Write a Jingle for the Johnny" contest!

Seriously, after years of complaining about horrible mail delivery, I learned that my area received some sort of award for superior service!!! I couldn't believe it. I will say that our standard mail carriers are pleasant and friendly, even if they do get our mail mixed up a lot.

While at UCLA, I took a class in non-western theatre. Quite interesting. As some H/Ks may know, in Bali the same themes and characters are used over and over in their shadow puppet plays. They don't look for newness; they revel in old favorites. And there's one character, whose name I don't recall, who farts whenever he gets excited. The class really made me think about western forms of entertainment, particularly TV, and what western audiences seem to expect and value.

Porn Maker in Historic Building Draws Protest
By JESSE McKINLEY
The New York Times
SAN FRANCISCO (Feb. 11) — It is hard to imagine a city prouder of its sexuality than San Francisco, a place with an active strip club district, a union for erotic dancers and an annual parade on Folsom Street where those not wearing leather and chaps are the odd ones out.
(http://cdn.news.aol.com/aolnews_photos/03/00/20070212135509990001)
So it came as something of a surprise when a kerfuffle arose because of the newest addition to the city’s sexual landscape: the State Armory and Arsenal building, a 200,000-square-foot landmark in the Mission District that was just purchased by Kink.com, an online pornography company devoted to bondage and sadomasochism.
…
But somewhere between his purchase and the first paddling, Mr. Acworth has run into strong opposition from a group of neighborhood activists who long feared that the armory, vacant since 1975, would be converted into something truly taboo: condominiums.
Some of the previous efforts to use the armory were derailed by anti-gentrification forces who wanted more affordable housing in the Mission, an economically and racially mixed area where hipsters and the homeless are represented in equal numbers.
But this time around, opponents insist they are not being prudish, just prudent, considering the building’s proximity to schools and families.
“Everybody thought it was going to be housing, and then mid-January, we get this bomb,” said Anita Correa, who runs an arts theater in the neighborhood. “Everybody was taken by shock.”
…
Mr. Acworth said he was looking to expand his fast-growing business and fell in love with the castle-like armory the moment he laid eyes on its lower levels.
“The basement had a series of rooms that looked like dungeons,” said Mr. Acworth, who bought the building from a private developer for $14.5 million. “It just has such character.”
The Kink.com plan is the latest chapter in the long and somewhat tortured history of the armory, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. Built between 1912 and 1914, the brick-and-mortar building has long been a redevelopment challenge for San Francisco, with its landmark status and the city’s famously vociferous activist set derailing plan after plan over the last three decades.
Among the possible occupants have been a nonprofit rehabilitation clinic; a mainstream film studio and sound stage; and a gym that would have taken advantage of the building’s 70-foot ceilings to install a rock-climbing wall. In 2000, a plan for a dot-com office was derailed, as was a subsequent idea to use the armory’s enclosed drill yard — itself the size of a football field — to house computer servers.
The most recent plan before Kink.com’s purchase was for a mixed-use residential and office project that would have built luxury apartments and some lower-income housing atop and alongside the existing building.
Tim Frye, a historic preservation specialist for the San Francisco Planning Department, said the architecture of the armory — small, narrow windows; no elevator; poor insulation — meant that any major conversion would most likely have been complicated by the building’s landmark status.
“It’s not a friendly building,” Mr. Frye said. “It’s really imposing, and a lot of the preservation board thinks that housing wasn’t a really good use.”

Last night's CROSSING JORDAN had two cases but only one was of real interest - a boxer who won a grudge fight was killed after the bout. The next day, his manager/trainer was also killed. A neat little mystery that took some time to sort out.
The other case involved a mother's skeleton being found in the bay, and her surviving son not wanting to have anything to do with her remains. The story could have been poignant, but it was sabotaged by the personal life shambles that Lily, Bug, and others were trying to sort through for themselves.
Josh Duhamel and Molly Sims from LAS VEGAS guest starred.

The once prestigious beach-front private club "The Pacific Coast Club, Long Beach, CA:
(http://www.longbeachheritagemuseum.com/bpac4.jpg)
The preservationists were vowed and determined to save it at all costs. The developer who owned the property went to endless meetings and agreed to all sorts of demands, including keeping virtually all the exterior and architecturally significant interior public spaces intact - all he asked was permission to do a small add-on to provide better beach access. The preservationists said no deal - it's all or nothing!
The developer was patient, the clock ran out, and the building was totally demolished and replaced by a large ugly condo tower!

Right on the mark! I suspect the writers wrongly thought the two stories would complement each other - but for that to work, both plot lines needed to pull at the same emotional threads in similar directions - instead we were bounced about. As you might say - very dissatisfying.

What is that, you may ask: It's called instead of buying new music, start listening to the 1000's of CD's you already own starting with purchases that went from the store to the shelf without even taking the shrink wrap off. It's amazing!!!! :)

The process seems to be slipping into high gear these days and we have both agreed to step up on the money saving thing. In this process, I've discovered something really cool, it's called "shopping from your shelves"!!
What is that, you may ask: It's called instead of buying new music, start listening to the 1000's of CD's you already own starting with purchases that went from the store to the shelf without even taking the shrink wrap off. It's amazing!!!! :)
Quite a few years ago (more than 12, I'd say), I used to listen to cassettes, here at work. When I'd buy a record (they were still available) or CD, I'd make a tape of it so that I could listen to it at work. I FINALLY decided to buy a portable CD player and get rid of all the cassettes of CDs that I had made (I didn't want to get rid of the LP cassettes, yet). So, I put all of my CDs back in alphabetical order (they were all over the place) and I listened to every single one in order. At that time, it took me over eight months to get through all of my CDs! That was the only time that I've done that. But it was fun...except when I had like five or six different versions of the same show and I was going to make myself listen to them in order. After the second show of multiple versions, I spaced them out with a new show in between each different version of the same show.
-
Good Afternoon!
And it really was a good afternoon (of auditions). And we had a very wonderful finish to the day too. -Details to come later.
-
Almost an hour since the last post. What, haven't the cows came home? The home fires are almost out. Speaking of which, it's really dark here in the View of Mountain, I think it may rain again.
-
DR Matthew - When I finally got all of my CDs out of storage two weeks ago - and up on the shelves - I was amazed at how many I had not yet listened to - out or still in the shrinkwrap. -And the DVDs... WOW! -I can honestly say, most of the DVDs I've bought have been for "archival" purposes as it were. I saw the movie in the theatre, I liked it, I bought the DVD when it came out... And that's been that. Most of my DVDs are still in shrinkwrap too. -And I know those pesky adhesive security strips are going to be a major pain to remove.
And then there are the books I've bought...
And the scores...
Etc., etc., etc.
*I'm seriously thinking of having a sidewalk sale of sorts come spring, and just set up a table outside my apartment and have a yard sale of sorts. And unlike some of the vendors on the streets in NYC, all my merchandise will be "legal" - and in shrinkwrap too!
-
Well...
I have an hour before callbacks start tonight, and those should only go on for about two hours tonight, so not too bad. And then since it's the final night of UPTAs, I'm sure I'll be hanging out at the hotel bar with everyone else for a while tonight.
*And I just called Northwest Airlines to inquire about flying standby tomorrow morning - something I've never done. I'm glad I called! If I had changed the reservation online, then it would have cost me $60. But if I just register for the stand-by list in the morning online(!), then I don't have to pay any extra. -And the reservation assistant said there was plenty of room on the earlier flight, so I should be able to get on it with no problem. HOO and RAY!
-
It sounds to me as though they are ordering lunches for you that will come in a brown bag -- a sandwich, chips, apple. That kind of thing.
This was close...except rather than brown bags it was white styrofoam containers
-
Well, I believe I'm going to walk around for a bit - which I need to do after sitting down for the past eight hours playing auditions. So...
Laters...

RE: GREASE YOU'RE THE ONE THAT I WANT.
Do any of you get the feeling that Juliana will NOT be Sandy? I don't think the judges like her. I mean they don't dislike her. But it's clear that most of them have their favorites. And not once have any of them chosen her as their favorites.
I have never gotten the impression she will be Sandy
-
Also for DR SANDRA:
I, too, like saddle shoes. Several years ago I bought a pair of tan suede saddle shoes at Nordstrom. The salesman, a man I've purchased shoes from many times and know to be one of those very upbeat, could-sell-sand-in-a-desert sorts, referred to them as "homely." Homely! They are most comfortable and I like them very much.
Homely?! Well, tuchus butt castle!

Another vote for The Sandra Plate Eating Show
Can you say "YouTube?"
I didn't get to eat my plate today because Kayla wouldn't eat her carrots. They were cooked so I don't really blame her.
They also had fishsticks for lunch. I was tempted to teach them the song my brother wrote yesterday, but I didn't think the teacher would understand.
-
We got our new kid today at preschool. His name is Quan and he mostly only speaks Vietnamese. But he does know some important words in English. Namely "frog" and "dinosaur."
-
Anxious Clown shirt, my Garish Pants, pink stripey socks, saddle shoes (my old ones), and a certain amount of chocolate.
-
Written my three pages, and am ready to either start a new chapter or add a coda to the one I'm in or just give these pages to my muse Margaret.
-
Still not feeling quite up to snuff, but better than this morning and yesterday evening.

DOG SHOW SPOILERS!!!!
I just read that Bill Cosby's Dandie Dinmont terrier named Harry (http://www.comcast.net/sports/others/index.jsp?cat=OTHERSPORTS&fn=/2007/02/12/585311.html&cvqh=itn_cosby) has won the best of his breed...but that's because Harry was the only Dandie Dinmount terrier entered this year. :) The article also says:
"He's also the No. 1 show dog in America, winning 57 events last year. And that makes him a top favorite at the No. 1 dog show in the country."

Oh, my, this is so funny (and accurate):
March of the Librarians (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Td922l0NoDQ)
And DH Richard and I will be part of the next biennial migration, in late June, to Washington, DC!
I still have my magnetic paper clip holder I got at the ALA in New Orleans. I spent about half of one day at the ALA & the rest of the time exploring the city.
-
Off to Pippin - we'll see how it goes.

The DP and I are seriously looking to move east (Pennsylvania) in the next 8 months or so.
What area? Keith and I spent 5 1/2 years in Bucks County. It is a beautiful state, at least what we saw of it. One of the graduate programs Craig is applying to is at Carnegie-Mellon.
-
Looks grayish outside - rain?
-
I wish Keith enjoyed watching the dog shows with me. He only looks at a few of the working dogs and always the Bernese Mountain Dog.
-
Got several little packages today so maybe the mail problem has been fixed.
I'll say. I mailed that SATURDAY!
Are the toys amusing?
-
THERE'S JUST NO PLEASING SOME PEOPLE!
Given the context, I found amusing:
The Kink.com plan is the latest chapter in the long and somewhat tortured history
a subsequent idea to use the armory’s enclosed drill yard — :o
I think the Kink could still used the drill yard.

And the scores...
Etc., etc., etc.
Oh, stop bragging!

Sandra- :D ;D

I think they thought I was bonkers, but there's so much great much there!
Jeanne, your typos are getting more interesting than Der Brucer's! ;D

I kid because I love...

A dark sky - beyond gray - really gray.

I have to go out in a few moments, but only for about ten minutes. At least one person in NY got their Brain CD - one of the ones shipped out on Friday.

I think he should be in the Terrier category. The TV show is the groups, you have to win best of breed to get into the tv show, so it really isn't a spoiler. Just a contestant tonight.
-
The terrier group is just about to start
-
There was a gorgeous Bermese Mountain Dog...I thought of Sherlock
-
I love the terriers, but don't tell the cats.

Bill Cosby's dog is a CUTIE!

I won't be up much longer tonight. If I haven't mentioned it yet, I love my brother Randy, who's 11 years younger than I. For two days now, I have watched him lift our dad and guide him from bed to chair to toilet and back, cleaning up his messes with good spirits and affection. His wife, and chef par excellence, juggles my dad's medications and comfort, the housekeeping, the dogs, and the cooking with such magnanimous soul and generosity of spirit that my heart overflows with love for both of them.
Lady M continues to stir things up, her latest being a lie about my cousin, who adores my dad, being angry at Randy for some incident at the hospital last week. I sent my cousin an email telling her Randy was sorry, and she responded that she had never told Lady M anything of the sort! Last week Lady M was spreading false stories about my dad's girlfriend Lucille, implying it was Lucille's fault that my dad's health was failing. I need a hit man ASAP.

DR Elmore - you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

DR GINNY that was a great video!!

And now I must say - IF the technology revolution had begun 40 years earlier - this would have been me at my computer in 1958:

Awaiting MR BK's words on THE HEIRESS in tomorrow's notes. I love this movie from start to finish. Saw it first when Ms Frances Farmer presented it on her afternoon television show.
-
Ginny I loved the video. I recognized the voice of the narrator... but cannot identify him... I am sure I have short animated feature that was narated by him... I shall have to investigate.
-
DR JRand - any precipitation in your neighborhood yet? The forecast here for tomorrow is gruesome.
-
DR MATTH - I purchased both MOVE OVER DARLING and CAPRICE after reading your posts about the extras. You can't have TOO MUCH Day in your day.
I use both DeepDiscount and Amazon - and if I spend $25, I get free Amazon shipping anyway....so it's usually a question of a dollar or two.
I had the same problems with DD CD, DR GEORGE.....

Ginny I loved the video. I recognized the voice of the narrator... but cannot identify him... I am sure I have short animated feature that was narated by him... I shall have to investigate.
Hi, Vixmom! I'm so glad to see you back here. Glad you and DR JRand enjoyed the video.

No precip yet....not expecting it for another hour or so..

Picture Post for MR BK.

I am being called to the next room....laters!!

MY WAY OR THE HIGHWAY!
The developer was patient, the clock ran out, and the building was totally demolished and replaced by a large ugly condo tower!
der Brucer
Yes, but people must be reasonable. I never suggested that all preservationists are sensible, pragmatic people. Now did I, dear der B?
Some years ago I was involved in a preservation battle here. There was an empty lot--a rare commodity in my area--that some developers wanted. They, of course, wanted to build on every square inch. We, the neighbors, said no. It took many months, but we did agree on a compromise in terms of scale and design. It's still larger than I think it should be and doesn't blend as well with the older --and I do mean older--houses, but I cringe when I think of what it might have been. Believe me, it could have been much worse.
I have seen new townhouses, on the other hand, that blend so well with the surrounding neighborhood that you'd have to look very close indeed to know that one is new and the other old. A good friend of mine is a builder and he could hardly believe it. He had at first assumed that the whole neighborhood was of the same vintage. It CAN be done. In my experience, the developers' priorities are profit, profit, profit. I have no number to demonstrate that sensitive development pays off, but I can tell you that some developers are welcome and well-respected in certain communities, while others are not.

Finished watching Act One of The Brain - fun to see it again! Edisaurus did a very good job with what I can tell is some problematic source material. I have a few notes, mainly in the musical numbers, but they're very simple. The sound is a whole other kettle of tuna. I'm going to have to work some magic with Vinnie, plus we'll have to sweeten the entire thing, since the audience was not miked.
-
Jeanne, your typos are getting more interesting than Der Brucer's! ;D
"There's so much great much there." Makes perfect sense to me!

Ginny I loved the video. I recognized the voice of the narrator... but cannot identify him...
It's CHER!
Oh, no...that was JRand's video.
That was hilarious!

No snow here yet. But it is on its way.
MR BK - did I send you the address of the Phoenix Theatre?
-
Finished watching Act One of The Brain - fun to see it again!
Lots of talent there! Fun to watch it at home on my nice TV!
Audio-wise I can help it a bit. You had to listen to 4 camera channels so some were folding in on themselves. And I caught a stray shot when I looked at the dub that I've already fixed. The rest is self-editing, but I will fix whatever shots I can when you send me your notes. (But it will have to be after our SMA fundraiser on Saturday.
Randy Newman sent me a copy of his guitar book for the auction. On the cover he wrote: "I tried to play guitar but never got past the "F" major chord. It hurt. Love, Randy Newman"
LOL!

That was hilarious!
Of course I mostly lip synched to Connie Francis and Gale Storm, but the result was about the same. ;D

Maybe Quan can teach everyone how to say "frog" and "dinosaur" in Vietnamese?

It is now snowing and blowing here.

We are now forecasted to get mostly rain here. Disappointing...
-
Very weird--I could have sworn that someone had posted this clip from YouTube (http://youtube.com/watch?v=7tsbNndyOLg) today (which prompted my question regarding Caterina Valente) but I can't find the original post. Maybe I linked to it from another clip. In any case, it's a fun Halloween clip featuring Miss Valente, Carol Burnett, Chita Rivera and--Boris Karloff!
-
I have an autographed photo and an email! She's still terrific! 8)
And an email! Good Heavens!

Snowing here, too. I'm off to bed and will be up early playing the are-they-going-to-close-the-library-or-am-I-going-to-sacrifice-another-vacation-day-to-the-weather game.
'night.
-
It is still snowing here. We've only hhad a couple inches but it's supposed to get worse overnight and the schools are all starting 2 hours late, so that means we start 2 hours late at work. Gotta love that. I'm supposed to take my car in for service, but I'm going to reschedule. The garage is on the other side of town and I was supposed to be there by 8:00 AM. I'll probably still be digging out at that time. I'll call them when I wake up.
-
I only have one thing I'm supposed to do tomorrow and I've already told the people involved I'll call them if the weather is bad. If I'm really lucky the schools will cancel, then we get to take the day off. Pretty goofy if you ask me, but I'm not complaining.
-
We haven't had a snow day all winter. I'm hoping we'll have one tomorrow.

I wonder if DR MBarnum has ever seen THE FLUTE OF KRISHNA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LG4J5xs60xk)? A beautiful short film from 1926.

I began my evening with last night's HBO presentation of ROME. We're at the point iun history where Octavius and Antony have made a truce so they can band together to fight Brutus and Cassius who outnumber them pretty severely. Love to see the story told from another perspective, and, of course, the fictionazed characters of Vorenus and Pullo are so gorgeous that they ALWAYS draw my attention.
-
I think you're the first person I know of who remembers Gale Storm.
You haven't been here long enough to remember our discussions of MY LITTLE MARGIE and OH, SUSANNAH, Gale's two wildly popular sitcoms, but we've talked about her at length in years past.
-
We're supposed to have mucho rain tomorrow.

I had about half an hour before prime time began, so I pulled season three of WILL & GRACE off the shelf and played a fun episode - the one where Grace withholds sex from Josh (who promptly dumps her) and Will dates Charlie (with a charming Scottish brogue) and then Charlie doesn't call him back making Will think he was a bad date.
Really enjoyed seeing this entertaining show when it was in its rpime.
-
'24' featured two hours that were just about the most compelling action adventure that could be possibly be imagined. I was on the edge of my seat for much of the hour with one amazing surprise and thrilling sequence after another. Really two great episodes tonight.

HEROES -
oh, that sneaky Sylar is getting more and more powerful and dangerous. I think we can guess who's going to die next week.
I was so mad that Hiro and Ando fell for that charlatan or that Claire didn't see that her birth mother was primarily wanting money. Simply love Matt.
No Peter Petrelli this week! Wow!
-
I also had time to squeeze in tonight's episode of THE CLASS. FUnny, poignant, and romantic - this show has improved leagues from earlier in the season. Alas, I fear it's too late as far as CBS is concerned.

Back from callbacks... Back from the bar - just one Bud Light... And now I need to pack up my luggage - which will be easy - so I just have to wake up, shower, and get on the shuttle bus to the airport in the morning.
Otherwise...

~~~Tonsil and Headache Vibes for DR DakotaCelt!!~~~
I had my tonsils removed when I was 26 years old. What happened was I got strep throat and was given antibiotics for 10 days. Right after I stopped taking the antibiotics, it came back. They gave me another round of meds for 2 weeks, but two days after those were finished, it came back, again. Then, they gave me a third round for a full month! That finally took care of it. Because I got strep throat three times within six months, they said that the tonsilectomy would be covered by my health insurance.
-
Before I had gotten them out, people would tell me horror stories of "friends of friends" who'd gotten tonsils out as adults. Mine were taken out on a Tuesday at about 11:30am. I was awake by 1:00pm and home by 3:00. I had almost no trouble with the surgery. The only real problem was on that Friday, I went to a restaurant and ordered nachos. :o
I DO NOT recommend eating nachos that soon after having one's tonsils removed. ::)
-
They didn't have nachos when I had my tonsils removed. In fact, I can't remember the first time I actually heard the word nachos or where I first noticed they were on a menu.
-
Perhaps someone can provide a history of the nacho.
-
I guess we never will get to page twelve, since the new notes are ready and going up in three minutes.
-
Can one get to page twelve in three minutes?
-
No, but I can post "PAGE TWELVE IN THREE MINUTES." Does that count? ;)
-
Well, since George is just sitting there like so much fish, I'd have to make fourteen posts in two minutes.
-
I don't have that much to say, frankly.
-
We're cookin' with gas now.
-
Only about twelve to go.
-
I can say that dear reader Laura's fudge has been disappearing at an alarming rate.
-
According to THIS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nachos) wikipedia article:
Nachos in their simplest form are usually tortilla chips covered in melted cheese. First created in 1943 by Ignacio "Nacho" Anaya, Anaya's original nachos consisted of fried tortilla chips covered with melted cheese and jalapeño peppers.
Another traditional variation consists of a quartered tostada topped with a layer of refried beans and/or various meats and a layer of shredded cheese.
Common additional toppings include:
Ground beef or chicken
Jalapeño pepper slices
Other spicey or mild peppers
Onions
Salsa
Guacamole
Refried beans
Sour cream
-
I'm quite tired, but my tummy is still annoying me so I'm not quite ready for bed. One minute to notes.
-
I don't like Jalapeño pepper slices or guacamole on my nachos.
-
I guess we'll get close to page twelve but no ceegar.
-
But I love sour cream. :D
-
I know what nachos are - what is their history?
-
There are only four more posts (after this one) to get to Page 12.
-
Their history is a mystery.
-
You make them whilst I post the notes.
-
History
Nachos were created in Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico, according to a story reported in several newspapers and confirmed by the Oxford English Dictionary, as well as in episode #10.14 of the television program Good Eats.
In 1943 twelve wives of American airmen stopped in the restaurant owned by Rudolfo De Los Santos. The chef was gone, but the Ignacio "Nacho" Anaya quickly made a snack from what he could find in the kitchen. He melted some Wisconsin cheese on top of fried tortilla pieces. One of the women, Mimam Finan, named the dish the grammatically incorrect "Nacho's Especiales".
When Anaya later worked for the Moderno restaurant he served the dish there.
The Oxford English Dictionary has identified the earliest known occurrence in English-language print of the word "nacho", in a cookbook called "A Taste of Texas", edited by Jane Trahey, published in 1949. "A Taste of Texas" refers to the story of Ignacio Anaya as the inventor of nachos.
The nacho history was also from the wikipedia article.
