Title: THE SYMPHONIC NOTES
Post by: bk on April 22, 2007, 12:15:03 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had movements, and now it is time for you to post until the symphonic cows come home.  Their conductor is Zubin Moohta.

i think partly because the fireplace is downstage center covering the conductor so no one can see him for their cues. Miss Kitt had a moment this afternoon where she just stopped and the conductor should have brought her back in but she couldnt see him. too bad.

I watched last night several episodes of a BBC series MILE HIGH.  The jury is still out on how I liked them.

THOUGHTS FOR THE DAY

Quote
I Owe It All To My Mother

1. My mother taught me TO APPRECIATE A JOB WELL DONE. "If you're going to kill each other, do it outside. I just finished cleaning."

2. My mother taught me RELIGION.
"You better pray that will come out of the carpet."

3. My mother taught me about TIME TRAVEL.
"If you don't straighten up, I'm going to knock you into the middle of next week!"

4. My mother taught me LOGIC.
"Because I said so, that's why."

5. My mother taught me MORE LOGIC.
"If you fall out of that swing and break your neck, you're not going to the store with me."

6. My mother taught me FORESIGHT.
"Make sure you wear clean underwear, in case you're in an accident."

7. My mother taught me IRONY.
"Keep crying, and I'll give you something to cry about."

8. My mother taught me about the science of OSMOSIS.
"Shut your mouth and eat your supper."

9. My mother taught me about CONTORTIONISM.
"Will you look at that dirt on the back of your neck!"

10. My mother taught me about STAMINA.
"You'll sit there until all that spinach is gone."

11. My mother taught me about WEATHER.
"This room of yours looks as if a tornado went through it."

12. My mother taught me about HYPOCRISY.
"If I told you once, I've told you a million times, don't exaggerate!"

13. My mother taught me the CIRCLE OF LIFE.
"I brought you into this world, and I can take you out."

14. My mother taught me about BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION.
"Stop acting like your father!"

15. My mother taught me about ENVY.
"There are millions of less fortunate children in this world who don't have wonderful parents like you do."

16. My mother taught me about ANTICIPATION.
"Just wait until we get home."

17. My mother taught me about RECEIVING.
"You are going to get it when you get home!"

18. My mother taught me MEDICAL SCIENCE.
"If you don't stop crossing your eyes, they are going to get stuck that way."

19. My mother taught me ESP.
"Put your sweater on; don't you think I know when you are cold?"

20. My mother taught me HUMOR.
"When that lawn mower cuts off your toes, don't come running to me."

21. My mother taught me HOW TO BECOME AN ADULT.
"If you don't eat your vegetables, you 'll never grow up."

22. My mother taught me GENETICS.
"You're just like your father."

23. My mother taught me about my ROOTS.
"Shut that door behind you.  Do you think you were born in a barn?"

24. My mother taught me WISDOM.
"When you get to be my age, you'll understand."

And my favorite:

25. My mother taught me about JUSTICE.
"One day you'll have kids, and I hope they turn out just like you."

Unusual day of TV a bit.

CBS' procedurals (COLD CASE and WITHOUT A TRACE) are preempted by the Dean Cain movie CROSSROADS.

ABC has a new episode of DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES but a repeat of BROTHERS & SISTERS.

Of course, there are new episodes of THE SOPRANOS, ENTOURAGE and THE TUDORS.

And RENO 911!, of course.

Monopack Technicolor was introduced in 1949, but three strip Technicolor continued to be used until 1955 for certain films.

Speaking of HIGH:

Shelbourne Development Ltd. / AP

An artist's rendering shows the base of the 2,000-foot twisting spire planned for Chicago.

The 150-story tower, designed by Spanish-born architect Santiago Calatrava, would feature 1,200 residences.

If the project wins approval of the full City Council, construction would begin this spring.

Well, the Beach answering machine piped up at 9:15 with a plaintive plea for Woody to hie it in to wrangle etc. and to work a full 8 hours.

He is now "fustigating" over the fact that the management overlords have decreed that four/five of the check-out lanes are to be converted to self-service check-outs. That might work OK in area that has a stable base of customers who can learn the new ropes; but in a store whose clientele is seasonally transient, probably unwise - half the shoppers have trouble working the dang charge card machine without clerk assistance! (Of course idiot programming that tells the customer to "Press OK" when there is no "OK" button doesn't help.)

Glad to hear it, DR Ginny.  I had intended to offer you my travel vibes, but you're already home before I even had the chance!

Thanks, anyway, DR singdaw  ;) .

Here are some factoids, compiled by our wonderful local arrangements chair, about the just-concluded event:

As of 2pm, Thursday, April 19, we had a total of 109 people signed up to participate in the events this weekend:

68 people for Friday, of whom 10 are presenters or guests and 5 are Tiffin branch members here solely to help, giving 53 participants.

94 people for Saturday, of whom 2 are presenters or guests and 4 are Tiffin branch members here solely to help, giving 88 participants.

We have had 4 cancellations.

Of the AAUW/Ohio people here, there are 27 board members, 65 delegates, 10 past presidents, 8 vegetarians, 2 people with allergies to wheat, others with allergies to rice, cinnamon, pears, milk, hot & sweet peppers, and 2 people who are diabetic.

82% have e-mail accounts.

We have earned degrees from at least 62 different colleges.

None are using the Ohio Challenge (50% fee waiver for registrants ages 20-40).

Presenters and guests are coming from Texas, Kentucky, Wisconsin, New Jersey, the Washington, DC, area, and a few from Ohio.

And, we anticipate a profit ;D .

I haven't mentioned it before because I did not want to get invested emotionally again, but we had another bird birth - same nest as before, above the outdoor light.  This time, four babies were born (I saw all four of their gaping maws being fed by mum and dad).  None of them seem to have perished (the first time this happened there were three and one of them didn't make it and the mom just discarded the dead bird on the patio - lovely).  As you know, the last birth did not have a happy end - the baby birds finally took flight and flew right into the pool.

So, after having done everything anyone could do to make them comfy that first time around, I was quite annoyed when the flight wasn't successful.  This time, I just refused to get involved, although I was careful about not scaring them or disturbing them.  Well, they took flight yesterday - two of them went directly into the pool, but the other two seem to have made it, and since I hear lots of birdsong out there since that event, I'm going to say that it was a successful birth this time.

April 22: Young Filipino ballet performers jump over pieces of wood on a grassy lawn of the Cultural Center of the Philippines to mark Earth Day in Manila. Organizers said the wood with holes, which symbolize trees toppled by illegal loggers in much of the Philippine countryside, serves to remind people of the danger of the country's rapidly dwindling forest resources due to illegal logging.

Is this about what I think it is, or do I just have a salacious mind?     :o

You're only partially wrong; it's a series about a group of 20-somethings working as stewards and pilots on Fresh! Airlines that commutes between London and Europe.  It's quite funny, and quite melodramatic and raunchy.  I've watched seven episodes of the first season so far.

I gave it one more viewing last night before deleting it from Tivo.  Act III is wonderful!  And enough cannot be said about Sada Thompson!

I want to re-read the play, but I was shocked to find that my copy of Wilder plays is gone from my library.  I need to make a trip to Barnes and Nobel this afternoon to pick up a copy.

How did TSoOT end up on your TiVo?  Was it recently rebroadcast on one of the cable channels?

Quote
A number of readers have taken issue with my characterisation of public defenders as incompetent.  Which is not quite what I mean to say.  PD offices have multiple problems:  too many cases for each attorney, no money for help to sort through records or expert witnesses or extra tests, and the leak of experienced attorneys out of the system to places that pay better.  That doesn't mean the attorneys are bad; it means they often don't have the resources to mount a competent defense.  Private attorneys, at the level the poor can afford, possibly even more so.  Race is a problem in the justice system, but class dominates race, which is why OJ got off, and a number of poor white defendants don't.

Since that first date, the pair have shared nights out at Manhattan's Gramercy Hotel's Rose Bar and the "21" Club, attended the Super Bowl in Miami and gone skiing in Sun Valley, where they stayed at the home of casino mogul Steve Wynn.

"Perlin is a nice guy," says Couric's friend. "He's extremely smart. He's honest. He doesn't play games. He's sweet. Normal. Really grounded. It's a drama-free relationship."

I spent the first part of the afternoon with LUCKY ME starring Doris Day, Bob Cummings, and Phil Silvers. No, I didn't like the movie any better than I have in the past though it's innocuous enough. It just amazes me that Fain and Webster wrote this glorious score for CALAMITY JANE, one of the greatest composed for a film musical, I think, and then turned out this turkey with no memorable songs. They are functional, and a couple seem better than they are because Doris punches them across ('The Superstition Song," "The Bluebells of Broadway"), but the movie is pretty much a dud.

The transfer has great color (even if it is WarnerColor), but it was grainy, and Warners got stingy with the aspect ratio chopping it off a bit on the sides and thus almost losing Doris and/or Nancy Walker in a couple of numbers because the frame was so cramped.

I'm sure it should have been transferred at 2.55:1 and this looked like 2.35:1.

Finished up the afternoon watching some MAUDE episodes from the first disc in the set. I watched the first episode (I don't think it was a pilot; Norman Lear sold the show on the basis of Bea Arthur's guest appearances on ALL IN THE FAMILY as Maude). I looked up the review for the play and we decided to not even go. My feet get restless and hot at plays I don't like and I have to take my shoes off. I have no idea why. That's how I review a play: whether or not I have to take off my shoes.

We went for lunch instead at a pasta restaurant where I ate too much good food.

DtM, Singdaw, TCB & Sandra-Thank you for the much needed vibes.

I wish I had gotten on a plane to L.A. two days ago.  Unfortunately Keith has to stay with Sherlock & we had no idea this would go on for so long.  And now I won’t be going.  The timing is so difficult since I have to leave soon to meet Craig back east, and there is much I have to do first.  I know there isn’t a whole lot I can do there except sit with her, I’m not doubting her care-thank goodness.  However, a familiar face might make a difference, and it would be a comfort to all of us if I could spend the days in ICU with her.

Singdaw you are right, we need a break here.  I can only hope Craig’s transition goes smoothly & I have him set up in an apartment before I leave Pittsburgh.  Before I leave home I will be asking for more vibes, hold them for now-got enough on our plate for the moment, that Craig’s dog handles the long flights to the States & passes the vet inspection without getting dumped into quarantine.

No wonder we haven’t been sleeping-too many things to worry about these days.

'Law & Order' Future Still Undecided (http://news.aol.com/entertainment/tv/articles/_a/law-and-order-future-still-undecided/20070419064809990001)

Quote
LOS ANGELES (April 19) -- After more than a month of negotiations, the future of ratings-challenged NBC crime dramas "Law & Order" and "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" is still uncertain.

This week began with a flurry of rumors Monday about the cancellation of the mothership series, which is in its 17th season.

After an in-person meeting between representatives for the series' creator, Dick Wolf, and NBC later that day, the fate of the show was moved back into the "undecided" column. Talks between the two sides are expected to stretch into early May before a final decision on the two series is made. (The franchise's third series, "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," was picked up for next season in January.)

You betcha:

I got a $478 quote for a Ford Freestar - three days.

Weekend days are extra-expensive, the drop off fees are huge, and Dulles has a 10% tax plus a !0% Airport Fee.

Just a thought: it might be cheaper to ditch the crate, let the pooch ride loose, and rent a economy car.

Der Brucer-Thanks, it is sweet of you to look.  Right now I’m on Orbitz. Thrifty has a
Dodge Caravan-mid-size van $229 week. I wonder what the difference is between the Caravan & the Freestar.   Before I book anything I will have to call a dealership & ask them to measure the space for me, maybe even go check one out.

Ditching the crate might be a possibility, I will find out how much it cost & see if it is worth it.  A crate will likely be needed at the new apartment.  I think Yogi has always been crated in the car & we aren’t sure how good he will be if left loose.

TCB-right.  I might call to confirm as I need to be sure the dimmensions are with the seats down.  I'm also concerned I can sit comfortably in a van, so far I have never been in one I liked.

We had a good matinee today - good energy, good audience.

And since there were only four people in my van back to the city today, James - a.k.a. The Hunky Driver - we were all able to be dropped off at our door.  Bonus!

And once I got home, I took one load of laundry to the laundromat up the street to get dried - one of my roomies washed some heavy blankets which would have taken hours to dry here (it only took 35 minutes (4 quarters) up the block) - and I started a load of my own laundry.  Then after getting some other things in order, I went ahead and did something I haven't done in a while: I cooked dinner.  :)  Swordfish steak, cubed, and sauteed in olive oil with garlic and oregano.  Very yummy.  And very healthy too.  Then it was time to wash the dishes, start another load of laundry... yadda-yadda-yadda...

DR Jane - I'd suggest looking into renting a van from U-Haul or another moving company.  Even with the one-way rental, you may actually get a better rate.  Alas, you'd also have to figure in the cost of gas right now... :-\

The trick is door opening! (The crate will fit in most cars, just might not get thru the door - the advantage to a sliding side door mini-van!)

The $229 price included Pittsburg drop off and Dulles taxes/fees?

Have spent my day watching movies -- great big emotion-walloping movies:

"Meet Joe Black"
"Out of Africa"

Yesterday afternoon, I watched the wonderful "Bagdad Cafe" and the terrific 1964 musical "Unsinkable Molly Brown" and replayed several numbers numerous times.

Watched the "Heroes" marathon on NBC, as well.

I was intrigued that ABC aired "Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone" in High Def.  Watched bits of it during "Heroes" commercials, but was totally stunned with the entire quidditch sequence.

Jane, all dimmensions should be available at the Dodge website.

Not the critical door-opening pass thru!

Passanger doors usually do not open a full 90o

However, the Caravan has sliders plus a rear hatch-back.

ROTFLOL-I doubt very much I could drive anything from U-Haul.

Hey, you just said you have a van  ;D how about taking a trip to Pittsburgh.  ;)

Actually, U-Haul has some regular vehicles now, at least in vans.  Additionally, I've found that Enterprise has some pretty decent rates on van rentals.  *And there are tons of U-Haul rental locations in NoVa.  I'm sure a hotel shuttle would be more than happy to drive you to one.

I don't recall mentioning that I have a van, however, if All About Us does not extend, I plan on being down in DC that week.  I think.  So... I'll keep you posted.

*And if you do need some help getting around "locally", I could always check with one of my brothers.  They both live near Dulles.  And they both have SUVs (since they both have children and dogs).  ;)

Thank you for reminding me to confirm with Craig which way the crate opens.

I've also found it helps to call the rental company to confirm the rate.  Most online sites don't list the taxes since those are "local".  And those taxes can add up.

Additionally, are you planning on renting the vehicle at IAD?
Title: Re:THE SYMPHONIC NOTES

That's very curious. It did not air in HD on the East Coast. In fact, ABC even put up a disclaimer that said the film was modified from its original frame and cropped to fit standard TVs. I turned it off a few seconds later.

DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES had a fun episode with various secrets coming out in the open. The episode started just a bit slow for me but picked up and was thoroughly entertaining by the time it ended.

I finished my evening with the rerun of BROTHERS & SISTERS. I loved the episode that introduced Jason Lewis as the soap opera star who slowly began to fall for Kevin, and this was that episode. They had a very rocky six episodes or so, but I'd love to see all of them again to chart the course of that relationship.

Anyway, I'll have to catch them this summer since it appears the show goes back to fresh episodes starting next week for the rest of the season.

As you know, the last birth did not have a happy end - the baby birds finally took flight and flew right into the pool.

i had a similar experience. A nest was built in my chimney and the babies fell into the grate. I dumped them into a wicker basket, carried it back to the roof and wedged it into the chimney top. I wired an umbrella to a metal pole that used to hold the TV antenna to protect them from the elements. So they were back in as much as the same situation as I could manage,

The wildlife center said I needed to feed them them in case their mother didn't come back, so for several weeks I dug up worms and mixed them in the blender with raw egg yolk. (This is what the nature center recommended.) They let me feed them, so 5 or 6 times a day I climbed the ladder and fed them, until one day I saw the mother bird and some droppings and knew they were probably fine.

I never saw them fledge, but one day they were just gone. The following summer, I found that some of them had landed on the part of the roof I had recently tarred. I hope one or two of them made it, especially after all that work!

I never used the blender pitcher again, BTW.

I tried deciding what to write about THE GLORIOUS ONES, other than the fact that I thought it was gripping pretty much from start to finish, with resonance to modern audiences while remaining true to its story's roots in the Commedia del'Arte (sp?), but couldn't figure out what details would not be spoilers for people who will see it.  So many lovely twists and turns, the critics are sure to spoil great moments just by description, but let me just say that i had a grand time, dare I say it a glorious work.

Some of us hang aroung and do the heavy lifting

We have done heavy lifting the last two days. After clearing brush and privet with my trusty Weed Wrench: http://www.weedwrench.com/ in preparation to take down the old horse barn at the end of our property, we moved over a ton of marble (at least 60 big blocks) which was in this barn for some reason.

There were also dozens of cinder blocks and bricks to be moved. Just as we were about to give out, our little French boy appeared and pitched in and we were done soon after. Hooray!

Better was the episode where FLorida Evans (Esther Rolle) was introduced to the family. Love her, and she and Bea Arthur had great timing in their various exchanges. She was really a scene stealer.

Esther Rolle was in the first movie I worked on. She was really nice!

On saturday night in Pittsburgh, after a visit to the South Side, I went with Ann (of All That Chat) to an excellent production of Ntozake Shange's Broadway smash of decades ago, FOR COLORED GIRLS WHO HAVE CONSIDERED SUICIDE WHEN THE RAINBOW IS ENUF.  Strange thing:  The prodcution seems to  deliberately discourage applause for the first 20 minutes or so in the placing of its sound cues, and we were led to believe they didn't want us to applaud the individual moments throughout the show.  But talking to someone at the theater after the show, some nights, the applause has happened for certain individual moments.  The applause was great at the end, but I hope the cast didn't think during the show that we were a bad audience.  The staging was just confusing at the outset on whether it was OK to applaud during the show.

DR FJL - Just in case you're still skimming the posts... Since I'll already be up in Westport Tuesday for the 10:30am school matinee, would you and DR elmore like to come up earlier to grab a bite to eat up there?  Or would you like to come in closer to show time?  Alas, DR singdaw will not be able to join us for dinner.

And if you would like to come up for dinner, should I go ahead and make a reservation at the Dressing Room?  It's "on campus", and would save another cab fare too.  *The cabs in Westport are more expensive than they are in NYC.  And since train fare is already involved with the excursion...

Like I mentioned before, I've always loved Omni Hotels.  Did you sign up for their Select Guest program?  The regular perks are even nice.

*And if you want a really nice splurge, I highly recommend the Omni Berkshire Place on the East Side.  Very, very nice.  And if no one happens to be in them at the time, sometimes they'll give you a peek at the full-floor suites.  The Rodgers & Hammerstein suite is truly luxe.

**And some of their weekend rates in the summer and winter (January) are pretty comparable with some of the midtown mainstays.

From www.omnihotels.com:

Rodgers & Hammerstein Suite: Features 1,000 square feet of living space, including a walk-out, wrap-around terrace, “presidential” work desk, decorative fireplace and additional half-bath and spa tub.

Now that's nice!  :)

Is this the new musical by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty??  I can't wait for this!  I found a clip of Patti LuPone singing the song "I Was Here" on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOf-DWwVQYQ) and had the song going through my head for a week and a half...literally!  And then I found that the song is in "The Ahrens & Flaherty Songbook (http://www.amazon.com/Ahrens-Flaherty-Songbook/dp/0757900925/ref=sr_1_1/102-3762568-1656134?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1177304332&sr=8-1)," which was published in 2001!  I want to hear the rest of the score. :D
