I realize the topic of the day is arcane, but just look up the cast on the imdb and the characters they play - or refer to the original Lost Horizon.

Title: Re:NEW MOWN HAY
Post by: elmore3003 on April 26, 2007, 04:36:24 AM
Good morning, all!  Yesterday was a completely frustrating day: every plan and intention I had to be accomplished between 10 AM and 6 PM went to hell, and I wasted my day because of others' irresponsibilities.
After eight hours of raging, I was in no mood to be social last evening, so I caught up on the posts and went to bed early.  The biggest problem was a Fed Ex shipment from San Francisco, which was to be delivered by 3 PM.  The Fed Ex tracking on their site told me all morning that the packages were en route from Memphis.  I got to the office around 10:30 AM and waited.  Everytime I checked by telephone on the situation, I was told that the packages were en route to their destination.  I had to leave at 3 to be to a doctor's appointment at 4, and the packages were guaranteed by 3 supposedly.  At 2:45, I spoke to a Fed Ex customer service person who told me there had been a delay and the packages weren't yet on the delivery truck.  After telling Fed Ex where to jam the packages, I left.  Their tracking site tells me the packages were dumped at the office at 4:39, almost two hours after I left.

Now, the shipment was most likely delayed by air problems, so I wasted my day, but if the person who requested the shipment had asked the Gershwin Trust to ship them by second day as I requested they do, I wouldn't have wasted my day.

So then, I got to my appointment, signed in around 3:45, and waited to see my HMO's eye specialist.  At 5:30, I finally saw his assistant and was asked to wait.  There were four people waiting ahead of me, one of whom had been waiting snce 3:30, so I left.  I rescheduled my appointment for next month and asked for his very first appointment of the day.  I cannot believe the stupdity of an HMO booking appintments approximately every 10 minutes for a doctor who's clearly taking over 30 minutes to examine a patient!  Fuck it.

Perhaps if I hadn't wasted my  day on Fed Ex, or I'd had more reading material than the magazine I read twice while I waited, I woulddn't have minded the wait.  I'm too old, too testy, and too tired of catering to idiots.

Today, I have to go to Toyland, ascertain the cartons are indeed there.  Then NYPL, and then my goddaughter's dance recital, which means a trip to the Bronx.

I'll think about LOST HORIZON, which never thrilled me as book or either film.  Right now I think its salvation would be a cast of classic clowns: Red Skelton or Jimmy Durante as the High Lama, Ethel Merman, Milton Berle, Buddy Hackett, and Phil Silvers, with Barbra Streisan in the Margo role, and George Segal in the Ronald Colman part.

TOD:

I like the original movie version of LOST HORIZON, and the remake up until the first horrible song....

For a remake today:

Whew, I started a list and can't finish it.....I shall wait for some other suggestions.

Although I might like to see Ben Affleck and Diane Lane as Robert and Catherine/Sondra...but probably I would not like to hear them as same.

DR MBARNUM - what a great story!!!

What did Ms Todd have to say about Allison?  Did you mention that her screaming in FRANKENSTEIN'S DAUGHTER was actually Allison from Attack of the 50 Foot Woman?  I talked to her brother many years ago online, and he told me some stories that I think I have already mentioned to you.

Sammy Ogg also co starred with Miss Annette in ADVENTURES IN DAIRYLAND a Mickey Mouse Club serial....which introduced Moochie.

TOD:

Since I am totally unfamiliar with the LOST HORIZON musical, I don't have any good ideas on a remake.  However, I do have a bad one...

Director:  David Russell

Richard Conway:  George Clooney
Sally Hughes:  Lily Tomlin

It may still turn out to be a bad film musical, but it will be a picture that everyone will be talking about.

DR JoseSPiano, my mother thoroughly enjoyed All About Us last evening; thanks once again.  Fantastic seats!  She was glad to have had a chance to "read up" on all the background information ahead of time.  And whoever put that information together did a nice job of providing context.

I had a good time, as well.  I felt the audience last night was decidedly reticent.  Oh yes, they were reticent.  There were many times where I was the only one laughing.  Well, maybe that's my personal problem.  But still, I felt they could have been much more responsive.

I can't put my finger on exactly what it is, but the show - while it has many enjoyable elements - just doesn't "flow" for me as a whole.  There is still much that is worthwhile to see and hear.  The "keyboard II" part, for example.   :)   Yvette has grown stronger, I think.  And it was great fun seeing the bits of staging that have evolved since the final run-through.  Also, the actors have devised all kinds of subtle and not-so-subtle bits of business since that run-through, with some performances under their belts.  That was great fun to notice.

I was surprised about the [lack of] a Talkback, but it would have made a very late evening very much later, indeed.

Glad to hear that David Thompson and Stro were there, but I wouldn't recognize them if they had walked up and slapped me.  Which I would have deserved.

Oh, and DR MBarnum, since we finished dinner early, my mother and I had a great deal of time before the show.  We inspected all of the display posters at the Playhouse, and are fairly certain that the one bearing Frances Farmer's name is not amoung the group currently being displayed.

A woman came home, screeching her car into the driveway, and ran into the house. She slammed the door and shouted at the top of her lungs, "Honey, pack your bags. I won the lottery!" I saw the musical LOST HORIZON at the theater when it was first released and bought the soundtrack LP. I have seen the movie once and listened to the album once, so I can't offer any suggestions to who could have played the roles then or now.

I just know I thought it was one of the most leaden, overlong, and uninteresting musicals I had seen.

And I remember after AIRPORT came out and was such a big hit, producer Ross Hunter was on the Mike Douglas Show, and Mike asked him what his next project was going to be. When Hunter announced he was going to do a musical version of LOST HORIZON, there were audible gasps and whoops and much applause over the announcement. Clearly, they though this was a good idea. What we ended up with wasn't good.

As it is, I'm still a bit stiff from the cart wrangling of two days ago, but I'll have recovered enough to tackle the job again tomorrow.  And the bit of sunburn that I got has tamed down.

I still need to get to the store today.  We're almost out of soda, and there are a couple of sales I want to take advantage of - whole boneless pork loins at less than half price (time to pick up two), and those spiral-shaped energy saver light bulbs on a ten-for-ten sale (which really means just one dollar each) (but I'll have to get a rain check on this bargain, because we sold out by last Saturday and still haven't received a new shipment).

Other than that, it's a very nice day, and I intend to be nicely lazy for most of it.

Aren't those kinds of days just awful. I know we've all had them where nothing seems to go our way. I don't blame DR Elmore for just going to bed early and forgetting the day ever happened.

One day Ollie came home to find his wife Lena sitting stark naked on their bed.

"Holy cow, Lena," Ollie exclaimed.  "What are you doing sitting around like that in the middle of the day?"

And Lena started crying.  "I don't have anything nice to wear", she sobbed.

"What do you mean you don't have anything nice to wear?" asked Ollie as he opened their bedroom closet.  "Why, look in here!  Here's your pretty blue dress, here's your nice Sunday church dress, here's your nice every day dress, here's our neighbor Frank, here's your pretty green dress..."

Thanks for all the birthday wishes.

I have a cake story for DR Laura.

The restaurant where i usually go for my birthday provides a free cake.   The one i am going to tonight not only does not provide a free cake. But they charge $1.50/person to cut the cake (we are 8 people).

My aunt told them she would cut the cake herself (but this is not allowed).

They don't sell cakes (although they do sell very expensive single slices).

Now i don't really care (they do bring out a piece of cake for free). But my aunt was quite annoyed.

Is this a common thing? I get that it could be a pain for them to store the cake. But we always bring cakes to restaurants (for birthdays). and this is the first time we've come across such a policy!

So no cake description for DR Laura (although i can do a piece of cake description). :)

I have not read any reports about last night's IDOL. But i did not like it very much.

The format bothered me.  WE have these hugely upsetting stories, mixed with singers, and worthless idol's being declared safe.  That was so mean what they did to jordin. The girl was in tears!

I also really disliked the idea of them not eliminating anyone. My gosh if anyone sat through the whole two hours, that was not fair.  Plus what if the person with the least votes this week is not one of the bottom 2 next week. I find the whole thing unfair.

Well...it means no one is looking for survivors.  Whether the strange lady is telling the truth or not remains to be seen.  I've often wondered if this island was a "purgatory" for crewmembers who "died" when the plane crashed.

On the other hand, we know the flight cannot have been "found" since we, ourselves, have seen the nose and tail sections during the course of the first and second seasons.

Very cool pic of DR Jose, Eartha Kitt and Paul Newman!

When I was a kid, folks used to say my dad looked quite a lot like Paul Newman.  I never saw it.

Looking at this picture, however, it's eerie how much, in his last years, my dad resembled how Paul looks now.

I quite agree with you.  Each elimination is based on how you performed the night before.  Some contestants LITERALLY stay or go based on a performance.

Someone should have gone last night.   Period.  Two leaving next week doesn't cut it at all.  Averaging out votes over two weeks isn't the answer.

I hope all the self-congratulations are done with this "Idol Gives Back" event.

DR DearReaderLaura - Since you most likely have some "remnants" of paint sitting around, have you ever considered a some kind of faux-wall paint-treatment treatment?  I think you would enjoy some sponge painting.  And maybe the twins could come over and help you with that too.  You just dab here... then there... then there... And so on and so on and so on...

That is what I painted over in the kitchen. I cannot do crafty things at all. It looked like a five-year-old did a Vacation Bible School project.

Yes, spoiler warnings ARE appreciated...

About what Parachute Lady has said about Oceanic Flight 815--it also means that someone went to an awful lot--an awful lot--of trouble to cover up what really happened.  And that means that they'll go to just as much trouble to make sure there is no rescue from the outside.  Which means that once Mr. Eyepatch informs the Others about Parachute Lady and her satellite phone, our survivors will have a lot more to worry about than just having a deceitful Juliet in their midsts.

My aunt in washington had themed bathrooms. One is an underwater theme with fish and seaweed and things, the other is a dark jungle with lions and tigers and ...there are no bears in the jungle >.<

I was thinking flamingos. Maybe an arrangement of pink feathers on the wall, perhaps. Something like they would do on one of those trading places shows I've seen when I've had a motel room with cable.

The bad news is Austrian Airlines now tell Craig they don’t have room for Yogi and it will cost more to fly on Lufthansa,   While Austrian jerked him around saying the flights for Yogi were confirmed, they would not send him a written confirmation.  Lufthansa was very nice and confirmed Yogi while Craig waited on the phone.

The good news is Craig’s flight is scheduled to arrive earlier, at 12:45.  If all goes well we should be able to make the drive to Pittsburgh in one day.

I did have a very nice dinner with my friend from Tucson yesterday. The food at Junior's is good. It's moderately priced and the portions are large. Too large for me but not for the rest of America it seems. My friend saw Chorus Line and liked it very much. He had seen the original 14 times and loves it but he thought this production was very worthwhile.

He saw Spring Awakening last night but I haven't heard yet how he liked (or disliked) the show.

He has one this evening, one tomorrow (Friday), two on Saturday, two on Sunday, one on Monday, one on Tuesday, two on Wednesday and he leaves on Thursday. 12 shows in seven full days in the city!

DR FJL - I finally talked to my friend who had also seen Legally Blonde during it's first week of previews, and then again this past weekend.  He said he still likes the show, but he seemed to notice a bit of "tightening" up of the pace.  Alas, he felt "they" weren't leaving time for the jokes to build up properly, and for the laughs to settle.

But what bugged him the most was that most of the women sounded alike, both aurally and stylistically.  And he also had quite a bit of difficulty with the diction the second time round.

Which is why I indulge occasionally.  It's all about moderation.  *But the cookies do weigh in at a nice and hefty 6 ounces each.

But, heck, $3.50 is cheaper than almost all of those coffee creations at Starbucks.  And I don't do Starbucks regularly like a lot of people in this city - and elsewhere - seem to do.

And, heck, "it" could also be cigarettes.  How much a pack are those running nowadays?

I love what my aunt and uncle got me.  It's a purse. Well i don't know exactly what you call those money packs that go around your waist. But this one is Guess (i love that brand).  It's sort of a taupe color.  And it is so beautiful!  It was way too expensive (i'm more of a sale kind of person). But i really wanted to get one of those for the summer, and they really wanted me to have the one i wanted.

But they also have steak, roast beef... and it is fancier (the bathrooms have glass doors with fancy sinks) and has really great service.

Except for the cake development. :)

I found this interesting statement over at zabasearch.com (http://www.zabasearch.com/ai_stats.php):

"Phil, LaKisha and Chris are bottom three, Period!

"This is the accurate outcome of votes cast. American Idol's network and call capture systems not capable of accurately counting votes in this volume. Accurate voting results can only be achieved by vote samplings. Phil, LaKisha and Chris received the fewest votes this week, Period.

"No one is going home because American Idol does not know the accurate vote count. Domestic phone network trunks not able to handle the volume of calls accurately. Traffic congestion shuts down and overruns switches resulting in wildly inaccurate voting counts.

"Sooner or later, this truth will surface in the media. This is not American Idol's fault or their intention. Local exchange carrier phone networks simply not able to handle the volume of calls accurately. The show has become more popular than U.S. phone systems can handle.

"*Sanjaya did not get the fewest votes last week. He may have gotten the least votes counted, but not the least votes cast."

Jose - Re Legally Blonde - I'm wondering whether, as the audience gets to be more and more pre-teen and teenage girls and their moms, the laughs that were so strong during the first week of previews were not getting the expected reactions by the third and fourth weeks, so the actors and directors have compensated by rushing the set-ups a little.  I didn't notice the rushing, but I did notice that great lines were not getting laughs, though, while they did during the first preview week.

In any event, I'm glad I saw Legally Blonde twice before the family audience discovered it.  Some of the humor is just not necessarily family-friendly.  I was sure that the lawyer/MBA/investment banker crowd would catch on to it, since it's so up and positive about being in professions where you can potentially make a difference, and the charcatres are 22-25, not teens - that may yet happen, but it seems the pre-teen and teen girls have gottne there first.  But I wish them well with the reviews no matter what.

The thing that bothers me most about not eliminating someone last night or letting us see who was in danger was that often, people get complacent if they think their favorite is safe and either don't vote or vote for someone else who seems to be unsafe. Once it becomes known that the person is in danger often gets those fans to really pump up their voting. How many times have we seen someone in the bottom group jump back up to the top once their fans were made aware they weren't immune to being eliminated.

Remember that Fantasia was next to the bottom the week that Jennifer Hudson was eliminated three years ago. After that, Fantasia was never in the bottom again.

What if Melinda's fans have no idea that she's really in danger of being eliminated. They might be voting for others or simply not voting for Melinda.

Making the bottom three known is the LEAST they could have done.

Lunch ran long again today, so I didn't get as much viewing accomplished that I was expecting to.

I did begin with MEDIUM, and it was a good episode. I pretty much figured it out before the resolution, but that was a great moment in the apartment when Allison was taking to the "ghost."

And Ariel's anger about the summer camp seemed very real to me. Funny, though. As a kid, I had a savings account and a small stock portfolio given to me by my uncle, but I knew that was money not to be touched, and it wasn't until I needed a down payment when I bought my home.

Just finished reading a delightful book, Jacqueline Winspear's

Maisie Dobbs (http://www.jacquelinewinspear.com/index.htm)

It's the first in a series of 4 mysteries set in England between the World Wars.  The title character was a nurse in WW I and becomes a detective.

From Kander and Ebb's "City Lights" from THE ACT:

There's the rooster, where's my cleaver?
So laid back, my mind might crack,

DR DearReaderLaura - Since you most likely have some "remnants" of paint sitting around, have you ever considered a some kind of faux-wall paint-treatment treatment?  I think you would enjoy some sponge painting.  And maybe the twins could come over and help you with that too.  You just dab here... then there... then there... And so on and so on and so on...

Or if you take a rag...

Etc., etc., etc.  (ah, a King & I reference)

It is kinda fun to do that. A friend of mine who has young kids, let them put the hands in paint and make handprints on the walls near the light switch and and few other spots in the bathroom. It turned out rather cute.

Here are the beginnings of my Lost Horizon remake choices - and I'm doing this as if I were producing what I hoped would be a first-class and excellent and interesting film musical.

Director: Francois Ozon
Writer: Patrick Marbar
Choreographer: Tommy Tune

In the Peter Finch role: Hugh Jackman
In the Bobby Van role: Noah Racey
In the Liv Ullman role: Naomi Watts
In the Olivia Hussey role: Ludivine Seigner
In the Sally Kellerman role: Jane Krakowski
In the George Kennedy role: Will Smith
Chang: Anthony Wong
The High Lama: Peter O'Toole

I agree with bk on the sally kellerman role with the casting of Jane Krakowski

In the GEorge Kennedy role, I can see Will Smith or Matt ashford

I am back from a wonderful lunch with Joe Morrison. Wow, at age 74 he looks better then I do at 43. I need to get to the gym.

WE ate at a nice place on W. Pico Blvd (1 block south of Overland) called LOUISE'S...good food. I had the tilapia special and Joe had a salad (he eats very healthy).

I left quite early to get over there and it was a good thing because I got very lost and ended up driving around Beverly Hills for about an hour...of course being lost in Beverly Hills is not so bad...such a pretty place! I had thought for some reason that Santa Monica Blvd intersected at an angle with Sunset Blvd....evidently I was wrong and that was my first mistake.

Eventually I stopped at a Firehouse in Beverly Hills...walked through the place saw the engines, went through the area where the firemen work out and even into an empty office...but the placed seemed deserted! I think those firemen were hiding from me! Evidently DR Elmore's all points bulletin must have gone out.

So instead I got help from a Verizon workman who was in front of the Fire Station and he directed me to Santa Monica Blvd (I was at Sunset and Beverly Glen, I think).

After a few more wrong turns after asking a few more directions at Walgreens and a couple of postmen/women (all of whom gave me the wrong directions!) I managed to find Pico...and the restaurant...got there exactly on time!

It was a fun adventure!

Today was chimney sweep day. He remembered me climbing up on the roof with him. (Maybe it was the chorus of chim chimney I sang while we were up there, lol)   Anyway, the chimneys are clean enough but the cement on the top is cracking and water is getting in. So, he's coming back tomorrow and will patch the cement and give me chimney caps to stop the weather and critters from getting in.  So - I am now cleared to use the fireplaces.  Of course I have no desire to use them right now, but I am cleared to do it.

Here is the quote from DR Cason about his appearance in "The Office."

"The best places to watch for me are in the background when Jim and Andy first pull up to the school they are going to (I am in a black hoodie and walk behind them as they are getting out of the car); another prime spot (if they didn't edit it out) will be in a hallway when Andy recognizes his "girlfriend" -- they did several takes where there is a 30-something teacher who Jim mistakenly thinks Andy is talking about at first and I am right behind her - who I believe they pan in on...

Other assorted places are in a hallway scene when the bell rings and everyone scatters, I run into a classroom right behind Jim - then there are the obligatory courtyard scenes where everyone is wandering around.  When Jim and Andy exit out of the school (again, if they kept that shot), myself and another guy run out of the building right before the two of them exit.  Just keep your eyes peeled for a brown haired guy in a black hoodie, a green sweater, and jeans...  "

Panorama City is totally seedy now.  Parts of Van Nuys are equally seedy, and other parts of Van Nuys are very nice - they tend to call those parts Valley Glen now.

I checked out the tables in the convention hall place...Laurie's table is kitty corner from Erik Estrada's and nowhere near Mickey Rooney's (thank goodness). I think Tai Babalonia is nearby and so amazonian wrestler girl has the table next to us.

The place was empty aside from 1970 porn actress Seka who had already set up her table and was entertaining several middle aged vendors. Of course the actual show isn't until tomorrow...but looks like she wanted to get a head start on meeting her fans!

And for some reason they are putting Butch Patrick right next to her rather then next to his co-star from The Munsters.

Oh, and it's also been a while since we've done a "Roll Call".

My name is Sandra (or Cassandra, Exandra, Cazanda, or Cassanwa, if you prefer) and I'm a Cherry Coke-aholic. I ate cookies for breakfast this morning (Oreo peanut butter Double Stuf) and cooked broccoli for lunch (blergh!) and immediately got on a bus headed toward a convenience mart that sells Cherry Coke in order to get the taste out of my mouth. I would have had a plate for lunch too, if Brandon had eaten his broccoli.

I am listening to Lawrence Welk and the Champagne Music Makers on my iPod Artaxerxes.

Hmmmm......Style Book of SPJ says capitalize Black when you are using it interchangeably with the term African-American to denote a specific race.  If you capitalize Hispanic then in the same context you capitalize Black.

Learn something everyday.  In that sentence then, yes, Blacks would be capitalized.

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel opinion:

"Q. Why does the Journal Sentinel capitalize Hispanics, Asians, Latinos and Jews, but not blacks?

A. Our practice is to capitalize ethnicities and nationalities, not racial designations based on a skin color, such as black, white, brown, yellow or red. Some ethnicities generally denote race, such as African-American or Asian, and yet, there are Africans who are not black and there are Asians who are Caucasian, even if their skin is brown. Someone who is Hispanic can be of any race.

The only races generally described in terms of color are black and white, and to capitalize either or both would be jarring to readers because neither word is a proper noun.

Most newspapers now consider African-American and black to be interchangeable, except, of course, when it wouldn't be accurate. If a source prefers to be called one or the other, we honor the source's preference. Our style is to generally use American Indian, but if a source prefers Native American, we will use that. "

In your sentence it is used as a proper noun.   I guess.

I finished the movie just it time for UGLY BETTY. The ignoramuses at the local ABC affiliate didn't flip the HD switch until about 8 minutes into the broadcast, and I was livid until someone woke up.

The show was wonderful as Betty made her peace with the folks she thought had let her down. Real shock with the Alexis storyline (though I should have known better). Funny, the actor playing her lover played the recurring role of the gay boy friend on THE CLASS earlier this season.

And I still adore Justin. He only has to walk through a scene or make a quip or two and he steals the show. I thought he was hilarious sitting under that hair dryer.

But who would we have cast in Lost Horizon back when it was made?  And who SHOULD have directed it?

Here's some choices:

Director: Robert Wise

Choreographer: Michael Bennett or Ron Field

Writer: Ernest Lehman

Score: Burt Bacharach with some new lyrics by Mr. David

Cast:

In the Peter Finch role: Richard Burton
In the Liv Ullman role: Julie Andrews
In the Bobby Van role: Tommy Rall, Bob Fosse, or Bobby Van
In the Sally Kellerman role: Jill Clayburgh or Michelle Lee or Diane Keaton
In the George Kennedy role: George Kennedy
In the Olivia Hussey role:  ?
Chang: John Gielgud
High Lama: Charles Boyer or Sam Jaffe

If Sam Jaffe played the role he wouldn't have needed make-up.

I may have to leave at any second but I wanted to thank everyone for their vibes and kind thoughts.

I'm scared folks.  This could be it.  They are going to admit Mom into the intensive care unit.  We've been here since 6 and it is now 1:46 AM.

She will have to have surgery because her heart is somehow leaking blood into her stomach.  They also think she has major lung problems.

I've been up since 5:30 AM yesterday morning so I am starting to get pretty tired but I won't leave until I see them put her into a room.

- Hispanic refers to a specific national origin.

It should, but it doesn't.

: of, relating to, or being a person of Latin American descent living in the U·S. ; especially : one of Cuban, Mexican, or Puerto Rican origin

Also, when "Black" is being using as a cultural identifier (in place of Negro, Afro-American, Colored, etc.) it is normally capialized.

Me, I am night-watching The Hotel, because they pay me for that! ;)

Great cast:

CSI had a despicable episode that took a sneering tongue-in-cheek look at a pathetic ex-boxer's death. I really hated this episode's lighthearted tone over all the attempts on the man's life. A really vile episode.

I think the juxtaposition of the light hearted tone with the very graphic replays caused the problem.  Only Monty Python can pull off great guffaws and gushing blood.

I had thought for some reason that Santa Monica Blvd intersected at an angle with Sunset Blvd....evidently I was wrong and that was my first mistake.

Actually, they do intersect at an angle, in the Silver Lake area (the side of LA closer to New Jersey).
