Well, you've read the notes, the notes were sure and begorrah, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're at the pub singing When Irish Eyes Are Mooing.

TOTD. I don't celebrate St Pat's day. It's not really acknowledged much here and baseball is very much a minor sport in OZ. I'd rather watch croquet!

There were so many potent alignments yesterday that it is important to consider how many of them will be influencing humanity today. The Moon shift into Pisces last night adds a gentle touch to today's proceedings. Be more compassionate and empathic to the truly needy. Weather permitting, water sports may be back in style during the entire weekend. Antique hunters and treasure seekers can be in their glory since the Jupiter-Saturn, Mercury-Pluto and Venus-Pluto powerhouse aspects from Friday are still glowing like hot coals. Recall that the Jupiter-Saturn trine in fire signs can serve as a launching pad for reaching your educational and career goals. A big event this afternoon is Venus entering its earthy home sign of Taurus (3:02PM PDT) until April 11. Venus in Taurus is a boost for planting, gardening, nature excursions, cooking, baking, business matters and real-estate interests. Be prepared for surprises and shock waves on the romantic front this evening as Venus in Aries makes a frictional 45-degree sky pattern with Uranus in Pisces (10:58PM PDT). This mischief-making between Venus and Uranus occurs just 29 minutes before the monthly Moon-Uranus union in Pisces (11:27PM PDT). If love ties are a bit shaky right now, you may want to utilize the late-evening hours for scientific, metaphysical and astrological studies. Learn more about the lost continent of Atlantis, The Great Pyramid, Stonehenge and the enigmas of the ancient world. A mineral bath or whirlpool treatment can soothe tired muscles and nerves.

As for the Topic of the Day...

The only thing interesting I remember doing for St. Patrick's Day was making sure I wore something green to school (high school) so that I wouldn't have to wear my uniform.  -I went to a private, Catholic high school.  Thankfully, the bit of green was covered by the "tag" you bought from the Key Club or some other school service organization who sold them for a $1.00 as a fundraiser.  We couldn't dress down completely, but we did get a break from the blue and gray woolens for the day.

I saw that SEESAW tour and liked Lucie Arnaz.....Tommy Tune not so much....and John Gavin quite a bit.

The tour was somewhat different from Broadway show. The songs Spanglish & Ride Out the Storm were dropped. They really had nothing to do with the show as they were written especially for the performers (Bennett protegees at the time) I have the broadway script and the scenes can be easily dropped without ruining the flow of the plot.

Also a new song was written for Lucie Arnez called The Party's One Me which was written as the act one finale.

It is said to be the last lyric that Dorothy Fields ever wrote.

I have never heard the song performed and as far as I know it only has been recorded once on the album Cy Coleman: The Party's On Me and sung by Laurie Beechman, Patti Austin and others.

BK Recorded the dropped song Big Fat Heart on Lost In Boston 3 and on Sally Mayes Dorothy Fields Album they recorded Tutu and Tights.

The cut song More People Like You was recorded on An Evening With Dorothy Fields

One more thing:
The song Poor Everyone Else was a trunk song. It was originally written for Sweet Charity.

Where else can you learn onformation like this but here!

Good morning, all!  Happy St Patrick's Day.  I'm sure that our E&T DR DakotaCelt and her coven are all a-tizzie today.

In 1974, I drove in to New York with two friends to see the revival of CANDIDE that just opened at the Broadway Theatre.  We spent a part of Saturday at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and got caught in the St Patrick's Day parade as we scrambled for a taxi to get to the matinee of PIPPIN.  And that's my only memory of St Patrick's Day, except for the gay protests in front of St Patrick's cathedral.

DR Jose, what are the dates for "Earnest In Love"?

I will also pipe in about the notes posted last night.

Yes I believe that Mr. Cason Murphy does have a future and I hope to get house seats from him for many years to come.

Egbert who played the Brain loved his voice and he can have a career as a Voice Over artist.

The General was, at least at the performance I saw,  the most undisciplined actor I ever saw on stage. He killed so many of the jokes. And had a hard time understand what he was saying and he had a microphone! he raced through his dialogue!

And yes the actor who played Private Parts stole the stage every time he was onstage with the General. He had no dialogue but stole the spot light from the actor.

And one of the actors from the show stated that he might have been having a shot or too many before the show.

Top o' the (still) Mornin'! I didn't get much sleep but I feel rested for the moment. That will probably vanish in a few minutes and I'll go back to bed.

Top(ic) o' the Day: My favorite St. Patrick's Day was about 20 years ago. One of my best friends was a runner and I was a very sporadic jogger. Murphy's, an Atlanta instituiton with Irish roots, was sponsoring a 5K. I figured I could do that, even if I ended up walking at the end. We ran through lovely neighborhoods in Virginia-Highlands. I made really great time (for me) and was proud to have made it through without having to walk. (It was very hilly terrain.)

Another runner there was a friend of my girlfriend, (a redhead named Siobhan---how Irish is THAT!) and he invited us over to cook brunch for us. We had broccoli diced up into scrambled eggs, making them kind of green and St. Patrick-y. But the memorable brunch ingredient was the friend he had invited who had also just run the race.

The first guy had been interested in dating my friend, but since she wasn't interested in anything more than friendship with him, he invited his friend---Sean Kelly (how Irish is THAT!) whom he thought might be someone she would like.

The four of us went out boulder scrambling...they loaned me a pair of those sticky rock climbing shoes, but I didn't really see the appeal. But I did enjoy watching the immediate chemistry these two had and felt that history was in the making.

That night, I had gotten tickets for us to go to see one of my favorite Irish bands, Patrick Street, with Kevin Burke--my favorite Irish musician. We had gone together to see them many times in the past. Sean joined us, (it turned out he was a musician who used to play in a band with some friends of mine from high school) and it was a terrific concert.

Afterwards, I introduced my two friends to Kevin. "This is my friend Siobhan and her future husband, Sean".  They both looked at me like I was insane.

A few years later, I was her Maid of Honor at a beautiful wedding under the Wyoming skies with the Wind River Mountains in the background. (Both being outdoorsy types, they had moved there the year before.)

I am happy to have been there when the sparks flew! A Happy St. Patrick's Day, indeed!

TOD - the only St. Patrick's Day I remember distinctly was 1973, the year I was in grad school at Michigan.  We had a late winter blizzard that paralyzed Ann Arbor and freaked out my good friend and her husband, Californians who had come to the midwest for that one year of school and went back to CA just as soon as their degrees were complete.  I'll see her this summer in DC and will ask if she remembers that snowstorm.

And while the actors are working out some choreography...

While walking through the hallways here yesterday, there was one girl I just wanted to slap across the face...

Oh!  Hey what are you doing here?
-Her friend points to the sign on the door: Jersey Boys
OH!!!  That's so cool, I'm so happy for you!
-Thanks.  Yeah, this is my final callback... I really need to focus right now.
Oh, I totally understand (she gives him a big hug)...
-Thanks... I really need to focus...
Hey, Sabrina... Look who's here?!?!?  -Michael is about to go into his Jersey Boys callback... Isn't that so cool!!
-Michael finally starts to walk away...
Hey!  I really hope your audition goes well.. That really is soooo cool...

-And that was about the point where I wanted to slap her across the face... Leave Him Alone, Bi-Yatch!.   Alas, I had to get back to my rehearsal... Talk about a missed opportunity.  ;D

Good Morning, DR MusicGuy!

So... You did not answer my query from last night...

Where are we staying when during your visit to New York City?

;)

Good morning dear studly and pixie-like Jose..... you temptress!   I'm not sure about hotel location yet, but I was thinking of coming in to NYC on Monday the 25th of June, and maybe spending about 3 days or so.  I have a few friends spread all over Manhattan, from down in the Village to up north of Harlem, so I get my choice of the city top to bottom.  I think you are currently up north....are you above 125th street?

Also, Fred had asked about the dates, so once again, I think arrive on June 25th.  I was really sorry that Fred and Skip had their trip to L.A. get screwed up, 'cause I was looking forward to meeting them.

And if the Blu-ray of CASINO ROYALE comes in the mail today as I'm hoping, that's what I'll watch tonight. If not, I'll put in the Blu-ray of A HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY to watch.

I'm gonna pop out for now......it's errand time.  I always kind of cringe today, because it only takes about 10 seconds for me to reach my fill of "bad, amateur, put-on" Irish accents.

But a friend is visiting here in Phoenix at the moment, and he is born in Ireland and then moved here to the U.S..  He was ordering a sandwich the other day from an immigrant Mexican waiter.....talk about a battle of accents, with each person looking at the other as if they were from the moon.  My friend was ordering "a tearckeh kloob" ..... which of course, was a turkey club sandwich.  He did describe his own Irish accent as "sounding like you are shoving a rusty shovel into gravel."

Good day to HHW!

Haven't caught up on the posts yet, but will reply to SINGDAW from yesterday regarding Leonard Bernstein's YOUNG PEOPLE'S CONCERTS:

I'm really enjoying the series. The name of the series is a misnomer--they were designed for kids, of course, but Bernstein assumes a very great deal from such young people. I find that the series works on many levels. I've been listening to classical music for 25 years or more, listen to it daily, etc, and I'm learning a great deal. I usually watch each lecture/concert twice. There's a book, too--did you know that? I haven't seen it, but it's available on Amazon.

And thanks again to DR ELMORE and DR JOSE for recommending the series to me (and to other DRs as well who made such fine recommendations).

Dog Food Recall - Misleading?

The basic recall item (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,259223,00.html) read:
Quote
WASHINGTON —

A major manufacturer of pet foods sold throughout North America under dozens of store names is recalling millions of containers of its products while working to determine what caused kidney failure and some deaths of cats and dogs.

Menu Foods said Saturday it is recalling dog food sold under 46 brands and cat food sold under 37 brands and distributed throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico. The pet foods were sold by major retailers, including Wal-Mart, Kroger and Safeway.

A complete list of the recalled products along with product codes, descriptions and production dates is available from the Menu Foods website, http://www.menufoods.com/recall. Consumers with questions can also call (866) 895-2708.

..

However, further down in the newstory we learn:

Quote
The company said it makes pet food for 17 of the top 20 North American retailers. It is also a contract manufacturer for the top branded pet food companies, including Procter & Gamble Co.

P&G announced Friday the recall of specific 3 oz., 5.5 oz., 6 oz. and 13.2 oz. canned and 3 oz. and 5.3 oz. foil pouch cat and dog wet food products made by Menu Foods but sold under the Iams and Eukanuba brands.

Note: the P&G premium products, Iams and Eukanuba, are NOT listed on the Menu Foods recall site! (Menu foods is not recalling them, P&G is.)

The basic story sure leads consumers to believe that only "STORE BRANDS" are suspect; and the web site in inadequate!

I share your fears. I usually listen to the local classical music station each morning--wherever I'm living. We had a fairly good one here until recently--WGMS-FM--but it is no longer. National Public Radio has converted back to classical as a result, but without as much personality, IMHO. I liked hearing the latest Yoyo Ma and such; radio is a great way to hear new recordings.

BK, NATIONAL PASTIME is not an entirely new play.  I played the role of Branch Rickey in a Tacoma production two years ago, and won Best Actor of the year for it.  If the play is running two and a half hours, now; then Bryan has done a great deal of padding to the two hour play that I did.

One of the faculty members played Branch - he's been an actor for fifty years, lots of TV and stuff, but I would love to have seen what you did, because this gentleman chose to add about five hundred "I means" and "you knows" during the play, which I found actorish and ultimately not very respectful of the writer.

My family immigrated from Ireland. They were actually English, but it's a long story involving Cromwell, and I don't know my history well enough to relate all the details.

My mother did all of our geneology research (she's a librarian, too) and found the name of the street in Ireland where her great-great-great-great(?) grandfather had had his grocery store.

I took her and her partner to Ireland last year, along with a few folks, and spent an extra day and rented a car so we could go to the town of Nenagh and walk down Silver Street.

Even though I'm Irish (with English thrown in as well) I have no memories of Saint Patrick's Day. I don't celebrate it as anything. I don't feel the need to do so.

The idiots in New York who claim to be Irish (many may well be) and use it as an excuse to drink themselves blind drunk and then puke all over the streets are revolting examples of Irish stock and I refuse to partake in the silliness.

Baseball??? As I said regarding camping a few weeks ago, are you crazy???

Actually, it's not as severe as that but I've never played baseball and I have no interest in watching it. Unlike football which I loathe, mainly because it's been turned into some kind of faux religious experience, I don't dislike baseball, I just have no interest in it. I also have no interest in most major sports. Hockey "I went to a fight last night, a hockey game broke out". Basketball, I'm 5' 3" tall now, I was shorter in junior high and high school. I was harassed in gym class because of basketball. I do not care for the game. I do not understand it and I do not care to learn anything more about it.

And that, ladies and germs, is the end of my rant.

I must go to the bank and open my 2006 IRA.

Bk, yes the play had mulitiple-narrations from Red Barber and Wendell Smith (doing the major part), Mrs Rickey, Jackie's mother, his wife, etc.  But since it was done as a memory play starting and ending with the Hall of Fame ceremony; I thought it worked effectively.  The scenes seemed to flow pretty quickly using only lighting changes on different parts of the stage.  The only set was the baseball diamond and the bleachers.

If you are interested, I would be happy to send you a DVD of our production.

I was harassed in gym class because of basketball. I do not care for the game. I do not understand it and I do not care to learn anything more about it.

And that, ladies and germs, is the end of my rant.

I must go to the bank and open my 2006 IRA.

Laters.

So, you're not the "sporting type", eh!

We only have street parking out here, and the car is walled in by the plows.

An interesting approach to having the streets ready for use after a storm - plow the surface and bury the cars!

TCB, I'd love to see the DVD.  It sounds like the play is the same and that the director might be the "pace" culprit.  The show was certainly done simply, with most of it done, as you say, through light changes.

We toured Ireland with the Dady Brothers, who are from New England but tour all over. After a day of sightseeing, they would playing in the clubs, and if no clubs were avaialbe, musicians from the area would gather at our hotels and they would have jam sessions.

The Dadys are extremely talented musicians and can play a variety of instruments...in a variety of ways!

I decided, several months ago, that I had no desire to see the Michael York's touring production of CAMELOT (not that there is anything wrong with it).  Yesterday, I found out that James Barbour is playing Lancelot.  So..... I am reviewing the situation.

I'm wondering if Leonard bernstein's "Omnibus" series episodes are available on DVD... Hmm...

(Time to head to Amazon...)

Jose, when you have a chance, could you explain again about this production?  Is it just going to be done at Westport, or does it hopefully have higher ambitions?  Is this the same show that was previously called OVER AND OVER?

I share your fears. I usually listen to the local classical music station each morning--wherever I'm living. We had a fairly good one here until recently--WGMS-FM--but it is no longer. National Public Radio has converted back to classical as a result, but without as much personality, IMHO. I liked hearing the latest Yoyo Ma and such; radio is a great way to hear new recordings.

...And I have to say it was kind of "cool" how WGMS stopped depending on "Classical Music's Greatest Hits" to fill their programming when WETA went to the all news format.  And they even picked up "From The Top"- which has to be my favorite NPR music program.  -Those are some talented kids!  -And I've always appreciated Christopher O'Riley's talent (and looks, truth be told).

-But now that WGMS is now long gone, and WETA has gone back to playing music... Well, I guess it's better than nothing.

And isn't the DC area, as a result of all the format changes, one of those "rare" major metropolitan areas that does not have a station that carries the weekly broadcasts from The Metropolitan Opera?

Back from the jog - easier today.  Shall now catch my breath, and then start writing - I got a good idea on the jog, and I have to go back, either to the last chapter or the chapter before and add it.  Then, as a result, I have a really good way to end this chapter.

Well, as I understand it...

All About Us started off originally at Over and Over when it premiered at Signature Theatre in Arlington, VA in 1998 (I think it was 1998).  The it became Skin of Our Teeth for a while (note the absence of the "The" in the title) for a while, and now it's All About Us.

Right now, it's simply a Westport Country Playhouse production.  Of course, people would love for it to come into New York, but as many people have learned over the years, sometimes treating an out-of-town production as simply an out-of-town production is the best way to get a show to get to The Broadway.  Otherwise, people's energies and focus are not truly on the work at hand.  -Counting your chickens and all that jazz...

*In fact, we don't say the "B-Word" in rehearsal.  ;)

The surgery is set for April 6th.  Originally we just had an appointment for an exam on the 5th with the intention we would return to Portland if surgery is necessary.  I convinced them to set aside time for the surgery since the odds are he will need it.  We don’t want to drag this out any longer than necessary.

Nope, the little leprechaun I'm holding in my hand in my avatar (DH)...but Boo-Key and the Leprechaun would take the annual dip in the pool as the traditional opening to St. Pat's Day  back in Texas when DS was a wee lad....and trust me there are some years March in Texas can be pretty cold ....did someone mention shrinkage?....

It’s St. Patrick’s day.  You wear green & maybe make fun cookies.  We went to a party once but it was boring & it was the weekend before the 17th..  The only real Patrick’s Day I even remember is the day my sister was married.  It was definitely a memorable day, yet just a drop of water in a bucketful of memorable incidents with my family.

It was a small ceremony with just the immediate family & a couple of friends.  I was insulted my fiancé wasn’t invited & wanted to protest.  He didn’t want to go & was relieved to have been overlooked.  The bride was pregnant.  The groom was drunk & stopped to pee in front of the court house.  My brother & I were horrified, the bride thought it was hysterical.  The mother of the bride was also drunk.  The judge thank goodness did a fine job & later married my brother & his wife.

Definitely a memorable Saint Patrick’s day. ;D

JRand it was far from the best of marriages.  Actually the judge didn’t have a good record when it came to marrying my siblings, they both ended up divorced & neither remarried.

My brother at least remained friends with his ex.  My sister didn’t.  Her ex did go to my father’s funeral which I thought was very sweet.  He also went to my sister’s funeral 3 months later.  I sat next to him at the service.

So, I was asked to do a song at the Barbara Deutsch Do tomorrow night.  Additionally, I was asked to write some parody lyrics to Mame.  So, I asked her best friend Alison to send me a list of Barbara habits.  She did, but way too late for me to write a parody lyric.  Meantime, I couldn't figure out what song to sing that would mean anything - then I had a stroke of luck and it came to me that I could just take Alison's list and set it to music.  Which I did, quickly.  And it's really funny.  I actually got everything to scan correctly by just adding a word or two here and there, and moving things around.

Hi, TCB! Yes, I caught up. I went off for brunch with my DH, and had scrambled eggs with broccoli in honor of my friends' first meeting. Yummm!

We were walking around the back of the restaurant and saw some folks loading in film equipment. It turned out to be some friends of Greg's who were shooting a music video, so we helped them load in their gear. We may go back up tonight to hear hte band while they're shooting. It's country music, not my fave, but it would be interesting to see a band play in this space, which is an old movie theatre which hasn't been used in decades.

The 6 episodes are on VHS. I don't know what season they're from or if they've been released but if not I'd be happy to pass them on to you if you'd like them. They are:

Flap Jack, Do It Again
Head Games
Mission Poachable

It is March 18th here so we can celebrate the birthday of Irene Cara.
As an 8 year old Miss Cara was in the cast of Maggie Flynn.  Thus there is still an Irish reference.

The #1 hit on St Pat's day 1958 was "Tequila" which is not exactly Irish.

DR edisaurus - Something you may - or may not want to know - about AVENUE Q right now...  Apparently, whatever bug that is making the rounds here in New York City - especially among people working in usually inadequately ventilated and poorly temperature-controlled "closed environments" - has struck the residents of The Golden big time over the past week.  In fact, there were two nights last week where the whole company onstage was composed of stand-bys and understudies.  -And there was one night where they almost had to cancel the show since almost everyone called in sick and/or the stage manager almost had to go on.  So...  It may be another week or two before things at The Golden - and every other theatre in town - get back to "normal".

What I'd suggest is just to check on tickets when you get into town.  By that time, the house row and the "premium seats" - if still available - may have been released.  *Although, the premium seats for the matinees of Avenue Q are only $50.00 more than the regularly priced seats, so...  But I'll still check availability for you.

After eating a big lunch at the Indian place I worked the rest of the afternoon in the yard...lawn mowed...flowers planted...berry bushes and rose bushes (ouch) cut back..etc, etc, etc.

Freddy and Dog Bosco supervised. They are both taskmasters.

I am now bruised, bloodied (damn rose bushes), and sore so I will flop on my couch like so much fish and stare at the television box.

Dansie before you go to the doctor, ask if they can even do anything for the toe.  Usually they just tape the sore one to the toe next to it & say that is all that can be done.

I will email you about Sherlock.

DR  Jose, what about EARNEST IN LOVE?????

OK, OK, OK!!!!

-Sometimes I just like need a little push to get things done.  In any case...

Ernest In Love starts next Tuesday, March 20, and then runs for two weeks.  *It's too bad that George Irving won't be in for this show - since this season of Musicals Tonight was dedicated to him, and features show that he was in the original casts of.  In any case...  The second week of the run works better for me.

*And they're now at the Promenade Theatre instead of the 45th (44th?) Street theatre.  Which is a good thing.

OH!  And tonight was my last chance to catch The Happy Time.  Ah, well... :(

I could put weight on my toe and it moved a little, but x-rays showed a hairline fracture. At first they didn't see it so they told me to wear something soft..then they saw it and told me to wear something sturdy...they just couldn't make up their minds. I might have to go the cane route.

What's wild about this is that one lady fell last year and broke her foot.  A few weeks ago another fell and hit her face.  If it hadn't been cold, she would have tore up her hands and arms but she had gloves and a jacket on.  Then the day after I took my little trip, some one else fell flat as well.  All of us work on the 22nd floor.

I told our director that the streets of Tampa are out to get the county employees who work downtown!   :)

One of them saw Avenue Q this past Thursday and loved it.  If there were understudies on, it didn't seem to bother her.  She had seen it previously in Vegas, and said the experience of seeing it with an enthusiastic New York audience made her glad she had seen it again.

Now I want to watch a Bollywood movie...I have just around 90 or so unwatched Bollywood DVDs...and out of all of those many films in my cabinet the one that I want to see I can't find!!!!

I don't think any stores sold out, however.

Ate at Shula's steak house with some friends visiting from Scottsdale, Arizona.

One of them saw Avenue Q this past Thursday and loved it.  If there were understudies on, it didn't seem to bother her.  She had seen it previously in Vegas, and said the experience of seeing it with an enthusiastic New York audience made her glad she had seen it again.

I actually meant no slight to the stand-bys and understudies in Avenue Q.  In fact, two of them have been with the show since the workshops.  *And I actually like one of the understudies better in a certain role more than the overstudy, so...  But that's besides the point.

I know some of the former cast members of the Vegas company, and the horror stories they've told me about that whole experience out there.  Las Vegas is not a theatre town.  Not by a long shot.  And when the management decides to allow food and drinks in the theatre...  And when members of the audience donn't realize it was a two act show (at least before it got cut down to 90 minutes)...  Mayhem and misery are bound to occur. And it did.  In spades!  (-Get it, "spades", a gambling reference... Vegas... Well...)

I've just been watching that Food Network Star Kitchen Makeover program on FoodTV...  I wish Alton Brown would makeover my kitchen!  AND let me do a cameo on "Good Eats"!

The color scheme was a bit too "bright" for me, but the appliances, the countertops, the storage, the double ovens, the two sinks (both with disposals), the pop-up shelf for the stand mixer, the extra-wide refrigerator, the new home office, the new dining room, etc.... I WANT IT ALL!!!!

Next, I watched ANDY BARKER, P.I., the new comedy series starring Andy Richter. It was pleasantly silly with a slight little missing persons mystery. Not especially funny really, but it was great to see Harve Presnell in a nice supporting part. Looks like he's going to be on the show as a regular. I'll continue watching.

Then I put on the Blu-ray version of CASINO ROYALE. The transfer was every bit as good as I was hoping, and the Bahamas scenes in particular were eye popping. All of the lush interior scenes (the poker tournament, their hotel rooms, and the dining room) also looked lush and very three dimensional.

I'd still say that MISSION IMPOSSIBLE III is the zenith so far of visual quality on Blu-ray that I've seen (others say KINGDOM OF HEAVEN is, but I don't have that and am not likely to get it.)

Jose - I didn't think you were slighting them, not in the least.  Sorry if it seemed I was saying that.  Just wanted to reflect that seeing the show with a typical NYC audience may be a more alive experience than seeing it on tour, this show more than so many oitehrs.

And it IS interesting, as you note, that the great premium seats are "only" $50 more for many performances than the regular price seats that are available.  The marketing on Avenue Q in NYC has been really smart (in a good way), and it lets people feel they're getting something really special (the premium seats) at a relatively small bump-up compared to the premium bump-up for most shows.

MBarnum have you ever seen "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai"? For a few years, our dollar theatre had one screen devoted to first run Bollywood films. This is the only title I remember, because it ran there for so long. We even had some Indian restaurants springing up near the theatre, and it was the hot date spot for young Indian couples, always dressed to the nines.

Then the theatre closed and it all suddenly the whole Indian subculture vanished. It was nice while it lasted, but I always wondered: "where did everybody go?"

I'm going to see a new documentary in Sioux City on Wednesday, it's called The Angel of Ahlem  here's a blurb about it

Angel of Ahlem
Angel of Ahlem is the story of how a gentile and small group of Polish Jews find redemption, hope and love because of 19 black and white photos.

On April 10, 1945, 20-year-old Vernon Tott from Sioux City, Iowa, stumbled upon a compound outside Hanover, Germany. He and his buddies in the 84th Infantry Division had just routed the few remaining Germans. The compound, ringed in barbed wire, displayed a sign warning SS troops not to enter for fear of disease and lice. To Vernon Tott’s horror, he saw emaciated men barely able to stand, others lying in their urine and feces, racked with dysentery, still others stiff and cold, dressed in tatters, dead for days.

Not quite sure why—perhaps as proof of what his eyes refused to believe—he pulled out a second-hand camera he’d bought in New Orleans before joining the war in Europe. He recorded the horror of what he saw but also the hope in the face of those who had survived.

When he returned home, he had the pictures developed but put them away with the rest of his bad memories of the war. For 52 years, the pictures stayed in his basement, in a shoebox covered by dust, until one of the camp survivors placed a notice in a 1997 veterans’ newsletter seeking the GI who had taken the camp photos some 52 years ago.

Vernon Tott saw the notice, realized he was the GI and pulled out the photos and contacted the survivor. This chance encounter became the catalyst for Vernon Tott’s fevered quest to find each survivor featured in his photos. To date, he has found 13 of the 19. Vernon Tott, 79 and beset by cancer and a stroke, spends his days looking for the remaining five.

Vernon has sent 13 survivors their photos, forging a deep and unbreakable bond between this midwestern gentile and small group of Holocaust survivors. Nine of the survivors traveled to a recent reunion of the 84th division just to meet Vernon and to thank the man they call their “angel.”

Angel of Ahlem is a story about hope and how one man changed his life and the lives of a handful of Holocaust survivors by choosing to bear witness to man’s inhumanity and to reach out to strangers and offer them undeniable and irrevocable images of the most seminal moment in their lives.

We celebrated greatly DR Elmore...  Last weekend we had Irish fest and I played the bodhran for several sets. Great fun, I had not done that in a while. This weekend I was at a friend's neice's wedding. Being Irish, her neice had an irish themed wedding. The groom is originally from Ireland and they had a blessing read in Irish.

Have had a helacious week where i literally had to turn my schedule for four days this past week from my normal 330 to midnight to 730am to 4 and by the time you get home, you want to crash... I have also had some personal matters I have had to deal with including dealing wiht aunt vulture...

On Thursday, DBF and I made a flying trip by car to the Twin Cities where he wanted to do research for his dissertation at the MN Historical Society and I went along and did genealogical research. I am working on my line and on his line which goes back to England and Germany. He is a Puritan descendant. His ancestors settled in Barnstable County, MA. DBF leaves tomorrow for an interview in the county of Lost Angels at CSU- Dominguez Hills.

Also for some odd reason I cannot access the site from work. I am hoping it is a fluke for I can read  the notes but not the board.

Plantation Irish...

Mine are from County Donegal and from Ballymena in county Antrim.

DF Cassie is originally from Belfast.

Hi.  I just caught up to your post.

Sherlock is the same thank you.  He wants to jump & play & we do our best to keep him quiet so he doesn’t do more damage.

The surgery is set for April 6th.  Originally we just had an appointment for an exam on the 5th with the intention we would return to Portland if surgery is necessary.  I convinced them to set aside time for the surgery since the odds are he will need it.  We don’t want to drag this out any longer than necessary.

Another bit of trivia:  I went to my first home owners association meeting today (all these years I have been trying to avoid those meetings) -- talk about Erg!   Lots of control freaks in this world... I was ready to make the motion that they change the name of our subdivision from Southview to Analview....

"Analview"!!!!  I won't "touch" that! I won't!

Today has been a long day!  I started by not getting out of bed until about 12:30 p.m. (for the first time in a long time) and all I did was watch TV.  I didn't turn on my computer except to check my e-mail and update my Virus Protection software.  After that, I went over to my sister's for a couple of hours.  Our parents came over and we all played cards for a while.  My mom made corned beef and cabbage ( :P ) and my sister made fried potatoes and I made some instant mashed potatoes.

After that, I had to leave to usher for a performance by the comedian Josh Blue (http://joshblue.com/index_lo.html), who won last year's "The Last Comic Standing."  He was funny!  He sold and autographed CDs and DVDs after the show and I got a DVD (which I got autographed).  He stayed as long as people were there.  It was a great show!  His opening act was another comedian whose name I don't know, but he was funny, also.  I got his autograph in the season program (even though his name's not in it).  A GREAT time was had by all! ;D

Tomorrow, I'm working concessions for The Olympia Symphony Orchestra and they're performing German music:

The OSO World Tour takes us, without the need of an airline ticket of security screening to Germany with the talented Jennifer Choi performing Beethoven’s sublime Violin Concerto in D major. Come and enjoy OSO performing a powerful and stirring excerpt from The Mastersingers of Nuremberg by Wagner and Brahms’ Academic Festival Overture.

Today is St. Patrick's Day (I'm 1/4 Irish on my dad's side) and tomorrow will be an evening of German music (I'm 3/4 German...my mom IS German), so it's all very appropriate!

I totally forgot to wear ANYTHING green today. ::) Oh, well. :)
