Title: A NOID
Post by: bk on January 05, 2004, 12:02:24 AM
Well, you've read the piquant notes and I hope you weren't annoyed by them or even a noid by them.  And now, it's time to post until those damnable cows come home.

Hmm... I should be in bed by now... I have rehearsal in 13 hours! ;)

As for laugh-out-loud... hmm.. I'll have to think/sleep on that one.

However, I should be home in time for the chat, so... YIPPEE!

And, once again, Goodnight.

Good early morning everyone!
Jed - I too heard that he was found alive, and could hardly believe it!  Good news indeed.
A foot of snow in Tacoma???  What IS this world coming to?  And here I am in my tank tops and bikinis...it will be a cruel cruel awakening when I return to the arctic in three days.
The Topic of the Day -
Saw Noises Off as a stage production first, then the movie...laughed SO hard at both of them.  I guess it's cheating because it's stand-up comedy, but the first time I watched Bill Cosby "Himself" I just about died laughing.  Hmm..I'm sure more will occur to me tomorrow.
Off to bed...busy day tomorrow (yes bk, I too am BUSY) but I will do my best to make it to the chat.
'night all!

Laughs. Pete Cook and Dud Moore in "Beyond The Fringe" (or whatever the one was called) that I saw in 1973.  Movies: Not one for laughing out usually but "A Mighty Wind" made me chuckle. No doubt will think of others. "Young Frankenstein" was also a favourite. (Favorite DR Ron).

...Hoped to get a great night's sleep. Dozed off during the tape of SEX AND. Went to bed with visions of sugar plums and 6 hours of sleep glorious sleep. Up again at 2:30 a.m., alas. Just read the late notes from last night. Yes, our esteemed bk reminded me that I forgot to list one item of food in my late-night pig-out. A slice of cake. Tiny but utterly delish. I blame that seemingly innocent torte, however, for opening the floodgates which led to the rest of the oink-out and my eventual waking at this ungodly hour. Now I shall BUSY myself with trying to get back to sleep. My dog is snorring, the whole world is drooling into its (their?) pillows - only I am awake. Cursed (pronounced "cur-said " for maximum effect) Parisienne. Devilish Benes. I lay this at your webbed Viktor toes.

Good morning, all!  What a nice bunch of posts!  I went to bed TOO early.

I watched that show MBARNUM - and later worked with an actress who had a small part on it.  She said they spent money like crazy and no one knew what he was doing - and it just didn't work.   And yes DRJED I enjoy Arrested Development as well.

The first woman on Mars, as reported yesterday, has been identified as Zsa Zsa Gabor!

Movies that made me laugh out loud include:

WHAT'S UP DOC?
PORKY'S - although it was embarrassing to laugh
I will try to think of others....

Shows:

Dame Edna - The World Tour
A CHORUS OF DISAPPROVAL - which was an entry in a drama competition I saw in Ireland, just so damn funny

and a Local production of MY FAIR LADY - I couldn't help it, it was just so bad - even the scene changes were funny.

Plays. The one that really made me laugh out loud - I think throughout the entire play - was Peter Shaffer's Black Comedy. And I remember just about bursting during the Pigeon Sisters' scene of The Odd Couple.

Movies. Scenes that pop to mind: Madeline Kahn as Lili Von Shtupp in Blazing Saddles; Madeline Kahn getting off on Mel Brooks' phone call (he's being strangled, she thinks he's talking dirty) in High Anxiety; Alan Arkin's dental-office scene (leaving the poor woman with a mouthful of equipment) in The In-Laws. And in Austin Powers, the toilet scene, with Mike Myers and Tom Arnold, really cracked me up. (Austin, being strangled from behind, gasps: "Who does Number Two work for?" Texan Tom Arnold, in the next stall, shouts back: "You tell that turd who's boss!")

Good morning dear esteemed, lithe, sinewy, and newly-dishy BK --

Thanks for your kind thoughts over this past weekend.  I'm back in Phoenix for a few days, and wanted to check in here and see if the Living Room was in good order.

On Wednesday, I have to drag my bones back to Chicago to get some work done for about 9 days!! Ugh !!  I'm just praying that by Wednesday the weather will be better than yesterday evening...  300 flights cancelled because of snow.

I have caught up reading all of the "BK"s Notes" for the days I've been gone, but I just can't even make a dent in all of the daily posts..

So,,,,,,this poor traveler needs encapsulated highlights... something like "Hainsie-soundbites" to just catch me up on anything like monumental changes or events in any DRs lives over the past few days.

Pretty please......with hot fudge, and Leslie Parrish, and Guy Madison on top ????!!

The QOTD --

For movies -- Some of the tops for me would definitely be What's Up Doc,  The In-Laws (original version), Blazing Saddles.

Stage --  Dame Edna,  An Evening with George Burns, and even though it is cabaret/stand-up and not a play, 2 "one-man" evenings; one with Lewis Black, and the other with Dennis Wolfberg (who sadly died way too young!!)  If something really gets my funny bone going, I'm afraid I'm an outrageous laugher.  Poor Kerry justs trys to slink under the table.

As a teenager, THE GREAT RACE gave me the biggest laughs. My brother and I came to blows over this many years ago. He insisted MAD WORLD was the funniest comedy ever. I thought THE GREAT RACE was. I remember the audience being hysterical through much of the film, and so was I.

As an adult, I think probably YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN produced the biggest belly laughs from me and the people around me. I remember having a hard time getting my breath from laughing. I had the same reaction during AIRPLANE! Just one gut-busting laugh after another in that spoof.

Funniest play I ever sat through was the revival of THE WOMEN with Alexis Smith, Kim Hunter, Dorothy Loudon, Rhonda Fleming, Myrna Loy. It was exciting enough seeing all these wonderful stars in one play, but it was so catty and bitchy that the audience was gasping and laughing at the same time - a delicious combination.

I agree that NOISES OFF is probably one of the best farces of the last 50 years.

I wanted to comment about something DR Jed said last night about being considerate of his students when he's a teacher. Smart lad!

Teaching English for 30 years, I had four disciplines that fell within my class: grammar, composition, literature, spelling/vocabulary, so it was impossible for me not to assign homework almost every day of class in some of these subjects. But there were precious few days that I didn't give my students at least 10 minutes of class time to make a start on my assignments; that also aided in allowing them to ask me questions if something puzzled them rather than getting home and becoming stumped by something they had to do because they weren't sure how to proceed.

In parent conferences, that was one thing I could always point to with pride when I had students who wouldn't do homework and subsequently had their grades reduced. I could show them that their children had time to at least make a start on assignments and get some credit for them, and when they had NOTHING to show me the next day, I knew they not only didn't do the work, but also wasted the class time I had given them for it. Kids never had a leg to stand on, and the parents were always aghast when learning that their kids weren't making use of the time given. Most of the time the parents came in thinking I was an ogre who beat with kids mercilessly with assignments, and they left realizing that their children were usually at fault when assignments weren't completed.

Plays:

Noises Off
Lend me a Tenor
Lettice and Lovage (Maggie Smith’s tour guide speeches)
Forbidden Broadway (and it’s various incarnations)

Movies:

Mary, Mary (A search for a cigarette – any cigarette – any butt!)
Young Frankenstein
Barefoot in the Park
Auntie Mame
Airplane

der Brucer (wondering if BK will posit why if we have "incarnations" we don't have "outpetunias"?)

I shall not posit, I shall laugh and laugh instead.  I haven't seen the film of Mary, Mary since a sneak preview months before its release.  I do remember it being very funny.  And I'd agree with Barefoot in the Park, also very funny.  Two I forgot - and seeing these on their initial release with a full house was unbelievable; you could barely hear half the dialogue the audience was screaming so loud.  Billy Wilder's Some Like it Hot and One, Two, Three.

Damn! Woudln't you know I can't put my hands on the PLAYBILL right this second. I have got to get them better organized. Anyway, as best I remember, Kim Hunter was Mary Haines, Alexis Smith was Crystal Allen, Myrna Loy was the mother, Dorothy Loudon was Edith, Rhonda Fleming was Amanda. Can't recall who was Sylvia. It had to have been another big star, so I'll look some more later today and report back. I remember that Playbill clearly - had a women looking at her reflection in a hand mirror and in the mirror were the words "THE WOMEN."

Happy New Year to all DRs.

Funniest plays/movies:

I'll have to agree that Noises Off, the original B'way production with Dorothy Louden, was one of the funniest although another production that I saw a few years ago at Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey was deadly.

Also, Odd Couple, with Matthau and Art Carney; Barefoot in the Park with Ashley and Redford.  I also laughed myself silly at another Neil Simon play, although not a great one, Rumors with Chrisine Baranski.

Movies, I would include Woody Allen's Take the Money and Run and Bananas, Billy Wilder's One, Two, Three,  Stanley Kramer's It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, Tootsie, What's Up Doc?, and many others that I can't think of right now.

Sneaking a post from MTI...hope I don't get caught!

I'm in an unspeakably bad mood today and I don't know why...probably because I slept quite poorly and it's disgustingly gross and wet out. It wasn't raining when I left my apartment but boy, oh, boy! When I got off the subway for my six block trek to MTI, of course, the torrential downpour began, so I had to buy a new umbrella, for which I was basically raped...$10 for a black umbrella that reads "I (HEART) NY" on it... I look like a tourist.

The phones honestly have not stopped ringing since I got here and the people on the other end of the line are by far the dumbest bunch of folks our fine nation has to offer. ME: "What state are you calling from?" THEM: "Chicago." Uh-huh...

I received a call from the postal inspection lady...the search is on for the person or persons who took my copy of the Merman autobio and other things. Beware, oh ye thieves of correspondence!

Ugh, these damned phones!

Funniest play I've ever seen: NOISES OFF. I howled and cried and hooted and hollered. I think I embarrassed my theatre companions. :-\

Funniest movies: AUNTIE MAME, AIRPLANE!, WAITING FOR GUFFMAN, NOISES OFF! and THE BRADY BUNCH MOVIE.

Good morning/afternoon!

Boy did I sleep in!  And boy did I need it!  When I finally looked over at my clock radio it said 12:00 - on the dot!  So I have a couple of hours to dawdle - and do some work - before heading into rehearsal at 5:00.  And now that I've slept on it....

-And most of these will sound familiar...

Theatre: Noises Off, A... My Name Is Alice (there are some funny bits in there), and a really bad-it-was-so-good community theatre production of The Music Man (I've never seen so many lines of people on stage.. so often - and I wasn't the only one laughing)

Movies: Waiting for Guffman, What's Up Doc?, It's a Mad, Mad, Mad World (was that enough "Mad's"?), and a few others I can't think of right now.

DR Jason - I'm amazed you did not list DOTV?!?!?

Oh, and don't get caught!

BK, I'm here...Craig should be so lucky as to have run off with me!  ;)

I was out for most of yesterday with Dear Best Friend Isis...she treated me to a belated birthday lunch at Bennigan's.  Bennigan's has the best frou-frou drinks in all the land...we shared this huge glass of something called a Sapphire Splash.  Mmm...I looove being 21...not that I abuse the privilege or anything.  I never drink anything heavy.

Then we went to see Something's Gotta Give, which I thought was just faboo.  If Diane Keaton doesn't get an Oscar nomination for her work, then something is wrong.  I loved Jack Nicholson's performance too....he parodied his image with grace and wit.

Damn, we can't include musicals??  Well, the funniest plays I've actually seen (meaning they made me laugh the hardest) are "Noises Off," "The Tale of the Allergist's Wife", and "The Women."

For movies, anything by Woody Allen or Mel Brooks cracks me up..."Sleeper" and "Love and Death" are great choices, BK!  Have you guys been watching Curb Your Enthusiasm?  Oh, so funny.

Jason--feel better!  Oh wow...someone on the postal staff stole your Merman autobiog?  Wow.

WELCOME HOME,
BEN AND ANTHONY!

Back in the early 80s, when I was working as a travel agent and tour conductor, I took a group to London for a Theater Tour.  Just before we left for the tour, our wholesaler in England substituted a new play for the show we were scheduled to see.  My group was not very happy about the switch to some unknown British comedy, and I was prepared for a lot of negative comments after we returned from the theater.  The show, of course, was Noises Off, and our agency ended up pulling off quite a coup by being one of the first American travel groups to discover the show.

Other plays:
Black Comedy,
Lend Me a Tenor,
Mary Mary (gasping at a bowl of dried apricots,
 “I thought they were ears.”)

Films:
Blazing Saddles
Bob and Carol, Ted and Alice
Auntie Mame
Airplane

Jose: I didn't think we were allowed to do musicals... In that case, then yes--most definitely DANCE OF THE VAMPIRES. I laughed until I cried and nearly wet myself during the intermission. It was so heinous I had to see it five times.

URBAN COWBOY, however, was not laughable...it was just heinous and painful to watch. HAIRSPRAY gave me some good laughs (legit laughs...funny "haha"...not funny "yikes") as did WICKED, and AVENUE Q (which I've only seen on video, but not on any video that I own, I promise you) was hilarious as well.

Two More for the movie list:

The Laine Kazan scene in My Favorite Year

And how could I have forgotten to mention Auntie Mame and Airplane (thanks, TCB)? I'm starting to chuckle already thinking about some of the scenes from Airplane. I will agree with the other DRs who have mentioned Noises Off - so funny!  I also got some real genuine laughs out of Hairspray and Avenue Q.

I have a bad memory and not many movies are coming to mind immediately.. though I do remember laughing like a crazy person during Lost in Translation.  I also thought Bend It Like Beckham was really funny.  Both times the whole theatre of people was also laughing uproariously, which made it easier to be loud.  :D

The title of today's notes reminds me of the dreadful movie Cool World, with Gabriel Byrne and Brad Pitt, and Kim Basinger as a cartoon.  (Humans in the movie were referred to as "noids," short for humanoids.)  It was so bad I was a noid with myself for having spent the time and money.

Ah, a quick moment to post after lunch.

Thanks for all the welcome backs. Makes me feel good to be on-line again.

Had a difficult night of sleep also. First, they changed the locks on the front door of our building. They said it would happen sometime this morning (January 5th). For some reason, they did it late last night so at midnight our next door neighbor buzzed our flat repeatedly because he was locked out! He hadn't taken his new key with him because we all expected the change to happen this morning. At least the keys work! Then we went back to bed. One hour later, at 1am our crazy neighbor (most New York apartment buildings have at least one crazy neighbor, not crazy like Lucy, but certifiable crazy) slammed her apartment door (she's on 3 and we're on 4 and it's a walk-up). It sounded like a gun shot. Then she began shrieking and screaming for the police. Our first thought was that her also mentally unstable son (I'm trying to be nice here, I've used crazy too many times) had done something either to himself or to her. She screamed and screamed but by the time we picked up the phone the police and an ambulance had arrived. One of the other tenants had called 911. We still don't know what happened except that we saw out the window that V and F (they shall remain nameless) were led out of the building by the police and escorted into the ambulance. We finally got back to bed and sleep about 1:45am and I got up at 6 to go back to work!

That said, now responding to the QOTD, the first part of The Ruling Class with Peter O'Toole (when he thought he was Jesus) had me screaming with laughter. The second part when he turns into a Jack the Ripper kind of character gets spooky and dark and not funny but scary. I also remember peeing over Airplane. None of the Airplane sequels have hit me quite the way the first one did, I think because it was so unexpected. Other movies and plays have been mentioned already, such as Auntie Mame, Hairspray (the movie), which I saw in Paris. We were the only Americans in the theatre and we were rolling in the aisles. Some of the others were laughing and giggling but nothing like those two crazy Americans! Waiting for Guffman and What's Up Doc? also made me laugh.

My most recent theatrical laugh fest came from Avenue Q. I still have to go back to see it again because I laughed and missed so many jokes.

This is turning into a rather long post (I'm making up for the past month of errantness and truantness) and I must get back to work.

Don't know if I'll be at chat tonight. I'll try, but we are getting together with friends to share our stories of England so if I'm there it will be late.

Ann mentioning Bill Cosby reminds me of an incident on a flight.  Passengers with their head sets on were laughing rather loudly.  The person next to me put his on saying Bill Cosby is doing a very funny routine.  I of course joined in along with almost the entire flight of passengers.  I never heard so much laughter on a plane.  Within the year the BILL COSBY SHOW, based on this hysterical routine, was a hit T.V. show.

I must confess to another guilty pleasure (not that one, Ozzie):

The Big Bus Starring Joseph Bologna, Stockard Channing, John Beck, Rene Auberjonois, Lynn Redgrave, Sally Kellerman, and Ruth Gordon.  Unfortunately, it is apparently an acquired taste, because a lot of my friends have watched it with me, but few find it quite as funny.

Okay, two more:

Harold and Maude
Wet Hot American Summer with Christopher Meloni (the only man I can think of that I would want to share a jail cell with)

Without a doubt, I never laughed so hard as when I saw the original London production of NOISES OFF.  A brilliant production of MISALLIANCE at the Old Globe had me weeping with laughter.  Who'd have thunk it?  Shaw!  I agree with Bruce about COMEDY OF ERRORS, I have a couple of productions on tape...one British, the other with the Flying Karamozov Brothers.  Both Hysterical.  Years ago I saw a great production of THE PLAY'S THE THING at the Cincinnati Playhouse-in-the-Park which also had me rolling in the aisle.  The Cincy Playhouse also did an hilarious production of THE RIVALS.  This was in the days of Word Baker (director of the original FANTASTICKS) and he directed both plays.

I literally fell out of my seat laughing at BLAZING SADDLES the first time.  I was gone when they started singing I Get a Kick Out of You and didn't stop through the rest of the film.  ALL ABOUT MARY got me pretty damned giddy.  ONE, TWO, THREE.  THEODORA GOES WILD.  MIRACLE OF MORGAN'S CREEK. DUCK SOUP.  SOUTH PARK, THE MOVIE...

There are just too many...I laugh a lot.

I also think how funny you find something depends on whom you are watching the movie/play with.. I've seen some things with friends that, because they were all in stitches, have been really entertaining, but I know if I were by myself I wouldn't have been laughing out loud.

I thought of two more: Margaret Cho's I'm The One That I Want and Notorious C.H.O.  I don't know if they count as proper films since they are of her live performances, but I nearly fell out of my seat laughing during both.

Oh, but I did buy my plane tickets for my trip to Memphis in February for my annual stint at the Unified Professional Theatre Auditions.  Now, I just have to decide: Will it be Corky's for the BBQ or The Rendezvous for the ribs?  -Although I like Corky's ribs too.  Of course, a lunch at The Cupboard (a great ole "meat and three") is always in the question!  Those corn muffins and hush puppies they put on the table when you sit down... I've gone through one basket by myself!  Maybe, quite possibly, two at one time!

There's Something About Mary
The Mad Miss Manion
Bringing Up Baby

Ground Hog Day
Shall We Dance?  Thank goodness it had subtitles.  The audience was laughing so hard we would have missed some of the lines.

tc as soon as you mentioned Ruth Gordon I thought of HAROLD AND MAUDE.

Charles I forgot about Miricale of Morgan’s Creek

Ben I agree with your description of THE RULING CLASS

Noises Off
The Man Who Came to Dinner, the play, not the boring movie
Marcel Marceau.  Everyone in the theater could hear me laughing hysterically, which means I was hyperventilating and gasping for air.

I could do this all day and still not remember them all.

Welcome back to Ben and Ant.
When I was a kid I loved the Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis movies and as a young teenager the "Carry On" movies made me laugh too. Thnaks for the reminder about "Airplane". It was retitled "Flying High" in OZ and was delightfully silly. I think I also laughted at "The Naked Gun". "The Producers" film and stage were also "chuckle" shows and of course "What's Up Doc".

DR Charles Pouge, you reminded me...the Marx Bros. movies, their early ones always crack me up!

And DR Jane, I must also agree with you choice of Shall We Dance! Funny, funny, movie

I remember going to see  it in the theater and my buddies weren't too crazy about seeing a Japanese movie with subtitles, but they all loved it!

I want to add WHAT'S UP DOC, but I haven't seen it since I was a kid, and I don't know if I would still laugh or not!

For me, "Some Like it Hot" delivers the most laughs time and time again!

I adore "Love and Death" -- the scene with Allen, Keaton and the Spanish ambassador and Keaton and Allen bopping each other over the head with a bottle keeps me in hysterics!

"Sleeper" is a gem, too.

DR MattH:  Neither "It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" nor "The Great Race" had me laughing very much.  The latter was a lot of fun, but the few laughs I got were for effects, such as the sparkle off one of Tony Curtis' teeth.  I thought Lemmon and Falk much too broad.  I guess I could have given you and your brother a reason to wallop someone else! :)

"What's Up, Doc" has some wonderfully funny moments.  It's one of my favorites, too.

I can't say I fell out of my seat, but I guffawed quite a bit watching "Tootsie" -- and it seems to improve with age.

I especially love the soap opera sequences when Hoffman's character Dorothy ad libs and has everyone trying to guess where she might be going with it!  A few sight gags are hysterical, too...hailing a taxi, pulling down a girdle, etc.

DR Dan-in-Toronto was asking a day or so ago about Oz National Treasures. Dame Edna is there and has been for a few decades. Heights never reached by Dame Joan. It is probably a good thing that North America has not been introduced to Sir Les Patterson - Dame Edna would refuse to share the same stage (at the same time). Most Australian performances of Mr Humphries would have both characters. (likewise the UK). I don't think I have ever seen a Star "work" her audience as well as Dame Edna.

I remember being trapped by a great blizzard in Howard Johnson's Motel in Newport RI. While the storm was raging all about, I was curled up reading "The Shining" - talk about atmosphere. Forunately the Motel bar did not run out of booze, but four days of a HoJo's diet was not a gormands delight.

DR Tomovoz,

Dame Edna is indeed a treasure. I saw her in Toronto at a Wednesday matinee in the middle of winter. New York has its matinee ladies from tony New Rochelle; ours come in on buses from small towns in Ontario. Dame Edna called to the stage one woman who was bundled in a down-filled pickle-green snowsuit. Her comments on the woman's outfit were hilarious, as you can imagine ("So this is what they wear to the Toronto theatre, dear"). We were falling out of our seats. And the woman in the snowsuit was perfectly comfortable with Dame Edna's comments. There was no meanness whatsoever.

Here's the website for the Internet Broadway DataBase listing of the 1973 revival of The Women (http://www.ibdb.com/production.asp?ID=3189)

According to the site, it was both Rhonda Fleming and Myrna Loy's Broadway debuts.

Laugh-Out-Loud Movies:

Auntie Mame
Finding Nemo
I'm The One That I Want (Margaret Cho)
Sleeper
South Park:  Bigger, Longer and Uncut

I’ve never seen a production of Noises Off.  However, I was in a production as Tim Allgood, and it was one of the most fun productions that I’d been involved in.

Dame Edna live in Seattle a couple of years ago was one of the funniest experiences of my life!  Also, a community theater production of Angry Housewives here in Olympia and a professional production in Tacoma were both absolutely hysterical!

DR Jose, I have been assured by a stockholder and frequent customer of Krispy Kreme that the maple doughnuts are still sold, sometimes in grocery store cartons as well as at the factory stores themselves.

For funniest TV show - POLICE SQUAD! which took the AIRPLANE scenario and did it in a farcical thirty minute TV comedy. (They later morphed into the NAKED GUN movies, but they were never as fast and funny as the TV series that spawned them.)

Thanks to all of you who sent be get well wishs.  I'm back at work and feeling a little better but very tired still.  Just a couple of comments on the past couple of days notes and posts before I go home to a (hopefully) long night's sleep.

I never got TIVO because I already control my watching time with a VHS and it has the one big fault that VHS has (I know because I called TIVO to check this).  If a program is scheduled from say 8:00 to 9:00 but a sports overrun or unscheduled news event pushes it back to 8:20 to 9:20 you will still get 8:00 to 9:00 recorded causing you to miss the last 20 minutes of whatever you are recording.  In fact if I know there is football on Sundays I always add an extra thirty minutes to the recording time which I don't think you can do with TIVO although there may be a manual override.

Funniest play I ever saw: LEND ME A TENOR with the original cast.  A later production with a less skilled cast was not nearly as funny.

Glad you are feeling better.

Sad but true about TIVO.  It is very frustrating when that happens.  If I remember it will be a possibility, which rarely happens, I program the following show to also record.

MBarnum, most movie comedies simply don't play as well whilst sitting at home.  Oh, one might laugh every now and then, but real comedy movie viewing is a shared communal experience.

Says the man who watches movie after movie at home. :D

I agree wholeheartedly, BK.  And I, too, very rarely get to the movie theater (just too danged pricey for me).  My most pleasurable movie watching experiences are always when a large group of friends watch something, rather than solitary viewing.

Do we think Panni is BUSY?  And does Panni not laugh out loud at movies?  We need Panni Picks.  But Panni IS BUSY, that we know.  Today I got to direct some voice-over auditions, which was fun.  I'm loving your lists, and I'm happy to see that many film and play choices coincide with mine own.

I didn't see Noises Off on B'way or even in local theater, but I did see a production at my alma matter LACC that was pretty hilarious and well-done.

Heigh-ho!  I'm back from my Indiana Adventure, and trust that you all had a wonderful holiday!

Movies that made/make me laugh a lot:

Naked Gun  (take THAT, DR Matt! ;) )
Pee-Wee's Big Adventure
Raising Arizona
Marx Bros. movies, Cocoanuts through A Day at the Races, inclusive
Ghostbusters (the first time I saw it)
My Favorite Wife
Arsenic and Old Lace
No Time for Sergeants

Well, that'll do for now

How could I forgot to mention Arsenic and Old Lace!  Also very funny were My Favorite Wife, Ghostbusters, No Time for Sergeants and Raising Arizona

Can't think of many funny movies right now. SOME LIKE IT HOT; DUCK SOUP; BLAZING SADDLES; THE INSPECTOR GENERAL... Will think of more later. TV - Absolutely "Chuckles Bites the Dust" - I can watch that ten times in a row and still laugh out loud. In fact, I used to screen it when I would be asked once in a while to give a master class on comedy writing. And even after analyzing it to death, it still makes me laugh.

The funniest play I ever saw - from the stage - was Shaw's Caesar and Cleopatra. Not a hoot-fest, you say, DR's. True. But I was doing the production at the Shaw Festival and the company was nearing the end of the interminable Canadian run before going on tour. We were all a bit hysterical and exhausted. So in the final scene, as Caesar is about to sail off, and we're all standing staring into the house (the house being the ocean), the actor playing Epiladorus (can't remember how to spell it) sneezed and the actor playing Caesar said, totally in character, "Bless you, my son." For some reason, I thought this was the funniest line that had ever been uttered in the history of the theater. I totally corpsed, except there was nowhere to go, nowhere to turn as I had to keep staring out at the damn ocean. These strange little strangled sounds started coming out of me and I was literally peeing my pants (panties) - which is incredibly horrible in a diaphanous Egyptian gown. Anyway, I finally had to turn around and face upstage - so while everybody else was staring out at the ocean, I was looking at god knows what behind me. I'm surprised I wasn't kicked out of Equity.
So, that DR's is the funniest theatrical experience I've ever had.

I re-watched LOVE ME TONIGHT today with the Kreuger commentary on, and he does indeed declare the film the best movie musical ever made and then proceeds to explain how exceptional it is during the film's running time. I understand how fond he was of the director, but isn't this carrying mentor-ship just a bit too far? Well, to each his own, I guess. It's a very entertaining musical with some stunning camerawork and a wonderful score, but I'd never call it the best ever screen musical.

My Fox News-watching, outspoken uncle is a good cook.  While I was back east, I enjoyed, from his efforts, a grilled steak, BBQ Chicken, pork loin and hash, as well as collard greens.  He is famous in the town for his smoked pork loins, BBQ chicken and his fried turkey.  If you don't believe me, just ask him.  He preps these things for folks all the time, actually.  Sometimes, family functions get in the way and we get the accidents.

My aunt used to be known for her birthday/special occasion cakes.  Now she believes herself to be known for her "famous" sourdough bread.  I live in the Bay Area and I know from sourdough.  What she makes is more like a sweet french bread.  That's right.  Her starter has sweetened.  Next time I go to SC, I'm taking a loaf of sourdough bread with me to refresh the memory of her tastebuds.

DR Emily, how were your classes?

Thanks for asking, LC :D

Class #1 = Sociolinguistics with Dr. Charles Boberg (aka Mr. Mary/Merry/Marry himself)

It sounds very interesting but he warned people at the beginning of the class that those of us with no linguistics background might have some difficulty (i.e. ME... the profs get an electronic copy of all their students' background faculties and earlier classes taken to peruse and Boberg made SEVERAL references to a student with a Poli. Sci. background... oy)

We get to do field work which sounds fun though.  I may need to phone up some foreign kimlets/hainsies and record your voices saying weird phrases or words... like "marry/merry/mary" :)

Class #2 = World Religions 1 (AKA Death and Dying in a fun flying trip around five major religions in fifteen quick weeks!)

I actually already took this course in CEGEP.  With the same teacher.  Who recognized me sitting in class and went "WHAT THE F**K?" in true post-modern religious studies teacher fashion.

I talked to her after class in which she laughed and told me to take it anyway since I pretty much NEED it for my minor.

Tomorrow I have Canadian Church History, Canadian Public Administration and 20th Century European Politics to look forward too... we will see how those go...

The prof doing 20th Century European Politics got a sexy chile pepper in his reviews on ratemyprofessor.com... I will have a FULL report tomorrow (McGill students have had very good taste in the past...)

Just for the record, 'tis I who took that photo of der Brucer on the lake.  I kept it with me at work, safely in my desk (most everyone was cool, but there were a few over the years who didn't know how).

I'm also to blame for the photo he's using as his avatar, taken the same day as the lake pic.  We were on vacation in Germany, on a day trip in the Alps, when we spotted some of our fellow travellers off on a peak just a hundred feet away.  It looked like fun, and the view promised to be spectacular.  So off we went on the trail, two bears (or, at that point, a bear and his cub) climbing the mountain to see what they could see.

Had we realized that the climb over to the other crest involved a very narrow trail about the width of a gymnastic balance beam, a single rope to hold onto, and for one part of the trip a ladder made of railroad spikes that had been pounded into the mountain rock, we would have thought twice about that journey.  One slip and we would have made it faster down than either of us would have cared for.

Personally, I do prefer the lake shot, although the mountain shot makes der Brucer look remarkably butch!

The shot of us with the former Speaker of the House is more typical of how der Brucer reacts to a camera, wide eyed and frozen.  (And yes, the Speaker knew we were a couple when it was taken.  He had been trying to pull der Brucer closer by the back of his belt.  Der Brucer joked "Careful, we're members of Log Cabin," to which the Speaker replied "That's OK, my reputation's already shot!")  (No idea who the woman in the middle is.)

Dear Der Brucer: as long as you're posting pics from Long Beach, can you find something, anything better of me?  Other than the baby pictures?  (And one of these days, you're going to have to write down the golf ball story and post it!)

Noel, how many zoos have you visited in the past?

It's kind of a comparative thing.  Same trip as the photos, for example, der Brucer and I visited a zoo in Munich, which was absolutely wonderful.

On the other hand, I don't recommend the Fresno Zoo.  You'll all have to trust me on this one.

The National Zoo in DC was less interesting than we'd hoped, save for the lion exhibits, where the lions and tigers were separated from the humans by large moats.  Der Brucer's older grandson, Alex, who was only three at the time, thought those moats were absolutely fascinating...because a family of ducks was swimming in one of them!

I'm not a big zoo fan, personally, because there's really little to do except watch the animals, who are usually too worn out from having nothing to do but watch us all day.  If there was some kind of interaction going on, things might get interesting, but zookeepers usually like to keep track of the diets of those they tend to, and random hands and arms are hard to guage when it comes to calorie intake.

Yes, I heard there was some dear doctor in there who wouldn't open his yap.  Why DO they bother, I wonder.  I wonder as I wander and I wander as I wonder.  All I know is when I arrived it was quite sparkling in there and all manner of things were discussed.

I got my box set of The Cat People, I Walked with a Zombie and The Leopard Man today.  This particular company does the most beautiful packages, but I'm afraid their transfers aren't quite as good as they should be and vary wildly from disc to disc.  Their Magnificent Ambersons is sadly not good at all.  That said, The Cat People looks pretty good, and I Walked with a Zombie looks even better, but The Leopard Man, while taken from a nice print, is soft throughout.  Still, it's nice to have them on DVD.  There are some scenes from other films they've done box sets on, including Top Hat, which looks a bit soft but not bad at all, and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, which looks better than its American counterpart on DVD.

I'm going to quickly post to say that I'm a terrible judge of comedy; I go into a theater with a chip on my shoulder the size of Washingtion, which reads, "GO AHEAD - - MAKE ME LAUGH!" So very rare films have made me laugh heartily out loud in theaters, or on home video.
Those that did, though, are cherce:
DUDE, WHERE'S MY CAR?
MOULIN ROUGE
WHAT'S UP, DOC?
MONTY PYTHON'S MEANING OF LIFE
MONTY PYTHON'S LIFE OF BRIAN
MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL
AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT
TOOTSIE

BRINGING UP BABY
YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN
BLAZING SADDLES
8 LEGGED FREAKS
SINGIN' IN THE RAIN
HERCULES (Disney)
MEN IN TIGHTS
BORN YESTERDAY
THE FIRST NUDIE MUSICAL
LOVE AND DEATH
EVERYTHING YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT SEX. . .
ADAM'S RIB
to name but a few.

Onstage:
LUV
THE PRODUCERS
SCARMBLED FEET

And, a special note for all the Dear Readers in and around New York City:

Friday, January 9th at 10:00 pm and Saturday, January 10th at 7:30 pm, Richard Skipper will be presenting his show "Broadway's Grand Dames."  Performing with their own voices as legendary ladies from Broadway & the concert stages are Holli Vest as Tina Turner, Anne Kissel as Roseanne, Janet Fanale  and her many voices, and Richard Skipper as Carol Channing. $20

Good evening.

Rehearsal was good.  Short.  And good.  We mainly concentrated on two scenes - and two songs.  They got a lot of new changes and pages over the weekend, and tonight was the first work-through of some of the new material.  Also, the "real" musical director is back from his other gig, and he was trying to get back up to speed - which was very easy.  *And if i get the charts done for the some of the songs by tomorrow, I can actually head back home to Richmond on Wednesday.  YEAH!  So, if I'm errant and truant tomorrow - or even later tonight - you know what I'm doing.

On the way home from dinner, I stopped a middle-Eastern carry-out place - I think it's Pakistani - actually.  I wasn't in the mood for a kabob - although this place does kabobs very well - so I got some curry, a sambosa and a nan (bread).  Sooo good.  And sooo surpringly spicy!  It kind of caught me off guard. Now, I like spicy, and I've food from this place many times, but I did not expect so much cayenne pepper in my food.  It was still very good, just spuh-icy!  -At least I had the coriander-yogurt chutney to cool the heat.

I stopped in the chat for a bit.  Too many Washingtonians.  Isn't there a rule about too many PNW-ers in one place at the same time?  ;)

In any case, chat was fun, but I had to cut in order to catch up my e-mails as well as the posts here on HHW.

So...

I'll check back later...

And, DR Panni, your story literally made me LOL!

Oh and re: those people who are offended when DRs mention their karma loss.  I think those who want to mention it should feel free to do so (it does let others restore it if they want to).

Oh and am I the only one who would rather someone have the guts to say they disagree with me?

Btw, why is it that speaking my mind nicely will most certainly lower my 40 karmas. :)

Oh well. Good night all. Hope you had a good chat and that everyone wakes up on the right side of the bed (except for DR TCB who I bet will say that his bed is against the wall on the right side) :)

Actually no, my dear Jennifer, I keep my bed an equal distance from both walls thereby carefully framing it in the wall of mirrors.  Someone told me that mirrors make things look bigger, but, so far, I can't even fool myself.

td, that picture is adorable! If I had a scanner, I'd scanner in the mor-or-nin. I'd scanner in the evening, all over this la-and. I'd scanner out da-anger! I'd scanner out war-arning! I'd scanner out love between my brothers and my sisters a-all over this land. (There is no groaning here at HHW!) My point is, I do not have a scanner, so I cannot post old or new pictures of myself on here. ::sigh::

I think I just messed up the lyrics to this song, too...how dumb can I get? :)

Jed--ahaha you think I'm tangled in a web of lies. I assure you that is not the case. The Grease picture (Sarah and me) was from a cd of pictures I discovered among my music cds. Yup.  Of course, we weren't shown everything that happened.  You never know because of the editing that they do.  Yesterday on VH1 (I think), there was a show about the behind the scenes of the so-called "reality" shows.  I wish that I had seen the whole thing, but what I did see (about the last 20 minutes) was pretty interesting.
