Well, you've read the notes, the notes ran amok, and now it is time for you to post until the amok cows come home.

Yesterday, I wrote (just before leaving work):
Well, I'm now off to see a local production of "Picasso at the Lapine Agile." I was in "Cannibal: The Musical" with a couple of the actors. It should be very good. :)
And then François wrote:
;D
No! Lapine is for James, Sondheim's friend! (Or a female rabbit!)
It's "Lapin Agile", an old Parisian Cabaret!
http://www.au-lapin-agile.com/agile.htm
Welcome to the Cabaret!!
Let me say: Dopey me! What was I thinking? Anyway, it was a delightful show! It was a very quick 75 minutes or so (I didn't realize that it was a one-act) and a good time was had by all. The cast had great energy and the simple set was very cute. The little theater space (The Midnight Sun, where we had auditions for "Cannibal!") only held about 40 or so people and they even had to add a couple of chairs. The director and four of the actors or crew had been in "Cannibal!" I'm glad that I went. I wanted to go, but forgot about it and almost missed it. Their last show is tonight (Saturday). I was told that tonight's show has been completely sold out for the last couple of days!
-
After that, I came home and wanted to watch "Las Vegas," but my DVR didn't record it (I think I left the power on and it wasn't able to change channels without prompting, so it didn't :-\). It did record "Ghost Whisperer" and "Psych" and I watched "Ghost Whisperer." I then watched the last half hour or so of "Polyester" with Divine and Tab Hunter. That was funny. I need to see the first hour to really know what happened, though. ;) Anyway, that was my evening.
-
Were pictures taken?
I've just read this that BK posted yesterday:
Miss Patti took photographs and I suppose she'll post them at some point, probably tomorrow.
;D
-
And to all, a good night.
:)
-
I am on my way to bed.
What a night. I watched:
The Sound of Music
Hello, Dolly!
Cabaret
Funny Girl
White Christmas
The real pleasure of it all was to see them in fantastic color and widescreen splendor on my new TV.
"The Sound of Music" is dazzling. The location shots are stunning and the entire film seems to have a depth I've not seen in previous viewings. Of course, the "plasma" picture helps a great deal and the 37-inch screen really opens the picture up for me.
"Hello, Dolly!" is amazingly vibrant in its use of colors. The reds are dazzling, and the musical numbers seem to explode off the screen. I'm deeply appreciative of what the new technology offers.
"Cabaret" was widescreen, but not anamorphic and not a digital master. It's still brilliant to watch, but it suffers in comparison to older and newer films that have been mastered for HDTV viewings.
"Funny Girl" is awesome. Still packs an emotional wallop for me. And the colors are incredible. I've not seen so much detail in this film...ever. Probably never noticed it in the theater.
"White Christmas" is both anamorphic and digital, but it seems a bit the worse for wear and tear. The colors seemed a bit muted and the visuals were a tad grainy. I think Paramount could do better with it.
I'd have watched another musical but my eyes just don't want to stay open any longer.
-
What great fun reading about the BRAINEX party!
Thanks for the on the spot report!
Glad DR ELMORE is back home where he belongs. Lovely photos from DR LAURA and DRJANE - that doggie IS big!! And not so lovely photos from DR EDISAURUS.... Didn't watch the video, DR FJL. I read the reports and that was E-nuff for me!
-
So many pages yesterday, my hand fell asleep on my mouse while I was reading them!
DR MBARNUM thanks so much for the DVD care package. I have only watched a bit of HOT SUMMER but it is freakazoid to say the least. I am fascinated that even in a beach movie (on the Baltic Sea) - most of the German choreography consists of marching.
-
According to www.irs.gov, my refund is scheduled to be mailed on March 2.
If you have filed your taxes and know your SS #, your filing status (single or married or Whatever), and the EXACT amount of your refund, you can go to that site and find out when it is due to be sent to you.
-
Turned out to be busy yesterday, which was great. I had six consultations and two aura photos & interpretations between 3 pm and 7 pm.
-
Work today, again. Hopefully we will be busy again.
I am working with the girl who can't talk.
To her the Rider-Waite Tarot Deck is the Rider-Wyatt Tarott Deck. Pictures are pitchers. And she has a counsel in her truck that I can only figure out is the console. I don't want to get into her pronunciation of the triquetra.
-
TOD:
I haven't seen any films at the theatre this year, so I can't really comment. But you can bet your boots I will have PLENTY to say tomorrow night during the ceremony!!
Tonight I am going to a party with a friend. Does that surprise you? You didn't know I had a friend did you? Hahahahha!
DR MBARNUM - is the KLONDIKE episode you are watching the one that features the lovely Ms Allison Hayes?
-
Actually I would enjoy the Oscars much more if they let Miss Carroll Baker come out and do a scene from THE CARPETBAGGERS and have an Annette Funicello clip fest - and then have Hayley Mills give Fabian a special Oscar for his contributions to film.
But I don't think it's that cold in hell yet.
-
I'm up early, between the weather radio going off and the rain starting, I decided to get up. It's raining and 34 degrees...it will change to freezing rain and then we're supposed to get 6-12 inches of snow. This is going to be a mess.
-
My brother just called. He's also up for some unknown reason and thought I just called him so he called me back....I called him about 6:00 PM yesterday afternoon. Anyway, we both got a laugh out of it because we both thought that a call this early on a Saturday had to be important, especially with our parents on the road
-
Maybe DR ADRIANNA PATTI took some photos last night.

I'm REALLY glad my parents are in Joplin for the next couple days. They will miss the snow, can visit my sister and her family and have some place to go if the severe weather hits down there.

If The Brain gets a movie deal, here's just the production company to do it:

*You* obviously haven't!
-
I'm off for awhile, sounds like the rain has stopped although the wind is howling. I lost a big limb yesterday. I can't figure out if a tall truck hit it or if the wind just took it, but it's laying in my yard like someone set it there
-
Jose, have a great Oscar marathon
-
As for my Oscar predictions... Even though I haven't seen all the contenders for Best Film, I really do feel that there is no obvious winner this year. -Heck, after "Crash" won, all bets were off. After I see all five today, I'll be able to post a more educated and informed opinion. ;)
The one category I'm truly wondering about is the "Best Song" one. I'm trying to figure out if the three songs from "Dreamgirls" will end up canceling each other out. And as much as I would like Jennifer Hudson's song, "Love You, I Do" to win, it really wasn't the best thing in the movie, and if a song from "Dreamgirls" were to win, I'm betting it would be "Listen" - based on Beyoncé's name recognition.
-
How can it be a Romance novel without sex? Isn't that why you read them?
Harlequin has several divisions or genres or something. I think one series of books has sex (maybe that's why there are so many of them! ;D) but the original ones didn't. My ex-mother-in-law read them all. We tried to write one of our own so I read a few in preparation. It's basically the same story, different people. Kind of like an episode of Scooby Doo.
-

-
Have fun at the movies today, DR HO - SAY.
-
Have a great Saturday, HHW'ers!
-
Jose, have a great Oscar marathon
I hope it is. I think the key will be remembering to walk and stretch between movies. From the looks of the schedule:
Babel 11:00 a.m.
The Queen 1:45 p.m.
The Departed 3:45 p.m.
Letters From Iwo Jima 7:00 p.m.
Little Miss Sunshine 9:45 p.m.
...It looks like we only get about 15 minutes between movies. -I guess I won't be staying for all the credits this time round. At least I've already seen "The Departed" and "Little Miss Sunshine", so if I need to take a break, I can. However, I'm going with my buddy, Mark, and he hasn't seen any of the nominated movies this year, so... -Strangely enough, however, he has seen a bunch of the documentaries, the animated features, and all the Foreign Language nominees. Go figure.
However, I believe the big key to surviving the day will be controlling my consumption of liquids... If you get my drift... And I'm pretty sure you do.
-
The old-school Harlequins had metaphors/similes that were used so often, they were clichés, and we used them a-plenty. "He crushed her mouth under his"..."His arms tightened around her like steel bands"..."His resolve stiffened" (I may have made that one up...).
Anyway, I think the NASCAR angle opens things up to a whole 'nother set of metaphors,"well-oiled machines" and the like. Oh, wait... no sex. Damn.
-
I didn't know you were Italian. 8)
First laugh of the day!
-
However, I believe the big key to surviving the day will be controlling my consumption of liquids... If you get my drift... And I'm pretty sure you do.
Just remember to bring your "Stadium Pal"®!

OK... I need to take care of some stuff around here before I head down to 42nd Street... But I'm sure I'll get at least one more post in before I leave the apartment for the day.
Laters...

I thought David Sedaris was kidding about stadium pal (when I saw him do a reading about it I almost needed one I laughed so hard!) but apparently:

Maybe you can pick one up on the way to the theatre!
-
Saturday morning greetings! It's a work day for me - all information-waitressing.
DR Elmore - glad you're home safe & sound.
DR Jose - DH Richard and I used to try to see the 5 nominees for Best Picture, but not all in the same day! Have fun!
DR Cillaliz - Hope the weather comes and goes before it has a chance to interfere with your travel plans.
-
Larry - Glad you're home safe and sound
-
Might as well get to page 3!
-
Cilla - Weather clearing vibes

How can it be a Romance novel without sex? Isn't that why you read them?
Is that what all that "quivering," "throbbing," "manhood," etc means in those tacky novels? No wonder they're all my mother ever read!
Well, I got to bed around 2:30 and up at 8AM. I feel like crap, but I'm extremely happy to be home. In 30 minutes I shall collect two weeks of mail, which I'll lug home in shopping bags. I hope there are no huge packages!
I'm glad The Brain partay was a success. Don't I get a ton of complimentary CDs now?
-
Good Morning! Once Again!
Well, I believe I'm all set to head down to the Empire. Mark didn't want to meet until 10:30, but I just checked AMC's site, and the event is sold out for today, so I think I'm going to try to get down there a little earlier just in case. But before I go...
-
DR elmore - If you feel like you need a nap later today, take one. :)
-Do you have any plans for tomorrow? Brunch? Lunch? Dinner? Etc?
-
DR edisaurus - As for the "Staudium Pal"... I think I shall pass on that one - no pun intended. ;)
-They just remind of the cross-country car trips when I was a kid. My parents, myself, and my three younger brothers in a yellow Ford Gran Torino with a black(!) interior - boy, was that fun going through the desert in Nevada. :-\ We would sometimes stay in a motel or hotel for the night, but most of the time we would end up pulling into a rest area, and my parents would set up the "Car-mada Inn". And we would never throw out Coke bottle during the trip... If you get my drift... And I think you do.
;D
-
OK - I should get going. Mark and I will be treating ourselves to a post-movies meal somewhere in midtown after our viewing extravaganza today, so I probably won't be back here until well past midnight (EST).
I hope everyone has a wonderful day. And for those of you dealing with wintry weather and other hazards today, Be Safe, Be Careful.
Laters...
-
Jose that sounds so cool. Have fun!
-
Happy Saturday everyone. Right now I am in stage one of my hair dying process. That is bleaching out the roots of my pink streak. Step two is re-pinking. Fascinating, I know.
-
I saw Idlewild last night- what an awesome movie. How did it not get a single oscar nomination??
-
Last weekend I saw two movies: Pan's Labyrinth and Music and Lyrics. Pan was the single most violent and disturbing movie I have seen in quite a while. M&L was cute and fluffy as I expected it would be. Drew Barrymore looked quite lovely and it was nice to see broadway vets Matthew Morrieson and Jason Antoon on screen.
-
Today I am going to dance class and then to bed bath and beyond for a new iron and assorted other household items. Then possibly tonight to a dance thing at NYU. Maybe I can squeeze in a movie...
-
I cleared out the joint!
-
Was the talk of repinking too much?
-
Elmore, I'm glad to hear that you are safely back home.
-
Nah, I love repinking talk.
-
I hear tell the Legally Blonde scenic design is extremely pink.
-
DR TPunk, repinking didn't scare me off - I was just away from the computer where I'm logged on. We've only been open an hour here and I've already needed some of your social worker skills.
-
And we would never throw out Coke bottle during the trip... If you get my drift... And I think you do.
*You* invented the Stadium Pal! Why, you oughta sue those guys!
-
Nah, I love repinking talk.
Do you cut your hair with pinking shears, TPunk?
-
Pan was the single most violent and disturbing movie I have seen in quite a while.
But it did have *crafting* in it. Remember the "sewing scene"? ;D
-
FJL, there's a package on its way to you, so
"Keep watching the skies. You're next! You're next! You're next!"
-
I'm glad I'm going into Atlanta today for SISTER ACT. All I can hear here are the sounds of chainsaws and dozens of large earth movers.
-
I'm glad I'm going into Atlanta today for SISTER ACT. All I can hear here are the sounds of chainsaws and dozens of large earth movers.
DR Edi, maybe it'll be dark by the time you get home and you won't have to see the results right away. Have fun at the show!
-
Good morning!
Gorgeous day here with temperatures a bit more normal: highs in the upper 50s. I have a good bit of movie watching to do today, however, so I won't be partaking of much of the fresh air and sunshine that's available.
-
A package on its way? Some flan in dry ice, perhaps? :)
-
They're doing that Oscar marathon at a theater here, too, but it's a 45 minute drive from my house and I decided against doing it even though I haven't seen any of the films. Of course, SUNSHINE, DEPARTED, and (maybe) BABEL are available on DVD now. I just haven't bothered to rent any of them. They'll be on my pay channels soon enough.
-
"Repinking"?
-
Oscar predictions don't really require that you see the movies since often quality isn't as important as notoriety, publicity, sentiment, buzz, and numerous other things.
Anyway, here are some reasonable guesses:
Best Picture - THE DEPARTED
Best Director - Martin Scorsese
Best Actor - Forest Whitaker
Best Actress - Helen Mirren
Best Supporting Actor - Alan Arkin
Best Supporting Actress - Jennifer Hudson
-
DR Edi, maybe it'll be dark by the time you get home and you won't have to see the results right away. Have fun at the show!
The results are already in. At this point, it's just the noise! And it's only going to get worse when they start showing up at 6AM with their nailguns and circular saws.
(Singing) We gotta get out of this place!
-
DR elmore - If you feel like you need a nap later today, take one. :)
-Do you have any plans for tomorrow? Brunch? Lunch? Dinner? Etc?
DR Jose, I have no plans for tomorrow, except to work on the final chart for Kevin Spirtas. I got a call on Friday morning about doing something for Joanna Gleason this week, too.
Dinner might be good.
-
My favorite song of the five nominees is "Our Town" from CARS which I really loved. "Listen" may indeed win, but for sheer melody, the CARS tune has it beat, I think.
Any of the five nominees is clearly superior to that absurd rap number "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp" that won last year.
-
So glad you got back home safe and sound, DR Elmore.
-
A package on its way? Some flan in dry ice, perhaps? :)
Haven't made the flan yet. I'm culinarily challenged plus our kitchen has been non-functional for years, so it's kind of a gamble. But if it turns out, well, that would be FLAN-TASTIC! :)
-
There's a featurette on the DVD of MR. MOTO'S GAMBLE detailing how they turned a Chan picture into a Moto picture, so I'll definitely be watching that this afternoon. I also have LAW & ORDER from last night that I'll probably get to.
Depending on what comes in today in the mail, I may have that Japanese film from Criterion to watch (WHEN A WOMAN ASCENDS THE STAIRS), something from the Alice Faye DVD box, or TOTAL RECALL on Blu-ray.
-
My Oscar Predictions:
Best Picture: THE DEPARTED
Best Actor: Forest Whitaker
Best Actress: Helen Mirren
Best Supporting Actor: Eddie Murphy
Best Supporting Actress: Jennifer Hudson
Best Director: Martin Scorsese
I'm not going out on a limb on any of these.
-
My favorite song of the five nominees is "Our Town" from CARS which I really loved. "Listen" may indeed win, but for sheer melody, the CARS tune has it beat, I think.
I would love to see Randy win another Oscar. I loved his speech when he finally won his first after 13 nominations.
"Please. I don't want your pity!"
I actually had tears in my eyes when he won, because the orchestra gave him a standing ovation and I've never seen them do that before.
-
Glad that you are safely back in NYC, DR Elmore!
-
I am off to my sister's house in Doylestown, PA, to install some additional memory into her PC and then perhaps do some Doylestownish shopping.
Everyone have a great Saturday!
-
Good morning, fellow Dear Readers. I am waiting for the plumber to call. I certainly do wait for people a lot, don't I? I am also waiting for the printer repairman to call -- the printer jammed yesterday.
-
TOD: My Oscar prediction is that it will run way overtime.
-
So glad you got back home safe and sound, DR Elmore.
Thank you, DR MattH, and every DR who sent vibes and wishes! I'm thrilled to be home, and the hurly-burly has begun: I called the post office to let them know I was coming for my mail, and when I picked it up, I said to the postman at the window that it seemed lighter than my usual 2-week amount of mail. The idiot sub postman for my mail route, who delivered mail to me yesterday even though there was a hold notice, didn't bring down the packages! What are they breeding at the PO these days? Color me PO'd.
-
So, the upshot is, I have to return and pick up packages. I think while I'm out I'll pick up fixins for chili and make some!
-

I was equally thrilled for him, and thanks for bringing back that Oscar moment into my memory.
-
I just noticed my SISTER ACT tickets are an "Afterwords" show...I wonder if FJL's friends who wrote the show will be there? Guess it's too late to find out.
-
I'm heading down now to tidy up some things before beginning to prepare lunch.
WBBL.

Do you cut your hair with pinking shears, TPunk?
Nope, but perhaps I should start.

But it did have *crafting* in it. Remember the "sewing scene"? ;D
ug
-
I have successfully repinked!
-
Now I will put together my salad for lunch. Toodles!
-
Welcome home, Elmore.
-
I, too, like the Cars song better than any of the sub-par Dreamgirls additions.
-
elmore, let me know if the package I sent to NY was amongst them.
-
Oh, and I'm up.
-
She of the Evil Eye will be here soon, so I'd better at least get dressed.
-
My Oscar prediction is that someone will win.
-
Other than what some people call the "no-brainers", Best Actor/Actress, Best Supporting Actor/Actress and Best Director, I do not have a clue. The only nominated movie I've seen is The Queen. I doubt that I will watch more than 10 or 15 minutes of the Oscars, which is sad because so many years ago I salivated at the thought of watching the Oscars and I saw every nominated movie that I could see in Minneapolis. We had Oscar parties and made a big deal out of it. Now, I check the New York Times the next day for the complete list of winners and yawn.
-
I am off to the post office and to the offices of Time-Warner Cable of NYC (I pay my bill there, thus saving $0.39 in postage) and then I'm off to look for a new bathroom soap container and a new toothbrush holder.
Lar, glad you're home!!!
-
elmore, let me know if the package I sent to NY was amongst them.
The package with THE BRAIN and Joan Ryan was the only package in the first round of mail that I picked up.
-
I'm glad I'm going into Atlanta today for SISTER ACT. All I can hear here are the sounds of chainsaws and dozens of large earth movers.

Giant Sinkhole Swallows Homes, Killing Two
By JUAN CARLOS LLORCA
AP
GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala (Feb. 23) - A 330-foot-deep sinkhole killed two teenage siblings when it swallowed about a dozen homes early Friday and forced the evacuation of nearly 1,000 people in a crowded Guatemala City neighborhood.
The pit emitted foul odors, loud noises and tremors, shaking the surrounding ground. A rush of water could be heard from its depths.

So, now you have 2 BRAINs, DR Elmore?
-
Was the talk of repinking too much?
Well, you'll just have to forgive us if we call you "TPink" from now on.
-
It was a bit chilly last night. I know because I woke up cold and had to pull the covers up.
Why I didn't simply turn on my mattress warmer I couldn't tell you.
-
It's time a enjoyed a bit of a repast....time to break my fast, so to speak.
A nice hot bowl of cinnamon oatmeal, I think.
I'd love some grits, but I don't have any bacon or sausage that isn't frozen.

Here are my Oscar predictions. Actually, they're DS-FC (Dear Spot-Faced Cat) Joshie's predictions. I read the lists of nominees to him last night. If he flicked his tail or twitched his ears when I read a name, that's the one I went with.

DR DERBRUCER - is that an ad for Open Pit Barbecue Sauce?
-
I haven't seen any of these movies and have only heard of a few of them, so I'm just trusting Joshie on this. But he hasn't seen any of them either, so I don't think he knows what he's talking about.
-
I am working with Trish the talker today who just happened to mention that she had a childhood and it was just an astigmatism that she had to deal with.
-
DR Sandra, didn't Rex have any predictions?
-
He was outside. I didn't want to go out there and call his name. When I yell, "Rexykins! Come here, Rexykins!" the neighbors think I'm yelling, "Mexicans! Come here, Mexicans!"
They think that's odd.
-
Astigmatism?
-
So, how's it going, Mom?
-
Hey all. Been trying to read the posts and trying to find time to post for the last few days but one thing always leads to another and I never finish. It's rather cold today in the Area of Bay in CA. Normally, I don't feel the cold much, but my feet and hands are like ice.
The last few nights, I was the "conductor" for Pippin and that worked out quite well. I must say as I never speak to highly of the SS (that would be Stephen Schwartz as opposed to Stephen Sondheim - bk's close personal friend) it was fun to play some of that music. It's one of those shows one can really get into musically. Plus, the band (we're 5 pieces) really rocks and it's always fun to play in the middle of an ensemble were the players really work together. Tonight, it's back to the synth part <yawn>.
I have no Oscar predictions. I hope the movies I have seen this year - "The Devil Wears Prada", "Cars", "The Queen". "Little Miss Sunshine", "Dreamgirls" do well in whatever category they deserve to win in.
Time to clean the house. Will try to keep up today!
-
Good morning / afternoon/ evening!
We had a very strange performance of ANNE FRANK last night. We had only been off since Tuesday's show, so we shouldn't have lost the pacing, but the whole performance seemed slow and a little bit forced. Several Laurence-Olivier-why-don't you-try acting moments by me, and by other cast members.
The strangest thing about the evening was the audience. We have gotten very positive reviews for the show, good word of mouth, and there have been several Anne Frank-related news stories the past couple of weeks. So, we were a bit surprised when, instead of our almost sold-out houses of the last few weeks; we had instead about a half house for the show...
...And, they just sat there, staring at us for two-plus hours, like we were a touring exhibit of King Tut memorabilia. No laughs, no intermission buzz, and a very subdued curtain call. A very strange evening!
-
Owwww. Sorry to hear that. Can you still walk? ;)
Yes but with a lim(b)p
-
So, how's it going, Mom?
I have been doing yardwork while awaiting servicemen calls.
-
DR edisaurus - As for the "Staudium Pal"... I think I shall pass on that one - no pun intended. ;)
Who needs a Stadium Pal, just get NASA diapers!
-
So, the upshot is, I have to return and pick up packages. I think while I'm out I'll pick up fixins for chili and make some!
OOOH! That sounds good, I'm going to check the cupboards to see if I have all the ingredients and if necessary make one more run to the store.
-
So, now you have 2 BRAINs, DR Elmore?
And you know two brains are better than one....
-
He was outside. I didn't want to go out there and call his name. When I yell, "Rexykins! Come here, Rexykins!" the neighbors think I'm yelling, "Mexicans! Come here, Mexicans!"
They think that's odd.
LOL, my mother used to call our dog by yelling "Su-gar....cootsie lover button coo.. ..Su-gar" At the top of her voice.
-
Vibes to TCB for a receptive audience who shows their emotions
-
So, now you have 2 BRAINs, DR Elmore?
No. I left my Brain with Randy & JoAnn.

Mexican Chili!!! Git ur Mexican chili right hyeer!!

Windy and chilly here today....the temperature kind. But only a bit of rain forecast no white stuff.
-
DR RLP we got another Jane Roberts/Seth book in our used section....was that something you were commenting upon or something you were interested in reading?
-
The Diary of Anne Tut.
Well - it's different to be sure! I enjoyed playing the Doctor/Dentist....but the potato stealing scene was always difficult.

Wow.

So it is spoken, so it shall be done - Yul Brynner.

Not one of you whippersnappers has sent the requested television vibes and we NEED THEM because I'm now being told that the techician has not been heard from and they're not sure he'll even GET here today. That would be bad, very very bad.

Back from various travels and no packages arrived, which means the Italy package is done for and I'm out another CD.

Look at all those people just sitting there like so much lazy fish.

You'd think it was a beautiful Saturday.
-
I was just about to ask if Mr TeeVee had arrived, being's how it was the Sattiddy of the Evil Eye AND a service call.
Hmmmm....how does one become "not heard from"?
My guess is he will be there today about 3:20 PST. So hold your hats and hallelujah.
Or maybe he is having lunch with DR LAURA's repair man and talking shop.
-
Perhaps I just mooned the wrong house?

Not possible!! ;D
-
Back to work....such as it is today. Everyone is staying snug in their homes.
-
And the word of the day is: RIDENT!
TINDER is not normally RIDENT.
-
...I am working with the girl who can't talk....she has a counsel in her truck that I can only figure out is the console. ...
Either that, or she's kidnapped a lawyer.

I'm at work ordering books for the library. No, really...I am! ;D

Gotta give it to the weather forecasters on this one. They said it would start getting bad at 3:00 PM. Well I got back from the store at about 2:40 and at 2:50 it started, can't tell if it's freexing rain or mostly snow, but I fear it's falling more like freezing rain....

-
vibes for BK's tv....may the repairman arrive quickly and be able to fix everything in seconds flat

I do have a pot of chili simmering on the stove and I picked up some cheese, crackers and veges so I can have treats during our Oscar partay tomorrow night
-
Was the talk of repinking too much?
It sounds like something you do with shears.
-
No. I left my Brain with Randy & JoAnn.
And what did you leave with the Macbeths ;) ?
-
It was a bit chilly last night. I know because I woke up cold and had to pull the covers up.
Why I didn't simply turn on my mattress warmer I couldn't tell you.
Does your mattress warmer have a name? Are there pictures? Or are you determined to keep him from us?
;D

It's been a real full-moon kind of day in the library today. I'm glad to be in telephone reference for the duration - only an hour and a quarter!

It's that pesky Mercury retrograde DR GINNY. But the full moon on March 3 will bring its own joys.
DR SWW - a lawyer in the truck is not beyond possibility.
-
I've spent the last few days cooking goodies for der Brucer to consume.
Onion soup, a la Julia Child. Very good.
Roast duck, also a la Julia. Not as good, a tad overdone. (But her way of blanching Brussells sprouts before cooking them in butter worked quite well.)
Lamb chops, loaded with rosemary and garlic.
Tonight, I'm cooking what I want to eat. I'm thinking of going Chinese.
-
Page seven Chinese dance from Fantasia. But I don't have a pic, you'll just have to remember what it looked like.
-
I am now officially out of Cherry Coke. So it's off to the grocery store.
-
I'm officially out of butter. I'm blaming Julia. (Sorry, Jose, better luck next time.)
-
Keep them vibes and xylophones coming because they're WORKING so far. Heard from the techinician and he's on his way. Yes, keep 'em coming and then maybe I can watch the Oscars in all their gory glory.
I've written a little over two pages. I'm really enjoying the section I'm in - I've never really written the sort of conversation I'm writing, which involves two detectives.
-
More vibes and xylophones to BK and his tv technician. May the traffic be light and he have all the necessary answers and parts when he arrives
-
TV tech vibes for BK!
I'm also going to be able to watch the Oscars and attend the HHW partay more comfortably that I have in the past. Now that we have a laptop, I can extend my internet cable into the family room, log on here using the iBook, and watch the show in color on the bigger TV.

ANOTHER Musical version of Gone With the Wind[/i] (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/106008.html)??
::)
-
The Gone With The Wind thing is all a publicist's dream - just to get names out in print - standard issue PR crap - they'll be on the boards in 2008? Yeah - no writers, no composers, no lyricists = no show.
-
No technician yet - he didn't speak very good English, which I hope is not a problem when he arrives, and I hope he arrives soon.

All of us who had done theater have had nights like that. Things that usually work beautifully don't work at all, and then you wonder, should I try harder to push for effects? Should I play as usual and let the chips fall where they may? Should I experiment with something totally new to see if they respond to that? Some nights are just off nights, and it's as much (or more) the audience than it is the actors and production.
-
Will we never get to page six.
We will and we did!

Of course I send positive thoughts oin getting your TV fixed. I know how AWFUL it would be for me to be without my primary set, and the last time my lamp burned out, I was just getting ready to watch something in HD, and I had to go into the other room and watch it on the regular TV.
I had a spare lamp, but the old one was too hot to touch for at least an hour, so I let it cool down overnight and just "suffered" through regular TV until the next day.
-
You see, you see - vibes worked beautifully. Technician got here, removed the lamp, saw that the "connectors" were bent (which is why I had so much trouble getting the housing to go in) - he fixed them, put the housing in easily, and voila - I have my TV back, brighter than ever.

Don't you HATE it when that happens??
;)

I watched the featurette on the making of MR> MOTO'S GAMBLE. I was one of those who always thought that Warner Oland died during the making of CHARLIE CHAN AT THE RINGSIDE, and it was just immediately switched to a MR. MOTO. That's not how it happened at all. In fact, Oland didn't die until five months after the release of MR. MOTO'S GAMBLE. The real story is actually very interesting, and it's the first time I've ever gotten the true story, so this was a very valuable featurette.

Next, I finished KHARTOUM that I had started a couple of days ago. Ended up enjoying it, and I liked the main title of this movie a lot.
-
I should ask for repairman vibes on Monday.
-
I always love your Callie and Boo photos.
-
Glad the tv was fixed quickly and easily.
-
Next, I put in ZIEGFELD FOLLIES and watched selected musical numbers. The Technicolor is just beautiful in this movie, very lush and deeply saturated. I skip all the comedy sequences. They aren't funny now (were they ever? well, Guzzler's Gin was at one time), and are painful to sit through.
-
I wondered where DR Sandra was. DS and I went for coffee and when we got home she was gone.

I forgot my login name so I had to have it e-mailed to me. Now, I'm supposed to enter a nickname and I don't think it's working! It looks like it's taking a LLOOOONNGGG time to get to the next screen, which usually means that it's not going to work. :P
But I'm tryin'. :-\

It worked!! ;D

I just looked at the site...GeorgeD, you're in!

Will we never get to page nine?
-
Just checked out a few things I'd TIVOd during the time the bulb had burned out, including Pepe, which doens't look quite as good on a big screen as on a small screen - and I hate that it's the short version - there are many nice things cut, including Judy Garland's Faraway Part Of Town, which has a lovely Shirley Jones dance by Eugene Loring.

Still on it!

Now I have to decide on what movie it will be for this evening. I have lots of stuff I haven't watched, so it really could be anything at all.
-
I'll probably try to write another page or two, since I most likely won't get much done in that regard tomorrow.
-
Will we never get to page nine?
I predict yes (and this is not an Oscar prediction!)
-
LOL, I can't believe how hard it's snowing. We were supposed to have 1 inch all day with lots more over night, we've gotten an inch in the last hour! If this keeps up it will be a doozie!

-
Photos please, Cillaliz.
-
Hmmm, I thought Faraway was one of the things they cut - strange. I love that moment in the film, though, and I like Mr. Loring's very Robbins-like Rumble.
-
Welcome seven GUESTS. Who are you people?
-
I'm in the Oscar pool as DM. All my predictions are guesses, except for the acting categories and best director.
That is all.
We just got a CD of pictures from our Nottingham friends. We are going to look at those right now.
Later, gaters.
-
I'm enjoying seeing the predictions.
-
Listening to the second of this batch of Oscar promo CDs I got last night - Thomas Newman's The Good German - which was, I suppose, temp-tracked with a bunch of Herrmann, Steiner (the opening is pure Casablanca), and like that, and Mr. Newman does a fine job imitating them.
Prior to that I listened to James Horner's score to All The King's Men - his usual work - reminiscent of many of his other scores, but not a bad listening experience.
-
After this is finished playing, back to the book for a page or so.
-
I'm kind of tired - perhaps I'll put on the TIVO of The Slender Thread after I'm done with another page. That should put me to sleep very quickly. I can't remember exactly what year it came out, either 1965 or 1966 - well, wait, I can find out right now -
-
Gosh, I toddle off to the office for a few hours and there's so much to catch up on.
-
Are we at page 9 yet?
-
Glad the party was a success!!!
Sandra-Thank you & I hope Josie is wrong about the best picture.
JRand-Glad you enjoyed the photos of our BIG puppy.
OMG that is a big hole! So sad it had to swallow children.
Cilla-Oh so cute photos.

1965. So, I was at a New Year's Eve party in December of '65. Can't remember much about it, or whose party it was, other than it was somewhere in Beverly Hills. I left the party at, let's say, three or four in the morning. I had no way of getting back to the disgusting place I was living in (an interim experience, staying if a fellow student's tiny cottage with my friend Alan Abelew - we both slept in the living room - I would soon move into a nice apartment), nor did I want to go back there. So, I was going to see my mother at our house in Beverlywood, but not until around one on New Year's Day. So, I just walked around Beverly Hills all that early morning - street after street, gazing in store windows, just killing as much time as possible. I can't remember if I actually found an eatery that opened early, but I think I ate something somewhere around eight or nine. I then walked by the Beverly Theater, but their first show wasn't until noon. Then I walked over to the Stanley Warner Beverly Hills and they had a show starting at ten. That was great news. I hung out until the box-office opened at nine-thirty, bought my ticket and went in. I believe I was the only one in the theater, or maybe there were a couple of other people. The movie? The Slender Thread. It began at ten, and I enjoyed the first ten minutes of it, then promptly fell sound asleep and I woke up just before it ended. I left, went home, got into bed (my nice bed), slept another six hours, then had dinner with my mother.
-
The point being that I've never actually seen more than the opening ten minutes of The Slender Thread. I watched the main titles an hour ago - and now I think it will put me right to sleep at just the right time.
-
I had quite a good bacon and cheese omelet this morning at Four and Twenty Pies - first time I've ever been to one. I think I will try to be good and not eat much of anything else.
-

THE SLENDER THREAD is based on a true story that was originally published in LIFE Magazine. Although the film was shot in Seattle, the actual events took place in Tacoma.

The good news is, my work schedule has be getting off from work tomorrow at 4:15. This means I'll be watching the Oscars. Of course, this also means that I'll be staying up for the Oscars... what time are they supposed to be over, here on the East coast?

I'll be staying up for the Oscars... what time are they supposed to be over, here on the East coast?
My guess is around 4 a.m.

I'm glad The Brain partay was a success. Don't I get a ton of complimentary CDs now?
Don't I even get ONE now?

OOOH! That sounds good, I'm going to check the cupboards to see if I have all the ingredients and if necessary make one more run to the store.
Thoroughly Modern Chili, I hope!
-
I can't believe that BK logged off without telling us what he is going to do for the first time in eight weeks!
-
Thoroughly Modern Chili, I hope!
LOL, more like good old fashioned bland midwest chili, but I like it.
-
He was outside. I didn't want to go out there and call his name. When I yell, "Rexykins! Come here, Rexykins!" the neighbors think I'm yelling, "Mexicans! Come here, Mexicans!"
I have a semi-illiterate neighbor who always used to complain about all the Mexicans "conjugating" out in their front yards. I suppose he meant "congregating". If they were conjugating, they would be learning English, thus giving this guy one less thing to complain about!
The Mexicans are now gone, along with the trees...

You're right. I know I can't go eight weeks without pancakes!

DR Cillaliz, thanks for the adorable photo!

Eugene Loring also did the spectacular dance numbers in THE 5,000 FINGERS OF DR. T.

Some "fishy" news!
Sierra Boggess, who currently portrays Christine Daae in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom — The Las Vegas Spectacular, will head the cast of the Broadway-bound Disney musical The Little Mermaid.
In a statement Disney producer Thomas Schumacher said, "We are delighted to announce Sierra Boggess is our Ariel. She is a thrilling young talent and I am certain audiences will discover that she was destined to play the beautiful young mermaid."
Actress Boggess added, "I am so excited to be able to play this role. Ariel is such an iconic Disney princess and to be able to bring her to life on the stage is a dream come true for me!"
In addition to Phantom — The Las Vegas Spectacular, Boggess has been seen in the national tour of Les Misérables as well as regional productions of West Side Story, The Boyfriend and Pirates of Penzance. She created the role of Binky in productions of Princesses at Goodspeed and Seattle's 5th Avenue Theatre.
The Little Mermaid will play a pre-Broadway engagement at the Denver Center Attractions at Ellie Caulkins Opera House beginning July 26.
Performances will play through Sept. 9. The musical will arrive at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, current home of Disney's Beauty and the Beast, Nov. 3 with an official opening Dec. 6.
Additional casting will be announced shortly.
"In a magical kingdom beneath the sea," reads Mermaid production notes, "a beautiful young mermaid named Ariel longs to leave her ocean home to live in the world above. But first, she'll have to defy her father – the king of the sea – escape the clutches of an evil sea witch and convince a prince that she's the girl with the perfect voice." The musical is based on both the Disney animated film and the classic Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale.
Francesca Zambello will direct the musical, which features songs penned by Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman for the Disney film as well as 11 new tunes by Menken and Glenn Slater. Doug Wright has written the book for the musical.
The creative team also features Stephen Mear (choreography), George Tsypin (scenery), Tatiana Noginova (costumes), Natasha Katz (lighting), Angelina Avallone (make-up design) and David Brian Brown (hair design).
Tickets to the Denver run will go on sale March 18. Visit www.denvercenter.org for details.
For more information visit Walt Disney Theatricals on-line at www.disneyonbroadway.com.

Thanks Cillaliz,
I have now entered my pics for the Oscars.
Of course I have not seen any of those films up for awards, even though my intention was to have seen most of them by now....so I made my best guesses.
I do want to see some of the films, eventually.

Well, now that I am all caught up, I can report on SISTER ACT, THE MUSICAL.
Fantastic! I can't remember many Broadway musicals I've enjoyed as much as this show. Every single one of the performers were so talented and Broadway-worthy. The production was first class. The sets were minimalistic and all they needed to be.
The songs were so funny and the music was great. Every song was a good one---I wish I had a cast recording! My mother fell in love with the guy playing Sweaty Eddie and wanted to find out if he had any albums available. She just loved his voice!
We both enjoyed every single minute of it and after it was over, Mom said that it was the first time she'd seen a musical and would want to see it again immediately. I was sad that it's closing tomorrow because I would have tried to go again with my niece. But not as sad as the cast, because they've been working on it since September and their contract is up after tomorrow.
After the show, about a dozen of the cast members came out to answer questions. A group of middle school students, about 60 of them, were there from Charlotte, NC. They were sitting in front of us and they enjoyed the show immensely. It really is the kind of show that anyone from middle school to grandmothers would enjoy. The kids all had questions and were glad to be able to talk to the performers.
After that let out, we passed some of the performers in the lobby and talked to them some more. They told us that Atlanta was only the second city where the show had been staged...the first was Pasadena. After Pasadena they made huge changes---changes about 1/3 of the show, and the cast had 11 days to learn the new show. It has so many big dance numbers that this must have been quite a challenge for them.
I laughed, I cried, I loved it. And we had the best seats in the house---4th row, 2 on the aisle.
Thanks so much, FJL! And thanks from my mom as well!
-
Edi-Just what you needed! :)

I'm about to do something I haven't done in eight weeks, maybe more. Who can guess what?
Throw up?
Do the hokey pokey?
Watch The Lawrence Welk Show?
Clip your toenails?
Get something pierced?
Put on a dress?
Play air guitar?
Or watch your newly-repaired TV?
-
After I took my mom to brunch, we had time for a walk. I took her someplace down the street from the theatre, and this is what we saw:
-
The little goat on the right looked like he was wearing polka-dotted boxer shorts. We couldn't stop laughing at them, they were so CUTE!

Become Master of Your Domain?
-
Dance the Hora?
-
These goats were running amok---there were 6 babies, and 7 adults. This was my mom's favorite. They licked our hands and nibbled on our fingers. They have such soft little tongues!
-
Dance the Hora?
Hora For Hollywood!

Eugene Loring also did the spectacular dance numbers in THE 5,000 FINGERS OF DR. T.
I believe he also choreographed Copland's ballet BILLY THE KID.
-
Well, after a wacky day of errands and such, I'm going to forego the event I was planning on for this evening, and just sit here - like so much you-know-what.
Dear Esteemed, well-lit, and partayed BK -- We are all dangling here in great turmoil, like so many hanging chads, wondering what you have finally done after 8 weeks.
Personally, I liked DR Sandra's guesses..... DR Sandra, you are so wonderfully loopy!
-
DR Edi -- Only some of the new TVs use a bulb; they are of the projection variety, and I believe that the Grande Mensch has one of the DLP variety. (Digital light projection, in normal english)
-
For the first time in eight weeks I had a Jacuzzi - it was marvelously marvelous and has soothed my aching muscles.
-
That was going to be my ninth guess.
-
Dear Larry..... I'm glad you are back home safe and sound. Any of your relatives are crazy if they think that you can't take care of family business from your nest in NYC. I watch over some family trust business for my family, and I can do 90% of what I need to from my desk here, and with my laptop computer. Once in awhile I have to go over to southern Calif., to check on a rental building. But most of the time it is easy from home.
-
I'm glad to hear they've done good work on Sister Act, because it was a mess in Pasadena - one of the handful of musicals I bailed on after act one. Its creative team was very cocky out here after their final workshop, when they were telling people they were ready for B'way as soon as they finished Pasadena. They found out that workshops are not a barometer of what's working in a musical, because they invite all their friends to the workshop, and their friends hoot and holler and tell them not to change a thing - it's why the workshop process, as it's known today, needs to die.
-
So, it's nice to know that they actually did what they needed to do.
-
"The Case Of The Jew In The Jacuzzi"........a new thriller by Haddasah Christie !
-
I'm going to finish watching The Slender Thread, and then figure out what I can snack on - I'm figuring my omelet was my meal, and I'll just take it easy now because I need to lose the weight I gained back. I hate when that happens.
-
If I were to ever change my name, it would be to Haddasah.......I just love the sound of it.
I also loved the idea of actually having a First Lady in the white house named Haddasah Lieberman. :)
-
For the first time in eight weeks I had a Jacuzzi
J'accuse!
Ah, yes. That always feels good!
-
And as to the TOD --
I've seen so few of the Oscar movies; but I enjoyed The Queen very much.... and I saw Letters From Iwo Jima recently and liked it, but I felt it could have run shorter and still been very effective.
However, my favorite movie of the past 6 months was "The History Boys." I laughed, and I also teared up alot near the end. It was a marvelous small film!
-
C'mon Edi..... you can help me. We might as well roll this over to a nice "even dozen" pages.
OK bubeleh.... post..
-

That's probably why it's good to test it in Atlanta, since most of the cast were from LA or NY. The audience loved it here. They were on their feet for a unanimous standing ovation before the cast even took their bows.
-
help out DR Sandra...
-
We are so close......

I went outside about 20 minutes ago and measured 5 inches of snow so far and it's still snowing. GLad I don't HAVE to be anywhere tomorrow. It's a pretty and wet snow. I'll try to get some photos tomorrow
-
Well since I announced that I didn't know why I talk to people I'm related to I've had a message from one and spoken to 2 others. Sounds like jhvw will be visiting in April as he checks out some potential places to relocate. I'm looking forward to seeing him
-
Great Photos Adriana, thanks

I hope this works

Egbert---I'm glad he took his Brain off for the bows so you can see his beautiful face!

Yay..I have to go now

Boo has decided that she needs a warm lap to curl up in. She really is a sweetheart
I <heart> Boo!
My kitties know where the warmest spot in the house is...the space heater in the living room. These heat-seeking cats will stay there until we go to bed. Then the black and white one will crawl under the covers between us to stay warm.

I hope this works
And two lovely ladies!
Thanks for posting these, Adriana!

They are sweet. My cats like to sit by the heat vents, but lately have decided that blankets on the couch and warm laps are better.
-
One problem I have is singing to Boo. If I sing "You Are My Sunshine" It comes out "You Are My Boo Boo"
-
Oh, I love these cat pictures. Let me see if I can track down Rex(ykins) and a camera.

Cillaliz, aren't you glad we bugged you to keep Boo? We knew Callie would eventually come around.

Yes, I couldn't have given her up. I had the chance once and I just couldn't do it. I'm glad every day that I didn't
-
That Jacuzzi sounded really good. Think after the news I'll take a hot bath. That's as close to a jacuzzi as I can do
-
Oh, I love these cat pictures. Let me see if I can track down Rex(ykins) and a camera.
That would be fun to see
-
Here we have Rexykins rolling in the grass.
His name is Rex, but he doesn't answer to it. Besides Rexykins, he also answers to My Fluffy-Wuffy Pookie Kitty, but yelling that when the neighbors can hear you is about as bad as when they think you're yelling "Mexicans."

Thank you. I think there was some catnip involved in the taking of that picture.
-
Will we never get to page ten?
It's in the cards.
-
Edi - So glad you had a good time at Sister Act. Really enjoyed the report on it.
-
I will see all of the films up for Oscars eventually. If not on DVD, I'll see them on pay cable HBO, Showtime, or STARZ. That's why I subscribe to those services now since most of them don't have but one or two original series that I still like and watch (DEXTER, SOPRANOS which is ending, ENTOURAGE).
-
Thanks for the pics, DR Adriana. I've really enjoyed seeing them.
-
I began my evening finishing the numbers in ZIEGFELD FOLLIES that I wanted to see. "Love" and "Limehouse Blues" are both knockouts in Technicolor. Just gorgeous.
I also watched the quickly assembled "making of" featurette on the disc, but it could have been a lot more detailed and used more stills from the cut numbers.
-
Finished Slender Thread - not bad and I didn't fall asleep once. Now to watch a DVD of some sort on my newly beautified TV. It's so much brighter. Over the last three months all DVD transfers have looked darkish and I've been boosting the brightness. Now the brightness setting is back to normal and everything is bright and beautiful, as it should be.
-
But what motion picture on DVD shall it be. Something not too longish.
-
And I shall eat some grapes.
-
When it's REALLY cold at the house:

Will we never get to page fourteen? I feel 400 postings coming up tonight.
-
So it is written, so it shall be done.
-
Oh, Arthur, you've eaten more meat than anyone in this room.
-
Next, I watched TOTAL RECALL on Blu-ray disc. The high definition image was better than TERMINATOR 2's Blu-ray disc, but not up to more modern films like ENEMY OF THE STATE, FANTASTIC FOUR, and MISSIONS IMPOSSIBLE in terms of sharpness and depth of field.
I hadn't seen it in a long time, and I enjoyed it even if there were some dangling plot strands. The Blu-ray has both Dolby Digital EX and DTS-ES tracks, so the sound was appropriately booming.
-
Page 14 Cats Can Dance!
-
Will we never get to page fourteen? I feel 400 postings coming up tonight.
Yes, I'm sure it's possible.
-
I completed my evening's viewing with INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE. It's another film I hadn't watched in a long time. In fact, since I replaced the original DVD with the newer version that added a DTS track, I'm not sure I ever watched the movie, and it looked nice. An HD/Blu-ray transfer would certainly pick up more detail from those shadows and dark corners, but it still looks good, and the sound was lively.
-
Driving back and forth to Atlanta, my mom and I listened to The Brain. Listening to "The Plan", she said: "How do people write lyrics like that?"
I said "I don't know. Let's find out!" I was going to call bk and let her ask him herself but being a fan of Guy Haines, she chickened out!
-
I am eating chips. I just found one that looks remarkably like a pair of boxer shorts.
-
Tomorrow, in addition to Friday's LAW & ORDER which I still haven't watched, I need to take something from the to-watch shelf to whittle down that number by one more (KHARTOUM came from there the other day, and I'm ready to take another off that shelf.)
-
Is this a prelude to tomorrow eveing, perhaps?
-
I just came back from buying flan fixin's. My list included:
1 can evaporated milk
1 can condensed milk
and (this shows how much I cook) I didn't realize that there are different can sizes for each of these. And the other recipes I looked at don't specify what size can. Like there's only one. (I remember when there WAS only one!)
Now I'm too tired to try to look through the other recipes and figure it out and go back to the store again, so I will cook tomorrow.
-
I remember THE SLENDER THREAD as one of the first "grown-up" films that I was ever interested in enough to watch all the way through as a youngen.
-
This IS a prelude to tomorrow night.
-
Oh, Arthur, you've eaten more meat than anyone in this room.
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
It's not the size of the can, it's the....oh, wait, that's not how the saying goes.
-
Heading down to bed now.
Good night!
-
I wonder if Jose stayed awake for all of his films?
-
Good night, Matt!
-
Too bad you didn't hitch a ride with the kids from Charlotte!
-
Wonderful cat photos!!!!
-
Cillaliz, I had forgotten about the cats not liking each other very much at first...boy things have changed! :D
-
Have been transferring some episoded from the various WB detective shows that I had recorded onto my DVR and not yet watched (I am still p*ssed that Comcast yanked that channel off their lineup!) onto DVD and wow, some really fun guest stars in these episodes!
John Gabriel, the beautiful Claire Kelley, sweet little Dawn Wells...and BK fave Leslie Parrish!
I may have to be sending a copy to Bruce so that he can get his Leslie Parrish fix, seeing as how it has been awhile.
-
Writing the lyrics for The Plan was the most difficult of all the lyrics in The Brain because it was to an extant tune that David had in his trunk, written years ago. It was very catchy, and at that point in the writing of the show, he still wanted to write some of the score (he ended up with The Plan and a few measures of The Brain Tap). He'd played the tune for me and I just looked at him as if he were nuts and said, "There's no way to write a lyric for that - it's tuneful, but crazy." The next day I began writing the lyric. Once I had the rhyme scheme (that was the hardest part) then I was able to begin figuring out how to move it along - the half-step rises in the last part are mine, musically, and the tag music "You can kiss this little planet goodbye" is mine, as he couldn't figure out how to end it. He ended up writing three lines of the lyric (in the very last verse - "We have a perfect plan, a plan that's better than, the kind a human would try") - the rest is mine. The rhyme scheme, of course, for the opening section is the last word of the first two lines rhyme, then the last two words of the fourth and fifth lines rhyme (but not with the first two lines' final words) and the last word of the third line and the sixth line rhyme - once you set that pattern, you can't cheat - you have to do it each time. It's tough, but that's what makes it fun.
-
Truly wonderful work, Bruce. Interesting to read about your process on that song especially.
When you say it's tough, but that's what makes it fun, do you mean fun once it was written (or was the process somehow tough and fun at the same time)?
-
Good Evening! Good Morning!
Five movies in one day, back to back. Whew!
But I had a great time. And with this year's batch of nominees, it really did make for a very varied day of viewing.
So... I'm going to try to catch up on the posts now... and... Well..
Laters...
-
Tough and fun at the same time - really exhilerating, especially when you're really rolling with it. Writing lyrics is one of my all-time favorite things, and I've been blessed to have a facility for it and that it comes fairly easily - I have never really labored for weeks and weeks over a line. I'm a stickler for the craft of it - no false rhymes, ever - I'd rather chuck an entire song than have a false rhyme. Whenever I get stuck in that regard and I want to just say, "I can't say anything as clever without using a false rhyme" then invariably a whole new way of saying whatever it was will present itself, and it's alway better and fresher, and, of course, has a real rhyme. And for me, there's nothing worse than cheating once you establish the rules of the lyric - you can't just suddenly change the rhyme scheme just to make it easy on yourself.
-
Will we never get to page fifteen?
-
Whew!
All caught up!
And now...
-
So Jose, what did you think of the movies?
-
As for the movies I saw today, here are some very brief thoughts....
"Babel" - I had no idea what this movie was about, and I'm glad I came into it that way. I had heard that it was put together like "Crash" was, but that was about it. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and even found myself crying at the end. I would really love to know how it all was done, coordinated considering all the various locales and languages involved.
"The Queen" - Again, another movie I had no real idea about, except that it was about "the Queen", and the period after Princess Diana's death. I marveled at the conjecture involved in creating the story. And then you had that juxtaposed with actual news footage from that time 10 years ago.
"The Departed" - I liked it the first time I saw it, and I liked it again this time too. -And I really think Leonardo DiCaprio should have gotten nominated for this performance rather than the one in "Blood Diamond".
-Then came the 45-minute dinner break.
"Letter from Iwo Jima" - Again... All I really knew about this movie was that it was sort of a companion piece to "Flags of Our Fathers", and that it was in Japanese. Like DR edisaurus (I think), I liked the movie but I thought it could have been a bit shorter. -I guess Clint just likes to make long movies? *What was really interesting was the conversation the two women next to us had after the movie: "I can't believe Clint Eastwood made that movie... It's so anti-American... Why is that movie even nominated? It's not even in English?... I hated it..." -Etc., etc., etc..
And finally...
"Little Miss Sunshine" - The other movie that I had seen before today. It held up well to a second viewing too. However, I'm guessing a lot of people had already seen it before too... There were a lot of empty seats when the movie began, lots of people had left after "Letters". But still some great laughs.
-
So Jose, what did you think of the movies?
Funny you should ask.. ;)
-Timing is everything.
-
And after viewing all five movies back to back, I'd have to say "Babel" will get the Best Picture statuette. -Well, that's the one I liked the most today.
"Little Miss Sunshine" has a very slim chance - it's just too light in comparison to the other nominees. And The Academy has rarely awarded "light".
"Letters" could take it if The Academy is feeling patriotic and/or anti-war.
"The Queen" - I think The Academy will give Helen Mirren the nod, but since the movie deals with England, The Academy may pass on the Best Picture award.
"The Departed" - Well, it was a remake of a Hong Kong(?) film, so... But Scorsese could finally get the Director's award.
So... "Babel".
*And I have a feeling if "Dreamgirls" had gotten nominated, it probably would have won due to the popular vote. IMHO.
-
And on that note... Low A (bottom of the keyboard)...
Goodnight.
