Well, you've skipped the notes (April Fools!), the notes were filled with bile and vitriol (April Fools!), and now it is time for you to post until the cows leave home (April Fools!)

I also liked the Mel Gibson version of Hamlet...not so much for Gibson as for  the actress who played Gertrude...oh lordy I cn see her face and cannot remember her name,...she layed Robin Williams mother in Garp...

Try as I can, I find no reference to Glenn Close getting layed by another women in Garp.

George:

We took the youngest Grandlad to see Meet The Robinson's today - he was totally entertained!

Woody went right out and bought the CD of the score (mainly Danny Elfman with some Rufus Wainwright songs).

Last night Jose posted (on enjoying Happy Feet):

Quote
Umm... No.  Surprisingly dark.  A bit too long.  And kind of confusing - was this really marketed to kids?  Lots of mixed messages.

Again, we took both the Grandlads to see this one - they enjoyed it more than I did! We bought the DVD, and both kids put it on after we got them home late last evening and stayed glued to the tube. I think they are kept "tuned in" by the music and enjoyed many of the spectacular CGI action sequences. They did not, however, seem to get that emnotionally engaged by the film - unlike Bridge to Terabithia which had them both totally engaged (and the eldest Lad in tears at the end). He didn't want to leave his seat when the movie was over because he didn't want anyone to see that he had been crying.

For kids that are going to see SpiderMan, X-Men, and Harry Potter - Happy Feet doesn't seem so very dark.

Long day today.

Two church services and two rehearsals [and, since I am up on only about 4 hours sleep, I fear I won't make it through the same sermon - twice].

Followed by an afternoon concert  [SwishySarah, it's a program of all Herbert Howells choral and organ music].

Followed by an evening rehearsal for next week [requiems of Fauré and Rutter].

So I will not have a chance to revisit here until late tonight.  At which point I will be pooped.  But solvent.

Happy posting, all you wonderful April Fools!

Damn!  Southwestern Ohio Biblebelt mentality drives me insane!

I just tried to check the estate account online, and I cannot login; the password's no longer working.  This could be one of four possible things:
  1.  The bank's doing cleanup today so it's down
  2.  I accidentally did something the last time I was online
  3.  One of my siblings screwed it up trying to check on me
  4.  We've been done in by a hacker

So, I called the bank and there's no one workng today.  I cannot do a thing but fret until tomorrow.  The hell good is 24/7 online banking without some semblance of a 7-day support group?  Citibank certainly has it.

In an April dream
Once you came to me
When you smiled I looked into your eyes
And I knew I'd be loving you
and then you touched my hand
And I learned April dreams can come true

Oh are we just April fools
Who can't see all the danger around us
If we're just April fools
I don't care, true love has found us now

Little did we know
Where the road would lead
Here we are a million miles away from the past
Travelin' so fast now
There's no turning back
If our sweet April dream doesn't last

Are we just April fools
Who can't see all the danger around us
If we're just April fools
I don't care, we'll find our way somehow
No need to be afraid
True love has found us now

So, how have the screenings gone?  Haven't you and Peter also been doing Q&A sessions?

They've been great! Friday early show was sold out and about 2 dozen people turned away. (But it's a small theatre...). The late show as about 5/6 full.

Peter answers questions and I am there to occasionally refresh his memory or answer technical question or about the editing process (we had several last night.)

Last night, we got blasted by some old Commies for not expounding on a statement by an interviewee in the film, because it makde their movement look callous and opportunistic. aSome old Anarchists jumped into the fray and for a minute I thought a hockey game was going to break out!

Fortunately, one of our scholars was there to clarify and back us up!

DR singdaw - I remember attempting to play a rehearsal of the Howell's "Hymnus Paradisi".  I was a last minute emergency sub for the National Cathedral Choral Society.  That's definitely not a piece that's sight-readable - especially when you're rehearsing in the National Cathedral: I would hit a key on the piano, and then hear the sound about two seconds later.  -The Dvorak "Te Deum" was a bit easier to deal with during that rehearsal.

I think the posting problem is related to the dreaded Daylight Savings Time. The server on which this site is hosted perhaps did not have a patch to ensure proper realization of DST. It, therefore, changed over today, as did my computer at home. I have Windows XP but I never installed Service Pack 2 so I couldn't download and install the DST patch. I woke up this morning to find the computer had changed the internal clock, setting it ahead an hour.

So... After I had just snatched one of the brownies that the stage manager brought in this morning, Eartha Kitt gave me a "look" and a little "cough".  "I know it's none of my business, but you kids eat entirely too much sugar." -There were other cast and crew enjoying the freshly baked brownies too.  In any case...

I've been noticing that it's time for me to "get healthy" (again), and Ms. Kitt's "gentle reminder" was just what I needed.  So...

DR FJL - If I can't make it to brunch, could you save me a slice of Red Velvet Cake? ;)

Sounds like Ms. Kitt has the same aversion to sugar that the late Gloria Swanson had. Used to parade around the country extolling the evils of sugar.

I'm not sure she has an aversion, but I do know that she eats very healthily.  I think she was just stating the obvious - there are a lot of sugar and carb lovers in this company.

I woke up about 20 minutes ago...dry mouth, dry throat, dry sinuses.

Sigh.

So, I've been hydrating...slowly...in hopes of getting some more sleep.  But my throat remains dry despite my efforts.

DR Ron Pulliam - Have you ever considered a complete sinus and nasal passage transplant?  ;)

Seriously... Have you recently been tested for a wheat, gluten and/or lactose intolerance?  A colleague of mine was constantly dealing with allergy symptoms year-round until a few months ago.  His doctor finally suggested that he get checked for food intolerances, and, lo and behold, it turned out he had developed a wheat and gluten allergy.  After just a few days of cutting out flour, he noticed that he was generally feeling much, much better.  *And, thankfully, after some "experimentation", he found that he did not have to cut out bread, cookies, etc. completely from his diet.  All a question of moderation.

I also viewed the animation film HAPPY FEET last night, and I also did not care for it.  It was initially promising--I loved the first five minutes--but I found the rest of the movie derivative of RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSE REINDEER, not to mention thematically confusing and emotionally uninvolving.

And after watching the early Warner Brothers cartoon included in the extras, I can't get "I Love to Singa" out of my head!

L They did not, however, seem to get that emnotionally engaged by the film - unlike Bridge to Terabithia which had them both totally engaged (and the eldest Lad in tears at the end). He didn't want to leave his seat when the movie was over because he didn't want anyone to see that he had been crying.

Just when I was getting used to the clock in my car reading an hour early I will have to remember it is finally showing the correct time.

In an April dream
Once you came to me
When you smiled I looked into your eyes
And I knew I'd be loving you
and then you touched my hand
And I learned April dreams can come true

Oh are we just April fools
Who can't see all the danger around us
If we're just April fools
I don't care, true love has found us now

Little did we know
Where the road would lead
Here we are a million miles away from the past
Travelin' so fast now
There's no turning back
If our sweet April dream doesn't last

Are we just April fools
Who can't see all the danger around us
If we're just April fools
I don't care, we'll find our way somehow
No need to be afraid
True love has found us now

Thanks ,Ron, one of my favorite songs.

I'm back from a delightful HHW gathering at the home of DR FJL, his partner the mighty talented Skip, and their delightful children Toby and Dylan, starring the fantastic cuisine of Mr Skip Kennon.  Today's specialty was the best fried chicken - and I'm from a long line of experts in great white trash fried foods - I have ever tasted.  The food was plenty and tasty, the company sparkled, the vixter was raising hell somewhere, and the conversation was witty.  All you DRs should be suffering earburn for the next day.

The guests were the usual suspects - Skip, FJL, Anthony, Ben, vixmom, the vixter, moi, Rodzinski, and TPunk - and our Georgia guests DR edisaurus and her DH Greg.  As for DR Jose, who seems to feel that work comes before good times, he was missed.

And now I'm tired.

Oh, the good news is the bank account is now running, so I guess my fear of hackers is over.  For now.  I'm still afraid of Lady Macbeth.

While you NY and Georgia HHWers were having, and possibly are still having, a grand 'ole time at FJL, Skip, Dylan, and Toby's apartment, I was interviewing the delightful 1950s/60s actor Ron Hagerthy...if you have ever tuned in to a TV show from those two decades then you have seen his handsome face...he was in just about every show ever made! He really did work a lot...and in films as well...like TITANIC, I WAS A COMMUNIST FOR THE FBI, CITY THAT NEVER SLEEPS, and the classic 18 AND ANXIOUS.

He also spent two seasons as Clipper on SKY KING.

Hmm... Although I guess I could also stop by "Piece of Chicken" on the way back uptown.  It's operated out of the kitchen entrance of Jezebel.  You can order a piece of chicken (fried), a piece of fish (fried), and some sides (mac'n'cheese, collard greens, etc.), and they even have cups of soup too.  And it's all pretty tasty.  Best off all, a piece of chicken (or a piece of fish, or a cup of soup) costs just a dollar!

Well, tomorrow night is the first night of Passover, so... Gefilte fish is more appropriate for a Seder than frahd chicken.

In a continuation of his Eat Healthy New York program (recently kicked off by the banning of Trans-fats), Mayor Bloomberg announced a new initiative to ban the selling of all cookies, brownies and other "take-along" sweets. No longer will we have to witness chunky New Yorkers trailing Levain cookie crumbs as they saunter our fair avenues.

(The Italian-American Association successful lobbied for the exclusion of cannolis from the proposed ban.)

Next, I watched THE CRIME DOCTOR'S COURAGE, a okay 1945 Columbia programmer in the CRIME DOCTOR series. This is the first one I've ever seen. Reliable actors from the contract player list: Warner Baxter, Hillary Brooke, Jerome Cowan. Once you debunked the entire vampire scam, the murderer was easy to spot. I wouldn't mind seeing the other films in this series. I'll have to keep my eyes open for them to p[op up on the cable guide for TCM.

Awhile back I copied a recipe for Black Bottom Cupcakes.
I can’t remember who I got them from & I didn’t include the baking directions or how, or when, to add the filling.

For a tiny treat, I make about 48 of these in gem-size muffin tins; the same
batter produces 24 regular cupcakes.

FILLING
8 oz. cream cheese, softened
1 egg
1/3 cup sugar
1/8 tsp. salt
6 oz. chocolate chips

Beat everything together until smooth, then add in the chips. Set aside.

BATTER
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup sugar
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. cocoa
1 cup water
1 tbsp. vinegar
1 tsp. vanilla
1/3 cup vegetable oil

DR singdaw - Maurice Salad (http://www.askyourneighbor.com/recipes/054.htm) is a fond memory from J. L. Hudson's, the department store in Detroit (where I grew up).  While the salad I had for lunch today was good, it wasn't authentic.

DR JoseSPiano...

Howell's Hymnus is wonderful and gorgeous, but definitely not for sight-reading...even for someone of your superior skills!  And you're right; the reverb doesn't help.  I assume that the National Cathedral has some sort of closed-circuit monitor for these kinds of situations?

I remember a friend of mine playing for a situation like that.  He wasn't with the conductor during a rehearsal.  She cut the choir off and yelled out, "What are you DOING back there with that monitor...watching DALLAS???!!!"

I remember a friend of mine playing for a situation like that.  He wasn't with the conductor during a rehearsal.  She cut the choir off and yelled out, "What are you DOING back there with that monitor...watching DALLAS???!!!"

Aw, thanks.  Well, I sure did not feel "superior" during that rehearsal.  The conductor had warned me in advance about the acoustic, and the delay.  He told me just to follow his baton and try not to listen to the sound. You want me to do what?!??!  Like I said, I managed to make it through the Dvorak "Te Deum" that started off that rehearsal, but after a page or two of the Howells, the conductor made his way off his podium and gently nudged me off the piano bench.  "It's OK.  You'll still get paid."  :-\

After the rehearsal was done, the conductor and the section leader who called me both thanked for me coming in, and for dealing with such a challenging score and situation.  That sort of made me feel better.  But, frankly, I have to say I was sort of relieved that I was nudged off the piano bench.  If I had known that the sound delay was going to be that bad, I would have played with earplugs in my ears.

I'll be heading back Sunday night on the vans with the cast.  However, most of my Easter Sunday will be free. *And if you would like to come to the final dress Sunday night...

*I just have a question about the rules:  So, does only one team get to take advantage of a Fast Forward?

Normally only one team can win a fast forward. Any number of teams can try to get it, but only the first team to finish it gets it.

However tonight there was an intersection (which rarely happens). It meant that 2 teams had to work together. So they let both those teams go for the ff and get it.  But the 3rd and 4th place teams could not have gone for the ff cause it was already taken (i mean they could have gone for it but it would have said "taken").

They're just spending the night.  They are only 2 hours from home, but had such a long drive today that they didn't want to go any farther and I'm very glad to have them stay. That's why I only had a couple hours notice that they would be staying here.  They both told me mom has never been sicker in her life than she was the night they were in New Mexico and she had to go to the hospital.  I think she just wants to get home.

Mom now wants one of us to drive them out there next year. I think dad is coming around to that idea too.

Next, I watched a new Criterion DVD I received yesterday, a film I had never seen before called OVERLORD. Very unusual kind of World War II film that mixes live action actors juxtiposed with actual archieval footage from various war sources. There are lots of really haunting images, and there's a gorgeous theme for the picture by Paul Glass, but I don't think the film fully achieves its aims due to a too simple basic story and the uneasy mix of some gorgeous "new" photography mixed with the rougher, somewhat damaged war footage used in counterpoint.

Actually, I had two delightful phone calls from DR MBarnum this evening.  Of course, I had to make four phone calls to get the two respnses since he was neither home nor glued to his cell phone.  He claims he was out doing "manly" work.  I think it's a euphemism.  Maybe he couldn't find a phone at the old folks home?

DR Cillaliz, the weathergirl!  We want live footage, lady.  I wanna see this one.

DR MattH, you've got to drop those folk who tie you down when y'all come to New York and be where the real partay is!  I wish Dan(theMan), Singdaw, and others would hightail it in as well.  Ah haz spoke!

There are also rumors that DR Cason may be heading east to take up a space on my floor, since acting is appreciated much more in Manhattan than in Hollywood.  No dates have been set yet.

I sound like Mary (ugh) Hart!

DR MattH, you've got to drop those folk who tie you down when y'all come to New York and be where the real partay is!  I wish Dan(theMan), Singdaw, and others would hightail it in as well.  Ah haz spoke!

Plans are still tentative for a trip this summer, but if we do come, I'll certainly make it known. Would love to meet the HHW/NYC chapter.

Just wrote two solid pages of details from the research, and it's really fun and interesting.  So, that's seven pages today - haven't read what I wrote earlier, and won't go back to it until I finish the one or two more detail pages.  Once those are done, then I'll polish or fix what I wrote earlier.

I don't recall burning ears, just a buzzing pain; I thought it was from talking to DR MBarnum on the telephone.  It has been scientifically proven that talking to him for five minutes lowers your IQ and sets your heart afire for a physique magazine AND a velvet painting.

That is so not true DR Elmore...framed paint-by-numbers of horses, barns, and kittens perhaps, but not velvet paintings.

Hello, fellow Dear Readers.

It has been a terrible weekend. We (the DKids and I) drove up to Las Vegas for the weekend. The trip was pretty uneventful, until a security guard approached me about taking photos of the ceiling. I tried to explain about the casino carpet and casino ceiling photos, but he thought I was crazy. So, long story short, police were called, I was put in handcuffs, and taken to the psych ward for evaluation.

I have big news!  I got a call tonight telling me that the person who won the bid for weatherperson for a day in an auction a couple weeks ago never got back to the people at the auction, so they decided to give it to the person with the second high bid....ME!   So at some time in the not to distant future, I will be going to KTIV TV and training with the weather people and then doing the weather at noon on that day. What a kick!   I'm really looking forward to this.  Being a weather person is one of my nerdy fantasies.

Congratulations!  You will send copies of the tape to those of us who would like to see it, won't you?? :)
