Well, you've read the first notes of the New Year (if you haven't and you don't then you are taking a chance that a pox will befall you), so you know the routine.  To it, I say.

Happy New Year to you all as I make my first post of 2004. We leave London later today (boo hoo) and return to New York City. It will be culture shock after 16 days of English accents and pleasant people and an unlimited tube pass, to return to New York City. Ah, well, it must be done.

Enjoy your day my friends.

Happy New Year to all the Dear Readers.

We just got back from our sparkling (a word we haven't used here recently) soup-tasting party. This is the night that DR Sandra loves above all others -- the night we all play games and she really comes out of her shell. We played Cranium and Catch Phrase, and we all went out at midnight and shouted "Fresh Fish!" Then we toasted the New Year with sparkling apple juice.

Bang!*

Good morning!

What a lovely and amazing number of posts from last night - I will catch up on them when I get back up to Fairfax later today.  *I'm currently back home in Richmond on my roomie's computer, so...

I just wanted to check in and say HI!  And wish everyone a great 2004!  I had a lovely New Year's Eve with Steve - and theatre people can be so fun and funny sometimes!  :D

*Bang.. hmm.. I think I just heard two of them outside... I hope they were just a car backfiring or something like that... No sirens in the air, so...  I'm OK - just interesting...

Later.

And the problem I face is that I've got many here that I'm sure would have qualified, but I didn't have time to watch them in 2003 like LA STRADA, ONE TWO THREE, TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE, YANKEE DOODLE DANDY, FIREFLY.

Happy New Year Morning all!

Thank you for the compliments on my doggies, MBarnum.  The big boy sitting up is Bear and the one laying down is Brandi.

I have to tell those with pets that get upset with fireworks/thunder/loud noise, I was talking with a lady at the local dog park about how upset Bear gets at New Years and the 4th of July.  She told me to try something called Rescue Remedy that you get at your local health food store.  It's all natural.  Humans use it at times of stress but she said it worked wonders for her dog.

I  bought a bottle and gave Bear 6 drops last night in a Vienna Sausage (I always keep a can of those on hand for pill giving) and he handled the fireworks like a champ!  I couldn't believe it.  He growled a few times but stayed laying down instead of racing around the house like a mad dog.

He's up this morning with no seeming ill effects either.  He's at my feet as I type this,  chewing on a few Milk Bones.  I can now highly recommend Rescue Remedy.  I may have to try it myself the next time I feel stressed.  Maybe it would help when I have to do a presentation at work.

Sorry I didn't mean to go on and on about this but when I find something helpful, I like to pass it along.

I'm so glad we all made it thought the night with no problems.  I was in bed shortly after ten as I thought I would be.  I woke at about 8 minutes after midnight with all the loud bangs around here.  Bear was peacefully asleep at the time so I turned over and went back to sleep myself.

Well, I have a Rose Parade to watch.  Have a good first day all!  We'll be having the traditional pork/Sauerkraut and mashed potatoes for News Years Day dinner.   I think that’s a German thing.  Here in the South I know most have black-eye beans and ham hocks but I’ve never tried that.  What do ya’ll have?

AFAIC, the past year was a banner year for films/television/concerts on dvd, so many choice, so little time.

My Favorite DVD releases of 2003:

1. FINDING NEMO
2. THE INDIANA JONES CHRONICLES
3.  SLEEPING BEAUTY
4.  Warner's COLE PORTER COLLECTION:  KISS ME, KATE, LES GIRLS, SILK STOCKINGS and BROADWAY MELODY
5. THE BEGINNING OF THE END
6.  HELLO, DOLLY!
7.  MGM'S "gay" series:  THE SUM OF US, BENT, JEFFREY, IT'S MY PARTY
8.  BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER SEASON FIVE
9.  ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST
10.  CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG

RUNNERS UP:
11.  PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN
12. KINO'S American Film Theater Series, most notably JACQUES BREL IS ALIVE AND WELL AND LIVING IN PARIS
13. ELAINE STRITCH AT LIBERTY
14.  WEST SIDE STORY (double disc; did anyone else realize that the single disc with the white label is PAN AND SCAN! ! !? ? ?)
15.  A MIGHTY WIND
16.  Paramount's Peter Bogdonavich series: DAISY MILLER, TARGETS, PAPER MOON.

also rans:
THE LION KING
MGM's Double Feature Discs which included (finally) THE VAMPIRE LOVERS and LADY DRACULA
THE BILLY WILDER COLLECTION featuring the new to dvd AVANTI, PRIVATE LIFE OF SHERLOCK HOLMES, KISS ME STUPID and ONE TWO THREE.
THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE
SWEET CHARITY
BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN LIVE IN BARCELONA
OKLAHOMA! (London Cast)
X-MEN 2
SCROOGE
PRETTY BABY

DVD disappointments:
THE BARBRA STREISAND COLLECTION - although the films look and sound magnificent, the so-called Streisand commentaries bite the big one.
DIE ANOTHER DAY - or, the dumbing down of Bond even further than when Roger Moore was starring.

Best dvd trend of 2003:
the Walmart $5.88 bin

Happy New Year!

I have a hot pot of coffee awaiting me.  It's cold and raining here today.  Raining dreadfully!  Raining mercilessly!  Raining on our parade and preventing us from parading around with our roses!  It's the rain of all rains, thus far -- probably the rainiest rain we have had in a couple of years.  And it's supposed to rain ALL DAY!

I have delusions today (oh! yes! I HAVE delusions!) of going out to see LOTR:TROTK!  But, alas, this "r-a-i-n" has also afflicted me with fetal-position-itis!  And it's not pretty.  But it IS comfy!  And the house is warm and I have a fireplace and firelogs aplenty.

I'm totally jiggy with most of the DVD choices others have listed....including Michael Shayne's mention of the superbit "Lawrence of Arabia" which blew me away more than virtually any other DVD film presentation of the year.  "Finding Nemo," "Sleeping Beauty," "LOTR: The Two Towers" are all at the top of my list, too!

My fingers want me to start typing more lists, but my mind is listless, I tell you...totally listless this morning.

Have a wonderful, joyous, DRY day my warm, wonderful, funny friends. (Oh!  Uh--oh!  I had a flashback to my yout...long may it remain a pleasant memory!  It had to do with the song "I'm in the Mood For Love" -- which I'm not, by the way.  And it went, "I'm in the mood for love, simply because you're near me.  Funny butt....funny butt?  Funny Butt!  You've got the cutest little funny butt!"   I guess you had to be there and then!).

DR Jason:  Thank you so much for the photos from Broadway!  I appreciate the one of the Gershwin very much!

Adieu til later.

Auguri!

(And to the karma-taker who started my New Year off by booing me: I GIVE it to you gladly because I think you need it MUCH more than I! You helped me resolve to continue being outspoken in this forum.  Thank you!!!)

A good 2004 morning to all! I'm doing my first day of the new year house cleaning today. Late last night I sent out a mass e-mailing to many people (but sent each individually, copying the text) wishing them "a happy, healthy, prosperous, fulfilling 2204!"
And I hadn't even had a drink...
Got back several responses this morning saying that, although the wish was a fine one, they didn't think they'd make it quite that far.

That would have given me a laugh, too, but I didn't get said e-mail.

I'm didn't really fall asleep until four - had so many things running around in my head.  So, I just awoke and am ready to relax and smell the roses or the coffee or the Diet Coke or whatever needs smelling.

And it wouldn't be a New Year unless I began it with: Where in tarnation IS everyone?  We mustn't have a New Low on the New Year.

Well, woke up this first day of 2004 to lots and lots more snow, about 5 inches it looks like. Guess that will keep me home and off the streets today! LOL! Fortunately I have a 4 day weekend! Should get lots of DVD watching done today as well as some writing projects.

Hope everyone's first day of the new year is starting out grand! I want to hear all about JRand53's partay in the big city!

Happy New Year!  Did everyone watch the Rose Parade?  It runs through the heart of my home town and concludes only about a mile from my house.  Of course, I watch it on TV.  No sense in dealing with chilly overcast weather and crowds when the best views are right on TV!

Good morning everyone from warm but very wet Hawaii!
Luckily it was dry last night so we were able to go down to the beach and watch the fireworks.  That was fun.  But this morning we awoke to torrential amounts of rain.  No beach today, I guess.
I'll post more later when I'm fully awake...

Jay's List of Best Films of 2003:

Mystic River
The Station Agent
Lost In Translation
The Triplets of Belleville
Big Fish
Pieces of April
House of Sand and Fog
In America
21 Grams
Km. 0
Elephant
L'Auberge Espagnole

I am not the first to note that 2003 was a terrific year for documentaries.  Here's my list of the best ones I saw last year:

Winged Migration
Spellbound
Capturing the Friedmans
The Fog of War
Amandla!
Lost in LaMancha

(I'm not sure if the first two on this list qualify as 2003 or 2002 movies, but I saw them in 2003.)

In 2003, I also saw the worst film I've ever seen.  Not the worst of 2003, the worst ever.  What really puzzles me is that this picture shows up on the top ten list by one of the L.A. Times' film critics.  It was made in Portugal, and its name, so you can avoid it, is O, Fantasma.

Worst American film, hands down, was Girls Will Be Girls.

I haven't watched the Rose Parade in ages, but I do stop and smell the roses and occasionally a parade whenever I have time.

With all the mounted units (don't even go there, Dear Reader TCB) in this parade, I am confident it was a most fragrant event.  Maybe that's why they use so many flowers.  To mask the scent.

bk - how right you are.  I love beaches in the rain.  Water is water, after all, so you end up getting wet either way.  But my dear best friend, who was born and raised here in Hawaii, somehow got it into her head that unless she is able to lie on the sand in the bright sun, it's not a beach-worthy day.  I, being a good guest, go along with it.

I would add to my best DVDs the You Bet Your Life set, the funniest thing I've seen all year.  Also, my region 2 DVD of La Dolce Vita, the first time this film has ever been presented on home video correctly, and in a gorgeous transfer to boot.  Oh, and The Swimmer - who would have ever thought we'd see this on DVD, let alone looking so good.

Jason thank you for the wonderful photos!   Having been parents on the receiving end of similar calls, Keith and I want to know if your parents understood a word of what you said last night.  LOL

MBarnum you got snow and Portland got snow but all we got was rain.  So much for the weather forecast of snow all night.

Jay, Keith and I along with friends, including Penny (yes?) whom I notice is on board this morning, went to the parade.  Keith & I did this several years in a row.  I don’t remember if Penny went more than once.  Of course we were very young at the time.  This morning I recorded the parade and if I have time will watch it later.

Danise fortunately Echo is great with storms and fireworks.  :)  If not I would certainly try the rescue remedy.  I know what a pain a dog that is fearful can be.  We had a Samoyed once that always informed us when a storm was approaching.  Summers in the east were very difficult on her.

Jane: Yes, they understood it. My dad sounded like he'd been sleeping (what little bit I could hear when he was speaking to me.) I'd like to think that he was just sleeping and not in the middle of something unseemly, considering my parents had the house to themselves last night. We won't go there any further. I felt like 1) they should know that I was out having a good time and I was totally sober (I rang in the New Year with a bottle of Aquafina. I don't drink, but for some reason, even at the age of 27, I feel like I have to prove to them that I'm not out getting sloshed...I'm weird like that) and 2) I wanted them to know where I was just in case something happened, which I really wasn't expecting, but I wanted to take that precaution just in case. From the sound of it, they really couldn't have cared less, so...I dunno.

I'm glad you liked the pictures. I posted one especially for TCB and he's not said a darn word about it. That's gratitude for ya! ;)

I may post a few more today, but not as many as last night.

I wish I could settle in and watch DVDs, but I'm picking a friend up at the airport at 3:00 today, and then we're going to have a Chinese dinner. Tonight, DVDs for sure! I put in NORTH BY NORTHWEST finally today, and was simply astounded by the clarity, depth, and rich color. It's obvious I need to rewatch every DVD I own on this TV set to understand how truly wonderful DVDs and how great this set is!

A couple of DVDs for me to add: Hitchcock's NOTORIOUS and SPELLBOUND (Criterion editions).

I’m sitting here chuckling.  I’m sure your parents were very pleased you called and appreciated the Aquafina.  I know we would.  I expect our Portland child is sleeping and we won’t know how our other son fared until he returns from Budapest to Romania.

Thanks for the new pictures. :)

I had 10-ish friends over last night (I say 10-ish because people were coming and going...the average at one time was 10), and I think we finally decided to retire at 5. And we were woken at 8:45 to run out and get donuts. I need at least 4 hours of sleep to be fully functional, and it's not working at the moment.

I don't really have any "Favorite 2003 DVD releases", because I almost never watch our DVD's anyway. The one movie I adore is Pirates of the Caribbean, but it's obviously not one of the best movies of the year. Thoroughly entertaining.

Yes, MBarnum, I haz returned from my crazily hectic life. Thanks to everyone for your "welcome back's". I still don't like that picture of Laura and I, I look like a 10 year old with a mouth full 'o metal. Eh. I am sophisticated and glamourous and ravishing now, I look nothing like a 10 year old. Hah.

I'm so glad that the Golddigger Girls (and Jason) had a good time in NYC! ANd I'm glad WICKED was to your liking. Sooomeday, I will be able to come on these trip-type-things.

I spent almost $400 on clothing and shoes yesterday. I now have a new coat, 3 new outfits, and 2 new pairs of shoes. I have gotten my MAMMA MIA outfit that ma mere made me buy. I must say, it is wonderful. A hot pink dress shirt with tiny plum stripes all over it, and flowy black pants, with leather mary jane's for le footwear. I shall be the belle of DC, :).

Jose, will you be there on January 18th?

The hotel depicted in the photograph above (post 52) is, I believe, the stupidest building ever built in New York.  A total embarrassment that might possibly not look out of place in Miami, but here it's a roll-your-eyes, scratch-your-head, ask "What were they THINKING?" eyesore.  It violates every principle of good design.  *shudder*

DR Jane - Your son spent new Year's eve in Budapest? Bet he had a good time. I do miss being among Hungarians. It's strange to leave your homeland when you're young. Sort of like shedding one skin and putting on another. When I'm with Hungarians (Hungarians I like, that is) I feel different. More at home in my skin. In Boulder, one of my best friends was a Hungarian musician. She combined two of my favorite things in the world - Music and Magyar.

I know how you feel about pictures.  I don't like the one Keith posted of me.  How about you post picture you do like of yourself, one that shows off your more sophisticated look.  It is certainly a look I have never been able to master.  Maybe you can give me some tips.

I felt that way just leaving California and moving around the east coast. LOL

Bruce, I am absolutely fascinated by THE SWIMMER and sort of stop and watch it anytime I happen to catch it on.  Oddly enough, I don't ever recall catching it from the beginning.

Last night the lovely wife and I watched a wonderful production of THE SEAGULL with Frank Langella, Blythe Danner, Lee Grant, and Kevin McCarthy.  Then saw the new year in with the South Park Marathon going on the Comedy Channel, with a quick slip over to Dick Clark and the Ball-dropping.  Did I actually see Dick Clark kissing the never-seen Mrs. Clark last night?

All this because I never could find Guy Lombardo last night!

Today I shall loll around like so much fish.

DR Danise: My female dog "Fosca" is very prone to thunderstorm anxiety. I shall try the "Rescue Remedy" on her next time. Our VET has given us valium for her and then suggests we take it if it doesn't work on the dog! RR is advertised on the radio here so I must check it out. I guess I could make Fosca a good cup of chamile tea as well. I assume some dogs are mores sensitive to changes in air pressure and can detect storms and high winds hours before they eventuate. Our male dog "Magnus" only thinks about food.

Great News about the Kritzer Time cover, Bruce!

After I went to sleep last night, I woke up.  And you know what?  It was raining.  It was snowing yesterday and now it's raining.  AND I have to go to Seattle to visit my ex-boyfriend (the long distance didn't make for a good relationship).  Anyway, we're still friends, so that's good.

As for my top DVDs of the year.  I'm not limiting it to just 10...so here are my top favorites (that I actually own):

1776
Chicago
Far From Heaven
Finding Nemo
Futurama (the complete first season)
Futurama (the complete second season)
Kiss Me, Kate (with the WSMA Brent Barrett)
The Lord of the Rings:  The Two Towers Extended Edition
Scrooge
Soap (the complete first season)
Thoroughly Modern Millie (the movie)
What's Up, Doc?
Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

Those are my 12 favorite DVDs that I got this year.

Now, off to Seattle (with a stop at Krispy Kreme).  Have a good day, everyone!!

They're remaking The Swimmer?  A thirty-five year old box-office disaster that happens to be an almost perfect film?  Why indeed.  Hollywood is truly truly bankrupt and I don't know that it will ever recover from its current malaise.

Bruce, why don't you have a small sandwich and a small side of...something small. BIG is not what you want to be thinking, nor is fast food. Eat in as much as you can.

YOU CAN DO IT BRUCE! I have faith in you that you can achieve your goals. Don't give up now, you're THIS much closer to making it! Think about how good it will feel to feel better about yourSELF.

This has been a pumped up message from Swishy.

Ron: The flowy black pants could also be called Swishy black pants, but Swishy was SO last season. Pants that are baggy throughout, yet tailored, are le look. They must f-l-o-o-o-o-o-w, thus the basis of the term "flowy pants". This does not apply to jeans. Baggy jeans should be outlawed. Slightly loose jeans on guys is fine, but when you can't see their feet, there is a problem. The same goes for too tight, men and women. On men, unless you are sex-on-toast, I PROMISE it doesn't look good. On women, it doesn't look good, period. Jeans should not look like they have been painted on.

See what I do with a simple word? I turn it into a rant. I should work on that.

Um, I think that's a bit of a broad generalization, Dear BK.  True, when things like this year's The Cat in the Hat make it to the screen, one shakes one's head and worries, indeed.  Occasionally, genuinely good work does make its way out of the Hollywood miasma.  (Mystic River is a good example of that in the year just past.)  And, thankfully, there are those independent filmmakers who defy the odds and manage to get their films, often of very high quality, into distribution.  (True, often it is very narrow distribution, but the films do get out there.)

Along those lines, the dichotomy between studio films (made strictly for commercial gain) and independent films (driven by an artistic animus) seems to be growing.  I assume your comments refer to the studio machine.

Yes, mostly studios, although independent films are not what they used to be either - just too slick and polished and obvious calling cards.  I'm being general, of course - there are exceptions both studio and independent-wise.  I like matzoh balls but I'm not in the mood for soup.  I might get a turkey san from Jerry's or I might go to the Subway (very low fat gram count there for many sandwiches) - I'm going out now and will come back with some edible or other.

Since I'm about a day or so behind (as usual), my hope for 2004 is that it will be better than 2003.   2003 had some wonderful and exhilirating moments in it; it also had a lot of lows (and very low lows, at that---more so than most years).    Was 2003 better than  2002?  Was 2002 better than 2001?  Come to think of it, the fact that I've survived the last 5 years or so is amazing.  Luckily, I'm an optimistic person (or at least part of me is).

Hollywood bankrupt? I've suspected as much with the remakes recently of PSYCHO and THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE. How and why perfect films need any kind of remake or rethinking is beyond my feeble brain. All I know is I won't be seeing them (and I say that even though I love Meryl Streep, but I will not sit through a remake of THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE which I have a perfect version of it here that I can see any time on DVD.)

RESCUE REMEDY is the way to go!
Our Minx is deathly afraid of storms, fireworks, gunshots (except she love the opening 20 minutes of SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, as she'll curl up along the front row of speakers and stare into the center one while it's on), but a friend in Wisconsin got her the RESCUE REMEDY.  Ever since her first dose, she has become very docile and nonchalant whenever storms are brewing, fireworks are a-flaring and hunters are being stupid.
Run, don't walk, to your nearest apothecary and get the dog some RESCUE REMEDY!

If the swishy look is out and the baggy look is in, will you now be known as BaggySarah? It just don't have the same ring to it!

Here is my list of favorite 2003 DVD releases:
THE DESPERATE HOURS (1955 version)
BORN FREE
SONG OF BERNADETTE
HOUSE OF WAX/MYSTERY OF THE WAX MUSEUM
THE SADIST (this cheapo movie really surprised me in    how really good it is!)
YOU BET YOUR LIFE: the lost episodes
ATTACK OF THE CRAB MONSTERS (the pic quality on this release was not too hot, but I love the movie so I was satisfied)
UP IN THE AIR

There were many other releases from 2003 that I have yet to purchase so I did not include them on my list.

Tom, I hope that Rescue Remedy works as good for your dog, Fosca, as it did for Bear.

I had never heard about it before talking to that lady at the dog park.   It's rather expensive--I don't pretend to know the money exchange but it was $15.99 for 20 ml here.

My vet also gave me some pills for Bear that don't work.  He'd still run around barking his head off.

Like your other dog, Magnus,  nothing bothers Brandi except not being fed.  I rarely mention her because she doesn't do anything.  Bear is Mr. Personality.

Poor Brandi, I got her at an animal shelter and they told me she had been badly abused.  At first, she didn’t  want anything to do with any of us.  I just left her to herself and after a few years (yes, it took at least 2), she started to want to lay at my feet and then she  started barking in a protective way, like she finely said this is MY house too and I want to guard it.

Bear is my Walmart special.

Tuna salad.  Ugh.  Chicken salad.  Yum.

We just finished our dinner.  Good luck for the year is now assured.  Whoopie!

Nice picture Jane, is that your backyard? I wonder if you are on my brother Allen's Fed Ex route? He does Ashland, mostly the countryside. He loves it because he is a real country boy!

I like the snow today, but tomorrow will be a different story as I need to do my grocery shopping and buy some stamps to mail my bills...which means driving in the snow, which I hate!

Now if I were still a kid, I would be having a blast! My cat Freddy is enjoying romping around in the snow, but it almost buries him as it is pretty deep!

Danise, you have never seen the snow in real life? I cannot believe this! It really is beautiful!

Great new pic, Matt!

Lovely photo, Jane.

To sound more up from my previous posts, I shall describe (in honor of Jose) my dinner last night.  We went to a lovely little place a few blocks from our house.  Great food, and the chef hugs us everytime we come in--- that sort of place.

I had a lovely pate witha wonderful spicy mustard sauce on the side, cornichons (of course).  I wish I could remember the herbs, but it was all delightful (and the leftovers of which made a very nice lunch).

I had one of the specials which was halibut sauteed in a ginger sauce with mushrooms and served over bok choy.

For dessert, a lovely Grand Marnier crême brulée.

It was a leisurely early dinner with DRMusicGuy and a dear friend visiting from Illinois.

So, is this more positive than the grim posts of mine from earlier? :-\

Has anyone ever played a game called Speed Scrabble??  I'm not sure, since this family claims to have invented it.  The way it works is, the tiles are spread in the middle of the table, and every player starts with 7, like usual.  When the game starts, every played flips over his or her letters and makes a mini-scrabble board, connecting as many words as they can until all 7 tiles are used.  The first person to finish yells "Tile!"  and everyone has to pick another tile from the center, and make another complete word set...this continues until no more tiles are left.  The first person to finish wins.  It's actually a really fun game!  Doesn't work well with less than 3 players, though...

Nope, MBarnum, never seen it.  I even missed it the one time it sorta snowed here in Tampa.  I had a really bad cold and took some medicine that had me out cold.

All I have is a vage memory of my Mom trying to wake me up.  "It's SNOWING!" she said and I'm like, "Errrrrr.  Sssnnnooowww.  ZZZZZZ. " snore and went back to sleep.

By the time I woke up, it was all gone and I was mad as wet hen.  "Why didn't you WAKE me UP!?!".  "I  tried but YOU wouldn't get UP!".  The story of my life.  What can I say?  Sigh.

Kerry, that's why I let her choose her own time to come to me.  I didn't push. She's laying to right of me at this moment and Bear is the the left.  I feel well protected.

Hello one and all, all and one.  I had a delightfully delightful New Year's Eve last night with a group of my theatre friends.  One of them is a dance teacher, so we hold the party in her dance studio, and all works quite well.  Lots of fun conversation, various snack foods, a couple games of Scattergories, and then some sledding on the hill across the street from the dance studio just after midnight.  Hopefully my friend, Ken, will get me a picture soon for me to post.

Slept until 1pm today (was up till 4), and am now partaking of the "I Love the 80s" marathon on VH1 (which I did last January 1st, as well).  Only 2 inches of snow here today.  We had 13 on New Years Day last year, so I won't complain one bit about this today!

Thanks to Jason and Jane for the wonderful pictures!

Whew!!!  :o

So many posts and wonderful pictures from yesterday and today.  Thanks DRJASON, I asked for the Music Box and Phantom!  Appreciate the time you took to take and post the photo...and all the great theatre marquees!  When I am in New York, or any BIG city I always take a picture of the theatre!

DR Jane I am not sure if my parents were Myrna Loy fans or not.  They wanted a five-letter girl's name that ended in "a" to go with Paula....  Of course by the time Molly came along all that planning had gone to H-E- double Hockey Sticks!  And thanks for the picture of the snow.....it is going to be 56 degrees here tomorrow - so hopefully we will have an unseasonable weekend.

DRMATTH nice new picture - and I really like the pic of your brother and you and your doggie.

The party was tres jolie...tres tres jolie...but I was sorry to miss all the fun here at HHW.

I will scan and post some pictures of pets this weekend!

But I do have one last thing to say:

I love all the family names....thanks for sharing.

I just returned from a week in Bayfield, Ontario. It was a good break. I got some work done, took long walks with Archie the spaniel, and recharged my batteries. Bayfield is a quiet village on Lake Huron, not too far from Stratford (Stratford Festival). It's lively though not touristy in the summer, and sleepy in the winter.

I returned to at least 1,200 HHW posts, and the big decision was whether to start at the beginning or the end. Being a Libra, I'm alternating between the old and the new, working my way down to the middle.

Happy belated birthday DR Maya - and best wishes for a great year.

DR Jason - I loved the Broadway pictures.

And all other DRs - thanks for the schmoozes and the laughter.

A little laundry, a little dinner, and I'll be back.

Lovely lists.  Man, I haven't seen Auntie Mame in a 'coon's age.  I bought the DVD when it came out, then just never got around to it, other than checking the transfer.  It's a lovely film, gorgeous transfer, and Miss Russell is captivating, as is the rest of the cast.  You can see how Jerry Herman just went through the play and picked the places for the musical numbers - no thought even required, they're all built in.

Happy New Year to you, too, Noel. Sorry for offending your eyes with such an eyesore.

Today turned out to be a day for appreciating good 21st Century architecture, as we went to downtown L.A. to get up close and personal with Disney Hall and the Cathedral.  The former is quite sexy (hope to see the inside someday).  The latter deals with a puzzle that's long fascinated me: How can you build something that conveys a sense of holyness while using modern architectural means?  That Cathedral doesn't succeed in many ways, but, in some, it does.  And, some years ago, you wouldn't have expected me to refer to anything built in Los Angeles as anything other than an eyesore.

Happy New Year.  And happy new architecture!

The second MUSICAL COMEDY TONIGHT was the one Danny Kaye was featured on doing his famous song from LADY IN THE DARK (and Lynn Redgrave doing the Gertrude Lawrence "Saga of Jenny" as I recall). It didn't go over as well as the first one had, so she took a totally different tack for the third one, and it was the weakest of all.

Still, any special the celebrates musical comedy in all its glory can't be all bad.

After I finished NORTH BY NORTHWEST tonight (and the "making of" documentary on the DVD), I pulled off the To-Watch shelf a DVD I bought a couple of years ago and hadn't watched since I saw it at the theater: AI: ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE. I had a mixed reaction to the movie in the theater feeling much of it was strong and emotionally involving but that the last third seemed unfocused, meandering, and less involving. But I'm looking forward to seeing the whole thing again (I watched about 25 minutes tonight) and maybe gainging a new perspective on it after a few years.

Sometimes I do see films differently after a second, third, or fourth viewing. I'm hoping this second look will make me admire the film more. I think there is much there to admire if I can only ferret it out for myself.

It is quite likely that A.I. features prominently in my favorite films of the past decade; it never fails to move me to tears AND cause me to think.
Tomovoz, my memory is a blur; did YOU also find A.I. to be a heart-rending experience?
As an adopted child, I found the first third of the film to be quite true to life in capturing the pre-adolescent feelings of an adoptee, brought to nighmarish life when "mother" does leave her "son" in the forest to fend for himself.

I've also watched the expanded editions of "LOTR:FOTR" and "LOTR:TTT" preparatory to my going to see "LOTR:TROTK" in the next couple of days.

I got (for me) the CD issue of LORELEI:  A Musical Comedy Based on GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES with Carol Channing.

And also for me:  "EVERYONE HAS A STORY: The Songs of Adryan Russ" produced by our very own BK!  Those are what will be in my CD player tomorrow (except for the birthday present CD for my niece).  I can't wait to listen to it...actually I'm not.  I'm going to listen to it right now!

As for the cathedral, I must vehemently disagree with you, Dear Reader Noel.  It is an eyesore, as far as I am concerned.  It is a forbidding fortress from the outside, its plaza is a completely uninviting hardscape, and the interior is chilly, at best.

For those of you Dear Readers who have not seen the cathedral, there are some photographs of it in this website:  http://www.olacathedral.org/index.html (http://www.olacathedral.org/index.html)

I'm not sure where you think we're vehemently disagreeing, Jay.  I said that the Cathedral succeeds in some ways and fails in others.  The altar, for instance, is inviting: people feel free to roam under that stunning cross that extends from the window panes.  The color of the building is a very pleasant contrast with the ugly court complex across the street.  And, on the plaza, I find it most amusing that through the windows with the etched angels, you can see the freeway.  (This blocks out the noise, as well.)  These are ways in which it succeeds.

It fails in many other ways.  The way it doesn't meet the street at all, but rather meets its parking garage.  Why does the architect want us to enter those huge hallways, from the wrong side, so that, when we first glimpse the nave, it's from an odd angle?  And the windows with the louvers are indeed ugly from the outside.  Today we didn't go downstairs into the scary maze that is the crypt.

SO many architecture and church terms, my head is now swimming.  And so to bed.

I despise AI!  I think it emphasizes all Spielberg's negative excesses to the worst degree...treacly false emotionalism, rank sentimentality, a disturbing, distorted view of childhood innocence, fuzzy cuddlies, a borrowing of themes and fawning over other films and just a movie that is simply not psychologically true, given what it sets up and initially presents.  A.I made my skin crawl.  I want to take a bath after I saw it.  It is an utterly false, empty movie!  His worst since that homo-erotic paean to a nauseating notion of childhood, HOOK!  Spielberg's best movie is still Close Encounters of the Third Kind

Carlos".  My mom's reasoning being that all the other boys with Spanish names were named Jose.  -Well, the other boys with Spanish names were named Carlos!  I finally rebelled in sixth grade, and started going by my given name, Jose.  The whole "J. Carlos" thing also confused me when it came time to fill out test forms - especially when you had to fill in all those little circles.  *And I could never spell out my "middle" name, since they usually only provided one box/circle for your middle initial.

Did I mention that I also find A.I. just ponderous and pretentious and far too long to justify the slight, shallow emotional depth that it posesses.  What a heaping pile of manure.  I think it would have been just as bad in Kubrick's hands, by the by.  Well, maybe...not quite as bad...we probably would have been spared all the overwrought, twee sentimental clap-trap.

And speaking of ponderous and pretentious, Jay, I agree with you regards Cardinal Mahoney's edifice to his ego.  A totally unnecessary expense and structure.  Money that would have been better spent  paying damages to all the people abused by the priests that Mahoney has covered up for over the years.  I think he should be arrested as an accessory after-the-fact and for obstructing justice all these years.

The worst part of the Mahoney's monument to himself is that the space it occupies used to be the best place to park when going to the Music Center.

How to spend New Year's Eve?  With someone?  With a lot of someones?  Or by yourself?

It comes and goes with me.  I'm usually playing a show on New Year's Eve, and just end up hanging out at the theatre with everyone - like last night.  Although, I do sometimes just like going home, watching Dick Clark, and then heading to bed shortly after midnight.

Last night's party was fun.  However, I did feel a little "out of it" with some of the crowd that was there - even though I knew almost every one that was there.  I was a bit tired after the show.  Steve had a good time, and we stayed by each other's side for most of the evening.  We just kind of stayed "quiet".  It was nice.  And the drive back to Richmond was very uneventful on 95 - thankfully - and we did a lot of catching up and planning for our trip to NYC.  *Will it be the Coconut Layer Cake from Magnolia Bakery and/or the Monkey Cake from Amy's Bread? ;)

Oh, the spread of food last night was quite the spread.  And a lot of it was low-carb-ish, so...  However, I did allow myself a slice of the heavenly dark chocolate chambord flourless torte.  YUM!  Oh, and a small sliver of cheesecake too.  *I took a nice LONG walk this morning as "compensation" - and it was a beautiful day in Richmond too!

As for The Top Ten DVDs...

Hmm...

I've bought a couple of the ones that other DRs have mentioned...

However, I haven't watched any of them.  Maybe this year. ;)

DR Jay - I, too, loved L'Auberge Espagnole!  Is it on DVD yet by chance?

I am home and am just about as exhausted as I have ever been in my entire life!

Happy New Year everyone!

The Goldiggers' Trip was much fun! I saw WICKED (with Maya) and GYPSY (with Andrea and my friend Robin) both of which kicked serious bootay.

Robin took the picture of the Hainsies outside of Ollie's... so I will blame her for the fact that she successfully managed to make me look like the three hundred pound man I was trying to prove I wasn't! It's time for an avatar switch before the flirting stops forever! ;)

Off to bed am I... to dream of witches and have nightmares of my mother turning into Mama Rose...  :o

DR Jason - Thanks for all the NYC pics!  I'm soooo looking forward to getting back up to the city in just two weeks!!!!!  OH - Do you know if you're working the evening of Friday, the 16th?  I'll check with you "personally" too.

I did one New Year's Eve in Times Square a couple of years ago... wow, more than 10 I guess at this point.  I was with some friends who came in from California.  We somehow ended up catching a late showing of The Prince of Tides.  I still remember someone in the theatre whispering, "Happy New Year", at midnight... and other people started to follow suit, then we all returned to watching the movie.  Once we got back outside, it was a little scary actually... Lots of trash on the ground... Lots of broken glass!  And the cops weren't letting anyone through the Times Square area unless they had a hotel key on them.  So we ended up walking up a bunch of blocks to catch the subway back downtown.  Of course, once we got there, the tokens we had bought earlier that day didn't work - the new fares/tokens took effect at midnight - Happy New Year... Not!

BUT... New Year's Day was actually very nice in the city.  And I couldn't believe how all the mess in Times Square was cleaned up by morning.   And my friend, Mark, managed to snag a prime mezzanine seat for Miss Saigon - the original cast was still in - that day - the day of the show.  Seeing that show was the only thing he truly wanted to do in New York that visit.. mission accomplished.

And to all the Golddiggers - So glad to hear you all a great time.  Of course, I'm assuming Emily and Andrea had a great time too - eagerly awaiting their posts!

I also think Close Encounters is Mr. Spielberg's best.  But I like AI - can't help it.  And that is what makes the horse racing.

I am here! Good time was had by all and I adored meeting the other girls (although Ollie's wasn't great for a long lingered conversation and I wasn't able to head out bar hopping with the girls because Robin wasn't too keen on it (I ended up walking around central park with Robin and-- of all people-- CYGOPP (Whom Maya and LC have now met)). Will post tomorrow about the trip-- my version. We will then compare and contrast with Emily's

DR Matthew - So glad to hear you had a great time in NYC!  I was going to try to squeeze in seeing TBFO myself - to see Mr. Jackman - but just no room in the schedule this time round.  And that's great that you ended up with house seats.  I sometimes just take my chances and just wait... House seats are usually released at half-hour if they aren't claimed by someone with the production.  *A dear friend of mine got in trouble at the Kennedy Center once for figuring out their "system" - we were waiting in line, but it still wasn't half-hour before the show.  We kept letting people go ahead of us.  One of the box office ladies motioned to my friend to ask what the problem was... He told her that he was told that the house seats are released at half-hour.  Well, this upset her a little bit.  No one was supposed to know that.  Well, we got back in line and let a few more people go ahead of us.  A few minutes later, she motioned us to her window again... and gave us the house seats.  Fifth row center for the opening night of the first national tour of Les Miserables.  *Of course, we ran into some friends afterwards who had ordered tickets months in advance... and all they could get were second balcony!  Oh, and this happened at the Sondheim Celebration last summer too.  There were some really lucky people in the Stand-By/Cancellation line... They would walk up, and find themselves in prime seats.

Oh, and one time in NYC, I hit TKTS at 7:55.... And ended up with house seats!  -Can't remember the show, but it did happen!  And, yes, I ran like mad to the theatre!
