Title: ABSINTHE MAKES THE HEART GROW FONDER
Post by: bk on April 11, 2007, 01:40:28 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes made the heart grow fonder, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they've been absinthe for far too long.

I was perusing IBDb.com (http://www.ibdb.com/) and noticed that on this day (April 11) in 2000, the play "Copenhagen (http://www.ibdb.com/production.asp?id=12519)," written by Michael Frayn, had its official Broadway opening!

BK, I'm sure that this has been asked before, but what was it like recording that show?  Other than the lack of music, how was it recording spoken dialog?  Any fun or dramatic or gossipy stories you can share??

And now, I'm off to bed.  Good night, BK.

Morning, all. I'm here by myself, in many ways. No one else is logged in and Anthony is on Long Island.

I'm eating oatmeal with a banana and raisins listening to a commercial for 110 in the Shade on WQXR.

I'ts 6:27 and that is all for now.

Good morning, all!  I have a day of catch-up errands this morning: the post office, bank, accountant, etc.  Tomorrow I go back to my normal scheduling.

My rental car had a CD player so on the way to the airport yesteday, I listened to Brent Barrett's Kander & Ebb album.  I'd forgotten how good it was.  It sounded great on the car's system.  I also listened to my one and only recording for Jerome Records, the short-lived company of a record producer who was paying for the company out of the millions he was embezzling from the company he worked for.  Never let a piano-arranger mix your recording: the orchestra's in Guam and the piano's pounding in your face.

DR MusicGuy, if you lose DR MBarnum's phone number, I believe you might find it in the men's room of any retirement center on the West Coast.

DR Jose, I'm happy all appears well with eBay.  How are the orchestrations?

DR SwishySarah, I too love Ben Folds.

That is all.  No questions, no answers, lots of regrets.

Now that All About Us is open for public viewing, I’ll post a few comments I had jotted down after viewing the final dress this past  Sunday night.

The good and the bad news is that the creative team has, IMHO, faithfully distilled the essence of Wilder’s play into a 2+ hour musical.  So if you like the source play, I think you’ll like this musical, but if you don’t, I don’t think that the addition of music [albeit charming music] will make you a convert to the material.

The show ran an uninterrupted 2.5 hours [aside for a few momentary technical glitches]; no intermission.  It sounds like they’ve tightened it up quite a bit by the first preview.  The three part structure of the source remained intact.  For me, the adaptation of the first part was just right.  I felt they dwelt a bit too long on the second part, at the expense of the third part, which seemed more perfunctory and seemed to have the least amount of music.  Dramatically, of course, the last section is much darker, so probably doesn’t lend itself to musicalization quite as well.

The score is unmistakably John Kander – it doesn’t sound like anyone else.  I wouldn’t say that it’s my most favorite of his scores, but it serves the piece well enough, and there are some really delightful moments.  I would really like to hear it again.  The band did pretty well for their first staged run.  The orchestrations are clear and clean. There were a few music cuing glitches that they stopped to iron out with the cast.

The design is spare but efficient, and functions beautifully.  The acting and singing were all at least proficient, and in some cases considerably more – particularly from the two Tony winners, Cady Huffman and Shuler Hensley.  Eartha was Eartha; the part suits her and  obviously plays to her strengths.  Wonderful material especially for Sabina, Mr. Antrobus, the mammoths, and the Philosophers.

I did not feel the sock-in-the-gut wrench of the third act material of the original material in this adaptation, which surprised me.  I’d figured they would work out a way to make that devastation hit home even more poignantly with music.  Although Shuler singing The Skin of Our Teeth at the end is very nice.

All in all, a very laudable effort with some great material.  There are plenty of laughs in the first 2/3 of the show.  Some nice performances.  And the creators, IMHO, have done a good job distilling and adapting the material to the new medium.  And of course, I was viewing a dress rehearsal, so all are still settling into their roles, notes, props, and costumes.

Thanks again to DR JoseSPiano for the opportunity to see just a little slice of the creative process at work.

Mr. Riedel, from the New York Post, has an informative column today about a group of hedge fund managers who want to be Broadway producers (did they see The Producers too many times?) and the tsuris it has caused the production team and the talent involved.

Cat (http://www.nypost.com/seven/04112007/entertainment/theater/the_roof_caves_in_theater_michael_riedel.htm)

Popo's not around today
But still it's PoPo's anyway
He left that in his popolicious will

Good morning DRs and H/Ks. ..... it is another sunny, pretty morning here in the desert.  I have great hopes of actually finishing up all of the sound-system elements for the new home theatre wall in my family room.  I would have finished yesterday, but whilst cutting out a piece of drywall in a "hollow" section of wall, directly between 2 vertical studs (OK TCB, Tom Oz, derBrucer, et.al. it's all your's), I encountered a sneaky diagonal brace running across the hole at a 45 degree angle.  So this morning a friend is stopping by with the needed type of power saw to remove this offending bit of wood.  Oh yes, I am offended at this time!

None of this, of course, is anything as exciting as having a lesbian with a tool belt move your electrical outlet.  By the way, I actually know a lesbian with a tool belt......nice girl!

Did any of the commentators for EASTER PARADE mention Miss Ann Miller's sudden change from High Heeled Shoes to Flats between her solo and her duet with Mr Astaire near the end of the movie?

Of course they did because she was taller than Astaire when wearing heels. MGM was smart to cover that point in the script when Miller mentions to her maid Essie - "Don't forget my slippers" before she starts her number on the Amsterdam Roof.

Kander & Ebb: What was your reaction when Mr. Fosse told you he was cutting all the book songs from the film of Cabaret?  And, what was your reaction to the songwriter characters when you saw All That Jazz?

Jule Styne: What did you say to Mr. Sondheim when you came in and heard how he'd taken your material and done Rose's Turn (assuming that story is not an urban legend)?

Jerry Herman: What did you say to the record producer at the Hello, Dolly! revival CD recording session about Miss Carol Channing's behavior? (Oh, I know the answer!)

Of course they did because she was taller than Astaire when wearing heels. MGM was smart to cover that point in the script when Miller mentions to her maid Essie - "Don't forget my slippers" before she starts her number on the Amsterdam Roof.

Miller herself stated that when she auditioned for the role she told Astaire she'd gladly wear ballet slippers while dancing with him if she got the part.

TOD:

In honor of the completion of your new book, BK, would you tell us all what prompted your foray into fiction and perhaps compare your fiction-writing experience with your other talents?

Back in the 80s on one of my many NY sojourns I was in the Mysterious Bookshop and saw that my pal Dick Lochte had written a mystery called Sleeping Dog.  I never even knew he was working on such a thing (he'd been a theater critic for LA Magazine, and occasional script writer, and did occasional stuff for the Book Review section of the LA Times).  I bought it and read it (a great book) and I was really impressed.  Now, I'd been thinking about writing some sort of novel - I wasn't sure what at that point, but I knew it would be a mystery or, as I was thinking then, something about me as a kid (maybe a mystery, too, with the fictional me having to solve a crime).

But, I was too chicken to do it (new territory and all - very scary).  I'd think about it every year, but in the end, nope.  After reading Dick's book I thought, holy moley on rye, this guy who'd never done it before, did it, and it's really good.

I then thought about it every year, once a year, until the beginning of the year 2001.  That was the year I said, "You know, you've never been chicken about anything in your whole life, so either do it or never think about it again.  The next day, I began to think about a story about my childhood growing up in LA.  Three months later, after writing down many anecdotes I wanted to talk about, I dove in and began writing.  I gave the first chapter (which became the prologue) to my friend Margaret, and she LOVED it, and encouraged me to keep going.  And I did.  That book took a little over nine months to write (2001 being a year of great turmoil), but, in the end, I did it - a lot of the thanks go to Margaret, who was so positive and wonderful about the book.

I learned several things about how best to use my time when writing, all of which have served me well on the subsequent books.

Last Night's "Idol":

It always amazes me at the snits the judges can get into when a poorly selected "theme" for the week results in blah song choices and performances.

Not one person among the 8 competitors is Latin, has any Latin singing experience.

To my knowledge, few major recording artists, outside of Latin ones, do Latin songs.

So....GET A CLUE!

Uniformly dull night.  NO ONE impressed me.  But then, there wasn't any one performance that was more dreadful than the rest.

Anyone COULD go tonight....but I suspect it will be Haley or Phil.

Maybe the brace is there for a reason?

Removing braces sometimes yields interesting results.

Removing yours would answer the nagging question:

Has anybody heard anything about the new show on FOX called DRIVE? It starts on sunday (although it is on in canada this friday).

I can't tell if it is part reality show or what?

DRIVE (http://www.fox.com/drive/showinfo/)

Quote
The next time you’re cut off by crazed drivers on your way to work, give them a little slack. They could be racing for their lives.

DRIVE is an action-fueled drama following a diverse group of Americans competing for their lives (or the lives of their loved ones) in an illegal, underground cross-country road race. Some of them have been coerced into joining “The Race”; others have sought out The Race themselves, hearing rumors of the $32-million prize. Each has a reason to compete. And each must win.

ALEX TULLY (Nathan Fillion, “Firefly,” “Slither”) is thrust into The Race in an effort to find his missing wife. New mother WENDY PATRAKAS (Melanie Lynskey) is on the run from her husband and competing for the safety of her newborn baby – or possibly something much more extraordinary. JOHN TRIMBLE (Dylan Baker) is a buttoned-down scientist who embraces The Race as the last chance to show his rebellious 15-year-old daughter VIOLET (Emma Stone) that he can be spontaneous. WINSTON SALAZAR (Kevin Alejandro) views The Race as an opportunity to leave his criminal past behind and bond with SEAN (J.D. Pardo), the half-brother he has only just met. Hurricane Katrina survivors IVY CHITTY (Taryn Manning, “Hustle & Flow”), LEIGH BARNTHOUSE (Rochelle Aytes) and SUSAN CHAMBLEE (Michael Hyatt) are determined to start their lives over and help rebuild their fallen city with The Race’s winnings. ELLIE HOWE (Mircea Monroe) sees The Race as an opportunity to keep her boyfriend, military specialist ROB LAIRD (Riley Smith), from being sent back to Iraq. And CORINNA WILES (Kristin Lehman), who becomes an uneasy partner with Alex, is a gorgeous and mysterious stowaway who may well hold the key to the secrets of “The Race” and its mysterious benefactors.

Although MR. BRIGHT (Charles Martin Smith), The Race liaison, has informed them that there are other competitors, the group does not know exactly whom they’re racing against, or even where the finish line is. With each mile clocked, the drivers get closer – not only to the end of the road and a critical, life-changing victory, but to understanding the mystery behind The Race itself.

Not quite. The target demographic is Concert Ticket Buyers and CD buyers - older teens and young adults. Sanjaya's main fan base seems to be barely pubescent girls.

It's not that he is so God-awful, it's just that he's not really great! An Idol needs to be more than warm and comfy - he needs to knock your sox off!

I like Fillions IMDB quote about playing Caleb:

Quote
My favorite villains are the ones you don't see coming. What I enjoyed about playing Caleb was that he was so very, very clever, so very, very sweet, and so very, very twisted. I liked that he's not a typical villain. He's soft and sweet and righteous, and yet he's perverted and twisted in his head.

Is he talking about producers?

Are any of the Los Angeles area HHWers planning to attend any of the Film Noir screenings at The Egyptian theater later this month?

I do believe I will go to see THE KILLING/SLEEPING CITY double feature which will have actress Colleen Gray in attendance for a Q and A on Wednesday April 25.

Unfortunately the movies that I really want to see are all playing the week prior to my arrival in Tinsletown.

I shall pre-purchase my ticket in case it gets sold out.

In my current shape, this girl named Fred is more "pop and fresh" than "mop and pail"  (a Pillsbury doughboy reference)

What actor was it about whom a critic said he was "more Pillsbury than Bloomsberry?"

TOP DESIGN limps to its conclusion tonight - I don't think I will watch the premiere episode of the Hair Design show that follows.

Very disappointed in the final two contestants and would have been MUCH happier with the OTHER distaff contestant that was sent home last week.  I do NOT like Carissa and think she has shown NO design savvy or talent.  Hopefully she will crash and burn tonight.

I thought I'd beat the others to it, and post my own picture of "2 vertical studs".  These 2 painted my house a few years ago.....it was such a chore to have to keep taking them cold water.... snacks...paper towels....cold lobster salad.....

Well, perhaps one vertical stud and a chicken little.

I can't believe tonight's IDOL is 1 hour. Yuck. I hate when they stretch these things.  I'll probably just tape it and ff through the boring parts. Or maybe just watch the last half.

If I'm not mistaken, we've seen the last of the half hour results shows. They're going to be long for the rest of the season.

Next, I watched last night's BOSTON LEGAL. Fun show though the trial Alan was a part of was a joke. One of the least convincing wins for him ever.

I didn't know Clarence had a different male alter ego. We'd only met the female ones.

I finished out the afternoon with DR. KILDARE'S CRISIS. I have never seen any of the Dr. Kildare/MGM series films with Lew Ayres though I've read about them for years and knew the characters before I ever saw this today. This would have served as a mediocre episode of the hour TV show stretched out to 75 minutes for this movie. Lionel Barrymore overacted like crazy; Ayres and Laraine Day were fine as Jimmy and Mary. Also a pleasure to see Nat Pendleton. In this film, Mary's brother was played by Robert Young, a future doctor himself, at least on TV.

And the neon sign keeps flashing:  PoPo's

Popo's not around today
But still it's PoPo's anyway
He left that in his popolicious will

(you can just fill in the rest if you're inclined :) )

Soon to be Sucessful Broadway writer, Bob Merrill really did write a Popo song - for Guy Mitchell

"Feet Up pat him on the PO-PO"

I have had an interesting day.

At about eight-thirty, der Brucer and I were awakened by a telephone call, which our answering machine picked up.  "Hello, Stephen?  It's Danielle.  Can you come in to work today?  Give us a call as soon as you can."

"You'd better get that," der B suggested.

I called, and found that our cart wrangler, Andre, had called out.  Sure, I'd be glad to come in and help.  I told Danielle that I'd be there as quick as I could.

I quickly showered and dressed, and was at the store by nine.  That was when we found that Andre had not called out, but had called to say that he would be late.  There had been a jumble of communications.  Someone else had called out.

That someone was Fran, who works in the produce department.  He had the flu, leaving Jack, the produce manager, without an assistant and a large stack of orders to place.  Would Jack like someone to help?  He most certainly would!

So I spent my day moving produce from our refrigerated stock room out onto the floor, and into their appropriate bins.  In the process, I got to help customers with their questions ("Where are your prunes?"  "What is arrugula?"  "Aren't the strawberries still on sale for $1.49 a pound?"  "Are you completely out of limes?"  Aisle four, on the left.  It's a spicy and bitter herb that is used in salads.  I'm so sorry, that sale ended on Sunday, and yes, they are delicious.  Yes, I'm afraid that we are out of the regular limes, but we have the smaller Key limes in these bags, if you're willing to substitute.) and survived a few jokes from both co-workers and regular customers who were surprised to find me away from the registers.

I also discovered that I do not like blueberries.  The flimsy little plastic jewel boxes that they are sold in tend to slip when stacked, and before you can say "oops" I'm on my knees trying to pick up the rolling, bouncing critters before anyone steps on them.

However, Jack was appreciative that I didn't require a lot of supervision, letting him tend to his ordering.

My back may ache tomorrow, of course, since I've been using a few muscles in ways they normally don't get used, but it was worth it.

And that's how my day at work was spent.

...I would have finished yesterday, but whilst cutting out a piece of drywall in a "hollow" section of wall, directly between 2 vertical studs (OK TCB, Tom Oz, derBrucer, et.al. it's all your's), I encountered a sneaky diagonal brace running across the hole at a 45 degree angle....None of this, of course, is anything as exciting as having a lesbian with a tool belt move your electrical outlet....
Ah, but having a lesbian with a toolbelt working in between two vertical studs!  Now THAT could get interesting!

Well, now, let's see...

One of our most senior cashiers, Mike, has a partner named Dennis.

One of our front-end managers, Larry, has a partner named David.

On the other hand, one of the other workers in produce, also named Larry (who wasn't in today), doesn't have a partner but if he did have a partner said partner would be named Dennis or David or some other name like that.

Including myself, most of the fruit is working at the checkout registers and not in produce, three to one.

My goodness, this is a slow news day here at haineshisway.com.  As Babs and Donna said, Enough Is Enough.  Let's get some postin' goin' on.

I've started proofing - finding silly little spelling and grammar errors, and a couple of things I have to smooth out - mostly one particular description which I wrote in a certain way, without having really seen a photo of what I was describing.  I now know exactly how to describe it and will redo that little section.  I'm forty pages in and I'm very pleased with how it's reading.

Good evening!  I thought I'd better spend some time here tonight, because I'll be E&T tomorrow and much of Friday.

Tomorrow, I'm going to Lima (OH) Public Library to give a lunchtime presentation to their local nonprofit coalition, then on to Bluffton for a week-before-the-big-event pow-wow with the local arrangements chair for the AAUW/Ohio conference.

Friday, I'll check in here early, then take DH Richard to the local outpatient center for surgery on his left shoulder.  The MRI didn't reveal a rotator cuff tear like he had 4 years ago in his right shoulder, but some arthritis that needs to be debrided.  The doctor said sometimes they find tears that the MRI didn't see, but not very often.  Vibes would be appreciated.

The good news is that I'm away from the downtown homeless shelter public library now until next Tuesday.

From today's Washington Post:

Seating in Ancient Greek Theater Found to Help the Acoustics

The Greek theater of Epidaurus has long been considered a marvel of acoustics. Over the years, people have come up with a number of explanations as to why those who sit in the back of the semicircular theater, built in the 4th century B.C., can hear performers on the stage with such clarity.

One theory was that it had to do with the wind patterns in the area, but modern actors performing on windless days sounded just as clear.

Researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology this month showed that the secret is in . . . the seats. Nico Declercq and Cindy Dekeyser found that the seating, which is carved from limestone, creates an acoustic filter that screens out low frequency crowd noises and reflects higher frequency sounds from the stage.

In a paper in the April issue of the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, the researchers said that while the filtering also suppressed part of the range of frequencies of the human voice, "the human nerve system and brain are able to reconstruct this fundamental tone by means of the available high frequency information."

Well, I am glad to say that the head office sent someone to look at the hotel, and they say it is "questionable." So they have rebooked folks at another hotel.

Glad to hear it, DR LAURA. I had a situation like that once. The secretary booked several of us into a motel which sounded fine from the directory she used. Unfortunately, we did NOT discover the truth until we got there. Ugh! It was cheap for a reason (several reasons, actually).

ANOTHER BK Question:

Can you tell us a little bit more about Lisa Cutler who sings the demo of Hold Me, Touch Me, Thrill Me,

As I wrote here when I first heard what was on the tapes I'd sent to be mastered, I had no idea who the vocalist on the demos were, nor did I have any memory of doing the demos at all - obviously I did them, as that's me singing with her.  I don't have any memory of Miss Cutler at all - either she was someone I knew and have forgotten (doubtful) or she was a friend of Mr. Spear's.

I do believe I heard Bruce mention these to me as "should go see if I have a chance movies", so I might just be there :)

This is a fiscal year corporate return (July 31 year-end) which is actually on final extension until April 17.  Many of the states involved, though, allow until May 15, so we'll be availing ourselves of that largesse for those states that are generous enough to allow that.

Speaking of singdaw and cookies:  Wasn't it Mrs. (Dorothy) Fields who wrote something like:

Singdaw, singdaw,
Everybody's traveling on a crazy singdaw.
Going up, down, up, down,
So, your life goes by,
Your either low or high
On the

Singdaw, singdaw,
You can dream you'll go anywhere you want to go
But that's not so...
Somehow you know,
The truth is nobody is goin' anywhere,
Nobody is gettin' anywhere...
So what if you never get anywhere?

One hell of a ride!

I began my evening watching Stephen Frears THE QUEEN. An interesting film, very enjoyable, and, at least if the movie is to be believed, the moment when a monarch who had become insulated from her subjects learned that the world and its people had changed and had different expectations of their sovereigns. Helen Mirren was superb (her walk among the flowers at Buckingham Palace could be a master class for actors), and I was just as impressed with the jaunty Michael Sheen as Tony Blair.

Post by: Matt H. on April 11, 2007, 08:34:07 PM
Next I watched the "making of" documentary on the DVD. Very routine stuff, but nice to see the actors out of make-up and character; that's always enjoyable, especially their expressions of nerves playing real (still living) people.

Post by: Matt H. on April 11, 2007, 08:37:01 PM
I began listening to the first audio commentary featuring director Frears and screenwriter Peter Morgan, but Frears seemed to be there only grudgingly while Morgan did his best to engage him in conversation. Not a scintillating discussion, but I did find out why the Tony Blair scenes seemed grainy on the DVD: they were filmed in 16mm and Elizabeth's scenes in 35mm to accentuate the class difference between them!

I received my THIRD batch of KIMMEL GARAGE SALE CD's today....and they are lovely.

BUT - I must comment on one I received a couple of days ago:

TWIGGY - I purchased because I like a LOT of the songs and of course DR MBARNUM recommended it as well.

I cannot say enough about this sweet CD.  And what fun singer Miss Twiggy is.  BUT what I love MOST about this CD is one of Mr DR ELMORE's arrangements.

This is a song by a Hoosier writer.  It is a song that I only knew from the original soundtrack of STAR! with Ms Julie Andrews.  A song that was embedded into my brain....but this new arrangement and new singer made the song NEW to me all over again.

It is one of the cleverest arrangements I have ever heard, and I love the song even more.

"The Physician."

DR MusicGuy - And what did you serve with the lobster salad?  A nice Sancerre?  Champagne?  Corona Extra?  Just enough Everclear to "subdue" them?  ;)

In addition to Mr. Vonnegut, Mr. Roscoe Lee Browne has also passed away.  One of my favorite actors.

Lesson  for the week "Keep Away From Runaround Sue". I wonder who was the cad who suggested that song.

It was a #13 hit for Leif Garrett in the 1970's and#1 for Dion in 1961. Ernie Maresca was a good pop writer. The pianist did deserve shooting.
