Hollywood smog hit the "Bat Masterson" set one day when actress Allison hayes was supposed to say, "Look!  Here they come over the hill."

I watched the Jane Fonda interview on TCM last night, and enjoyed hearing her speak about her movies.

It was a quick hour and lots of things were NOT mentioned, as DR MATTH  wrote, but she has had an interesting career and didn't steer away from some very personal (not political) issues.  Osborne made it clear in the intro that only her movie career would be talked about.

Her emotional moments about the suicide of her mother, the break up of her marriage to Roger Vadim, and her relationship with her father were all very interesting.

In language, both dysphemism and cacophemism refer to the usage of an intentionally harsh word or expression instead of a polite one; they are rough opposites of euphemism. “Dysphemism” may be either offensive or merely humorously deprecating, while “cacophemism” is usually deliberately offensive.

Examples of dysphemism include “dead tree edition” for the paper version of an online magazine, or the American military personnel’s use of “s**t on a shingle” for their common breakfast of creamed chipped beef on toast.

Dysphemism is as common as euphemism in everyday usage. Few sports teams actually slaughter or annihilate one another, and while a losing team may be disappointed or angry, they are unlikely to be shattered; few companies actually crush their competition; no one is actually dumb as a box of rocks.

Many of the same subjects can be dysphemized as euphemized, such as sex and death—a respected dead person may be said to have passed away, a disrespected one to be worm food or to have kicked the bucket. Oddly, some humorous expressions can be either euphemistic or dysphemic, depending on context, because terms which can be dysphemic can also be affectionate. Pushing up daisies, for example, can be taken as either softer or harsher than “died.”

There's an interesting sort of site here (http://www.stageagent.com/shows.php).

It's supposed to provide plot synopses and character breakdowns for plays, musicals, and operas - and in the case of music, vocal ranges.  Can't vouch for the accuracy of the information, but looks like a fun browse.

Today, I have another day at the NYPL.  I'm still looking for the critical edition of Peer Gynt in the new Edvard Grieg edition.  It couldn't be found last week, so they've had seven days to dig around for me.

Perhaps some laundry this afternoon when I return and then a trek to the Village to see DRs edi, Ben, Anthony, and anyone else showing up.

I don't think firing "well-paid" employees will help Circuit City. There is a location on 14th Street and Broadway at Union Square. I can't remember the last time I was in there. It's a poorly run store that was routinely re-organized and shuffled to try and make it look like a great electronics store. The prices were not low enough for me to purchase anything and the merchandise wasn't enticing. I expect they will downsize even more as the year continues.

MOVIE REVIEW | 'SACCO AND VANZETTI'

From Immigration to Anarchy
By MATT ZOLLER SEITZ

This feature filmmaking debut by Peter Miller (a PBS veteran and longtime collaborator of Ken Burns) hews to standard television documentary format: archival photographs and talking heads. But the movie's meat-and-potatoes style seems less a failure of imagination than a means of putting in the foreground its subject matter: the tale of Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti, Italian immigrants and outspoken anarchists charged with the 1920 robbery of a Massachusetts shoe factory and the murder of two of its employees.

The film's first half details Sacco and Vanzetti's personalities, upbringing and political beliefs; the beliefs are articulated via letters read by the actors John Turturro (Vanzetti) and Tony Shalhoub (Sacco). The second half follows the duo's two trials, six years of protests and appeals and 1927 execution.

Throughout, Mr. Miller incorporates relevant film clips (including Giuliano Montaldo's 1971 drama "Sacco e Vanzetti") and songs (notably Woody Guthrie's protest song "Red Wine," performed on camera by Arlo Guthrie). Testimony by historians — a couple of whom are moved to tears, contemplating the story — compares Sacco and Vanzetti's demonization by a society terrified of anarchism and immigrants to the mistreatment of Middle Easterners after 9/11.

Less didactic and more piercing is the sense that two human beings were killed despite inconclusive or conflicting evidence, as an example to fellow travelers. The judge in the case, Webster Thayer, told the jury, referring to Vanzetti, "This man, although he may not have actually committed the crime attributed to him, is nevertheless culpable, because he is the enemy of our existing institutions."

SACCO AND VANZETTI

Opens today in Manhattan.

Directed by Peter Miller; director of photography, Stephen McCarthy; edited by Amy Carey Linton; music by John T. LaBarbera; produced by Mr. Miller and Ms. Linton; voices of Tony Shalhoub (Sacco) and John Turturro (Vanzetti); released by First Run Features. At the Quad Cinema, 34 West 13th Street, Greenwich Village. Running time: 81 minutes. This film is not rated.

I agree with you, DR JRand, about Jane's interview last night on TCM. Well worth watching, and I should have recorded it so I could watch it again. The next time it comes on, I will record it to keep.

Strange that we've had so many reruns this part week because tonight features a lot of new episodes.

CBS' three dramas are new episodes.

NBC has new episodes of its entire slate.

ABC reruns a GREY'S ANATOMY but then has new episodes of its other shows.

A funny story from a friend of mine who is a church organist and plays a lot of weddings.

At one pre-wedding consultation, the bride's mother declared that Stravinsky's Rite of Spring was to be played as her daughter walked down the aisle.

After several confused moments, it was determined that what she had meant was that she wanted the "Simple Gifts" tune from Copland's Appalachian Spring.  Slight difference?

I don't know...I kind of like their first option.  You know, the section marked "The Sacrifice of the Virgin"?   ;)

Hello all from NY!

We had a very tiring day yesterday. We went to bed very late and then arose at 6AM to pack and cathc our flight. We got in at 1PM, dropper our stuff off at Peter's (another MILLER!) and headed to Gotham Sound where Greg went on a 2 hour shopping spree, getting those doo dads that sound guys love. I spent a little time at Colony Records and then we dined at the Edison (cheap, fast and not very tasty) and then had a wonderful time at CURTAINS. Afterwards we paid a late night visit to an old friend who is a neighbor of Fred and Skip. (I need to get the address, too!)

Went back to the VERY hot apartment for not enough sleep and then this morning did errands: hardware store, so Greg can do a little fix it stuff at Peter's, Lennie's bagels and then to Starbucks. My usual routine is to then walk to Riverside Park and have my bagel and cofee but this was the first time Greg has been there to go with me.

When we returned to the apartment, I received a call from my credit card company saying that someone had changed $600 worth of stuff at Macy's with my card, and they wondered if I was in NY. I then realized that during our travels my wallet had been stolen by a real pro. They got down to Macy's and used both of my credit cards, in a matter of minutes!

I couldn't believe it and had no idea how that could have happened as we weren't in a crowd of people.

We filed a police report and then walked back through the park, just in case, and went into the 96th Street subway, thinking that might be how this person got down to Macy's so fast. We poked through every trash can on the street and all the ones in the subway---looked on the tracks, too, just hoping to find my wallet. But then again, the perp had over $200 in my wallet, so he could have taken a cab, too.

At least tonight will be fun, meeting Ben, Ant and Larry! And some old Atlanta friends are coming to the late show, so we're looking forward to seeing everyone. I just wish I wasn't SO TIRED!

I know Fred said he was seeing the 5pm showing so we may see him leave as we arrive. There is a review of S & V in the New York Times today as well as short reviews in the two freebie morning rags Metro and AM New York.

We will look for Fred!

Some good reviews have come in, particlarly Variety, which comments on the structure and story telling, and actually mentions the editor! (First time I've ever seen my name in a review!)

Thanks for wishing ill to the evil-doer.

The only thing that I am REALLY SAD about is that the wallet contained my father's wedding ring, which I carry with me when I need extra luck. (This was from his marriage to my mom...they're not married anymore but it has great sentimental value to me.)

The other thing that was in the same zippered compartment was a pendant that my mother gave me. It had her birthstone, mine and my GaGa's, all in one. That is my other lucky talisman.

So I will rely on the good vibes of the DR's to help us with our opening night.

Ben - i'm most likely not making it to the 5 pm show.  It's looking like I  need to be by the phone until 5:30 for tax office matters.  (I'm going to try to get to the movie during the week, probably when the tax stuff is quiet on Pesach.)

But I bought two tickets, so i contributed to the gross.  :)

Thanks so much, FJL! You are beyond generous!

And after the events of today, we sure will be grateful for a FREE MEAL!

Anne Frank's Chestnut Tree Slowly Dying (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,262525,00.html)

Quote
Thursday , March 29, 2007
By Donald Snyder

AMSTERDAM —
“ … And the sun was shining as it’s never shone before in 1944. Our chestnut tree is in full bloom. It’s covered with leaves and is even more beautiful than last year.”

One of the best known and most poignant tragedies of the Holocaust is that of Anne Frank, a Jewish teenager who kept a diary of her more than two years in hiding from the Nazis in a cramped, secret annex of a building in Amsterdam in the Netherlands.

During her 25 months in hiding, Anne’s only connection to the outside world was a chestnut tree that gave her hope and comfort when she gazed at it from an attic window of her hideaway.

“ As long as this exists, this sunshine and this cloudless sky and as long as I can enjoy it how can I be sad.”

More than half a century later, gusty winds off the North Sea still buffet the bare, 150-year-old tree that gave Anne Frank strength.

It stands alongside a canal in a courtyard behind the house at 263 Prinsengracht, where the Franks hid upstairs. Seagulls still fly over the tree, swooping down suddenly to seek fish in the oily canal.

But now a deadly fungus is killing Anne’s chestnut tree.

Soon it will soon be cut down.

...

Here's an oldie but goodie we haven't told in a while.  I believe the joke is called "Don't you love farts?"

A cute little old lady goes to the doctor and says, "Doctor I have this problem with gas, but it really doesn't bother me too much.  The farts never smell and are always silent. As a matter of fact I've farted at least 20 times since I've been here in your office. You didn't know I was farting because they don't smell and are silent."

The doctor says, "I see. Take these pills and come back to see me next week."

The next week the lady returns. "Doctor," she says, "I don't know what the heck you gave me, but now my farts, although still silent, stink terribly."

"Good," the doctor said. "Now that we've cleared up sense of smell we'll work on your hearing."

I began my afternoon viewing with last night's ANDY BARKER, P.I. Again, a pretty feeble episode all told. I'm not sure how much more of a chance I'll give the show. I like Andy Richter on OLD CHRISTINE, but here, he and the actress playing his wife are just too precious for words, and their naivete gets old quickly.

Next, I watched another episode of THE WILD WILD WEST in color (as Quinn Martin Productions used to say). This one was called "Night of the Flying Pie Plates" and guest starred William Windom and a green skinned Leslie Parrish!!! She was playing an alien from Venus visiting Earth looking for gold to propel her spaceship. Of course, it was all a scam to bilk the yokels of their gold.

She was in an episode in Season One as well. I had no idea she was going to be in this episode, and when she stepped out of the spaceship, I was truly surprised.

Circuit City Lays Off Employees for Earning Too Much Money (http://www.abcnews.go.com/GMA/story?id=2994476)

Both of those movies smack of a brain malfunction... I am glad we dont have Circuit city up here. I would refuse to do business with them.

[shadow=color,glow width,#characters wide] Crapdoodle! [/shadow]

I woke up three times this morning BEFORE my alarm went off...and each time I thought it was Saturday and went back to sleep.  When the alarm screeched, I knew the ugly truth of it all.

Sigh.

Anyway....I managed to dress and get in to the office.  Here I sit, sinus pressure behind my eyes (alllergies), but otherwise ready to plow through the day and get this next weekend started.

Media Check...

In my CD player:  two Randy Newman CDs through very kind courtesy of Tomovoz!  After those will be "David Shire:  At the Movies" and then "Philip Quast:  Live At the Donmar."

In my DVD player:  "Ella Fitzgerald:  Live in '57 & '63."  I just got this today at Costco.  It's two live concerts that she did in Belgium in 1957 and Sweden in 1963.  Last night, I finally watched "Shock to the System" with Chad Allen.  I really liked this movie.  And the back story (I think Matt H. mentioned it, also) really adds dimention to the character of Donald Strachey. :)

Copland's Appalachain Spring is one of my favorite pieces.

I do too! Tonight will be very important to its future premiering in this new time slot. If it does OK or retains a great majority of the lead-in from IDENTITY, then NBC may think about renewing it. But if it sinks, NBC could pull it even before all the filmed episodes have aired.

It's so hard to define myself!

I am a "combination" of MBarnum with some Cason thrown in, a soupçon of Warren Beatty and a sprinkle of Brad Pitt, and I'm much older than all of them! Hence wiser! Oh, you said "define"?! ;)

I do too! Tonight will be very important to its future premiering in this new time slot. If it does OK or retains a great majority of the lead-in from IDENTITY, then NBC may think about renewing it. But if it sinks, NBC could pull it even before all the filmed episodes have aired.

RIANES was up against CBS's Basketball the last few weeks, now it"s CBS's Close to Home; the male BB fans are most likely to preder RAINS to Close to Home, so there is hope. Those of us who came tape one/watch another have no problem.

From the Wikipedia entry on LOVE OF CHAIR:

Naomi

Naomi refers to Naomi Foner, who was a producer on the show during the first two seasons and is the mother of actress Maggie Gyllenhaal and actor Jake Gyllenhaal.

Final Love of Chair skit

In the final “Chair” sequence, the sketch started normally. However, after performing a few actions the boy turned to face the camera and angrily interrupted the announcer who just said as always, "As our story begins, the boy is sitting" to declare "No, he isn't! The boy is quitting!" The background organ music suddenly stopped, and the camera changed to show a previously unseen door in a corner of the room. The boy quickly walked across the room and through the door, slamming it loudly behind him. After a moment's silence, the shocked announcer sputtered, "But...what about Naomi?" The scene then faded to black—and reopened on the entire cast of The Electric Company standing on a stage under a banner that read, "What about Naomi?" The cast sang a brief song that repeatedly asked "What about Naomi?" along with other questions about her ("Is she tall?" "Is she fat?"). The final lines of the song ran What about Naomi? What about Naomi? We shall never know.

What a day.  For the last two hours I've once again been dealing with this alumni association thing - we got our first no vote (we already have a majority), this from a guy who's on "official leave" from the board.  He wrote a long e-mail basically saying he wanted seven members of the current board to be able to convene at the end of a year and, in essence, decide if I've done a good job - in other words, those people, several of whom have definite agendas, can allow me to turn this thing around, make it successful, and then arbitrarily say goodbye.  Uh... no.

So, tonight, I think we either have to say we have a majority vote and that's that (what I didn't want to happen is what two or three people are trying to make happen - a lot of palaver - vote yes, vote no - no palaver necessary), or, one of two things will happen - I will withdraw my offer, or I will start a new organization immediately and their group can continue doing what they're doing.

Have done some terrific work, I have.  Finessed some letters, a resolution or two and dazzled a few callers with "Hi, you've reached.......this is Ron....how may I improve your day!"

They gave her ivs, and said it's a viral infection.  She said one of her friends in Green Valley was sick for 4 days last week so we think she caught whatever bug was going around.  Luckily she feels better tonight

I watched bits of the first episode and as much as I like Andy Richter, it seems that he's best when he's a second banana...like on "Old Christine" and as Conan's Ed McMahon. :-\

As to the alum association, given the e-mail that was sent with the no vote (it should just have been a no vote - no one asked for a discussion at this time), I'm now thinking that whether we have the majority or not, I may back off and wish them all well, because there are these two or three really negative folks and I don't like negativity and it infects everyone, and it's like at some point you say "why am I bothering."  I'll talk to the one person from the board who I would have on my governing board - she'll be back at six and we'll discuss this and make a decision.  We do have a majority vote right now, but, for whatever reasons, several people have not voted and I'm not that comfortable with that - I would at least like some vote from everyone who's able.

Well, all votes are in but not before this troublemaker woman sent out one more e-mail about by-laws (which no one has seen since the day they were written) and how she wants to find them and she's not sure where they are but can't we wait until Monday because she might find them - unfortunately for her, all votes had already been cast.  Her "concern" was we were doing this legally, and I say who would know and who would care.  She suggested maybe dissolving the current organization and starting something new - why?  We have the name - she's totally out of control - she's spent this entire week trying to cause trouble and get people to vote no.  Well, as of this evening the votes were 11 yes, 2 no.  I'd say that was a mandate, and an e-mail has been sent to everyone saying voting is done, the majority has spoken, and I am now running this organization.  The problem is, I don't think this woman will stop - I think it's become very personal for her for reasons I don't entirely understand other than I think she's served as President for five years (she resigned two months ago) and has never been able to do one single thing that meant anything.  The organization was dormant and pointless.  I think she's petrified that I will be successful and it will reflect badly on her.  She's one of these people who still behaves like she's in high school - it's a popularity contest and calling people behind everyone's backs, and all the back-biting is so reprehensibly stupid.  We'll see what her reaction is, but I have not yet written my e-mail of hello, thanks, and let's go on - because if I sense she's not going to stop, I will not waste my time and they can all just continue their downward slide to nowheresville - it's too much work.

Have fun DR JOSE!!!

Tempo Tempo - I guess that is tempii

And I did have fun today!  -As opposed to yesterday, which was not fun at all.

Some very good singers came in today, and it was a pleasure to play for them.  And there were a few not-so-good singers who were also a "pleasure" to play for.  ;)  Since today was an audition call for their season, there were a bunch of "monologue only" auditions which were also good - and fun to sit through.

And as always happens in the waiting area at the Equity building, I ran into a bunch of people I haven't seen in years.  And today's chance meetings were much "nicer" than yesterday's.

Early in my career as a reference librarian, I was asked for a book titled

A Century of Loneliness.

It took a while to figure out that they really wanted

One Hundred Years of Solitude.

That sort of reminds of that unfortunately doomed production of 42nd Street that played in Russia a few years ago.  The character names "Anytime Annie" was "translated" as "Spread Your Legs Annie" in Russian.

Media Check...

Those are some amazing Ella performances.  If you want a true treat, add her Cote d'Azur recordings to your CD collection.  Every time I listen to them, still say, "Wow!"

Well, I've been going round and round with US Air over a $50 credit I want to apply to this current ticket.  Three different reservaton clerks on the phone told me I have to schlep out to LaGuardia tomorrow to redeem it.  After complaining to their "manager," he told mer any travel agent can handle it!  I've also sent an angry email to US Air customer service telling them that their rude attitude about no bereavement fares cost me $538 on an original $228 ticket price.  What robbery! What effrontery! What a crock.

I very much enjoyed the Jules Dassin interview on the RIFIFI DVD. There are also interviews with him on the Criterion versions of NIGHT & THE CITY and THE NAKED CITY, but the one on RIFIFI is very thorough not only about the making of the film but also more background on the Blacklist period and other topics.

DR edisaurus - Well, I hope that the crook is caught when he s/he tries to use your cards again.  I know that some card companies will send out a fraud alert when a stolen card is used.  -I've seen people questioned at the check out.  *And I still remember getting a "CUT UP CARD" message on the Zon machine once when I was working at the music store - the card was reported as stolen.

Next, I began rewatching 16 BLOCKS, a DVD I got as a Christmas present and watched in December. The HBO-HD version came on today, but it was cropped to 1.78:1, so I thought I'd rewatch the whole image in its original aspect ratio even if it was only in upconverted high definition rather than the real thing.

I sampled another episode of GHOST WHISPERER tonight. A little different from previous episodes since the ghost wasn't actually present until near the end of the episode. Unusual and entertaining.

Some stupid oaf at the CBS affiliate here forgot to flip the HD switch for the first half hour, so I watched the first half in standard definition before he woke up and switched it over to the HD feed from CBS.

RAINES featured Laurie Metcalf as a homeless woman found shot, The case ended up being surprising and quite sad as we learned more about her and about a nefarious scheme being undertaken in her name.

And LAW & ORDER featured the return of Tovah Feldshuh as feisty attorney Danielle Melnick defending a father who murdered his daughter's biology teacher for teaching evolution instead of creationism. As usual, there was a lot more to the case than that, all of which came out in the open by the end of the hour.

YIKES!

Quote
WEEHAWKEN, N.J. -- A New Jersey Transit commuter bus crashed into the center divider of Interstate 495 near the Lincoln Tunnel Friday night, causing major traffic delays.

The accident occurred at 7:30 p.m. and involved a bus bound for Paterson from the Port Authority Terminal in midtown Manhattan, said Dan Stessel, a spokesman for NJ Transit.

More than 60 people were on board the bus at the time of the accident, NewsChannel 4 reported.

Seven people with serious injuries, including the female bus driver, were also transported to hospitals. Officials said at least 26 others were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Crews worked on the people on the bus, which departed from the Port Authority Bus Terminal and was headed for Patterson along Route 90.
Stessel told members of the media that he did not have information about how fast the bus was traveling when it struck the divider. The front end of the bus hung up on the guardrail.
Emergency crews from NJ Transit and the Port Authority police responded, using ladders to remove some passengers.
The accident forced closure of the outbound lanes of the Lincoln Tunnel helix, causing massive traffic backups.
The cause of the accident was not immediately known.

....They just showed the traffic back-ups in midtown/Theatre District due to everyone trying to leave the city via the Lincoln Tunnel.  Gonna be a long night for some of the bridge and tunnel crowd.

At one point during a commercial during GHOST WHISPERER tonight, I flipped over to ABC which was rerunning the second season episode that brought Denny Duquette back to Seattle Grace beginning a long, loving, and emotional story arc for his character and Dr. Izzy Stevens. I didn't stop to watch it since I was into GHOST WHISPERER, but I took the second season of GREY'S ANATOMY off the shelf and put the DVD for that episode in the player to enjoy it at some point tomorrow.

I agree, and I think the producers were lucky to get him to succeed Richard Harris in the role. In fact, I'm not sure Harris would have been up to the demands of the role in this upcoming POTTER film. In the two films he did, Harris seems very frail, and Dumbledore has never been anything like that.

Back from dinner.  No new e-mails, so maybe the storm will die down and we can just proceed like normal people.  Amusingly, I asked how this woman went from resigning the presidency to being on the board - I was told she was voted in.  I asked by whom.  I was told by those at that meeting.  I said that I, a board member, was never told about such a vote nor invited to vote or even discuss it.  I said, where does she get off talking about by-laws now when that sort of thing happened regularly (not to mention that most people on the current board have been there for ten years - I have never seen nor been told of any voting in that entire time).  Furthermore, and most amusingly, I was then told that the second president of the organization had suspended the by-laws and everyone voted with him to do so - which means, effectively, there are no current in effect by laws.

It's hard to believe someone could go inside your purse and find just your wallet and you would not notice.

It's a standard "dip" technique - women often clutch their handbag straps firmly - stealing the whole purse draws immediate attention. A clever dip can unfasten a purse and snatch a wallet in a single smooth pass.
