Title: LICORICE TWIST
Post by: bk on April 17, 2007, 12:07:16 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had both licorice and a twist, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they'll be home just as soon as they finish telling the story of The Randy Vicar and the Pulled Pork.

Today I listened to one of the all-time oddest albums I've ever heard - it was presumably lost - never released, but somehow someone found a test pressing, and that's what the CD was made from.  It's from a legendary producer I've never heard of called Joe Meek, and it was made in 1960 and then shelved.  It's called "Those Plucking Strings" and features the Charles Blackwell Orchestra playing folk songs with melody line played by pizzacato strings.

Joe Meek is indeed a legendary producer of pop records. He was obsessed with Buddy Holly and committed suicide on the anniversary of Holly's death.

Meek is best remembered for "Telstar" bur produced MANY discs that were successful in the UK.

She is well -- she is working on her third paper for her degree...well, she was, I think she may have finished it this evening.

She is looking at making a trip out here towards the end of this week/week-end, so it'll be really nice to have her out to LA and me being able to return the favor as I've been the one who has been coming back to Arizona a bunch here lately.

Joe Meek is indeed a legendary producer of pop records. He was obsessed with Buddy Holly and committed suicide on the anniversary of Holly's death.

BK and Tomovoz, have you ever heard the song "Lucky Star" by Dave Stewart and Barbara Gaskin about Joe Meek? It is beautiful and haunting.

He was a very interesting guy---a great producer but tone-deaf, if you've ever heard him sing. (WFMU has a sample of that in their archives.)

He killed himself on my birthday.

"Joe Meek - The Alchemist Of Pop" is an excellent introduction to his work.

You can find some cuts from Joe Meek: The RGM Legacy / Portrait of a Genius on Irwin Chusid's archived show on WFMU:

Where else on the internet can you get Joe Meek, Eartha Kitt and the cast and chorus of "Love Me Tonight" (not to mention The Mghty Sparrow performing "More Cock"?) I ask you??

Coram Boy

It's quite a spectacle. It's too long, just shy of 3 hours with a 15 minute intermission. It's Dickensian in both scope and subject. It takes place in England in 1742 and 1750 (Acts 1 and 2 respectively) and concerns two boys who meet in a Cathedral choir school and become fast friends. Act 1, perhaps because of the length (90 minutes) is not as powerful as I think they want it to be. It drags and needs trimming (IMHO). Act 2 is more powerful and gives you the emotional charge you were hoping for, although the plot is rather standard issue boys become friends, evil man working for an orphange, dismissive father with reconciliation, etc. I do wish there had been a better resolution of the disgustingly evil orphan seller. I recommend it but I do have to say the buzz about the London production made me think I was getting another Nicholas Nickleby but that's not what happened. It's a good, solid production with an excellent performance by Jan Maxwell in a smaller role but I didn't feel it was the amazing play it's built up to be.

But before I go, Jose, even though it's in my neighborhood, you would know better perhaps. Does the sinfully delicious Little Pie Shop (discussed in depth last night) still have an outlet on 14th Street and 9th Avenue? That Sour Cream Walnut Apple Pie is amazing!!! A slice of that and a cup of coffee while sitting at the counter before going to the theatre is heaven!

And now off to the kitchen.

So... I get into bed around midnight.  I decide to go ahead and sleep sitting up since my acid reflux seems to be kicking into high gear.  Which it did.  With a vengeance.  So, I took a Pepcid AC to help thing out, about an hour later my coughing stopped, and I think I got a few winks.  Then I suddenly woke up again, coughing and with a rather upset stomach, so...

Long story short, I'm up... And I'm just waiting till I'm a bit more awake to head down to the Duane Reade on the corner.

As for the Topic of the Day...

I remember PLAYING a dance on a wedding reception/dinner cruise in Richmond.  My band was on the second deck with all the kids and teenagers.  All they wanted to do was "The Electric Slide".  So, for 45 minutes straight, that's all we played.  Thankfully, we had a drum machine - those two(!!) chords songs get old fast.  Really fast!

Thanks.  I think I'm going to head out now.  And once I'm back, I'm hoping I can squeeze in a few hours of sleep.  I don't have to head to train station until 4:00 this afternoon, so there's plenty of time for naps, cat and otherwise.

I was up there with the associate conductor/keyboard II player, and the percussionist.  It was a bit weird being disconnected at times, but we didn't have to dress up, and we had our own bathroom.  But all of us would gather in the musician's locker/dressing room before the show and at intermission.

Re: Helen Hayes Awards III

Some people received muliutple nominations within the same category like Irina Tsikurishvili who received three separate nominations for choreography. She won one. I wonder if she thought what was wrong with the other two shows that the she was nominated for that she only won for one?

And why don't they just combine multiple nominations into one and award (or don't award) for the body of work that year?

I danced in the 70s. I do not indulge in that past time any longer. If it was the 1940s and there was real dancing I might change my opinion but jiggering around the dance floor to "house music" which sounds like the same 2 notes sampled and repeated endlessly is not my idea of dancing.
Title: Re:LICORICE TWIST
Post by: Ben on April 17, 2007, 05:27:33 AM
DR Singdaw, it was mostly excerpts from Messiah although Handel is a character in the second act and I think there was probably more of his music than I recognized. The end of the show features the Halleluia Chorus and it is a very nice moment.

TOD:

My primary dancing days were in the 80's and were mostly freeform.  But I have been known to, now and then, Hustle and Electric Slide.

What I had fun doing as a youngen was imitating my older sisters as they did 60's dancing in the living room.  The Mashed Potato, the Popeye, the Hitchhiker, the Monkey and the Jerk.  These steps are occasionally performed nowadays at weddings.

That's been a point of contention for years.  However, I do understand the reasoning behind not honoring the "non-resident" productions "too much".

*And some years, the only non-resident productions to play DC have been Mamma Mia! and Cats.

But then again, I've attended the HHA a couple of times.

Those nominations for Irina Tsikurishvili have also been a point of contention ever since her company came into existence.  They do there wordless adaptations of classics, and not-so-classics.  Sometimes there is music, sometimes there is not.  It's all movement.  I believe she's taken the past Choreography Award at least four times in the past couple of years, much to chagrin of some of the more "standard" musical theatre choreographers.

BK - Got your email and saw your posting from last night.  Whenever you can get to it is great.   (Just FYI, I'll be away with extremely limited email and internet access from late Thursday afternoon to Sunday night.)

I hate to ask this again (OK, hate is a strong word - but I hope it's not much trouble), but something's screwy with my building's package delivery system, especially with delivery confirmation, and it helped to have the tracking number and confirmation last time.   Could you either post or email me the tracking info for my second batch of CD's?  Last time, when I called armed with the tracking info, lo and behold they found it immediately.  Funny that.

All those old popular dances from the 1960s I did when I was in junior high and high school: The Twist, the Mashed Potato, the Pony, the Swim. By the time I started going to gay dance clubs in the late 1970s, it was pretty free-for-all style dances.

I'd still rather dance a slow dance holding my partner close and barely moving. That's the kind of dancing I most like now.

Most of the dance crazes were before my time, other then the Macarena (sp?) which I avoided.

I have attempted, in recent years, to do some of the '60s dances...but it was not pretty.

Dancing in the 1980s did not require much skill, so I did Ok back then...particularly after a few drinks.

DR Ron Pulliam -

Please let us know how you made out with dealt with the meddlesome co-worker!

Well now....it's been rather quiet on that "we" front lately.  In fact, I was rather delighted to hear her propose to someone else that "they" start walking the lake.

Perhaps my obstinate silence and non-participation in her fancy actually got through.

On the other hand, she and one other female co-worker have seemingly stepped up their "oh whatever will I do?" co-dependency tactics to involve me in their days by having me sort out the simplest computer problems they manage to encounter (things that are such no-brainers you'd cringe in disbelief).

I overheard the other one in a phone conversation yesterday...someone is coming here to visit my co-worker and she wants me to loan her a set of plans for her visitor to look at.  In her phone call she said, "Let me know what time you'll arrive, and I'll ALERT RON to be on STANDBY to provide us with the plans."

I walked to her door and glared at her.  "What?" she wanted to know.  I said, "I don't do STANDBY, and I don't respond to ALERTS.   I told you I'd loan you the plans in the morning.  They'll be on your desk well before you arrive.  I don't expect to be INVOLVED any further."

She got my drift.  The absolute and total AIRS some folks will put on to seem more important than they are.  UNbelievable.

I was up there with the associate conductor/keyboard II player, and the percussionist.  It was a bit weird being disconnected at times, but we didn't have to dress up, and we had our own bathroom.  But all of us would gather in the musician's locker/dressing room before the show and at intermission.

They had more than just their own bathroom....from the stories I recall, there were massive quantities of food laid out, as well!   :D

DR Jose re: TAR.

There are spoilers for most reality shows, TAR is no exception.  I'm quite sure that I could easily find out who wins. Or at least who is in the finals (televisionwithoutpity has huge spoiler threads).  And i'm pretty sure the order of elimination was reported many months ago.

SURVIVOR has the same type of spoilers out there.

I will definitely check out the TAR spoilers after the season ends. Although it will be interesting to see if having racers continue to pretend to race after they've been eliminated will throw off these spoiler whores!

Btw, re: our discussion last night about the promo. Obviously the text preview on cbs.com gives most of it away!

DR Jennifer,
Obviously it would be possible to find out who wins TAR, but then it wouldn't be any fun to watch.  I like to speculate a little, but I certainly don't want to know if I'm right or wrong until I actually watch the show.  I also know that the promos are cut to mislead or to make something that was a little insignificant detail look like a turning point.  So I wouldn't put too much stock in the promos.
Just my 2 cents

Some people actually seem to enjoy Sanjaya's presence on the show.

Some think he's got the "young" vibe that the show always claims it's looking for.

Not a few think he's a talented, too.

Given the thousands of auditions that were just plain terrible, Sanjaya still stands out.

BK - I can absolutely say without any fear of being wrong that they're simply lying if they said they attempted to deliver to us at 9:38 a.m. on Saturday morning.  I was sitting right in our living room at the computer working on a return with the NY1 Onstage TV program going on in the background.  The Post office employees clearly have no fear of lying, and have done so on many occasions.    The only Post office service that is 99.9999% reliable seems to be the overnight express service.  (They can't leave packages with the guy at the desk downstairs, because he's security and not a doorman, so I'd speculate what happened is that when the Saturday mail delivery guy found out he had to go all the way upstairs and couldn't leave it with a doorman, he just made up that he attempted delivery and put that info in the system.)

BUT...everyone is counting on you.  You stand here not wanting to do what you were born to do...but you're gonna do it.  You're gonna walk out on that stage and they're all gonna know the truth about you:

You're every inch a star.  There's nothin' you can do about it.  So "woman up" and take the stage and knock their socks off!

Some people actually seem to enjoy Sanjaya's presence on the show.

Some think he's got the "young" vibe that the show always claims it's looking for.

Not a few think he's a talented, too.

Given the thousands of auditions that were just plain terrible, Sanjaya still stands out.

And a lot of viewers are tone deaf.

A real prison uniform or something like they wear in cartoon prisons (white with the black horizontal stripes)?

I'm thinking more along the lines of one of those orange jumpsuits you sometimes see them wearing when they're being interviewed on TV.

Those should be easy to find....and any prison name can be stencilled on the back.

Does anyone know what I could use to fake a prison uniform? I would just get one, except that I can only find them in sizes ten times too large.

Guard or prisoner? If prisoner, a lot of the videos show the gals in white -- so white scrubs or white sweats/warm-ups (if elastic in the leg bottoms, just cut it off or cut out the elastic part and they'll look more like pants and cut the sleeves to make the top short sleeved) no make-up, no jewelry, no fancy hairstyle, maybe just pulled back in a pony tail. If you want to go with the old-timey stereo-typical prisoner look, get the black eletrical tape and make stripes on your white outfit. Guard? Black slacks, belted if possible, with white short-sleeved shirt tucked in, black shoes, hair slicked back in bun -- and buy some cheap badge (kids toy department -- usually can find those little police kits with the gun, badge, handcuffs, etc.).  Or if you just happen to have beige pants and a beige short-sleeved shirt (Hah! -- the boy scout type - might be pushing it, huh?)  Some times they wear blue uniforms, or the beige ones -- but those may be hard to find -- so just create the illusion with the black or dark navy pants and white shirt with badge accessories (even if you resemble a police woman more than a guard -- it's the illusion that you're after for your class scene -- it ain't Broadway as us community theatre costumers are often forced to say).

Oh, and good call on the stencil idea, Mr P -- if you go with the white or the orange, stencil the name of a prison  or jail (they usually just have "County Jail" on them)  -- that would be a nice detail touch to add..

Yes,  I agree orange is the color most people associate with prisoners, but if she doesn't have time to track down an orange one, I figured she could find sweats pretty easily at Target, etc. -- and I have seen footage where the gals are in white sometimes -- or she can always go with pink boxers and place her scene in Phoenix where Sheriff Joe has those guys wear the pink boxers....DR Laura and MusicG will know what I'm talking about...

A difference between post office and private services:  When you call UPS or fedEx or DHL with a problem, they at least act like they care about a problem in their system.  With the post office, the answer I got when I pointed out that the delivery guy lied was "I have no control over our carriers."

She said they'll redeliver tomorrow.  We'll see if that happens.

DR Cillaliz, I also would not want to peek at the TAR spoilers.  I like being completely spoiler-free.  But like i said, i will check after the season is over just for curiosity.

I know some people like to read the spoilers. I know i read them religiously for big brother. But i don't consider that the same (since that is happening live and we are just not being shown what is happening).

I know a lot of people read survivor spoilers. I did that one year for allstars. And they know everything. I have a friend who does not normally read survivor spoilers. But he's found this season so utterly disappointing that he read them so that now he can study the editing.

Ah, but they do have control over their carriers, and someone paid for delivery confirmation - extra.  The control they have is that they can fire their carriers.  If the person you spoke to gives you that line again, immediately ask for their name and then a supervisor.  If you need to go beyond that I have names and numbers you can call.  If they don't redeliver tomorrow I would seriously do what I did and go directly to consumer relations.  Believe me, they don't rest until this nonsense stops.

Beat Generation, daddy-o! ....  Why am I here?

"How did I get into the world? Why was I not asked about it, why was I not informed of the rules and regulations but just thrust into the ranks as if I had been bought by a peddling shanghaier of human beings? How did I get involved in this big enterprise called actuality? Why should I be involved? Isn't it a matter of choice? And if I am compelled to be involved, where is the manager -- I have something to say about this. Is there no manager? To whom shall I make my complaint?" (Kierkegaard's "Repetition" reference)

Why don't I learn how to cut and paste like DR der Brucer so I wouldn't have to type out long passages? Most existential.. and with that I must really take my leave -- my kingdom for a conclusion!

MORE TAR speculation re: the yield next week.

First off in re: something DR Cillliz said about the promos being intentionally misleading.  I think usually the promos are accurate about what happens. They just sometimes either a) give too much away (like with rob and amber) or b) they make more of something than is necessary (they might play out something that is really not as significant as what they imply.

However the promo sunday was misleading on purpose since they clearly showed d/o and d/e as the ones making the deal.

DR Dan wrote last night:
Quote
On the actual CBS.com Amazin' Race site, they actually say about next week's episode:

"One team is left in a state of shock when they become victims of a deal between the Beauty Queens and a certain other Team."

My guess is that the target team is Mirna and Schmirna and that the other team is--Eric and Danielle!  I think that they're pissed off at how Mirna pushed her way onto the second flight ahead of them, which hurt them far more in the competition than the Barbies' Yield of them did.

I quoted this last night just before you did.

I sent an email to a friend before reading this.  And this is what i wrote.

Danny and oswald are hours in front of the other teams, so i don't think anybody could yield them. And i don't see them working with the blondes to yield anyone.

Right now charla/mirna are slightly ahead of Danielle/eric. But if d/e were to pass them, i could see d/e teaming up with the blondes.

I would guess d/e would consider yielding the blondes. But i don't think that will be an option (since the blondes are ahead of them).  I think the reason d/e would yield mirna is not really because they are mad at her (although this could figure into things with the blondes telling eric that mirna stole their standby place on the plane). I think that eric will realize that if he doesn't want to be eliminated, that he needs to use the yield (hypocrite anyone?).

Of course mirna will flip (since she thinks she has a F3 deal with d/e and d/o).

The thoughts above are my own. However after writing them i went to televisionwithoutpity (great forum) and someone wrote the exact same thing.  But they did go one further.  They said that perhaps the blondes would agree to let d/e finish first so they would not get the penalty. I don't really see that happening (unless danny and oswald screw up).

The blondes do not like mirna. So i could easily see them wanting to get her out.  And eric will definitely need to use the yield if he can to assure he can finish ahead of c/m.

Yeah it looks like there is a reasonable chance the wicked witch will be dead this week!

and it is a good one too! My only gripe with this CD is that it wasn't longer! I wanted more songs!

BK, did you know Kevin Spirtas is going to be a guest at the Ray Courts show next week? I will go and say hello to him...if he remembers me...if he doesn not remeber me I will just buy an autographed photo and tell him I loved him in The Hills Have Eyes Part 2.

Maybe he will have the table next to Laurie Mitchell and I and we can chat....I suspect that this will be a fairly dull show....not many guests lined up for it...even Lorenzo Lamas' addition to the guest list cannot liven it up.

Because you left New York without giving them a forwarding address. You will just have to go to Jackson Heights to get your Bollywood fix.

SAW IT COMING, DIDN'T WE!

(http://www.foxnews.com/images/foxnews_story.gif) (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,266523,00.html)

Quote
'Question Mark' Killer Quietly Seethed With Rage

Cho Seung-Hui, the gunman who apparently killed 32 people and himself Monday morning at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Va., seems to have been a shy, quiet type seething with rage at unspecified tormentors.

A rambling note left in Cho's dorm room reportedly railed for several pages against "rich kids" and "debauchery" and "deceitful charlatans" on campus, and at one point states, "You caused me to do this."

An English professor said Cho's creative-writing work was so disturbing that he had been referred to on-campus counseling services.

In one class, he refused to speak and signed his name using a question mark. Fellow pupils called him "The Question Mark Kid."

There were also reports that Cho, a senior majoring in English from Centreville, Va., had been taking medication for depression, and had also recently set fire to a dorm room and stalked women.

Seems everybody in town knew this kid was off his nut and just sat by and waited for the next show to drop!

Oh well, there is plenty of blame to go around.

Any bets on who sues the college counselor first?

Note for MattH (HHW pre-release guru):

I have in my Amazon Cart:

The following pre-orders:

Planet Earth - The Complete BBC Series
Dreamgirls (Two-Disc Showstopper Edition)
The Queen -
A Little Night Music
Night at the Museum (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Becket (Not indicated as Widescreen?)

Already released:

A Man for All Seasons (Special Edition)

Do you see any missteps?

Not a one. Not even A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC which, while disappointing, does give us Broadway's Len Cariou and Laurence Guittard and the scintillating Diana Rigg who couldn not have been better cast as Charlotte.

I didn't buy the new MAN FOR ALL SEASONS. I have the original release, and the new one is supposed to be sharper and with better color, but as I've only looked at the one I have a couple of times, I didn't see the need to upgrade. Allegedly, it's coming to Blu-ray, so I may think about upgrading when it's released on that platform.

Next, I went to the to-watch shelf and picked out PYGMALION on Criterion. I've had this for a couple of years but hadn't watched it. Of course, I kept missing the music from MY FAIR LADY, but it's nice to be able to see the story played out in 90 minutes or so.

The Criterion liner notes brag that this is a lustrous new transfer, but the materials they had to work with must have been near destruction since the film has very few places where it isn't damaged in some way with dirt, scratches and water marks all over the place. At several points, it's obvious they had to go to a very grainy 16mm print to find some missing scenes because the sound and picture don't match what comes before or after.

What a shame that such a masterpiece was allowed to deteriorate so horrendously.

I danced in the 70s. I do not indulge in that past time any longer. If it was the 1940s and there was real dancing I might change my opinion but jiggering around the dance floor to "house music" which sounds like the same 2 notes sampled and repeated endlessly is not my idea of dancing.

I only dance when my DH and I have imbibed enough at weddings. I hate house music; it makes me want to bite someone.

Joe Meek is pretty cool. He has an entry in the Big Book of Weirdos as he was a bit of a maniac, kind of like Phil Spector, except Meek killed himself. Which is a good lesson for maniacs, I think. If you think you are going to go on a killing spree, shoot yourself first. But I guess if they thought logically, they wouldn't be maniacs.

Anyways, like Phil Spector, Joe Meek's sound is pretty identifiable, as in the aforementioned "Telstar," and another smash he produced "Have I the Right?" by the Honeycombs.

I haven't had to do seams yet, but I always heard just take a black marker down the back of the leg.  What does Yahoo preach?

To me, they're like dazzling light displays.  But a little goes a long way.

Unlike traditional musicals, the musical numbers take me totally out of th e film's reality.  DR Mbarnum sent me one with John Abraham; he and the woman are plotting to kill her husband (DOUBLE INDEMNITY ripoff) and suddenly the woman is singing and dancing around her terrarium in a blue negligee.  It was soooooo in character that I was aghast, agape, and agog.  At the same time.

I read that due to the Virginia Tech slayings, tomorrow night's new episode of BONES which dealt with the death of a student whose body was found under the bleachers in a gym has been pulled and a rerun substituted. Probably a good idea.

OK, bk, I'll be recording THS SOPRANOS on DVDs to send to you. There are nine episodes in this last batch, so I'll keep it two episodes per disc to keep the quality up.

Usually after three episodes have run, HBO will play the first three episodes on a Friday night, so I'll keep an eye open for the rerun of that first episode.

Perhaps there should be a "Bollywood Challenge" -- for every Bollywood movie any Hainsie/Kimlet watches, DR MBarnum has to watch a classic American film he has never seen before...which is seemingly "a lot" of them.

;)

What??? I have seen NIGHT OF THE BLOOD BEAST, HOT CAR GIRL, MURDER IN THE BLUE ROOM, THE ATOMIC SUBMARINE, WAR OF THE COLOSSAL BEAST, CHARGE AT FEATHER RIVER, JAPANESE WAR BRIDE, ETC, ETC. what other great American classics...oh, right...I have yet to sit down and see THE ALLIGATOR PEOPLE. My bad.

For those with AOL, if you need a NAUSEATING fix today, click on the link to the plays that that killer boy in VA wrote.  Read the first play.  Okay, it's a little nauseating.  But then read a few pages of the 1500 posts that follow - it encapsulates perfectly everything that's wrong with the young people of this country, the internet and just about everything else.  Not only are these people stupid, but they are REALLY stupid, and, in certain ways, just as frightening as the killer boy.  I finally had to stop reading.  Eighteen is truly the new eight.

Does anyone know what I could use to fake a prison uniform? I would just get one, except that I can only find them in sizes ten times too large.

A real prison uniform is blue jeans and a blue work shirt with a white t-shirt under it. A jail uniform is the striped or orange jump suit you are used to seeing

We went to see Miss Saigon last night.  The new Scaled down production does not help it!  The Computer generated Chopper film works well but little else does.  20 years on and the flaws of the show seem more evident.

I was not loving repeating and so many of the melodies are!

Bui Doi is still the best moment in the show. It was difficult to feel for the characters as their voices did not display the warmth and vulerability of the Original London cast.  Strident and loud does not do it for me!

So often the chord progression (OK I have no idea what I'm talking about) did make you think Jean Valjean or Javert would arrive on the scene.

DR MISSKAREN - black marker on the leg is messy and not always effective.

You, too, can create the look of REAL seamed stockings.  Buy a pair of pantyhose (The Dollar Store kind will do) - iron the seam line.  Using a ball point needle and a zigzag stitch - make your own SEAMS!!!  Instant period stockings!!

And it really really works.  I didn't believe it either, but now anytime we do a period show requiring seamed stockings - all of our actresses (and some of our actors) can have them for a reasonable price!!

The other has the incredible "Bagdad Cafe"....I just LOVE this movie.

I love "Bagdad Cafe," also!  I caught it on one of the cable channels last year and thought that I would only watch a few minutes of it...it wasn't until the end of the movie that I remembered that I wasn't expecting to watch the whole thing. :)

AMERICAN IDOL tonight:

My three favorite performances were Melinda, Phil (!), and Jordin, in that order.

Blake had a beautiful tone to his voice, but those falsetto notes were hit or miss for me. LaKisha also had pitch problems in the upper registers of her song. Chris Richardson's song was OK but nothing more.

Sanjaya was so horrible it defies description. And as he goes farther and farther into the contest and has started believing his publicity about his being an "entertainer," he has turned cocky and ridiculous. That outfit was silly looking (would pre-teens find that adorable?) But the singing, trying to do melisma with simply no ability to do so was PAINFUL to sit through. Ghastly is the only way to describe it.

I'm confused and intrigued.  When MBarnum wrote. "I will certainly be wanting to eat some Indian while I am in NY!" - I assumed he was fully aware of his own entendre, double, single or otherwise, and thought it was quite amusing.

Maybe there are more important things to be wodnering about, but this fascinates me for some reason.

Thank you all for your vibes last night and today! It means so much to me and to everyone in the area dealing with this. Today was a good enough day, less scary because there wasn't as much of a shock factor, but much more sad because identites were finally released, and many people realized that they did in fact know someone who was injured, or worse. The university had a moment of silence to pay our respects to Tech, and at 9pm, there was a candlelight vigil that over half of the student body attended on one of the campus lawns. It's just so sad, and it's going to be a while before anyone feels completely at peace with the situation.

But, life goes on, and the living must keep doing as such, so that's what I've been doing. I'm so happy that I'm a musician, and that I get the pleasure of singing myself to death every day. Music is such a positive release of energy, and at the end of all of my rehearsals today, I couldn't help but feel so blessed to be able to spend my life doing this. My Chorale is performing a version of U2's "MLK" this weekend, and it now has much more significance, and I can't wait to live that experience.

In other positive news, I auditioned for the top choral ensemble on campus last night, The Madison Singers of JMU, and I got a callback! The director told me I had one of the best auditions he's seen in a while, and that he was really excited to hear my callback. I'm so happy!

I've read through most of the posts, and I'm glad to hear that everyone is doing well. This week is going to be crazy for me (comme normale), as I have a choir concert tomorrow night, opera scene performances Thursday night, a speech presentation for my Communications class on Friday that's worth 60% of my grade, and a recital on Saturday in which I am performing 3 separate times. I hate to be a mushy "life is wonderful" type, but I really am grateful that I get to do all of this during the week...the current situation just makes me appreciate everything so much more!

What genius did TNT get to do the CLOSER teasers for next season (with the "Ain't no sunshine when she's gone" soundtrack)

When the head of TNT Originals on-air gets an "idea" and wants to "play", she gives herself a budget to do a big expensive image shoot like that and will turn out a spot or two a season, to the annoyance of my other two producers who do every other Closer spot and crank out stuff on a daily basis.

My producers come up with terrific ideas that get shot down, and then the dept. head submits her spots for awards. Kind of unfair to the guys doing most of the work, but what can you do? We have to stick to a "format" and aren't allowed to venture far from the designated formula.

Anyway, she's a friend of mine so I will pass on your compliments!

Good Evening!

Well...  I got on the train at the 125th/Harlem Station.  Unfortunately, it was the wrong train.  I didn't realize there were two New Haven line trains a minute apart from each other.  Alas, the one I boarded was an "express" that did not stop at Westport.  So... I got off the train at Bridgeport, and then waited 45 minutes for train back to Westport - which was only 10 minutes away.  Fortunately, I had wanted to get to the theatre early, so I took an "earlier" train.  If I had taken the "later" train, I would not have made it to the theatre on time.  As it was, I arrived a few minutes just past the half hour call.

Whew!

DR Cason - As for sheet music, there are some great online sources now - and they're all legal.

www.sheetmusicdirect.com

www.musicnotes.com

www.freehandmusic.com

*Each site/company has their own "delivery" method, so be sure to read the system requirements to make sure they're compatible with your system.

**And best of all, depending on the format, you should be able to transpose the songs too to your key.

What the heck was up with that out of tune(!!!!!!!) violin?!?!?!?!  And why didn't the judges say anything about it when they were critiquing Chris R.?  You could tell he was trying to match his pitch to the violin... then he wasn't... then he was again...  :-\

Okay, so it wasn't just me!  I was dusting while I had AI on in the back, but the violin was just enough out of tune for me to kind of stop and stare at the TV for a second...

Can you imagine how OLD that makes me feel?

If you wore your 5000 Fingers beanie to work they'd know you were young at heart!

The young producers I work with at Turner often tell me they studied this film in college, either in Film History, African-American or Women's Studies. Can you imagine how OLD that makes me feel? Creeeeeaaaaakkk!

And it was chosen for the Library of Congress' National Film Registry. Creeeeeeaaaaaakkk!

You are not a day past 20!

It is a wonderful honor to have others study your work. Congrats!

I was just checking to see on here first - but I'll most likely make a trip to the library tomorrow or Thursday if need be.  :)

Hi DR dear Cason.... someone may have already mentioned this... but one of the best resources that I used to use alot when I lived in Hollywood, was the public library on (and I'm not sure anymore) but Ivar, or one of those small "north-south" streets, south of Hollywood Blvd., maybe around Selma.  It's the "Hollywood branch" of the library.  And they always had a wonderfully complete section of full conductor scores of shows from the 20s and 30s, up through (when I was there) the 60s.

Well, this doesn't happen often, but at this moment I'm actually in the Living Room by myself.....

yep, Ivar between Hollywood and Sunset, they have a good theater section, larger than LACC's.

ND no longer has mountains, the mountain removal project was finished years ago in ND...

I'm confused and intrigued.  When MBarnum wrote. "I will certainly be wanting to eat some Indian while I am in NY!" - I assumed he was fully aware of his own entendre, double, single or otherwise, and thought it was quite amusing.

But some of the subsequent comments seem to react to it as if MBarnum didn't intend the joke.

Maybe there are more important things to be wodnering about, but this fascinates me for some reason.

For me to have taken it as "intentional," it would have had to be posted by one of our more -- how should I say -- "extroverted" forum members.

It seem to me to be "in character" for it to have been intentional on MBarnum's part, IMO.  I could, of course, be wrong, but I have never known him to express himself in that manner on the forum.  And he was responding to another post in which the "other" little/mini-Indias were described as being "restaurant-oriented"....thus, eating "Indian" meant food....

I'd be very much surprised if he intended it as a double-entendre.  I could be wrong.  But it would seem out of character to me.   Not like the "in character" pouncing upon it as I did.  (He-he-he!)

So, Ms. Patti....a number of folks jumped on the advice bandwagon on your behalf this morning.

Did you make any decisions about the prison outfit?  Did you "do your scene" even though you didn't want to?
