Well, you've read the notes, the notes were perky, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently having a cowniption fit.

Bring out those partay hats, because I will indeed be able to make it to the CD release partay tomorrow night!  I managed to have them push the time I needed to be at the club back by a bit, so I can make my appearance to honor The Brain.

Sweet dreams to all of you little Hainsies and Kimlets!  See you on the other side of the morning...

Good morning, all!  DR Cason, get to bed!

I had weird dreams all night long:
    1. I was working at Barnes & Noble
    2. I was working at the library
    3. I was escorting various performers during these jobs to a cabaret festival on board some ship in the Hudson and this kept making me late to work
    4. There were problems in the deli over my order
    5. Liza Minnelli kept calling me and asking questions about how my day was going.  At one point, I believe I asked, who is this really?
So, Liza kept pestering me and I woke up thinking, what the hell did I do to deserve this?

I just checked my bank account, and my payment arrived safely, so I have no financial problems returning to NYC. Yay!

DR Jose, have you heard the Hugh Dancey gossip from his last movie set?  I'm jealous that you saw JOURNEY'S END.

Today, I have several errands to run, including photocopying Kevin spirtas' charts and mailing them to him.  I need to purchase a luggage strap since the one for my suit bag seems to have disappeared between LaGuardia and here.

TOD:  my biggest conniption fits have occurred during recordings for our dear friend BK.  Several still have me embarassed, but a few don't.  I also threw a real hissy (what if it doesn't fit?) on BABES IN TOYLAND in Houston, a little oasis of power in a desert of nothing.  There were too many cooks, and everyone would have killed you for your job since they wanted it and told the world how poorly you were doing it.  Houston Grand Opera was one of the worst places to work. Ever.

Little girl got into an argument with her teacher.  Teacher said whale had a big mouth but because of a small throat, could NOT swallow a man.  Little girl said, whale swallowed Jonah.   Teach said impossible.

Little Girl:  Well when I get to heaven I will ask Jonah.

Teacher:  What if Jonah went to hell?

Little Girl:  Then you can ask him.

I read JOURNEY'S END in high school, and since then it has been one of my favorite plays.  And yes, the ending is sombre and true....and inevitable, and all the more so because you have gotten to know these men.

We must have the Hugh Dancey movie set gossip, DR ELMORE.

In fairness, I should add that the conductor for HGO at the time, John DeMain, is one of the finest artists I've ever worked with and , outside the cast, he was my favorite collaborator.  As for several others, the less said the better; it was the proverbial den of vipers, jealousy, and resentment.

Hmmmm.....I throw those fits now and then.

I guess my last one was in a store, where after long deliberation, I chose a CD Shelf System, only to be told, it was NOT in stock.  I asked where was the sign that said "Not In Stock" and was told - "We just ran out."  I asked if I was permitted to buy the display model and was told no.  I asked where was the sign that told me that.  They didn't have one.  I ranted a bit wanting to know WHY there was no OUT OF STOCK sign.  The girl finally said:  "Oh my this is my first day, I don't know....."  And I had heard the other person in the department (who NEVER came out from behind the counter) say:  "We've been out of those for a month."

After a bit of a fit, I finally said:  "PLEASE put an 'out of stock' sign on that system."

Went to another place, found another system, but had to sit and listen to a salesman try to sell me a two year extended warranty when all I wanted to do was take my item and leave.  Finally after trying to kindly deflect him, I said:  "You know this is a birthday present for my sister who has [insert sickness here) and she is only going to live another six months.  I don't want the warranty."

He just said....oh.....and I left....with my CD player.

Ah - the theatah!!   8)

Yes, but usually it isn't so blatantly open!  The HGO production in 1991 was evil incarnate, a model for MEAN GIRLS:
   1. the assistant director claimed he'd been promised the director's job (never true) and kept trying to sabotage him with the choreographer's help
   2. the dramaturg, who took credit for everything, knocked everyone;'s work claiming he could do it better, kissing your butt while looking for a place to stick the knife
   3. the casting director, who claimed to be Joyce  (the lady we wanted for the Widow Piper) Castle's friend, kept pushing an apprentice for the role and gave Joyce's agent the wrong dates to keep her from the role
   4. if you had lunch with the wrong group, you were dead.

Interestingly, BABES is one of the productions that never gets mentioned in any HGO publicity!

Although it hasn't been publicly announced, word on the street is that Footlight is closing completely. The brick and mortar store is gone and at some point the Web site will be closing as well. There was a long discussion (and confirmation of the fact from two reliable sources) about the closing on CastRecL (a listserv devoted to musical theatre and film music).

I've thrown a couple of angry fits in public but I prefer to put them behind me and not talk about them any longer.

Conniption Fits - if you ask the people I work with, they will probably say that I have had many. Of course any show of emotion around here is considered unbalanced, so I wouldn't put much stock in what they say.

I have had a few from time to time, sometimes intentional sometimes not.

Thursday morning greetings!  No freezing fog this morning and I started my day at a different branch bank that was not in the midst of a robbery.  We've already had the paramedics here this morning to take away one of our homeless "regulars."

TOD - Just day before yesterday, I had my version of a conniption fit when I stood seething outside the room where my program was delayed about 20 minutes while:

1)  The custodial staff set up the furniture in a not-very-close approximation of the way I wanted it (and have requested it twice a month for the the past 4 years)

2)  The IT and Training staffs cobbled together a computer projection system to replace the permanent set-up in that room that worked fine until they decided to "upgrade" it for the new year.

They all knew, when I wasn't in the room good-naturedly pitching to help, that I was peeved.

I have never misbehaved or thrown a fit in public- ever- I think that is a record for children everywhere.

Once at home though, when I was 3 or 4, I became quite angry and I threw myself against the wall so hard that I had a concussion. Sadly no one remembers why....

DR Cillaliz - I hope you don't have the kinds of difficulties getting to NYC next week that you had last fall!

Ah, but we both made it on different planes from different airports in time to meet at the airport, check in and get to the theater, so it wasn't so bad.

Plus on the way home I did voluntarily get bumped, thus the free airfare for this trip.  I'll be looking for that opportunity on the way home this time, as well.  I think I've gotten 3 or 4 free tickets in the last couple years.  I now plan extra time on the way home to allow for a voluntary bump.  My only criteria is that it's on the way home and I don't have to spend the night.

I don't think I'll have a problem. It looks like this end will be the worst and it probably won't be too bad, it's jus the early morning still below freezing with precip I worry about.  I may go to Omaha Wednesday night so I'm there in the morning rather than risking a drive in  the dreaded "Wintry Mix".

I threw a few hissy fits at teachers' meetings, especially as I neared retirement and had nothing to lose. When decisions would be made that were impractical, ludicrous, or damaging to the educational process, I let my feelings be known. I know my principal was very glad to see me retire at the end.

Some networks are ducking for cover tonight and airing reruns opposite AMERICAN IDOL's first results show. The CW is rerunning episodes of SMALLVILLE and SUPERNATURAL. (SMALLVILLE is the really good one concerning the formation of the Justice League), and UGLY BETTY takes a week off as well. (ABC is rerunning last week's GREY'S ANATOMY at 8 to lead into the new episode at 9.

As far as I can tell, CBS and NBC are airing new episodes of their line-ups.

DR Dan (the Man):

Yes, it's true. THREE SMART GIRLS was the salvation of Universal Studios in the mid-30s. It made Deanna Durbin an instant star and launched her on her career with the studio from 1936-1948. It was also nominated for Best Picture, though it lost to THE GREAT ZIEGFELD.

Good Morning to all...........this is just a quick "Hi Y'all"  to start off the day.  I have a number of errands to accomplish today, so I'll get started.

As to the TOD :  I'm ashamed to say that I've thrown too many. I'm not proud of them, and they leave me feeling crappy and (of course) have very little effect on the other person.  So I really try to make a conscious effort now to "THINK" before my 45 caliber mouth goes off.

Re: last night's AMERICAN IDOL.

There was actually only one performance that i loved and that was lakisha.  I thought she was outstanding.

Another person who I do like is melinda.  But compared to lakisha i thought she was just very good.

I suspect tonight one of the girls who we don't really know will go home: either amy, leslie, nicole or haley.

I think antonella will be safe even though she was quite bad. I personally do not like her. Her backstory really irriated me (well not her story per se, but rather watching it play out).

I also find jordan (the 16-17 yr old) grating.  I actually think alaina seems sweet (but was not good last night). And i can see why people think stephanie (first girl with short hair) and sabrina were good. They just didn't impress me they way lakisha did.

It's funny that the judges said the women outdid the men.  Perhaps the few good performances (and lakisha's great one) made them forget. But they pretty much hated most of the girls.

I stil like blake and phil and the 2 chris.  They weren't as good as lakisha. But i can definitely see some combination of them with melinda and lakisha in the final 4.

As for the Topic of the Day...

Actually, this came up last night...  A couple of years ago in DC - well, more like 10 (is that still a "couple") - I used to play rehearsals for one of the Gilbert & Sullivan groups in town, The Washington Savoyards.  -Heck, if DR elmore can mention HGO, I can mention The Washington Savoyards.  -And, thankfully, due to various administrative and artistic staff changes, the Savoyards are a much better group all around nowadays.  In any case... Back to me...

Rehearsals at that time were sort of loosely run for various reasons.  One of the main reasons was that the group followed the traditional stagings of the G&S operettas, and since most of the members were diehard G&Sers, the staging rehearsals would tend to go "fast".  However, this familiarity with the material coupled with a strangely long(!) rehearsal period would end up turning the rehearsals into little more than social hours.  Very loud, chatty, laugh-filled social hours.  Well...

I was not their full-time pianist - and not really a G&S fan to begin with - so whenever I came in, I came to work, to play piano.  And to pick up a surprisingly nice paycheck.  But still, if I endured the rush hour traffic on the Washington Beltway, I at least wanted to do what I was hired for.

There was one rehearsal where I realized that I had not played a note for about 15 minutes... then 20... then 25... then...

"WILL YOU ALL SHUT THE F*CK UP AND REHEARSE!!!!!!!"

-Yes, I used the F-word.

And after a moment of stunned silence from everyone in the hall, the musical director came over to the piano, and started the rehearsal.

*And some people actually Thanked me for doing what I did.

(to be continued)

I actually liked the show.  I was glad to get to see kate/sawyer and also get to see what was happening with Jack and the others. I was a bit disappointed that kate/sawyer never got back to the island though. They really dragged that out.

I was okay seeing jack's backstory. Although i would rather get to see the backstory of different people. I really enjoyed seeing juliet's last week.

I like seeing jack interact with juliet and ben. I am very curious to see where they are going.  And i liked seeing alex get involved. And it was also interesting to see cindy the stewardess and some of the children.

Needless to say, it was one of those very slow burn situations in regards to my temper, my outburst.  I had played a few rehearsals for the group before, so they knew me and liked me.  They had just never "heard" me before.  Well, they did that night.  And like I said, a couple of people thanked me for doing what I did.  And I was asked to play for them again after that evening.

Alas, some of the biggest conniption fits I've had have involved my parents.  It's been years since my parents and I have had a fight of any sort, but there was one doozy of a fight where I "said" something to my father which I still regret at times today.  Live and learn.

That sounds like quite a responsibility, DR Jane.

I’m very nervous and I really need to begin reading it.  Once I begin I want to read straight through the manuscript without many breaks.  This isn’t something I can read under the covers with a flashlight. :)

The author has included a list of questions to help him with the next draft, and to make it easier for me to give my honest opinions.  He said to let him know if I don’t like the book & want to stop reading it, which will also be helpful to him.  I sincerely doubt I won’t be able to read the entire manuscript.

...Otherwise, I tend to have a high threshold for dealing with sh*t.  -Just ask the cast of What If? ::)  It takes a lot for me to get visibly and audibly angry.  I guess "This too shall pass" has always been ingrained in me.  I usually just walk it off - literally - or sleep it off - literally.  And I guess I used to "eat it off" too.

And there have been situations where I guess I could have gotten angry, but, instead I was hurt and saddened.  In those situations, I call DR elmore.  ;)

Now onto more important matters...  "American Idol"!

Once I got home last night, I went ahead and watched the show courtesy of the DVR.  So...

1) Boy have they sold a ton of commercial time!  I couldn't believe how long I would down the fast-forward button at times.

2) I liked Lakisha a lot too.  However, I thought "the note" was good, but not as good as it could have been.  Additionally, the cut/edit of that song was horrible!

3) I, too, want to see Antonella go home.  Ugh!

However, I guess it's 'cool' that each contestant is judged on their performance for that week/challenge, rather than on past highs and lows.  I think.

I like the show last night as well.  And what I really liked was the Thai girl Jack met in his flashback.  WOW!  Was she a looker or what!  Whoever does the casting for this show is incredible.  The people they find--even for the smallest roles--are always spot dead-on.  I also liked Isabel ("The Sheriff").  I'm sure there will be future conflicts between her and Jack.

I wonder if they will ever bring back the mysterious Miss Clugh?

Although it hasn't been publicly announced, word on the street is that Footlight is closing completely. The brick and mortar store is gone and at some point the Web site will be closing as well. There was a long discussion (and confirmation of the fact from two reliable sources) about the closing on CastRecL (a listserv devoted to musical theatre and film music).

I've thrown a couple of angry fits in public but I prefer to put them behind me and not talk about them any longer.

Well, I hope this isn't true - they are one of my best customers, and have just placed a Brain reorder - given the number of times they reorder titles I'd think they were doing okay.

Conniption/Hissy Fits:  Can't think of a more pertinent forum to discuss this!

I am, in many ways, like BK in my total disgust for incompetence where customer service should be a number one priority.  I base this observation on the many occasions when BK has reported situations in this forum of such incompetence.

I also appreciate "the other side" of the situation. There are folks out there who provide the customer service as well as it can be provided and they put up with quite a bit in customer "dullwittedness", customer "ignorance", and customer "disregard" for proper behavior, etc.

I cannot tell you how much it makes me seethe to read about, or see TV shows/movies in which, people buy articles of clothing to wear one time and then take them back.  That's THEFT!

Ditto folks who make a smorgasbord of fruits and cookies and candies while they are shopping.  Items should not be consumed until AFTER they are paid for.  I have seen empty bags of cookies left lying on a shelf.

I generally recognize competence/professionalism, so I'm not talking about THOSE customer service representatives when I say we are currently besieged with far too many (possibly) well-intentioned but woefully underskilled, undereducated individuals who make a mockery of "service" in almost all respects.

I am not a fan of customer service representatives who also have telephones to answer.  I have stood in lines for more than 15 minutes -- and sometimes more than 30 minutes -- awaiting my turn to get something done, only to become first in line and then be interrupted by the service rep answering the telephone and giving that call -- and the caller's need -- priority over me.

I have not stood idly by and taken it, either.  I have directly addressed the rep after such a call and told him/her in no uncertain terms that the phone can either ring, or the caller can be told to hold.  I have been ignored and found it necessary to disconnect the incoming call with an index finger, much to the annoyance of the service rep.  I have always insisted that they call their supervisors should there be any confusion as to what I expected during "my turn" in line.

There are individuals out there who cannot, literally, walk and chew gum at the same time.  Many grocery checkout clerks can check you out, talk on the phone, make change for another clerk AND have someone do a price check without missing a beat.

They are rare...few and far between...and almost always in a line different from the one I'm in.  I get the one who seems seriously focused on what he/she is doing, and then someone asks a question and the eyes glaze over, the checkout ceases and it's moments before the clerk can reorient himself/herself to the task at hand.

What I truly hate more than anything is the persistent customer service rep who accosts you the moment you walk into a store.  Any time I actually have a question for one of them, they invariably don't know and have to find someone else, instructing me to "Wait here".  I've waited and waited and waited.  And then left.

Of course, if I'd just bought a new house and learned that lovely trees were then cut down to put up condos, like DR EDISAURUS just experienced, I think I would be seething mightily. Yes, I might very well have some sort of fit at that!

Well, that was a 2 year slow and agonizing conniption fit before they built those 5 story condos behind what was going to be our dream house. I did have a fit when I first learned of the plans and the evil scumbag who was the developer.

As for where we are living now---I had a big conniption fit in that very backyard about 4-5 years ago. It was the only time my DH had seen me really angry. I was so mad I was shaking. Here's what happened:

A local slumlord owned the acres of woods behind the house we have been living in. (I've been in this house for 27 years.) The woods had been home to vagrants and loads of trash. Instead of cleaning up these lots, after the slumlord got enough code violations, every few years he would bring a big bushhog out to the woods and mow down everything but the huge trees. There were gigantic specimen trees there, 5-6 ft wide oaks, etc. (Now they have been felled.) This wouldn't clean up the trash, it would just chop it up and cover it over. I looked into the slumlord's records and he had hundreds of code violations on about 60-70 rental properties.

The slumlord hired his landraper to clear out the woods one day, and told him to clear from the telephone pole to the house. But he didn't say WHICH house! So while we were at work, this guy totally moved down my huge curtains of porcelain berry vines, destroyed hundreds of daylilys that I had brought down from my grandfather's house in Ohio, and all the things we planted to encourage birds to visit us. They also cut down every tree under 6" in width.

Since I worked until after dark, I didn't realize this had happened until the next morning. I always have breakfast standing at my kitchen counter taking bird inventory. I looked out and it looked like a tornado had hit...there was nothing left but the big trees...all the vegetation was gone!

I saw some men down in the woods, so I went running down there. It was the slumlord and his land raper. They only clear half of my 1/2 acre yard because he'd had a flat tire, thank god. I was very angry, but I could have dealt with it if this slumlord had been the least bit apologetic. Instead, he said, "You should thank me. You got all your "weeds" cleared out for free"! These weeds were plants we had specifically chosen and hand planted as part of our backyard habitat. I told him that he had destroyed all my day lily beds, and he said "Oh, I mow over mine all the time and they come back. No big deal".

At this point I think I really could have strangled this guy--good thing my DH showed up. I had an arborist come out to asses the damages and he estimated the "cost of cure" at $10,000 to replant everything I'd lost. I started a lawsuit with him but my lawyer, who was doing this for free, dropped the ball. But now I'm tempted to try and go after some compensation, because if my tangle and trees were still there I wouldn't even be able to see the acres that were clear-cut, and the future condo owners wouldn't be able to see my house.

I'm not stressing out too much about the new clearcutting for the 3 story condos because we will be leaving this house soon and moving into Atlanta, but it sure doesn't make it appealing for anyone else to live there in the future.

Well... I'm just wondering what the audience "need" to this show will be like - even if the reviews turn out to be a "producer's dream".  With everything going on in the world today, I'm not sure how "popular" this play will be.  -Heck, I'm starting to tear up again just thinking about it...  But that's art.

Well, I suspect the stuff that you'd like is the stuff that they can't really perform on TV.  And the staging for the number they did on "The View" was very modified from the way it's presented on the stage of the O'Neill.

Then again, even though I liked the show, it's definitely not everyone's cup of tea.

It's funny that the judges said the women outdid the men.  Perhaps the few good performances (and lakisha's great one) made them forget. But they pretty much hated most of the girls.

That's not the show I saw.  The show I saw had the judges praising far more of the girls than the guys.  Maybe not Simon....but the girls were more memorable.

I honestly didn't think much of any of the guys, including Blake, whose limited vocal range won't get him very far, IMO.

Mr. Stacey is the man, but even his song choice stank.

The women are rich and varied and were far more upbeat in their song choices.  I thought some were better than the judges assessed them.

I couldn't believe a few of the songs some of the girls sang...just totally "nothing" there in terms of melody or line or anything that could be "delivered" with conviction.  The Bonnie Raitt song was a piece of s**t.  I'm stunned she even published it.

I'm hard-pressed to guess who might be going home tonight.

Oh, I would definitely be seething! I've had some dealings with developers myself and my opinion of them is not high.

A nondeveloper story: My house in San Diego was on a flag lot and I had gone to some trouble to landscape the area along the long driveway up to the house.  But apparently many people there thought of my long drive as an "easement," and therefore public. An easement was in fact granted to the utility company to place telephone polls there, but it was NOT public property. When the house at the bottom of the hill (bottom of my driveway) was sold, the new owners mowed the landscaped area along my driveway, assuming it was part of their property. Like Edi's developer, they were quite blase when I explained that it wasn't theirs to change. I think this is one of those classic "It's easier to get forgiveness than permission" situations. They knew it wasn't likely that I'd go to the expense and trouble of relandscaping--so they got their way. I sold the property not long after. Lesson learned: common areas are always a problem. It's best to have clearly defined property lines. It may seem like overkill, but it's best in the long run.

I am curious to see this other island where the Others live.  They have showed us glimpses of the houses. Wasn't it like a real neighborhood. That should be interesting.

I think the judges complained about: amy, leslie, antonella, jordan, nicole, haley, alaina, and gina. I guess you're right though that paula did say a few good things about some of them. And randy did like gina. But since simon didn't like 8 of them, to me that was a similar number to the guys. Although overall i suppose the girls did better.

It's hard to say who will go. I would say any of: amy, leslie, nicole, haley or alaina. I personally don't really care if any of them go (nor do i care if antonella or jordan or gina go).

For the guys i think any of: rudy, paul kim, nick, jared or aj could go. And i don't care which go.

The only people i want to stay are: blake, phil the 2 guys named chris, lakisha, and melinda.  With my favorites being blake and lakisha.

Apparently they did a little thing on The View today re: american idol. And elisabeth went crazy over blake.

The "judges" had criticisms for/about everyone.  Well, maybe except for Melinda and LaKisha.  That seems what they think their job is now, to "keep it real".  I think they're just sort of admitting that:

1) They and/or the producers and/or the pre-judges should have made better choices in the preliminary rounds.

and

2) The public really does have the say, so...  Why not be mean, since people will vote for their favorites, regardless.  *You know Antonella's circle probably has some sort of texting "ambush" set up.   ::)

I share DR RONPULLIAM's and BK's frustration with poor customer service. There is no question that customer service in general is much worse than it used to be. However, I see it as partly a management problem--hiring people with little or no experience, poor pay and working conditions, lax supervision. I find that many of the supervisors have low standards and fail to see why a customer would be dissatisfied. I once told a particularly stupid customer service person that I would call back and talk to the computer, because it at least wouldn't be rude. I really think that many people in customer service positions have no idea what constitutes courteous behavior. That, too, is partly down to management: more training is in order.

I now limit my shopping whenever possible to stores/organizations where I've had good experiences, even if it sometimes means paying a bit more. Of course, sometimes you have no choice.

A general "rule" is, I think,  that people who are working in unsatisfying jobs really don't care about providing service, just keeping themselves from being blamed for anything, and just want to get through their 35-40 hours with a  minimum of stress and discomfort.    This must apply to customer service people as well.  If someone comes at them guns blazing, for something that is their company's or a co-worker's fault and not their own fault, they are likely to respond in a way that gets either the cusotmer or the frustration off their back.   I don't think they as a rule give a rat's ass about anything but not jeopardizing their own paychecks.

Agreed.

Steve banks with Bank of America, and he has a particular type of account that charges a service fee if he goes into a branch and has actual personal contact with a teller.  He does all his banking via ATM and online.  "Customer service" is a non-issue, in a sense. :-\

When I lived in Richmond, I loved shopping at Ukrop's, the local chain in town.  Yes, I could have saved a few pennies by going across the street to Kroger, but I always loved the way the store and it's employees made me feel.  There was no greeter - everyone you came upon always said, "Hi.".  And if a clerk happened to notice you wandering up and down an aisle, you'd eventually here, "May I help you find something?"  -And there were always cookie and cake samples at the bakery counter too!

I've told this story before, but... There was one time when my groceries had finished ringing up and I noticed that I had left my wallet at my apartment.  "Oh, that's OK.  Just come back tomorrow with your payment.  Since you had your UVC card with you, we have a record of this transaction."  Well... I drove back to the apartment, unloaded my groceries, then drove back to the store with my wallet in hand.  "Oh, Thank You! But it really would have been OK if you had come back tomorrow."

Yes, some people have criticized the store owners religious beliefs - they were closed on Sunday and did not sell alcohol (but that's what 7-11 was for anyway) - but I truly did - and do when I can - enjoy shopping there.

Gibson...who cares anymore?  Just because he has 12 kids or so, though, doesn't quell persistent rumors of his relationship with his "Gallipoli" co-star.

I closed my mom's checking account at BofA, and then later I received a statement showing a balance of minus 19.97. Turns out whoever closed the account erred, the account got three cents interest, then was charged $20 for not having the minimum amount necessary for a checking account.

I did not actually pitch a fit, but I did insist on a manager crediting the $20, closing the account correctly, and writing me a cashier's check for three cents.

I certainly loved last night's MEDIUM. And this makes three episodes in a row that Patricia Arquette was given Emmy-worthy scenes of real drama and emotion. I think when she was passed over for an Emmy nomination last year after winning the year before, the writers are making sure that she has really dramatic stuff to deal with this year, and she's really rising to the occasion.

I was riveted during this entire episode, and the future scenes she was seeing with Marie were beyond disturbing and depressing.

Again, the Alice Faye DVDs didn't come today, so I went to the to-watch shelf and picked KHARTOUM, a movie I have never seen before. I watched about 30 minutes of it and was interested in it, so I'll look forward to finishing it between now and tomorrow.

But the MGM transfer, as good as it looked in terms of color and sharpness, was NOT Ultra Panavision. And you could tell that with the sides shaved off to lessen the letterbox, people near the edges of the frame were cut in half or cut out completely.

The Stereo Surround sounded fine, but a totally repurposed 5.1 track probably would have been better.

I will try and post some photos of Sherlock in the snow later.  I forgot to take the camera on our hike-a shame as it was just beautiful this morning.

One tiara - $5,000

One pair of black men's briefs - $2.00 (well, 6 for $9.00)

An unforgettable night out in the East Village - Priceless

Do the black men know you have their briefs?

I bet DR Cillaliz has a few briefs laying about her office!

OK...

Breathe...

Two boxes sorted and shelved and/or purged.

Breathe...

That's a start.  A good start.

When I moved everything up here a few weeks ago - well,  even way before I moved everything up here a few weeks ago - I told myself just to take it nice and easy.  Just go through two boxes a day.  And I really think that's the best way to go.

I had just started peeking into other boxes to check out what was in them, to see if the labels matched their contents...  A bit overwhelming, so...

Breathe...

Two boxes is good for today.

I had a lovely breakfast meeting, very productive, then went to my designer's house and finished the new release booklet, which looks splendidly splendid - I still have to write a short two paragraphs, which I'll do momentarily, then I have to write the blurb - we're planning on this going up by Monday or Tuesday at the latest.

Speaking of customer service, I went to BofA today - every single employee that I know and who take care of me are no longer working there.  I mean every single one, including the head assistant manager.  So, today they put a hold on a local check, which they've never done before - and there's no one for me to speak to.  I called small business services when I got home and while they can't do anything about it today, they will tomorrow when they can "see" the check.  The supervisor I talked to said she didn't understand why the teller put the hold on the check in the first place (I made a similar deposit three days ago with no hold - nor have they ever put a hold on a local check) - the teller told me the machine was asking for the hold.  So, something's screwy somewhere.  It doesn't matter in the scheme of things as the hold comes off on Monday, but it's the principal, and the supervisor was very nice about it and very understanding about my chagrin.  I'm fairly certain the hold will come off tomorrow - if not, we'll be having a further conversation about it, and then they'll have to assure me this will not happen again.

Well, I was recipient of another attack from Macbeth today.  He's really bummed that I'm the executor, and I do think he's spending too much time anticipating disasters caused by my being 500 miles away  It got a bit intense, until, when asked, I finally gave him the reasons I was retaining the position:
   1.  Last November, Dad still wanted me as esecutor, and we went together to make a copy of his will fro me to take to NYC
   2.  Since I knew my inheritance was unwelcome in some quarters, I was making sure that we all three got the same as the will specified
   3.  That I was seeing all outstanding bills on the estate were paid by me since there had been too much noise from the Macbeth side of the woods about how much my father owed them

I could have gone into how disappointed my dad was in both Macbeths after last year's scene, but I think I made my points without too much stone throwing.  Last summer, Macbeth's resentment made me cry because I never saw it coming from someone I loved.  That was last year's news.

And here is my new plateau of 25,000 postings!  And, in honor of it, here is the announcement of Kritzerland's first limited edition CD.

Kritzerland is proud to present its first limited edition CD release

DAVID SHIRE AT THE MOVIES

Originally released in 1992 and out of print for the last thirteen years, David Shire At The Movies is a wonderful compendium of Mr. Shire’s film music up to that point.    Mr. Shire is one of film music’s most unsung heroes, and this album is filled with his memorable themes from such films as Norma Rae, The Conversation, Max Dugan Returns, Return From Oz, Only When I Laugh, Fast Break, ‘Night, Mother, Old Boyfriends, The Earthling, The Promise, Farewell, My Lovely, and others.

The CD also features special guests Maureen McGovern and Carol Neblett.  Miss McGovern lends her unmistakable and beautiful voice to four of Mr. Shire’s classic movie songs, including the Oscar-winning “It Goes Like It Goes” (from Norma Rae), Only When I Laugh, The Promise, and “Halfway Home” (from The Earthling).

This was the first Shire album of its kind, and one of its joys is to hear these tracks in these chamber settings – unadorned – unplugged, as it were – just those incredibly gorgeous Shire melodies played by their composer and a handful of the best studio musicians who were working back then.  As a bonus, we are including Mr. Shire’s delightful Sonata for Cocktail Piano – the album runs over seventy-seven minutes.

This release is limited to 1200 copies only.  The album has been remastered, with improved sound, and the packaging is all new and includes lengthy and informative notes by Mr. Shire.  The album was produced by Bruce Kimmel and Nick Redman.   The price is $19.98 and the CD is only available at www.kritzerland.com as well as a handful of soundtrack specialty mail-order venues.

Preorders begin on February 27th and albums will ship sometime around the end of March or the first week of April.

No pun taken.

*And I also think I just have to adopt the "If I have to think about it, I should throw it out approach" with the rest of my "stuff".

Food for thought:

Loss of lives in 9/11 attack on WTC: 2,752

Loss of lives, thus far, for U.S. military in Iraq: 3,149

Monetary loss re: WTC attack:  $105 billion (buildings, insurance, etc.)

Monetary costs for war in Iraq (thus far): $370 billion (and exponentially increasing)

Got the new lamp.  Got the old lamp out easily, but the new lamp would not go in - I finally pushed hard and it seemed to go in and I got the screws tightened.  Turned the TV on and squat - nada - red "light" icon is still on, which means the bulb ain't working.  Any ideas.  Mitsubishi is closed right now.  The last time I did this the housing went in as easy as it came out - but this time not so.  I wonder if it's a bad bulb or if it's something I did trying to get it in there - either way, I'm not so happy right now.

We have been loosing power on and off since last night.  I filled up several containers of water to be on the safe side, when we loose power we also loose our water.  During the night every time the power went off or on the smoke alarm beeped, as you can imagine it was very tiring.

Good Evening!

Well, from "American Idol" to Playbill.com:

Producers to End April 22; Young Frankenstein Is Booked Into St. James (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/105975.html)

And since Young Frankenstein is most likely not slated until the late-late summer or fall, I guess that would still leave time for a special engagement of the recent Encores! Follies.

-Well, one can dream.

As for tonight's "Grey's Anatomy"...

Between Journey's End last night, and tonight's episode, I'm due for a light breezy comedy.

BK, are you sure you didn't put the lamp in upside down? Right-side up and upside down on my lamp look very much alike, but they are not the same. That's really the only thing I can think of unless they sent you the wrong lamp.

I continued watching KHARTOUM when I went back downstairs, but a lengthy phone call kept me from finishing it. There is still about 40 minutes to go.

It does look very good, and since we know MGM didn't do much of any processing on it before hammering it onto a DVD, I'm surprised really at the quality.

I then watched last night's THE KNIGHTS OF PROSPERITY. Another breezy charming, funny half hour as the Knights got locked inside Mick Jagger's panic room.

I wish the show were doing better. It's the sweetest comedy ABC has had since Sara Rue's late, lamented sitcom went off the air.

MY NAME IS EARL had a kind of off-night as we got the back story on Joy having Darnell's baby and letting Earl believe it was his, that is, until it was born when it was obvious to all that Earl wasn't the father.

As usual, Randy had most of the good lines.

THE OFFICE had a hilarious outing, a company party where Michael and Jan appeared as a couple for the first time. In the other plot, Pam and Roy had a BIG problem, and the sweet, self-effacing Toby obviously has a crush on Pam.

Jim and Karen? I'm not sure I can stand them together much more. She told Jim she was teasing about all the men she'd slept with, but the way she was chatting up the men at the bar, I'm not sure she was teasing.

CSI had a pretty bland outing as a high school basketball player and cheerleader go missing after a big game. The various perps were pretty predictable, and it was just a matter of sorting out who did what to whom by the end with everyone sharing in the guilt of the homicide.

And the final image of Grissom and Sara made me gag.

As for IDOL, I'm agreeing with Jose about the male who was said to be in the top four. Blame it on pre-pubescent girls who think he's cute because he gave a really horrendous account of himself on Tuesday night. I hope we aren't going to have another bland John "Red" Stephens again this season.

As for the women, the ones who left certainly deserved to leave.

I had a couple of other women I thought were really terrible, and I think their time will be soon.

Same with the men. I couldn't complain at all about the first guy they eliminated, but it was a toss-up for me with the other guy. There were SO MANY of the men that could have been eliminated and I wouldn't have been sad to see them go.

But Bucky was an adult and a country singer. The one we're talking about is a mere kid with a soft, awkward way of singing on stage, Just like "Red" Stephens.

At any rate, I hope the guys can "up" their game next week. If they want to compete with those pwoerhouse divas in any way, they're going to have to do something other than meek boy-band falsettos.

BK - What does Carol Neblett sing on the CD?

In yet another "two degrees of sepration from BK," Carol Neblett went to high school with Skip and performed back then in student productions of two of his musicals.  More recently, i had a lovely conversation with her about the IRS trying to apply the "Dinah Shore rule" (that a singer could only deduct costs of dresses they couldn't sit down in) to her wardrobe many years ago.

Re: American idol.

SPOILERS.

Well it was pretty much as predicted.  The people who went home were those who were not featured in the audition/hollywood phase.   And to prove my point further Sunjaya (who was terrible) yet who was featured prominently was in the top four guys.  I knew he was not going anywhere. And i'm not at all surprised he was in the top 4 guys.  Although that said, i actually think of the ones who sucked he showed the most promise.

I'm not surprised that rudy and paul kim left. But it could just as easily have been nick, jared or aj.  And as for the girls i am not surprised with the two who left (amy and nicole). But it could easily have been leslie or haley (although she was actually featured a bit).

I knew antonella was not going anywhere even though she was the only one standing there.  Even though i'm sure she grates on many people's nerves. She was featured a lot. So i'm sure some people must like her.

DR Jose, what was the broadway announcement they made? I saw the link to the producers closing. But i'm not sure how that relates to idol (granted i ff'ed through most of it).

LOL from DP Colin FJL.

Isn't purple one of those words like silver and orange that it is difficult to rhyme.

Was it Roger Miller who used "Maple Surple?

I've never heard of that song, but if I remember correctly, there are only four words in the English language that don't have rhymes (and three are colors):  purple, silver, orange...and month. :)
