Well, you've read the notes, the notes were both high and low, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - it is, after all, the moo-dnight hour.

Good morning to myself.

No one here but us chickens.

I'm not listening to anything right now. I am about to go and do the obvious at 7:20am on Friday, March 23, 2007.

We will watch As Time Goes By this evening, now that Channel 21 (one of our local PBS outlets) has ended their fundraising and gone back to regular programming.

We are supposed to go out to New Jersey tomorrow for a "Cousins" get together. The Morelli clan cousins are very close and have spontaneous gatherings frequently. I'm a cousin-in-law so I'm allowed to be part of the party.

We saw Johnny Guitar last night. While the pre-show was a bit disorganized, watching the movie was a hoot. I had never seen it before. I saw the Off-Broadway musicalization (a mix of camp and musical and great fun) but never the film. Miss Crawford was in top form as ingenue Vienna (even though by that time she was around 49-50 years old) but she was beat in the overacting game by Miss Mercedes McCambridge. Between the two of them the scenery was in splinters. The print, a 35mm, was in decent shape also.

Alas, I must move on to the kitchen. I will return (a Douglas MacArthur reference).

P.S. Anthony's Drowsy Chaperone audition is this afternoon. Vibes would be appreciate. Thank you all.

Good morning, all!  DR TCB, what are you doing up so late or so early?  You too, BK?

I have no plans beyond laundry and a trip to NYPL.  I spent the afternoon looking at the new critical editions of RIGOLETTO, and Johann Strauss' DER ZIGEUNERBARON, DIE FLEDERMAUS, and EINE NACHT IN VENEDIG.  I'd guess each volume of the Strauss operettas costs around $500, and they are beautiful!  I want them all, especially ZIGEUNERBARON.  Each volume contains an intro in German and English describing the editorial decisions for all the volumes, a history of the work, the full orchestra score, an appendix of revisions and alternate numbers, and the libretto, often several different ones - such as the Berlin and Viennese texts which often have major differences.  I didn't know until yesterday, for instance, that Strauss wrote a different Czardas for the leading lady in a revival of FLEDERMAUS.  I'm surprised no one's recorded it.

The  RIGOLETTO costs around $350, and it's equally beautiful, but not as complex as some of the other Verdi editions because it wasn't subjected to rewrites/fullscale revisions like MACBETH or DON CARLOS.  I hate being poor.

Next week I will look at the new Rossini edition and the new edition of Grieg's PEER GYNT.

TOD:
DVD:  John Tucker Must Die, Orpheus in der Unterwelt
CD:  The Brain from Planet X, Der Zigeunerbaron, David Shire

For NYC area H/Ks - and others, perhaps, as well, although you'll need to check your local schedules - PBS/13 will be broadcasting the Met's new production of Tan Dun's The First Emperor on Thu 3/29 at 9:00 PM.  And again Sat 3/31 at 3:00 AM.

The world-premiere broadcast of Chinese composer Tan Dun's epic opera features legendary tenor Placido Domingo as Emperor Qin, who built the Great Wall and gave China its name. Tan Dun's music is a fascinating mix of East and West, and this monumental production is staged by revered Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou (Raise the Red Lantern and House of Flying Daggers), with costumes by Oscar-winning designer Emi Wada (Kurosawa's Ran). That's the thing about work in "the biz" He hasn't had auditions for weeks and now he has three and more in the next couple of weeks. Unfortunately, we know he won't be going back to Mill Mountain Theatre in Roanoke, VA for this year's summer production of Big River (they have decided to cast locally instead of coming to New York for talent) so he needs to find other jobs.

Singdaw, if you go up to the top of the page, you will see links to various pages on the site. There is a feature here called The Broadway Radio Show hosted by Donald Feltham. It's a weekly show focused on theatre and sometimes film music. He has interviews and plays CDs, etc. This week's show is a "Putting it Together" show where he focuses on one show (Cabaret this week) and uses different recordings to play all the songs. It's a very nice way to hear different performers.

The show usually changes every Sunday so this week, March 25th, the show will be about The Brain from Planet X.

On top of this page click on Broadway Radio, or from the home page with the notes click on the microphone at the left side of the page. When you get to Broadway Radio Show click on the title under "This Week's Show" Real Player will open and the show will begin. Even on a high speed connection the lag between clips can sometimes be slow so be patient. The show will usually play in its entirety, it just takes some time between clips. It has to do with the server and configuration and all that technical stuff.

DR Ben [and others] - thanks for your patience with the new guy.  I had somehow got the impression that Donald's radio broadcasts weren't happening any longer, or that there was some sort of technical problem.

DR elmore3003 - thanks very much for posting the Kathleen Battle article yesterday.  Most interesting!

I tried to post an anecdote my late baritone friend William Parker told me, but I lost it when I tried to post it because I'd added Will's photo.  I'm not even sure after so many years that I'm telling this accurately.

Will told me that Ms Battle and Ms Jessye Norman were in a European (London?) production of Nozze di Figaro and at the opening party someone read an article mentioning the "black American soprano Kathleen Battle."  At which point Ms Battle began a tantrum about "it's always black American soprano!" She finally became so worked up and hostile that she left the party.  At which point the wonderful black American soprano Jessye Norman said to the stunned crowd, "well, someone had to tell her."

At which point the wonderful black American soprano Jessye Norman said to the stunned crowd, "well, someone had to tell her."

Hee hee!   ;D

A musician friend of mine once moonlighted as a waiter in an upscale restaurant near Chicago's Lyric Opera.  One night, after a performance, Jessye came in with her entourage.  My friend made a bet with a fellow waiter that before she left, he would get her to sing.

Word of the bet circulated among the staff, and soon, the waiter's station was piled high with cash, all betting against my friend's claim.

At the appropriate moment, he dashed to the kitchen, grabbed a spare pastry, stuck and candle in it, and delivered it - to an unsuspecting young couple seated unfortunately in just the right spot in the dining room.  My friend then began "Happy Birthday", encouraging all seated nearby to join in.  Jessye won my friend's wager by contributing a thrilling high note to cap the song off.

Cablevision is supposed to be sending a technician between 5:00 PM and 8:00 PM tonight to fix the cable service which has mysteriously gone on the fritz since sometime on Wednesday.

Thankfully, internet service is separate and has been unaffected.

Friday morning greetings!  Grantseeking Basics was a smash last night with 29 people in attendance.  Today I have a midday meeting at Wright State University, after which I'm taking the rest of the afternoon off - YAY!

TOD - CD(car) - audiobook,  Lauren Willig's The Deception of the Emerald Ring, narrated by Kate Reading (aka actress Jennifer Mendenhall, who I hope to see in Dead Man's Cell Phone (http://www.woollymammoth.net/productions/cell%20phone/index.html) in June).  She's my all-time favorite audiobook narrator.

DVD, VCR - nothing - watching World Figure Skating Championships on ESPN instead

I meant to mention when DR Ben talked about Ant's audition for SHEAR MADNESS that the show had a nine month run here, the longest in the history of Charlotte theater.

The authors personalize the show for the area where it's being performed, so it get A LOT of local attention, and it also is a VERY funny show which leaves the audience feeling good and with  goofy smiles on their faces when it's over.

And crossed fingers and toes for his auditions today, too!!

Tonight, I am attending a performance of THE DONKEY SHOW, of all things.

My friend who directed and choreographed me in BABY was the choreographer for THE DONKEY SHOW, and he has invited me to come see his work. Needless to say, I have heard horrendous things about the content of the show, and I'm not looking forward to it. I must also drive 52 miles to see this thing.

But, that's what being a friend is all about, I guess.

He told me the show is less than 90 minutes (I think there is an intermission), so I should be home at a decent hour even with that long drive back home.

DR JRand, I think you are thinking of Albert Glasser. He is the one who did the music for ATTACK OF THE PUPPET PEOPLE and who shared his recordings with me.

Herman Stein, however worked on the music in many of the Universal films of the 50s, and some wonderful music indeed!

Jose - On a light-traffic Sunday, I'd bet you'd make it.  It took me only 25 minutes from midtown once.  You'd have your ticket in hand, and the tickets are right off the aisle, so you wouldn't be disturbing people in your row.  Just not sure what the late-seating policy is at BAM, though.

DR PennyO, the alternate Czardas is published in the appendix of the Strauss critical edition of FLEDERMAUS.  There's a companion vocal score published, so it may be an appendix in that as well.  Check the UCLA music library and see if they have the edition in reference.

Last night's "Ugly Betty":

SPOILER

The episode was extremely well done, I thought.  Some terrific turns...especially between Mark and his mother...and Betty.

I was a bit put off by the twist involving Daniel and Alexis.  Daniel seems to have simply wussed out.  I had hopes for him, and now I'm disapppointed.  I don't know if that was the show's intent or not.

Of course, the show has to develop in interesting and devious ways....so....Stay Tuned, I reckon.

I don't know, but i didn't love it as much as i've loved most of the other episodes.  And i love Patti Lupone. But didn't love her last night.

I liked the parts with betty and marc. That was pretty funny.  But i just didn't think the stuff with daniel and alexis was all that great.

Maybe i was distracted by doing other things. But i just wasn't as thrilled with this episode as most people here seem to have been.

Yes, Anthony has left New York, moved to California, stopping off in Oregon to pick up a very large, young dog and has moved in with Cason. Heather has left Cason and moved to New York and is now living in Chelsea. 2 switches out of 4.

And it's not even April Fools Day yet.

Fred, I've noticed recently that some folks who walk their dogs now put on one of those strap muzzles. I thought of it because we have a corgi in our neighborhood (and I was glancing at your avatar) and the owner muzzles it. I always feel sorry for the dog. Do you put a muzzle on Toby and Dylan when you walk them?

DR Ben, I don't use a muzzle with my Zach, but he's very friendly.  And I don't live in NYC.  I do know dog owners that use them, with dogs that are either somewhat aggressive and/or unpredictable with strangers.  And, I suppose, people that are worried about the increased litigiousness of society today.  But whether it's uncomfortable for the dog, I don't know.

DR Ben, I'm not sure if it's the same thing or not, but my sister has been walking her dog using something called a "Gentle Leader", which is a heavy canvas strap that goes on like a muzzle.  From what I understand, it's the latest trend in controlling your dog on lead without using a chain choker collar.  Homer (my sister's dog) can't wait to put it on when he sees it because he knows it means that he's going OUT FOR A WALK!!!  Once he's home, though, he can't wait to get the thing off.

I think that might be what I'm seeing. I know it's not a full muzzle, just a strap that goes on around the area you would put the muzzle. Thanks for the info.

Unfortunately, my dates to go to NYC have to remain the week starting on Monday June 25th.  It dovetails right after an event I have to be at in Chicago.

On my budget I just can't come that weekend...if I go earlier the plane ticket is only $234. If I go later the price doubles!

My orignal plan was to attend Monster Bash in Pittsburgh and then stop off in NY...but then the price triples not including hotel accommodations...I really need to watch my spending so I am cancelling my trip to Pittsburgh altogether.

However, I am still going to be in LA April 24 through the 29th...and seems to me we have a dinner date on one of those dates...do we not? And of course it would be quite fun to have you along on my trip to Little Tokyo and Bronson Canyon if you are free and willing.

DR Musicguy and DR Ginny, when were you both planning on being in NY?...

DR MBarnum - DH Richard and I have been planning to head to NYC from Washington, DC, on Thursday, June 28, and stay until Monday, July 2.  That plan may have to be altered depending on

1) what Richard learns from the shoulder doctor he's seeing on Monday (vibes for no surgery, please!) and

2) whether or not my request to have the jury duty (for which I received the summons today) rescheduled does not interfere with those plans.  The 2 weeks in May for which they now have me scheduled conflict with major work commitments, so I'm going to ask for a time period in July or August.

This morning, as I was puttering about I listened to all three UNSUNG MUSICALS recordings.  I think my favorite performance may be Debbie Gravitte's "Hero" and my favorite orchestration that I did is Liz Callaway's "New Words."  I had forgotten how many wonderful numbers were on those three discs.

Why do I have the feeling that the term "fire escape", in references to accommodating DR MBarnum, is actually a euphemism for something else altogether?

Re: the new $.41 postage stamps.

The postal service is advertising that it will also issue comething called the "Forever Stamp."

I don't know how long they will be selling it, but the gist is that the "Forever Stamp" will be good no matter how many times the prices of 1st class postage increase in the future.  If you have them, they will "do the trick".

In my CD player here at work:  Chess På Svenska (http://www.dresscircle.co.uk/product.asp?StockID=24617):

It's the studio recording of the first Swedish language production of Chess.  I also have the DVD but (incorrectly) assumed that the CD was a live recording.  It's not.  I got it from an Amazon.co.uk Marketplace seller for about $27 US...including shipping!  And it was brand new!!  Dresscircle.co.uk has it for 29.95GBP, which is close to $60!

Hopeful vibes continue for the Lassners...

I just talked to Jane: Sherlock is finally going in for the shoulder surgery and, while they have him under, contrast x-rays. The doc is hoping to find the bones intact, which would mean no digging around inside, looking for fragments to remove.

The detailed pix of the elbows showed a slightly less-disastrous condition than expected which, however, cannot be corrected right now. The surgeon will open up both legs to see what's the story with those elbows, and then close 'em up. It may be - this would be the miracle - that, as this baby boy grows, the situation wouldn't be as bad as it looks right now. The best-case prognosis is that Sherlock will come up to as much as 90 percent of normal growth and movement, running, hiking, playing. Worst case is something I will not consider right now. HHW vibes for best-case, please!

More info as I get it.

That is difficult to say...most of these titles I have not seen..however, stuff from the early 70s are usually a good bet, campiness wise...and if you click on the picture of the dvd in the listing it will bring up more info...some have viewer ratings.

Here are some of the titles that I thought looked like fun...

this looks like a cute comedy....

this one from 1960 has a wonderful cast....

New episodes will air every Monday starting April 2, the rest of the week will be reruns, but recent ones.

The show is called "A Gardener's Diary":

It's not a how-to, but more like half hour documentaries about gardeners across the country.

...otherwise just click on various titles and a plot will be given and maybe you will find someting fun...my taste might not match yours..for instance I am not too crazy about 80s and 90s films, Bollywood or otherwise, but there might be some grand titles there.

Beware, there are a couple listed that do not have subtitles...so be sure to look for that. The end of the listings are compilations of musical scenes from various movies..those can be fun.

3/26
3/27*
3/29
3/30*
4/3*
4/4
4/9

The ones with astericks are particular favorites of mine.

The friends we're dining with on Saturday are the subjects of a show later in the season, where I got to take a few subtle digs at our city's  anti-historic preservation attitude. Hehehe...

Just returned from the fish fry for which I contributed the pecan pie.  The way it works is:  you pay and go through the line for your dinner (2 kinds of fish, mac & cheese, green beans, french fries, hushpuppies, and the best cole slaw I've ever tasted) and dessert is at the end, $1 extra for a piece of pie or cake.  Richard and I got our dinner and I glanced at the dessert table where my 6 slices of pecan pie had joined all the other items.  By the time we finished our meal and returned to select our dessert (which I brought home for later), all the pecan pie was GONE!  Richard selected banana creme and I chose turtle.

Strange day at work today, with a leak coming from one of the freezer units, resulting in a puddle that stretched under the shelves to two aisled over.

And Cashier Laurie somehow jammed one of the coupon printers (but we're blaming assistant manager Robert - it's kinda like blaming Jose).

And there was a backlog at the deli department, resulting in a customer (male) having a supermarket version of road rage meltdown.  Chill, dude, sheesh.

And what is it about frozen pizza, that when a customer is buying a frozen pizza there is this irresistable urge to put something else on top of the pizza box while it's on the belt before I can scan it at the register?

No, you put the CDs in your bag when you realize that you want to take them to work!!!  No waiting!

I've got a bag I take with me to work every day.  It has the book I'm reading (always a cookbook or something about food) and my coat inside, and my nametag pinned on the outside.

I just read HERE (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/106775.html) on Playbill.com that if you haven't gotten the currently-available "world premiere recording" of the off-Broadway production to Grey Gardens, GET IT NOW!!  When the "original Broadway cast recording" becomes available in an exclusive internet sale on the PS Classics website starting March 27 (otherwise available everywhere on April 15), the first recording "will be replaced by the Broadway album, which the authors see as their definitive version of their work, PS Classics co-founder Tommy Krasker told Playbill.com. The first disc will, like the Beales, gracefully go out of print."

Just had to share. :)

CD - Home - nothing
Car - Glory and Praise Collection from Oregon Catholic Press - Disc 20
iPod - An Andrew Llloyd Webber playlist (who knew??)
DVD - workout demo video

"Extreme Body Make-Over" Day 5 - Personally, I am enjoying the plan so far.  DP, however is it.  Being the foodie he is, he can't eat the same thing more than once in a few days, so this is driving him nuts.  He's been on the EBMO (Extreme Body Make Over in internet lingo) forums, and has picked up some recipes for sauces and such.  Hopefully, that will help.  I'm just grateful he's been doing most of the prep.  It makes it easier.  I walked today, which was great, hills and all.  On this plan, I seem to have an abundance of energy, which is great.  Shirts are feeling looser across the chest, I'm happy - for now (and only for now!)

DR ELMORE - I think Unsung Broadway was one of the first BK-Produced CD's I bought without knowing anything about it....and "New Words" is a special song that has wonderful meaning....and a beautiful arrangement.

When the occasion calls for it, I always do that song in sign language, and it never fails to bring down the house!!!

The arrangement gives me lots of time for improvisation.  ;D

Re: Ugly Betty

SPOILERAGE!!!

While I appreciate the demands of plotting on a soap opera/telenovella like this, I am disappointed by the totally negative rejection by Mama Weiner of her son, Mark.  Yes, it happens, but not nearly as often as supposed.  It is the fear of the rejection that keeps so many men (and women) like Mark from being honest with their parents.  I would have preferred Mama Weiner saying something like "I don't know what to say," and then leaving, than her outright rejection of her own son.

MySisterTheBitch used this fear of rejection to drive a wedge between my father and myself for years.  When I finally got the nerve to talk honestly with him, he did not reject me, but accepted me for who I am.

And MySisterTheBitch is the family Democrat.  Go figure.

Aaaand, this one has sliced almonds on top of the whipped cream.

Almonds are good, and great on many things, I'll grant you that, but I'd end up picking them off cause I do not like "stuff" (I was going to say nuts, but I knew you HHWers would have a field day with that...) in whipped cream, nor in my ice cream (now chocolate chips or candy bits in ice cream are another story...)..

Whipped cream is one of those culinary delights that needs no enchancement...

And what is the fascination some customers have with $100 bills?

I had one guy today who ran up a bill of something like $110.  So he hands me two hundred dollar bills.  Uh, he didn't have anything smaller?  Like, this somehow made him look more powerful?

DR SWOODY,
I once had the unlikely problem of possessing a number of $100 bills. (How I got them is another story.)  Actually, they can be harder to get rid of than you would think. Many places don't have enough cash to deal with them; many places don't want bills over $20. I learned through experience that a grocery store was the best place to use them.

Yes, they did. The theater was turned into a disco hall, and since my friend was the choreographer, he told me this in advance. And naturally, since he knew I was going to be there, I got pulled into the show. All this was expected and not a surprise.

I don't wear a toga.  I work at home.

DR Jose and I have had a delightful evening beginning with Indian food (eatcha heart out, Barnum!) at Sawat, and then a delightful performance of the 1960 musical ERNEST IN LOVE.  This concert presentation was a delight, overall much better sung than the original off-Broadway cast, and the cast was quite wonderful: Lauren Molina, the Johanna from the recent SWEENEY TODD Revival, was wonderful as Gwendolyn, and Mr Nick Dalton was a delight as Algernon Moncrief.  I had a great time hearing the score again, as well as the music that didn't make the original recording, and I enjoyed everyone's perfromance.  It's quite a clever adaptation of one of my favorite comedies.

Before I left on my daylong excursion this afternoon, I did manage to find time to watch last night's SMALLVILLE.

I didn't really understand how Clark's skin could be broken and bloody since all the literature after SUperman I know had his skin impervious to everything unless he was significently weakened by kryptonite. That wasn't the case here. He was in a FIght CLub situation where he was getting beaten up and he was bloody and broken. (BTW, by the end of the episode, he didn't even have a bruise, much less any open wounds. Unless weeks had passed between the end of the fight and the end of the episode, that seemed strange too.)

The Lana/baby storyline was not been of much interest to me all season, so some of that got wrapped up though I can see that all is not what it seems.

But the producers are definitely writing and filming this toward their target audience: teens and early 20s males with the fight stuff, the two women having an almost lesbian encounter before swapping body kicks and other punches.

THE DONKEY SHOW was abysmal, a slight bar tab show disguised as a piece of musical theater. The story of two couples with the womanizing men being left by their girl friends and then reunited by show's end, it couldn't have been lamer or more uninteresting to me. Community theater or not, there were a few people with considerable  talent on that stage that was utterly wasted in this when a REAL show could have shown off their talent.

And if they had their heart set on doing a disco show, get the rights to SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER for goodness sake! At least that had a story.

Some character NAMES from Shakespeare's A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM, but there all similarities end.

I just read that contrary to earlier reports, actress Emma Watson will appear as Hermione Granger in the last two HARRY POTTER films. So, the trio of actors who began the series will see it through to its conclusion. I'm glad about that.

Okay, hainsies/kimlets drug addicts - I need to know what kind of drug, popular drug, would be given to someone who has had a huge tragedy - you know, to sedate and calm them down because they'd gone into a completely depressive state - is that Zanex?  Lithium?  There some flavor of the month drug whose name I can't remember that's like Zanex but isn't.  Any help?

Well, if you want to make it interesting, marijuana seems to making quite the comeback lately.   :-\

And speaking of movies and Bollywood, it is time for me to settle down with one....tonights Bollywood movie is POLICE FORCE (2004) starring Akshay Kumar.

I love the soundtrack, so I am hoping the movie is good...although I suspect it will be an average action thriller.

Hi -

Okay, for bad news, it's really good news:

I just spoke to Jane - Sherlock came out of surgery very well. The surgeon was able to fix the shoulders, and the good news was that the bones had NOT shattered yet, no garbage to clean out, and the prognosis is not bad on the shoulders.

There were bone fragments in both elbows - those were removed, but the big problems with the joint can't be fixed right now, so keep your fingers x'd for the next go round.

Jane and Keith are very much more relaxed than they were this afternoon, and may even get some sleep tonight. They pick up the pupster boy tomorrow morning. He's been shaved here there and everywhere, and looks like he's been nibbled by rats... Now will come several tedious months of convalescence - during which a puppy isn't allowed to cavort and play...

Hold a space for miracles in your hearts, Hainsies!

Well, I've never stayed at that particular property, but I've always had wonderful experiences at Omni Hotels.  And spending the few extra dollars to stay on the Club/Concierge floors is sooooo worth it - breakfast and afternoon cocktails and light hors d'ouevres plus some other amenities.

OxyContin may interfere with your ability to do certain things that require your full attention. You should not drive a car, operate heavy machinery, or do other possibly dangerous activities while taking OxyContin.

Other less serious side effects include headache, nausea, depression, muscle pain, vivid dreams, temporary amnesia, and others.

I think oxycontin is a painkiller. It is in vogue with the young set at pharm parties (or used to be, anyway). I am not sure a doctor would prescribe it to calm someone down when they've had an emotional trauma. You'd get it for pain.

Antidepressants take a while to kick in. They wouldn't give you a high like you are looking for.

I think.

Well it damn sure isn't white! The approved method for laundering white togas is to first soak them over-night in urine.

And now (at 10:45 PM), I am FINALLY leaving work!  Today was the cut-off for paying the invoices and it HAD to get done.  So, I had to do it and finish it all.  I could've come in to work tomorrow, but I don't want to...so I'm not.  I'm still here (a Sondheim reference!).  And now, I'm outta here. :)

Quote from Goerge:
Did you (or anyone) happen to notice that when Jeff Goldblum was talking with someone, he would frequently glance away from the person's face at what looked to me to be a specific point??  All I could think about during most of the episode was that he's using cue cards!

Anyone who knows personally feel free to argue that I am incorrect, but I happen to "know" that Jeff Goldblum does nothing of the sort, and that the eye movements come from a rare style of acting called "thinking while acting". He is one of the few actors who I can see connecting thoughts and seemingly comes up with the lines as he says them, although he does indeed learn his lines.
