Title: THERE IS NOTHING LIKE A SUCCESSFUL INSTALLATION
Post by: bk on January 03, 2004, 12:01:28 AM
Now, you haven't skipped the notes, have you?  If you skipped the notes we shall have to simply bitch-slap you from here to eternity and to hell and back, because we slaved over a hot computer to write said notes and they simply must be read.  Now that you've read them you know what to do, so do post away.

I'm not really a speed reader. Maybe I just type faster.
DR Jose: "Always logged on" does not quite mean that. It just means that when you get to HHW you don't have to log on.

Quote from TCB
Quote
Purple tights notwithstanding, I think Brother Jed might be miffed at being branded a fairy -- lilac or otherwise.

Perhaps if I donned the wings I wore as Teen Angel in Grease in February along with my recent purple tights, I'd be a more convincing fairy.  If it doesn't have to be lilac... and can be 6 feet tall... and 240 lbs... and have a beard... :)

I must tell you that I finally figured out how to see what is being "searched" for at the site (when we changed the software for the notes, I was never really told how) - I'm happy to report that the merry searchers are still with us, searching merrily away, although why at this late date they feel the need to do so is anyone's guess.  They must really have nothing better to do with their time, I suppose.  Either that, or they are simply beyond repair as "human" beings.  But, we welcome them with open arms and we hope they find what it is they're looking for.

You know, the entire time I was reading the notes, I never once had my mind in the gutter. I didn't even GET why it would be gross until I reread it. Strange.

On a side note, I think Laura has been drinking.

Sarah - Laura's not drunk, merely bringing back her flirting skills!

Laura - True, your current pic isn't all that sharp, but it's a very nice one from what we can see. :)

I am sure my niece will be happy with a tall fairy who can lift the spell possible given by her wicked fairy uncle. borrowed wings from A Teen Angel (even Frankie Avalon's) would be quite OK. Actually the one year old Juliette is indeed beautiful and I (don't like babies) and the only spell is the one she puts her family under. I thought her mother was delightful at that age too. I shall post a proud great uncle's photograph of mother and child. (or I will if I can!).

Hard for me to disagree. Karalyn is researching for her PHd at present - nearly there. She works in the field of AIDS research as is internationally known in her field - HIV positive woman and pregnancy etc. I am indeed a very proud of her.

Geez, my sleep schedule is completely messed up.  Here it is, 1:30am, I slept only 2 hours last night (well, late this morning), and yet I'm wide awake.  I should probably just force myself to go to bed now, nonetheless (three words in one... that's just cheating at Scrabble, that is).  So, goodnight... see all y'all later on!

Lovely picture TOMOVOZ!  Of course the photographer had some great material there!

CD - Perry Como the 16 most Requested Hits

VCR - AUNTIE MAME:  "Mr Applewhite what are you doing in that hole with Mr. Bibberman?  I'm sorry there is NO San Francisco!"

DVD - LOVE IS A MANY SPLENDORED THING.  I start crying when the music starts and don't stop for about 90 minutes.  "You look in the mirror to see truth.  I do not, for in the mirror what is left is right and what is right is left."  "Do not awaken a sleeping tiger."  "Especially not in a small boat!"

Can't sleep. Woke up around 2 am and have been awake ever since. So I finally gave in and got up.
Thank you for enlightening me about karma, DR's - and thanks for giving me karma, Swishy.
Lovely pic, DR Tomovoz.
DR Jrand 53 - Must tell you that when I was a teenager, my best friend Carol and I went to some mall in Toronto where Gordon Scott was making a Personal Appearance. We did it as a silly lark, having nothing better to do that paticular Saturday afternoon. We got there late, however, and he was already leaving. We spotted him in the parking lot in a black convertible. He was wearing a body-hugging black polo shirt, muscles rippling, and tight black pants. A symphony in black. As the convertible pulled away, something took over my body and I found myself running after the car through the parking lot, shouting out his name. Now you have to understand that I wasn't that kind of kid. No way! Part of me was watching this display, stunned and mortified that an artiste (that's what I considered myself) would do something so childish and crass. The weird(er) part of this story is that I can't remember whether he stopped or not. All I recall is this moment of utter freedom as I ran after Tarzan.

I tried adding a picture to my profile, but apparently it's too big.  One gets used to hearing such things (now, TCB, cut that out--- a Jack Benny reference).  I'll have to find another photo or get DRMusicGuy to make the picture smaller.  I probably have the right equipment but don't know how to use it. (Another thing one gets used to hearing).

The minds started out in the gutter with Bruce's notes, and apparently they're staying there.  Fasten your seatbelts! It's going to be a bumpy day (to paraphrase Bette Davis as Margo Channing)!!!!!!!

In the CD player is Superman - perfect accompaniment for domestic chores. It's been awhile since I heard it, and the score is as winning as ever: snappy music and clever (but not in-your-face clever) lyrics.

DR Tomovoz: what an exquiste photo. Mazeltov (which is practically an anagram of Tomofoz). And DR JRand53, keep the Auntie Mame lines and the Broadway photos coming.

Love the pictures from NYC of 1993. Such memories of those shows in the photos. Loved them (though I would rather have seen FALSETTOS win Best Musical over CRAZY FOR YOU).

Media check:

CD - DREAMGIRLS IN CONCERT

VCR - 1992 Winter Olympic women's figure skating competition.

DVD - A.I. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE followed by something fun like THE OUT-OF-TOWNERS.

I finally had to replace my trusty Memorex VCR yesterday. It had been faltering for weeks, and last night it just would not play properly so it was out with the Memorex and in with the Samsung (which I bought on sale last year in anticipation of this occurrence).

DR Matt you have a new photo!

DR Andrea: That is the fastest border inspection in history. I never get through that fast. They always want to know where I'm going, what I'm going to do there ...  One time I actually got a bit flustered. It was so bizarre, but the guy was really grilling me (I was going to NYC).  He wanted to know every detail about my trip. And I guess he was making me nervous. But he wanted to know exactly which shows I was seeing. And even though I knew in my mind what I wanted to see (although I hadn't gotten the tickets yet). My mind went blank. But since I knew I had to give him an answer I ended up saying "Fosse" and "Chicago" (which were both playing, but I wasn't seeing either). It was totally bizarre.

Does anyone know when the cds for BOUNCE or the new WONDERFUL TOWN are coming out?

Btw, DR Emily: I also find it very strange how much a payphone costs in NYC. Here (as you know) it's 25 cents for as long as you want. Do other cities have time limits (as well as the higher prices)?

Welcome to new DRs Penny and Robin.

I love babies and I thought that pic is so cute!

BK good luck with your dish (now you can tape Alias!).

DR Emily: You are almost a goddess, hurry.

I enjoyed my DVDs from last night: Daddy Day Care and Emma and Alex (or is it the other way around).

They weren't genius. But the first was funny and the second was sweet (although there were a few things that should have been fixed).

Have a good Saturday everyone.

Yes, Jennifer, I put up the new pic to celebrate the new year. Thanks for noticing.

Just read a long list of Warners Special Edition DVDs coming out in Region 2 releases this year, and I'm hopeful that they'll just port them over to Region 1 while they're at it. The ones that interested me most were the MGM (and RKO) Marx Bros. collection, an Errol Flynn collection (didn't have which titles, but I'm sure hoping for THE PRIVATE LIVES OF ELIZABETH AND ESSEX, THE SEA HAWK, and GENTLEMAN JIM), FORBIDDEN PLANET and KING KONG special editions, and a Johnny Weismuller/TARZAN boxed set.

Better start saving my pennies now!

Ditto.  Such a gorgeous family portrait.  Heavenly.

Well, in the dvd player, for some odd reason is Cliff Richard in THE YOUNG ONES.
In the cd player is of course, Cam Clarke, WICKED, Connie Francis' BEST OF, an obscure American rockabilly artist - Ral Donner (who sounds remarkably like Elvis, only with a vibrato) and 007: THE BEST OF BOND.
I think the appearance of Jason Graae at the Kennedy Center is still in the vcr.

Well, Kerry, of course you knew that I'd like Cam; you know me so well.

Have any of you Diet Cherry Coke lovers ever tasted a Cheerwine or Diet Cheerwine? You'd be spoiled forever if you ever had one of those. They're a regionally bottled soft drink that's more cherry tasting than a Diet Cherry Coke but HIGHLY addictive.

Good Morning all.  Sorry I was E & T yesterday but I think you will forgive me.  I wasn’t feeling very well again.  I stopped off at the drug store to pick up a prescription last night and even the druggist said I looked very pale.  I took my BP and it was 147/103.  By the time I got home, I was seeing spots.  I made it in the door, told Mom I was going straight to bed and did just that.

It was so weird, I felt like I was falling even though I was lying flat in bed.  I was almost to the point where I thought I was going to call 911 but I didn’t want to scare Mom and the dogs with an ambulance coming to the door.  I managed to go to sleep—fully clothed from work until about 2 when I woke and was finely able to get undressed.  I slept some more until about 10:30 this morning.   I still feel a bit weak and dizzy but I think I’m past the worst of it.

I wanted to rake the leaves up in the front yard but I think that’s out.   I think I’m going to take it easy today and tomorrow.  If I can't shake this, I may call my doctor and  go over to the emergeny room.

Sorry Jane, but I don't know the eposide names of JAG so I can’t answer your question.

I hope the skier was found alive and well.

Welcome and happy posting to the newbies.

Bruce, I hope your satellite dish gets installed and works well for you today.  I also hope your getting the Sci Fi Channel. It's the best.

Talk to ya'll later.

Good Morning!  Good Afternoon!

Great pics all around!

Media Check - Nothing, except for the demo CD of the songs in the show I'm working on - sung and played by the composer/lyricist/playwright himself.

DR MattH - I LOVE Cheerwine!  The 7-11s in Richmond used to carry it, but it doesn't seem to make it that far north anymore.  I usually buy a few six-packs whenever I have to drive in/thru North Carolina.

Good afternoon/morning to y'all. I REALLY need to fix my sleeping schedule. I cannot keep staying up until 4 and getting up at 12-1. Especially since school begins again on Monday, :(.

In my CD is a mix CD that I found one day under a dresser in a beach house we were staying at. It has a lot of fun songs, Michael Jackson, Madonna, pretty much every hit from the 80's.

DVD is eeeeeeempty. My computer DVD was enabled when I had it fixed.

In my VHS is NOT a bootleg tape of Cabaret that my friend DIDN'T buy online and DIDN'T lend to me. It's not that good anyway.

MBarnum: You think a 13 lb cat is giant?! I have two cats, and both are at least 17, if not more. We're trying SO hard to get them to lose weight, we've even gone so far as to only feed them non-fatfood, every other day. Yet they STILL don't lose weight.

Tomovoz, that is a gorgeous picture!

By the way Panni, I think you are not the only one on this board who would be likely to chase after Gordon Scott! LOL!

Forgot about media check:

CD: Right now I am listening, once again, to the soundtrack of PAKEEZAH.

VHS: Last night I watched FRONT PAGE WOMAN with Bette Davis and George Brent and then THEY CALL IT SIN with Loretta Young and David Manners. Both very enjoyable films taped off of TCM recently.

DVD: Indian (Bollywood) film KATI PATANG (DRIFTING KITE) which is a remake of the Barbara Stanwyke film NO MAN OF HER OWN.

Keith Andes sang in that! He must have forgotten! Well, I must definately watch it next time it aires!! You know, if they could release a George Maharis album you would think someone could at least have had Keith Andes record an album!

Sorry Jane, but I don't know the eposide names of JAG so I can’t answer your question.

I hope the skier was found alive and well.

Welcome and happy posting to the newbies.

Danise I hope you feel better. I don’t need to be sick to have that falling sensation.  It happens often while I’m falling asleep.   LOL.

I’m sure you didn’t watch JAG last night.  If you missed it, and it isn’t a rerun I can send it to you.  Just let me know.

Do get well quickly!!!

Panni, I think I've told my Gordo Scott story here before, but I was sandwiched between Gordo and Denny Miller, two former Tarzans, at an Edgar Rice Burroughs convention a few years back (Dum-Dums, they call them, after the gathering of Apes in the novels).  They were signing stuff and I was signing my Dragonheart novel and some scripts of mine (one the first version of Princess of Mars...called by the President of the La Chapter of the Burroughs Bibliophiles, the most Burroughsian script ever).  Denny was gracious and warm and the fans really adored him.  Gordo was sullen, aloof, and a bit of a pill and mostly concerned with making money. (Wish my scanner was working...I have a picture of me between them).

Bruce,  caught the tail-end of one of your Penn and Teller:  Bullshit episodes last night...one about debunking psyhics like John Edwards...Very interesting.

Excuse me for living, but we haven't had a post since I left?  Over an hour?  No, no, no, no, no, that will not do, that will simply not do.  That is unseemly.  How can we have a successful installation with no posts?

Also, where in tarnation IS Francois?  Has anyone tried e-mailing him?

Also, where in tarnation IS everyone?  I'm sitting here gloating in the gloaming.  Why you might ask, is BK sitting here gloating in the gloaming?  Well, I'll tell you why.  As I mentioned, I was "banned" from a certain DVD chat board because someone had posted some comments from Mr. George Feltenstein that no King Kong DVD was on the schedule because they were still trying to locate better elements for the transfer.  There were several disappointed responses.  I posted that everyone might want to take everything Mr. George Feltenstein said with a large container of salt.  The owner of the board then posted a strong rebuke saying I should be careful about calling people a liar without having proof.  I pointed out to him that I had called no one a liar and that people were free to believe what they so chose.  Then I got angry and posted a strong rebuke to the owner, because that was the third time he'd done this to me - misinterpreted my words, and been totally out-of-line to boot.  I suggested he ban me from his childish, filled with people who don't know what they're talking about site, because obviously people who were informed and who actually know from whence they speak really weren't welcome there.  They, of course, removed that post within thirty seconds and banned I was, which was and is fine.

Well, blow me over with a swizzle stick, but Warners seems to have announced that a two-disc Special Edition of King Kong will be out before the end of the year.  OOPS!  When I made my initial post I knew that that was the case because I knew that they'd been working on it for over a year.  So, it looks like Mr. George Feltenstein wasn't being forthright (for whatever reasons) and it looks like my post was right on.  Think the owner, the immature dweeb known as Ronald Epstein (who admits that he never watched a black-and-white film or a classic film until the advent of DVD) will apologize?  I do - on the 12th of Never.

Now, should any of you wish to mosey on over there, register, and post in the King Kong thread that OOPS looks like Mr. Kimmel was right and looks like Mr. Feltenstein wasn't exactly being forthright, and looks like Mr Epstein shouldn't have jumped on Mr. Kimmel and should apologize, well, feel free to do so.  The address is http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htforum/index.php

Once registered, scroll down to Home Theater Software, click and you'll find the topics and you'll find the King Kong thread.

I'm back from NYC, and while it's nice to be home, I do miss the city already!

DVD--nothing lately

VHS--Les Trois Couleurs: Rouge

CD--The Baker's Wife OCR, Skinner's and Ripleys's Duets, The Last 5 Years OCR

Yes, yes, please help! "My" Seany hasn't been around (and he has a girlfriend anyway), so I'm getting a little rusty! Wah, I miss him!

Laura, you are a very accomplished flirt!  I think Jed and others have attested to that!

Jrand--Love the pics, I hope you will post more!

Tomofoz--Also a lovely pic...Juliette is beautiful.

The CD player is being temperamental again.  I am happy to say we finally have an AM station here that plays great music by artists such as Como, Ella, Sinatra, etc.  Currently I am listening to Lullaby on Broadway.   We finished SEABISCUIT so nothing is in the DVD.  We have a well used tape of CASABLANCA we might watch.  Someone mentioned a new DVD release last year I would like to get.  Tonight we will be recording the 1949 film THE WINDOW.  For an interesting article on the film and it’s star Bobby Driscoll, check out the following link: http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?s=b87b14a972c93675895bdad594299ca1&p=123350#post123350

I saw "The Return of the King" last night.

I get fahrklempt just thinking about it.

Sean Astin deserves an Oscar.  An emotional tour-de-force performance if ever there was one!

Contrary to other comments made about its length, I thought it was magnificent and moved rapidly.  There wasn't one "fucking epic battle"* too many for me!

During the film's final hour, I spent a considerable amount of time wiping away tears and sniffling.

Heaven knows what Peter Jackson will add in his expanded DVD version of this last film -- but I can hardly wait!

I merely pointed out that Mr. Kimmel was correct, that Mr. F. (even though he produced one of my favorite cds of 2003 - GYPSY) was *mistaken.*
Words to the effect of "Truth will out," and that I sorely would miss the wit and wisdom of Mr. Kimmel.
I even included the quote from THE DIGITAL BITS http://www.thedigitalbits.com/rumormill.html (http://www.thedigitalbits.com/rumormill.html)
which backs up everything BK had said previously on the HTF.
Trust me, it was nothing incinderary - I save that for discussions of the joys and pleasures of THE WICKER MAN - merely a post which simply and non-confrontationally pointed out the error of the forum's ways.
I have since reposted twice - for some reason, for about one half hour, I was not allowed to post, modify or reply on the HTF at all - in two seperate threads.  Maybe I'll be the next banned member.

Never once did I mention that I knew of the childish banning of BK, nor that I even knew BK on a personal basis, and consider him to be a friend, whose opinion(s) I trust.

I have a feeling we're living in a fool's paradise here. After the balmy temperatures for the last two or three weeks and almost no rain, our forecast calls for ice storms next week! The last one of those we had (last winter) knocked out power for about 2 million homes.

Atilla is drilling - or should that be Attila is driling?  In any case, the hun is wiring and drilling and moving things around and I do hope no wires get pulled out of anything because that means the Wiring Man would have to come here and that wouldn't be so much fun for either one of us.

Don't get me wrong, for the most part I enjoyed the Hell out of Return of the King, but as for the tears...I thought far too many flowed on the screen.  Every time I turned around someone somewhere was turning on the waterworks.  I really thought I'd scream, if I saw one more tear trickle down yet another grimey cheek.  I agree with Frank Capra: "I used to think drama was when the hero cried; it's when the audience cries."  I think there are very effective weeping scenes, but they must always be used in restraint.  My credo is the Frank Loesser quote on my post:  "The heart must bleed; not slobber."  It's a fine line that must be walked between genuine sentiment and cheap, easy sentimentality.  Anger and tears are always the easiest emotions for actors to access and some folks just go to the well too often.  I think in Return of the King could have been a little less moist.   I think they also could have chosen from about three or for endings they had...I felt like we were getting epilogue after epilogue.  When the bad guy's destroyed, the movie's over folks, get the big birds in there and our heroes out of there and wrap up everything nice and tidily, let's not dribble on with four or five more scenes.

I too am looking forward to the extended version of RETURN OF THE KING, then I want to watch all three extended-version parts in sequence and see how it all shakes down.  But, hey, I've enjoyed it...I think I still liked the first part best so far...more character, more mystery, everything better blended, we also lost a powerful character too early...Sean Bean was wonderful.

Tomovoz...I've seen Fairy Tale (or is it Faery Tale?) with Peter O'Toole (one of my favourite actors) as Conan Doyle and found it immensely enjoyable.  Having become sort of a Conan Doyle authority when I did my Sherlock Holmes films (and having met his last surviving daughter), I was somewhat familiar with the story and have a book entitled The Coming of the Fairies by Doyle, relating the incident about which the movie is based.  It's hard to imagine that anyone could have been fooled by such blatantly phony photographs.  It's quite interesting that Doyle, who created a character famous for his reasoned, deductive logic, was later taken in by frauds like this and various spiritualists and psychics.

Matt H...Ingrid Bergman is wonderful in practically everything she does.  I've not seen Angel Street on stage, but I've performed it, the Charles Boyer role.  The play is a bit different than the movie...The detective does not become a romantic interest.

My review:  "Charles Pogue stars as Mr. Manningham...in a fine portrayal."

[size="5"]I'm Back![/size]

(Well, for now, anyway.)

Of course, it was difficult getting here, having been bitch-slapped silly by BK's lovely daughter.  But at least it is good to hear that she is perhaps the only person to have found her way out of the corn, where she was sent a couple of years ago by Billy Mumy, as I understand it.

I won't bore you with my troubles--they bore me enough as is--but I will just say that it has grieved me deeply of late not to be chatting with the most wonderful people in the world on the most jiggy web site in human history.  I haven't even been reading, and lo! I have not even read today's posts yet.  But as we were moaning and groaning over the inhumanity of the universe and other topics today, my Joe said he would not tolerate my continued absence from this here place.  So here I am.

Among my meæ cuplæ is not having thanked all of you great folks for my birthday wishes some two weeks and a year ago.  So here you are:

[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]Thank all of y'all for the wonderful birthday wishes![/move]
[move=right,scroll,6,transparent,100%]You're the greatest, guys![/move]
 [move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%] ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D[/move]

Topic of The Day:

CD Player:  Deborah Downey, Here's to Life.  She has been winning Cabaret awards in LA, and I am sure Dear Reader Donna of Cabaret West knows her.  Anyone else?

VCR:  Reign of Fire, a really excellent film with Christian Bole, about Dragons--and my Joe loves dragons--having taken over most of the modern world and an intrepid bunch of Limeys--aided by some Yanks--who set out to kill the one male dragon.  Wonderful to see, in this day and age that a fantasy can still be filmed that is based on writing, characters, and cinematography rather than just cartoonish digital effects.

DVD Player:  Leslie Stevens' Incubus with, yes, William Shatner.  I am hoping to transcribe the entire Esperanto text for use in my class next fall--no mean feat with Shatner's execrable pronunciation.  Well, at least he never strikes the patented Shatner Agony Pose in the entire movie.

Book Shelf:  Ethan Mordent[sic!]'s One Last Kiss.  A fun read, very informative, with perhaps a mite too much vitriole, but hey, what good is mustard without a bit of a bite?

Attila tells me he's almost done - he made a couple of boo boos despite my telling him to be careful - he accidentally unplugged all the cables from the DVD player, but he put them back where they belonged (like Dolly) and now it's working fine again.  Then, he didn't notice that I needed hi-def for the receiver, so now he has to drill another hole and bring another line in.

As I mentioned ealier, I sent two count them two scathing letters to Ron Epstein at the hometheaterforum, two e-mails worthy of Mr. Charles Pogue.  Do you know what the infantile Mr. Ronald Epstein did?  He blocked e-mails from the account I registered with.  Oh, well - I just resent them from another account.  OOPS.

Well, it is good to see you again WFO! Don't be such a stranger!

Besides being suave, JRand53 is also one heck of the nicest people I have ever met on the internet! If our states weren't so far removed from one another I am most positive he and I would have loads of fun being movie viewing buddies as he is one of the few people that I know who has some of the same film tastes as I do!

Speaking of movies, I just finshed watching a glorious pre-code film from 1933 called BEAUTY FOR SALE! Lots of laughs and some drama too... with the very lovely Madge Evans, the very amusing Una Merkel, and an array of other 1930s characters! All about girls working in a posh beauty salon in New York. See it if you can!

Minx is 100% purebred Siberian Husky.
The photo is one of her in the summer, when we get her coat trimmed; Huskies tend to not do well in the Pittsburghian summers; but, Minx will be turning THIRTEEN in a few short days. . .she's well-fe, well-cared for and exercizes daily.

She does look like a clipped husky but I had never seen one before. LOL.  We use to trim our Samoyed as she was impossible to brush but left the huskie alone.  She is very cute.

Hey DR Tom from Oz and Jrand: I've done the refresh thing too!  Maybe it's a god thing :)

BK you made me laugh when I read about you re-sending your meanie email. They sound very funny.

Well I ate bread (pumpernickel) for the first time in like a month. It was good. My diet has been going very well (although it would be going much better if I exercised more). It is so hard to exercise in the winter. I could swim. I used to swim twice a week. But I have not done that in months.

I think I will use my rebounder. And pilates. And the exercise bike.  I do feel much better though (which is good). Although I still want to be at my original weight (and I don't think i'm there yet).

Oh and on New Year's eve I had my favorite General Taos. Yeah for chicken!

Well, I've got some dish - I've got the dish.  I've been successfully installed, although not without annoyance.  Once Attila was done then he had to phone Direct TV to activate.  I had to get on the phone and then the idiot had no clue what I'd ordered four weeks ago, so we had to go through THAT whole thing, but finally I'm dished and I see images on my TV so that is good.

Now, if one of our techno-hainsies can just give me the reader's digest version of how to record things on Tivo that would be grand.  In other words, how do I tell it what program to record when?  How do I record something if I'm just seeing it live and want it?

57 CHANNELS (AND NOTHIN' ON)

I bought a bourgeois house in the Hollywood hills
With a truckload of hundred thousand dollar bills
Man came by to hook up my cable TV
We settled in for the night my baby and me
We switched 'round and 'round 'til half-past dawn
There was fifty-seven channels and nothin' on

Well now home entertainment was my baby's wish
So I hopped into town for a satellite dish
I tied it to the top of my Japanese car
I came home and I pointed it out into the stars
A message came back from the great beyond
There's fifty-seven channels and nothin' on

Well we might'a made some friends with some billionaires
We might'a got all nice and friendly
If we'd made it upstairs
All I got was a note that said "Bye-bye John
Our love is fifty-seven channels and nothin' on"

So I bought a .44 magnum it was solid steel cast
And in the blessed name of Elvis well I just let it blast
'Til my TV lay in pieces there at my feet
And they busted me for disturbin' the almighty peace
Judge said "What you got in your defense son?"
"Fifty-seven channels and nothin' on"
I can see by your eyes friend you're just about gone
Fifty-seven channels and nothin' on...
Fifty-seven channels and nothin'

Dear Reader Jane done said a cotton-pickin' mouthful of truth!

Not that it matters, but, if I am not out of bed by 8:15 (her morning walk time) Minx will run into the bedroom and sorta sing me awake - - any one who has had a Husky will know the sound I'm referring to.
Minx lets you know that this is HER house, but, you're welcome to drop in.
The other thing about Huskies that I have learned is that they will always be roamers - even with proper leash training, and daily routined walks; IF they are not leashed, they will travel.

DR Charles, I could not disagree with you more strongly about the moist quotient in THE RETURN OF THE KING. Any tears and sentimentality shown in the film has been EARNED by those characters. I wouldn't deny them their emotions, and I'm grateful I could join in (and then some).

I, too, look forward to the extended edition (tentatively slated for release in August with the theatrical edition coming in May), and between now and then plan on borrowing from a friend the extended editions of the other films to see them. (I have only the theatrical versions).

Did the DVD thing tonight myself. Finished AI, and I have to say I still stand by my gut feeling that the movie should have ended with the discovery of the blue fairy and David's waiting for her to grant his wish. The feel-good/give David closure/ET ending with the clone mother for me destroyed the very cynical tone of the piece. I wanted that melancholy.

After I finished AI, I put in LILO & STITCH, beautfully animated and fun. Then, PLANET OF THE APES which I stopped after about 20 minutes. I know a new anamorphic transfer is upcoming for it, but I doubt I'll sink money into upgrading.

[sigh] I once had the Encore channels on my digital cable service, but when I upgraded to a high definition cable box, the technicians discovered they had let me go well past the introductory offer of those movie channels and took them away. I also lost in the process the Fox Movie Channel and 5 STARZ channels when they made that discovery. Damn! I could add them back (for a fee naturally), but for now I'll stay with the hundreds I presently have.

DR Matt - you know, don't you, that I reviewed that lovely dvd of LILO & STITCH for Scarlet Street Magazine? ? ? ?  ;)

I just got back from the dvd trading place I frequent, and PLANET OF THE APES was NOT one of the titles I traded in, but, the other films in the series are now on somebody's else's shelves.  I'll take the anamorphic when it comes out, a rare case of double-dipping for me.

Trade-wise, I did well, if I do say so myself:
took a few dvds in and got SEASON 8 X FILES (there's no way in hell that I would ever pay what Fox's list price is on this!), THE GREAT GATSBY, IT'S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD (the now out-of-print version with the documentary) and DOWN WITH LOVE - only the final choice being a *used* dvd.

DR Emily, of course I hit you with my Karmaliscious Wand for quoting The Boss!

DR TD,

I had a friend with a Husky. The dog was a roamer, but so was the husband - a dangerous combination. He took the dog out one evening and returned home alone, plastered, the next morning. (He remembered leaving the dog at a bar, but couldn't remember which one.) Fortunately, my friend was familiar with her husband's haunts. She went from bar to bar, and eventually found Seiku tied up and patiently waiting outside the WheatSheaf Tavern. Seiku, happily, lived a long and happy life. But the marriage ended soon after the WheatSheaf incident.

Ann, do post a pic of little Shy...I have no aversion to rats or mice!

I do! I have a HUGE aversion to mice! ;)

Back from an unexpectedly long day at the Met. I ended up picking up the evening show, so more moolah for me!

DVD: Princess Bride
CD: Mrs. Miller/WICKED
VHS: Nothing

Compare this pic of Times Square to Jrand's from 10 years ago...

I'm up for an omelette.

With sausage and mushrooms, please.

And strong, hot coffee, too.

Of course, if you must have pancakes, I'll go along as long as the restaurant does waffles.

I could waffle over a waffle!

Good evening!

-Just two more Camelots to go... :-(

Today's performances were the last shows for one of our Young Tom's.  He was already getting emotional right before the show, but it was nice to see him all happy and smiling during the curtain call.  *I "worry" about that final scene tomorrow night.  Get the boxes of Kleenex ready!

-Funny thing, a bunch of us have the same feeling about the closing of the show.  We'd all love for the show to run longer - if it could, being part of a season, it can't - BUT all of us also want to be back home real soon.  I guess having the show happen over the holidays kind of got everyone kind of homesick - ???   In any case, it's been a great run.

*The crew did their crew photo tonight.  Lots of fun.  They all picked parts of their favorites costumes!  And one light op, in particular, chose to wear one of the horse harnesses... Very nice looking man, and it was nice to see him in the harness too... And you tell it was a little cold tonight in the theatre too.  ;)  I'll do my best to post some pics once I get them copied over from my camera.

DR Jennifer - RE: Y&R - Sharon accidentally killed somebody!?!?!??  And she dragged his body across town?!?!?!?!?  HA!!  Doesn't the Newman clan have enough to deal with right now with Nicholas' "betrayal"?  *I haven't seen the show since before Christmas - they were arresting "the moustache".  I guess I have a bit of catching up to do.  And starting next week I can do just that!  A truly guilty pleasure!

OH, and which character do you think will be the next one to reveal that they can sing?  ;) -I was actually surprised that they did not do some sort of crossover promotion when Nick Newman - can't recall the actor's name right now - had that (horrible) band with some other soap hunks.  And does Nikki ever play piano anymore?

-And such nice pics of babies and pets...

I wish I was home enough to be able to have a pet - I would love a nice medium-sized dog.  As for a baby, my nieces and nephew will suffice for now.

I'd have been up for pancakes, but I just got back from the flicks and have gorged on popcorn.  Saw LOST IN TRANSLATION.  Very nice.  Bill Murray has evolved from comedian to a lovely actor in his last few films.

No, was never a huge fan of Doug McClure's limited acting range...but I did work twice with James Drury in dinner theatre...THE RAINMAKER & ONCE MORE WITH FEELING, have seen him a few times since and there is a warm feeling for Jimbo.

Sorry, Matt H., but in practically every scene with Frodo either he or Sam weep...While given the task and the circumstance, I can understand some blubbering up to a point, I still think they could have found a few different notes every once in a while.  It's not a big complaint, mind you, but I noticed it enough for it to take me out of the story upon occasion.  When you're noticing the acting (or perhaps, directorial) choices, you're no longer enmeshed in the story.

Well, I'm gonna head to bed... at least it's a little earlier than last night... Tomorrow will be a long day - two shows and then the closing night pizza party!  *I need to make sure I bring some "safe food" for myself to enjoy afterwards - well, I could always do the "scrape the cheese of the slice" thing, but... no.

See you in the morning.

Sleep well, all.

Since, at the moment, I am the only one here it seems silly to post, but I didn't want BK to post tomorrow's notes before I had a chance to say "Hello."

Between snow storms today, I managed to squeeze in a long rehearsal for the murder mystery, and yes, yet another performance of Oliver.  Traffic was a ngihtmare, but I managed to get everywhere I had to be in a timely manner, and now I am ready to crash.

Great photos (and posts) from one and all.  I will try and post photos of my kitties tomorrow between the Sehawks playoff game, the final performance of O, and another rehearsal.

Good night all!

Given the nature of Hobbits, the burden of the Ring of Power, the horrendous conditions of the journey to Mordor and the necessity of putting up with the loathsome Gollum, tears are most definitely in order for both Frodo and Sam, neither of whom, to my mind, overdid it one bit.  In fact, they could have whined and complained much much more so horrific was their chore -- plus the belief expressed by Sam that theirs was a one-way trip.

There is a degree of cynicism I am most grateful I have not attained.  Perhaps if I were in that most dehumanizing of situations -- working in Hollywood for people who are, for the most part, interested only in money rather than art -- I might find real emotions more maudlin.  I'm sure such situations -- plus seeing one's work handled cavalierly or clumsily -- must enure most folks to heart-on-the-sleeve reactions.

But I'm not in that situation, thank goodness. I do appreciate seeing this great fantasy produced so meticulously, magically and mesmerizingly for the cinema.

Looking forward to seeing Angel and Nicholas TCB. Not sure about the Seahawks. (are they a Theatre sports team?) I trust the pockets are not too worn out to be picked in the final O performance. Next time the role comes up will you "think it out again"?
