Title: NOTES AND GOMORRAH
Post by: bk on February 27, 2007, 12:15:29 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had Gomorrah but not Sodom, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently waiting for Godot, who's in the cow country known as Gomoorah.

Eugene Ormandy conducting The Moldau - those who've read Kritzerland will know of the impact this recording had on me - sadly, still unavailable on CD as far as I know.

The Fantasticks - those who've read Kritzer Time know how listening to this LP in a listening booth at Wallich's Music City affected me and how its songs influenced me.  Same with Stop The World - I Want To Get Off.

Adrian Boult's recording of Rachmaninov's Second Symphony - I heard it whilst driving in the very early 70s - I stopped the car and got very emotional as I listened to it, then called the radio station that had just played it so I could find out what the music was and which performance it was.  Also sadly not on CD as far as I know.

A Tramp Shining - one of the first "concept" albums and one of the great albums of all time.  A blending of pop and classic song, with full and glorious orchestrations by composer/lyricist Jimmy Webb.  Its influence was huge, on me and everyone else.

Interesting slant on the topic. Mmm Life changing!

I did not really "discover" Mr Sondheim's work until I saw a production of "A Little Night Music" and bought the OBC recording.  I think it was this recording that led to my own horizons expanding.  I already enjoyed musical theatre but now caught the "bug". Later non professional productions of "Company" and "Follies" added much to my interest in the Art form.

"Blood Sweat & Tears" second album (The First was "Child is Father to The Man") introduced me to a more in depth style of pop music.  For the most part though I found the "concept" albums of the early 1970's somewhat over-indulgent. I guess when the Beatles released "Rubber Soul" in the late 1960's it also set a new benchmark.  "Revolver" and "Sgt Peppers" more than lived up to the promise.

My own "discovery" of violinist Nigel Kennedy through his recording of Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" had led me on to other works of which I was not familiar. I was now more aware of classical music recording with more than just technique.

The Ben Bagley series also influenced me to seek out works by the composers given tribute.  Books by Stanley Green have directed me down a number of very satisfying paths.

Good morning, all!  My self-indulgent intermezzo ends.  I have lab work ths morning in prep for next week's overdue physical exam, then a round with Rodgers & Hammerstein's CINDERELLA.  After that, I return here to work on the chart for Joanna Gleason.  And then, dinner with our DR Jose.

It should be a very good day.

TOD:

Like DR Tomovoz, I have to cite the OCB of A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC.  I was already somewhat a fan of movie musicals, and I had already been exposed to Sondheim through one of the Carol Burnett Show's mini-musicals, but the first time I listed to the cast album was mind-blowing for me.  The words and music grabbed me on both an intellectual and emotional level.  I played and played this LP, discovering more with each listen.  I became ravenous for more Sondheim, and couldn't wait till I got my hands on the COMPANY and FOLLIES albums.  I desired to learn more about his shows, of the people who also worked on them and the situations of their creation.

Worlds opened up for me because of A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC.

Another album that changed me was The Police's GHOST IN THE MACHINE.  During my teen years, I was a very up-tight and self-conscious about dancing and would avoid hitting the dance floor at all cost (which probably was a good thing, in a way, because I missed out on disco.)  But the first time I heard the music from GHOST IN THE MACHINE, something unlocked within me and I began bopping and grooving without a care.  I became a dancing fool thanks to The Police.

When i said there were a lot of heroes missing i was not joking. No hiro, no niki, no peter, no nathan ... and the list goes on.

And when i said claire's life would change forever. My gosh did it ever.  I was totally shocked at what happened.

It was very interesting to see the backstory between HRG and claude.  And very interesting to see little hiro and his father.

But where will claire go? I am not sure how this will work. She was a kid going to school. Does that mean we will not see her mom anymore? Or zach (i love zach).

I'm not sure buying any album opened up worlds for me...because there was always some impetus for buying the album.  I remember buying Captain From Castile, which was probably my first movie soundtrack, but that was because I had heard the music in the film. I remember hearing Vaughn Williams Symphony Anarctica on the radio one night and I went out bought it.  It was the same with show music or various artists. I always got a sampling somewhere first.

It was only later in life, I started buying blind.  There is one CD that probably changed my life which I bought with absolutely no knowledge of the artist at the time...that was THE VOICE THAT IS, featuring the song stylings on Johnny Hartman.  I came across the CD by chance in the mid-nineties and it just peaked my interest.  Hartman may now be my favourite singer.  And that album is certainly a favourite.

My first Ben Bagley album was a blind buy and many others came afterward.  I truly enjoyed discovering the obscure songs on those albums and they probably changed my life by making me much more adventurous in my buying.

WHO KILLED THE ELECTRIC CAR is fantastic. I saw it in the theatre with an editor friend. I noticed he was crying towards the end. I knew he was an early adopter of electric car technology, but I didn't know he had owned one of the cars in the film. I cried, too, just thinking about the mass stupidity and the wasted opportunity.

The I LOVE LUCY season 7-9 set is supposed to contain the I Love Lucy movie - which was three episodes of the series tied together with additional footage.  It was previewed in Bakersfield, but then never released because MGM thought it would lessen the impact of The Long Long Trailer.....

I don't think I would mind an occasional episode like this one that concentrated on certain cast members.  It's a nice change of pace to be able to focus on certain characters, particularly when dealing with such life changing events such as happened tonight.

Claire eventually had to break away from her father and family and hit the road as she did.  And now I understand why thy made Nathan her bio-dad--to have her head to New York and mix up with the other heroes there.  Everyone will be in NYC in the coming weeks.

Yeah, it does seem strange to just drop Zach with all that he knows about Claire.  And I wonder what memories the Haitian removed from Clair's dad?  What will he be like the next time she meets up with him?

TOD: Music is SO important to me; it really makes life worth living, I think. So there are lots of albums to chose from that have had a huge impact on me...songs that I can remember exactly where I was the first time I heard it, and then went on to discover the artist's whole catalogue.

I have had several instances of pulling off the road because I was too overwhelmed by what I heard and had to give it my full attention. If I fall in love with a song, I can listen to it dozens of times in a row without getting tired of it. (Good Vibrations, Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, the 2nd movment from Beethoven's 7th, the Who's Tommy, The Beatles' White album and Sergeant Pepper, Randy Newman's Sail Away, Harru Nilsson's Harry and the motherlode: Rhapsody in Blue are just a few.)

But if I had to pick one album that influenced my life above all others, it would be Van Dyke Park's SONG CYCLE.

Van Dyke is not a household name, but I became a fan of his through his work for Harry Nilsson and Randy Newman. He seemed to be this omnipresent musical force, whether it was playing piano or producing for other artists. He helped raise the bar on some of my favorite albums.

But when I heard his own music, (after pulling over the car) I can honestly say it changed my life. This was before the internet or CD's, and his albums were almost impossible to find. But I finally found an friend who was equally as fascinated by VDP's music and had all the albums which he graciously taped for me. (I have since bought them all on CD 3 times over in different releases.)

I felt a spiritual connection to this dense collage of music and never grew tired of hearing it because there was always some clever quote or hidden gem I'd never noticed before. But more importantly, I had discovered an artist who created the albums he wanted, not what some record label dictated. I learned early on in my career that I could work on things that mattered to me; I would also have to pay the bills but through determination and trying to always do my best, I could perhaps find a group of regular collaborators and clients. I also knew I was never going to get rich, but I would be happy in my work if I followed that path.

Years later we began corresponding and Van Dyke was as gracious and kind as you could hope your hero would be. Several times he offered his help on my documentary films, but our schedules never aligned.

Finally, on THE ADVENTURES OF OCIEE NASH, I knew I had a film that was tailor-made for his composing skills. I had to fight to use him; the producer had a composer buddy, the director had lots of people knocking at her door, and they had a tendency to favor people they liked rather than the person who was right for the job, because they knew nothing about music or the very important role it should play in giving a film its heart.

When several investors came aboard with money specifically based on VDP's name, the producers decided it would be a good idea to hire him!

Collaborating with him on this film from the beginning through the scoring session (with Grant Geissman in attendance) was without question the highlight of my professional career, and one of my favorite experiences of my life.

Van Dyke and his lovely wife even came to Atlanta for the premiere and Greg and I had the opportunity of showing them around for a few days. What fun that was, and they were as gracious and kind and generous as you can imagine, even though VDP barely broke even on this project, if that!

Well I am thinking about buying an HD tv in the next couple of weeks.  Only what I can afford, nothing spectacular.

From conversations here on HHW - let me see if I am correct.

My DVD's using my "S" cable will be in HD if they have been manufactured that way.

My cable runs through my VCR but I do not have HD cable anyway.  Do these TV's have an RCA connection so that I can connect my VCR?

My 5.1 Surround is a separate device that runs from my VCR and my DVD player.

Can I watch HDTV from my local stations over the air, will I need an antenna?

That is all.

Well I am thinking about buying an HD tv in the next couple of weeks.  Only what I can afford, nothing spectacular.

My TV died---it was an old one I had inherited from a client who upgraded to a flat screen. I didn't want to spend a ton of money, but it seemed like a good time to jump into the HD world.

This TV wasn't much more than what a regular TV of the same size would have been, plus it's HD, MUCH lighter and the picture is great.

Crutchfield shipped it---I was able to pick up the box by myself and fit it into my car. The first two TVs we got had damage but the 3rd time was the charm and we love it. There was also a $150 rebate at the time we bought...maybe it will come around again.

I upgraded to HD cable, so now I can watch THE CLOSER as it was meant to be seen.

The only thing I don't like, and I don't know if this is a tv problem or what, but we have a nice surround system that I hardly ever use because you can't control the volume with a remote, and I like to have control of it when I'm behind my editing table.

My TV: http://snipurl.com/editv

Crutchfield has EXCELLENT customer service, too!

Good morning dear Esteemed, sultry, and biblical BK --

A very interesting topic for today;  here are just a couple of examples that come to mind.

At the age of only about 5 or so, listening to both the Frankie Carle recording of "Near You" and the Boston Pops recording of "Perpetuum Mobile" on my grandmother's spring-wound, acoustic Victrola, with the records being 78s of course.  Also she had "Peter and The Wolf" as a 78 album (multiple discs).

Later, hearing an obscure but very richly orchestrated LP of all instrumental arrangements, conducted by Robert Irving and recorded in England.  Taking simple things like "Londonderry Air" and "Santa Lucia" and turning them into big sweeping complex arrangements that sounded like Max Steiner making love to Franz Waxman !!

Can I watch HDTV from my local stations over the air, will I need an antenna?

That is all.

I recommend shopping...try PlasmaBay.com

A TV with HDMI tuner will receive High Definition signals.  If you buy/have rabbit ears, you can pull in over-the-air High Def off network affiliate transmissions in your area (this is how I receive my high-def signals currently).  You can also "set up" the TV to receive all digital/high def signals over-the-air (you may be surprised at how many stations broadcast in digital/high def).

For all-digital transmission you will need that service from your cable company.  High def transmissions will probably cost a bit extra.

Watching DVDs on HDTV is a treat.  The video is not high-def, as it turns out.  It's just that most DVDs are digitally mastered (not the public domain ones, though) and you get so many more lines of resolution that you "see" the images as if for the first time...and with a clarity and brilliance that analog TV cannot provide.

In strictest terms (and DR MAttH is the better spokesman on this), HDTVs are "high def" only when receiving a "high def" signal.  If you buy "high def" DVDs, you must also have a "high def" DVD player to get the proper signal to your TV.

Most DVDs are not high def (or blue-ray), and regular (non-high def) DVD players don't play them.  Conversely, if you buy a high def DVD player, you can play all DVDs (except the blu-ray format) on it (this is true of a blue-ray player...all DVDs will play on it except high def DVDs).

The end result is "m-a-g-i-c."  Last night's "Heroes" was spectacular in high def....three-dimensional at times.  Just amazing.

Ok, I have a dilemma and I need some advice.   The weather looks iffy for Thursday.  I don't like the idea of fyling in a commute jet when it's snowing and windy.  I can do it but I don't like the idea.   I called American and since there is no weather waive right now it would be something like $1000 to change it....yeah right.

So my choices are, take a chance that the weather will cooperate or get a ticket on another airline, cancel this ticket and use it within the next year.  It would mean another full day in New York and I know I would get there.  It would be much less than the $1000 quoted by AA. But would add to the cost of the trip.  I'm thinking since it may be the last time I go for fun for awhile it may be worth it....any ideas?

"The Carpenter's - Singles" was probably the LP that changed my life (I was 5 - but it had a huge impact) as well as my mom's old Diana Ross and the Supreme's LP's.

The first musical that got me charged on musical theatre had to have been the first musical LP I purchased "Once Upon a Matress".  After that, it was down hill all the way.

Seminal recordings of my life:

Sir Adrian Boult's recording of "Enigma Variations" (Elgar).  My first hearing of a portion of "Nimrod" was in the funeral sequence (for Randolph Churchill) in "Young Winston"  I read a review of the score by Sir Alfred Ralston and mention was made that Ralston interwove Elgar with his own compositions.  I found this recording of "Enigma Variations" in a record shop in London in 1973.  It has been one of my favorite listens ever since.

The Sutherland/Pavarotti, Zubin Mehta-conducted "Turandot" -- sheer h-e-a-v-e-n.

Carole King's "Tapestry"

Phoebe Snow's first album "Phoebe Snow"

Elton John's "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road"

The Who's "Tommy"

Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" (and yes, I've synched it up with "The Wizard of Oz" for a fun treat)

"Aretha Franklin Live at Fillmore West"

Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" (album)

"Montrose" by Montrose

Elmer Bernstein's "To Kill A Mockingbird"

Les Paul/Mary Ford -- "Whispering Hope" and "The World is Waiting for the Sunrise" (songs -- my two earliest memories of music that captured my imagination).

...a few of my favorite things....

DR Cillaliz - Is your original flight an early morning flight? or later in the day?  And is the weather supposed to be bad early or later in the day?

In any case... I'd say check in again on the weather forecast this afternoon, and decide from there.

I'm in the "getting close to" stage, of having a new plasma HDTV, as I have it ordered and I think I will get it around the first of next week.  It was only through the very kind help of a friend "in the business" that I can take my budget that was for about a 37" or 40" screen, and instead have been able to buy the Samsung 50" plasma.  I'm really looking forward to it, and have already upgraded my cable service to digital HD.

I'm going to do some work to a plain flat wall, so that the new screen is in a rather theatrical setting.  Here is a picture of the wall right now, before we make some modifications to it.......

Yeah, I'm thinking right now that I'll wait. It's close to being within what I'd be willing to pay, but a little outside the comfort zone.   They did tell me to check back to night and tomorrow morning to see if there is a weather waiver.   So I may just check tonight and go to Omaha in the morning to see if there's any change or if there is a waiver and I can get on the flight tomorrow.

Eugene Ormandy conducting The Moldau - those who've read Kritzerland will know of the impact this recording had on me - sadly, still unavailable on CD as far as I know.

Hmm...  I thought this rang a bell, and after a Google search, an e-mail to a friend, and a phone call*...

Have you seen this?

BMG Japan's Eugene Ormandy & The Philadelphia Orchestra Centenary Edition:  Volumes 1-15 (http://www.eugeneormandy.com/ormandyjapan.htm)

See "Volume 6"

*A friend of mine who is a theatre director and part-time classical music reviewer for the Washington Post is a major admirer of Ormandy, and he has every recording - LPs and CDs and cassettes - in his library.  -And, trust me, it's quite the library!  ("Oh, you need a recording of Cosi fan tutte?  Well, let me loan you three of them for comparison's sake." -Out of the 28 that he has!).  In any case, I just gave him a call, and he tipped me off the above site.

Alas, they have a link to Tower Records Japan, so, I'm not sure if you can still get them from there - although TowerRecords.com (US) still seems to be active.  But you never know.

DR JRand. DR Ron has comented on some of your points and let me do the same.

1. My DVD's using my "S" cable will be in HD if they have been manufactured that way.

You will not want to use an S-video cable with your DVD player. It's not the best resolution possible, and if you're going to go the HDTV route, you want to feed your TV the best signals possible. For most folks, that will be the component cables (three RCA coded red-blue-green on your DVD player and on the back of your new TV. Most old 4:3 TVs don't have the component jacks and that's why you were using s-video.

2. My cable runs through my VCR but I do not have HD cable anyway.  Do these TV's have an RCA connection so that I can connect my VCR?

Yes, they do have numerous inputs. Before you buy any set, you need to ascertain what equipment you're going to hook up to the TV and which jacks each piece of your equipment will use. Make sure the TV you buy has MORE jacks than you need. You want to make sure that as technology advances, your TV will be able to handle it.

3. My 5.1 Surround is a separate device that runs from my VCR and my DVD player.

For most people who have what we call "home theater," this is the norm. You can choose to feed sound to your TV or not, but a new TV won't affect your present 5.1 surround set-up at all.

4. Can I watch HDTV from my local stations over the air, will I need an antenna?

You will be able to get HDTV over the air if your TV comes equipped with a ATSC tuner (that's the kind of tuner that picks up the digital high def signals over the air). Most new TVs comes with this built in now, but you have to be careful when you buy that it has this as some companies put out high def monitors which don't have the built in ATSC tuner.

Normal TV we have now requires an NSTC tuner, but all TVs that I know about have those. It's the ATSC (sometimes written as ASTC/QAM) that provides over-the-air high def.

Yes, you will need an antenna. If you live relatively near the towers that service your area (say 25 miles or so), indoor rabbit ears should do the job nicely. You don't need to by $100 HDTV indoor antennas that some places sell. $10 rabbit ears from Wal-Mart work just fine if you're within a reasonable distance of the towers. If not, you may need an outdoor antenna.

I liked THE PRESTIGE a lot, but it went from being a dramatic mystery of sorts into the realm of science fiction rather jarringly, and I liked it just a tiny bit less because of that. It seemed very realistic at the beginning, and if Nolan could have maintained the reality of the story (which was REALLY interesting), I would have thought it one of the year's best films. With the left turn it took about 3/4 of the way through, I couldn't embrace it totally enthusiastically.

Still, I bought it on Blu-ray because I admired both leading actors very much and knew it would look stunning in high def. Every review I've read of the Blu-ray version has said it's the new reference disc for the format.

That is absolutely correct, but most people don't (yet) have devices that have an HDMI connection, so that's why I didn't mention it. I was assuming JRand had a DVD player that had only component outputs.

I currently have four devices that use HDMI: two upcomverting DVD players, my HD cable box, and my Blu-ray player, and I use an HDMI switcher so I can have them all hooked up at once.

Beautiful fixtures, Music Guy! They would look right at home in the Fox Theatre.

I have never been in the Wiltern, but I usually stay down the street from it and salivate every time I drive by because I want to go in! Maybe when we come to LA in April we can sneak a peek, or perhaps someone will be playing there that we'd like to see!

There's another building that intrigues me on Wilshire, on the south side of the street near Rossmore. I can't even remember what it is, a theatre or a church, but since I'll be staying at my favorite cheap hotel near there I will have to check it out again.

Been listening to the new cast recording of Company and while I still find the concept ridiculous, it actually seems to work with the show, at least on CD.  Musically, it's not as dramatic as Sweeney Todd so you don't really miss that with this recording like you did with Sweeney.  However, I still think the concept is stupid :P

As for the Topic of the Day...

In no particular order, chronological or otherwise...

Vladimir Horowitz playing Liszt, including the Second Hungarian Rhapsody.  "That's too fast." ;)

Pippin - OCR

A Chorus Line - OCR  "Is he really singing, "Shit"?!?!?"  -Of course, I didn't realize that until I was playing the cassette in the car... while my mother was driving... Oh...

Company - OCR - I only ever had it on cassette, not on LP.  That shade of purple is indelibly burned in my consciousness.  -Or something like that.  *And I do miss those "harpsichord/organ" glissandos in "Sorry, Grateful".

Steve Reich "Six Pianos", George Crumb "Makrokosmos, No. 1" - Interesting, very interesting.

Working - OCR - I used to sing "The Mason's Song" for auditions.

Billy Joel's "An Innocent Man" - An album I still practically know forwards and backwards.

DR Matt mentioned something very important, for anyone upgrading their TV and associated things.

Without going all the way to the expense of a Blu-Ray or other genuine "Hi-Def" DVD player.... make sure to at least get a DVD player that has what is called an "upconvert" feature.  It really does improve the visual quality of standard DVDs, by creating more lines of resolution to send to the screen.

My new combo VHS/DVD player/recorder, has the upconvert feature, and also allows very easy recording/dubbing between DVD and VHS in either direction.  And it was only about $250 bucks.

Nowhere near "one large" in Soprano's language !

DR MUSIC GUY - location location location....and it looks perfect.

DR RLP - I thought everyone had read this.

http://www.horror-wood.com/allison.htm

Of course the Coroner's Report had additional material.  My major complaint about the hospital on the day Allison died....she was there for a transfusion, something she had done several times....she complained she was chilled.  They stopped the treatment and left her alone until about 11:15 pm (more than six hours later) - discovered her "unresponsive except to pain" and shipped her miles away to the San Diego Medical Center - her doctor didn't even know she was being treated - and she got there at 3:15 a.m. and died about three hours later.  I think the transfusion was bungled, the coroner's report seems to indicate that, but NOTHING was done.  Her mother was notified - even though she was waiting at home with no car and no way to contact the doctor - that she was dead by a doctor in San Diego.

Somehow through a card in her purse, her priest was notified and she was given the rites of the sick - my guess is she couldn't be given last Catholic rites because she couldn't speak to the priest and answer the questions.

It's opening April 6th. The only way it will still be showing is if we get A LOT of people out to it on its opening weekend. That's when they make the decision whether to hold it over or not. (HINT, HINT!)

It's showing at the Laemmle Music Hall in Beverly Hills.

If anyone happened to want to see another film that was playing there, say, a blockbuster like Babel, well, if they accidentally bought a ticket for our film instead, I wouldn't complain! (Same with the Quads in NY.)

BTW, I only suggest this when a person wants to see a blockbuster that you already know is going to turn a hefty profit and doesn't need your ticket money to survive!

Just in case anyone here was interested, LEGALLY BLONDE has a confusing Ticketmaster discount code situation for its previews.  The code is VISA, which implies that you must use a visa card to use the code, but they're actually allowing you to use any credit card once you get apst the discount code entry screen.  As Jose suggested, the really best seats are still being held back because they're expecting strong premium business on this one.  But they're still selling the lesser $110 seats for $60 plus the nominal (ahem. yeah right) Ticketdisaster service charges.

I think doing a show once this way is an interesting experiment, but doing another by the same composer immediately afterwards is running a franchise.  Why not set every Chekhov on a preppy Long Island estate and every Shakespeare in the 1930's?

That being said, I have to say that this COMPANY is a gloriously sounding recording.  Everyone sings beautifully--no "PTA show" voices at all.  And I like the new orchestrations a lot.  A few things that I'm not crazy about:  no "Tick Tock" and no reprise of the title song at the end of the show, a wee bit too much dialogue for my tastes, and I don't agree with many of Raul Esparza's vocal choices.  But otherwise, this is a wonderful and invigorating recording of a show that was beginning to feel dated.

DR MattH, you commented last night: "I wish Matt and H.R.G. could have worked together longer. They made a good team."

That's exactly the set-up Eric Roberts' character established.  I fully expect HRG and Matt to be teamed up.

I don't know how much memory the Haitian was going to remove from HRG (possibly just the fact that they planned Claire's getaway), but I expect HRG will continue to work at the "paper factory"...and Matt's talents will surely be used.

It certainly won't do for HRG to have his memory erased about Claire.  His wife and son will remember, as will Matt.

I do enjoy seeing various stories on the same show. But i did think it was good for them to focus on claire. It can sometimes be difficult to follow when they switch back and forth between so many stories.

I must be lame, but i totally did not see claire having to leave.

And how cute was little hiro!

I can't wait till claire meets her uncle again. I loved those two together.

I'm of the opinion, this morning, that Hiro's father did not know his son had any ability until recently.  Still, he made no "move" to bring his son "in" the way he expects his employees to bring in the other folks with special abilities.

Hiro, however, would not be easily "brought in" since he can will himself to be somewhere else.

Was that Wireless Girl who was doing some kind of brain scan on Matt at the paper factory?  It seemed strange that she would set up the invasion on HRG's home and actually work for him, too.  What's her game?

I'm glad that they've established George Takei as more than just Hiro's father.  What's his game?

Thanks for the explanation and the Link, JRand.

I had no idea she had been through all of that.

Her mother being in an "unmarked grave" nearby...is that because Allison is buried where her mother would have been....and the other plot isn't part of the one with the stone?

That's my guess.  Allison's death was rather unexpected, and I am thinking that her mom wasn't really prepared for it.  So Allison is buried next to her father who had passed away in 1959.  Her Mom died 8 months later, and though there were three sons from his first marriage, my guess is none of them were interested in making arrangements for the step mother.  She died without a will, so she wasn't interested in seeing them get anything, so the Public Administrator dealt with Charlotte and Allison's assets...which were not considerable.

Could you just walk over to the Palace Theatre box office?  or is the box office not open yet?  In any case...

I remember planning a trip to NYC when I was in college.  I had planned to see a bunch of shows, and after looking at what all the service fees would end up costing me, I eventually decided to take the train up for the day, and buy all my tickets in person at the box office.  -At that time Amtrak was still semi-reasonably priced.  When all was said and done, I only ended spending about $15 more by doing that - and I had a nice day in NYC too!

*The biggest convenience, however, was not having to deal with all the phone reps who would always say "These are really good seats."   Not.

This is all because Richard and I want to fly from Cincinnati (CVG) to DCA on June 23, make our way to NYC on June 28, then fly back to CVG from LGA.  I'm trying to decide whether we should take the train from DC to NYC or fly.

Jose - I'm not sure that the box office will accept someone just telling them the discount code verbally, whereas if you order online, the system doesn't "care" that you didn't get an official discount offer.  I did think it was interesting and unusual that the code would be VISA and yet you can use any credit card, though.

AND....

I believe I'm come up with a plan.  Well, another plan.  In regards to the boxes of stuff currently taking up way too much floor space in my room.

I just did a quick look-see through about eight boxes.  There were a few boxes of music xeroxes, but, alas, there were also still a bunch of boxes I ended up labeling as "STUFF".  However, while doing that quick visual inventory, I came across a bunch of old magazines, programs, newspapers, textbooks(?), etc., that I know can go directly to the recycling or trash bins.  So...

My plan for tomorrow - yes, tomorrow - is to go ahead and ditch the obvious stuff, and at least whittle down the contents of said boxes of "STUFF".  And then at a later time, I can be a bit more anal about inventorying and organizing the remaining contents of each box of "STUFF".  -And I'm sure I'll still be going with original plan of going through at least two boxes-o-stuff each day.  I'm just sort of condensing that process... and sort of not.

But, hey, it's a plan.  Well, another plan.

;)

Earlier, I shipped some packages that needed shipping.  I'm just about out of my little CD mailer envelopes so I went to Staples.  They're out of stock again (oh, they have their other kind, the ones with only eight envelopes per package that cost the same as the kind I buy, which have twelve envelopes per package).  This happens way too frequently, so I went to the manager and complained.  He told me it's one guy who refuses to buy online or do orders specifically for himself.  No, he'd rather come in once or twice a week and buy their entire stock, which is what this buttwipe does.  Sixteen, twenty packages at a time, leaving nothing for anyone else.  The manager assured me he'd have more tomorrow and he'll be holding some for me and, once again, speaking to his selfish customer.

The best of audition vibes to Cason...not that he would need them...and what is Mr. Murphy auditioning for?

Back from the ol' audition.  Thank you all for the vibes -- I am thinking that they might have worked...

San Diego Musical Theatre (part of the San Diego Lyric Opera) is putting on The Full Monty in May, so I figured I might as well audition for it, and audition I did.

They asked for a prepared song -- so I went in and did "If You Were Gay" from Avenue Q (getting laughs out of the director), after which, they gave me the sides for the character "Ethan" -- if you are familiar with the show, he is the one who tries the Donald O'Connor run up the wall from Singin' in the Rain.  So I took a minute with the sides while another guy sang and then I went back in to read and gave my best "bad" run up the wall (which I don't think they were expecting, but which they all laughed at) and then took the director's notes and did the scene two more times.

So, if nothing else, I feel like I gave a helluva audition, so I can't blame myself if they don't pick me.  :)

As far as hearing back, I am not sure.  Callbacks would be towards the end of March (and then the rehearsals start for Non-Equity at the top of April), so I'll be sure to keep everyone posted on what I hear...

Most of the air shuttles between DC and NYC (Delta, USAir, etc.) are not first-come, first-served.  You can buy tickets in advance, and the seats are reserved, not "scrambled".

If you go to Delta's website (www.delta.com), and punch in DCA to LGA (or is it JFK) you should get plenty of options for flights.  The ones that leave on the hour are usually the shuttle flights.  And, yes, you can check a bag, but I think it's restricted to just one per passenger.

*Unless you can get some sort of deal by booking all your flight segments on Delta or some other airline, I'd also check out the JetBlue flights from Dulles (IAD) to JFK.  They're still offering some crazy-low fares depending on the day of the week and time.  -I may just fly down to Richmond for $29 this weekend.  -And if your hotel has a deal with Washington Flyer, the trip out to Dulles may only cost you $10 from DC.

Jim is a "him".  Faith is a "her", as is Megan.  Although, Megan is currently working in Wichita, so her current 'stand-in' is "Jamie-Lynn".

Alas, I don't believe any of them deals.

*And Faith did make it back from Boston safe and sound the other night.  Alas, her camera was stolen out her bag by one of the baggage handlers at the airport.  And, of course, the airline does not have to reimburse her in any way, shape or form.  "It happens."  :-\

It also looks like they're setting up David Caruso to get a new love interest, his second much younger Latina in as many seasons. HIs first wife was murdered near the end of last season. (The actress now appears as an assistant ADA on LAW & ORDER.)

In dubious honor of the scary stock market drop, and also in honor of the hee-hah discussion :) , here's an old song from HOW NOW DOW JONES:

Will everyone here kindly step to the rear and let a winner lead the way!
Here's where we separate the notes from the noise,
the men from the boys, the rose from the poison ivy.

Back in the bunch, I came up with a hunch, this was your up and at 'em day.
It's one of those spells, when you hear the right bells,
and your horoscope tells you to say,
"Will everyone here kindly step to the rear and let a winner lead the way!"

Next, I watched the Disney animated feature from early last year THE WILD. It was wildly unpopular, and I can see why: a negligible story (that borrowed greatly from MADAGASCAR without any of the fun) and not the greatest CGI animation. It was very colorful (I'm sure the Blu-ray disc looked great; I DVRd it off Starz!), and had some great voices: Kiefer Sutherland, Jim Belushi, Eddie Izzard, Janenne Garaffolo, William Shatner, Patrick Warburton.

But the humor was scant and, as I said, the story just really lacking. I can see why OVER THE HEDGE, which came out around the same time, was so much more successful.

A commentator on CNN is suggesting it might be a "healthy pullback" of Dow gains that might not have made sense in the first place.

Yes, they're saying it's a much-needed "correction"....and what's more....it's too early to tell if a more "severe correction" might transpire.

It also looks like they're setting up David Caruso to get a new love interest, his second much younger Latina in as many seasons. HIs first wife was murdered near the end of last season. (The actress now appears as an assistant ADA on LAW & ORDER.)

[whisper] Does David know she's alive and in another series?

I'ver read a transcript of a Warner Brothers chat at Home Theater Forum.

They talk a lot about DVD titles upcoming.  This includes their plans to re-do "The Music Man" in high def!!!

At any rate, there is a Judy Garland-Mickey Rooney box due this summer with "a lot of extras."

I wish we were getting an "Andy Hardy" box, but perhaps in time....

Well, I can't bring myself to pay the outrageous rates it would cost to change my ticket so I have a new plan.  I will drive to Omaha tomorrow, get up VERY early and try to get on the 6:55 AM flight standby.  It's full, but maybe the weather will prevent people from getting there. If not I'll just hope for the best on my flight.

That is unless I find something more reasonably priced later tonight, but I'm doubtful.

So tonight I must pack in as compact a way as possible so I can take only a carry on and be able to fly standby.  If I make it on the two flights I'm hoping to get I would be in NYC by 12:30 rather than 4:00. That would be worth getting up early.

I'm happy to announce that David Shire At The Movies, Kritzerland's first limited edition CD, is now up for preorder.  We should have copies in about two weeks.  I would order sooner than later - limited editions of film-related music don't seem to last that long these days, and this one is limited to only 1200 copies, several hundred of which will go to online specialty shops.  The CD is worth it for the four Maureen McGovern tracks alone.

Well after getting almost nothing done but fretting about all this all day, I have finally grabbed the brass ring.   I got someone at American who said Omaha wasn't in the weather waiver, but Chicago is for Thursday and I'm going through Chicago so there is no change fee!!!

So I will drive to Omaha tonight and catch a flight to LaGuardia via Dallas at 8:20 AM.  Don't know if it will go, but that leaves me all day to try to get there if it doesn't and I'm not going through Chicago. This is great news.  I better get busy, I have hotel reservations to change, people to call, packing to do and a drive to make

If this flight goes as planned I'll be at LaGuardia at 3:30 Pm tomorrow.  Woo Hoo! An extra day in NYC for the price of a hotel room. Suddenly that seems cheap

I'm no expert, DR JRand, but I don't think that's necessary.  But what I remember from Comcast's menu, you not only have to subscribe to digital service, but to HD feed as well.  That's where it starts to get pricey.

Hmmm...I just checked Comcast's website.  HD is only $5.00 additional a month.  That's not too bad.  The digital service is $68.90--I'm now paying 54.95 for just basic cable.

Off to do a few evening errands, and then I think I'll watch "Little Miss Sunshine" later this evening on DVD.  I rented it, mainly because I'm a big Alan Arkin fan and I've heard that the movie is quirky and good.

Last evening, I watched a little low-budget crime/police thriller entitled "Open Cam."  It is definitely a "niche audience" film, as it is a pretty expected plot of a crime movie:  some unknown murders, all of the people murdered went to bed with the main character, and the policeman assigned to protect and act as a decoy to the main character also falls in love and has and affair.  Except all of these roles are guys, and it is in the Washington D.C. area.

It is above average for these kinds of low budget things, ...HOWEVER..., the cast is very good looking (if you like that sort of thing), and the torrid scenes would raise the question as to whether they would belong in Dear Elmore's DVD player, OR, in his infamouse VCR !!

Congrats to DR Cason.... We'll hold good thoughts for a call-back for you.  I'm sure you wouldn't mind being down in the San Diaego area for a little while.  I really like that city.

I played Candyland for the first time in a long time. I used to play with the four-year-olds twice a week, but since my class has gotten so many new kids, I couldn't leave. But a bunch of kids were absent today, so there were only seven in my class.

Okay, I give up.  How do I put a song on my MySpace page?

If you haven't figured it out yet, go up to the top of the page where there are the links to "Home," "Search," Browse," etc.  -- you should see one towards the end that says "Music."  Click on that baby and you go to the search page for music.  You can type in the name of the band you are looking for and then browse through the band profiles that come up and look for the song you want.

But, be warned, not all bands/singers are up - and even if they are, the song you are looking for may not be up on their page (each profile is limited to 4 songs).

If you happen to find the band and the song, in their player, it should give the option to "Add" and you can have it on your profile.

Got all that?  ::)

Hello! I'm in Omaha. It was an uneventful trip, which is fine with me.   The Sleep Inn is very full tonight.  I had to take a smoking room, which stinks as smoking rooms do, but it has a bed and I will be able to easily get to the airport tomorrow.

I've heard flights tomorrow to Detroit and other points north are already cancelled. I was thinking it's crazy to go to New York via Dallas, but now I'm thinking it's probably a good idea.  Besides, that should be a long enough flight to get a movie!

Thanks FJL and thank you all for your patience while I fretted about this today.   I need to email the people at work. I bugged them more about this than I've bugged them in a long time.

Since my boss cancelled his trip, I've decided to wait a little longer to tell him.   He sent me an email telling me to have an excellent trip, so that's cool.

If I subscribe to digital cable - do ALL the tv's in my house have to be HD to get the premium channels?

Define premium channels. Do you mean the HD channels or channels like HBO, Showtime, etc.

Digital cable is not all high def. No, any TV can get digital cable channels, but only an HDTV can pick up HDTV channels in HD. On a regular TV, HDTV channels would be vacant.

That's not quite true. I can watch the HD channels on my regular tv because my DVR is the same thing they give you to pick up HD on cable. OF course it isn't HD on my tv, but the channels aren't blank

Well, I'm going home.  But first, I want to go to Target and get some kitty treats.  There are three different kinds of the same brand (I forget the name), but Fred Meyer only has two of the kinds.  My cat doesn't really like other brands that I've tried (especially Pounce), but she loves these...whatever they are...but I know what they look like. ;)

You know, topics o' the day are very difficult to come up with after six years.  So, when we hit an interesting one and we get so few people addressing it, it makes me just want to stop with the topics.  Not trying to be persnickety, but this one was genuinely interesting, I think.

AMERICAN IDOL featured the men again tonight, and there was a one hundred per cent improvement in singing and performance tonight. Yes, there were still some weak contestants, but the strong continued their winning ways, and several like SUndance Head stepped up to the plate and knocked it out of the park.

I thought Brandon's "Time After Time" and Sanjaya's "Steppin' Out with My Baby" were the weakest by far. Nick wasn't far behind with "Fever" and A.J.'s "Feelin' Good" also was up and down.

But Phil, both Chrises, Blake, and Sundance brought their "A" games tonight and did very, very well.

An album that hasn't changed my life, because I only just got it, is an album of the songs from the Broadway musical SKYSCRAPER performed by the Hollyridge Singers, a kind of Capitol Records house group. They sound great. This is my first exposure to SKYSCRAPER, and I'm quite enjoying it. I picked it up for a buck still wrapped in plastique.

I watched the new game show that came on after IDOL, and no dumber people have I ever seen than those two contestants. The man was a UCLA graduate and didn't know what month Columbus Day occurs in? Painful. I wouldn't have watched, but that was 30 minute that I couldn't watch what I had been recording since it wouldn't finish before DIRT came on.

DIRT had a good episode involving a hostage situation at the magazine's officers when a former child star (obviously modeled on Danny Bonaduce) holds up with a bomb strapped to him and a gun pointed at the editor. Some really surprising developments during the hour.

Sleep Inns still exist? Is that the one that had the little sleepwalking bear as its mascot? When I worked at a Best Western in San Jose, it had been a Sleep Inn years prior and that little bear was still on some of the shower tiles.

You know, if we don't slack off tomorrow and really send February out with a bang, we have the chance to have broken every possible record since this board began.  We've already broken every record but one, despite the fact that this stupid month is two to three days shorter than any other month.  But, the one record we have never been able to best is "hits" - our all time high of "hits" in one month is 126,000 and change.  Last month, which was formerly our best month ever, we actually only got to 113,000 and change.  But, this month, we're really within spitting distance of making a new "hit" record and I say, pull it together, hainsies/kimlets and let's go for a gold record!

Today's topic was a good one so don't give up on us yet, Great Global Moderator.

The Monkees in 6th grade (they were all the rage that year)
The soundtrack for "Romeo and Juliet" in junior high school ( that "What Is A Youth" so romantic to an impressionable youngster back then -- still pretty romantic) and Paul Revere and the Raiders
High School -- I loved The Guess Who, The Trogs, Elton John's Madman Across the Water and his first albumn with Your Song, Bob Dylan's Nashville Skyline, Cat Stevens, and of course  Van "the Man"  Morrison (Gloria and Brown-Eyed Girl) and his Tupelo Honey albumn and all his albumns hence...oh, and I remember Jesus Christ Superstar came out then and made a big splash, especially among the "Jesus Freaks" (I think that's what the term was for the Jesus/hippy combo folks)
College: Lynard Skynard, the Doobie Brothers, Ray Wylie Hubbard, and Willie, Wayland and the rest of the Outlaws (I was in Texas, so those guys were hot) and Van Morrison

To this day Van Morrison is my fav -- so the Tupelo Honey albumn would be the life changer I suppose because my two most favorite songs are on it -- Tupelo Honey (sexy/romantic slow dance to that one) and Wild Night (I just have to get up and dance around the room to that one whenever I hear it)

I thought David Clayton Thomas's voice was wonderful. He does a great version of Hernado's Hideaway on one of his solo albums. I always preferred Blood Sweat & tears to Chicago.  The B S T  version of "And When I Die" is IMHO one of the truly great pop performances of that era.

The first B S & T album included a version of Randy Newman's "Just One Smile".  I knew the song from an ealier Gene Pitney version. I don't think I really "discovered" Randy Newman's work until he teamed up with Paul Simon much later.

I loved that Reggae influence in pop - Paul Simon, Eric Clapton, Steve Wonder, Elton John, Paul McCartney etc were all willing to take it on board.

Graceland's other songs seem to have always overshadowed the beautiful "Under African Skies".

But of course I'm rarely disappointed in any of Linda Ronstadt's work.

Miss Karen, the key question is - have you registered at amazon.  If you haven't, you will never be able to leave a review.  If you go to the amazon.com home page, you'll see it says "Welcome customer" towards the top - and then next to that it should have a place where it says something about registering.

Oh, I guess I should do that for you.  However...

If you plan to re-burn, re-copy the song, you may find that the iTunes "encoding" may prevent such a thing from happening.  I think.  -Which is why I was asking if you were using iTunes.  *And I looked at burning the iTunes file as an MP3, but there's a built-in block that prevents me from doing that.  I'm sure there's a workaround, but I have come across it yet.  In any case...

I shall commence burning Melissa Etheridge and Chris Cornell shortly.

Well, it's not really an iPod issue.  *And you can have iTunes without having an iPod.  It's more of a sharing issue.  iTunes encodes the music purchased from the iTunes store.  Any purchase is basically only meant for the person who originally purchased said song(s).  I can burn a CD for you with the two songs.  However, if you wish to incorporate those tunes into another compilation, then that's where the problem may arise.  But, again, I'm not really sure about all the workings of iTunes, so... You'll at least have the songs.  They just may only 'work' on the CD I send you.

DR Cillaliz - Count me in as another Nanci Griffith fan.  When I first got her "Other Voices, Other Rooms" album, I played it almost continuously for weeks.  -Yes, it was basically an album of covers, but her renditions were so honest and aching.  "Tecumseh Valley" still destroys me.  And "Speed of the Sound of Loneliness" is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard.  And her original rendition of Julie Gold's "From A Distance" will never replace nor outshine Bette Midler's pop treatment of the song.

*And she puts on one helluva live show too!

**Which reminds me, I still have yet to listen to her latest torch song album which I bought a few months ago.

Ohhh... I'm such a sap... -As my eyes start to tear up...

Southbound Train
(Julie Gold)

I'm sitting on a southbound train
Staring at the sky
I'm thinking of my childhood
And I'm trying not to cry
While a stranger sleeps against me
And it feels like I'm his wife
Towns and cities flutter past
Like the pages of my life
My heart is on the baggage rack
It's heavy as can be
I wish that I could find someone
Who would carry it for me
Just to pay it some attention
And to handle it with care
Because it has been dropped
And is in need of some repair

(chorus)
Some things I know
Some things I guess
Some things I wish that I could learn
To express
Like the way that I feel
As I stare at the sky
And I remember your voice
And the sound... of goodbye

Maybe it's the autumn chill
Maybe it's the rain
Maybe I should wake the stranger
And ask him his name
But, my eyes they would betray me
And my words could not defend
No, I must learn to wait my turn
Before I love again

(chorus)

And I guess this sort of fits in with today's Topic of the Day...  And I think I've told this "story" before...

I've always loved Sunday in the Park with George.  -(Especially the second act.)  When I first got the record, I played it over and over.  I was just fascinated by the sound of it all.  And I believe the CD for the show was one of the first if not the first CD I ever bought.

When the vocal selections came out, I loved - and still do - playing "Finishing the Hat".  Such a wonderful key - G-flat - lots of black notes.  And it fits so wonderfully under the fingers.  And such a great lyric.  Of course, I was in high school at the time, so I never really had an idea of just how great a lyric it was/is.  *And I remember playing it for my friend, Tim Doyle, for one of this school functions... Ah... :)

So... Fast forward a couple of years... I was a part of the Kennedy Center's Sondheim Celebration in 2002.  I was one of the rehearsal pianists for Sweeney Todd (the opening production of the festival), and A Little Night Music (the closing production).  Needless to say, it was all quite a heady and exciting time - a true beyond my wildest dreams experience.  However, I'd have to say the most moving and memorable experience that summer was when I was an audience member.

That summer, unfortunately, also happened to be when Steve and I "broke up".  I was a couple of weeks into rehearsals when we had "the talk".  It was all very amicable and adult, but, still, after being together for three and half years, it hurt.  A lot.  Thankfully, luckily, I had my work to keep me busy, to keep me happy.  -And in retrospect to keep me "distracted".

So... As I was sitting in the audience watching Sunday in the Park with George, I began to feel as if I was watching my life at that time.  And when Raul Esparza started singing "Finishing the Hat" - well, actually when that first chord of the intro was hit...

Yes, she looks for me... Good
Let her look for me
To tell me why she left me...

I started crying.  Sobbing actually.  I finally got what the song was about.  What the show was about.  *And I was also lucky that my friend, Michael, happened to have some Kleenex with him - I practically did not stop crying for the duration of the show.

So, I guess that was sort of delayed life-changing moment.

*And to bring this long post to a close - and a happy ending - Steve and I continued to stay in touch, and stay close.  In fact, I feel we are better friends now than when were "together".  We're still "together", just not in that way. ;)

**And as another friend of mine pointed out, Steve took care of me that summer.  He knew I had work, he knew I had a distraction when we had "the talk".

If you love someone, set them free.

You know, topics o' the day are very difficult to come up with after six years.  So, when we hit an interesting one and we get so few people addressing it, it makes me just want to stop with the topics.  Not trying to be persnickety, but this one was genuinely interesting, I think.

When I was in eighth grade, I had to do a report on geothermal energy.  I went to the library and got a couple of books that seemed like they would work and I went to look at the records...yes, records.  I picked out a couple that I had never heard of but I liked the covers.  It turns out that they were musicals:  Ain't Misbehavin' and Sweeney Todd.  I had never specifically listened to any musical before (on my own), except for the movie soundtrack to "The Sound of Music" that my parents owned.  So, I listened to these records as I wrote my report.  I LOVED Ain't Misbehavin' and had to have it.  Sweeney Todd...not so much.  I started listening to musicals after that and totally fell in love with them.  I didn't really pay attention to who wrote them and I didn't remember who wrote Sweeney Todd.  As I got to know musicals (mostly Andrew Lloyd Webber shows because of friends of mine), I did start to pay attention to composers and noticed that I really started to gravitate towards one composer/lyricist more than any other (and more than Lloyd Webber).  It was Mr. Sondheim.  I then realized that he wrote Sweeney Todd!  When I was older (high school age) I was able to more fully appreciate the work of art that it was (and is).

Around this time, I found out that he wrote Forum.  When my sister and I were kids, the movie version used to come on TV all the time and we'd watch it any chance we got.  To our elementary school aged minds, it was hysterical.  When I rediscovered it as a high school student, I realized how different the stage score was from the movie...and how much better it was...and how much more of it there was.  I was totally hooked on musicals and my absolute favorite composer/lyricist was and still is Sondheim.  So, Ain't Misbehavin' and Sweeney Todd really set me on the course of my life.

Around the time I started high school, I also discovered The Manhattan Transfer.  In high school choir, we sang a LOT of their songs.  I think the first album of theirs that I got was "The Best of The Manhattan Transfer."  If I remember, my parents bought me the album because we sang their songs in choir.  For some reason, I loved them as much as I loved musicals.  Still do. :)
