TOD: First news group--The Little Criminals, which is a Randy Newman fan site. I've been E&T there for about 6 months though because of the many flame wars between members. It just wasn't worth it to wade through that much negativity to find the good stuff. Some other members left for the same reason. But I check in from time to time, in hopes that it will return to its former glory. Needless to say, the short story YOUR WORST NIGHTMARE from DIRTY BOOK resonated with me.

I made a lot of great friends there and still keep in touch with them. I'm even friends with some of the flamers, but boy, the internet can bring out the ugly side of some people! It's nice to be here, where seldom is heard a discouraging word. I don't know if it's because we have a moderator who actually moderates, or if it's the people who are drawn here (probably both) but it's a relief to see that a site can exist without its members devolving into immature chidren "acting out"!

When I was in LA a few weeks ago, I got to see quite a few of the Newman group, including DR BrettySpaghetti and Dear Friend Susan. I'm glad Bretty has joined in (he was already a fan of Bruce's CD's) and I hope Susan will de-lurk and join us, too!

First website visited: Jadebox.com (a Harry Nilsson website--but now I only go there for info) and eBay, which I occasionally visit and place bids.

Original IBM PC used an Intel 8086 Chip (PC-XT used an 8088)

The next generation was the IBM AT  using the Intel 286 chip; followed by the 386, then the 486, then the Pentium series.

AT was IIRC the first Windows capabae machine.

TOD -

First group I was ever with was over at Sondheim.com.  That's where someone had a daily column called The Real A.  I can't be bothered with that group any more - the fellow who was in charge of the site let someone else take over, who was a real bully.  That, and der Brucer also started posting there, under a pseudonym, and when that finally leaked everyone refused to believe that I hadn't known who he'd been.  (Der B can keep a secret.)  It was well worth my while to wash my hands of the whole group.

Tomorrow - April 25 is ANZAC day. It is one of the few days upon which Australians actually do stop and think about their history and reflect upon that elusive "National Identity". It is of course significant to the NZ part of the name as well.  The day is also of great sifnificance to the people of Northern France and Belgium and a major "service of rememberence" is held at Turkey's "Anzac Cove".

I don't remember the very first Web site I visited. It may have been the

NAMES Project (http://www.aidsquilt.org/)

since at the time I was a very, very involved volunteer.

I also visited our own (Foundation Center, that is) Web site

FC (http://foundationcenter.org/)

I was part of a bulletin board for a while in the early 90s. It was called The Male Stop. It no longer exists.

Now I have a full set of bookmarks to visit including sites like Playbill On-Line, TDF, the New York Times, 365 Gay (a LGBTQ news Web site based in Canada)

365 (http://www.365gay.com/)

and many other sites, including an obscure little site based in California. It has something to do with a fictional tennis star called Guy Haines  ;)

Gotta go and wash that bowl.

Later, gaters.

I can remember the first dial-up bulletin boards I accessed, along with the first portals (such as Prodigy, AOL and GNN), but I'm not sure what the first "World Wide Web" sites I visited were.  There was something theatre based, before PlaybillOnLine or Broadway.com came into existance, but I don't remember the name of it.  It was primarily text--very few pictures.  And there were a few Comic Book sites as well.

I need to pop on over to a meeting right now.  When I come back, I'll do a rant and rave about rec.arts.theatre.musicals.

I got my first computer in 2001, so I guess the first sites were my publisher's, eBay, and Google, since I was primarily using the computer for emails, reports, and research into BABES IN TOYLAND.  In 2003, Liz Callaway mentioned that BK had this site, and I've been around since January or February 2004.

The theatre will go ahead and make sure a cab is "set aside" for us after tonight's show to take us back to the train station.  -And that will be four of us all together?

DR JEANNE - music in a dream usually means things are going well......

Thank you, JRAND. I don't usually remember my dreams, but I recently had one with music in it--my first, I think.

To all of you--do you often hear music in your dreams? Is this a common occurence?

This reminds me of a time when I heard Michael Maguire perform live at an outdoor event in Williamsburg, VA.  He was singing "If Ever I Would Leave You," and when he got to the bridge, the melody was WAY off - I mean, clashing with the orchestra off.  I thought, OK, momentary brain freeze.  But when the bridge returned, he did it again - and I thought: OK, the guy learned the song wrong, and no one has corrected him!

Hmm.. I think I may have been at that same concert.... Hmm... Howl long ago?  Fourth of July or something like that?

I believe it was July 4th, yes...probably about 5 to 7 years ago?  In the streets of the commercial area near the entrance to Williamsburg proper?

I had my first computer in 1985 and within a year or two, I had a modem (300 baud which I quickly replaced with the fast 600 baud model) and was on a network called Fidonet. There were many dozens of newsgroups on FIdonet, and I was heavily involved in two of them - GREASEPAINT and FILM. Eventually, I became the moderator of both of them. GREASEPAINT was a group of gay men who talked musicals of stage and screen (this is where I first met up with DR Michael Shayne). FILM was exactly what the name suggests it was and by far one of the busiest forums on Fidonet.

ABC is showing the BOSTON LEGAL episode that got preempted last week.

CBS has new episodes of NCIS and THE UNIT before rerunning a crime drama at 10.

NBC has a new DATELINE before reruns of both LAW & ORDER shows.

First news group--The Little Criminals, which is a Randy Newman fan site. I've been E&T there for about 6 months though because of the many flame wars between members. It just wasn't worth it to wade through that much negativity to find the good stuff.

The LC site was where I met one of my dearest friends, Joan, who opened up a whole new universe of good music for me. But there have been some WEIRD people on that group as well. The flame wars have never ceased to puzzle me. The same is true about the Usenet group AFCA (alt.fan.cecil-adams), the other group I have participated in heavily. It's the group centered around the writings of columnist Cecil Adams, who writes "The Straight Dope." Fascinating and informative column, but if you think the LCs have a lot of nuts, you should see THIS group!

I think the common denominator seems to be about politics. Political topics have so greatly divided us these days that we've become ticking time bombs. You'd think that a group made up of Randy Newman fans would more or less be on the same page politically -- after all, this is the guy who wrote "Political Science," a sendup of the "let's drop the bomb on everybody who isn't us" mentality. But no, even Randy can evidently attract a group with incredibly disparate views.

For a long time, my reasoning was that it's only too easy for a lot of these people to flame words flying across the screen. The personal element is missing -- who could flame DR Amy after meeting her charming self in person? But no, I can name a bunch of people from the LCs who, even if they've met you and seen that you're a first-rate kinda guy, will still stab you with their poison pen, or keyboard, or whatever. It's a little disillusioning.

As an editor, I could almost endure the flame wars if everybody could learn to just. Freakin'. Spell.

The inflamed -- often enraged -- passions of a "flame response" do not lend themselves to a serious stab at proofreading...even if such an act would -- in many cases -- result in corrected spelling.

"Spelling" should be on the endangered subjects list in basic education.

My first website message board was WORDPLAY, a site where aspiring and professional screenwriters mixed and mingled, run by pals, Ted Elliott & Terry Rossio (Pirates of the Carribean).  I rarely go anymore because I pretty much said all I have to say about screenwriting on it.
Title: Re:MORE ABOUT THAT LATER
Post by: Ron Pulliam on April 24, 2007, 09:07:49 AM
My first internet site was a "Lois and Clark" discussion group.  Shortly after I began posting there, I added myself to a "Due South" discussion group.

Through a series of odd posts, I found myself defending Danny Elfman's original score to the original "Batman" film in the wake of someone who said Elfman's score should have been scrapped in favor of more Prince music.

Sigh.

My response resulted in a private e-mail from a fellow in Canada who directed me toward a discussion group called "filmus-l" where I suddenly found a "home".  I posted there for many years, mostly happy ones.

As Bretty knows, there are always a few "floaters" even after you've flushed, and some of these floaters popped up again and again, driving folks away.  Filmus-l used to be very active, very thought-provoking and had an international membership.  Many folks left.  Some broke off and formed a private group with explicit goals of excluding certain "floaters" who fancied themselves the end-all/be-all to the subject of film music discussion.

This group remains active, if a bit unfocussed.

Another great site I found was a messageboard at the Film Score Monthly site.  Many friends have been made there (and the main "floater" from filmus-l occasionally poisons the water there, too...but not so much any more).

Additionally, I found myself one day straying onto rec.music.movies (a Yahoo? discussion group, IIRC).  It was interesting, even though one poster there named Guttke presumed to "own" the site and passed judgement on every discussion going on.  It was there that one Bruce Kimmel encountered me in one of my verabl duels with Guttke and invited me to HainesHisWay.com.  This was the day after the 2002 Academy Awards broadcast (for films of 2001).

I've also spent time at the MovieMusicMessageboard but found it to be, on the whole, jejune.

Oh, yes, I found it jejune.

I also joined some theater discussion group...the one where Stephen Newport seemed to malinger 24/7, posting to every thread and commenting on every post.  Very tiresome.

So it's HHW.com (in abbreviated lingo) and FSM Messageboard where I hang my hat these days.

CONCUR! And I don't proofreading was ever emphasized. As a manager, I've seen some of the worst--and often humorous--examples of typos, wordos, etc. Sincere young people, trying hard to get a job, but presenting themselves so poorly due to their lack of attention to their language skills. Sad, really.

I got Web TV back in December of 1997, I think (or 1998, can't remember) - I had a computer at Varese but it was ancient and we had dial up and my few attempts to get online never worked.  We got the Web TV box set up and working by the end of my birthday party, and then I was up all night playing with it.

The first things I found (other than the few websites that had shortcuts that were listed in the manual) were the Usenet newsgroups rec.arts.theatre.musicals and rec.music.movies, where I lurked for awhile before jumping in and posting.  I also discovered the Usenet film groups, the ones referenced in Your Worst Nightmare.

But I think the first actual website that I found (and I can't remember HOW I found it) was eBay.  I discovered eBay right away (it may have been in the manual) and once I did, I was hooked.  I bid on anything and everything.  In those early days, it was so weird and fun, but I didn't know what sniping was and they, of course, had no sniping in those days.  Also, the site was still basically being run by its owner, and there were a lot of problems with crashes.  You could still get personal (rather than form) responses back then.

I did find the sondheim.com site because Mr. Mark Bakalor called me at Varese one day and told me about it.

I think the common denominator seems to be about politics. Political topics have so greatly divided us these days that we've become ticking time bombs. You'd think that a group made up of Randy Newman fans would more or less be on the same page politically --

What has been lost is the art of polite discourse - it's no longer about ideas, it's about people - if I disagree with your opinion, I must attack you. A sense of humor helps (as Larry will tell you, I've been known to post some pretty funny stuff that is very far afield from my personal beliefs).

Stereotyping political views based on artistic tastes is tricky. While I was a Midshipman, my bookshelves were filled with poems by Ferlinghetti, plays by Sarte, and stacks of LPs by Joan Baez and Peter, Paul and Mary. My Magazine stack had MAD as well as National Review. While steaming in the Gulf of Tonkin, in between supporting bombing runs, I would listen to Judy Collins and Tom Lehrer.

Is it any wonder I ended up a Gay Republican?

der Brucer

I gained an interesting insight into political discourse on my first ship as an officer. A fellow young Ensign was a Harvard graduate who had been a member of their Progressive Youth Group (or some such Maoist coven); we could not have more diverse political views. However, when it came to practical action, we both generally agreed - coming from opposite directions, we regularly met in the center to agree on a public policy for the best: as long as we argued "what" and not "why", we could agree.

I'll let Dan-the-Man speak more completely about rec.arts.theatre.musicals but I have been to that newsgroup as a lurker. DTM was a poster. With some exceptions a sorrier group of angry, bitter, unhappy people would be difficult to find. At the drop of a hat you would be flamed in the most vile terms, many times for just expressing a differing opinion. That site has some cyber bullies of major proportions. They claim to post because of their love of musical theatre but they seem to enjoy the trashing (especially of newcomers) more than anything. One of our former DRs, Noel, also posted there and the attacks on him and DTM were egregious. Yes, you need a thick skin on the Internet and you should be able and willing to brush off some idiot who spews garbage but come on! "Spelling" should be on the endangered subjects list in basic education.

I think we've passed that challenge with the Grandlads - Alex regularly pipes up with "Grandpa, how do you spell..." and often uses his dictionary. "Caring" is main ingredient in learning.

Original IBM PC used an Intel 8086 Chip (PC-XT used an 8088)

The next generation was the IBM AT  using the Intel 286 chip; followed by the 386, then the 486, then the Pentium series.

AT was IIRC the first Windows capabae machine.

Good Afternoon!

Well... We had an amazingly wonderful 10:30AM school matinee.  The 400 (give or take a few) high school students had to have been - well, they were - our best audience, so far.  They got everything. And the things they didn't get... Well, they weren't meant to be gotten.  They were quiet. They were attentive.  They did not start squirming at the two hour mark.  The laughed at the good jokes.  And they let the not so good jokes just go.

The three young ladies who sat in the front row - right behind me - summed it up the best: "This is freakin' amazing."

Hip-Hop Mogul Russell Simmons: Ban 3 Racial, Sexist EpithetsTuesday , April 24, 2007

NEW YORK —
Hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons said Monday that the recording and broadcast industries should consistently ban three racial and sexist epithets from all so-called clean versions of rap songs and the airwaves.

Expressing concern about the "growing public outrage" over the use of such words in rap lyrics, Simmons said the words "bitch," "ho" and "nigger" should be considered "extreme curse words."

Plus Dominic Cooper and Jamie Parker (he's my favorite History Boy) in a towel!  Alas, not the same towel, but in a towel nonetheless.

*And, I have to say, I was mightily impressed by the musical and pianistic skills of the cast of The History Boys.  I was sort of disappointed that Jamie Parker's piano playing was not represented on the movie soundtrack.

Actually, I would have gotten a "Blizzard".  Now if I were in Los Angeles right now, I would have gotten a "Freeze" from "Foster's".  Although, I do like a good ole hot fudge sundae every now and then, and even just a plain ole Dip Cone is good too.

Alas, since I will be dining with DRs FJL and elmore in a few hours, I decided to forego the DQ trip this afternoon.  -They were also planning on stopping at Compo Beach today too, which would have put my return to the theatre a little too close to the dinner reservation.  So...

Right now, I'm enjoying the air-cooled comfort of the Green Room, and "Little Miss Sunshine" is on in the background.  -They have a nice flat-screen TV here.

I've gone ahead and secured a cab for tonight just to be safe.  If we can visit for a short while in the parking lot, then that would be great.  If not, then next time.  And I don't want you to feel rushed or obligated to leave your other function tonight.  -Besides, I'll see you tomorrow night.  :)

-I just hope we start as close to "on time" tonight as possible.  Last Thursday, due to seating issues and special introductions during the curtain speech, we did not start the show until 8:16 - which meant we did not come down until 8:29.  That made for some frantic cab rides to the train station apparently.

I found a hotel (residence inn) near Carnegie-Mellon that accepts dogs.  One hotel down, two more to go.  I hope we can make the trip from DC in one day, I had to make a decision when to begin the hotel reservations.

If Craig's flight gets in on time, and customs doesn't take too long, you should be able to get on the road before the major rush hour crush.  Pittsburgh is about four and a half to five hours away from DC, and most of the trip is on I-270/70 and I-76/376.

If you don't want to feel rushed, I'd suggest just taking your time at the airport.  Maybe grab dinner nearby, then get on the Beltway around 6:30 after all the bad traffic is over.  That should get you up to Pittsburgh by 11:00 with less aggravation.

Next, I watched TWO AND A HALF MEN. Ordinarily, this show is not my cup of tea, but there was a gay-themed storyline last night, so I tuned in. Typical gay panic among the boys when they meet a man married 16 years who realized his same sex orientation.

There are so many sexual jokes thrown around on this show, it seems like 80% of the dialog veers in that direction. I'm not a regular viewer, but I'd think this would get old season after season.

SUnday night's ENTOURAGE had the nice version of Ari having a meldtdown because he wanted to fire someone and couldn't summon up the meannness to do it. Funny stuff with another totally winning performance by Jeremy Piven. It wouldn't surprise me a bit for him to win his second Emmy this year for this role.

I spent the majority of the afternoon, however, watching the 1979 Japanese film VENGEANCE IS MINE. I had never seen it before, and yet its storyline could have been an American one: a charming ne'er-do-well lies, cheats, swindles, and finally commits murder for no good reason except he's angry with the world and does things his way. There are five people killed during the film, three on camera in very brutal fashion (think the necktie strangling in FRENZY or the brutal killing of the man in TORN CURTAIN - all in-your-face murders) and the two others are revealed in cold blooded fashion that were just as disturbing. At over two hours, it's a long road to not much revelation about the killer's psyche, but that didn't make it any less absorbing.

I also watched the few special features that were on this upcoming Criterion disc: an interview with director Shohei Imamura and two trailers that were very effective in presenting some of the horrors of this smiling psychopath.

Still proofing, but have also shipped a big order (store) and picked up a package.  I may take a break now and watch some more of the motion picture Freud.  I've got Freud in the living room DVD player and Lost Horizon (the musical) in the bedroom DVD player - can we say it's so schizo?  Does anyone have the running time of the uncut version of the musical?  Years ago, it was "restored" for laserdisc, but the person who "restored" it is notorious for putting back pieces that were never there - i.e. trims, things that were never in any release version, etc.  For 1776, he "created" an overture that never existed and was never MEANT to exist.  I have the laser but I can't get to it at the moment.  So, if someone has that info that would be great.

"Les Miserables' (twofer with 1935 and 1952 versions)
"Jane Eyre" (Welles/Fontaine)
"The Queen" (Helen Mirren)
"Sailor of the King" (Jeffrey Hunter/Michael Rennie)
"Action" (all 13 episodes of the acclaimed, yet cancelled, Fox TV series about the wacky banalities of Hollywood).

This is one of my favorite TV comedies. I'll never forget Jay Mohr, playing an insidious movie producer, telling Scott Wolf to "Go back to Party of Five Foot Two."

It's a bit scarce, but I recommend it to Menken fans. I can't say I enjoy it quite as much as Beauty and the Beast or Little Shop of Horrors, but it belongs in any Menken fan's collection. There are at least a couple of really outstanding songs on it. And it stars Ellen Greene from Little Shop!

Tonight, we have a mix of old and new on TV. Fox, of course, has new episodes of IDOL and HOUSE.

ABC is showing the BOSTON LEGAL episode that got preempted last week.

CBS has new episodes of NCIS and THE UNIT before rerunning a crime drama at 10.

NBC has a new DATELINE before reruns of both LAW & ORDER shows.

THE SHIELD is new, of course.

I would be interested to know if there is anyone else, here at the site, that really enjoys NCIS, but can't stand THE UNIT.  I would rather sit through a 3-hour Pledge Drive featuring the musical stylings of Zamfir, than watch a single moment of THE UNIT.  Yuck!

"Grease" Finalists to Appear in NYC Reading of College: The Musical[/i] (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/107588.html).

The article says:  "Juliana Ashley Hansen and Adam Shorsten — finalists on NBC's "Grease: You're the One that I Want" — will be among the cast of an upcoming reading of College: The Musical.

And then:

Billed as "a tuneful and honest look at modern campus life," College: The Musical follows "the story of Nathan, a naive but enthusiastic freshman, as he discovers a world of parties, pizza, pastel polo shirts, the occasional class, and of course, more parties."

I first started online back in 1993, there was no world wide web, but there was AOL and I joined. I remember when it went from just words to words an pictures too.

During the OJ trial I was a regular on the Court TV boards on AOL.  I was kicked off when I told everyone that COASTDA was Josh Marquis.  The idiot was telling everyone when he was on Court TV so it isn't like it was tough to figure out. He was an arrogant pr....osecutor and it was worth getting kicked off.   The next day I used a different credit card, changed my screen name and was right back on.

Well I didn't go to the lunch!   I thought about it and decided that it wasn't my idea, no one asked me if I wanted to pick up half the tab, even though I know it would have been expected, I've done my own work for 2 years and they have been royal pains in the butt for about that long.  I had a motion and brief to write and file, so I just told them that I didn't have time and they could go on without me. When the biggest pain in the office said "Well you can work later and go too" I said "NO, I TOLD YOU I'M NOT GOING"

Then I found out that the other lawyer doesn't have to take any of my nasty cases - the ones he dumped on me.  Two lawyers are going to drive all the way from Des Moines to cover them. That's a 3 1/2 hour drive each way everytime there is a court hearing. The other lawyer doesn't even have very many cases! I said something to one of the secretaries and she said "Well you're a strong woman and around here the one who cries the most gets his way"   The sad thing is she's right. I am so glad I'm leaving. But I'd rather be considered the strong woman who doesn't play well with others than a 50 something male cry baby .

I was talking about your first post.  The second one is sad.

Yeah, I guess it's sad, but now that I really see what's going on, it's really more pathetic than anything.  Every day something happens that tells me I am absolutely doing the right thing by leaving.

Today it made me so happy I walked to court and back carrying my umbrella in the rain while singing "Singing in the Rain"  I added a couple dance steps and twirlled the umbrella a few times.  Then I went to the grocery store and they had dixieland music playing. I danced all the way through the grocery store. LOL, if people just danced through the day they would feel so much better...

I began my evening of viewing with last night's CSI: MIAMI. It was only a fair episode - one case involving an acrimonious couple that has three deaths tied to them and their divorce. The only really interesting aspect of the show was the primary guest star - Patrick Cassidy who still looked terrific and played his part very well.

IDOL had a good night for four of the six, a n okay night for one, and a below average one for the other.

I thought LaKisha did a lackluster job with "I Believe" with the usual problems with her breathing and some flat notes. The low sections were really too low for her.

Blake had a voice crack right as he was gearing up for the second third of his song, but otherwise it went well. I think his tone has been gorgeous the last two weeks.

The other four all had strong nights. I wasn't as carried away with Jordin's "You'll Never Walk Alone" as Randy was (thought she strained to hit the top notes in her chest voice, and when she once went to her head voice for a note, it was VERY weak). But Phil, Chris, and, naturally, Melinda did as well as it's possible for them to do with their songs.

Bottom three: LaKisha, Blake, and Chris with LaKisha going home.

Yes, Miss Patti forgot her camera after promising to take photographs.  Thankfully Mr. Barnum had his and there are some photographs that will be posted.

It was a sarklingly sparkling evening - much amusement, and we laughed and laughed until we could laugh no more, and then we laughed again.

BrettySpaghetti was a no-show.  It was one of the most fun get-togethers we've had - everyone was in top form and we were quite giddy with our plate fulls of Pounded Steak and Country Gravy (three of us had it), and cold shrimp and cocktail sauce to start.  Cason and Miss Karen shared a plethora of vegetable and potato side dishes, and MBarnum had lamb kidney something or other.  Several had bread pudding for dessert.

All caught up.

Well, tonight's East Coast gathering was basically just another dinner with some friends: myself, DR elmore and DR FJL.  We did dine at the Dressing Room.  DR elmore and I started off with the Spring Pea Soup, and DR FJL had the "maccherone and cheese with fatback".  For the entrees, I had the fried calamari with fried green tomatoes, DR elmore had the meatloaf, and DR FJL attempted to finish the Paul Newman Burger and fries.

And for dessert...  I had the Apple Pie with Maple Ice Cream, and DR FJL had the "Naughty Angel" - pan-fried angel food cook, vanilla ice cream and honey.  DR elmore had coffee.

And that's the dinner report from tonight's mini-East Coast gathering.

OH!  And there was a bit of excitement during our evening...  The taxi that was supposed to be waiting for us after the show was not waiting for us.  So the company manager called the cab company again and they told her one was on the way.  Well, he pulled up at 10:35... And we made it to the train station at 10:43.  The train, thankfully, was running on schedule - not early - and pulled in at 10:45.  Whew!

DR Jane - I've done the trip before from DC to Pittsburgh.  Five hours tops.  With stops.  The tricky part is the traffic on I-270/70 in Maryland.  It either runs smoothly, or it's basically a parking lot during rush hour.

Great seeing Jose and Larry as always, and the anticipation of maybe possibly perhaps meeting singdaw added to the excitement of the dinner.  Alas, no singdaw, as partially expected, hence the cab race to the train described by Jose.

The best dish was served at the restaurant attached to the westport Playhouse, such that the old joke may be trotted out and adapted:

And reading this article in today's NY Times brought a smile to my face...

Remedies: Dark Chocolate Similar to Blood Pressure Drugs (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/24/health/24reme.html?_r=1&oref=slogin)

Quote
April 24, 2007
Vital Signs
Remedies: Dark Chocolate Similar to Blood Pressure Drugs

By NICHOLAS BAKALAR
Eating dark chocolate may be almost as effective at lowering blood pressure as taking the most common antihypertensive drugs, a review of studies has found. Tea, on the other hand, appears to be ineffective.

The article says a diet rich in fruits and vegetables is healthy partly because plants contain chemical substances called polyphenols that help control blood pressure. In Western countries, the major sources of dietary polyphenols are tea and chocolate, but studies of their ties to blood pressure have had mixed results.

From more than 3,000 papers, researchers picked the largest randomized and controlled prospective studies and used statistical techniques to combine the data. The analysis included four studies of black tea, one of green tea and five of dark chocolate. It appears in the April 9 issue of The Archives of Internal Medicine.

Four of the five studies on chocolate found reduced blood pressure after eating, but none of the tea studies showed significant benefit. The magnitude of the effect of eating three and a half ounces of dark chocolate a day was clinically significant, comparable to that of beta-blockers like atenolol, known by the brand name Tenormin, or propranolol, known as Inderal. The authors acknowledge that the studies were short and that results may not apply to habitual use.

Milk proteins prevent the absorption of polyphenols, so milk chocolate is not effective. “I’ve been eating a little more dark chocolate,” said Dr. Dirk Taubert, the lead author and a professor of pharmacology at University Hospital in Cologne, Germany. “And my blood pressure has gone down. But I have no dietary recommendations for others.”

Oh...

I have to say my favorite "Tyler's Ultimate" recipe is his Roast Chicken.  It's basically fullproof.  It does get a bit smoky since you cover the chicken breast with bacon, and then roast it at high heat, but the finished result is well worth the trouble of resetting your smoke detector.

Of course, DR singdaw is always more than welcome to head into The City for dinner anytime with the Hainsies and Kimlets.

As to the show, I daresay I'll leave it to Larry to describe how the show works as an adaptation of the play The Skin of Our Teeth.  The second of the three parts feels long, even padded, but I think it's that when we're at the theater, we're just primed for an intermission these days for a 2:15 show.  But the first and third parts zipped along at a zippy clip.  And I loved the breaking of character, which I gather is from the play, but especially parts geared towards the actors' own selves, like mentioning Cady Huffman's and Shuler Hensley's Tonys in a comic moment.  makes you feel like you're seeing a script that in some ways is tailored to this specific group of actors you're seeing, even though most of it is likely set.

Oy! I am now all caught up as well.  DRs BrettySpaghetti and Singdaw were no-shows on both coasts.  Fie on both them, I say!

As to ALL ABOUT US: when it captures the spirit of the original play, it's quite wonderful.  Unfortunately, the other moments seem confused, muddled, or messy.  I liked Eartha's big Act Two number and the last number for Sabina, which captures the play's spirit beautifully.  Her first number in Act One does not.  I think the direction of Act Three was the best, Act Two the sloppiest.  Act One has a bizarre situation involving the family pets (in Wilder, a dinosaur and a mastodon, in this 2 mammoths): to save the human race, the pets are turned out of the house to face extinction in Wilder; in Joe Stein's libretto the two mammoths are sitting with Plato, Homer, Moses, and the rest of the Antrobus guests inside the house as the curtain falls!  Does Joe Stein think mammoths still roam the plains?

To bed.

DR Jane - I'm sure that you could switch off with Craig during the drive.  As long as you drive the speed limit, you should be OK.  And if he carries his boarding passes and passport with him, I'm sure if something were to happen and you got pulled over, that a trooper would more than likely take, "I just got back in the country, and I'm driving since my Mom does not like to drive at night, and I didn't realize I didn't have my license on me.." as a very acceptable excuse/reason.*  And I do have to say the when I-270/70 goes through the mountains, it's not the easiest of drive - especially at night.  Lots of hills, lots of curves.

*Please remember that DR Jose is not qualified in any sort of sense to dispense legal advice - good or otherwise.  ;D

DR BrettySpaghetti - I'm a big fan of Weird Romance. I remember when the OCR was released, buying a couple of extra copies for friends hoping they would like it too.  And they did.

When I did Sunday in the Park with George at Arena Stage in 1997, Sal Viviano was our Georges/George.  One day while we were running over some music in the pit, I asked if he would sing me his songs from Weird Romance if I played them for him.  And he did.  One of my fondest memories from that time.

TOD:

IIRC, the first thing I looked up on the internet was THE B MONSTER website as a friend who already had internet before I did, had mentioned it several times. I have still never gone to a newsgroup as I can't even figure out where in the heck to find such a creature...I really have no idea! I did quickly locate the Sinister Cinema forum and posted there for quite some time, as did JRand56, many moons ago.

Hmmm...I do believe I located a few,as DR Jose would say, "alternative" websites and forums  8)

I cannot even recall how I discovered Ebay...but like BK, I was hooked immediately.

Any fans here of a show / OCR called Weird Romance? Circa 1992, music by Menken.

You betcha!

One of Woody's favorites, and a sore point in the houshold: when I was on the B of D of International City Theatre in Long Beach CA, I loaned both a his CD and copy of the script to the theatre director to preview - in spite of numerous requests, over a three year period, , she never returned same!  I think U have fianllt replaced both items.

PS She also kept Woody's copy of New Brain!

I would be interested to know if there is anyone else, here at the site, that really enjoys NCIS, but can't stand THE UNIT.  I would rather sit through a 3-hour Pledge Drive featuring the musical stylings of Zamfir, than watch a single moment of THE UNIT.  Yuck!

Sorry, but I really enjoy them both! (The on-base machinations of the UNIT resonate with anyone with a career military background.)

I thought Kelly Carlson made a bitchin' Bitch.

The Hollywood HHW gathering was a blast! It was so very nice to see the lovely and demure DR Karen once again as well as the handsome and talented DR Cason, the cute and adorably pretty DR Adriana Patti, and that wonderful Organ playing maestro DR Musicman. BK was looking fresh and young and blonde and as always he wowed the table with his outrageous and humorous patter.

It really was a fun time...and that was Lamb Kidney saute I was eating, BK. I think Cason was the only one brave enough to give it a taste test.

Here are DRs Karen, Musicguy, and Cason. Just look at all of those wonderful smiles!

The Carl Rosa (http://www.carlrosaopera.co.uk/index.asp) touring production of The Pirates of Penzance (http://www.washingtoncenter.org/season/season_detail.asp?event_id=717) that I saw tonight with my family was excellent!  There was no electronic amplification!  They were singing and controlling the volume all by themselves!  We were way down at audience left in the front row and my parents LOVED the seats!  My mom especially loved that no one was in front of her (she's barely five feet tall).  And being that close, you really could see the actors' faces and see them act.  For the most part, they were all very good.

All of the singing was wonderful.  Frederick (Kevin Kyle) was very attractive, but really only had two or three different expressions throughout the whole show. :-\ Otherwise, he sounded beautiful but just looked pretty.  The Mabel (Charlotte Page) was a wonderful singer (and one of the most powerful in the whole cast...she could get LOUD!), but she was obviously a little older than the character is supposed to be. ::)

The coolest thing was that Ruth was played by Rosemary Ashe, the original Carlotta in The Phantom of the Opera and she was also in The Witches of Eastwick!  AND the Major-General was played by Barry Clark, "...an original cast member of The Phantom of the Opera at Her Majesty's, London, playing the tenor role of Piangi."  Two original Phantom cast members in the same touring company.
