Well, you've read the notes, the notes were wry and on rye, and now it is time for you to post until the wry and rye cows come home.

It's a pretty safe bet that it'll eventually happen...just not at this exact moment. ;)

BK, the times have been announced and Friday's shows, when Peter the director will attend, are 7:20 and 9:40. We should have a pretty good gang at the early show.

I'm not sure if we would have time to go out afterwards that night because we would have to be back for the end of the next screening and I don't know if there's anything quick around there. Plus---Friday night----would it be crazy?

But we would love to get together with you and Adrianna and any other HHW foks while we're there. We'll be staying at the Wilshire Dunes.

Fred raved last night and now it's my turn.

Frost/Nixon is one of the finest things I have seen in many a year. If Michael Sheen and Frank Langella don't win a co-Tony for Best Actor in a Play there is no justice.

I know the Watergate events inside out. I was 21, out of high school for three years and a month away from beginning adventures at University. I was riveted by the whole experience (Watergate). I was also riveted by Frost/Nixon. Even though I knew how it ended I was breathless by the end. What a great, great night in the theatre!!!

Now I have to get a ticket to Legally Blonde. I wish they had the really cheap tickets in the balcony as they did for All Shook Up (it took place in 1950 so the balcony tix were $19.50). The cheapest tickets are $46.50. I will look into the Playbill discount.

In other theatre news we are seeing Angela Lansbury and Marian Seldes in Deuce. Tickets were purchased yesterday for April 18, a week after it begins previews.

We went to Junior's for dinner yesterday, before Frost/Nixon. It's nice. It's crowded but the food is decent, the service is good and the prices are moderate. They also have a counter so if you're a single you can sit and eat uninterrupted. I don't know if they take reservations (I doubt it) but I recommend it as an alternative to other high priced places in the theatre district.

Gotta go do the obvious.

Later, gaters.

My question for ASK BK day - in the scene in THE CREATURE WASN'T NICE, what are those two machines that Cindy is standing beside when she is screaming at your entrance (a nice Allison Hayes scream BTW)....are those actual computers?  The are very tall and have some nice lights, but they don't have the tape reels that I see on a lot of those machines when they are used in movies.

The moment that always makes me laugh out loud is Cooking With John when he starts up the blender!

All the clocks on the second floor are still an hour behind so I slept late. Good morning, all!

Today, JoAnn and I have estate calls to make, perhaps even a stop out to dad's house and check out the scene.  My full day in Oxford, Ohio, tomorrow has been confirmed, and I am looking forward to it.

DR JRand56, re Sanjaya and my comments: Paula(?) kept screaming at him "you are an entertainer" and she could have equally called him a brain surgeon, an accountant, since he is none of them.  Liberace was, to my ears, a facile pianist, but not a great musician, covering the fact with extra glitz and boas; I can see Sanjaya's secondrate performances going the same Vegas route for a lot of bluehaired ladies who mother sexually ambiguous men.

What I found interesting last night were that the singer of "Mack the Knife" may know Bobby Darin's version but I doubt he knows the original melody Darin was riffing on, not a single chord in Lakisha's "Blues In the Night" sounded to me like any of the ones Arlen actually wrote, and I hate the way the songs get truncated to fit their time spots: Melinda's verse was missing bars but I thought she was the best thing all evening with Jordin coming in second.  I found it interesting that Simon thought she was "cabaret-y" and I thought the singer of "Smile" was more so.  I'd like/forgive Chris more for his transgressions against the Great American Songbook if his performance didn't smack to me of "Aren't I just too cute for words?"

LaKisha sang "Stormy Weather" rather than "Blues in the Night," but I agree completely, DR Elmore.

Not one word from any of the judges about that huge sustained last note from Jordin with "On a Clear Day." I thought some of her breathing was problemmatic throughout the song, but that last note was something.

I agree with virtually all you say here.  I voted for Melinda about 50 times, and threw a few votes at Chris (my second favorite of the night), Jordin and Gina.

What you say about Chris...I can see what you're referring to.  The only thing you don't take into account is that he -- like YOU -- simply cannot help himself:  He IS too cute for words...and he's just being himself!

I expected one of the "judges" -- at least Simon, fergoshsakes -- to tell Lakisha she should have taken Bennett's advice about ending the song on that last note.

Her song ended badly, IMO.  I was totally unimpressed.

And Paula telling her she has never looked more beautiful....well, it put me in mind of someone staring at an overstuffed sausage and saying the same thing.

There are internet downloads that allow you to set up continual voting for the entire two-hour voting blocks.

That's what I think many of Sanjaya's fans do....they post thousands of votes APIECE using such software.

I text-message my votes while I'm watching "House".

I couldn't find a definition for "Moley" But I did find this definition for "Moly"

mo·ly1 Pronunciation[moh-lee]
–noun, plural -lies. Classical Mythology. an herb given to Odysseus by Hermes to counteract the spells of Circe.

And if you aren't up on your Greek Mythology...

Cir·ce       (sūr'sē)  n.   Greek Mythology
A goddess who turned Odysseus's men temporarily into swine but later gave him directions for their journey home.

Great article, DR CILLA LIZ.

I love Lexis-Nexus.  That is the website that finally put a finishing piece in the Allison Hayes mystery for me in 1992!  An article in the Wall Street Journal (!) talking about Calcium Poisoning referenced a JAMA article written by her doctor!  Without it, I would have never known.

My only problem with a show like Frost/Nixon is that the REAL people are so ingrained in my brain, that any "acting" of the events seems like a parody or a conceit.

I often feel the same way; the actors can be a distraction.

I also have trouble with certain actors whose faces we all know so well. For instance, it's difficult for me to believe that Barbra Streisand is anyone other than Barbra Streisand. In many cases, I prefer to see actors who are NOT well-known for just this reason. But the actors I love I'll see in anything and enjoy their performance just because they're such fine actors.

Moly (Greek: ) is a magic herb with a black root and white blossoms in Greek mythology. In Homer's Odyssey, Hermes gave this herb to Odysseus to protect him from Circe's incantation. It can be plucked only by celestial hands.

Well we have many Gods and Goddesses here, we should be able to pluck some Moly

Thanks JRand.  I really like Lexis-Nexis too. Their search engine is logical to me so I can find things much faster than on Westlaw.  Not sure which would really be cheaper, but now I have free access to both and the only one I use is Lexis-Nexis

And the word of the day is: SAPONACEOUS!
While the story of Sacagawea, who travelled across the North American continent with Lewis and Clark, has been told many times, few know the story of her little sister, SAPONACEOUS, who followed the main group, picking up their trash and generally cleaning up after them.

According to DialIdol, it's almost too close to call tonight with all of the contestants, apart from Melinda, in potential jeopardy. Should make for an interesting bottom two.

I still think it's Gina's night to go home, though, of course, Sanjaya DESRVES to be be gone, but I think he'll be there a few more weeks.

One of the vote sites --  vote4idol  (http://www.vote4idol.com/overall-6.html)-- shows Haley trailing the pack.  It may be her night.

I thought Gina was terrific last night.

I'll have to wake der Brucer, because I'll want him to give me a ride to work.

I just hope Andre, our weekday cart wrangler, is back on the job today.  He called out yesterday, so two other fellows and I took turns on the wrangling.

It's very cold here. In the teens last night. I tried to cut a couple of my daffodils that were just starting to bloom, but I went out too late and they were frozen solid.   I still put them in a glass of water and this morning they are just floating blooms, but that's better than having them frozen in the yard

I think they were props.  I guess they were supposed to be computers or something - who knew?  All the machinery in Creature came from the Star Trek set (our set designer worked on Star Trek).

Today I'll get to last night's BOSTON LEGAL....

I loved this episode!  Here's the synopsis from ABC's website:

A man with a decades-long grudge against Denny Crane and his late attorney father takes the firm hostage, forcing staff at Crane, Poole & Schmidt to "re-try" a murder case in which a young Denny ensured the defendant's acquittal. Scenes from a 50-year-old television pilot, "The Defender" - featuring a young William Shatner [and Ralph Bellamy as his father] - are incorporated into the episode to show what transpired during the original case that led to the modern day hostage taking. Meanwhile, Alan Shore's attempt to defend an accused prostitute lands him in jail for contempt of court.

I loved this episode.  In the "flashbacks," Denny wants to use a trick in the courtroom to help get an acquittal for their client.  His father is upset that he (Denny) would resort to such tactics, but it works...and so does the episode.  It really shows another side of Denny Crane (and William Shatner's acting) that we rarely ever get to see.

The great thing about last night's show was that the flashbacks were real.  The whole time they were doing it (showing young denny) i just knew that had to be william shatner and i was wondering what it was from.

And what does "cabaret-y" mean exactly?  Same with "taking a standard and making it your own"?

It's what Simon usually says to a singer who did a good job on a standard, but the singer isn't Simon's favorite.

Melinda has performed beautifully every week....but if any other singer had done a good job singing such songs as "As Long As He Needs Me" or "Home", he'd have crucified them for being too "Broadway" or "Cabaret".

Of course, they would NOT have done the songs half as well as Melinda did them...but the songs are usually what Simon criticizes more than the performance of same.

Re: dancing with the stars.

SPOILERS

I watched. Well i watched the last 25 minutes and then fast forwarded through the rest.  I was not surprised that shandi was in the bottom 2 and left. But i don't think she was the worst.

The reason i hate the new voting system (and why i pointed it out yesterday, other than the fact that they have been misleading the audience) is because it should not happen that the leading vote getter (from the judges) should be in the b2.

Whether leeza deserved to have the highest marks (no IMO), in the old voting system it would be almost impossible for the hightest vote-getter to be B2 (unless the lowest judges votee was the most popular, second lowest 2nd most popular ...).

There are a lot of good dancers this year though. I think joey, ian, apolo, and laila all have legitimate shots at winning.

I read DR George's post. But must have skipped that line.

I wonder how many viewers knew it was william shatner. They tried to "help" us along by showing us the faces morph into one another.  Plus the footage was obviously very old.

It was a great idea though. And the way it fit into the story as if the dialogue had been written now was fantastic.

I agree with virtually all you say here.  I voted for Melinda about 50 times, and threw a few votes at Chris (my second favorite of the night), Jordin and Gina.

What you say about Chris...I can see what you're referring to.  The only thing you don't take into account is that he -- like YOU -- simply cannot help himself:  He IS too cute for words...and he's just being himself!

;)

Well, thank you.  It's a cross and I bear it! :)

I think Chris is going to have a huge career, and I don't wish him ill.  I think the contracts and offers are already in motion with "his people."  I'd like to see him move beyond the cuteness aspect, and he may yet.  Lakisha lost points last night for me but I loooooove Melinda.  I wonder if she will need an orchestrator?

I have a nip/tuck season 5 question (that is the current season, right?) and was wondering if anyone here can help me.

We are currently about 4 or 5 episodes in and i accidently erased the last 10 minutes of the show. It was the first one with rosie o'donnell.

I figured i would just go to my usual televisionwithoutpity site. But they do not seem to have nip/tuck.  I went to the f/x site but did not notice any episode summaries.

Does anyone know where i might find a detailed summary of this episode? Or does anyone remember it specifically.

SPOILERS

*
*
Basically chrisitian went to rosie's house and they saw her daugher having sex with her husband. And the guy christian and matt's father hired tried to abduct matt. And matt hit him with a garbage can lid. And that is where i end.... :(

Okay i haven't read it yet. But i think i found a summary. The part that confused me was that i was not sure if it was season 4 or 5 i was watching. And they had season 5 listed but with no summaries!

Hopefully this will fill in the blanks!

Every week I have to pick someone who I think will stay- the catch is once I've used them I can't use them again, so it should be someone who will go in the next week or 2.

I haven't picked Phil yet and I'd like to, but I'm nervous that he could go tonight. Otherwise I'm picking Chris. I've already used Gina, Haley and Sanjaya.

Donald, what a great show this week!

We're in the 60's right now. I've always loved Old Fashioned Wedding. It's one of my favorite Berlin counterpoints.

Ah, now we have the lovely Barbara Harris in Apple Tree!

Who have you chosen so far?

I'd say melinda is safe for sure. And i'd think lakisha, blake and chris will probably be safe too.

And i really believe jordin will last a while.

Like i said i have no idea how popular gina is. She could be bottom 2 and she could be safe and in the clear.

Also re: sanjaya. Some people think he will be in it till the end. But i think he will go soon.

As for haley, i think she is weak. But does she have fans?

Phil does not seem to be too popular, so he will most likely be B2. But you can never tell who will go. It's usually unpredictable.

If you haven't chosen him i would choose chris. Because to me it's unclear how long he will last (i don't see him as top 4). But he should be safe this week.

That is so funny that you wrote this while i was typing. :)

I would not pick phil since i think there is a chance he could go (and he'll most likely be b2). I would choose chris. I think that is a relatively safe and good choice.

I would also think about choosing lakisha in a week or so. I thought she was going to last till the end. But now i'm not so sure.  She's not really that interesting to watch for long periods of time. And i think she may not last till the end.

I'm certain she could use you.

I don't know if it's just me, but only a few singers come along in a generation who I think are extraordinary.

Melinda is one of them.  Simon said she was like a young Gladys Knight.  Agreed.  I think of her with same awe...her performances generally move me to being misty-eyed.  Only Elliott Yamin ever did that -- just once -- among all the Idol contestants over the years.
Title: Re:HOLY MOLEY ON RYE
Post by: Ron Pulliam on April 04, 2007, 12:44:45 PM
A lot of Idol blogs take issue with Melinda's wide-eyed surprise at audience reception of her singing.

Many say it's a put-on, a sham, a fake reaction.  I think it's suprising that they feel that way.

Conversely, I'm always amazed at the amount of humility she possesses to actually be "surprised."

Obviously she's not used to it, so she'll have to grown into accepting it.

I cannot fathom the posters who think she's "okay" but think someone else in the competition is better.

This isn't apples and oranges here...it's not a "close" call when it comes to whether she's good or not.  What should be discussed is whether she's far too good for the competition and whether she ought to be doing a solo tour before "Idol" is even over.

If Melinda wins "Idol"...it will not have been a major coup for her because she's decimated the competition week after week.

If she receives the fewest votes one week, it will be a major setback for any integrity the show ever hoped to have.

I went to the scratch and dent office furniture place today and bought a wonderful traditional Hon Executive Desk and a close to matching (you'd have to look close to see it doesn't come from the same set) credenza/lateral file cabinet for around 70% off!  It's a beautiful desk with a little missing filigre (same maghogany color underneath so you can't tell) and a missing drawer pull.

The credenza has a shinier finish and slightly different drawer pulls, otherwise it's identical. It had a little scratch on the top, but nothing very noticeable and it will probably be covered with something any way.  I couldn't believe the deal I got on them and they are perfect for the lawyer image I want to give people

The great thing about last night's show was that the flashbacks were real.  The whole time they were doing it (showing young denny) i just knew that had to be william shatner and i was wondering what it was from.

Apparently it's from a show he did many years ago.

I just loved how they worked it in to the story. Totally brilliant!

Those excerpts were from an old STUDIO ONE live broadcast he did in 1957, and the footage was taken from a kinescope made from the live broadcast. Wasn't that Ralph Bellamy as his father in the clips?

I've had a busy afternoon of viewing.

I began by finishing THUNDERBALL which I had begun last night. The transfer continued to be exceptionally clean and the new DTS soundtrack a real blast. I really loved that about this new edition. I would have liked stronger color throughout but to have such a clear, clean image, it's a tradeoff I'm okay with.

I still think it's the weakest Connery Bond even if it did make the most money. (And I'm not counting NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN which was really terrible the last time I watched it.)

Next I watched LAW & ORDER: CI, a volatile episode concerning the death of a doctor who was performing operations for the hearing impaired. The episode began with some very atmospheric silent scenes as we watched the action through the person of a deaf woman. Unfortunately, this was dropped after the opening few moments, but it might have been more effective if the writers could have figured some way to do the entire episode through the eyes of a deaf person.

A detective in the major case squad who served as the deaf translator seemed to have eyes for Detective Eames. This may be the beginning of a personal life for her.

Next came that BOSTON LEGAL episode which was being written about earlier. It was an effective episode and much more dramatic than usual (only Mark Valley getting stuck in a vent for the entire show was really played for laughs.) LAW & ORDER: SVU had a disturbing episode concerning an epidemic of drunk teenagers. Peter Hermann, Mariska Hargitay's real-life husband, guest starred as an attorney representing the teens. I concluded my afternoon viewing watching more of THE YEARLING which I had just begun yesterday before THUNDERBALL arrived. I will watch this now to its conclusion before putting any other DVDs in the player.

Of course, since the movie is over two hours long, I probably won't finish it today. We'll see how much I get watched after I go back down later.

Some TV news tidbits I just read on the VARIETY website:

30 ROCK has been renewed for a second season.

Among this year's winners of the George Foster Peabody Award, the most honored prize in TV, are UGLY BETTY, SCRUBS, THE OFFICE, and FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS.

Ginny I had to back out of hosting my book group for May.  At least it got me to read a few books.  I'm still holding The Glass Castle in reserve for when I do host the meeting.

Well, you certainly have a good excuse and have given plenty of notice.  Hope your group is as flexible as mine, pitching in when things like this come up, even at the last minute.

So, do you have any suggestions for my group to read?  We're pretty well set through August, and for September I have to come up with a book set in The Netherlands (Middfest country), but after that will need more ideas.

Ginny-I read the book my brother suggested & loved it.....KING OF LIES by John Hurt.  It will be out in paperback this month, if it hasn't happened already.  Read it and let me know what you think.  As much as I like the book I'm not sure about it making a great discussion.

Even if he did a perfect job, after 60 years galvanized plumbing really starts to deteriorate - the first symptom is usually reduced flow from hot water taps.

I say the first symptom of needing galvanized plumbing replaced is that the house is at least 30 years old!

Galvanized plumbing isn't the only reason for "decreased water flow at age 60."

I've had three strange phone calls...each from someone who could easily look up what they need on the internet.

"Someone" gave them "my" number and told them I was responsible.  Thus, the demand is that I help them get their problem solved.

None of these calls has anything to do with me, my function or the County for whom I work.

Sigh.

The damage being repaired isn't from the galvanized plumbing; it is from the home improvements we had done about ten years ago.

Did you fix their problems, DR Ron Pulliam?

I directed two of them to telephone numbers I easily obtained off Google....and the third is more complicated and has now involved three offices, including a Supervisor's office.  Am dealing with a church that wants access to a Children's Memorial Grove (established by the supervisor) that is on park land.

The park people the lady talked to distanced themselves from having anything to do with the grove...but apparently the church has been given access through a park ranger in years past.  As it turns out, access to the Grove is over an easement maintained by the park (i.e. on park land, as is the grove), so I'm totally at sea over where this will all lead.

But I'm waiting on return phone calls.  Oh, yes.  I'm waiting.

The third phone call matter has been resolved.  The lady had gotten bum info from a park district twit...the parks work with this group every year.

The supervisor of the Park (as opposed to the County supervisor) has assured me he will contact this lady and make everything "A-OK" for her and her church.

One other little bit of TV news, NBC has decided not to air two more episodes of THE BLACK DONNELLYS and has now pulled the show from its line-up. The remaining episodes can be watched at nbc.com.

Someone was looking out for me this morning...  By the time I rushed to the subway stop this morning, it was already 8:50 - and I had to be at Equity by 9:30.  Well, after waiting for just a minute, a D Train pulled in, and I boarded.  And I was at the the 47-50 Street/Rockefeller Plaza Station by 9:05!  Whew!  -I even had time to stop at the deli to get some yogurt and some Vitamin Water - I'm practically addicted to their new "XXX" variety.

In any case... I am sooooo looking forward to not having to get up early tomorrow... Oh, well.. Actually I do... Nevermind.  BUT I'll be heading up to Westport, so that'll be nice.

Hi folks!  I hope that all is going well for everyone.

I have some new news about Mom.  She had a doctor appointment today and while I was helping her back to her room to rest for a moment before we left, her right hip gave out on her.  To make along story short, the doctor wants her to have a x ray tomorrow because she may have either cracked or broken her hip.

What makes me mad is that we were kept waiting for so long that by the time she told us Mom needs the x ray, it was to late to take her to get it!  Ugh!

Poor Mom is in bed with a heating pad until tomorrow morning.

"Idol" thought #1:

Jordin - I like her, but I'm not wow'd by her.  Her pitch never seems to be right on target to my ears.  -Especially last night.  She also has that bad habit of making her breathing "heard" in order to make it sound like she's working hard.  -But, then again, that could also just be bad vocal technique.  I did like her "I Who Have Nothing" a few weeks ago, but even then, sometimes her on-purpose breathiness got in the way of the pitch for me.  And she doesn't seem to support her low notes - which is a common fault among many singers - "Hey, I'm in a comfortable part of my range, I don't have to work as hard."  WRONG!

However - and even though Paula thinks "age" is irrelevant here - I do have to say that for someone as young as she is, she does have quite the set of pipes.  It seems like she was born with a lot of natural talent.  I just hope that whoever ends up guiding her career recognizes that and doesn't try to fix what ain't broke.*  And biologically speaking, her voice won't fully mature until she's in her mid-20s - she's truly going to be Someone.

*-I mean, Barbara Cook never really studied voice formally, and now she gives masterclasses to aspiring young singers (abeit in song interpretation and not technique).  -And she still sounds wonderful!

"Idol" Thought #2:

RE: Chris and his cuteness - I do think he's cute, but I would like to see him dress better.  And I would also like to see him non-scruffy one week.  -Yes, he'd probably end up looking like he's 10, but right now there are times where he looks like he's just 14, so...

Back to his clothing:  He dresses "short", and he's not short.  I'm wondering if more formal clothes would make him look beefy/thick/etc.  I know he mentioned that he lost a bit of weight a few years back, but he's definitely not "twink thin".  He looks like he played and could still play football.  Heck, a nice button-down shirt, and some dark denim "dress jeans" would be a great improvement over what they've been putting him in.

*And it's too bad the hat last night hid his eyes at times.

"Idol" Thought #3:

RE: Melinda - As others have commented, she truly is the real deal.  And I agree.  And I'm constantly amazed that the judges haven't called her on her more "theatrical" repertoire.  However...

There are times when she strikes me as being too polished.  Too prepared.  I would love to hear a bit of rawness, spontaneity - even some sensuality in her performances.  That would make her more of a "pop star" to me.

As for today's auditions...

Another semi-slow day, but we saw some good people.  And, as always happens at these calls, I saw some people I hadn't seen in years - which is always very nice.

And we had a great monitor today.  She was lots of fun, and she kept things running smoothly throughout the day.  She even wrangled the last group of the day together a bit 'early' and we were done just a little after 5:00 - instead of finishing right at 5:30.  :)

Audition Tale Time...

A gentleman came in today to audition.  I've played for him before, and let's just say, the last time I played for him, he was not that complimentary of me.  So... I start his playing song, he starts singing after the intro is done.  Then about two lines in, he flubs a line, then asks to stop and start again.  -Which is OK - sometimes you forget a line.  No biggie.  So, I start he again, he starts again, and things go swimmingly.  Well...

After talking with the casting agent, and after recalling some of the recent auditions I've played for him, it occurs to both of us that he always messes up, and he always recovers... successfully.  Hmm...

Games people play...

The tracking info on the USPS site seems to be updated randomly.  I've received packages that are still listed as being "at destination post office".  I've found that calling the 800-number provides more current info - although you have to push a couple of buttons and sit through the automated info first to get a real person.

Have you sent your P/R to any of the casting agencies in NYC?  You're VERY cast-able right now - just lots of projects casting young, good-looking, talented men.  -In fact, I hear that a certain upcoming Broadway production that is based in a high school is still looking for a few more "students".  (But you didn't hear that from me.)

I'll be going home this weekend for Easter sorts of things and to go to work and make a little money to pay for my trip to Europe this summer.

Have I ever mentioned that I work at Borders? Well, regardless, I do, and I love it. It's a great job that lets me work whenever I want, and I get a sweeet discount on the merchandise. Anyway, I'll be working at Borders in Sterling on Friday and Saturday if any of you are around, :D

'GREASE' & DESIST -
TV WINNERS NOT BOX-OFFICE GOLD (http://www.nypost.com/seven/04042007/entertainment/theater/grease__desist_theater_michael_riedel.htm)

Here's the opening paragraphs:

Quote
April 4, 2007 -- The folks involved in "Grease" have been bragging for a week now about ticket sales - $9 million and counting for a revival that doesn't open until July.

What they haven't been talking about is a little misfire that happened last Monday, the day after the final installment of "You're the One That I Want," the NBC reality show from which the stars of the revival were cast.

The phones at Ticketmaster were, I'm told, ringing off the hook because a lot of viewers who bought tickets to "Grease" weren't happy with the actors chosen to play Danny and Sandy: Max Crumm (change the name, kid) and Laura Osnes.

"There was a bit of a frenzy because a lot of people wanted Austin and Ashley to win," says a source. "They wanted their money back."

Austin Miller and Ashley Spencer were the runners-up.

The source says extra people had to be added to the phone banks to handle the calls.

Since you grew up in the Los Angeles area, I'd recommend "Slipstream" by Leslie Larson.  It's a quick read, but a very good one filled with some amazing "ordinary" characters and characterizations.

Here's the link to the book on Amazon: Slipstream (http://www.amazon.com/Slipstream-Novel-Leslie-Larson/dp/0307338010/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/103-4997729-8163855?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1175735412&sr=8-1).

-By the time the auditions finished, the rain had dwindled to a very light drizzle, so I went ahead with my usual walk from Times Square up to 74th Street.  Alas, since the rain started to pick up again after I stopped into Levain, I headed over to 72nd Street to catch the train uptown, rather than walking up a couple more clocks.

Sorry, DR George.  I cannot say more on a public forum.  I'm sure you have some of the fat untalented conductor's recordings, several of which have won awards, making the conductor a legend in his own mind.

Very bizarre to me that they would put the contestants in groups of 3 (lowest, middle, highest).  Usually when they do that there are some surprises. But i thought it was obvious which group was which, and i was right.

Intersting to me that jordin is in the top 3. I wasn't sure about that one. At least sanjaya was in the middle and he is not that popular.

I was glad phil was safe and sorry to see the girl go (gina). She seemed so sad.  She never really grabbed me. But i still felt bad.  Next week is
J Lo.

Back from an endless day.  Had a nice work session with Alet, basically just singing through stuff and making some choices, but not doing any routining or arranging.  Then I routined a long medley for Merissa, and the one other song we hadn't done.  Then Merissa and I had our first two hour staging rehearsal.  We went number by number, figured out where the patter goes and the essence of said patter.  I also decided to cut one number, and it was the final one we'd worked on earlier - it just seemed redundant and didn't help the show, which is long enough without it.  I gave her some fun stuff to do, and the good news is that the structure is really good and very sound.  Now we just work on it and smooth it out every day.

I met vixmom and vixter after they saw Drowsy Chaperone.  We tried first to get a cab on the cab line at the Marquis, but that proved fruitless and slow, so we went to Broadway, and vixmom's keen eye spotted us a cab to the Quad, where we saw Amy's excellent film - solid and fascinating throughout, and the last 25-30 minutes are especially stunning, wrapping up the events, ideas and themes with astonishing dexterity.

We then ate at Cosi where vixter had a luscious-looking pizza and vixmom and I both had the dietetic :) Alpine chicken.  I then had to bolt since I had to be back to finish off some stuff at the office.  I see vixmom made it home safely as well.

The Vixter and I drove into the city, parked the car and wandered over the BackStage Deli for some breakfast... yummy pancakes with bananas and almonds for me and a toasted salt bagel for the Vixter.

After quick phone chats with Jose and FJL to firm up plans, the Vixter and I made quick visits  to the Nintendo store (aaugh) and the American Girl Place and then over to Equity for a quick visit with Jose and a handoff of some wonderful popsicle forms and a cake pan (from Jose to me)

and then.....

After the show Jonathan Crombie came out to announce they were collecting for Broadway Cares

We picked p a Playbill authographed by the entire original cast for our donation and then, just as were leaving (two of the last stragglers out of the theatre) we saw the Drowsy Chaperone herself, Miss Beth Level walking through the lobby with her collection bucket

The Vixter asked her if she would pose for a picture and she very gracefully consented

OMG DR Jose, can that article you wrote about GREASE be true? Wow!

I find it odd though that people would buy tix before the winners were announced and then complain. I mean they knew their favorites might not win, right?

Oh and re: Blake from AMERICAN IDOL.  Since I am in love with him i will answer your question.  Um, yah he does wear a lot of clothes. But so far it hasn't bothered me. Yah it might be nice to see something less. But i think the layered look is his look.

Also re: Melinda.  Right now i think she may have the strongest voice. And right now i think she will win. But she isn't my favorite.  I like her. I think she is nice and so humble. And i do like her.  But she is so shy.  And all her songs seem to be sung in the exact same style.  I would just like to see her change things up a bit, be more current. Come up with something new.

Anyhow i know she is loved. And is way more popular than anyone else. So she will probably win.  But i don't think those who don't like her best should be thought of as dumb.

Waitingnthe lobby at street level , as promised, was DR FJL... we taxied to the Quad and were soon enjoying DR Edisaurus' wonderful Sacco and Vanzetti

There was a very obvious hole in my education as I had never heard of this story before, I found in fascinating and horrifying

The Vixter was completely absorbed by the story... she said "I heard about it a little in Social Studies class but it sounded boring... THIS wasn't boring!  They should show this movie in schools!'

She also thought that The History Channel should show it every August.

Bravo Edisaurus!!! I am proud to know ya!!

As for the AMERICAN IDOL elimination, I called it right for a change. As I said last night, I didn't like her rendition at all and while I certainly did think she could sing, I didn't think this week did her any favors.

The groupings didn't surprise me at all either, and the top three ladies are definitely the best singers in the competition bar none.

First of all, we didn't use Pro Tools until around 2000 or thereabouts.  So, before then we all did it the same way.  I received the album masters for Grass Harp, and then spent many, many hours trying to get them to sound better - we were very successful, but it was really hard work because it just didn't sound good originally.

The Twiggy album didn't sell very well, but I adore it and it's one of my least known CDs - but everyone who takes a chance on it ends up being entranced with it.  It was one of the most fun albums ever and it was a real love affair between Twiggs and me, just an instant artistic bond.  When Tommy Tune came in to do his duet, he was very ill at ease in front of the microphone and very pitchy.  I went over to talk to him and was having a nice conversation, when Twiggy said loudly "Listen to Bruce and do exactly what he says!"
