Well, you've read the notes, the notes had no more ado, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're coming home without further amoo.

RE: the new FOX show tonight DRIVE.

I won't give spoilers. But like I said last week the 2 hour premiere was on in Canada on Friday.  I wasn't really expecting to like this show. But i did.  I can't really say if others here will love it.  But it was quite good.

It follows a bunch of people on an illegal race around the country.  The characters are quite good.  And the people running the race are crazy.  The part that i really liked is that things that don't seem to make sense are clarified later.

I'm looking forward to part two tomorrow.

Btw, i happened upon a site that has the reviews for new shows. Here are a few for DRIVE:

DR VIXMOM the Scissor Sisters clip was from the Brits 2007 awards that I watched on BBC America....there are a few other clips and a video of them singing the song on YouTube and none of them are staged that way, so I don't think it's available on DVD.  If you get BBC America just watch for a repeat of the BRITS 2007 awards....it's the opening number.

Good morning, all!  A wet day in NYC, and I have to go out in it.  Toyland calls loudly, and I must obey.

Yesterday I received a large quarterly check from ASCAP of several hundred dollars.  I am puzzled since I usually get quarterly checks of around $25.  I wonder if ASCAP will ask for it back?  It's going to pay for a critical edition of either Gilbert & Sullivan or Verdi.

DR Jose, what happened to the keyboard player you're suddenly replacing?  Is this all part of your diabolical plan to take over the world?

I finished reading Julia Child's memoir, My Life in France, last night.  She certainly captured the adventure of discovery and change that she went through, moving forward to becoming "Julia Child," along with some of the bittersweet effects of leaving other parts of her life behind.

While she doesn't exactly say so, it's clear that simple male chauvanism was behind Mastering the Art of French Cooking being rejected by so many publishing houses before it landed at Knopf.  The men in charge kept insisting that housewives weren't interested in complicated recipes, that they only wanted mixes to simplify their lives, and that was all they should want.  It was the women in publishing who championed the book.  Thank heaven for women, in this case!

Good morning, DR S. Woody!

Good morning, all!

Rained cats, dogs, and other pets last night, and today continues the rain and gray skies above. Ugh! A nice day to stay inside, do laundry and other chores, and watch some movies.
Title: Re:WITHOUT FURTHER ADO
Post by: Matt H. on April 15, 2007, 07:04:56 AM
I went to bed last night going over in my mind which previously watched and unwatched movies I wanted to watch today.

For previously watched movie - CHARADE. I haven't seen it in awhile and it's time now. Watching the clips on the Stanley Donen interview also reminded me I wanted to watch it again.

For unwatched movie - MY DREAM IS YOURS, the next in the Doris Day box. I am always surprised this film is in TEchnicolor. The first time I ever saw it was on a black and white TV, so it's been burned into my brain that the movie was filmed in B&W. Nope. Looking forward to another early Doris Day film.

On the DVR, I have BREAKFAST ON PLUTO which I'd like to view and get erased from the DVR. If I don't watch it soon, the DVR will automatically erase it unless I tell it not to. It's been on the DVR for months.

Speaking of Harry Potter, there was an article in today's newspaper about the upcoming publication of the last book in the series. Pretty amazing how the fever for the character and his world has grown over the years.

Wonder what the next book series will be that will capture the imagination of the world like this one has?

Tonight there are new episodes of the CBS line-up. As DR Jennifer has mentioned, there is the new series DRIVE on Fox (but I'm not going to be watching; reading about the characters in the paper just didn't make the series appeal to me).

Of course, HBO has new episodes of THE SOPRANOS and ENTOURAGE, and Showtime has a new episode of THE TUDORS. Looking forward to all of those shows.

DR elmore - I'm not replacing anyone in the pit.  Basically, everyone is rotating.  Patrick V. has been conducting this past week, while his associate, Jim L., has been playing the synth part.  Originally, once Patrick returned to A Chorus Line - today - Jim was going to conduct from the keyboard.  But after realizing just how much conducting and playing involved, Patrick asked me if I would be interested in covering the keyboard book so that Jim could conduct "keyboard-free".  So...  The changing of the guard takes place this afternoon.

*And I think it's actually a good thing I'm a bit fatigued - I won't have the energy to get nervous.  I just have to play.

DITCH ROSIE (http://news.aol.com/entertainment/tv/articles/_a/after-imus-delay-calls-for-rosie-to-be/20070413103809990001)
Quote
After Imus, DeLay Calls for Rosie to Be Fired
Wants Conservatives to Lead Anti-O'Donnell Push
AOL
(April 13) -- Fanning the flames of discontent sparked by the Imus controversy, former congressman Tom DeLay is making a plea for his fellow conservatives to get Rosie O'Donnell fired for recent remarks she made.

"I'm calling for conservatives to take on Rosie O'Donnell," DeLay said during an interview with CNN. "She criticized and ridiculed Chinese-Americans, she accused the president of being responsible for 9/11. Let's now start calling for her resignation."

He also recently penned an article on TownHall.com titled "If the Left Takes Imus, We’ll Take Rosie."

I think Rosie is as babbling nut-case; her 9/11 Conspiracy theories are fruit-cake ramblings; her prattling does a disservice to the country; I'd be pleased to see her off the air.

That said: she hasn't spouted anything that has not already been bantered on numerous web-sites; her most vocal detractors (read O'Reilly) offer a platform to equally fringe positions that also do a public disservice - particularly the xenophobic rantings on illegal immigration by him, Gibson and Malkin.

The true conservative has in his hands the means to silence Rosie - it's called a remote!

der Brucer

Good Heavens, if he right dumps Rosie, we might lose Ann!

Sunday greetings!  It's cold and blustery here, but we're not getting the precipitation that's charging up the east coast.

This evening, DH Richard and I are taking my mother to see The Lion King at Cincinnati's Aronoff Center for the Arts.  The ticket was her Christmas present and she's pretty excited.  Not only has she never seen LK (I've seen it twice, DH once), this will also be her first trip to the Aronoff.  She watches a lot of Cincinnati TV, so has heard a lot about it since moving here 8 years ago.

DR JRand - I may have missed it, but...  Did you ever get through the rest of The Skin of Our Teeth?

DR Jose. tell Patrick hello!

DR Danise, it's so good to see you.  How's everything going?

The rains have soaked my shoes but Toyland is still there - for the nonce - and I have returned home and I have disc 2 of the first season of UPSTAIRS DOWNSTAIRS to view today.  I haven't seen the series since it's first airing and it has me hooked.  again.

And a very happy Sunday to all of the lovely H/Ks and DRs here.  It is a sunny day and mild here in Phoenix, but the wind is starting up and looks like it may increase some.  It is Gay Pride weekend here in Phoenix, so there are a number of festivities around the middle of the city, and lots of good looking folk walking around.

Where has that naughty dear MBarnum been keeping himself the past few days?  Come out, come out wherever you are dear MB.....

Thank you for the DRIVE reviews, Jennifer.  However, I think that since FIREFLY was my Spring DVD puchase, I will rewatch a couple of those epsodes also starring Nathan Fillian, plus Alan Tudyk and Adam Baldwin.

Great new avatar, Michael S.

DR JoseSPiano, if Patrick is detained and doesn't make it back in time, is it possible that Jim would conduct and you would play this afternoon?

Today marks the 95th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic at 2:20 a.m.  It sounds stupid, I suppose; but ever since I visited the wreck site back in 1996, I have felt that I have finished the voyage that a psychic once told me I started back in 1912.  It, also, cured my fear of being out on the water at night.

Starting to finalize (is that a contradiction?) theatergoing plans for my jaunt to Pittsburgh from Thurs. night through Sunday afternoon - going with Ronni to see Ahrens and Flaherty's The Glorious Ones on Friday night, then joining the delightful Ann (of All That Chat) to see a local production of Ntozake Shnage's 1970's hit For Colored Girls... on Sat. night.  (There's a local production of Reefer Madness that's a possibility for the Sat. matinee, but I'm wondering if that's worth seeing onstage since there's a TV version so readily available.)

One of the possible causes identified by environmentalists is, of course, global warming, because global warming causes everything from my aunt’s gout to the performance of the Kansas City Royals. Other hypothetical triggers might include sunspots; in continental Europe, they naturally perceive a link to genetic modification of crops, as this is their standby excuse for everything bad that can’t be rationally blamed on either global warming or George Bush.

The case against handsets
Evidence of dangers to people from mobile phones is increasing. But proof is still lacking, largely because many of the biggest perils, such as cancer, take decades to show up.
Most research on cancer has so far proved inconclusive. But an official Finnish study found that people who used the phones for more than 10 years were 40 per cent more likely to get a brain tumour on the same side as they held the handset.

Equally alarming, blue-chip Swedish research revealed that radiation from mobile phones killed off brain cells, suggesting that today's teenagers could go senile in the prime of their lives.

Studies in India and the US have raised the possibility that men who use mobile phones heavily have reduced sperm counts. And, more prosaically, doctors have identified the condition of "text thumb", a form of RSI from constant texting

Yes, I choreographed that production and if I am upset it's because I'm still waiting for my cheque! The Broadway prod. is a transplant of the London one, so I assume (maybe wrongly!) that it is the same choreographer, even though, that number has been modified for Broadway!

If one looks carefully, there's a costume change for the main characters at the start of the number!

I am WEIRD because, when I see that number, I WANT to go and see the show! Colour me different!

DR Francois, I saw MP in New York, and I think it's a disaster with good moments and a few good performances.  While PL Travers may have been unhappy with the film, it's much better dramaturgically, musically and choreographically than the turkey Cameron Mackintosh produced.

The Broadway prod. is a transplant of the London one, so I assume (maybe wrongly!) that it is the same choreographer, even though, that number has been modified for Broadway!

I am WEIRD because...

Yes, Matthew Bourne still gets the credit.

Since I really enjoy the London Cast Album, and have never been disappointed by a Bourne endeavor, I am looking forward to seeing the show. As you admit, the YouTube clips are not the finest representation - the official Mary Poppins on Broadway (http://disney.go.com/theatre/marypoppins/index.html) has much better video material.

You are WEIRD because....

I began my afternoon of viewing with CHARADE. It's just as wonderful as it always was, and though that DVD on the reverse side of THE TROUBLE WITH CHARLIE looked a bit grainy this time around, it's still got good color and solid mono sound (but how glorious would that film be now if there could have been that superb Mancini score in stereo surround!)

Next came MY DREAM IS YOURS. I think the transfer is slightly better than the one for ROMANCE ON THE HIGH SEAS. Color seems just a tad more saturated, but the film is as sharp as the previous one. There seem to be fewer speckles and bits of dirt on this one.

This has been the weirdest weather day. The sun has continuously come out and gone back into hiding, and when the sun goes away, the rain comes out to play. And thanx to you, sir, I'm a tad poorer! BestBuy had a reconditioned up-convert DVR on sale for $79 (but missing the remote) - you didn't warn me that the dang HDMI cable cost a months wages! I was hoping to consult with you before making a puchase (they run abou $300 at Sam's), but the Best Buy deal looked pretty darn good. The unit does not record, and has no VHS, but all I really care about is enhancing our viewing pleasure with our DVDs. I think I got it hooked up and working - sure looks and sounds great.

High quality HDMI cables can be found for Buy-It-Now prices under $10 at Ebay. I've gotten all of my HDMI cables there (except for my Sony upconverting player which came with an HDMI cable in the box as I recall).

Title: Re:WITHOUT FURTHER ADO

Good Evening!

Well, here's the short version of the story:

-What's happening with the trains and vans?
"Get on the van now, it will take you to the train station!  The highways are closed!"

Run, run, run...

-Hold ON!  LET MET ON THE VAN!!!
"Get in quick, we can just make the train!"

After passing a couple of cars, and cutting through a few parking lots - Thank You, James (our driver, our cute driver!) - we made it to the station with a minute to spare!

"Trains will be going express to Grand Central after Stamford"

"Trains will now be stopping at Mount Vernon East due to track being washed out.  Transfer to a local train, and take that to Woodlawn, and transfer to the subway to get into Manhattan."

So, that's what I had to do.  That's what all of us on train had to do.  -Although, we were given the option of riding the train back up to Westport.... Nope!

The train left Westport at 5:31.  Normally, it would have pulled into Grand Central about an hour later.  Tonight, I stepped into my apartment at 8:55.  Whew!!!!!!!

And at least I made it home.  There were about 20-25 cast and crew members who tried to get onto the 6:31 train from Westport.  The last time we checked, they were stalled at the next train station, awaiting word if they could continue on - or have to turn around.

Thank you, DR MusicGuy.

And I actually am feeling much, much better right now.  -Even after walking a couple of blocks in the rain.  I still have some chest congestion to deal with, but otherwise, I really do feel on the mend.

DR JoseSPiano, if Patrick is detained and doesn't make it back in time, is it possible that Jim would conduct and you would play this afternoon?

Well, that almost happened.  Patrick was still not in at half hour.  And still not at fifteen.  Then at eight...

Jim and I were in standby mode just in case.

However, the worst part of the whole situation today was that Patrick had driven back to Westport.  -In fact, he had basically just woken up when he got the call to come back in.  And since parts of 95 and the Hudson Parkway were/are closed, he might be stranded up in Westport tonight.  (Along with some of the other company members.)  I really do hope he makes it back tonight.  So much for a day off.

For those who are interested, here's Merissa's set list:

Astonishing
A Summer In Ohio
Lion Tamer
You Can Always Count On Me
Is It Really Me?
Girls Just Want To Have Fun (The 80s Medley)
It's A Fine, Fine Line
If I Were A Bell
Wherever He Ain't/Time Heals Everything
Happily Ever After
For Good
Gimme Gimme
How Did We Come To This? (Encore)

That is a good set list.  Actually, it's also a really good audition book.  -Which I'm guessing is what she drew most of her material from for this review.  I'd say all that is missing is a classic Gershwin, Porter, Rodgers & Hart, etc., ballad.

Brothers & Sisters airs here at 7pm (this has nothing to do with the show).  And at the commercials they sometimes have this part where they dish about the actors.

Tonight they said something slightly disturbing. It went something like this, "rumor has it sally field is dating one of her co-stars (david something)".   Then they flashed a picture of the actor who plays her youngest child (justin).

OMG!  Is this true.  I guess she is 60+ and he plays younger than he is (i think there is a 30+ yr difference).  The part that sort of freaked me out is that he plays her son. Does anybody else find that weird?

The birthday girl is very beautiful. I can see what you will be looking like in years to come!

Conratulations and Happy Birthday to your MOM!

Thanks Vixmom.  I was very worried about her when she got sick on the way home from AZ, but she is doing well now and had a wonderful time at her party

HERE'S THE DIRT (http://www.glitteratigossip.com/glitterati/2007/02/sally_field_and.html)

Quote

Sally Field and David Annable Dating?
Maybe he likes her, he really likes her.

Sally Field portrays a mother of five on the ABC drama 'Brothers & Sisters' and may be robbing her own cradle.

Field, 60, is said to be dating her 27-year-old on-screen son David Annable, according to a source on set.
The twice-divorced mother of three grown sons has reportedly been canoodling with Annable during filming breaks and already shares a plethora of inside jokes with him.

"Just because Sally is mature doesn't mean she still isn't sexy. Her youthful exuberance makes her seem like she's 30 years younger. She's still a very attractive woman," the source says.

Here's to you, Mrs. Robinson.

I'm sure Woody Allen is appalled!

I've been pushing to get Mr. Spirtas for the cabaret series I subscribe to at the Crest Theater in Delray Beach. I am friendly with the producer. He has heard about him and I gave him a copy of the cd and DVD in hoping that he will hire him for a future season.

Not weird to me at all. And it's not the first time it's happened. Greer Garson ended up marrying the guy who played her son (Richard Ney) in MRS. MINIVER after the picture was finished shooting.

And of course, Laurence Olivier married Joan Plowright who played his daughter in THE ENTERTAINER. Of course, that was a much older man with a young woman, but I guess few would find that odd.

RE: Mary Poppins - I saw the Broadway production a couple of weeks ago, and liked it.  I didn't love it, but I liked it.  The "Jolly Holiday" number is better scene from "the front", rather than from someone illegal bootleg copy from a cheap(er) balcony seat.  I think the only real quibble I had was with the "Feed the Birds" sequence - I was hoping for a more imaginative treatment.  -Oh, and then there was the "Temper, Temper".  But again, I liked the production a lot.

And that "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" number truly is amazing.  *A friend of mine is a "swing" in the show, and I truly don't her - she had to learn eight different tracks for that number alone.  That's a LOT of hand movements!

The Lennon Sisters certainly made a little talent go a LONG way!

And I will never forget their reaction to Paul Lynde on the Hollywood Squares....  Lynde in the center and two Lennons on either side.

Peter Marshall:  Paul, what is the proper way for a girl to cross her legs, at the ankle or at the knee?

Paul Lynde:  Neither, if she wants to get anywhere in show business.

And all Four Lennon Sisters were still laughing after the commercial break.   ;D

I am home. That is all.

And now you can do a survey of all homes built before the war and see how many have three conductor electrical systems. My Long Beach CA house had the original knob and tube wiring - no three-prong receptacles there! Many older building have unauthorized upgrades that install three-prong receptacles (to accommodate modern plugs), but only hook up the two power slots and leave the ground slot open!

(To get my computer equipment properly connected, I had to run a ground wire from a stake beside the water meter beneath the dining room window and under a ledge separating the room from  the kitchen up to the wall outlet where  it connected to the power line that fed the electronics.) Not even the garbage disposal had a ground!

When my roof leaked after the earthquake, water ran down the insulation coving the wires in the attic and filled up a bedoom lighting switch - noted when the lights stayed on even when the switch was off!

BestBuy had a reconditioned up-convert DVR on sale for $79 (but missing the remote)

Beware if they tell you they'll send the remote right out as they did us. It took us almost a year of calling them before we actually got ours for our DVD/VHS deck. It was basically useless to us until we got he remote but they wouldn't extend our service agreement.

When I asked them about it they said they would extend the agreement if I brought it in to show them that it hadn't been used. So I unhooked it and brought it in---a real pain---and they told me that they never would have extended the servce plan and whoever told me that was wrong. They were so rude I was ready to throw it at them!

No.

Back from a lovelier than lovely supper with Mr. Kevin Spirtas (pronounced "spear") and seeing Twelve Angry Men, which I really enjoyed quite a bit.  Did anyone see this production on B'way?  I thought our cast did very well, but the NY cast was really killer.
