Well, you've read the notes, the notes had some residual residue, and now it is time for you to post until the cheddar Chex Cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: GUTTLE!
-
Welcome twelve GUESTS. Who are you people? I'm the only one in the jernt - why don't one of you come out of the woodwork (in can't be too pleasant to be in the woodwork) and join me.
-
Last night, I did my tax return. Did I actually actually mail it or e-file it?? No (long story :P). So here's my question (mainly for Fred): If I'm expecting a refund (and I am...assuming I figured it all correctly), is there a great penalty (or one at all) if the tax return is mailed one day late? ::)
-
In my mailbox yesterday, I received a 2-track CD from Tomovoz! Thanks, Tom! It was totally unexpected. :)
-
And the word of the day is: GUTTLE!
As in Adam...the composer of The Light In the Piazza?
;)
-
I have just woken up, in the middle of the night, from a very unusual dream.
It was a musical about Gertrude. They were singing "Gertie is Back!" But I'm still not sure if they were singing about Gertrude Lawrence or Gertrude Stein.
The star of the musical was Lee J. Cobb, in full kit. Chiffon, sequins and everything.
His co-star was Lucille Ball. If it was Lawrence, she was supposed to be all the men in Gertie's life. If Stein, all the women.
And the whole thing was set on a gigantic battleship, painted white.
And then, Fletcher gave me a really hard kick, and I woke up.
I'm not sure if that was a bad thing or a good one. But I've got to get back to sleep.
This is one of those things that simply cannot be made up. Sorry.

Just what the Doctor ordered George.

Wednesday morning greetings! Off to work again today, before having 5 days off. Restful, you ask?
No-o-o-o.
After taking DH Richard tomorrow for his first physical therapy appointment, I'll drive to Tiffin, OH, for the AAUW/Ohio conference and convention Friday and Saturday. As program VP for AAUW/Ohio, I've been working with the local folks since last September to plan this event. Pray for Rosemary's baby.
-
Time to listen to "Loving Repeating" S Woody and then to watch "Star" again.
I think Gertrude was the name of the Duck in "Journey To The Centre Of The Earth" (if that helps!)
-
Hope your day goes well DR Ginny. "Event vibes" and also good vibes for your DH.
-
Good morning to DRs Edisauras and Ginny.
-
and Hello to Ben.
Which reminds me - I need to write to Ant!
-
Good Morning to Tom, Amy and Ginny!
-
Yes, Tom, Anthony has been taken by this Australian actor. Any information will be appreciated.
-
Good Morning, Tom!
Since SWoodyWhite has returned to his fitful doze, I will channel him:
The pelican proceeded to GUTTLE fish down his GULLET while watching the little TUGLET tow the tiny white battleship into harbor after it had recovered the precious contents of the sGUTTLEd Smithsonian cargo ship, which included a TUT LEG!
-
Good Morning, Ben. Have you done "the obvious" yet?
-
Ben, I have shown many of my friends Ant's miniatures. They think that his work should be in a museum! I particularly liked my mom's comment since it sounds like she's from another country:
"How very awesome is his hobby, quite a work of art and imagination of ideas he used. What wonderful detail, and much patience to work in miniatures".
Has he ever posted his pictures to HHW? They are really amazing!
-
Yes, Tom, Anthony has been taken by this Australian actor. Any information will be appreciated.
We must band together to rescue Anthony!
-
I've been trying to get Ben and Ant. to visit OZ - this was not part of the plan.
-
Is Clownnapping a Federal or State offence?
-
I think it would be offensive to Ben!
-
Good morning, DRs Tom, Edi, and Ben!
-
Tom, how many DR's have visited you in OZ? It seems like quite a few have made it over there...
-
The Australian Center for the Moving Image in Melbourne has asked for a copy of our film but hasn't scheduled it yet. But if it does (and if I win the lottery) I will come to visit you, Colin, and your breathtaking birds! I would love to see your record/CD collection...it must take up several rooms!
-
Only Jose Piano has made it!
On the other hand DP Colin and I have met about 16 HHW - present and past in North America plus François in Paris and in the UK ex HHW from the very early days - Allan
-
You would be most welcome DR Edisauras.
-
It's bedtime in the Land of Priscilla and Dame Edna.
Goodnight North America. Good morning.
I did hear from DR JMK today. He really is very busy with work and family.
-
Running late - see y'all when I get to work!
-
Good Morning Ginny! How's that DH of yours? Sounds like you've got an exhausting weekend ahead of you!
-
You would be most welcome DR Edisauras.
Please have the birds "standing by" for me! ;D
-
And one for Macaw!
-
I have the day off, but it's not going to be a real day off, as I have more to do today than I would if I were working. See y'all later!
-
New film, Waitress, an ode to a deep and true love of pie.

Apparently the new production of 110 in the Shade with Audra will be recorded.
-
DR JoseSPiano -
Yeesh. That was too close for comfort. :P Glad you got there [just] in time, and that you had a good show, and that you're feeing a bit better. :) But seriously, why didn't you call me from the train? I'd have happily served as Jose's taxi service... 8)
-
Good Morning!
I'm up, I'm up... And I slept rather well... However... I've already taken my morning Prilosec, and had my breakfast (yogurt and granola).
-
Is Clownnapping a Federal or State offence?
Well, in some circles that would actually be considered a Public Service.
<ba-doom chick>
:P

Trust me, DR singdaw, the thought did cross my mind. I think I was just a bit shocked and dumb-founded that I had done such a thing - and according to the schedules, that should have been the train to Westport. Alas, I also felt a bit foolish for doing such a thing. However, if it turned out the next train back would not have gotten me to the theatre in time, trust me, calls would have been made.
*There just also seemed to be a lot of traffic last night on the highway - at least what I could see from the train, so if I would have called anyone, it would have been the company manager. I think. In any case, I made it.
-
Apparently the new production of 110 in the Shade with Audra will be recorded.
And, apparently, the first couple rows of the audience get soaked too.
-
Catching up from yesterday...
DR elmore - As for the possibility of staying up in Westport last night, Belgian waffles weren't a part of that possible decision. -Although, I will admit that the thought did cross my mind. I was just coming up with a contingency plan in case I started feeling sick again after the show, that's all. Besides, with the acid reflux I'm dealing with, I don't Belgian Waffles would help matters. :(
-
As for Ask BK Day - Continuing my theme, as it were, from last week...
If you could ask any of the following people a question about a particular show, production number, etc., what would it be (and why)?
Morton Da Costa
Gower Champion
Michael Bennett
Harold Prince
-
And, yes, I did not have any chocolate yesterday.
:-\
-
...And there's been a strange-but-good side effect from the GERD... With all the coughing and hacking (sorry to be so graphic) I've been dealing with over the past couple of days, my abs are feeling toned and taught. -A little sore too, but still... even my jeans are fitting better. ;)
-
...And with my modified diet due to the acid reflux, it's also provided with an excuse/reason to get back to eating healthier too.
However, that does not mean I can't buy Levain cookies for other people. ;)
-
Well, time for me to get ready. I don't have to leave the apartment until 10:30, but I just don't want to find myself rushing to get out of here later. So, I shall ready myself now.
Laters...

I'm willing to lay odds bet that this will wind up on PBS, too.

More Belchin' than Belgian?

Wednesday vibes for DR GINNY...with 5 days of vibes to follow.
-
Just bought a few more items from MR BK's garage sale. Couldn't resist some of the titles.
It is very annoying when something like the seating brouhaha occurs because somebody "just thought of it" - and other people who paid the same money are suddenly traveling second class. SOMEBODY should be given a talking to.

Thanks for sharing. :)

DR SWW - The Dream-O-Matic 6000 says that you have divided your life into equal parts of comedy and drama and that you feel "onstage" a lot or at least in "performance" mode.

DR SINGDAW everyone of those gals would have been fired for having their hair down - and in the food!
And the girl in the center would be prettier if she didn't have her apron up under her teles. 8)

Good morning, all!
DR Jose, I'm sorry about the acid reflux. It gives me grief as well. I did finaly make my first visit to Levain ysterday. The cinnamin butter brioche is quite tasty.
Today: post office and the NYPL theatre collection.
I had to delete what I originally posted. Turns out I had poor info here.

DR DakotaCelt - Sorry to hear about your experience on campus yesterday...as if people weren't on edge enough already! :-\
-
George - As far as the IRS goes - absent something like fraud or substantial understatement of income, penalties are generally only assesssed on a balance due with the return, that is, only if you owe money.
The sticky point (which I'm sure doesn't relate to your presumably simple straightforward return) is that if there's ever an audit and you end up owing money after that audit, there's always a possibility that the IRS could say your return was late to begin with and assess penalties on the balance due - though I can't imagine they'd do that type of after-audit late filing penalty for only one day late. :) So it's always best to put in for that extension before the due date just in case.
-
PAHKEEZAH is the film that introduced Bollywood to me.
It's star Meena Kamuri is my favorite Bollywood actress.
Here is my favorite song from the movie:

DR Edisaurus: My copy of The Internationale has shipped! :)
Thanks for supporting us, DR Singdaw. Soon you will have a new song to sing!
BTW, I saw new copies of THE INTERNATIONALE at Amoeba in LA and thought "We've arrived!"
-
Off for heavy yard work, my "pulloutese" weeding workout!
-
Meena starred in many films, several of them directed by her husband.
They divorced in the middle of shooting PAHKEEZAH in 1964 and shooting was suspended. About six years later, when her EX needed money, they replaced the leading man and finished the movie. In the intervening years, Meena had taken to drink, and it's a bit like watching Monty Clift in RAINTREE COUNTY and seeing scenes before and after the accident.
PAHKEEZAH was released in February, 1972, to lukewarm box office and review. Meena passed away on March 31, 1972 - and the film exploded at the box office becoming one of India's biggest hits....
-
Edi, yes, the obvious has been done. It was done about two hours ago.

"Doing the obvious"...is that like "visiting the necessary"?

It's bedtime in the Land of Priscilla and Dame Edna.
Goodnight North America. Good morning.
I did hear from DR JMK today. He really is very busy with work and family.
"Land of Priscilla" I like the sound of that ;)
-
I'm glad you (and the others) enjoy Anthony's miniatures. When he was working on the house with gusto a few years ago he tried to put together a television show or segment for one of the home DIY shows. It's very, very, very difficult to do that, especially on limited funds. Obiviously, it didn't happen but the process was fun.
Yes, I have posted some shots of the house here on HHW.
-
"Doing the obvious"...is that like "visiting the necessary"?
It could be since it is necessary to wash out the old oatmeal bowl every morning :)
-
And, yes, I did not have any chocolate yesterday.

Why does this post make me think "Yes, we have no bananas"
-
"Doing the obvious"...is that like "visiting the necessary"?
I usually do the oblivious.

"Doing the Obvious" - isn't that a song from ME AND MY GAL?
Off to buy doggie food for Miss Blue....

it is necessary to wash out the old oatmeal bowl every morning
And, sooner rather than later. Once it has started to dry and harden, it's tough going!

Thanks to all for the conference/convention vibes - here's the website:
AAUW/Ohio Equity Conference & Convention (http://www.aauwoh.org/Convention/Convention2007Main.htm)
Thanks, too, for the inquiries about DH Richard. He's progressing nicely and, I think, ready to get into the physical therapy routine. While I have some apprehensions about leaving him alone for a few days, he wasn't amused when I offered to import his mother or mine to look after him while I'm gone.

Good Morning, once again...
Well, I have a few more things to pack up here, and then it's off to the Metro-North Station.
DR elmore - Yes, that cinnamon-butter brioche is quite divoon. And the brioche with chocolate chips - c'est formidable. Although, the little sourdough rolls with the chunks of Valrhona chocolate are a nice knosh too. :)

All I have to say is YEAH!. I am so happy clyde got voted out. He was really kept in by his fans way too long. I am mixed about billy ray and john not being in the bottom 2. I really dislike john. But he did do quite well for his abilities. And I really like billy ray and karina. And he had improved so much the week before. But really sucked this week. I really hope he does better next week. It's hard because i like them so much. But i don't really believe in having someone's fanbase keep you in if you are bad.
As for heather, i was not surprised she was in the bottom 2. I tried to call a few of the numbers on monday. And they were all busy (well the ones i tried, not john or clyde of course) except hers. I thought she has done so well in the past. BUt not as good this week. But i'm glad she will stay. Especially since there are only 2 female celebs left.

DR MattH, at the last minute BOSTON LEGAL was not shown last night.
Well, that's a bummer! I guess another WILD WILD WEST episode will go in its place this afternoon.
-
Good morning!
We've got white sky syndrome here this morning, and the forecast calls for some showers tonight. Boo! After a weekend of rain, I'm tired of it.
-
I knew I was going to have time this afternoon for TV shows on the DVR and a complete film, so I went to the to-watch shelf and was surprised to find a Fox Noir that had somehow not gotten watched yet - WHERE THE SIDEWALK ENDS. I will certainly be able to get to it today, and I'm looking forward to it.
-
A lot of reruns on TV tonight.
Of course, Fox has replaced that new episode of BONES with a rerun from earlier this season (the one with Brennan and Dr. Hodgens buried alive).
MEDIUM and CSI: NY are both repeats tonight.
So, basically I have the IDOL results show (recorded), CROSSING JORDAN, and LOST.

WHERE THE SIDEWALK ENDS
Also the title of a wonderful book of children's poetry by the late Shel Silverstein.

LAKE WORTH
To answer your question from yesterday. Yes I do live near lake worth. It is two cities (or so) north of me off the I95 about 15-20 minutes on good traffic day.
There is also a small independent movie theater in the Fort Lauderdale area called Cinema Paradiso. www.cinemaparadiso.org
503 SE 6th St
Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301
(954) 525-3456
Also another one that often shows independent and gay themed films called The Gateway in Fort Lauderdale (Sunrise Blvd at Hwy 1) Owned by the Sunrise Theater Chain www.sunrisecinemas.com who also own six other multi-plex cinema houses.

There are a lot of other posters here who are a lot more man hungry than Adriana.

Ok, maybe I'm crazy, but I found out I am getting me the "complex cases", in other words child porn and cases the other lawyer doesn't want, because I'm "so good at working them out" Oh please. Like I'm going to spend my time and energy and deal with what you have to deal with emotionally to investigate this crap and then leave before the case is over so someone else can come in and screw up everything I did.
Guess again. I am thinking about leaving a month earlier.

End of rant...now I remember why I'm leaving....

I watch AI for the first time this year.
OI VEY!
The ones that I watched most were bad and were rightfully criticized by the panel.
The only one that was good that I saw was (Eliza) Dolittle. Who's first name I don't recall.
What a train wreck this show is. How is it that this show is so popular.
-
Off to a lunchtime meeting at the YWCA.
Bye for now!

The only one that was good that I saw was (Eliza) Dolittle. Who's first name I don't recall.
What a train wreck this show is. How is it that this show is so popular.
Her first name is Melinda and she is a phenomenal singer.
The show maintains its popularity because America loves a contest, and that's what this show is, first and foremost, and in the grand tradition of such other talent shows as Ted Mack's Original Amateur Hour and Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts, you get the good with the bad.
-
Guess again. I am thinking about leaving a month earlier.
Yes!! No more of that crap when you're your own boss! :)
-
Yes!! No more of that crap when you're your own boss! :)
Yeah. I talked to my brother and I'm thinking just leaving 2 weeks earlier, July 6th instead of July 20 would make a world of difference. It was my original plan that I changed for some reason. Now I think I'll change it back
-
Guess I'll head down now to check the mail and do some odd jobs around the house before starting to prepare lunch.
I cleaned the den this morning, so that little chore is already completed! Hooray!

DR CILLA LIZ - you have Tyra Mail.

Reported elsewhere on the net:
Jamie Bell, the child star who shot to fame in film Billy Elliott, will be the next young actor to appear in Equus, replacing Daniel Radcliffe. Digitalspy.com reports: "Jamie is really excited about taking over and isn’t at all daunted about stripping off."

This is kind of fun!
Howard Kissel, reporting on the recording session for the Encores! Face the Music:
Monday the cast of the City Center Encores! concert revival of Irving Berlin's 1932 "Face the Music" recorded the score -- probably best known for the standard "Let's Have Another Cup of Coffee" -- in a studio on the far West Side.
Maestro Rob Fisher, who did as exhilarating a job with the New York Philharmonic on "My Fair Lady" last month as he did with "Face the Music" a few weeks ago, was again on the podium.
...The most interesting moment in the session came when a dispute arose over a lyric in the song "Manhattan Madness," which was hauntingly sung by Jeffrey Denham. Denham had been singing "Traffic that stops and goes without knowing/ What all the shooting's for," an entirely logical sequence of words that was in the score transcribed from the Library of Congress.
Someone, however, noticed that in the collection of Berlin lyrics edited by Robert Kimball, a musical theater scholar of impeccable thoroughness, the line reads, "Traffic that stops and goes without knowing/ What's all the shootings for."
Much Talmudic wrangling ensued, but the issue was resolved by something that could not have been used even a few years ago -- YouTube.
In researching his role, Denham had come across a clip from a '30s movie ("Strictly Dynamite," starring Jimmy Durante and Lupe Velez) in which "Manhattan Madness" is sung in the background during a nightclub scene. The YouTube clip was summoned up on one of the half-dozen computers used in the session.
Presumably Berlin exerted tight control over the use of his material at the height of his career. Although it's a little hard to hear under the dialogue, the movie clearly supports the Kimball reading. So, if it sounds odd when you get the album later this spring, you should know it's entirely authentic.

In the ongoing media assault over the Va. Tech gunman, I heard on the radio this a.m. that he represents a problem of growing proportions among the youth of today.
The caller (Stephanie Miller Show) wasn't as lucid as he might have been, but he had strong opinions that youth are increasingly self-absorbed, lack maturity (as in "out-of-touch with how to deal with emotional issues"), and the like. Why he never recognized these issues among past generations of youths I have no idea.
I think history is rampant with examples of self-absorption and the emotionally detached. That's the hallmark of a sociopath.
I'm wondering if, despite the fact that this gunman moved here as a toddler, there weren't some serious cultural clashes in his life. Asian cultures, upon arrival in the U.S., adamantly cling to their cultural values. Sometimes it takes a few generations for the families to be "Americanized", and even then traditions still have a strong grasp on their views.
I'm not saying that's a bad thing, either. It's just an observation. But for this young man, it will be interesting to learn what his home life was. He seemed to have some rather evangelical attitudes about the "way of life" his fellow students maintained.
At any rate...
-
As for Ask BK Day - Continuing my theme, as it were, from last week...
If you could ask any of the following people a question about a particular show, production number, etc., what would it be (and why)?
Morton Da Costa
Gower Champion
Michael Bennett
Harold Prince
Da Costa - at what point did Mr. Willson and you decide that Rock Island Line would work better without music - and what was the reaction the first time it was performed that way out of town?
Gower - What was the reaction like the first time Hello, Dolly was performed in front of an audience?
Michael Bennett - Was the idea of the mirror number, Who's That Woman? yours or Sondheim's or Goldman's or Prince's?
Hal Prince - Why, when a show is out of town, do you leave and not come back until the end of the run, as happened with Bounce in Chicago?
-
TOD:
bk, I asked a few days ago, but you may have missed it: what is the difference between a "view" and a "hit" on HHW, for statistical purposes?
A view, as I understand it as relates to this message board, is each time someone looks at a page of whatever daily discussion they're in - it includes people who reload the pages, and/or lurkers who just go page to page.
A hit is each time someone goes somewhere on the site. We get millions a year.
-
I must go and prepare quite a few packages for shipping. I did a major Kritzerland e-blast with the two lists - in retrospect, I shouldn't have taken the first batch of boxes back quite yet as I only kept five copies of each CD from that batch and I'm close to being out on at least ten titles - I'll either stop there, or have to go rifle through boxes again.
-
My question for ASK BK day:
What song that you haven't recorded yourself would be the opening track on your CD?
What music would you choose for walk-in music at a public function (in all the old movies, when someone walked into a nightclub, the orchestra always struck up some theme song associated with said someone - while Ann Miller was changing her shoes.)
-
"Dancing With the Stars" observations:
Billy Ray "Achy Breaky Heart" Cyrus has NO personal sense of rhythm. And that lavender satin shirt, DESPITE the hot studio lights, apparently wreaks havoc upon his nipples.
I still maintain it's unmanly for any male to do shoulder shimmies. I cringe.
Ian Ziering seems to have REALLY toned up during the show's short duration. He seemed a bit bloated/out of shape when the competition began...now he looks as if he was trained by Sylvester Stallone a la John Travolta for "Staying Alive."
Ian Ziering really needs to watch his body language. He's not too far off the mark of nelliness established by Joey Lawrence in his final appearance on last season's competition (the "sailor suit" dance that lowered testosterone levels to dangerous levels in all who watched it -- including lesbians).

The price of popularity! And low prices! 8)

"Dancing With the Stars" observations:
Billy Ray "Achy Breaky Heart" Cyrus has NO personal sense of rhythm. And that lavendar satin shirt, DESPITE the hot studio lights, apparently wreaks havoc upon his nipples.
He's not too far off the mark of nelliness established by Joey Lawrence in his final appearance on last season's competition (the "sailor suit" dance that lowered testosterone levels to dangerous levels in all who watched it).
Blame the choreographer....it's easier that way. Sometimes the gap between vision and execution is enormous!
-
I blame Jose.
-
The choreographer OR JOSE....yes....
Shi-Poopi!!
-
And the word of the day is: GUTTLE!
After midwesterner Jerry Ryan left her, Gittel Mosca found solace in gorging herself on bagels, doughnuts and macaroons. Lawyers come and lawyers go, but a good GUTTLE is hard to find.
-
Welcome, new D[ear]R[eader] BrettySpaghetti! :):):)
-
Don't mind all the unseemliness...we're actually quite nice!
-
Newbie here.
Dunno how this all works yet, but happy to be registered.
Hi, Amy.
Hi, Bruce.
Brett
-
And, apparently, the first couple rows of the audience get soaked too.
Soaked, or sloshed?
Just asking.
-
Dunno how this all works yet
It doesn't work at all; we're completely dysfunctional. ;)
-
Welcome to the whole shebang, BrettySpaghetti!
-
Welcome to brand spanking new DR BrettySpaghetti!
-
Welcome to new DR (Dear Reader) BrettySpaghetti! We are glad you decided to jump in and join us!
-
This morning I went for a walk, but my camera did not work. So I cannot show you a photo of the cormorants or the roadrunner or the oriole that I didn't take.
-
So, tell us about yourself, DR BrettySpaghetti. Where are you posting from?
-
brand spanking new
As fresh and sparkling as a gazelle with a wax job!
-
Love the name, BRETTYSPAGHETTI!
Welcome!
Have you read the books yet? :)
-
Could it be Gertrude Berg?
Nah. Too much sequins and chiffon. But Lee J. Cobb looked absolutely faa-bu!
-
SINGDAW,
Do you ever post reviews on Amazon?
-
No, DR Jeanne, I never have. But I suppose that now, I'll have to!!!
Not that anyone here would twist my arm or anything! ;)
-
DR SWW - Bizarro dream!?!?!?
Was it in color, or black and white?
Thanks for sharing. :)
Most of this dream was in black and white, except for Lucy's lipstick.
Usually I dream in color, so this was unusual.
I have no idea why Lee's lipstick wasn't in color.
-
Welcome to the insanity, Brett.
-
we're actually quite nice!
Speak for yourself, my dear. (Haven't I told you that before? :) )
-
I have no idea why Lee's lipstick wasn't in color.
Possibly because he was never especially "colorful" (in a fashion sense) in his film roles?
-

Lucy probably had it in her contract, so as not to be upstaged.

No, DR Jeanne, I never have. But I suppose that now, I'll have to!!!
Not that anyone here would twist my arm or anything! ;)
Aside from the obvious REQUIREMENT of HHW Godhood, I just thought you'd have some interesting things to say. You know a lot about music, for instance, yes?
-
Speak for yourself, my dear. (Haven't I told you that before?)
IIRC... Yes!!! ;)

Most of this dream was in black and white, except for Lucy's lipstick.

Where's that JRAND and his DREAM-0-MATIC? WHY are some things in dreams in COLOR???
-
You know a lot about music, for instance, yes?
Well...
I don't know if I'd claim that, given the eminent personages here at HHW...
But I have been taking a few notes on bk's trilogy as I've gone along, with the idea that at some point I might post a few musings.
-
Well...
I don't know if I'd claim that, given the eminent personages here at HHW...
Don't let that scare you. God only knows who some of these folks are! You notice they don't tell us their real names!
-
But I have been taking a few notes on bk's trilogy as I've gone along, with the idea that at some point I might post a few musings.
Oh, do! Do!
Then...never mind.
-
God only knows who some of these folks are! You notice they don't tell us their real names!
That's to protect the innocent. ::)
What happens at HHW stays at HHW.
-
Don't let that scare you. God only knows who some of these folks are! You notice they don't tell us their real names!
I beg your pardon!
Harrumph!
:D
-
What happens at HHW stays at HHW.
Hee-hee-e-e-e-e-e-e...!!!
-
Don't keep quiet, BRETTYSPAGHETTI!
We want to hear from you!
-
Don't let that scare you. God only knows who some of these folks are! You notice they don't tell us their real names!
Oh...THOSE folks....like "SINGDAW" for instance?
Or have you unmasked his true identity?
:)
-
What happens at HHW stays at HHW.
WHO TOLD YOU THAT???!!!
Oh, dear. I think SINGDAW'S in big trouble!
-
WHO TOLD YOU THAT???!!!
Oh, dear. I think SINGDAW'S in big trouble!
If you modify that to "singdaw IS big trouble", you'd be onto somethin'!
:D
-
Oh, do! Do! Then...
So do, do, do, like you've done, done, done, before.

Or have you unmasked his true identity?
:)
I know that he's a quiet, unassuming office worker--who has a wild and wooly side. Yes?
-
Reported elsewhere on the net:
Jamie Bell, the child star who shot to fame in film Billy Elliott, will be the next young actor to appear in Equus, replacing Daniel Radcliffe. Digitalspy.com reports: "Jamie is really excited about taking over and isn’t at all daunted about stripping off."
So, will appearing in Equus be mandatory for all male former child stars?
I can see it with Kurt Russell, but I draw the line at Mickey Rooney.
-
DR Ginny, glad to hear your hubby is mending well. Do you get to have to go back to see Dr. Hunk the surgeon again?
Yes, DR MBarnum, next Thursday at 8:40am EDT.
-
If you modify that to "singdaw IS big trouble", you'd be onto somethin'!
I would say, "I resemble that remark," but some DR used that yesterday. :-\
-
I know that he's a quiet, unassuming office worker--who has a wild and wooly side. Yes?
Wooly. Yes, definitely wooly. ;)
-
Do we know that DR RON PULLIAM is REALLY Ron Pulliam?
The other day DR FRANCOIS was telling me that I am really DR JANE.
But I'm not! I'M JEANNE!
-
Yes, DR MBarnum, next Thursday at 8:40am EDT.
I think DR MBarnum would like to inspect Dr. Hunk's bedside manner for himself.
-
So who is getting voted off of IDOL tonight?
I would speculate that sanjaya and chris would be in the bottom. I would have thought phil would have been there too. But his performance last night seems to have made him popular again.
Hopefully sanjaya will go.
-
Do we know that DR RON PULLIAM is REALLY Ron Pulliam? The other day DR FRANCOIS was telling me that I am really DR JANE. But I'm not! I'M JEANNE!
How very true, DR Jeanne.
For instance, no one has pointed out that an anagram for RON PULLIAM is:
I AM NO PLURL
So what can we really believe?
-
It looks like DR JoseSPiano made it for his half hour call.
-
DR newbie BrettySpaghetti has departed after one post.
Following DR EverLovinHeather before him.
Should we take this personally? :-\
-
Good Afternoon!
Yes, indeed, I made it up to Westport in plenty of time. I even had a lovely bowl of soup from Organic Market next door. Chicken Vegetable. Yum!
-
...And even though I sort of like the cold temperatures, the fact that I'm still wearing my winter coat in mid-April is most unseemly.
-
Welcome, new DR BrettySpaghetti!!!
Tell us about yourself!
-
OK... Just got the five minute call...
Laters...
-
And, since you're still logged in at 5 minutes to show time, may we expect that you'll be multi-tasking [posting and playing] during the show?
-
Aside from the obvious REQUIREMENT of HHW Godhood, I just thought you'd have some interesting things to say. You know a lot about music, for instance, yes?
Huh?
I've been a god here for ages, and I've never posted a review at Amazon.

A better anagram would be ALL I RUMP ON.
Whatever that means.

Made from real chicken organs.

Just about time for me to head in to work.
It was originally supposed to be a day off, but one of my fellow cashiers has called out.
Laters, as our fave keyboardist would say.
-
So, tell us about yourself, DR BrettySpaghetti. Where are you posting from?
I'm at work in Beverly Hills. I work for Larry Flynt, but edit one of his two remaining "mainstream" interests, a powerboating magazine.
I am a huge fan of musical theater, but was tragically born heterosexual.
I became a BK fan when I discovered the Lost in Boston and Unsung Musicals series. It really deepened my appreciation of the musicals I love by hearing the great songs that got cut.
I love to discover new (to me) OCRs -- this week, I'm listening to Wonderful Town; recently I heard (and then saw) Honk. Next, I'm looking forward to hearing Fiorello, Is There Life After High School? and The Baker's Wife.
My favorite scores include Fiddler, Zorba, Oklahoma, Chess, Joseph, Music Man, West Side Story, Song & Dance, Flower Drum Song, Avenue Q, Wicked, Pippin and Godspell.
And my triumvirate of favorite "underappreciated" scores: Doonesbury, Romance/Romance, and Jeeves -- the original, not the redo. That may be my favorite music ever!
Brett

Welcome BrettySpaghetti - glad you found us and welcome to our merry troupe.

Cool, DR BrettySpaghetti 8)! And once again, welcome.
Romance/Romance was recently revived here at the Paper Mill Playhouse in NJ, and got some fine notices.

I have finished packaging up too many packages and I think I'll go ship them now and then begin this proposal I have to write.

I can see it with Kurt Russell, but I draw the line at Mickey Rooney.
I was thinking of the kid who is on TWO AND A HALF MEN. I wouldn't want to play one of the horses, though...
-
Huh?
I've been a god here for ages, and I've never posted a review at Amazon.
I think it's something DR MISS KAREN and I made up recently on BK's behalf.
See? These new gods have all sorts of crazy ideas!

Ahhh! I lived in nearby Maplewood, NJ, for 10 years! Been to the ol' Paper Mill many times.

Goodness, what a weekend I had. The reunion was incredible, you could feel the energy in the room. The following day there was a smaller, more intimate gathering at a classmate’s home. I had a fantastic time. Friday night and Sunday night I had fun with my brother, nephew & nieces.
Since I returned on Monday I have been on the computer emailing with a good number of classmates, those at the reunion & some who couldn’t attend. Group emails & private ones, I’ve even received some phone calls. I think just about everyone agreed it was the best reunion.
The only downside was not having Keith with me. It was very difficult for him to be left behind.
-
A better anagram would be ALL I RUMP ON.

OMG!!! ;D ;D
-
Singdaw- How nice to return and find a face to go with the name, and a rather handsome face at that.
Bruce-Nice new avatar!!
-
DR Jane - So nice to have you back! Glad the reunion was such a success.
How did DH Keith and DD Sherlock survive without you??

The reunion was incredible, you could feel the energy in the room.
Sure it wasn't all the pacemakers?

Excellent! I've never even met anybody else who even knew about Romance/Romance. I prefer the first Romance story, especially the songs "Yes It's Love," "It's Not Too Late" and "The Little Comedy." Alison Fraser and Scott Bakula do such a great job on this!
And speaking of Alison......She was wonderful in the off-Broadway Up Against It. I bet I'm the only person here who saw that one!

I think DR elmore3003 would now make some comment about Dr. Hunk's being a little bit young for you??? ;)
DR MBarnum will just stalk him till he's the right age, somewhere between 70 and death.
-
Dear DR BrettySpaghetti,
Thank you for that wonderful introduction of yourself!
Now for the important issues:
1. What pets do you have? Names and breeds, please.
2. What do you think about Sanjaya ;)

Yes, the first story is the better of the two. I did not see Up Against It but I'm reading her bio page on her Web site. Sounds like quite a project.
I LOVED her in March of the Falsettos
And here is her Web page for those interested.

I am a huge fan of musical theater, but was tragically born heterosexual.
Welcome DR Braghetti! That's okay, us heteros aren't discriminated against here on HHW, actually embraced with love (you'll see these alot :-* and :o), and wit, and clever innuendo and double entendre (you open the door... Pounce!), and news and musings about all sorts of stuff. You'll find these HHWers very entertaining -- and rather addictive.
HHW definition number one -- DR is for Dear Reader, not doctor...(there is no HHW manual for newbies -- at least I never got a copy -- it's learn as you go along)...
-
Miss Kitty Carlisle Hart had a long and wonderful life! She will be missed but she was a treasure while she was here.

Newbie here.
Dunno how this all works yet, but happy to be registered.
Hi, Amy.
Hi, Bruce.
Brett
Welcome, Brett. DR Sandra will want to know if you like Cherry Coke and DR MBarnum will want to know if you're a body builder. If the answer to either is yes, run for your life now.

DR Jane - So nice to have you back! Glad the reunion was such a success.
How did DH Keith and DD Sherlock survive without you??
Thank you, it's good to be back.
As for Keith. It was soooo hard for him to miss our reunion. To make it more difficult, the phone company was having problems due to our new DSL service. So he finally had a fast internet connection but couldn't talk consistently on the phone.
I went to the reunion to help set up & make the flower arrangements. When I walked in and saw the juke box I remembered there were songs in there I had requested, songs that are special to Keith & me. When CHERISH came on I called Keith all weepy & missing him, only the phone wouldn’t work again. :(

Like the Antrobus family that survives one disaster after another only to
start again with renewed optimism, so goes "All About Us," John Kander and Fred Ebb's musical based on Thornton Wilder's "The Skin of Our Teeth." While this latest version of the 1942 Pulitzer Prize-winning work may be more true to the playwright's original text, a satisfying musical whole still proves elusive and -- as Sabina, the story's eternal domestic goddess would say -- remains at "sixes and sevens."
Originally called "Over and Over," which lived and died at Virginia's
Signature Theater in 1999, the show has weathered a series of revisions, workshops and title changes. If it survives this latest incarnation (the not-for-profit Westport Country Playhouse has commercial enhancement in place and transfer hopes), it will be by the skin of its teeth. A lot of work still has to be done.
The approaching Ice Age notwithstanding, Gabriel Barre's production has
trouble warming up. Indeed, this long, intermissionless version misses its musical spurs, not to mention its center. What seems most lacking is the kind of opener that might place the show in a wilder Wilder world, embracing the writer's deconstructionism and epic themes with joyous abandon. There's nothing here to prep the audience for the show's strange musical journey.
One longs for a Kander and Ebb number that would pull it all together before setting things loose in the story's crazy, loving way. Similarly absent is a closing number that's more of a wow than a wink.
Instead, what you have is a well-crafted edit of the three-act play by
theater vet Joseph Stein, with a series of numbers -- some better than
others -- mixed in with performances still searching for their characters or confidence.
As Mr. Antrobus, head of the First Family of Man, Shuler Hensley has rugged looks and gravitas but lacks the humor, heart and intellectual curiosity to lead humankind's survival. (This eternal Adam musters some enthusiasm in "The Wheel," but the song about his latest invention fails to get much traction.) As Mrs. A., Yvette Freeman variously frets, nags and nervously nurtures. Cady Huffman has potential to be a splendid Sabina, the Antrobuses' overheated dish of a maid (and civilization's femme fatale), but her character doesn't come into its own until later in the show.
You know you're in trouble when some of the most memorable numbers are performed by supporting characters or extinct animals. The Mammoths (Eric Michael Gillett and Drew Taylor) have a cozy number called "Warm." "Nice People," chillingly sung by troubled son Henry (sharply played by Carlo Alban), shows the songwriting team at its fiercest. And when after the first act, a quartet of actors (Michael Thomas Holmes, Frank Vlastnik, Michael James Leslie and Daniel Marcus) step out of their minor roles to sing the playful "The Discussion" -- about how they don't "get" what the show is all about -- you could feel the audience rise to the neat trick of the song, and the challenge.
Things improve when the musical fast-forwards to the Mammals' Convention at Atlantic City.
Looking like a sparrow who just swallowed a hawk, Eartha Kitt as Esmeralda, the Fortune Teller, brings her own brand of other-world charisma to the stage. She casts an eccentric spell in "Rain," forecasting civilization's wet doom. Mr. Antrobus may have invented the alphabet but Kitt owns all the letters as she purrs out vowels, stretches out syllables and spits out consonants with diva authority, finally giving the show some kick and surreal authenticity.
She also allows for some of the show's sharpest writing. When Sabina asks Esmeralda for her fortune, Kitt answers with a delivery than comes from eons of experience: "You're a woman and you're poor. You have no fortune."
This second part also shows off Sabina to a greater degree. Huffman rises to the occasion as a beauty contestant at the convention, scoring in a sideshow of a song called "World Peace" and in the seductive "You Owe It To Yourself," which brings out K&E's naughtiness.
However, Mrs. Antrobus' big number, "He Always Comes Home to Me," evokes a darker version of a tune from "Dance a Little Closer," a show that also tried and failed to musicalize an end-of-the-world play, "Idiot's Delight." Several other songs ("When Poppa Comes Home," "Lullaby") feel as if they should have more emotional or narrative weight, but don't.
Stein's script has some insider fun with Wilder's Fourth Wall-busting
moments, with the actors stepping out of characters as themselves ("Why can't we have musicals like we used to?" asks Cady/Sabina) as an exasperated stage manager (Tony Freeman) tries to hold the show together with pleas and firepower amid the chaos. ("Who's the Equity Deputy on this show?")
But too often the freewheeling narrative rushes at warp speed, careening from whimsical to profound without giving key moments (Mr. A.'s decision to keep the fire lit, his infidelity with Sabina, the pregnancy of daughter Gladys) their emotional or logical (even in a Wilder sense) due. The character of Gladys (Samantha Futerman) is especially sketchy.
For the musical's last section, world war emerges as the latest catastrophe, with bad seed son Henry (read Cain) heading the forces of evil and confronting his father. Amid these final conflicts, Stein merges with Wilder for some philosophical musings but the climax still is wanting. Whether it's because of Hensley's over-emotive delivery or the song itself, what should be the show's anthem of human resiliance, "The Skin of Our Teeth," fails to land effectively.
As in the play, the last word goes to Sabina who, at the end of the day,
prefers to go to the movies during a break from the ongoing apocalypse. If only there were enough on stage to compel her to stay.
Sets, James Youmans; costumes, Ann Hould-Ward; lighting, Ken Billington; sound, Brian Ronan; orchestrations, William David Brohn, Michael Gibson; production stage manager, Bess Marie Glorioso. Opened, reviewed April 14, 2007. Runs through April 28. Running time: 2 HOURS, 10 MIN.
Musical numbers: "Eat the Ice Cream," "Sabina!," "A Telegram," "We're Home," "The Wheel," "Warm," "A Whole Lot of Lovin'!," "When Poppa Comes Home," "Save the Human Race," "A Discussion, Rain," "Beauty Pageant," "World Peace," "He Always Comes to Me," "You Owe It To Yourself," "Nice People," "The Promise," "Military an," "Lullaby," "Another Telegram," "The Skin of Our Teeth," "At the Rialto."

Welcome back, Jane! Glad to hear that you had a grand time at your reunion...for the most part! ;D

A CALL TO ACTION
Time to re-evaluate U.S. Involvement
Every day there are news reports of more deaths! Why are we still there?
We see images of death and destruction on TV every night! Why are we still there?
We took this land by force. We occupied it. It causes us nothing but trouble! Why are we still there?
Many of our children go there but never come back! Why are we still there?
Murderers, Rapists, Pedophiles and Thugs enjoy celebrity status! Why are we still there?
Their government is unstable! Why are we still there?
Many of their people are uncivilized! Why are we still there?
Their land is subject to natural disasters and we are obliged to come to their aid! Why are we still there?
They have more than 1000 religious sects which we do not understand! Why are we still there?
Their cultures, foods and diverse ways of life are unfathomable to most ordinary Americans! Why are we still there?
They cannot secure their borders! Why are we still there?
They are billions of dollars in debt and it will cost billions more to rebuild! Why are we still there?
It is now quite clear.......................

WE MUST PULL OUT OF CALIFORNIA! NOW!!!

Bretty-My reunion wasn’t far from where you work, at the UCLA Faculty Center. Keith, my husband and high school classmate, went to Hamilton over on Robertson Blvd. Are you originally from the area?
-
DR Jane, I was in LA over the weekend. BK and Adriana and I had pancakes at DuPars. I'm sorry you couldn't join us.
-
I too love Romance, Romance. I wasn't able to see the Paper Mill production but I do have the CD (out of print and hard to find) and I listen often.
I don't have Doonesbury but I do have the re-do of Jeeves.
Did you (or anyone) see Romance/Romance on A&E years ago...when they did such things?? I taped it, but I don't know exactly where the tape is. I also love this show. :)
-
And speaking of Alison......She was wonderful in the off-Broadway Up Against It. I bet I'm the only person here who saw that one!
Ooooooo! Them's fightin' words! :)
[I didn't see it.]
-
For anyone who doesn't know, DR JANE and I are about the same age, so I feel I can joke with her about our age.
Jokes aside, so many of the women from my class look great. Our Penny O looked gorgeous. And no, I'm sorry. I didn't take a photo-darn.
-
DR Jane ~ Glad you had a safe trip -- and hope you still had fun even though you missed your sweetie.
-
Did you (or anyone) see Romance/Romance on A&E years ago...when they did such things?? I taped it, but I don't know exactly where the tape is. I also love this show. :)
Yes, I have it also on a dusty VHS tape somewhere. I seem to recall this production was slightly abridged? Maybe not...

Actress Kitty Carlisle Hart Dies at 96Wednesday, April 18, 2007
NEW YORK —
Kitty Carlisle Hart, whose long career spanned Broadway, opera, television and film, including the classic Marx Brothers movie "A Night at the Opera," has died at age 96, her son said Wednesday.
Christopher Hart said his mother had been in and out of the hospital since contracting pneumonia over the Christmas holidays.
"She passed away peacefully" at home, said Hart. "She had such a wonderful life, and a great long run, it was a blessing."
Hart had appeared for years on the popular game show "To Tell the Truth" as a celebrity panelist.
The entertainer was also a tireless advocate for the arts, serving 20 years on the New York State Council on the Arts. In 1991, she received the National Medal of Arts from the first President Bush.
Well known for her starring role as Rosa Castaldi in the 1935 movie "A Night at the Opera," her other film credits included: "She Loves Me Not" and "Here Is My Heart," both opposite Bing Crosby; Woody Allen's "Radio Days"; and "Six Degrees of Separation."
She began her acting career on Broadway in "Champagne Sec," and went on to appear in many other Broadway productions, including the 1984 revival of "On Your Toes."
She made her operatic debut at the Metropolitan Opera in 1967 in "Die Fledermaus," and created the role of Lucretia in the American premiere of Benjamin Britten's "Rape of Lucretia."
From 1956 to 1967, she appeared on the CBS prime-time game show "To Tell the Truth" with host Bud Collyer and fellow panelists such as Polly Bergen, Johnny Carson, Bill Cullen and Don Ameche. The show featured three contestants, all claiming to be the same person. The panelists asked them questions to determine which was telling the truth. (The popular show also had runs, sometimes including Carlisle, in daytime and in syndicated versions.)
Hart's late husband was the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Moss Hart, who wrote "You Can't Take It With You" and "The Man Who Came to Dinner" with George S. Kaufman and won a Tony for directing "My Fair Lady" on Broadway.

Kitty was a wonderful lady and a bundle of energy. She was always gracious and I liked her very much.

DR Ginny I am sorry to read of DH Richard’s surgery. Best of vibes for a complete healing.
WELCOME BrettySpaghetti! [/color] You have a nice face & I look forward to getting to know you.
Thanks George & Miss Karen.
DR Laura, I wish I had known, I might have been able to stop by for a few minutes. I hope it wasn’t on Sunday morning.

Yes, the first story is the better of the two. I did not see Up Against It but I'm reading her bio page on her Web site. Sounds like quite a project.
I LOVED her in March of the Falsettos
And here is her Web page for those interested.

Saturday I had lunch with Keith’s aunt & cousin. His mother was to have joined us but was waiting to have surgery, again, and wasn’t up to it. Due to low potassium levels the surgery didn’t happen until 12:00AM this morning. It’s nice she has a doctor that is a night owl.
Keith’s aunt and cousin will be going to NY soon and asked what plays they should get tickets to. I said THE DROWSY CHAPERONE. What else shall I suggest?
-
Dang! In the valley? My second gathering was in Northridge, beginning at 10:00.

Welcome DR BrettySpaghetti! Glad you joined us...and just in time for an upcoming Los Angeles area HHW get together that will likely occur next week!

BK, I am demanding nice sunny weather for my trip south next week. Make it so.

Welcome back DR Jane!
So CHERISH is yours and DH Keith's song...that is very sweet! And fitting for you two, I think!

Well, there's always DR elmore3003's fire escape, but I hear seating is rather limited... ::)

I always kept out hope that Kitty Carlisle would live long enough for me to one day meet her.

So was Jason Graae!
What is that lovely, insanely talented man doing these days?

Dear DR BrettySpaghetti,
Thank you for that wonderful introduction of yourself!
Now for the important issues:
1. What pets do you have? Names and breeds, please.
2. What do you think about Sanjaya ;)
1. None. Sorry. I live in a tiny non-pet-friendly apartment. However, I spend a lot of time with my close friends in Beverly Hills, who have a Teacup Poodle and a Japanese Chin. I love them like they're my own.
2. Sanjaya -- What can you say? He's a cute kid whose vocal talents are dwarfed by the others on the same stage. Melinda, now there's a singer. I thought Sanjaya did an appreciable version of "Besa Me Mucho" last week, but his performance this week was just short of embarrassing. Again, it doesn't help that we're left to compare him to Kiki and Jordin.
-
DR BrettySpaghetti: I love tacky things, so I think Sanjaya is swell. I also enjoy hearing Wing and Mrs. Miller.
-
Thanks for the review, DR SINGDAW....hmmmmm.....
-
P.S. I have never watched American Idol. I just love to see America embrace tackiness.
-
WELCOME to new DR BRETTY SPAGHETTI....what will your walk in music be?

Did you (or anyone) see Romance/Romance on A&E years ago...when they did such things?? I taped it, but I don't know exactly where the tape is. I also love this show. :)
I love the show as well. Saw it in NYC and also saw and taped the A&E version. However, I had analog cable back then, and it was a particularly bad night, so my tape is very grainy/snowy looking. I've hoped for years that the show would be released on DVD so I could ditch that abysmal copy, but so far, no such luck.
-
Home, James.
And make it snappy!
-
I began my afternoon with a WILD WILD WEST episode that guest starred Carroll O'Connor as a mortician/plastic surgeon who gave wanted criminals new faces and then blackmailed them to keep their new identities secret. An OK episode.

DR MBarnum will just stalk him till he's the right age, somewhere between 70 and death.
Perhaps Dr. Hunk's father is the right age for "now."

What a red letter day!
The return of DR Jane after many days away and to welcome new dear reader Bretty Spaghetti into our midst. Welcome back, DR Jane, and welcome, DR Brett

One can only hope that someday (and soon) it'll be available...legitimately. :)
-
Next, I watched WHERE THE SIDEWALK ENDS. Lots of surprises for me since I hadn't seen this before. I had no idea Otto Preminger directed (and produced) it. It had a great line-up of character actors I didn't know were in it: Gary Merrill, Tom Tully, Karl Malden, Craig Stevens. Gene Tierney was kind of bland, but Dana Andrews gives a quintessential noir leading man performance.
I really enjoyed it. And the transfer makes it look like a brand new movie. Not a blemish in sight on this transfer, and so sharp and clear you'd swear it was filmed yesterday.
-
DR Sandra will want to know if you like Cherry Coke and DR MBarnum will want to know if you're a body builder. If the answer to either is yes, run for your life now.
I like Cherry Coke, but that's irrelevant since I gave up sugar about six months ago. However, I have been trying to develop a taste for Cherry Coke Zero. And yes, I'm a body builder, if by "body" you mean lazy and by "builder" you mean slob.
DR is for Dear Reader, not doctor...
If it's all the same to you, I'm going to continue operating under the delusion that it stands for Doctor. I rather like the sound of "Doctor Spaghetti." ;D
-
One can only hope that someday (and soon) it'll be available...legitimately. :)
It was sold for a short time on VHS, but I suspect those are out of print, too.
-
Have finished writing proposal and have sent it off via e-mail.
MBarnum - sunny skies we've got - it's just cold and windy, too.

I finished the afternoon by beginning to watch (once again) HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE. It's been on HBO lately (not the widescreen version, not even on the HD channel), and I've been wanting to revisit it from the beginning. I got about 70 minutes in before I came upstairs to log on. I'll finish it tonight and then watch THE SOPRANOS leading into CROSSING JORDAN.
-
DR BrettySpaghetti: I love tacky things, so I think Sanjaya is swell. I also enjoy hearing Wing and Mrs. Miller.
I have the CD where Wing systematically destroys the songs of the Carpenters. I never thought the day would come when I would actually find a reason to be thankful that Karen wasn't with us anymore.

No, but I have a lovely leopard-spotted purse and a lawn flamingo. And I like bagpipe music. Does that count? And I have sparkly shoes.

DR singdaw - Alas, since there's really not that much time to surf the web, let alone read a magazine during the show, I will not have my laptop in the pit with me. And I think the light from the screen would be a bit noticeable.
However, when I was in the pit for Aida (Elton John, Tim Rice not Verdi) at the Kennedy Center, we all had our laptops with us since stage management traveled with an AirPort hub. We would try to make each other laugh by sending "certain" links to each other. ;) Actually, even during Mamma Mia! I would sometimes surf the web between songs.
-
DR singdaw - I was going to say that Variety jumped the gun - our official press night is not until this Thursday - but it seems you jumped me. Or something like that. ???
*Slow day at the office?

I wish this wind would abate, oh, yes, I wish this wind would abate.
-
Well, there is a lot of jumping going on, at any rate.
Yes, it is curious about Variety; it's not even on their website yet, that I can see. But it's your show; from now on, I will of course defer to you.
Office? What office?

Count me in as another Romance/Romance fan. I still remember their Tony montage. Scott Bakula can play my bass guitar anytime!
However, I have to say that piano/conductor/vocal score for that show is one of the most confusing scores I've had to decipher. Sometimes it's keyboard parts, sometimes it's cues, sometimes it just say that there are cues. -Thankfully, having the sound of the OCR ingrained in my brain made it somewhat easier to make sense of all those notes.
-
(And does any other DR remember that feature that "Playgirl" magazine did on Scott Bakula? Alas, no "hoo-hah", but still a nice article. -Ah, now I want to see an episode of "Quantum Leap".)

Well, I bought a turkey sandwich earlier at the market, and I believe I shall now consume it.

Yes, very sorry to read about Kitty Carlisle Hart's death. I was just enjoying THE DESERT SONG on CD a week or so ago.
If I had known earlier, I might have put in A NIGHT AT THE OPERA in her honor instead of HARRY POTTER/GOBLET OF FIRE earlier this afternoon.
-
I wonder if we will get some books about Moss Hart now that don't hedge their bets the way Steven Bach's DAZZLER did.

WELCOME to new DR BRETTY SPAGHETTI....what will your walk in music be?
Other than show tunes, I usually walk to various pop and rock stylings: Beatles, Todd Rundgren, Randy Newman, middle-period Prince, Jill Sobule, They Might Be Giants, Avril Lavigne, Keane, Travis, Jimmy Webb, Billy Joel, Jonatha Brooke, Magnetic Fields, Neil Young, XTC, Swan Dive, Aimee Mann, Simon & Garfunkel, The Smiths and Chinese diva Faye Wong.
I tend to eschew most jazz, blues, rap, metal and (yecch!) reggae. But I like a fair amount of R&B and modern country.
-
Have finished writing proposal and have sent it off via e-mail.
MBarnum - sunny skies we've got - it's just cold and windy, too.
Sunny! good! And since cold in LA means shorts and T-shirt weather anyplace else then I think all is well with my packing light.
-
I'm heading down now to tend to a few things, finish GOBLET OF FIRE, and the watch Sunday's THE SOPRANOS.

The first time that I was in a production of Man of La Mancha (and the very first community theater that I performed in, here in Olympia) was about the time that the Man of La Mancha episode of "Quantum Leap" was on! I've caught up.
Trivia you could do without. OK we could do without trivia anyway.
"Que Sera Sera" was a very big hit here in Oz in 1965 - by teen star Normie Rowe. He went on to be Jean Valjean in the first Oz production of Les Miz (with Philip Quast)
The Song was also a top 40 hit here for Mary Hopkin.

During the renovation a few years back, some of the name tags got lost/misplaced/etc. So, they're numbered, and there's a paper next to the display where people can identify - or guess - who's who in the pics. I definitely don't see Frances Farmer on that wall, but I'm thinking I may take pics of some of the remaining unknowns and post them here on HHW. I'm sure with this gang, we could name the un-named.
-
MBarnum we had snow yesterday. How was the weather up your way.
It was chilly in Santa Monica, and with the winds in L.A. you might take some clothes to layer, just in case. When are you leaving-Friday?
-
Thank you & I'm shocked & jealous you have never had a cavity.
While I was gone did you receive a new job offer or two?
I'm "on hold" for three gigs right now. We'll see what happens. It's just always nice to know that your name is being bandied about in the right circles.
-
(And does any other DR remember that feature that "Playgirl" magazine did on Scott Bakula? Alas, no "hoo-hah", but still a nice article. -Ah, now I want to see an episode of "Quantum Leap".)
[shadow=color,glow width,#characters wide] WHAT??? Scott doesn't have a HOO-HAH???[/color][/font][/shadow]
-
Just back from the dentist. Hand't been there in two years, so the cleaning was intense.
Still, only one cavity, and they said when I get it taken care of I won't even need novocaine.
Does your dentist have a girlfriend named Audrey? Maybe you should ask for the novocaine!!
-
Whew! Finally caught up!
Welcome DR BrettySpagghetti!
-
I have never noticed if my dreams are in color or B/W. I will have to pay more attention.
I can never remember my dreams...well, it's VERY rare for me to be able to remember a dream. :-\

Well it's now official....my last day at work is June 29. Woo Hoo!!! I shall be independent on Independence Day. Free from the tyranny of the oppressive government...or something like that

DR Edisauras. The Birds to not do "on Notice" or "on Hold" etc. They are from the Ron Pulliam school of thought.

I changed the date in a pretty nonchalant way so no one really knows I'm doing it because I don't want to stay there any longer than I have to

So did I! :D

So did I! :D

Well, "15" has been called, and since I have to look at one chart - we "clarified" something during the break... And since I want to make sure I'm all packed up so that I can jump in the van as soon as the show ends...
Laters...

So did I! :D

You just wore the dress.

Well it's now official....my last day at work is June 29. Woo Hoo!!! I shall be independent on Independence Day. Free from the tyranny of the oppressive government...or something like that
That calls for a cookie!

Welcome home DR Jane. Glad you had a wonderful reunion, but you were missed here.
How is Sherlock??
-
That calls for a cookie!
Oh let's go all out....how about a hot fudge sundae...although one of those cookies I hear so much about would be fun to try

Johnny Thunders? :P
Looks like his life (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnny_Thunders) is a made-to-order documentary for Edisaurus! (Rock, New Orleans, mystery death, Ramones...)

See? Cillaliz gets it!
-
Not unless they ask nicely.
"Please, sir. may I have another" to be precise.
-
My kitchen is now the most boring shades of light blue and off white I have ever seen.
Maybe I can do something like they did on those decorating shows you folks were always talking about. Like maybe gluing feathers to the walls? Or LPs? Or breaking some dishes and spackling them on the walls?
-
You just wore the dress.
;D
Or the blindfold ;D
-
I shall now be on my way to sup and then see a French motion picture entertainment.

BK, it is so windy in LA that the wind blew all the way out here.

See? Cillaliz gets it!
Me, too!
Sanjaya--the next American Idol!!!

Well, I'm off to watch--something...

You just wore the dress.

But of course!! :D

I used to pretend to be Kitty Carlisle when we pretended to play "To Tell The Truth" as kids.

an OZ welcome to DR Brett Spaghet.

On the Tiffin conference front, today one panelist emailed me for the exact address of the venue so she can program her GPS and another inquired about the level of formality for wardrobe purposes. I figure if we're getting those kinds of questions 48 hours out, we're in pretty good shape.
-
Thanks to all who have welcomed me. And to those who plan to welcome me in the future. And also, to those who haven't really decided how they plan to deal with the matter.

Bretty-In case you haven't figured it out, Sherlock is our 8th month old Bernese Mountain Dog. The poor guy had shoulder & elbow surgery. We don't know when he will be permited to play, jump, or run again.
-
To answer your question from yesterday. Yes I do live near lake worth. It is two cities (or so) north of me off the I95 about 15-20 minutes on good traffic day.
There is also a small independent movie theater in the Fort Lauderdale area called Cinema Paradiso. www.cinemaparadiso.org
That's the one we're at, May 18-20. And we're also at the Lake Worth Playhouse May 4-10. We showed at these theatres last year as part of the premiere in a satellite Full Frame Festival outreach program, so it's nice of them to have us back!
-
And my triumvirate of favorite "underappreciated" scores: Doonesbury, Romance/Romance, and Jeeves -- the original, not the redo. That may be my favorite music ever!
Brett
Anyone for a fondness for Jeeves whether it be the original or By Jeeves is very welcome here :P
-
I see DR Bretty has joined us! Welcome to our strange little world!
-
Thank you :D
Please tell DH Richard at least he can read, watch tv or carry on a conversation-do something! ;D
When I got home from work tonight he wanted to go to the library for a fresh batch of DVDs. Tomorrow he starts his 4-6 weeks of physical therapy. Do dogs go to PT?

Say, how do you attach things to one of these posts? I'm attempting to attach a jpg under 200 KB, but it doesn't work. (Much like my brother.)
-
now we're all trying to figure out what to do and where to go next Tuesday when we have a 10:30AM(?!?!?!?) matinee and an 8:00PM show. All that time in between.
DR JoseSPiano, will ruminate on this and let you know what I come up with. :-\

Say, how do you attach things to one of these posts?
DR BrettySpaghetti, look for a PM shortly. :)

I like Cherry Coke, but that's irrelevant since I gave up sugar about six months ago. However, I have been trying to develop a taste for Cherry Coke Zero.
If you like Cherry Coke, then you're all right by me. I had Cherry Coke and Cocoa Puffs for lunch today. In that order.
-
DR Sandra - Good to see you!!!! :)

but it doesn't work. (Much like my brother.)

It's good to be back!
I am once again eating Cocoa Puffs. BK, I see what you mean by "unseemly residue."

DR Jane, that's sort of how my DH Richard feels about his shoulder-surgery recovery! Thanks for your concern earlier. And

Perhaps DH Richard and DD Sherlock should be hanging out together
-
Apparently, there were actually two Playgirl Bakula features, and you can read transcriptions of them both here (http://www.mindspring.com/~pashworth/playgirlarticles.html).
No pics, unfortunately. :(
Oh, but we only read them for the articles, anyway!

Oh, but we only read them for the articles, anyway!
There are articles??? Who knew?
-
In honor of the recovering DH (Dear Husband) Richard and DD (Dear dog) Sherlock not being able to dance, I will not dance for page 15...
-
Other than show tunes, I usually walk to various pop and rock stylings: Beatles, Todd Rundgren, Randy Newman
You will find there are fellow Newman fans on thie site! :)
-
Do dogs go to PT?
Yes they do. If there was a dog therapy program here we would use it. PT for Sherlock would be swimming, in a small dog sized tank with some kind of shoulder harness, to strengthen his muscles without harming his joints. He was becoming very beautiful & perfectly muscled before all this happened.

Saw 110 IN THE SHADE tonight. A wee wee bit slow going at points during the first act, but once they get to "Raunchy," the pace picks up, the show kicks into gear and the rest of the first act is emotionally devastating; and the second act is a lovely rollercoaster ride (except for the "Little Red Hat" number, stunningly performed but I just didn't get the number). And some seemingly odd casting against type for Starbuck and the Sheriff, but that pays off remarkably by the end of the show.
The set, as reported here via a friend of Ben's, is lovely, although extremely simple and (except for the final effect which will not be spoiled) economical.

AMERICAN IDOL RESULTS SPOILER

I was disturbed to find Blake in the bottom 3. And even more disturbed that to find those who had been in the bottom in the top (people like phil and chris). I have nothing against these two, I just find it so odd that people are changing their votes week to week. Either that or the votes are so close.
I was not surprised that sanjaya was gone, or that lakisha was in the B2. I had come across a very accurate prediction that had this exact result.
Geez, simon was grinning from ear to ear. He had a feeling it was coming. I was actually happy he (sanjaya) was not saved. Because that would have just encouraged his fans and made them vote more.
-
110 IN THE SHADE SPOILER, BUT IF YOU'RE THINKING OF SITTING IN THE FRONT ROW:
The front row gets wet at the end of the show, seemingly very wet. (And not just from watching Chris Innvar. :) )

DR JEANNE - Dream O Matic 6000 says that those things in color in our dreams are things we have an understanding or deeper connection to - those things in b/w are usually more mysterious or unknown to us....or things we want to keep at a distance.
Thank you, JRAND.
-
Yep, it was for sale. Maybe only mail order as part of that whole A&E Clairol(?) series.
Exactly right! In fact, I think the commercial for its sale is still on the tape I made.

Hello DRs and H/Ks and lovelies and studlies...... I hope all is well with all of the assorted flavors this evening in the Living Room.
We must be seemly and neat, as the Grande Mensch is out in the land of French cinema!

And I have looked back over the various posts and answers regarding our newest dear reader here...... Bretty Spaghetti.
At times like this (and while DR Elmo is being reticent), I usually feel a large streak of Ouiser come over me.......
..."now I've never seen you around here before, and I know everyone in this town..."
-
I finished HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE. Always find it exciting and very moving, and it certainly moves the series into very dark waters. I'm sure this summer's movie installment will continue in the dark vein (if the book is any indication.)
-
In other words..........welcome DR Bretty de Pasta
-
I hope all is well tonight for our dear DR Jose, and that those sinus/allergy/yukky things are lightening up.
You take care dear Jose !

Today in the mail I got an Ebay item I won the other day: the DVD of THE VIPs from the Burton-Taylor DVD set. Warners isn't selling THE VIPs separately, but someone on Ebay had bought the set and was selling individual items.
The enhanced transfer is glorious looking in terms of sharpness and lack of damage to the print used for the transfer. Other than the process shots looking grainy (and they almost always do on old films), the film looks immaculate. Yes, the Metrocolor tends to make flesh tones a bit red, but otherwise, it's gorgeous, and I watched the whole thing with great enjoyment this evening.
-
You lived on Jane street? Or are you referring to my maiden name?
Your maiden name.
-
And one for Metrocolor

CROSSING JORDAN had a frustrating episode with Dr. Bug arrested by Homeland Security suspected of being a terrorist. The unlimited power of Homeland Security is very frightening right now, and this episode brought it out clearly. Jordan was also having hallucinations thinking that the operation she had just come through had not been successful. That problem was sorted out by the end of the episode, too.
-
LOST had another nail-biter as an early view of Charlie taking an arrow in the throat kept me on the edge of my seat wondering if it was going to happen for real. Tense episode and one with the usual wonderful surprises.
-
As for IDOL results, I'd say that the contest starts in earnest next week. We've seen almost everyone but Melinda and Jordin at both the bottom and the top, so from now on, it's going to be a dogfight.

DID THE DEVIL MAKE HIM DO IT?
When unexplained violence takes center stage, we tend to turn to modern psychology to explain it.
But there is an alternative explanation, one that has been played out in film, stage and writings since the beginning of history.
Was Cho Seung-Hui schizophrenic … psychotic … manic-depressive? Or were the shooting deaths of 32 people, including Cho himself, at Virginia Tech University part of the ongoing struggle between God and Satan … good against evil … lightness and darkness?
Could Cho have been possessed by the Devil? Could that explain the massacre at Virginia Tech?
Dr. Richard Roberts, president of Oral Roberts University, shouts an unequivocal “Yes!”
“Based on what I’ve seen in the news," Roberts said in an interview, "there’s no doubt that this act was Satanic in origin."
Well ... I'm glad we finally have that settled!

DR JRand - Thanks for the FF specifics. I'll take a look at the wall of posters to see if I spot that one.

Hmm... Since I don't have to be anywhere tomorrow until 5:00pm (the train back up to Westport), I could actually be a nightowl tonight. Hmm... Although, since I've been up since 7:30am, I seriously doubt I'll be burning too much of the midnight oil tonight.
