Good morning, all!  At 6:30 AM, I was wide awake but at 7:30 it was time to sleep for another hour.

Okay, my plans for the day: make a date with the Shubert Archive, make telephonic calls about my dad's estate, write some more editorial guidelines, settle times with DR FJL for our trip tomorrow to see DR JoseS..

DR JoseS, the Dressing Room sounds fine to me, if it's ok with DR FJL.

TOD:  When are we going to do another "I want on DVD" or "I want on CD" list or something? I thought I was too good for exploitation films; and now that I've discovered it an art form beloved by DR MBarnum, I see I was right all along.

TOD:

From Wickipedia:
Quote
Exploitation film is a loosely defined term to describe a film genre that typically sacrifices the traditional notions of artistic merit for a more sensationalistic display, often featuring excessive sex, violence, and gore.

I suppose American Psycho and The Passion of the Christ would qualify?  I have seen neither, and I would say that I'm probably dispositionally unsuited to such material.
Title: Re:THIS VERY DAY
Post by: Dan (the Man) on April 23, 2007, 06:30:17 AM
TOD:

I tend to think of exploitation movies as films made as cheaply as possible for the sole purpose of making a quick buck on a current trend. I normally eschew these kind of movies, but I do have a few guilty pleasures:

CLEOPATRA JONES
LADY IN A CAGE
CITY ON FIRE

Probably more as I think of them...

Last night, I was finally aware that THE TUDORS is playing a little loose with the facts: they've combined Princesses Mary Tudor and Margaret Tudor, sisters of Henry VIII, into Margaret Tudor, and confusing the facts of their very different relationships with Charles Brandon.  More loose history about the sisters and Brandon but I won't spoil the episode, which was quite wonderful.

Thanks for the info. Since I'm not nearly as in the know about the facts as you are, it may not bother me much, but it has made me curious to step up my knowledge of Henry VIII. And, I guess, that's one of the great things about a well produced TV biography. It makes one hunger for more information.

The "Snap, George!  It just went snap!"  was the first acting scene I ever did anywhere.  I was talked into it by this girl in a Junior year acting class in high school.  I had no idea what I was doing and I was sort of blown away by the girl, who seemed to know exactly what she was doing.  It wasn't until a year later that I discovered that our school had a copy of the cast recording in our library and that she had learned off of it, inflection for inflection.  Grrrrrrrrr...

ANIMAL HO-HO TIME:
Quote

HOW TO BATHE A CAT

1. Put both lids of the toilet up and add 1/8 cup of pet shampoo to the water in the bowl.

2. Pick up the cat and soothe him while you carry him towards the bathroom.

3. In one smooth movement, put the cat in the toilet and close both lids. You may need to stand on the lid.

4 The cat will self agitate and make ample suds. Never mind the noises that come from the toilet, the cat is actually enjoying this.

5. Flush the toilet three or four times. This provides a "power-wash" and "rinse".

6. Have someone open the front door of your home. Be sure that there are no people between the bathroom and the front door.

7. Stand behind the toilet as far as you can, and quickly lift both lids.

8. The cat will rocket out of the toilet, streak through the bathroom, and run outside where he will dry himself off.

9. Both the commode and the cat will be sparkling clean.
Sincerely,

OPERA ALERT:

Many local PBS television stations will be broadcasting Eugene Onegin from the Met this coming Thursday night.

It looks like all those operas that the Met has been simalcasting to movie theatres are also being shown on PBS.  I haven't been to any of the movie house showings, but I've been hearing nothing but raves about them.

Thanks for the info. Since I'm not nearly as in the know about the facts as you are, it may not bother me much, but it has made me curious to step up my knowledge of Henry VIII. And, I guess, that's one of the great things about a well produced TV biography. It makes one hunger for more information.

I didn't want to write anything more since I didn't want to spoil the episode for you!  I wish Disney would release THE SWORD AND THE ROSE aka WHEN KNIGHTHOOD WAS IN FLOWER with Richard Todd as Charles Brandon and Glynis Johns as Mary Tudor on DVD.

I loved the episode last night.  It was quite gripping and I'm happy the series has been renewed.  A couple of years ago, while I was working on a musical about King John and the Magna Carta, I began Alison Weir's books on Elizabeth I, and I read her books on the children of Henry VIII, and the six wives while I was working on a concert, and scoring cut numbers from the show, of Richard Rodgers' REX.  Last night's episode of THE TUDORS had the perfect cue for Henry to sing "Away from You."

I'm now reading her book on the Princes In The Tower and leafing through her book on Henry VIII and his court.   The bio of Elizabeth was truly wonderful and quite moving at the end.  I recommend all of them.

If it's any comfort, I believe the 12(?) year-old who won last year's AMERICA'S GOT TALENT sang everything inflection by inflection that she'd learned off the recordings.

THE AMAZING RACE SPOILERS from last night's show
*
*
*

RE: DR cillaliz's question about whether Danielle and Eric would have been eliminated if they had come in last (since they were marked for elimination).

This has never happened before, so i don't think anyone really knows for sure.  I don't think we usually see 2 non-elims in a row.

However i would speculate that they would NOT have been eliminated if they had come in last. As stupid as it sounds, non-elimination legs are planned in advance. So it would not be fair to have D&O not eliminated, while D&E would be in the same leg.

They often have non-elims after yields. So i guess they decided to just do this and hope they didn't look stupid (if D&E had finished last but not been eliminated).

I really thought last night's episode was going to be charla's quote, "well we're not all perfect" (referring to mirna).

The one thing at the start of the episode that bugged me was when they showed the times. Last week they showed C& M in a neck to neck race with danielle and eric. Yet the times showed that E&D were something like 2 1/2 hours behind them.

I am all for exciting good editing. But am i the only one who wants to see things as they really happen? I don't like words being taken out of context. And i don't want to see race to the finish that is only a race based on editing.

I have a feeling last night's race to the finish was not all that close either. I mean charla and mirna had to do the noodle task twice and mirna had trouble with her car. And that only put them 15 minutes behind eric.

So my bet is danny and oswald finished more than the few minutes behind the editing implied.

DETAILS, please....

I can't be too specific because it's all so related to income on the estate.  He's being quite difficult about everything, from the large loan my dad gave his company and my attempts to settle it amicably (oy!), and since Lady M is a liar as well as a lush, it's hard to know when they claim they're not receiving my emails ranging from travel dates to what I've been doing for the estate, how much is true and how much is a lie.

So, there's a small pension from a union to which my dad belonged of $6000 to be paid to the three of us.  We had to submit signed applications and a copy of our social security card for payment.  Last Monday, I was told by the union that the hold up was M, who didn't sign the application he sent in.  The union sent him another on April 10.  Last Monday, I sent my brothers an email stating this and asking if the application had been signed and returned.  Today, the union still hadn't received it, so I asked them to send the ass another.

Well, now he claims he signed it yesterday but he isnt sure it's been mailed.  And since the amount is so small, why should he bother? Well, first of all, since he tried to get me removed as executor, I feel it's only fair to my brothers to prove that I'm capable of fulfilling my estate obligations and if I have to sue for this tiny amount of money or for the large amount he owed my dad, well, it's all part of my job.

Lady M told my sister-in-law Jo that there's no proof of the company owing my dad anything, which means she probably destroyed the canceled check while he was staying with them.  I've asked his bank to send me his banking records from 2002 to 2006.  Oy!

To suggest that Stanwyck never belonged in the first rank of screen beauties would be ungallant but true. To argue, however, that she lacked a ready supply of male victims would be demonstrable nonsense. She had cheekbones of a wicked cut and curve, archable eyebrows, and a nose whose beaky hauteur came in handy when she rose to playing the loftier classes, or, as in “The Lady Eve” (1941), slicing them to shreds. It was a face that launched a thousand inquisitions: the mouth too tight to be rosy, and a voice pitched for slang, all bite and huskiness. When I think of the glory days of American film, at its speediest and most velvety, I think of Barbara Stanwyck.

I like Dan the Man's definition of an exploitation film - and classic exploitation films seem to have disappeared completely after the 80s, when Corman really stopped distributing them.   Lurid subject matter (no matter what genre), on the cheap, ads that made the most of the luridness, played a week then gone.

Russ Meyer made exploitation films.  Roger Corman made them.  AIP lived on them.

That recent Quentin Tarantino movie GRINDHOUSE was a joke as far as being a throw-back to exploitation movies.  How could an exploitation movie cost as much to make, feature a cast like that and be so expensively publicized?

The real joke is that the Meyer and Corman movies were a fraction of the budget and made a heck of a lot more cash.

Keith’s brother has his faults, but he is honest & has integrity.  We have been back and forth on the phone & communicating while their mother is in the hospital.

He called us this morning after a difficult conversation with her & was upset she wasn’t making sense & accusing him of something last night that, of course, never happened.

We had a nice talk with her today about an hour later & got it all straightened out.  She had had a very realistic night mare.  I suspect the nurse was adjusting the IV & Mom was struggling.  In her imagination, and without her hearing aids on, she thought the nurses were laughing while hurting her & Keith’s brother was just watching.

For once the brother’s aversion to hospitals worked to his advantage, it was easy to convince Mom that he was not there, would never stand by while someone abused her.  With that knowledge it was easier to convince her that the rest was a bad dream, or night terror.  It helps that she has found the nurses to be very nice

Singer Sheryl Crow and environmentalist Laurie David have been traveling across America on a two-week Stop Global Warming College Tour, which winds up today at George Washington University. Crow and David (co-producer of the documentary "An Inconvenient Truth" and wife of "Curb Your Enthusiasm's" Larry David) have been touting their cause and chronicling their travels in a rather idiosyncratic blog. Here, on Earth Day, are a few excerpts:
...
Crow (4/19, Springfield, Tenn.): I have spent the better part of this tour trying to come up with easy ways for us all to become a part of the solution to global warming. Although my ideas are in the earliest stages of development, they are, in my mind, worth investigating. One of my favorites is in the area of forest conservation which we heavily rely on for oxygen. I propose a limitation be put on how many squares of toilet paper can be used in any one sitting. Now, I don't want to rob any law-abiding American of his or her God-given rights, but I think we are an industrious enough people that we can make it work with only one square per restroom visit, except, of course, on those pesky occasions where 2 to 3 could be required.

Crow (4/19): I also like the idea of not using paper napkins, which happen to be made from virgin wood and represent the height of wastefulness. I have designed a clothing line that has what's called a "dining sleeve." The sleeve is detachable and can be replaced with another "dining sleeve," after usage. The design will offer the "diner" the convenience of wiping his mouth on his sleeve rather than throwing out yet another barely used paper product. I think this idea could also translate quite well to those suffering with an annoying head cold.
...
The cure is worse than the disease!

Here is the STORY (http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/nationworld/2003677131_rove23.html) I found on it.

And women use more than men! So global warming is the Women's fault!

The entire problem of tree-loss due to paper consumption is easily remedied with replanting.

Paper products are bio-degradable.

Ms Crow's rediculous "dinner sleeve" suggestion would require laundering and all the energy that entails.

Want to reduce the use of fossil fuels - then stop using hot water! (A national ban on chain-saws, power mowers, and leaf blowers would help!)

Wonder if Ms Crow uses launderable sanitary napkins?

"BAN PAPER PRODUCTS" - try that slogan in rural Oregon!

RE:  Last night's AMAZIN' RACE

***  SPOILERS   ***

I was surprised that it was Danny and Oswald who the Blondies made the Yield deal with, but then, really, who else could it have been?  But again, I'm surprised about the angst D&O put themselves through about the deal.  All that talk about Karma!  The Yield is a part of the game!  Do these people get upset about collecting rent money when they play Monopoly?

Didn't it seem that the editing was a little skewed against the Blondies?  The slightly catty remark to Mirna when she pulled up to the tall building ("Your hair looks nice!") and then showing the two of them going up to Eric & Danielle at the mat and blatantly lying about the Yield deal.  Mirna and Schmirna were shown to be only bitchy towards each other (well, Mirna was piling it on Charla, anyway...)

And it wasn't much of a leg last night, either.  Just the Detour, the Roadblock and then the Pit Stop.  But at least for once there wasn't an airport involved...

But what really yanked my chain last night was it being another non-elimination round.  I don't remember there ever being more than three non-elims in a race before.  It does make me suspicious of the producers manipulating the outcome as the race plays out.  And yeah--what would have happened if Eric and Danielle had come in last?  I guess we will never have the answer to that one.

DR George, this song is also on Philip Quast: Live from the Donmar.

I found this out during that week and a half that the song was going through my head!  I got the CD (and I like it), but i don't care for his version of the song as much as Patti's.  It seems to me that it needs to be more anthem-like and his interpretation is a little too introspective...not "big" enough.  Just my 2¢. :)

Hypothetical Help for the Technically Challenged:

Would a region-free DVD player, hooked up to regular non-HD television in the US, be able to play a PAL-format foreign DVD?

 :-\

Thanks!

Yes...if it says that it can play (or be adjusted to play) PAL DVDs also.  There are some DVD players that can play any regions, but only if they're NTSC.  PAL vs. NTSC is different than the region codes.

The stupidest decision the Weinsteins made in this entire endeavor was releasing both features with their trailers together in one three plus hour film. No exploitation film ever ran so long. And Tarantino  was smart enough to release KILL BILL in two parts. Each feature in GRINDHOUSE - the Rodriguez one and the Tarantino one - should have been separate releases.

Lunch got a very late start this afternoon, so I only had time for two programs once I got back.

My friend John just bought that Rodgers & Hammerstein movie boxed set, and he loaned me the 40th Anniversary SOUND OF MUSIC out of the box so I could compare it to my Five Star Collector's Edition.

I watched about 30 minutes of it. The color seemed rich, perhaps a tad more saturated than the Five Star Edition. The image is a tad softer, however, than the Five Star version. Perhaps the artificial edge enhancement Fox used on the Five Star edition makes the difference in sharpness. I'm not sure. But I think the Five Star looks just the slightest bit digital as opposed to the more film-like 40th Anniversary Edition.

Personally, I'm glad I didn't trade for the new one. I will probably rebuy THE SOUND OF MUSIC one more time when it is remastered for Blu-ray. But that will be it. Until then, I can live with the version I have now.

I completed my afternoon with last night's THE TUDORS. Yep, DR elmore, I loved it, too. Just the male eye candy alone is worth watching the show for, but the plots, intrigues, and fascinating characters are just riveting. Wouldn't think of missing a second of this.

Needless to say, in high definition, this show is splendiferous! Really astonishing colors, fabrics, and props that look hyper-realistic. It's a visual feast!

Yes, AAUW Executive Director, Michele Wetherald, was at our conference on Friday and announced that there would be heavy press coverage of:

Behind the Pay Gap (http://www.aauw.org/newsroom/presskits/payGap.cfm)

I would accept a broad-based conclusion that women, as a class, receive less pay than men for similar jobs.

However, before I can accept the more detailed conclusions I need an understanding of how data are normalized for unbroken years on the job.

Because many women take time off to build a family, they will always be behind the curve in earnings compared to men their own age. Also, because second-earner women are more likely than men to take "satisfying" jobs, they will again fail at an age-to-age comparison with men.

So, I believe that there always was, is, and always will be, indeed, should be, a wage gap between Men and Women. That said - I still suspect that there is an unreasonable, unjustifiable wage gap which requires action. I wonder how well this report addresses these issues.

When I was managing defense projects for Hughes Aircraft I raised holy hell when some gal was assigned as a software designer to my team - I didn't want to have to cope with managing some engineer wanna-be. (I was also notorious for my foul language tirades at project meetings!) I put management on notice that though I couldn't stop the assignment, I sure as hell was not going to cut her any slack - she was going to be treated as one of the boys - fish or cut bait. On my very next project, I again was saddled with a gal from software engineering - and grumble I did. On a third project the same damn thing happened. I was furious - I marched over to the VP in charge of software development (who was a bridge playing crony) and asked him why the hell was I the dumping grounds for his lady engineers. He broke out in a big grin, "Because, Bruce, my best female engineers request to be assigned to your team." "Why the hell would that be", I queried. "Because they say you treat them as equals, challenge them to be their best, and they can learn more from you than from any other project engineer". So now what is a MCP to do?

Sometime later there was an opening in our Project Office for a Project head - one of the leading candidates was another gal from software engineering. The boss said no way did he want to hire her -she had no hardware expertise. I explained that that was no a big deal, it was my project, and I'd rather have her SW expertise - I could crutch her on the HW issues. No deal - No women! So, who gets the job - a dimwitted male SW type, with zero HW expertise, and not the will nor wit to learn. I spent years wishing for my ladies back!

OY!

The house in the glen is aroar!

The dogs are very upset with the nextdoor neighbor (who bulldozed every growing thing off his wooded lot, then put up his gulog, and trucked in rolls of country club golf course grass mats to do his yard). The groundskeeper is now out there with a roaring power mower trimming the stuff - and the dogs are angry! The only good that comes of this is the din drowns out Sean Hannity yelling with Al Sharpton on TV. He keeps his lawn quite lush - all those fertizer chemicals wash right down the slope and into the protected wetlands that form the rear of our property lines. Oh well, who cares about nature conservatories...let the Blue Herons and least-terns and  go elsewhere

My neighbors do not like my idea of natural gardening- they want all the lovely dandelions lining the front wall murdered and they despise the blackberry vines returning to the side yard.

Study: Pay Gap Between Men and Women Starts Right Out of College
Monday , April 23, 2007
NEW YORK —

Women make only 80 percent of the salaries their male peers do one year after college; after 10 years in the work force, the gap between their pay widens further, according to a study released Monday.

The study, by the American Association of University Women Educational Foundation, found that 10 years after college, women earn only 69 percent of what men earn.

Even after controlling for hours, occupation, parenthood, and other factors known to affect earnings, the study found that one-quarter of the pay gap remains unexplained. The group said that portion of the gap is "likely due to sex discrimination."

"Over time, the unexplained portion of the pay gap grows," the group said in a news release.

How much inquiry did you make into this laptop before buying it?  Please don't tell me it came in a Crackerjax box or you got it with trading stamps!

PS Safe flight, DR MBarnum!

I suspect the salesman was Indian, Pakistani or Egyptian...  Or 80-years old.  ;)

Oh boy, is it hard for me to get any work done.  My schedule is fairly light this week and I have lots of trouble getting things done when there isn't much to do, but when I know that I probably won't be here for the end of most of these cases, it's really hard to get excited about them.   I'm doing what needs to be done, but since my heart really isn't in it, I'm just going through the motions and that feels very strange.

So...

Why Should Never Bring In "I'm The Greatest Star" To An Audition:

1) Barbra Streisand's version is basically definitive, and what most pianists are familiar with.  So, as long as you "sing it like Babs", then there's nothing to worry about in regards to timing out some of the jokes between phrases.

2) Alas, if you "sing if like Babs", then you're simply doing an imitation of the "original".

3) And if you try to be original, well, then don't shoot the pianist any attitude for not knowing where your "hits" are.

4) And then if you end up doing a combo of "Babs" and "your own thing", well... More power to ya'!

*The above guidelines apply to "Cornet Man" too.  :-\

Glad CDs are arriving.

I myself received a rather large and imposing package from Brazil today - I'd forgotten it was coming.  And in this package, sent by a friend who now lives there, were a whole slew of DVDRs of films that are simply not available anywhere else.  But not only are they DVDRs, they are all 16x9 anamorphic transfers - while the few that I've sampled are not quite up to DVD standards, a few of them are better than transfers made by certain companies - all of them are sharp and more than acceptable - frequently excellent.  Some of the titles are Pepe (looks incredible), Freud, The List Of Adrian Messenger, Commanche Station, Ride Lonesome, Mickey One, These Are The Damned, Lost Horizon (the musical), Good Neighbor Sam, and the one I'm watching now, Alan Pakula's Love and Pain and The Whole Damn Thing, which I've never been able to see before.  There are others, too, such as Once More With Feeling, The Running Man, Interlude, The Pumpkin Eater, Sunrise At Campabello, and Bowhani Junction.  Fun, huh?

So...

If you happen to come in today with your six-page song copied onto three double-page-folds... And then look over at me at the piano wondering why I haven't started playing your intro yet...

"I'm just trying to arrange your music so that it won't fall off the piano, and so that I can get the page turns.  So, if I end up dropping notes, just keep going."

-Oh, I'm sorry you have to do that.

"Well, it's your audition."

-Alas, that last comment was tinged with a bit of 'tude, and not so under my breath.

Just what makes them "Marcelled"?

From Ballreich's website:

"The term "Marcelled" was applied to the Ballreich potato chip early in the history of the company. During the early 1920's the "marcelled" look was popular in hair fashion. Women at that time had their hair cut short and then set in waves. This wavy-look resembled the corrugated cut of the Ballreich potato chip. Ballreich's chips have been "marcelled" since that time, but the term has not yet been recognized by the potato chip industry."

Sort of like the r-r-r-ridges in R-R-R-Ruffles.

Spamalot opened just over two years ago on Broadway.  The OCR has been out for almost the same amount of time.  The Vocal Selections have also been available for a while...

So, you are most definitely not the first person to come in with "Find Your Grail".  And don't be disappointed when you find out the people behind the table aren't impressed by the fact that you are actually going to perform the song.

Jose, I used to take piano lessons and you will be proud to know that almost EVERY time that I've had a vocal audition (or performance), I've made absolutely sure that the pianist has music that is as easily playable as possible.  I've even double photocopied pages that have repeats and removed the repeat marks so that there would be no back page turning for the pianists.  I'm not a great singer, but I am good to the accompanists. ;D

And then there are the singers who "over prepare" their music, and make sure there are no page turns for me.  In a nine page song.  So, I end up getting one, very long accordion fold of music precariously perched on the music stand of the piano.

Music comes in books.  Page turns happen.  Better to spend your time and money giving your music to another pianist before you go into your audition.  "So, can you read this?"

Finally, a lovely sunny day!  Since we couldn’t go anywhere on Keith’s birthday, and today is the 41st anniversary of our becoming a couple (also our official first date), we took Sherlock into town for a walk and then had lunch along the creek.

During lunch the manager, or owner, of the restaurant came outside to say hello to Sherlock and comment on how much he has grown.  He also said the town has plans to incorporate the outside walkway, which includes the outside dining areas for a row of restaurants & a weekend seasonal artisan fair, into Lithia Park.  Lithia Park doesn’t permit dogs.  One restaurant along there already has banned dogs, they blame the health department (not Jose).  If the day comes that we can no longer enjoy outdoor seating with Sherlock we just might up and move to a more dog friendly town.

And then there was the young gentleman who was in the second group...  He brought in a nice arrangement of "Real Live Girl".  A sort of up tempo.  Alas, all of his pages were "loose", and printed on "cheaper", flimsy copy paper.  I ended up grabbing a couple of the pages and placing them on top of the piano so that I could read them - and so that they would not keep falling off - while he was singing, while I was playing.

Alas, he seemed to oblivious to my efforts to ensure that he had a good audition (experience).  -And he also had the rest of his "book" with him.  In a binder.  ???

Jose I’m sorry your day was frustrating, but it does make for entertaining reading. ;D

:)

Thanks, DR Jane.

It was just a weird/bad day from the start.  The casting director's assistant had told me and the casting director that today's session ran from 10:00-6:00.  Hmm... Normally, an EPA at Equity will run from 9:00-5:00, or 9:30-5:30.  Never 10:00-6:00.  (They usually start shutting down the lounge at 5:30.)  Nope, we're running from 10:00-6:00 on Monday.  So...

My train downtown was running very slow, so I didn't get to the audition until about 9:52.  I wasn't late, just a little closer to the start time than I usually like...

Are you set to go?  Or do you need a second to get settled
"Just give Jose a second, and then you send in the first group."
OK - The first couple of groups are pretty light, so you should be able to catch up.

-I played my first audition at 9:55am.  Whew!

Hmm...

Well, after a couple of groups went...

"Were we supposed to start at 9:30 instead?"
Yeah, I'm sorry.  I had the times wrong.
-And don't worry about it, my train was late too.
"Oh, OK."

And the day just kind of went from there.  We did "catch up" within the first hour, and lunch seemed to come sooner rather than later.  That's always nice.

I made a few along the way.  But, frankly, I was a bit snippy, and basically kept my mouth shut since I knew I would come across as "not helpful". :-\

George, I'm starting to think that maybe Callie is too good for George...not you...George O'Malley.

She probably is, but he seemed to have just gotten over all his issues with Meredith and then he tries REAL HARD to fix things with Callie, and then ALL OF A SUDDEN he's interested in Izzy and totally blowing off Callie??  He's never been that much of a jerk and T.R.'s not playing him as a jerk.  For me, it's the writing that's going in the wrong direction. :-\

...At least I was done at 5:30 instead of 6:00... And there were two or three "WOW!" auditions today too.  Those are always nice.  And, sadly, much to rare nowadays.

To celebrate my "early dismissal", I walked from 46th up to 74th, stopped into Levain (Chocolate Chip Walnut - although, I really wanted their Artichoke Heart and Gruyere Thin Crust Pizza, which they were sold out of for the day), then proceeded to walk up to 96th to catch the 1 Train the rest of the way uptown.

OH!  And the abuelita who sells tamales had tamales dulce today! They were died a bright red/pink - almost like a red beet, and had raisins.  Paired with one puerco con chile verde, they made for a very satisfying dinner.

Frankly, knowing how "sensitive" some of the actors and actresses are, they probably would have gone right around the corner to complain.

...And don't get me started on the fact that the two strings on the piano that were replaced two weeks ago, still have not been retuned and regulated since then.  Your Equity dues at work!

Well, the getting drunk and sleeping with someone inappropriate to get over someone else is pretty much a theme of the show.  Izzy and George were very good friends before they ended up in bed.  The last episode could be mending the friendship and not more than that - depending on where it goes from here.  I think Callie was a total rebound for George and I will be surprised if they last no matter what happens with George and Izzy

Keith’s mother is finally out of ICU.  She still has an IV & isn’t permitted liquids or food, maybe tomorrow. The pain meds have been reduced from every 3 hours (no wonder she was so loopy) to every 6 hours.  She sounds much better  , although I think she will miss the extra attention from the ICU nurses.

She said there are lots of windows in her room, which is exceptionally nice after so many days in a room with no windows and lights on all the time.  She has a TV and the phone is attached to the bed.  She answered right away when we called.  We really timed it well, within minutes of her getting settled into her new bed.

Thanks again for all the vibes.

Fun, huh?

Oh my God!  Armageddon

So...

Spamalot opened just over two years ago on Broadway.  The OCR has been out for almost the same amount of time.  The Vocal Selections have also been available for a while...

So, you are most definitely not the first person to come in with "Find Your Grail".  And don't be disappointed when you find out the people behind the table aren't impressed by the fact that you are actually going to perform the song.

...And, please, please, please, don't try to sound like Sara Ramirez when your voice and vocal range comes no where near Ms. Ramirez's instrument.

Despite the fact that they did not have the refrigerator in the room as I had requested and the garbage can was full of garbage and there was a dirtly plate sitting in the desk...but my Buddhists teaching are telling me to accept it all. LOL!

DR JoseSPiano, you truly are the energizer bunny...

Or a timex watch.

Amazing!

Well... Actually... Frankly, I think I'm getting a little burned out right now.  It truly has been non-stop for the past couple of weeks - ever since my trip down to Atlanta for SETCs.  I'm booked for a couple of audition days next week, and I'm thinking of "exchanging" one or two of them for a "mental health day".  Especially if All About Us does end up extending.  (Which, hopefully, we will find about tomorrow.)

I had planned to head out to dinner tonight with a friend, but after the day of auditions, all I really wanted was a nice walk, a cookie, and a quiet evening at home.

I have the last week of May totally free right now, and since I haven't seen Alexandra, John Michael, Alyssa and Emily in a while, I'll probably going to head down to Fairfax for a couple of days.  -And I'm missing Emily's - my god-daughter - first birthday party this coming weekend, so...

Maybe you don't look trustworthy.

I'm not sure either.  An extra week of work is always nice.  And the cast and crew of All About Us have truly become one big family by this point.  Alas, the daily commute is getting to me - that's basically "half" my work day, and, frankly, we're all getting paid a nice wage, but it's not "scale", so...  I make more money - Can you say rent? - playing two days of audition than I do playing a week of shows up at Westport.  (Sorry for the full, partial disclosure.)

In honor of Mr William Shakespeare I watched sections of A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM (1981) from the BBC/PBC Complete Works of Shakespeare with Helen Mirren and Peter McEnery as Titania and Oberon.  The lovers were wonderful, quite funny, and their fight in the forest was the funniest staging I've seen.  I didn't know the ladies but Demetrius and Lysander were played by Robert Lindsay of ME AND MY GIRL and Nicky Henson.

It's such an amazing play, completely tangled, yet everything falls together beautifully, and the language is amazing.  The imaginative score, sounding late 17th-Century, was by the late Stephen Oliver who composed the score for the Royal Shakespeare company's NICHOLAS NICKLEBY.

CBS Sunday Morning has a nice piece on Joel Grey and his photography. I really liked what I saw!

The B-roll showed Joel Grey wandering around Venice, CA, snapping photos. He was in that area where there are canals. Every time I see that in a movie or TV show, I think "I have to find out where that is!" And then when I'm in LA, I forget to try and find it. It looks so lovely!

Tonight I watched a very interesting doc called The Promise of Iowa http://www.iptv.org/promise/ It's about the refugees Iowa took in from southeast Asia after the Vietnam War.  Funny, I didn't realize what we did was unique. I also didn't know we are the only state that to this day still has a refugee resettlement office.

One of the validictorians of my high school class in 1979 was a refugee from Vietnam.

When I got back inside from mowing the grass, I settled back in with the 40th Anniversary SOUND OF MUSIC DVD for about 20 more minutes. The sound is rich and full for a 5.0 soundtrack, but during near-silent moments, I heard a low hiss on the audio track! That astonished me. Surely they could have cleaned that up and gotten rid of the hiss.

In the mail today was the Ultimate Edition of DR. NO sold apart from the rest of the James Bond set it came with and which I won in an Ebay auction for very little money (it's a two disc set).

I was THRILLED with the sparkling clean picture and the monumental DTS sound upgrade they've given this movie. Though one or two scenes had an undersaturated look to them, most of it is just beautifully realized with both picture and sound. I watched the whole movie in one sitting and could not have enjoyed it more. Compared to the laserdisc and previous DVDs of DR. NO that I've owned, this really did seem like a brand new movie.

In honor of Mr William Shakespeare I watched sections of A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM (1981) from the BBC/PBC Complete Works of Shakespeare with Helen Mirren and Peter McEnery as Titania and Oberon.

What a coinkydink!  I watched the Shakespeare In The Park DREAM from 1982 that had William Hurt as Oberon and a fantastically funny Christine Baranski as Helena.  I haven't seen this in years and I had forgotten how much I enjoyed it.

Edisaurus, i lived in Venice for several years, but not on a canal street. I would have liked to have seen it in its heyday. When I lived there it was sadly neglected. It's become quite trendy, I understand, and I recently saw an ad for a house on a canal for $3M! The canal section is near the ocean--you should be able to find it easily on a map.

For those of you curious about who this guy is, here's the caption next to the picture on the website I was led to after searching for images under the parameters of "Musso Frank" on Yahoo:

Big Frank Musso  , my grandfather from Thibodaux, Louisiana, was one of those individuals people never forget. A big man, he was dwarfed only by the size of his heart and the impact he left. He was a volunteer fireman for over 60 years, served as President of the Louisiana State Fireman's Association and had a remarkable career in law enforcement at both the state and local level. He made me laugh every single time I was with him and is the biggest influence on my own sense of humor. But his humor is only a fraction of the tremendous contributions he gave to me; he touched every single part of my life.

So, here's to Big Frank -- a man with a good sense of humor, and who I hope will symbolize the fun and good senses of humor that will be present tomorrow.

Another LA restauranteur had Murphy-like roots:

Quote
Cobb, of Irish ancestry, came from a Western background with his father being a sheriff and hotel manager in Hardin, Montana.  His father ran a hotel, a train depot, and a number of bars.  His mother would hold a cowboy hoedown on a regular basis.  His parents were the proprietors of the only bathtub in the area and would rent it out for 25 cents a bath.

Is this how the Murphy fortune was started?
