Title: STURM UND DRANG

Well, you've read the notes, the notes had a little sturm and a little drang, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're doing the hokey pokey right now.

Okay, late last night (actually, just a few minutes ago), I got a diet Pepsi out of my sister's fridge in her garage and the expiration date on the bottom of the can is "Jan 22 07."  I thought that that might not be too long ago in terms of soda expiration dates, but NO...it's bad.  It tastes "dusty" and I'm not finishing it. :P

Just had to share. :)

DP Colin's Step-mum is a sponsor of one of Melbourne Zoo's Red Pandas.  (It was her birthday gift from us last year).

We also gave a sponsorship of a Rothschild's Giraffe to our friend Peter who marries Shirley Rothschild. We figured he would cope with the responsibility.

Topic of the Day:

What's the best thing that I've ever won?  About 10 years ago or so, I bought a Zero candy bar at my work they were having a prize give-a-way.  I opened the wrapper and saw that I won a portable CD player (I think the value at that time was about $150)!  I actually already had one that I bought, so I gave the CD player that I just won to my dad.  He loved it...and he still has it!  It's still working. :D

The biggest prize I ever won was a 19" TV through a McDonald's Monopoly contest.  It was not the greatest of television sets--the color was always off and it was probably one of the last models that had a non-digital tuner.  It didn't last long, either--after only three years the picture went dark.  I didn't bother trying to get it repaired.

The best biggest prize I ever won was a $100 certificate at Tower Records.  I won it at the perfect time--right at the release of a batch of cast recording reissues on Angel Records.  I was able to pick up every single one.

I also won the cast recording of BUDDY from a contest at Tower.

(I can not remember a single pepsi advertisement).

The only ones people I know notice are the ones that laughably compare Pepsi to Coke.

I once participated in a "Pepsi Challenge".  I knew exactly what the "Pepsi" was every time.  The "Coke", however, was watered down...and, I suspect, mixed with something other than Coke.  But I still picked "Coke" over Pepsi.

Prizes:  Have won two "sparkling prizes" here at HHW.com.

Have won a few CDs, some autographed.

And I won a nice (if a bit broken) clock as a door prize in a NATO Allied Officers Wives Club event.  The clocck is battery operated but looks like a real windup clock with pendulum (table-sized, rather than a floor clock).  The pendulum did not/does not move.

I have been around folks who win big prizes.  A guy who worked for me in Naples, Italy, won a Volvo.  A lady who works with me now won a 50-inch widescreen TV a couple of years back off a grocery store "scratcher."

Inside, my gut tells me I'm gonna be lucky one day.  Practical reality tells me it's a pipe dream.

Good morning, all!  I don't know if it's all the meds, the season change, mourning, anxiety, but I feel I need every other day resting.  This week I am out every night, and this old whore is tired.

I saw Encores! FACE THE MUSIC, which has a very peculiar book; it's points on the connection between entertainment and politics is still relevant, as are its comments on poverty, the depression, police corruption, and the whoredom of show business.  Unfortunately, I don't think the book ties it all sufficiently together, but it's full of very funny moments and very funny lines.  Of course how much is Moss Hart's original and David Ives' "adaptation" is questionable since Encores! falls down on the scholastic side of things.  There are four interpolations including a song from BK's UNSUNG IRVING BERLIN, "How Can I Change My Luck," and all four are well performed.

The cast was good, and it's about time Judy Kaye was in an Encores! production. She was wonderful, as was our old friend Lee Wilkof.  Walter Bobbie, once again, is so wonderful that I wish he'd do more performance and less direction.  The three of them are very funny.

Today, another rounmd at the NYPL; today, Rossini and the new Broude edition of Gilbert & Sullivan.  Tonight, Manhattan School of Music one-act Puccini operas FIANNI SCHICCHI and IL TABARRO.

TOD:  My greatest win ever, hands down, was the Pulitzer Prize for SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE.  In 1965, I won the Oxfortd English Dictionary  in the  Miami University Bookstore Award for research writing.  Oh, I won $50 once on the NY State Lottery.

I have won lots of small prizes: LPs in contests, a couple of Sparkling Prizes here, some DVDs, some free movie tickets in Oscar guessing and trivia contests.

But the one that meant the most to me at the time was winning the LP soundtrack to MY FAIR LADY before it was officially released for sale. A local film critic received three LP soundtracks for MY FAIR LADY prior to the film's premiere, and he sponsored a contest to give them away. I was one of the three winners so I got my soundtrack to MY FAIR LADY for free. Of course, I was disappointed it was in mono rather in stereo but at least it didn't cost me anything except a postage stamp to enter the trivia contest.

Not a lot of new TV episodes tonight, but there are a few things of interest.

CBS' slate is all new including a new CSI.

NBC has a new ANDY BARKER, P.I. surrounded by an evening of THE OFFICE reruns, all of which are VERY funny episodes.

Robert Osborne is interviewing Jane FOnda tonight on PRIVATE SCREENINGS. I know there are some folks here who despise her enough to cringe just when they see her name, but I'm eager to hear stories about her career which has been diverse and interesting. And since UGLY BETTY is a rerun tonight, the 8 o'clock hour is open for me. TCMN repeats it at 11 p.m. after a showing of BAREFOOT IN THE PARK.

And it made me flash to that scene from the film Jeffrey where Nathan Lane plays the demented priest with a penchant for cast albums...the puppeteer controlling the strings of the characters on the My Fair Lady album cover.

I am VERY excited because I just saw the list of the month-long B-Musical series at FilmForum and there are about 10 I want to see, including HOLD THAT CO-ED, with John Barrymore, which I saw long ago on AMC. ARGENTINE NIGHTS with the Ritz Bros. and Andrews Sisters, which I have yet to see. One Wheeler and Woolsey. Man, I hope I can make it over there several times! Also HOORAY FOR LOVE.

I have last night's MEDIUM to watch today, and I'll probably put in more WILD WILD WEST reruns, too.

On the DVD for NEVER GIVE A SUCKER AN EVEN BREAK, there's a vintage documentary celebrating Fields by Wayne and Schuster. I started watching it last night, but while it's fine, I don't think it's going to offer anything I haven't already known or seen.

And it made me flash to that scene from the film Jeffrey where Nathan Lane plays the demented priest with a penchant for cast albums...the puppeteer controlling the strings of the characters on the the My Fair Lady album cover.

I love that entire sequence with Nathan Lane with his confessional plastered with posters from Broadway musicals. "Hello, Gorgeous!" Just hilarious.

It's so weird to me how a person can be in the bottom 2 one week (chris r and sanjaya) and then be safe in the weeks to come. I guess if we were going to get rid of sanjaya it had to be before his "fans" realized he was in real danger.

I knew he would not go last night. But i was really annoyed that he was not at least in the bottom 3.  No offense to the people who vote for him if they actually like him, but it's making me really annoyed at those who are voting cause they think/know he's the worst. I really do not want to see/hear this kid anymore.

I was sort of expecting haley and phil to be bottom 3. I was not too sure how popular chris s was. But since i gathered the guys were less popular than the girls it had to be him or sanjaya in the bottom.

I probably would have rather seen haley go (since i think chris has more talent). But i didn't really care either way. I liked chris so much in the beginning. but i have found that i've cared for him less and less each week.

When I was the Credit Union representative at Bi-Mart # 633 I would, once a year, attend the rep's meeting in Eugene. One year I won a (for the time) nice radio/cassette player. That was around 1987 or so.

And I won BK's Cinderella CD as a sparkling prize a couple of years ago. I listen to it quite often.

I was not surprised at all that Chris Richardson was safe. I think his fans assumed last week he was in no danger and voted for others or didn't vote at all, and the bottom two announcement was a wake-up call.

It's absurd that the good singers are exiting before Sanjaya, but so far no one who has been eliminated was a favorite of mine to win, so I've been able to stand the fact that Sanjaya is still on the show.

Still, if people are voting for him knowing he's the worst, then I blame the judges for ever picking him in the first place to be among the semifinalists. They got what they wanted, and now they have to live with it.

I'm sure this episode will divide fans (half will love it, half will hate it) but i really loved it.

It's surprising since i did not like niki and paulo (the two plane crash survivors who appeared out of no where this season).

I loved how this episode focused on their whole journey (for all seasons). Showing how they fit into various scenes. Showing how the scenes we've seen them in this year fit into the big picture.

And my gosh the ending was chilling!

You're right.  Chris Sligh has the best male voice of any of the top 12.  The problem is, I believe, that he simply refused to take the advice of any of the pros brought in to advise them on their vocals.

Each week, IIRC, the guest pro would say something about Chris' tendencies to ignore the basic structure of a song.  He never took their advice and his song performances have pretty much been all over the place and not memorable at all.

Having a voice isn't enough. One must learn to use it properly.

I watched his "last-week" performance last night on tape.  It was wonderful.  And Simon praised him fully for it.

Tuesday night, though, Simon again praised his performance but then had the brass to tell him his song choice the previous week was what got him into trouble.

Sure....but Sanjaya's didn't get HIM into trouble...neither his choice nor his delivery.

I find Simon's comments on the mark about 95% of the time.  But the other 5% often stand out as something blatantly idiotic.

I loved the mix of humor and drama.  I loved Sawyer's inability to recall who they were.

Mostly, though, I found it a bit disconcerting to witness Charlie's confession to Sun about the faux kidnapping he and Sawyer concocted as a diversion when Sawyer took and hid the guns.

It seems to me, in the cold light of day, that this was a moment in which Charlie got to clear his conscience of something and ask for forgiveness.

Given the nature of this season's revelations about Desmond's "visions" of Charlie's impending demise, which Desmond's actions keep delaying, this seems more than a bit ominous to me.

Of course, it may be that Charlie is cleansing his spirit in preparation for something else, too.

Oh, yes.  I lOVED the bits with Arzt!

Having just watched Season 1, I still have fits of giggles when I recall the episode that introduced Arzt....the one in which Jack, Locke, Kate, Hurley and Arzt set out for the Black Rock and the dynamite.

Best line came from Hurley after a stick of dynamite blew Arzt to smithereens:

"Dude......!"

Next best line, later in the episode, also from Hurley and directed toward Jack:

"Dude.....you've got some Arzt on you."

Third best line was from Arzt -- directed at Hurley -- just before Locke and Jack bring a box of dynamite from the cargo hold of the Black Rock:

"Some of us here have lost weight!"

I thought it telling how Simon didn't even seem to know the song "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying." Great thing someone so knowledgeable is a guru.

But I think you make a great point, MattH. When you are talking about whittling down from the thousands of people who auditioned for the show, when you come to the top 20, the three "judge" people should not allow anyone in there who they would not be comfortable winning it all. If Sanjaya wins, and I can definitely see him becoming such a cultural phenomenon that he does, they've only themselves to blame.

I didn't hate last night's episode, but I was disappointed.  The producers had been hinting that there was a lot more to Nikki and Paolo than meets the eye but I was expecting more than this.  It strikes me that an awful lot of effort (not to mention expense) went into what essentially resulted into a little morality play that served as a filler episode.

The show's stylists do all the hair.  The contestants just sit there and express their wishes.

Sanjaya credited one of the guys doing hair and said he'd told him he wished he could have a mohawk...so he did seven centered-on-the-head pony tails using Sanjaya's own too-long hair.

It looked like crap...but it certainly matched Sanjaya's performance.

DR RonPulliam, add me to the cheerers of your new plateau.

I've been thinking about Sanjaya and the manipulayions of show biz.  How do we know the public hasn't continually voted him off each week and the producers are ignoring him?  I don't believe in honesty on any of these manipiulated reality shows, and I think AI is no exception to the rule.  Sanjaya's complete ineptitude on so many paramount levels makes him a fascinating study in utter cluelessness.

I think it's cruelty and humiliation from AI keeping that poor fool on the program.

As for Sanjaya...

At this point, it seems to me that Sanjaya is taking advantage of his "invincible" status now.  I mean, what does he really have to lose at this point?  He can sing well.  He can sing not so well.  He can choose to shave his head.  He's gonna get the attention from the judges - and "America", regardless of what he does.  And I'm betting the producers are probably advising Randy, Paula and Simon to be careful with their comments since there seems to be a bit of "reverse psychology" as it were going on between them and the voters.

In any case... I have a sneaking suspicion that Sanjaya will make it to the final five.  :-\

I think it's cruelty and humiliation from AI keeping that poor fool on the program.

You give so little credit to the perversity of the voting audience! (Put in terms you'd appreciate: if the voters [from a pool of presumably at least semi-literate adults] can re-elect Bush, certainly the AI voters [from a pool of opposable thumb test-messagers] can enjoy a good joke.)

I know many have said he could win it all. But i don't believe that.  There are many more people who don't want him to win (than want him to win). The fewer contestants left the better chance he has of leaving.

Right now we have 9 (is that right?). I don't see him lasting more than a couple more weeks.

Anyone hear from Danise? I thought of her because beginning Tuesday one of her favorites, Michael Ball, is doing a series of six programs on BBC Radio 2

BALL OVER BROADWAY

Tuesdays from 3 April 4:30-5:00pm EST

Musicals continue to dominate Broadway, and there is no shortage of exciting new shows finding success down the Great White Way. In the latest six-part series of the award-winning Ball Over Broadway, West End and Broadway star Michael ball samples the latest in musical theatre entertainment. The series will feature six very different shows reflecting the best of contemporary Broadway. There'll be contributions from a powerful line-up of performers, writers and directors, as well as a few choice words from New York.

BALL OVER BROADWAY (http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/documentaries/#ball)

This isn't an operating link, it just takes you to the site so you can read about it and other radio "documentaries" on BBC Radio 2

The thing is, according to the sites that track the calls, Sanjaya hasn't even been one of the bottom SIX people the last couple weeks. Every week he lasts, the phenomenon will grow. People will say, "Hmm, wouldn't it be funny?" and his votes will increase. That's one scenario anyway.

Dear HHW Folk,

If any of you will be in Harrisonburg, Virginia tonight (ha, ha), the JMU Chorale will be performing a concert at Harrisonburg Baptist Church on South Main Street!

The concert will include selections such as Bruckners "Os Justi," Brahms' "Wo ist ein so herrlich folk," Moses Hogan's "Elijah Rock," Mendelsohnns (spelled HORRIBLY) "Psalm 100," and Von Williams' "O Clap Your Hands."

It's going to be a rockin' time.

In other news, GORGEOUS DAY!

Be back around midnight.

Today was one of those days where I felt "off" all day.  My mind seemed scattered.  My fingers weren't always working.  And I just had a hard time connecting with the singers in the room.

I was thinking that things would get better after lunch - being properly nourished and all - but I still felt a bit unsettled.  I don't think I ruined any auditions, and I don't think I embarrassed myself.  I just wish I had felt better about how my day went when I left the room.

And then...

The auditions took place on the fifth floor, and on the way out I decided to head up to the sixth floor to see who may have been up there.  -There were a ton of auditions going on today up there.  Well, I didn't spot anyone right off the bat, so I headed for the elevator, and then...

Surprise!

Lo and behold, I ended up running into someone I went to college with, and someone I really haven't seen since college - so, about 12-14 years or so.  Alas, this person was also someone I had a major crush on while I was in school...  And since he's also a pianist... And since we had become competitive while in school...  And that competition actually resulted in a quite the blow-up... And since he's now back in NYC trying to establish himself on the audition pianist circuit... Well...  Just plain weird.  And truly the last person I ever expected to run into today.  -Frankly, I thought I would have run into him in NYC long before today.

Yadda-yadda-yadda...

It was nice seeing him again, but the chance meeting brought up a lot of "stuff", and since I had already been having a weird day, well..

I'm feeling better now.  And that's all that matters.

Pages have been delivered to muse, but I'm told she probably won't get to them until tomorrow - normally, I don't like to start the next chapter until I've heard back, but I may.  Then again, I'm waiting for some research photos for the next chapter, so I could conceivably wait, or I could just write and add the detail stuff when it comes in.

As for the Topic of the Day...

I used to win various prizes from the dial-in contests on WRNL in New London, CT: concert tickets, county fair passes, t-shirts, etc.  -I had won so many times within a certain period, that I was actually banned for a year from calling in.

A couple of small lottery wins.  -My parents seem to have the luck in that department.  When my father retired from the Coast Guard, his office mates gave him 25 lottery scratchers.  There was one $1,000 winner, and one $5,000 winner in that batch!  And my mom tends to hit the Pick 3 every couple of weeks, and they've hit the Pick 4 a few times over the past couple of years - and that's a $5,000 prize.

I've won a few Sparkling Prizes, and I also was the Grand Prize winner one year when MTI would hold their weekly website contest - an autographed copy of one of Suskin's books, as well as a batch of OCRs.

According to an article on Playbill.com, Chinese Staging of I Love You, You're Perfect Will Play in Rep Off-Broadway (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/106929.html).  The article has one paragraph that I'm curious about:

Billed as the first time in American theatre history that a foreign production of an American musical will play in the United States, the 23-performance run is a co-production of Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre and Broadway Asia Entertainment and will play six shows weekly in rep with the long-running American production on West 43rd Street.

Didn't the complete Japanese production of Pacific Overtures play at the Kennedy Center during the big Sondheim shindig a few years ago?? ::)

I really loved it. And btw, did anyone else see middle daughter as the new Access Hollywood correspondent? She is so cute and even funnier than her character!

In the beginning i did suspect the husband might be "poisoning" her. But then i forgot about that. I was pretty surprised that the doctor was in on it.  ANd of course in true MEDIUM style, bits of info we are told at the beginning (the candy) comes back to be important.

I really loved all the stuff about joe's job. And am so happy that they integrate the family in the story. The funniest part was that joe forgot his daughters are also psychic!

Hi all. Long day but I learned lots and lots. It's definitely worthwhile. They tried to do a presentation through lunch. It was a really stupid thing to do. DR Jason has always looked good as far as I could see. He is just a handsome guy and I am really happy to hear that he is doing well!!

DR MBarnum, the Beefcake at the Opera might have converted you to the lyric stage this evening.  I'm back from the two Puccini oneact operas, Il Tabarro and Gianni Schicchi, both very well staged for Manhattan School of Music by Ron Raines' lovely wife Dona D Vaughn, who is the very first "Bobby" you hear on the OBC.  There were several shirtless stevedores in the opening 10 minutes of Il Tabarro and DR MBarnum would have passed out, thought the remaining 30 minutes were fabulous.  Several of the stevedores came back clothed to sing secondary roles in Gianni Schicchi, a hilarious comedy about a dead man and his estate.

The casts for both operas were quite wonderful and dona's staging was apropos for both, with a wonderful surprise evening.  some of these grad students will have good careers. I'm just bummed I cannot go back to see the alternate casts.

DR Cillaliz - are you sick of hearing Hang On Sloopy (http://www.ohiohistorycentral.org/entry.php?rec=1878) yet?

Actually it's been really quiet here. The official restaurant is somewhere else, so I'm guessing that must be where lots of the fans are.  I've been told that there will be more here tomorrow night. I haven't seen the ball players, but I've heard they are around.  So they must be getting sleep here because it's really quiet.

They do have the banners etc out, and lots of event info, fan info etc all over the lobby, so I'm guessing I'll see more people tomorrow night.

DP Colin and I watched the first episode of "Deadwood" last night.  I doubt it will ever shown on TV here.  I know DR Matt is a fan.  Great production values but is that "language" really necessary  to establish a Lawlessness"look".  Was the use of such language really part of that time?

According to authorities, the language was very much a part of its time. As the series progresses, the tone of the show reaches almost Shakespearen dimensions (you'll see if you continue watching) while retaining the rawness and violence that was almost matter of fact to such a rugged existence.

I spent the first part of the evening with the new DIsney made-for-cable film JUMP IN! In true Disney fashion, it's the story of a fellow who learns you must be true to yourself to live a happy and fulfilling life. Not a bad message and the cast is so attractive that the familiar message is ladled on with a smooth spread. But this is the nicest 'hood you're ever going to see. No gangs, a couple of bullies, and no one speaks profanity even when taunting or trying to drag someone into a fight.

The Jane Fonda interview on TCM was quite interesting. The concentration was on her film career, not her activism or fitness regimens, so lots of movies got mentioned. I was pretty disappointed that JULIA wasn't mentioned at all (except for a passing reference to Fred Zinnemann) nor her working relationship with Vanessa Redgrave, topics I was eager to hear about. But plenty did get talked about in a lively hour of chatter about the movies.

The concert went well...I did a duet of Porpora's Magnificat, which went very well, and my Chorale basically kicked some choral ass. We're lucky that Harrisonburg is chock full of fantastic churches, and that they're more than willing to let us use their spaces. The acoustic at the Baptist church we usually use is incredible, which made for a ROUSING rendition of "Elijah Rock."

We also performed a version of "The King of Love" that was arranged for Gerald Ford's funeral this past January. The arranger, Michael McCarthy, is a good friend of the director of choral activities at JMU, and sent us the manuscript for the piece. I'm 99% positive that this was the first performance of the piece since the funeral, which is pretty special. It's a beautiful arrangement of a gorgeous hymn.

Oh 9am technology classes, how I loathe thee.

-I decided to head out a few hours ago, and join some friends for a drink or two.  Well, I actually didn't drink, but I did hang out with them for a bit, and that was exactly what I needed.  Since I've practically been living at Chelsea Studios the past couple of weeks, I haven't really seen any "new" people in a while.  And the change of scenery was just what I needed to clear my head.

It's be fun, but Sat is a Grandlad day (which means about 5 hours of driving). Sunday Woody will work.

It usually takes me about 4 hours driving time each way. (and since Woody doesn't drive, that's an 8hr round-trip for me!)

When you go to work as an extra to you ever pretend you are a character with a backstory just for the heck of it?
