Well, you've read the notes, the notes hurried along, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're learning how to do the Lambada (The Forbidden Dance).

Slapstick. I loved the Lewis/Martin films  -Scared Stiff" is my favourite.  I also loved the "Road" films.
"Whats' Up Doc" works for me and the slapstick moment in the Airplane movies as well.  Mel Brooks use of Slapstick is usually good too (even if most of the films don't quite "get there".

I watched a movie on TV last night titled THE LAST DAYS OF DISCO.  There were some very nice performances by young people whose names I have heard but hadn't really connected with faces....

Chloe Sevigney was the best of the lot....Matt Keeslar was also very good.  Kate Beckinsale was good as was MacKenzie Astin.

I then went to Amazon and bought the soundtrack because it has a lot of DISCO DANCE MUSIC!

Good morning, all!  I don't believe the ibuprofen prescription is doing a damned thing.  I need drugs, real drugs!

I've got a lot of writing today, and a noon trip to the NYPL.  I will most likely spend my evening prone with a heating pad.  Again.  I do hope this back snaps out of it soon because my social life next week is heating up: a play reading on Monday, Encores! on Wednesday, dinner with friends on Tuesday,  luncheon and dinner dates on Thursday, and that's enough.

TOD:
    The Marx Brothers' Duck Soup
Abbott & Costello Hold That Ghost
    Martin & Lewis Scared Stiff
    The Three Stooges

How wonderful!  You could have picked any of the legendary duos of the stage (Lunt & Fontaine, Tandy & Cronyn, Simon & Schuster); but instead you chose Tom and Antonia.

Good morning and a very Happy Birthday to our DR George!!!!

I know my posts have been short the past couple of times.  It is a lot harder then I thought it would be to try to go to work, home and here.  I'm just so tired.

Mom had a bit of a bad night.  She was in a lot of pain from her hip.  They had to give her 3 doses of whatever pain meds they give her  before she felt ok.  Now she is kinda loopie.  She's asking me all kinds of strange questions--are the dogs in--am I going to church on Sunday--etc.  I think the meds really have her out of it.

The doctor was in this morning.  She said she is stable but she is in no hurry to move her anyplace.  They have her on the waiting list for the more permanent home in Sun City.  I dread that because as far as this place is, Sun City is even further away.

I'm burning at least a quarter of a tank of gas every other day so as it is.  I know I couldn't afford to go everyday if she goes there.  Sigh.

I'm doing better.  I bought some ST Johns Wort to help with my moods and it is helping.  I tryed to get in touch with my doctor the other day but that was real joke.  By the time I got them to pick up the phone (at noon), they told me they didn't have any openings.

So far, the weather has been with us and it hasn't rained.  I know we need it but I don't want the dogs to be outside in a storm.  What I'm going to do about that when I'm at work, I don't know.  I may have to invest in a doggie door of some sort to let them into the house.

Tonight on HBO-HD is the paycable premiere of THE BREAK-UP with Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn. Once again, I didn't see this in theaters or on DVD, so this will be my first experience with it. It was a big hit for them, but from what I understand, it's not really the romantic comedy the trailers suggested it is, so I'm intrigued by what it might turn out to be.

I'm afraid that my TOD choices will sound awfully familiar and redundant......... however, they really are (to me) all really wonderful examples of good, well-done slapstick.  To say nothing of comedy that was actually funny, and didn't require gutter/ghetto cuss words .

Bringing Up Baby
The Delivery Boy
The Great Race
What's Up Doc?
various Mel Brooks scenes

What to do, what to do?...

I had sort of planned to take care of some stuff around the apartment today - a.k.a. cleaning and laundry - but since it's quite sunny outside right now, and the temps are supposed to reach the low 70s, I highly suspect that I will be heading to Central Park sometime this afternoon for a couple of hours...

Cleaning or Central Park...
Laundry or Central Park...

Hmm...

Alas, there is one mini-project that I need to take care of today, and I should take care of that before I head to the Park.

For tonight's dindin, I'm planning on making a Chiles Rellenos Casserole.  The recipe I've found sounds a lot like what my mother used to make on occasion.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

Open three 4-oz cans of whole chiles, slit open the chiles and remove the seeds, rinse the chiles and lay them flat on paper towels to dry out.

Either shred 1 lb. Cheddar cheese, or buy pre-shredded (about 4 cups).

In a medium bowl, whisk together 1 cup milk and 1/3 cup flour with 2 eggs that have been beaten with a fork.  Season with salt.

Layer half of the chiles in the bottom of a greased 1.5 quart baking dish.  Top with half of cheese, and pour on half of the batter.  Repeat with the remaining chiles, cheese and batter.

Place in the middle of the oven, bake for 30 minutes.  Spoon contents of 1 14.5-oz. can diced tomatoes evenly over the casserole, bake 30 more minutes or until set.

To be honest, I don't remember my mother's casserole having the tomatoes.  But it does sound good.

My media watch.

I put together a super edition of FOLLIES using various sources including a live recording of the OC, a cut from BK's Sondheim Album, Marry Me A Little, The London Cast, The NJ Cast and the Concert Cast and the Tribute Album.

Recording including the various version of the Overture, Loveland and the various endings including the songs cut from the show (Where they would be approximately) and the songs from the London version

43 cuts over 2 cds
(there is actually 44 but That is only 53 seconds and it is the exit music and why waste a disc for 53 seconds!)

Hmm...  I'd add some shredded chicken for some extra protein.  Although, I guess if you added some tortillas to the mix, it would basically become a tamale/enchilada casserole.

However, I do have to say, a good and true chile rellenos is very hard to find.  Strangely enough, some of the best chile rellenos I've ever had have been in Ft. Myers, FL, and Logan, UT, of all places.

Isn't Kate Beckinsale SO PRETTY?!

Back from THE POT-LUCK PLAYS and a post-show snack with Rodzinski and TPunk.  I'll discuss specifics about Rodzinski's play after the run is over because the surprises (gentle yet extremely effective dramatically and emotionally) are important to the impact of the piece, but I will say try to get there this weekend or next and enjoy the spectacular work of HHW's own Tom Nondorf, and the splended and so very real acting of Mr. Steve Maruzzelli and HHW's own Antonia Barba.  (Apparently, tomorrow's perfs are particularly good in terms of assuring the best seating choices.)

Skip was a little tired after a long walk with the dogs this morning, so we almost shifted our tix to the evening performance, but I'm glad we went in the afternoon because that afforded us the opportunity to spend some time with author/director and the female star of that playlet, called "Answering."  It was exciting to talk with them right after having seen the show.

We got a lovely bonus going this afternoon in that the de facto house manager at this performance was one of Skip's former students, who also had a fine fine playlet on the program, the Kleban Award-winning writer Cheryl Davis.   It was lovely getting to see her and chat with her as well.

Actually the original title is HAVE MERCY (or whatever the Egyptian for that would be)....but it is almost scene for scene the A and C film...amusing, but Ismail Yassin, though a popular comediain in Egypt back then, is not as funny as Lou Costello.

I just posted this on a film music board - I know this won't appeal to our show lovers, but I'm just posting it here "in case" there are any soundtrack folks among us or our lurkers:

Whilst rummaging around in one of my storage facilities (which are DEEP with boxes upon boxes of STUFF) I found what I believe will be the first of several boxes of Bay Cities CDs (the others are really buried deeply in the very back, behind and below many boxes - I can see them, but can't get to them yet.

For now, I have found one of the classic Bay Cities titles.  Let the guessing begin!  I'll start:

I guess Jerry Fielding 3, one of the limited edition Fielding CDs that go for decent prices whenever they come up on eBay.  Fielding 3 has three scores - two of which have had subsequent releases and one which hasn't - The Getaway, Bring Me The Head Of Alfredo Garcia, and Fielding's wonderful The Gambler (a little over twenty-two minutes of a sixty-something minute CD).

The CDs are sealed and individually numbered.  I know it's the only Fielding I had extras of, so there won't be any Fielding 1 or 2 found (or Chato's Land - the rarest of the four CDs).

So, I'm going to offer them at a good price - $15 plus $3.50 shipping (they originally sold for twenty, and that was back in 1992).  They regularly go for thirty to fifty dollars on eBay.

Act quickly if you want it.  You can e-mail me at kritzerland@aol.com for instructions.

DR JMK - Good to see you again!  Hope you get your Vista "problems" worked out soon.

-Of course, I have to ask, "Why?"  ::)

If you mean why did we get a computer with Vista--because we had no choice (well, I could have gotten a Mac, but I'm old-fashioned).  When our old computer #1 died, it did so very suddenly, with me in the middle of a huge charting job and Gabe one day away from his Science Fair with all of his data on the computer.  When I went out to buy a new computer, they had just that day (of course) pulled all PCs off the shelf because Vista was being released in 2 weeks and Microsoft wasn't letting them sell anything with XP anymore.  So we managed to cobble together a computer out of old components we had lying around, and a friend of Betsy's came over and helped me get the old hard drive from the dead one into this cobbled together one, so that I could finish charting and Gabe could finish Science Fairing.  :)  And then when I was able to get a new computer, all I could get was one with Vista.  It's actually been OK, slowly my old software is working as drivers are being released, but it's been a challenge.  One really weird thing is that some (not all) General MIDI files don't play correctly.  Still trying to figure that one out.

Aren't you glad you asked--NOT.  ;)

And, BTW, the Wii internet access worked with the old computer.  Yay!!

I just got home from a nice visit with my 19month old niece.  Well she came over for lunch and then i stayed with her while she took her nap (she sleeps from 1pm-3pm). Then we went out. And then i went over to have dinner with her and my sister.

She is so cute. She was spinning herself around in circles and my sister told her to stop (for some reason she liked spinning till she made herself too dizzy to stand).

Anyhow my sis put her in her playpen as a sort of timeout. And she had this alphabet toy in there with her.  You push the tummy and it says a letter at random. They you are supposed to repeat it.  And for the first time she was repeating each letter.  I have no idea if other 19 month olds know their letters. BUt the first letter was W. ANd it was so cute when we heard her say it!

DR JMK - Gotcha.

As for MIDI - Yeah, that's been a common bugaboo with Vista from what I hear.  It should be a very straight forward "fix", but for some weird reason it's not.  So much for binary code.

As for the Wii - Be sure to watch for signs of repetitive stress syndrome as well as carpal tunnel.  And be sure to get those grip accessories.  A friend of mine has already broken one window and a lamp in his apartment.  ;)

Hey BK, last weekend I was flipping around at about midnight and on one of our cable access channels a guy was being interviewed, and I nearly turned the channel before I realized it was Mr. Gerritt Graham. The focus was mainly on PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE, but the interviewer asked him what other roles he is recognized for, and he says, "I did a movie called SPACESHIP which people still come up to me about." It seemed like he was going to talk more about it, but the interviewer switched the topic a bit. But he did bring it up!

Ex teacher here.. "Whence" does need "From". Whence = from where.

Of course I am old and not that familiar with USA common practice.

I'll file that one in the ol' brain-o-meter.

Spent a good portion of this evening finishing all of the special features on the ARMY OF SHADOWS supplement disc, and there were a lot of bonuses. I really enjoyed seeing the restoration comparisons between the rotten videotape release, the scratchy and blown-out looking original master, and the final product.

Lots of the discussions (and arguments) about the French Resistance were also fascinating. Melville's cinematographer and film editor also had their own sections and spoke eloquently about the pleasure and terror of working with him.

I did watch THE BREAK UP on HBO-HD, however. Definitely not a romantic comedy as the film was filled with the bitterness, anger, and frustration that happens when many couples do decide to end things. I really found it hard to see Vince Vaughn's side of the argument; it seemed so clear that he was a selfish, uncaring jerk who didn't deserve to have anyone special in his life. What he needed was a nursemaid and "yes-woman" to do his bidding.

The latter was off TCM. Might be able to get to them tomorrow since, once again, my prime time line-up doesn't get started until 9 p.m.

In between shows, Ol' TPunk and I thought we'd catch a movie in Times Square. There was only ONE movie that fit the bill, timewise, so we went to see a film called NEXT, knowing nothing about it, which I find is the best way to see a movie anyway.

This movie has to be one of the dumbest movies ever devised. You have the embalmed looking Nicolas Cage as the guy who can see TWO MINUTES into the future. Juliane Moore delivering one of the most hackneyed performances I've ever seen by an actor of any note. Rotten CGI. Total nonsense script. To its credit, it was entertainingly bad.

And had it actually had an ending, we would have been late for the evening performance of our show, so we were lucky there.

I'll give Ms. Moore the benefit of the doubt and say she may be one of those actors who can do quirky pretty well, off-kilter or period stuff, thought-provoking stuff,  but cannot muster up the conviction to do a mindless Hollywood film.

I have been motivated to watch DVDs all day long...but I kept taking naps.

I am now watching my second Bollywood movie of the weekenend...HONEYMOON TRAVELS PVT. LTD (2007)...a cute little quirky comedy about 6 diverse newlywed couples on a hired bus package trip to Goa.

A bit different from the typical modern Bollywood film....which is not a bad thing.

Mine, too!

I don't think much of O'Neal in the Cary Grant role.  He and Streisand work well together, but she's much better than he is.  And the supporting cast is AMAZING.

Madelyn Kahn is priceless....and the scene with Mabel Albertson...and the guy tripping her in the lobby to prevent her from getting into the elevator with her plaid bag --  is hysterical.

GREAT auto chase through the streets of San Francisco, too.

I watched two Tyrone Power films from the sensational new Tyrone Power DVD box.

First up was "Son of Fury"...and what a wonderful adventure this movie is.  Pity that Fox didn't film it (and "Prince of Foxes") in the Technicolor process the film screams out for and richly deserves.  Alfred Newman's score -- most specifically the island scenes -- is gorgeous and memorable.

Next was "The Black Rose" -- the print they used as a master was very good, but not at all the vibrant Technicolor I imagine the film had in its initial release.  Still, it's a beautiful film, extremely well-made and well-acted and well-scored by Richard Addinsell.
